Why would young talent in the Hacienda Heights area go to Wilson over Los Altos? Well do you want to play your senior year or have some recruit given your spot your senior year. Look at Gano's track record. Tell me the last local kid to play QB or RB at Los Altos. Estrada, Castro are a couple of them but I had to go back three four years, it's been a while. Now let’s talk about the future QB's and RB's. Gano recruited a couple this year from Bishop and one from Diamond Bar. He has the two good looking freshmen Sanchez and Ramirez that are working their way through the system, the problem is they may never play varsity ball at Los Altos due to Gano’s recruiting policy. Now you have his freshman coach Booth who is bring in his son from West Covina. Booth has made it very clear that his son is the freshman quarterback and he is going to get a free ride on the freshmen and JV team. So if you are a incoming freshmen at Los Altos don't even waste your time at that spot. Bottom line, if you have a kid that isn't going to be playing one of the skilled positions he has a good chance of playing his senior year at Los Altos. If you are a senior and playing one of Gano's skilled spots you better be looking over your shoulder for one of Gano's recruits. Drayton (Montobello), Ira Thomas, Sandello(South Hills) , Castenada (Bishop), James Davis (Monrovia), Randal Brown (Rowland), this is just a few off the top of my head. What the heck this year Gano only recruited one QB and two RB's, what spots are left for the kids that worked their way through the Los Altos system.
well thats what is missing here that you have to think of it in these terms ya LA had a good frosh squad but they also benfited from the previous midget and jr midget team form the 05 yr. That had the jr,midget with ramierz and sanchez that went to florida. and the midget team that had some really good players on it. So LA basically got a total team of skilled players. But with the wilson jr. midget team this yr being as good as they are they have been coached by these guys since they were little so they have loyalty to the coaches there at wilson now. So it only takes one good class to get a program turned around need i remind the class the wilson had back in 97-98 when they had a awesome class the won cif.

I don't doubt your insight for a minute, I'm appalled and perplexed at the notion that they would try and sell Wilson, when you have the ticking time bomb loaded with tradition waiting to errupt down the street at LA. Especially in that small community, and this pint sized valley, where if "we" want to be or have a serious contender/marquee program, we have to be selective and consciously so. We only have room for less than a hand full of true powers, considering geographic restrictions, example: Charter Oak(North), South Hills(central), Los Altos(south), Bishop Amat(private/west), Damien(private/east), etc. There is only so much talent to go around in a small valley like this. If this "selling" of Wilson prevails then all we are going to have is two "good" programs with one or two marquee D-1 prospects year after year. Then that makes HLP pointless!! Worthless, at best.
p.s. I transfered from Wilson as an incoming Sophmore.

I am an LP Warrior JAA alum as well. That is sad. But, the better players typically would end up as you said at Amat, or at LA.
Where are the "blue chip" players from HLP going to High School so far?
I've heard of a very good QB,and RB from the '05 National runner-up team. One is named Ramirez, the other I believe Sanchez, forgive me if I am wrong.
Where are/did they head for?
I know that there is a Magallon, and a Rodriguez as well. Where are the marquee players heading. Who is playing where, if they have moved on to H.S.??
For what it's worth, I attended last years (2006) LA/Wilson frosh game at LA. I think Wilson had less than 40 players on the sidelines, compared to LA's 70+. Wilson only attained one first down in the first half, and the very next play the Wilson qb got chased out of the pocket, and knocked out of the game. Maybe Wilson's Cinderella uprising will begin next year...
ok here is the what really is going on at HLP park i have coached there the last 2 years and yes this HLP park is a feeder program for LA but it also is serving wilson. But at the same time it has hurt the JAA program at LP. But this is due to recruiting at the lowest of levels i know that i coached the team that finished runner up for the CA/OC championship this last season only lost came to los Alamitos. that won the popwarner super bowl. That is the type of talent that is running around HLP park now. But more of it has to do to like i said recruiting half my team this season was from Pico Rivera and La Puente we didnt have very many hacienda height kids. Maybe 5 out of 28 were. But it is like that on all levels. But the thing that this program does provide is that all the levels rep. differnt high schools. Wilson is represnted and so is Bassett along with LA. the pres of the park works manly with Wilson high and from what i here has his national champ team is heading to wilson next yr. While the midget program was mostly a team made up of kids from montery park being coached by the freshmen coaches from los altos. So this park is feeding into both schools Wilson and LA. The sad thing for me is that i grew up in Lp. and played warriors and now they look like they may fold soon. And that is why Workman and LP high are stuggling. No feeder program anymore. Bishop on the other hand is hurting from this cause they used to get alot of kids from the Warrior program i know when i played there 10 kids from my team went there to play. But with kids now playing for the HLP there are being geared to play at wilson and LA cause they have coaching staffs there as the kids coachs that are recriting kids to go to those to schools. So i look for LA to keep strong in the next 4yrs and a rise from wilson. An dare i say bassett will shake things up with there jr. pee wee team being coached by bassett alumni and are planting them for a trip to change that schools program...
remember you need at least a 2.0 to play high school, you can be great in pop warner or jr all american but if you dont have the grades your not playing high school. big promblem in the SGV not the OC they have alot of privite schools more money over there. not knocking SGV because i live here its just the truth... sorry

are you serious?! Why the hell would they do that?! I hope that is NOT true, or atleast only with a few, scratch that, only a COUPLE of coaches, and not the entire program. I thought one of the main objectives was to to sort of duplicate what a couple of the Orange County programs do, basically act as "farm teams" or "feeders" for the local powers, in this case the powers being LA or BA. Paricularly LA considering that thier name is partially on the program.
If the LA boosters gave the HHLP so much money do you think they'd take wilson's name off the program?? Someone write a check! Besides they can have the Cougars. That's a fair trade.
You're right LA and Bishop (Mostly LA) are benefiting from this new group of talent. But what I don't understand. The coaches that are coaching HLPPW keep pushing Wilson H.S. on every kid.

Lets stop this little love fest for second. I would like to conduct a little "forecasting". This is a question that pertains to "what's next?" on the SGV Football horizon.
Let me start by comending the local youth sports organizations, particularly youth football. We are home to some competitive teams, a few good teams, and a couple great teams.
However, there is a new organization that has really been making some noise. The Hacienda-La Puente Pop-Warner Football team. They have played in the national tournament in Orlando, FL in their first two years of existance. Apparently there are some very good young players in this organization. I realize that a few may very well be from outside the vicinity of the Hacienda Hts./La Puente area, and a couple of those players may choose in to attend their local H.S., but let's be honest in the SGV like in all other areas(hence the O.C.), the local powers are always "fed" out of town talent. Particularly . . . you guessed it= Bishop Amat and Los Altos, particularly from this region of the SGV, naturally.
My question is: Who so far is reaping the benefits of the HHLP Pop-Warner? Who are they acting as the "feeder" or "farm" to?
Will this organization, with their continued success be able almost single-handedly breed a true LOS ALTOS/BISHOP AMAT rivalry?
My opinion is atleast one game, maybe two in the near future. I personally as an SGV football fan/alum demand an annual contest.
Let's not forget the bigger guys who playing other sports due weight requirments in pop-warner and JAA. Namely basketball. baseball, soccer, wrestling, but are football players.

I have an offer you, the SGV Godfather cant refuse. Its an idea to end all the AMAT B.S. spilling out over this blog. How about you broker the deal for a game in '07 between Los Altos and Amat. You can sit between both head coaches (I use that term loosely for Verti)and both A.D.s and see who blinks first. I bet it wont be Gano. I also bet he will agree to play at Keiffer. NO EXCUSES for AMAT then. You could then post the play by play from the meeting on your site. You said yourself that everybody wants this game, and the coaches read this blog, so make the necessary calls Aram. TIME for the "mighty men" to man up. The build up for the game would be incredible.

Maybe they don't live up to your standards but the kids play hard for them, they enjoy competing as a team and ultimately they continue to win.

Keyword "PLAY"...You are so dead on....Gano does not "PLAY" what he does not have a chance of beating. Gano does not "PLAY" Bishop Amat in fear of getting beat down. Gano Cannot "PLAY" with the OC teams, hence El Dorado....He does need to step up and schedule some better teams than he had been but maybe he is afraid he will racked in non league and suffer injuries then lose in league and really look like a idiot which he is not because he "PLAYS" the so so teams to protect his image of a great coach image. I am sure he is a good coach heck he has been doing it long enough. I guess that is what La Verne was not looking for ...a good coach because they may be looking for a great coach. Although, I second your comment coach, I must admit that the time for Gano to schedule a heavyweight is long over due. If he wants some of his tranfer players as frosh, he might want to up the ante a bit. Prospects and their parents need to see "black and white" results on the field, and in the newspaper; why should Little Papito go to Los Altos instead of Bishop Amat, or Damien, St.Paul, etc? Why go to Los Altos when Junior can go to Chino Hills or Diamond Ranch? Atleast he'll get smacked around by Mission Viejo on T.V., right? We might even be losing kids to programs like Mater Dei or Servite. Who knows? But the answer lies in strength of schedule and results. The Conq's CAN play with those teams. Keyword PLAY, for all you haters out there!
Gano has had tremendous talent, but it's not like he just let's those players go out there and play with no structure. He gets the most out of talented kids. They have a good system on both sides of the ball and nobody is bigger than the program. The kids all like playing for him which is a tribute to him, especially when you are talking about tremendous athletes. No, he won't be at La Verne and that's La Verne's loss. It's not like he's beat up on bad teams for 10 years. He has scheduled the best teams around and beat most of them. What he has done the last 10 years makes him more than just a "good" high school coach. Those people that know him know that he understands X's and O's as well as anyone.
I wouldn't call Gano a coaching God, he is a good high school coach who has tremendous talent. Xs and Os are definitely nothing special....

I guess we will have to wait and see what Damien can do without the experienced play makers they had last season. My bet is Chino Hills and Glendora will battle it out for the top position in the Sierra League next season. CH always puts together a contender and Glendora will be returning a hard hitting experienced defense and a talented young QB.
Damien's back-up QB, next season's starter, would've been one of the best in the area but he was behind Mendrun. His name is Danny Pertusati, and Damien will have another good QB next season with him under center.
Damien had the best QB in the Sierra League this past season. Take away the QB, you got an average team. Will be interesting to see how Damien does this next season without their star QB!

Hey righteous one...Damien's worst game was against Temescal Canyon followed closely by second half against Claremont. Actually Damien played well against Los Altos but were outcoached. Even the players admit that why can't you? You had a great season. Everyone in the valley accepts that why not give props to the teams that beat you fair and square?

Rodriguez does look like he will be a monster out there and putting him at TE brings back memories of Cody playing that position....but the big question is who is going to get him the ball. there is no Castaneda this year. And please dont tell me that Amat transfer kid Tillis?.......Inexperience at the QB position will not help Rodriguez bring his game to the Maximum. Any thoughts?....transfer deadline has passed.

Reminded me of when I was umpiring. I was doing a game in the WSGV and had a coach that I threw out of a high school baseball game in the early 90's just out of control. Only thing was this goof ball I threw out of that game went down the street punching car windows out.
Great game and Casteneda out played Mendrun. As for Gano, he just about handed the game to Damien by not punting and making Damien go the distance instead of a short field. Watch out for Rodriguez this coming year, this kid will be a monster at TE.
Well, looks to me like the "endzone" controversy isn't borne out by the film... the ball was fumbled before he was in, just like the white hat called it.
My favorite part is when Gano loses it toward the end of the video. You can see the bad, personal foul call on the play when Mendrun gets sacked and has the ball go toward the Damien sideline. Williams picks it up as the whistle is blowing and the LA kid tackles him for a personal foul. Wow, Gano lost it. That play moved Damien to inside the LA 30 and kept what could've been the winning drive alive.
My two favorite plays are Mendrun's long run early in the game and Rodriguez's touchdown catch. Great players, great game.

well thats what is missing here that you have to think of it in these terms ya LA had a good frosh squad but they also benfited from the previous midget and jr midget team form the 05 yr. That had the jr,midget with ramierz and sanchez that went to florida. and the midget team that had some really good players on it. So LA basically got a total team of skilled players. But with the wilson jr. midget team this yr being as good as they are they have been coached by these guys since they were little so they have loyalty to the coaches there at wilson now. So it only takes one good class to get a program turned around need i remind the class the wilson had back in 97-98 when they had a awesome class the won cif.

Ramirez, Sanchez are attending LA right now.
There is another real good player that will be going to Wilson this coming year last name VEGA.
From what I've heard he was thinking on going to LA but decided on Wilson.
I hope he does the same and transfers back to LA!
Funny thing those coaches at Wilson attended Los Altos as students.

I don't doubt your insight for a minute, I'm appalled and perplexed at the notion that they would try and sell Wilson, when you have the ticking time bomb loaded with tradition waiting to errupt down the street at LA. Especially in that small community, and this pint sized valley, where if "we" want to be or have a serious contender/marquee program, we have to be selective and consciously so. We only have room for less than a hand full of true powers, considering geographic restrictions, example: Charter Oak(North), South Hills(central), Los Altos(south), Bishop Amat(private/west), Damien(private/east), etc. There is only so much talent to go around in a small valley like this. If this "selling" of Wilson prevails then all we are going to have is two "good" programs with one or two marquee D-1 prospects year after year. Then that makes HLP pointless!! Worthless, at best.
p.s. I transfered from Wilson as an incoming Sophmore.

I am an LP Warrior JAA alum as well. That is sad. But, the better players typically would end up as you said at Amat, or at LA.
Where are the "blue chip" players from HLP going to High School so far?
I've heard of a very good QB,and RB from the '05 National runner-up team. One is named Ramirez, the other I believe Sanchez, forgive me if I am wrong.
Where are/did they head for?
I know that there is a Magallon, and a Rodriguez as well. Where are the marquee players heading. Who is playing where, if they have moved on to H.S.??

For what it's worth, I attended last years (2006) LA/Wilson frosh game at LA. I think Wilson had less than 40 players on the sidelines, compared to LA's 70+. Wilson only attained one first down in the first half, and the very next play the Wilson qb got chased out of the pocket, and knocked out of the game. Maybe Wilson's Cinderella uprising will begin next year...

Those couple of coaches happen to be the ones that took the Junior Midgets to Florida.
And happen to be coaching at Wilson.
I'm just saying the junior midget division is probably the most important division. Reason being it's probably the last before going to high school.
I can only imagine.

"Come play with us you'll be a starter!".
Coaches do have power over kids and parents.
I don't think it really matters but I know for sure Wilson is not the place to be!
I just feel sorry for the kids that buy into Wilson Cinderella Dream.

ok here is the what really is going on at HLP park i have coached there the last 2 years and yes this HLP park is a feeder program for LA but it also is serving wilson. But at the same time it has hurt the JAA program at LP. But this is due to recruiting at the lowest of levels i know that i coached the team that finished runner up for the CA/OC championship this last season only lost came to los Alamitos. that won the popwarner super bowl. That is the type of talent that is running around HLP park now. But more of it has to do to like i said recruiting half my team this season was from Pico Rivera and La Puente we didnt have very many hacienda height kids. Maybe 5 out of 28 were. But it is like that on all levels. But the thing that this program does provide is that all the levels rep. differnt high schools. Wilson is represnted and so is Bassett along with LA. the pres of the park works manly with Wilson high and from what i here has his national champ team is heading to wilson next yr. While the midget program was mostly a team made up of kids from montery park being coached by the freshmen coaches from los altos. So this park is feeding into both schools Wilson and LA. The sad thing for me is that i grew up in Lp. and played warriors and now they look like they may fold soon. And that is why Workman and LP high are stuggling. No feeder program anymore. Bishop on the other hand is hurting from this cause they used to get alot of kids from the Warrior program i know when i played there 10 kids from my team went there to play. But with kids now playing for the HLP there are being geared to play at wilson and LA cause they have coaching staffs there as the kids coachs that are recriting kids to go to those to schools. So i look for LA to keep strong in the next 4yrs and a rise from wilson. An dare i say bassett will shake things up with there jr. pee wee team being coached by bassett alumni and are planting them for a trip to change that schools program...

remember you need at least a 2.0 to play high school, you can be great in pop warner or jr all american but if you dont have the grades your not playing high school. big promblem in the SGV not the OC they have alot of privite schools more money over there. not knocking SGV because i live here its just the truth... sorry

are you serious?! Why the hell would they do that?! I hope that is NOT true, or atleast only with a few, scratch that, only a COUPLE of coaches, and not the entire program. I thought one of the main objectives was to to sort of duplicate what a couple of the Orange County programs do, basically act as "farm teams" or "feeders" for the local powers, in this case the powers being LA or BA. Paricularly LA considering that thier name is partially on the program.
If the LA boosters gave the HHLP so much money do you think they'd take wilson's name off the program?? Someone write a check! Besides they can have the Cougars. That's a fair trade.

Lets stop this little love fest for second. I would like to conduct a little "forecasting". This is a question that pertains to "what's next?" on the SGV Football horizon.
Let me start by comending the local youth sports organizations, particularly youth football. We are home to some competitive teams, a few good teams, and a couple great teams.
However, there is a new organization that has really been making some noise. The Hacienda-La Puente Pop-Warner Football team. They have played in the national tournament in Orlando, FL in their first two years of existance. Apparently there are some very good young players in this organization. I realize that a few may very well be from outside the vicinity of the Hacienda Hts./La Puente area, and a couple of those players may choose in to attend their local H.S., but let's be honest in the SGV like in all other areas(hence the O.C.), the local powers are always "fed" out of town talent. Particularly . . . you guessed it= Bishop Amat and Los Altos, particularly from this region of the SGV, naturally.
My question is: Who so far is reaping the benefits of the HHLP Pop-Warner? Who are they acting as the "feeder" or "farm" to?
Will this organization, with their continued success be able almost single-handedly breed a true LOS ALTOS/BISHOP AMAT rivalry?
My opinion is atleast one game, maybe two in the near future. I personally as an SGV football fan/alum demand an annual contest.
Let's not forget the bigger guys who playing other sports due weight requirments in pop-warner and JAA. Namely basketball. baseball, soccer, wrestling, but are football players.

I have an offer you, the SGV Godfather cant refuse. Its an idea to end all the AMAT B.S. spilling out over this blog. How about you broker the deal for a game in '07 between Los Altos and Amat. You can sit between both head coaches (I use that term loosely for Verti)and both A.D.s and see who blinks first. I bet it wont be Gano. I also bet he will agree to play at Keiffer. NO EXCUSES for AMAT then. You could then post the play by play from the meeting on your site. You said yourself that everybody wants this game, and the coaches read this blog, so make the necessary calls Aram. TIME for the "mighty men" to man up. The build up for the game would be incredible.

Maybe they don't live up to your standards but the kids play hard for them, they enjoy competing as a team and ultimately they continue to win.

Of course...everyone will blame Amat for being afraid.
The Despain, Gano chickenchit domination of the SGV will continue...but only againt other "dominating SGV teams."

Keyword "PLAY"...You are so dead on....Gano does not "PLAY" what he does not have a chance of beating. Gano does not "PLAY" Bishop Amat in fear of getting beat down. Gano Cannot "PLAY" with the OC teams, hence El Dorado....He does need to step up and schedule some better teams than he had been but maybe he is afraid he will racked in non league and suffer injuries then lose in league and really look like a idiot which he is not because he "PLAYS" the so so teams to protect his image of a great coach image. I am sure he is a good coach heck he has been doing it long enough. I guess that is what La Verne was not looking for ...a good coach because they may be looking for a great coach. Also J-RUMMY Gano is not everything. Give credit to his staff as well...thats where the real coaching lies...

Although, I second your comment coach, I must admit that the time for Gano to schedule a heavyweight is long over due. If he wants some of his tranfer players as frosh, he might want to up the ante a bit. Prospects and their parents need to see "black and white" results on the field, and in the newspaper; why should Little Papito go to Los Altos instead of Bishop Amat, or Damien, St.Paul, etc? Why go to Los Altos when Junior can go to Chino Hills or Diamond Ranch? Atleast he'll get smacked around by Mission Viejo on T.V., right? We might even be losing kids to programs like Mater Dei or Servite. Who knows? But the answer lies in strength of schedule and results. The Conq's CAN play with those teams. Keyword PLAY, for all you haters out there!

Gano has had tremendous talent, but it's not like he just let's those players go out there and play with no structure. He gets the most out of talented kids. They have a good system on both sides of the ball and nobody is bigger than the program. The kids all like playing for him which is a tribute to him, especially when you are talking about tremendous athletes. No, he won't be at La Verne and that's La Verne's loss. It's not like he's beat up on bad teams for 10 years. He has scheduled the best teams around and beat most of them. What he has done the last 10 years makes him more than just a "good" high school coach. Those people that know him know that he understands X's and O's as well as anyone.

Living Legend is right, Gano is not gonna be the head coach at ULV. They've already narrowed it down pretty tight and he's not on the list.

My bet is Chino Hills and Glendora will battle it out for the top position in the Sierra League next season. CH always puts together a contender and Glendora will be returning a hard hitting experienced defense and a talented young QB.

Hey righteous one...Damien's worst game was against Temescal Canyon followed closely by second half against Claremont. Actually Damien played well against Los Altos but were outcoached. Even the players admit that why can't you? You had a great season. Everyone in the valley accepts that why not give props to the teams that beat you fair and square?
Give it a rest and prepare for next year with that .500 coach of yours. Good luck.

Rodriguez does look like he will be a monster out there and putting him at TE brings back memories of Cody playing that position....but the big question is who is going to get him the ball. there is no Castaneda this year. And please dont tell me that Amat transfer kid Tillis?.......Inexperience at the QB position will not help Rodriguez bring his game to the Maximum. Any thoughts?....transfer deadline has passed.

Pretty soon you're going to show film that shows the Damien linemen were not set (one second)before the game winning play at Chino Hills or that Damien had coaches and players on the field yelling to run a play, thereby having too many men on the field...and nullifying the winning TD. Or film showing SJB had time on the clock to call a time out and didn't cheat Damien with a last secon 46 yard winning field goal.

Gano and Co. out coached Morrison and Co. THAT was the game. Look at it this way. That was one of Gano's worst teams in five years vs. one of Damien's best in five years. When was the last time Gano went 2-8?

Breaking news: Gano is still trying to get the La Verne job even after telling his team he's staying at LA. Sounds alot like Nick Saban. Is that the lying we want to teach kids?

That was pretty good when coach loses it. Although he looked like some pop warner coach going off.
Reminded me of when I was umpiring. I was doing a game in the WSGV and had a coach that I threw out of a high school baseball game in the early 90's just out of control. Only thing was this goof ball I threw out of that game went down the street punching car windows out.
Pretty hillarious at the time.

Great game and Casteneda out played Mendrun. As for Gano, he just about handed the game to Damien by not punting and making Damien go the distance instead of a short field. Watch out for Rodriguez this coming year, this kid will be a monster at TE.

My favorite part is when Gano loses it toward the end of the video. You can see the bad, personal foul call on the play when Mendrun gets sacked and has the ball go toward the Damien sideline. Williams picks it up as the whistle is blowing and the LA kid tackles him for a personal foul. Wow, Gano lost it. That play moved Damien to inside the LA 30 and kept what could've been the winning drive alive.
My two favorite plays are Mendrun's long run early in the game and Rodriguez's touchdown catch. Great players, great game.
