ATTN. READERS: Everybody needs a reset ...

Happy Anniversary, fellow SGV sports fans.
It's been a year since this site was launched as a compliment to the Tribune's prep sports coverage. It was a long time coming, believe me. For the most part, everything has been great. This blog has attracted a lot of hits, which in-turn has brought this area's prep sports even more notOriety. For this, I say thank you. Also, for those of you who've taken the time to share your thoughts and thus produce more comments than anyone could've imagined, I say thank you, too. For the most part, the dialogue has been entertaining, informative and interesting.
But, and there's always a but, this site has developed some problems. The other day I had to speak with our executive editor, Steve O'Sullivan, about something questionable posted on the blog. I've had to speak with managing editor Steve Hunt a few more times than that. And sports editor Doug Spoon even more times than I can imagine. Believe me, I like speaking to these guys, but they're upper management and they make me nervous. The best conversations with upper management are the ones you initiate, not the ones they initiate ... "Hey Aram, got a second?" is something I don't like to hear. Not to mention, there have been times when several people in the office came up to me surprised by profanities used on the site.
Fortunately, upper management has been cool enough to not force me to take anything down and they allow me to run this site how I see fit. I don't believe in censorship. And I don't like sugar-coated sports coverage, whether it's preps, college or pro. But when parents are coming on here and defending their kids, we're getting far away from what this site was intended for. Which is why the decision to produce new rules comes directly from me. When this site started, we had only a few parameters - no kid bashing, personal attacks, foul language or so on. I was also releasing all comments back then. Due to the high volume of comments, there's just no way to catch and release comments as they come in. I'm not about to start doing this, but I will be hitting the delete button more often. Threads that turn bad, will be gone quickly. Here are some new guidelines ...
1. Kid bashing - "Better luck next time" or "Keep your head up" will be the extent of negative comments toward local athletes. You bring up residency or playing time, the post will be deleted as soon as I see it. If you want to complain about playing time, call the coach. If you want to complain about residency, call the school or CIF. High school sports are some of the best times these kids will have, so a bunch of whining adults aren't going to spoil it on this blog.
2. Coaches - If any thread is somehow diverted from its original topic to question coaching policy or discuss the off-the-field lives of any coaches, that thread will be deleted. If you want to question what decisions a coach makes between the lines, then be my guest. If you don't like play-calling or Xs and Os management, then comment away. Personal attacks that get way off topic will be deleted. This also goes for school administrators.
3. Profanity - I've gotten way too relaxed on this, but it's got to tighten up. Obviously, some things will slip through the cracks. But what I'm really trying to prevent is name calling.
By following these three guidelines, I think we can limit some of the problems this site has had recently. I'm confident all of you can still make your points without cussing, bashing kids or attacking their coach's personal life.
If any of these changes sour you, then please move on. I'd rather this site have no hits and no comments than have it degenerate into some anonymous free-for-all that gives this area a bad name, makes high school kids feel bad, ticks off Tribune upper management, embarrasses coaches and causes parents not to enjoy the athletic careers of their pride and joy offspring.
To any athlete, coach or parent whose been offended by something said on this site, I sincerely apologize. I regret that some of these actions may not have come soon enough to spare people their grief. Undoubtedly, there will be similar problems in the future, but hopefully this reset will help calm everything down and re-direct which way this blog is headed.

MAT ...,
It's taken care of. I've made it so profanity in any comments won't make the site. The entire comment will be caught and deleted.
Aram,
Looks like some of that vulgarity is still getting thru.......I guess you cant screen them all.........
hey BI Dog...I think you meant Big Dog but maybe Freud was right...you meant BIgdog.
Walk away.?..is that BI talk for backing down?
Too Late
If you don't like it, get off the blog. Nobody is moving your figures over the keyboard.
Mentorship LOL Right!
I guess your parents didn't teach you how to walk away!
Guns don't kill people ...people kill people
Blogs don't hurt people...people hurt people
I'll give up this keyboard when they pry it from my cold hard hands....
now that's funny!
Glad you feel that way. Think of it as mentorship.
As far as phenomenal comments ..some have been and some have been ridiculously immmature and distasteful. Kind of like yours. Only when I'm wrong I apologize. This blog should be topic driven or pulled. It should be shut down if not respected but ultimately it should be something we're all proud of...maybe next year.
Define "every" by the way....nice try...you know you can't say Armenian without saying "mean"...go figure.
Freedom of Press
Your exactly right! Pretty interesting how Quinley pulled stats off Max Preps.
Playing decisions doesn't equal performance. When the rubber hits the road and we can see the factual stats, he can't take the truth!
If you make your users register, they can't hide their identity by changing their name every time that they post a message. You can also keep track of which users are causing problems and take care of them directly. It would make it easier for you to manage the problems on the blog and enforce the rules of the blog.
Too Late
Now you are speaking for AD's, coaches, parents, kids, criminals, principals and the higher educational system... RIGHT LOL
Funny how you state you would ban Aram from your campus but leave no name! Typical treats with no action!
Aram.. Don’t worry about these posts that make excuse after excuse...Just another opinion from the gallery!
Too late for most,
The things you post under your various names are absolutely phenomenal. Please don't ever leave this blog, you entertain me more than anyone. There's always a "you didn't finish college, Elizabeth, and Fred's got it right" in every post. Awesome stuff!!!
TOO LATE
Mike Mcd made his own decisions and needs to be accountable for his actions. I wonder what the coaches or girls or people he offended feel about Mike MCD. Give me a break!
Too bad is some don't agree with his actions, or the way he conducts himself on and off the field. This is not what we are taught here at Covina.
"Aram, what's happening? I'm gonna need you to cover a track meeting on Saturday. Then, I'm gonna need you to write a tennis preview on Sunday. That would be great. Thanks" Don't worry Aram, you have upper management written all over. You're a real straight-shooter.

2 late 4 most...
DAMN GOOD post. I feel u.
First Imus and now you. Cleaning up your act Aram? A little "house cleaning"?
Well better late than never.
You've been asked by several bloggers to erase hurtful messages and have been very selective as to who and what you have erased. Joe Nory took a beating, Coach Rodriguez took a beating, Damien took a beating, Coach Tom Q. took a beating, and principals took a beating and yet you never seemed to erase those comments. Why because of "hits"...plain and simple. You're top dog. When people asked you to moderate more you often responded by telling them to "blog off" or made snide remarks about their "contributions."
Even when bloggers challeged each other to meet face to face you did not erase those comments. Maybe you just wanted the blog to work itself out and be it's own entity but the truth is the blog is only a reflection of the moderator. Just like kids are a reflection of the parents that bring them up. In the end Aram this blog is "your" baby. You brought it into the world and you're ultimately responsible for what happens here. As you have done now with these new guidelines. This blog could have been about the kids and stragedy and such but it became a way for parents to attack each other and settle old scores.
Actually the guidelines have always been in place. The new part is your sense that being controversial is job threatening at times. Imagine if those two bloggers would have meet in El Monte and someone would have been hurt. Imagine you trying to tell a national media how it was only a blog and you never intended for anyone to get hurt.
Let's be fair. The kids are fair game. The coaches are fair game. The parents are fair game. The principals are fair game. And now the sports writer is fair game. If you would have attended school you would have learned about liability, ethics, social responsibility, management skills and professionalism in journalism but instead you are a work in progress just like your blog. Sometimes you get by on your natural gifts and other times your lack of higher education becomes glaringly evident. That's what kids who go to school learn. That's why there is are separate English and Journalism DEPARTMENTS! It's more than meeting deadlines, proper syntax and being clever it's about the "impact" and "social responsibility" of your product on the community.
Has the blog been a positive or negative to most campuses in our San Gabriel Valley...for the most part....the coaches say NO! Leave the kids out of it! Who watches your every move Aram?
I would have ban you from my campus in protest after what Mike Mc Donough went through on this blog. Yes the bloggers have a right to their opinion but your lack of oversight and refusal to erase and monitor the blog is inexcuseable. Is it fair for people who have NO Varsity coaching experience to critisize head coaches than surely it is fair game to look at your credentials as well as look at the job you did or did not do in reference to this blog.
Why no Head Coach, AD or Principal did not ban you from campus because of your lack of oversight on this blog is remarkable and quite disturbing.
Maybe the bloggers will feel otherwise but you get a "D" for monitoring and managing this site. An "A" for effort and and overall "F" because you failed in your responsibility to the community and the people you covered---high school athletes. I never did hear you apologize to Mrs. Mc D for all the hateful comments you allowed to get on this blog. Remember you provided the forum for all those public hurtful comments. Fred had it right...but then Fred's a pro.
Sorry Aram but maybe Elizabeth can let you borrow a few books. Stings don't it?

Great comments about the whole quinley situtation. What happened at CO is a matter of public accord. No parent was happy about their kids running for two hours after a game in the dark until they threw up. Now if people talk about it and say the coach should not do that, what the heck is wrong with that. Lets lay the blame where it should be. The coach WAS suspended,he DID come very close to being fired and despite a somewhat successful season,(Their league is very weak this year),is still hanging by a thread. All that is being told is the truth. If you dont want your kid subjected to this kind of nonsense then be forewarned if Quinley is still the coach. He lashed out at aram and told him how to do his job. Hey Tom worry about YOUR job and how not to get suspended. It is a joke that you would try to tell someone else how to do his job when you do yours so poorly. Now this is not only my opinion but the facts back it up. Now anybody who wants to say that AD Strycula was wrong about the suspension lets hear it.
Aram
I would have to agree with USA. There is a right and wrong way to approach subject matter.
However, I find it some what ridiculous that parents or coaches that are complaining about the content are the ones who have called out other programs, parents, kids or coaches. For example, a parent didn’t agree with the way Quniley approached a situation last year. Then all hell broke lose. Why, because someone called out a coach for his inappropriate behavior. Then this coach blamed you and the tribune because someone just didn’t agree with him! Who really is the wrong person here? Who really is the adult? Read the passed posts, pretty sad when a coach tries to challenge others to meet him on the field.
Everyone has the right to their opinion and it always isn’t going to be positive, especially when someone sees a different side of the story! That’s America! How many people have different views on the War or our political system right now! Talk about a mess or people bashing others… Unfortunately we live in a free society and everyone is going to have an opinion.
I do agree the language and bashing athletes who give their heart and sole to a sport should stop and kids should stop bashing each other too! But coaches are not GODS and they need to take a good look into the minor and clean up their approach.
Congratulations on one year. I have been here since the begining and though I don't post anymore because of the viciousness of some people I still visit the site everyday.
Hey AT,
I snuck in over there in Freddie's blog. He wasn't kidding man, about how they "tone" things down over on the west side. Here's an excerpt from one of the post over there:
"What a wonderful future ahead for our LC childern where they wont get hurt playing a sport like football and the boys and girls can play together - just like the real world."
I was cracking up when I read that. Do we have to be that soft here now....(laughing)
I guess that's why Arcadia baled out on my "bagpipers" a few years back after that whooping we gave them.
Just having some fun with Freddie!
And congrats on the blog.
Late!
Mike the Clone
Thanks Aram,
I hope all the bashing we can all tone down. It is tough I know I have been drawn into it myself and I admit this honestly. If we keep to the subject line and have this like a table discussion all is good......the Uncle Tony thing really got out of hand...Kid bashing, Racial slurring, and coach bashing is not where we want to take this thing.........I am glad you did this before the football season. That is where all the hate and nonsense comes in here....I am keeping it clean...hope everyone abides by the new rules.
Just stopped in to say congrats for the one year anniversary and that I appreciate the forum to discuss and disagree with my fellow SGV fans/fanatics.
I think you have done a terrific job with the blog and management should take notice and be proud.
I can't wait for football season to start again but in the mean time I enjoy checking out the blog and keeping up with the other sports and learning about some of the truly gifted athletes in the SGV that I never would have know about if not for the blog ( Live in Arizona..so this blog and the Tribs on-line edition are my safety line to keeping in touch with the area sports scene).
Anyway, thanks Aram and here's to another great year of chatting with fellow area sports nuts and many more after that.
Nice job ARAM, this blog was getting unreadible. It was like coming on here and reading about a soap opera everyday. There are too many positive things going on around the SGV when it comes down to the sports scene. Dont get me wrong though, the differences in opinions are cool, but dont get personal about things. What difference is all this gonna make. After all, when these young adults are between the lines, im sure the last thing they're thinking about is the ignorance that some of the readers and writers are putting down on this blog...Keep up the good work.
GO BRAVES !!!!!
Great idea!! No registration needed!!
Good move, Aram. Blogs and message boards can be great and you can really get a lot of information from them, but this is getting ridiculous. Thanks for keeping up the blog. I don't think that I have said anything offensive, but feel free to delete any of my comments you want to!!!
A registration system IS NOT the answer!
Freedom of speech is what this country was built on… There will always be a right way and wrong way to address the issues.
I would agree with number 1 and 3, but coaches are open game. There is alot of bad coaches out there, and there treatment of kids need to be cleaned up. They need to be held to the highest standard.. ON AND OFF THE FIELD!
This is exactly way organizations like the "Postive Coaches Alliance" is making headway in changing the approach and the way the old school thinks!
The blog isn't going anywhere and I'm not taking these steps because anybody in management made me. The reason it's happening is because I can sense that teams/players/coaches feel as though if there's a thread started about something good they've done, it will soon degenerate into something bad. That's not what this site is about.
I've thought about the registration system, but I'm resisting it because I want people to keep their anonymity while showing some tact. I truly believe all of us can make our points without resorting to the three things I mentioned above.
You need to set up a registration system. If you verify each poster it could cut down on some of the negative posts. It is very easy to make comments when there is no chance of knowing who the person is. Aram, at least you would know who the person is. Also, have a way for a person to edit thier posts. Someone may post something negative. After cooling down and realizing thier mistake there is no way to adjust thier post.
I believe any parent would be very upset if someone was talking with such hate about thier child on a board. I would hold the person running the site responsible. I can understand the "Billy is not that good" or "I have seen better than Billy" but not the "Billy is a thug" or "Billy is an a-hole. There needs to be some lines not crossed. Teenagers have enough crap to deal with than reading all this nonsense about themselves on website.
I would hate to see this blog go away because it does add the extra coverage of the prep sports of the SGV. It makes for some great but also interesting conversation. BaseballResource.com is a good example of how a site can work really well.

Aram,
I know its disappointing to have to set these boundaries, but I applaud you and the Tribune for stepping up and doing what is right. Especially, in light of recent events in the media (Mr. Imus), it is important to set an ethical standard when others do not demonstrate the ability to do so on their own. As you stated, those who have issue with it can and should "move on". Congrats on the anniversary and I wish you many more and continued success.
Reel 'em in first and than set guidelines later...? It's unfortunate because this internet coverage could be an awesome thing. The blog generates interests too, but for anyone that has really played the game or coached, you saw what was coming and the problems along with it. I just hope it really does tone down. There has been some real animosity caused by this. Everyone has personal feelings towards others, but an open forum about high school sports with no filter was not a good idea. It's too late to pull back some of the personal attacks on kids and coaches that have taken place here. I guess we can only hope it stops with this new policy. I'll await to see if there is change.
