Joe Basketball in the SGV ...

Jon Joe isn't a football player playing basketball. It's the other way around.

First Team
Guard: Griffin Ramme, Damien
Guard: Troy Draves, Wilson
Forward: Jon Joe, San Dimas
Forward: Kyle Gordien, Glendora
Center: Ralph Nevarez, West Covina
Coach: Ron Rice, Northview

Comments

Why can't we just leave it at Mort and McD were two of the best SGV signal callers this decade? They're two totally different players. They both had great games and not so great games, and leave the sport with a ton of great memories.

First of all why are you guys talking about football???????? second of all Ralph Nevarez was a beast this year no contest he should have won player of the Year....West Covina is going to Dominate next year watch out for his younger brother.

Hey Boomer - Yeah Mort sucked so much that we voted TWICE as first team All-CIF Division 7 at QB.

If that is your definition of sucks, you TRULY NEED TO GET A LIFE!!!

bracketology,

MCD is a fearless player thats brings it all when he plays. hes not a typical qb. he has balls. honestly, qb are like the wimpyest guys on the roster, they don't like to get hit. but MCD ran like a fullback, and played on both sides of the ball. mort sucks, he choked against WC in the championship game in 04.

Jerry Santos didn't lead the valley in scoring, Troy Davis from wilson did. so if you would get off SH athletes nutsacks you would realize how stupid your sounding on this blog.

JACKASS!

Anyone who saw McD play and can say with a straight face that he was not a great high school athlete is either being dishonest or never played varsity football.

What a great competitor. Think Psycho from Charter Oak with Mendrun from Damien and sprinkle in some Castaneda from Los Altos and maybe you have half a McD. If intangibles make the difference when two players meet than Mc D had those in spades.

Best of luck finding yourself Mike. Listen to your mother and hit the books. It's not where you've been it's where you're going that defines toughness.

mcd is the better athlete but production wise Mort is better... and fyi, South Hill's schedule is tougher than that of Covina's. Oak Park is only known as being Oak Christian's b**** and Tereso is basically a scrub team when u compare them to the rest of orange county.

for further comparisons btwn the 2 teams, i could even go as far as to talk about some of the players who go to covina via my friends at that school. but i won't go there...

Oh i am sorry brack. MCD 107 td's in two seasons...back to back valley player of the year...anyways who did SH beat to win those championships oh thats right powerhouses such as San Gabrial and Orange...i think if MCD got to play those "powerhouses" instead of teams such as Tosoro and Oak Park he might have a ring or two also...the fact is Mort would have been a back up to McD...thats the truth..dont hate

brack....what? yes to your boy Mort was exceptional but what Mc D did was unreal. Individually Mc D was like looking at Allen Iverson...who will never win a championship but is recognized as a great great competitor...do you agree?

Respect the accomplishments. But yes your boy's are "GREAT" no doubt. Good luck to him and congrats to him but comparing players is like comparing your wife to your ex-girlfriend..."love the one you're with!"

Living Legend: Yeah, you're absolutely right. Kevin Mort 3x CIF-SS Division 7 Champion, 2x 1st Team All-CIF Division 7, 2x 1st Team All-San Antonio League 1st Team vs. Mike McDonough...0 CIF-SS championships.

Good players win league championships, great players win CIF titles. McDonough has zero rings, Mort has three rings.

And those are the facts...sir

I really think Jerry Santos deserved to make the 1st team after all, he did lead his team to SAL Champs as a senior and through second round of CIF. Jerry Santos is a very good player who deserves more than what he gets as of today.

Hey "bracketology" just to let you know Santos did not lead the valley in scoring...maybe the bias over at SH is a bias against education..cause nobody comes on here with more mistaken facts then SH fans...Just like your comment that Mort is 10x better then MCD...do a little research or pick up a paper and read before you come one here and speak out of your ass. Lets see how good SH would be if almost all your athletes did not come from outside your school area...oh wait a mintue we already did see that in the mid 90's and you guys were garbage. Just the facts

The Legend

I had a dream I dunked on Jon Joe....he blocked it!!!!

i played against jon joe in summer league games since my freshman year. he has talent. he almost dunked on us as a freshman. he went over too far and got his elbow above the rim. amazing.

Jon Joe could have broken every San Dimas record instead he's a legend for all the right reasons and his teammates, fans and opponents have had the honor to see him play and conduct himself with honor, dignity and class. What a great athlete and what an outstanding young man. Where is Coach Dorrell or Coach Howland? Jon Joe is simply the best...for ALL the right reasons!

Coach Reed having two coaches come in and pay their respects speaks volumes to your character and your program as well. Best of luck next year. And good luck to jerry...I'm sure he'll be fine.

Normally I would not post anything at a site like this, but after reading some of the comments here I feel compelled to do so.

Jerry Santos is a very good basketball player. I only had the opportunity to watch him play a few times during his high school career, but each time I was impressed. Kids, like adults, sometimes make mistakes. To describe anyone based upon one incident is wholly illogical. Generalizations only hold water when the body of evidence demands that a generalization needs to be made. In Jerry's case I'm sure what he did was done out of frustration and not because of some character flaw.

A final note about Jon Joe. I have been coaching basketball for 22 years with 13 of them spent as a varsity head coach and at no time I have ever encountered a young man as unselfish and humble as Jon. Jon's numbers speak for themselves, but what counts the most is that Jon's interest was always in the success of the team and not individual glory. Jon leaves San Dimas as it's all-time leader in rebounds and blocked shots, as well as being second all-time in scoring and steals. But, what matters most to him is the 18 and 2 record in league over his Junior and Senior season, the two league championships, and the 39 and 19 record overall during the same period.

P. Chase Sucks....
He cheesed up against Los Altos in the football playoffs and he is no way a first or second team Basketball player........had one good game this season I believe against WC........other than that he is not all that....your basic so so player...nothing great about him...

Dont be mad Pchase for not making first team...dont blame Aram...blame yourself for not going to the gym and working your ass off like the first five did....

Are you kidding me fat boy? PChase on the third team? Single reason Rowland competed not to mention won a share of the league title. Put down the donuts and cover a game once in a while before picking the best five in the area. What a joke.

Coach Reed,

I was a little taken aback by the play as it unfolded as well. However, your look at Jerry as he came off the floor was priceless and I was pretty sure that he'd hear about it later. Always best to praise in public and correct in private - as has always been your custom.
Congrats on a good season.

Coach Reed, What a great response. It is a measure of your program that you would come in here and address the issue so professionally. In the end the only thing that will matter when we are old and can no longer run around like we used to is hearing those special words...Hey Coach! Remember me?

I still get chills every time I hear someone ask me that question.

Tough to argue with Jerry Santos credentials. And it's tough to argue with your response to Jerry and your willingness to keep it in house. I've don't both..dressed a player down and kept it in house....the difference is the player, the situation and the decade. Best of luck Coach Reed. Hope to see Jerry Santos at the All Star game.

Aram the floor is yours.

And is there any chance that Willie Trimble can play in that game?

Congratulations to Jon Joe SGVTribune Player of the Year.

Can't wait to see how the SGVTribune All-Stars do against the Pasadena Star News All-Stars this year.

Please publish when the game is AT. I believe the SGVTribune All-Star's are going to get beat pretty bad though.

Ask Freddie - I bet he'll say the same - however I will be rooting for the SGV!

Can't wait for the game.

-Big Reg

The incident, described by "reality czech", at the end of the san dimas game did happen. I didn't say anything to Jerry in the gym. I didn't think our discussion needed to be held in public. Having coached Jerry for (4) years I can attest that he is a classy, unselfish young man who made a mistake at the end of that game. I communicated this with him. Jerry has been a 1st team All San Antonio League Player for (4) years. He has earned a share of the League's MVP award twice. He was selected 1st team All CIF this year. He was 1st team All Valley last year as a junior. His perfomance during the last (4) years has been nothing short of amazing. To characterize a young man by one poor decision that he made at the end of a basketball game is unwise and unfair. Considering the fact that Jerry scored over 20 points 14 times this year and in double figures 24 times, I would think his low scoring game vs. San Dimas should be viewed as a compliment to San Dimas' great team defense that night. Jerry averaged 25 points a game last year, but averaged 20 points a game this year in order to get his teammates more involved. He was 2nd on our team in assists. It might be pointless trying to defend Jerry in a public forum, but when I was told of the comments made towards him on this site I felt I should share that he isn't the player that he has been painted to be and I felt that I owed it to him to let others know that.

Go Kyle you're the man, but where is Dom??

idk about the picks but then idk who 2 replace so i guess it all fits welll

Santos is selfish, and may have blown his chance in the San Dimas/ SH head-to-head matchup when JJ outscored him 25-13 (and Santos only had a couple of baskets in the first half) and Santos pulled one of the most bush league unsportsmanlike acts in the history of the game.

With under 10 seconds to go and a double digit lead, in an act of sportsmanship, an SD player tucked the ball under his arm and extended his hand to shake Santos's. Instead, Santos poked the ball away to steal it and score a layup at the buzzer. The SD players and coaches looked on in amazment as teh SH coach said nothing. I understand that coach had an incident in the Rowland game also. These types of actions should eliminate players from contention, especially when up against classy players like Jon Joe. Congrats to him!

Jon Joe/Griffin fan,

I only write the stories, I'm not involved in the layout or design or headline writing. Obviously somebody goofed when designing that page and/or proofing it. These things happen.

One can't believe that South Hills' Jerry Santos was not a member of the first team. Let's see....leads the valley in scoring...was probably the most influential member of the team....1st team all-CIF selection...but it's nothing new Husky Fans.

One gets the feeling that Mr. Tolegian just has a bit of a bias against SH. After all, how can former 2x 1st Team All-CIF Division VII quarterback Kevin Mort not even be mentioned for honorable mention in 2005 for the all-area team after leading the Huskies to a CIF-SS Division 7 championship?

And believe me, he was 10x better than Mr. McDonough. But that is another argument for another thread.

Great job Aram...you really know your basketball....

Jon Joe fan!!!! How you like me now!!!!

This kid is one of a kind. I hope everything this kid wants he gets. What a privledge and honor to have meet and seen this kid play.

Every wanna-to-be "star" should take a close look at one of San Gabriel Valley's best ever. Class act.

Read your piece on him Aram and it was outstanding. It gave a true insight into his character and athletic ability. I wonder if you could write an article about the people in his life that made him into such a fine young man. They deserve as much credit for his success and I'm sure Jon Joe would appreciate you recognizing them.

Best of luck in football or basketball Jon Joe. Any school would do well to invest some quality "face time" with him and see what he really brings to the table.

Having dealt with too many prima donnas in my life it is refreshing when people recognize true greatness. Can't wait until Jon Joe plays in the Tribune/Star News All Star game. Maybe Aram you could really promote this event big time.

Griffin Fan!!!! How you like me now!!!!!! (part two)

Best of luck to the left handed Silent Bomber! Is it possible to be in a "ZONE" for the rest of your life??!! Maybe Griffin will. This kid is why coaches don't cut the slow, tough, coachable kid that has the love of the game in every pore of his body. Maybe finally Griffin will get the recognition he deserves for "carrying" that Damien squad almost singlehandedly. Best single season record of ANY Damien basketball team ever. Hitting clutch shots time and again. What can you say? Griffin is a STUD. And best of all he's a class act.

SGV FAN: What school could you possible represent? 40 pts? Most high school games are 45-40 on average but they would beat a Joe Joe, Griffin, Gordien, Draves team by 40...how? Never seen Navarez play but I've seen Cunningham and yes Cunningham is tough but he's a Soph. Not taking anything away from him but maybe that was a Senior nod...but again. Didn't see Navarez play. As far as Napalitano guarding anyone...ain't going to happen. He's 12 points (3 back doors tip ins, 3 outside sweet jumpers and 3 rebounds O steals and four "poster dunked on" in this imaginary game. Does he know how how to dribble drive. At 6-5 with no handles what's he bring to the table other than a sweet outside "flatfooted" jumper. Talk about your one dimensional player--perfect Dunn prototype. Must be working extra with those "big man" assistant coaches at Damien. Nice job guys.

Coach of the Year. Nice Rice from Northview. Aram said it best" Great coaches can be put into two catergories. Those that overachieve with what they have and those that don't disappoint when they have the "talent" Congrtas to Coach Ron Rice

No "Coach of the Year" Award for Coach Dunce?

Aram you really do know your stuff!

Although you "might" take some grief over the JON JOE FROM BISHOP AMAT PLAYER OF THE YEAR typo! explain that?

the second team IS the first team. and it has the best player in the valley on it too. did someone at the tribune screw up and get the lists mixed up? how about the front page-A1, listing jon joe as being from bishop amat?! maybe i will start buying the la times.

The second team will kick the 1st team's ass by 40pts. R u kidding me?
