UPDATED: Boxing columnist Robert Morales offers his early thoughts ...

This thread was started at the request of loyal blogger MATMTWTBAG, who is an admitted Amat fan. He asked for my thoughts and I will give them and you can share yours.

BOXING COLUMNIST ROBERT MORALES' EARLY THOUGHTS: "I think Oscar is going to win. I think he's going to stop him late, because any time someone has crossed the line and talked as much smack as Mayweather has, De La Hoya has stopped that fighter.

in reference to Mayweather's smack ... "De La Hoya told me today, and I asked him straight out, of those three guys (Ricardo Mayorga, Fernando Vargas and Mayweather), who has been the worst? He said Mayweather, by far. I saw the look in Oscar's eye today, and believe me, he's going to win this fight.

how it's going to happen ... "He's (De La Hoya) still very fast. Mayweather may be faster, but Oscar is still a hard hitter. He's going to be aggressive, yet patient at the same time. When the perfect time comes to crack Mayweather with that left hook, he'll land it and drop Mayweather. I don't think Mayweather can hurt Oscar."

ARAM'S THOUGHTS ABOUT ROBERT MORALES: First off, I should tell you that Morales is an Edgewood High alum. He's also the best boxing writer in the country. You won't find anyone better. He garners a certain respect from the boxers, and I'm talking about the biggest of the big, that other writers just can't get. Morales now works out of the Long Beach Press-Telegram, and I miss our boxing conversations when he was in this office. His opinion is priceless.

ARAM'S THOUGHTS: First of all, I've been saying for a quite a while that May 5 is going to be the best sports day of the year. It's Kentucky Derby day, the fifth weekend of baseball season and last but certainly not least, De La Hoya-Mayweather. Not to mention everything is set in the backdrop of it being Cinco De Mayo on a Saturday!!!! I hate to see what my house is going to look like at midnight.
I haven't been this excited about a fight since I knew Lewis would kick Tyson's ass a few years back. In terms of hype and setting, this could be the biggest fight in quite some time. You can be certain it will shatter all Pay-Per View records and anyone involved is going to get rich.
RACE CARD - You'd have to be a fool to not know, that for whatever stupid reason, African Americans and Latinos haven't been getting along. You can bet that the promoters of this fight will use this as a very strong selling point. I think it's safe to say this is very much going to be viewed the same way Holmes-Cooney was in the early 80s - substitute white for Mexican.
I don't know if it's only a SoCal thing, or what. I don't know if it's really been handed down from the jail cells of black and hispanic gang leaders, but it's definitely going down. And now you have De La Hoya vs. Mayweather. Never before has De La Hoya appeared more Mexican to his fans. I have both black and hispanic friends. My Mexicano friends who used to root for De La Hoya to get beat because he wasn't "true to the game" in their eyes, are all of a sudden HUGE De La Hoya fans. You wouldn't believe the things they said about De La Hoya before he fought Chavez. I'm not Mexican, but my girlfriend is, several of my buddies are and so on. I'm just wondering, if Mayweather beats De La Hoya, is Cinco De Mayo ruined?
This fight is so great that it shouldn't be about race, but it will be.
ANALYSIS: I actually like De La Hoya to win the fight. I think he has to knock Pretty Boy out to win, because you can't beat him in a technical fight. But, I kinda question who Pretty Boy has fought. I thought that Zab Judah, who isn't that strong, actually held his own for much of his fight against Mayweather. I don't think beating Gatti is anything special. Meanwhile, you look at De La Hoya and see nothing but great wins AND losses against GREAT fighters. I think De La Hoya is stronger, fast enough and will be very inspired. I don't think Pretty Boy can knock him out and his only shot is to out-point him. I'll take the +200 with De La Hoya.

Ex-Falcon,

Hip-hop is wack. I prefer early 90s rap. Nonetheless, I like the new The Game CD.

Don't sweat it, I will keep this thread up. By fight time, you'll probably have to go to the monthly archives to find it. But I will start a new one after the fight anyway.

GET WHAT,

Sure the golden boy has fought bigger name then MAYWEATHER has, BUT THE GOLDEN BOY LOST MOST OF THOSE FIGHTS (Except chavez when he was old and the whitiker fight with everbody thought he lost)!!!!!, What dont you underestand about that? Dont let your emotions or pride get the best of you. what other Evidences do you need. i dont even understand this blog anymore, all you women posing as men say the same thing, "it cinco de mayo", "he's faced better boxer"(and lost), and my Favorite "He has heart", with im sure he does, but paln and simple MAYWEATHER IS A BETTER BOXER AND IS FASTER PERIOD!

ARAM,
on may 6, 20007 could you plaese update this blog, i dont want to hear the golden boy fan say they cant find it, if not, i will post comment of girls softball until i find these GOLDEN BOY FOLLWERS.

Falcon,

Hope you are here May 6th and I dont want to hear any excuses why The Pretty Boy Lost to the Golden Boy........Sure Mayweather has not lost but he has been in the ring with who?..he is stepping in with a true Champion of 6 different weight classes..a verteran of the ring. A promoter bigger than Aram and Don King all of sudden. What can I say this day is made for Oscar De La Hoya it is too bad that Floyd was stupid enough to be the person to take this fight. It is Hollywood and Oscar is the Star...get it now?

first off, nobody said not one single word about hip/hop. second, if you knew anything about the culture maybe you could understand it. Instead of making judgement of stuff you see on tv. (With is controlled by Corporations) So dont talk! As far as desire, Nobody in this blog knows the desire MAYWEATHER has! But since he has not LOST 1 FIGHT i'm going on a limb and say he is pretty good fighter with heart. As far as money, if i knew i could be the GOLDEN BOY and make more money then ever i have,i would do it to. There isnt to many people (expect the few emotional recks on this blog, and larry merchant with hates MAYWEATHER) who has the BALLS to put there money on the golden boy. So get a grip, The golden boy's pride will get him beat once again.

Dont the hate the player, hate the game!

If MONEY is your only, hell I'll say PRIMARY motivation for ANYTHING, you've already lost, and you're NOTHING, but a pretender.
This hip-hop/pop-culture B.S. is starting wear on my damn nerves!!

I hope for all of you Mayweather supporters that "pretty boy" is coming with a competitors "pure desire", and NOTHING less. That's right I said LESS, not MORE. Anything less than the pure desire to be the champion is PURE crap!

EX-FALCON,

Is that why when they ask most boxers who they would like to fight their next fight against thay all say that same name....Oscar DLH....from the early days of Chavez, Camacho, Jessie James Leia to the likes of Shane Mosley, Fernando Vargas, Tito Trinidad, Bernard Hopkins...all wanted to get in the ring with guy that can sell seats and PPV......Promoting his fight is one thing but Merriweather has gone overboard with all his thug lingo and his Hood Rat instincts...If he thinks that is going to get into Oscar head he is mistaken....He should be handling himself more like Ray Leonard instead of Mike Tyson.......He is making himself look like a idiot...especially on May 5th when he gets Knocked Out.

J-rob,

First of all palying dominos is fun, maybe you should try it. What is sterotypical about what mayweather is doing? He promoting his fight, His way! De la hoya doing it a different way. Who can de la hoya fight and make that kind of money with? Somebody who already beat his ass? NO, de la hoya is making money, mayweather is making money! it takes two to tango.

PS Everbody thats think I'm crazy Please be Bloging May 6, 2007.

PPS Thank you to all my fans!

who is JOE AMAT????????

And why is he talking?

EX-FALCON,

playing the race card?...what do you mean nobodys saying floyd should go slap some bones and drink a forty while watching boyz in the hood....Oscar simply is the better fighter with a lot more class than what Flloyd is showing............he is talking trash like all the rest that DE LA HOYA HAS DESTROYED....Floyd will be another piece of meat Oscar racks up....why is the hood coming out in Floyd?...he should be acting professional , after all Oscar is the name that is making Floyd and his family big money....

all you guys can play that race card if you like, De la hoya getting his ass beat! be stupid go to vegas, hell go to the indian casino and put your hard earned money on de la hoya, I'm not, but hell, who i'm I.

De La Hoya KO's Floyd in the 11th...Larry Merchant and Sugar Ray Leonard are picking De La Hoya to win this fight...someone knows something.

it is about the money, Thats why im taking all bets. Mayweather over De la hoya. somebody be man and bet me!

"And everybody said a Cinco De Mayo"....Oscar is going to turn Pretty Boy into Ugly Boy...Floyd should go ask Fernando Vargas about what talking smack does to Oscar....Floyd will be sorry and will still be talking some more after the fight, but this time it will be no more trash talking just nothing but excuses and how he wants that second fight for more Money......Floyd should be thanking Oscar for the opportunity to make the biggest bucks he will ever see...Oscar in 9

Follow the money...if Mayweather wins...there's a rematch!

If De La Hoya wins....there's a rematch with Sugar Shane Mosley for $$$$$$$$$$$$ money!

Or if Mayweather win....no more big $$$$$$$$ ever again. Smart money is that Mayweather goes the distance feels cheated and the $$$$$$$$ gets bigger.

When De La Hoya loses it's time to retire and Mayweather becomes DeLa Hoya's money machine with Sugar Shane vs. Mayweather!!!!!!!!

Either way the $$$$$$$$$ dictates the outcome.

If Mayweather keeps talking look at Oscar's putisas of loudmouth gangsta talkers! NOT GOOD!

Either way WE LOVE YOU OSCAR DE LA HOYA FOR EVERYTHING YOU REPRESENT AND THE WAY YOU ELECTRIFY THE SPORT!

GRACIAS!

E-mail me robjballl_175@hotmail.com. hook, line and sinker.

If age hasn't caught up with Oscar I can see him having the speed & smarts to catch Mayweather
& hurt him, I'm sure he still has the power cause that stay's with you longer than your speed. At 34 years of age his quickness might be a notch
slower than a few years ago, that would be a problemm vs Mayweather, we'll find out on fight night. I think he will still have the speed and with his big fight experience, he will come through with a late TKO.

Thanks for joining me in another edition of the legends lounge...

Just a couple takes on this fight...hey Ex-Falcon excuse me but
De la Hoya could not beat Shane Mosley either....anyways Mayweather has to add 7 pounds for this fight, it is not his natrureal weight...if he adds the weight in the lower half of his body he should not lose his quickness and add a little punching power...however if adds the weight to his upper body (which happens alot) the hand speed slows down and with that maywheather's power would dip and he could be in trouble.....so who wins this fight...maywheather should...in the end i think he is just too quick and young for de la hoya.....but since i am a betting man i am going with oscar and +200 money line...

MATMTWTBAG,

Cinco De Mayo has nothing to do with anything, that like saying if they fought on Dr Martin luther King B-day Mayweather is going to get special powers. de la hoya old, Mayweather has beatin Every single person that was put in his face, Moyerga is Overated, he cant even beat shane mosley, I wish I could bet you money, but its all good. Just get the pay per view and watch your boy get His hat get handed to him. this close crap is only to sell tickects and payperpview, WAKE UP!!!!

I hear people can look great on camera b/c you don't really know them. They give you want you want to hear, but then, when you meet them in person, is a whole different story. The mask is pulled off. Get it.

X-FALCON

talk to me on May 6th.....Your boy is going down as well as your pocket book...you will be sorry you took the opposition vs DLH on Cinco De Mayo...this fight is made for DLH, remember DLH is a promoter..they have the odds in thier favor..i hope you dont bet too much ...

MATMTWTBAG,

blah, blah, blah put your money were your mouth is. I dont need know drawn out statement. Its simple MAYWEATHER IS GOING TO BEAT DE LA HOYA. Unless your talking money, dont talk!

Jeremy,

All of it cracks me up, to tell you the truth. The bottom line for me is that I'm American before anything else. If they can't handle that, then too bad.

X-Falcon,

Merriweather does not have KO power and fights a rack em up points type fight. He is moving up to 154 pounds to fight De la Hoya so he really will have no KO power. Zab Judah was doing a number on Merriweather until Unky Roger went crazy. Then for his last fight Roger is seen behind the glass in jail...too much drama for one family. .... Floyd will need more than his mouth when he steps in the ring with DLH. DLH lives for the Big fights and will not let down his people on Cinco De Mayo. This is a story book boxer we are talking about. The biggest draw boxer since Ray Leonard, Julio Ceasar Chavez and Mike Tyson... Floyd being the favorite in Vegas right now. is a scam for everyone to bet on him, then Oscar beats him and Vegas cleans up $$$$ big time...dont get sucked into Floyd and bet big money because you are in for a dissappointment. Meldrick Taylor was also the favorite the nite he fought Julio Ceasar Chavez, and like Floyd was the younger of the two. Well we all know what happen that nite with Meldrick ahead, he got his Ass KO'd....Floyd has not been in the ring with a boxer that hits as hard as Oscar...he will feel the differance right away when Oscar lands one, then he will panic and fold...do not get fooled by the hype of this fight and the Merriweather antics because that is all it is...as Floyd approches the ring on the 5th of May he will find out that he should have kept his mouth shut and not antagonize a true professional like DLH.....Styles make fights and this one looks to me like the Meldrick Tylor Chavez fight ......People lost big money on Tylor that nite....Be careful X-Falcon.

Aram,
do they look at you like"why not?!"? My favorite is after the excange they shake thier head, or look disapointed in you as they walk away.

Isn't being mixed great? Not ethnic enough, not white enough.

AT,

I'm sure Elizabeth is a great gal.....but you know me I have this thing for Nisha.....LOL

Ok here comes the suck up!!!!

Elizabeth, Aram is a great guy I have never met him in person but I'm pretty sure he's a pretty good guy.

Late!

Mike the Clone

Mayweather who,

A bro I'm taking bet's bro. whatever kind of bet you wont. de la hoya has not beat a good boxer in like six years. stop it, a i'm cocky just like mayweather. dont be mad.

Can we get someone to translate when Mayweather speaks ? I wish I could understand what he's talking about. Anyways Oscar is the bigger better boxer period (Mexican or not). He can take anything and everything pretty girl has to give, and he will knock Mayweather out. The Mayweather's claim to be the best of everything, first they need to act like respectable people if they want to be respected, bunch of convicts and wife beater is what they are. The proof is in th pudding ! I hope Oscar beat's the crap out of him, not just beat him but beat the living crap out of him.

Aram,

My Mother is Welch my Father Hungarian.

That makes me WELL HUNG!!

HAHAHA!!!

Jeremy,

What happens to me is Armenian people come up to me and start speaking the language. When I tell them I don't speak it, they look at me with the most disgusted look and say "You don't?" ... then, most of them are done with me. What can you do?

i will take all bet's that mayweather beats de la hoya easy. the only reason anybody gives de la hoya a chance is because of his record. If mayweather is cocky so what! he wins and doesnt lose. that all that matters. you have to be a little cocky in sports. depending on the situation. We all have to remember that is is entertainment with alot of money involved, if mayweather was bland, knowbody would care. about the fight and dont bring up that class crap, cuz at the end of the fight huge and say how much they respect each other.

Aram,
I can relate man. I'm half Mexican/half White(Irish), OR in my terms a Whitixcan,Wheatcracker, or my favorite, which is a sort of biological/geneological/ethnic equation if you will: Mexican+Irish=ALCHOHOLIC!! Kidding of course, well except for the weekends, and family parties of course.
Anyway, Aram just remember US hybrid kids are the new symbol of the melting pot that this country truly is.

i'm not sure, i think i got my money on mayweather. but its usually the guy who runs his mouth the most ends up losing. but i do think mayweather will be way more agressive then de la hoya.

Mike,

No, it's not Nisha. Her name is Elizabeth, she interned at the Trib last summer.

This fight isn’t going to come down to who aggravated his opponent more by “talking smack”, it’s going to come down to jabs, strategy, and training. Are you telling me that Oscar would train any less or hit any less hard if Mayweather acted like a gentleman? I would expect more analysis from a great writer like Morales than the extremely high level explanation that was given. De la Hoya is 7-4 in his last 11 fights and could easily be 6-5 if it weren’t for a controversial decision vs. the “great” Felix Sturm. His victory over Mayorga was impressive but Mayorga has lost 3 of his last 5 fights. Julio Cesar Chavez and Pernell Whitaker were past their prime when De la Hoya beat them leaving his most impressive win over Fernando Vargas. In the biggest fights of his career ,Trinidad, Hopkins, and Mosley, Oscar’s record is 0-4. Mayweather is a great fighter in his prime training for the defining night of his career. It’s going to take more than a look in Oscar’s eye to pull this off. He’s never beat an upper echelon fighter like Pretty Boy while that fighter was in his prime, is that going to change at 34 when Oscar’s on the downside of his career? We’ll see but I wouldn’t put my money on it.

Greetings!

I am Mike the Clone and you are NOT!

Sorry guys as for Boxing I stopped watching it years ago…. too much B.S. involved. I guarantee you that after this fight there will be a re-match and more hype and people will shell out another forty- five bucks to watch the spectacle of a bunch of thugs and hanger- on's. I do admit I’m interested in the outcome, but I don’t see myself forking out half a C-note to watch the Pay Per View.

So on May fifth I’ll save that forty –five bucks buy a case of beer, a bottle of Presidente, some carne asada marinade and some pollo marinade, fire up the Weber BBQ and invite my Hispanic buddies over so they can laugh at his big ole corn fed biscuit eating white boy celebrate Cinco de Mayo like most Gringos do.

Oh and AT. that girlfriend of yours her name isn't Nisha is it? I will be so envious if it is! And if she does have the name "Nisha" you are definitely “THE MAN”

OUT!

Mike the Clone

Aram, why do you use the words "African Americans" and "Latinos" so generally?? Thats kinda politically incorrect. You use "Latinos" as to say its ALL latinos that do not get along with African Americans. Me being Cuban/Black thats actually what people consider "race baiting". I can tell you that as a multi ethnic guy myself..who has Cuban, Pr, and Mexican people in my family , not to mention the large black influence, that there are plenty of latino boxing fans all over that didnt or wont be rooting for De la Hoya. For me , i want the best man to win ...PUNTO!!

Aram,

I'm a Mexican descendant my sister married a Armenian. Plus my wife is Irish. It's all good.

This country is a melting pot.

I hope they just look at this as a fight and not a battle between Races.

May the best American Win!!!

I like those Armenian Bakeries and restaurants over in the Glendale area. Some very good ones off Glendale ave.

I've never heard of him, but I will look into it. I know that given my ethnic name, people think I'm wholly Armenian. I'm actually half and I think that because I don't speak the language many Armenian people I come in contact with view me a lot like how some Mexicans view De La Hoya - as not being a legit or true Armenian or in De La Hoya's case, Mexican. It kinda sucks because I'm very proud of every aspect of my ethnicity.

Aram,

What about the Armenian Raging bull!!

Vic Darchinian (Flyweight Champion)

What's the Baklava!!!

I'm 100% mexican and I have never really rooted for De La Hoya in my life, the only time i rooted for him was against Mayorga, I think I will be rooting for him against Mayweather. I say De La Hoya wins this one. Pretty Boy Floyd has never really impressed me too much.

Thanks Aram for acknowleging me on this topic. As I listened to De la Hoya this morning on Power 106 anounce his intentions in this fight and the press comferance over at Grommans in Hollywood I was enroute to client in that area I drove by to see many people out there and it was looking like the Beatles were about to show up. What De la hoya has stated is that Floyd is talking lots of trash more than Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga ever did and it is fueling his fire to no end. He is praying for more insults from Floyd because it is working to his advantage. They also asked if Floyd senior(Oscars ex manager) would be in Floyd Jrs. corner come the nite of the fight and Oscar assured us that with Floyds uncle Roger in his corner for the fight that having Floyd Senior would cause too much commotion due to too many big egos in one corner. Oscar also went on to say that Floyd Sr. Taught him how to be beat a boxer with Quickness, meaning Floyd Jr...and that is to unload and exchange punches as the quick boxer tries to peck away and run. My take is Oscar wins this fight in a split Decision. Floyd is the favorite and is the younger of the two, but I do agree he has not impressed me his last two fights and Oscar has been in the ring with some heavy duty names...Of course Floyd will try to steal the fight and rack up points but as soon as he get hit by one of Oscars best shots he will realize that it is not going to be a easy fight. Cinco De Mayo will be rocking at my house on that nite and lots of others homes I am sure as well......so to my fellow Mexican Americans and African American friends get that grill hot and load up on the beer because this one is going to be one of the best fights of the decade.....

I will try to get esteemed boxing columnist Robert Morales to comment on this fight. I'd like to hear what he has to say about some of these topics.
