BREAKING NEWS: Diamond Bar hires new football coach

| | Comments (64) |

John Martin, who coached from 2002 to 2005 at Rowland, has been named Diamond Bar's head varsity football coach. Martin left Rowland after the 2005 season because he needed to work on his degree and could no longer coach/teach without it. He was an assistant for the Raiders this past season, coaching linebacker and tight ends. He replaces Nick Cuccia, who was fired soon after this past season.

QUICK ARAM THOUGHT: I like the hire. I think that Coach Martin did a good job at Rowland and he will probably get these kids to play hard for him. I still don't think DB is anywhere close to Damien or Chino Hills. And then there's always Chino and Glendora. The problem for DB is that they're probably No. 5 or 6 in the league in terms of talent and then when you factor in the savvy coaching i.e. Roche, Pasqy and Morrison, I'm just not sure DB can expect much. Things just aren't ever going to be the same with DRanch, Ayala and CH in the Brahmas' backyard. I could be wrong ... some people say there are football players on campus who don't come out for the sport. Hoopster Elijah York comes to mind for me. He's got at D-1 receiver's body. I think Martin will do a good job, I just hope the Brahma fans don't expect the world of him. He is stepping into a much better situation than the past few years.

Upon further review...you are correct and I was wrong about Ayala in Div6. Thanks for the correction.

Joe Amat said:

randy,

I'm with you on the hoops and pigskin at the "little yellow a". Not throwing stones - just catching them and sending 'em back. But we know where our problems start - at the top.

I was just refering to the DB excuse that FB is down is because the athletes are playing basketball. Our best athletes are playing basketball too - it's just Girl's Basketball !:?(

All I know is that the last SGV CIF title in boys hoops came from when we were still the Big Golden A. Plus back-to-back National Baseball championships, and we were still right there in FB.

It was just under different coaching regimes that makes it seem decades ago for us.

randy said:

Easy there Joe, DB basketball did ok in '04--i wanna say they made it to the semis or the 3rd round..., the 05-06 year was not so good, and this year has been pretty damn good.....unlike your hoops program....don't be throwing to many stones our way bro, boys hoops and football has not been your forte these past couple of years either...and don't even try to rag our school academically, we rate as well as Palos Verdes and Beverly Hills school districts.....

Patrick said:

Well if you want to know why many of them are playing basketball, its problably because both Jv and freshman teams went undefeated this yr, THATS WHY!

Joe Amat said:

if the athletes at DB are playing basketball...why have THEY not been better in recent years?

randy said:

I always thought Cuccia was approachable at DB. The AD/Head Basketball Coach Cameron is the same way. I'm sure Coach Martin will keep that open door policy, if someone has a legit concern.

kong said:

db football, yes there are athletes, but many are not playing football. they play basketball. The coaches need to get those kids out and then u might see some real improvement.

question, do your coaches communicate with the parents? replies welcome.

hey uh No-step.......Ayala, and the entire Sierra league were in Div 2 during the 90's, and are still in it after the re-org in 2006. The Inland Div is considered Div 2 by CIF unofficially. Did you know from 1994-2001 either DB, Ayala or Chino made it to the finals every year.....pretty impressive---no doubt.....then Diamond Ranch and Chino Hills get built (both schools who've NEVER reached the finals) and they scoop a large portion of the athletic pool, leading to the bottom eventually falling out for those 3 powerhouses. Ah, but what a ride that was......ya gotta take the good with bad sometimes, we'll see things picking up for the purple and gold here soon enough.......

Tartan Pride and FeelingU,

i agree with both of u. Kalusny will be a major factor in the league as a smart and talented qb who got some very early experience playing varsity this past season as a soph. hopefully he works hard in the off season. you are right about glendora defense being very tough this year. lots of experienced and talented starters returning. looking forward to seeing some squash ball out there.

hard to replace rb edmonds. we will have to wait and see who steps up to carry the ball. i 2 am looking forward to some great things this next season with the tartans. perhaps this will be the year.

Man I hope your right, I just hope Pasqy doesn't screw with young Klu's head and sit him his junior year like he did with Garrett Crook. I was glad to see Sierra League coaches give Garrett a first team All League Selection
This coming year will be interesting.

Tartan Pride said:

No doubt Glendora defense will be awesome this coming season with so many returning starters...probably one of the toughest in the Sierra League.

If young Kalusny can show his great skills at QB, offense will be good as well.

Glendora may see a league championship this year as other contenders, especially Damien, will have a off year as many key starters have graduated.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh......"5th down"--you remember that well don't you? Shit happens bro, in the heat of battle, the truth can get muddled. That wasn't the first time the refs blew a call like that. I wasn't there that night. But I remember the fallout for the Upland folks. Whaddya gonna do? You gotta move forward, you gotta let it go. It was a tough break. I HAVE NEVER SEEN OR EVEN HEARD of a coach correcting the refs when they screw up what down it is. Unless of course its against the coach, then he is all over the ref to correct to the "down marker box".

I'm pretty sure Coach P took Ayala to the CIF Finals twice in the mid to late ninetys, if you have a CIF Finals program from this year, you can verify that.....so I wouldn't exactly say one and done every year....maybe thats all the them Glendora boys got? He runs the same offense he did at Ayala. Didn't he coach someone else around these parts?? I doubt he had a losing record there either......I wanna say I was the first to coin the phrase "Coach Shottenheimer" back in the fall, at least I remember it that way. I feel bad about that know...but not that bad......hey tartan4life thanks for the info, I woulda never bet that they won a CIF championship in football.......89 huh?, Our (DB) last one was in '99, and that feels like a long time ago.....

tartan4life said:

The last time Glendora was good was during Dean Karnoski's reign. 5 baseline league titles in a row 89-94. 1 cif title in 89 and 2 more semi appearances, plus two more quarters. They had tough players like JJ O'laughlin, Bill Zernickow, Chris West, Bobby Baeza and Kurt Bowman. These guys weren't big, or fast but they would hit you and they played like thier coach. Coach Karnoski rest in peace. You were the Best!

FeelingU said:

Mike you make some very valid points on Pasquerella. That program is stuck right about where a Pasqie coached team is going to be and have been in the past.Too bad because he has so much potential. I think you were saying that it is time to step it up a notch and prove that he can get pass a first round appearance.

Mike said:

A.T.

I moved to Glendora during the last three years of A.D. Lopez's tenure who by the way was 18-33-1 in five seasons.

I think A.T. what your saying is....

"But hey Mike the Clone, isn't “Pasqy an improvement over Lopez?"

Well yes.... I'll give "Pasqy Schottenheimer" a pass the first two years. But by your third year you should have your program in place the kids settled into your program along with your conditioning and weight training programs.

The problem I have is...there is a pattern with him everywhere he goes.... One and Done. I truthfully believe he is not getting the most out of the kids. Nothing personal just a philosophical difference I have with him.

Also Glendora has a staff that is a "Good Old Boy's Club" a lot of guy's most of whom went to Glendora and that's all they know. I guess you can almost say complacent.

But with that said you then run into the problem of economics where young coach's use the high school level as a stepping-stone and move on to assistance jobs or better yet head coaching jobs and teaching jobs.

The days of the Coaches like "Coach Lou" are basically over. It’s getting harder and harder to find loyal coaches who are willing to take a few thousand dollars and dedicate the time needed to have a successful program, and Aram you above all should know about tradition rich programs (Temple City).

But yes “Bagpiper U has evolved, but I’ll say it again don’t sell these Glendora kids short they have the desire and the heart they just need the right direction.

So “Coach P Schottenheimer put a guy upstairs who can help you with a game plan and put the headset on yourself, get some input from others and get creative. Use your time outs effectively instead of looking down to the ground and up in the air deciding which way the wind blows. These Glendora kids are willing to lay it on the field for you, just give them half a chance and surround yourself with good people. No one is asking for your head on the chopping block or willing to see you to fail, we just want to see you and the kids succeed.

Out!

Mike, I'd luv to see how you act in front of Coach Shottenheimer. I'm picturing him blowing you off, but I wonder how hard he would slam into your place back in the old basement....

Did Glendora have a string of league championships before he came on the scene?? I KNOW THEY DIDNT HAVE ANY CIF STRING OF CHAMPIONSHIPS....He's probably getting the most he can outta these kids of yours....Wait, wait, I know,...your right, and everybody who actually has a say in the hiring and firing is simply wrong........What was I thinking questioning you?? Cuz your the "all knowing"........well no wait a sec,........your a nobody (just like the rest of us)questioning a proven winner coach.

Coach P is all about running the ball. Thats the first step in football. If thats how he's gonna play it, you have to have a stifling defense, so you dont fall behind and look like pop warner kids trying to pass the ball. Your boys just couldn't play that way in week 11.

YOUR NOT GETTING A NEW HEAD COACH. He's staying, he's a good fit. You have a good thing going. If your so goddamn smart, how can you not see that????????

Your Pal, Randolio

Anybody else catch the DB-Damien bb game last night? Great game, they were tied at 11 after 1. They were tied at 24 at half. They were tied at 34 at the end of 3. DB had the ball, with 22 seconds left in the game down by 3, but could not get off a final shot.

That Griff hit some big shots going down the wire, and prior to that he must of had at least 10 assists that seemed to pull the Spartans out of every bind they got into. He cuts to the hoop, the D stops his drive, but he dishes out to the open man WHEREVER he is down low, and they score. Very smooth. DB kept Riley from getting off, he seemed frustrated at the end.

Damien will get run off the court against a faster team with alittle more poise next week. DB blew some fast break turnover points, and hit maybe 50 percent from the free throw line. They may have cut their own throats too with some indecision handling the ball. BUT THEY HAVE NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF! They took the supposed best team in league to the last minute of the game, after going 2-8 last year at this time.

One game at a time, we gotta bag Chino tomorrow, then get ready for the playoffs next week.

Get us there CAM!!!!

Cop/Coach

Todd is a great kid, he probably could play at the JC level or maybe a small school somewhere. But his size is a factor, Sounds like he doesn't have the desire. I'm sure whatever Todd decides I'm sure he will be just fine. Great kid!

The one thing about this years team was that while they all may not have been the most talented bunch they all worked very hard and went through a lot of adversity. Some of which I have mentioned here before (i.e. game prep/planning, personnel moves.)

One thing about the Glendora kids they work hard, and dedicate themselves. It's just a shame. some sell these kids short.

Not once in this blog have you heard about "Bagpiper U" recruiting or a bunch of "so called" prep stars knocking the door down to get into Glendora.......nah the Glendora kids know the deal. Besides who wants one or two "self serving" super stars when you can work as a team and acheive a team goal and enjoy the high school football experience.

You work hard and apply yourself, your gonna get noticed no matter where your playing. Beleive me I know.

An old roomate of mine was on the staff at Arizona State and ask me about Jacob Crook a couple years back, now there is a perfect example. Glendora wasn't exactly a big named football school but Crook was recruited nationally out of "Bagpiper U". I remember bumping into Pete Carroll on the Glendora campus after tossing the ball around with Crook. It doesn't get any better recruiting wise than playing catch with coach Carroll.

I'll take the "bust your asses" Glendora kids anytime..I can only imagine if my "bagpipers" had a head coach and staff who can get them to the next level.

It all comes down to coaching doesn't it?

Are you kidding me..."Pasqy Shottenheimer"...... "Savvy"? You must be drinking from the "button wearers" Kool-Aid punch bowl.

I mean come on Aram anybody can figure this guy out and the “pop warner game plan he brings to Friday nights…. there's nothing "savvy" about him at all.

If it weren’t for a bunch of dedicated of kids at Bagpiper U "Pasqy Shottenheimer" would be coaching at some cellar dweller doormat like Mark Keppel

2006 was another year with untapped talent and another year of one and done...

Hey "button wearers" consider raising the bar next year and quit selling these kids short and set the second round as a goal. eeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrr.... But then again, getting to the second round just might expose your beloved "Pasqy Shottenheimers" savvy weaknesses even more.

But on a nicer, calmer Mike the Clone note:
