Tribune/Star-News All-Star Classic tomorrow at APU ...

| | Comments (41) |

Even Mike the Clone got moved by the Sonia Morales feature. But will he attend?

YOUR LAST CHANCE TO SEE THE TOP SGV HOOPSTERS IN THEIR SCHOOL COLORS

... And if that's not enough for you, the proceeds go to charity. I hope all of you decide to attend. This is a very fun event and the boys game is usually pretty intense and not your typical all-star game.

SURPRISE!: Tracy Murray, Cameron Murray and Brandon Lee will judge the dunk contest, according to game organizer Gordon "Boom Boom" Hamlow. I hope it's true.

GIRLS GAME: 5:30 P.M. (wink wink)
BOYS DUNK CONTEST: Following the girls game
BOYS GAME: 7:30 P.M. (wink wink)

Aram's predictions:
BOYS GAME: Tribune 102, Star-News 95 (Usual talk of a blowout notwithstanding).
GIRLS GAME: Tribune 97, Star-News 60 (Depending on traffic)
DUNK CONTEST: Jon Joe (I've just have to believe him when he says he has something coming)
BOYS 3-POINT CONTEST: Adam Malik, La Canada (Have you seen this kid play?)
GIRLS 3-POINT CONTEST: Ashley Paul, Glendora (Scary when hot)

Tony relax take it as a compliment. Either that or learn to deal with having a beautiful woman in your life. I have! 30 years and she still turms heads. Congrats on your success with the "lady" ...here's a tip.....women hate jealous men! It's a sign of insecurity and usually leads to agression towards the lady in question. So chill out and enjoy the ride.....Hey take it for what it's worth...after 30 years I might know a thing or two about the subject.

Don't believe me...rent "Raging Bull" and you'll see what I mean.

So you're the President Of The Nisha Gutierrez Fan Club huh? Wow, I didn't even know she had a fan club! Interesting. Well I do agree with one thing you mentioned. "Her stunning beauty." Yes, she is a beauty isn't she? Tell me Aram, have you ever met her? She has a warm smile and a soft voice. You are probably wondering who I am, aren't you? I'm Tony. I'm the Security Guard who made the sad mistake of falling in love with her...and you're the Prez? Please! T.

And yes Aram you are correct....NO AWARDS, ZERO are given at the Glendora BB Banquet

in the know said:

I have been to two Glendora Banquet LeDuc is a master...Its true...it doest matter if your the star player or a role player, He talks about each one and how they contributed to the team that year....Each player walks away feeling great! those of you who do not know LaDuc would be suprised that he is actually a pretty funny guy...and those of you who write about what they have heard?? are talking out of your AS* so go sit on the head and let your views flush down the toilet ....:)

Aram said:

I've never been. I've been to any team's banquet, actually. I've been invited, but I think it would be a conflict of interest. But just because I'm not there doesn't mean I'm not there, if you know what I mean.

Mike said:

Wow, Frank that's pretty cool and say's alot about what Le Duc brings to the table at "Bagpiper U".

And look at the prep sports scribe with the "clutch scoop" on what goes on at the "Bagpiper" hoops banquet.

Your amazing Tolegian

Late Guys!

Mike the Clone

Frank said:

Aram that was clutch....there you go!

Hard to imagine what people must have thought the first time he proposed that concept.

Coach Le Duc is a legend for all the right reasons.

Aram said:

From what I've heard, nobody gets an individual award at Glendora's banquet. Everyone is honored the same from leading scorer to last guy on the bench.

Joe Amat said:

Frank,

great question : )

I won't steal your thunder - so tell the story to everyone who believes that LeDuc promotes the "star system" and doesn't care about the "role players"

Mike said:

Frank my boy....sorry but the Clone is not in the loop when it comes to "Bagpiper" basketball.

But then again some will say I'm just looped!

Out!

Mike the Clone

Frank said:

Does anyone know who won what awards at the Glendora basketball banquet...trick question

Come on Mike you should know this one.

damienspartanfan,
to say that a powerhouse team, public OR private(naturally)has starters or hell even a full-roster of nothing but "hometown" talent is very much far from the truth. Even average programs have players from different zip codes.

One of the things ALL STAR games highlight, in my opinion, is the level of coaching/instruction of the players. Do they have a fundamental grasp of the game, can they dribble, can they play without the ball, can they play defense (zone vs. man to man). That's where the rubber hits the road for me. A great example of this was Kepple's Madrigal. He is not a great athlete but boy could he shot! He played within himself and was rarely exposed for his athletic limitations. That's a well coached player. Getting the most out of what God gave you and playing within yourself.

That's one of the things that stood out in the game ...how well coached the South Hills players were.
They knew the game. They played within themselves and handled themselves in a classy manner. Throw in their obvious will to win and play whatever role they could towards that end and you can see their coach covered all the bases well. South hills Jerry Santos and Damien Riley were team leaders and played prominent roles in the game.

I don't know where they'll play next year but maybe Aram you might. Thanks for a great game.

The only downers of the night:

Long "line" for the concession stand. 1 cashier?

Jon Joe losing the slam dunk contest! That was wrong. What does Tracy Murray know about dunks....he dunked 20 times in a 10 year Pro career! lol

Anyway....Jon Joe, Jerry Santos, Giffin Rahme, Damien Riley...thanks for the memories.

PSS..Willie Trimble destroys Munroe and would have put on a 'ssssssssssshhhhhhhhhoooooowwwwwwwww" !!!

Aram said:

If there was a person who had reason to be arrogant, it would be Coach LeDuc. And you know what, I don't think he's arrogant. I think it's a false perception. It's funny, I hear the same thing said about other SUCCESSFUL coaches in the area, but I don't find it to be the case at all with them.

I hope all of you realize what a hoops genius Coach LeDuc is.

If you saw last year's team win at El Toro, a team with a 7-footer, then you know how sharp he is. Or when Glendora beat Ventura in 2005. That Ventura was more talented, but Glendora beat them.

DamienSpartanFan said:

I'd be willing to bet money that you wear red and black around town and call yourself a Glendora fan when times are good... But thank you for collecting many of the dumb, inaccurate statements about LeDuc in one place.

"Leduc is anything but warm and cordial. Talk to any of his players that aren't "stars." He treats them as if they were irrelevant."

Actually, living in Glendora, I have known many of those players, and to a man, they admire Coach LeDuc, and feel very much of the Glendora basketball family.

"He is a GREAT basketball coach,"

There you go - the one thing you wrote I will agree with.

"but he is a power hungry driven man who has nothing to do with anyone that isn't involved in sports."

I don't know the man, so I can't comment here, but this seems like a pretty ridiculous statement. I hardly believe that someone as power hungry as LeDuc supposedly is would remain a high school coach his whole career.

"There are years where no one in the starting lineup is from the city of Glendora"

This is just wrong. Prove this. Name one year when this was true, and where the starters were from. This statement is just WRONG.

"and when he thinks they aren't going to have a big year, he takes a timely year off."

OK, I'll say it. You're an idiot. NO ONE thought Glendora was going to be up to their standards of the past; in fact LeDuc lost 10 games in a season for the first time in his career. If he was ever going to take a timely year off, this would've been the year. In fact, LeDuc took one year off in his career, Cameron Murray's junior year. Do you really think he took it off because he didn't think he could be successful? Get your facts straight.

I have the utmost respect for the coaches and players at Glendora. It's just some of the fans who are fools.

How good was Jerry Santos in the All Star game?

Frank Corona said:

I've meet Mr. Le Duc on several occassions. Living in the San Dimas/La Verne/Glendora area you tend to see the Le Ducs around town. His wife is my son's English teacher at Damien. She is an absolute joy in my son's life. Coach Le Duc has always been courteous and gracious with his time and sports opinions. I wonder how many times people stop him while he's out with his family to ask basketball questions. I've been guilty of this myself. And he always is very sincere and refreshingly honest. This year he may have done his best coaching in the four years I've seen him. Great family guy, great coach and a friendly manner off the court. That's what I see him as...that and a very proud father. You should see him around his daughter...he hangs on her every word...lol. The Le Ducs are a blessing to our community and that's what really matters. Basketball is a game....life is what matters! He get's it. How did Damien ever lose this guy?

Just to make sure everyone understands my last post was my personal opinion of the guy and not placed as a smear tactic, I like most have an opinion of everyone I meet be it positive or negative. We are all different and some are less friendly then others but that doesnt mean their bad people, just his personality I am sure.

Mr Clone,

Have you ever had contact with Leduc outside of a sports related enviroment? I have, met him a few years back by accident. I didnt know who he was until we introduced, he did seem to have a large ego from my impression. Dont misunderstand he is a fantastic coach but he seems to regard himself as superior, when we met I didnt even follow high school sports let alone basketball at Glendora so my opinion is unbiased.
From my personal perspective he is a cold fish and sees others as less than equal, hey its just what I walked away with after running into him so I thought I would share...

Aram,

I really enjoyed the first half of the girl's game on Saturday. I didn't care for the "superstar" girls who came late. I felt like once they got to the game, the appreciation for the game went out the window. They were goofing around the entire time. Acting like they were so much better than the other players. It's really disappointing. I can remember when the boys game was the only attraction. Now girls think they are so big time that they dont have to try hard in an all star game? Girls check yourself, if you were that good your game would have been second, not first and you should be grateful you have the talent not taking it for granted.

Mike said:

Boy do I like the sound of this...

"Arrogant, snobby towns that everyone likes to beat"

Sounds like "winners" and not "whiners" to me. And nothing wrong with being one of the teams that everyone wants too beat. I like it!

Oh and “Anonymous” that thing you mistake for Coach Le Duc’s ego, that’s called a winning attitude.

On a personal note I should have went to the game Saturday night because I took a beating on the Palmer course at La Quinta PGA West on Saturday. But seriously if any of you ever get a chance to play on a course like that, you got to do it. It was brutal and at $115.00 pretty expensive but well worth it.

Out!

Talk about two whiny schools. Damien and Glendora complaining about each other is like Tony Soprano telling Rick Majerus he's too fat. Get over it. You're both arrogant, snobby towns that everyone likes to beat. Le Duc is the one common between both of them and we all know what an ego maniac he is.

is there a new west covina coach?

Aram said:

The player rotations were fine and classless is the last thing that Coach Dunn is. Don't mess up a good event and a fun time for everyone by coming with this crap. Take a look at the box score, everybody did something.

Anonymous said:

Ok Damien fan...your not still mad that we beat you at the end of the year when it counted...on your court!!! I guess it still hurts....I understand your anger....:)

DamienSpartanFan said:

Typical Glendora whining, when everything doesn't go exectly like you want it to and the rest of us don't bow down to worship Glendora basketball. Like it's some crime for the Damien kids (whose team had a better record than yours this year, by the way) to be on the floor at the same time. Were you timing how long Kyle was in the game as opposed to Justin? What was the difference in times? Here's the great thing about all-star games: everyone plays, about the same as everyone else. It wasn't any different here.

Lack of class? Next time you want to see and hear a lack of class, turn around and look at your fellow Glendora fans. The things your adult fans say astonish me at times. Come on, glendora fan, time to quit whining.

glendora fan said:

I noticed that the kid from Glendora started the game but in the second half got benched and lost his starting spot to the other Damien allstar .....So the two Damien kids were on the floor at the same time....GEEEEEE you think the Damien allstar coach had something to do with that? Talk about politics...coach I think you have no class! FYI Did you know that the kid from Glendora was the only player to repeat 1st team selection two years in a row!! He did not deserve to lose his starting position and receive less playing time than the Damien player just because the coach was from Damien...as I said before..you have NO CLASS..

Anonymous said:

But Joe should have won the slam-dunk, what's up with that!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said:

Hey Aram, only one of your predictions were right, and that was nothing to brag about because the girls barely won, not by the 30-something you predicted.

SoCalVoice said:

Aram,
Regardless of how the game turns out, I want to thank you for the great article on Griffin Ramme a few days ago. Griffin's story is an inspiring one, and you told it well. I've had the privilege of getting to know him over the past couple of years and I can attest to the fact that he's an outstanding young man, a gritty competitor, and a well-respected team leader. I hope that the Tribune will continue to present the stories of student-athletes who may not be future pro athletes but are shining examples to their peers and to the community at large.

Mikey if she does that makes two of us! lol

So I get to meet Mike the Clone ....finally. You better not be 5'6" 320...lol

Best of luck with that kilt...please stay near the floor seats!
lol

Mike said:

Now, Now, Aram as I am the self proclaimed "President of the Nisha Gutierrez Fan Club" I must say that the "kilt" would be a site to see with these bad knees of mine.

But Nisha with her stunning beauty truly would be the site to behold.

(She must think I'm the biggest wierdo)

It's all in fun Nisha!

Late!

Aram said:

Yeah, I don't know which would be more impressive. Probably the kilt.
