ANSWERS: Los Altos vs. Bishop Amat (Ahh, the beauty of blogs) ...
I guess it's just part of my job to be able to get ahold of coaches at the push of a button. Here's what they said ...
Mark Verti, Bishop Amat
Why don't you play Los Altos?: "I don't know. I'm not sure."
Can you understand why fans would want to see it?: "I can understand why, it's two local schools with local fans. It's two schools with good tradition. It just hasn't happened. If we played Los Altos every year, I don't think it would be a big deal. It's just that we haven't played in the past and people want to see it. They're a great program. It makes sense, but it hasn't happened."
Would you consider playing Los Altos in the future?:" I never say never on anything. We sign two-year contracts with schools. When they're up, we sign with new schools."
Greg Gano, Los Altos
Why don't you play Bishop Amat?: "I don't know, that's a good question. I've never talked to Coach Verti about playing. Coach DiFiori called one year and our matchups didn't matchup. It's never been that they pursued us or we pursued them."
Can you understand why fans would want to see it?: "They (fans) would want to see it. They're (Amat) still the premier school in the Valley. Who's ever denied that? We have a lot of respect for those guys."
Would you consider playing them in the future?: "If it worked out on our schedule, we wouldn't duck them and they wouldn't duck us either."
Aram Tolegian, SGVTribune.com
I want to thank both coaches for answering these questions. And I want everyone on here to appreciate both coaches for playing along and being honest. It's an interesting proposition to be sure. I think both coaches kind of agree that fans are making a bigger deal out of this than what there really is. But then again, that's what we are - fans. That's what fans do. And I think that both coaches understand that.

McBride is a one way player due to his medical condition. Los Altos coaches should know that they can't use him on both sides of the ball.
righteousness and Ha,
You guys are real twits. Your team lost everyone that matters and will be playing with a "one man show" this season and will most likely find themselves at the bottom of the sierra league.
Plaid Lad is absolutely correct with Glendora. Unless every team in the sierra league has greatly improved their offense this season (what a joke), it will be extremley tough to do well against this experienced D which had an incredible year.
speaking of all star games...the san gabriel valley senior softball all star game is back on at mt. sac. the game will be limited to the san gabriel valley, north of the 10 and south of the 10. it will be played wed, june 6 at mt. sac, 6pm.
justcuz,
let me tell you a little story. . . .
Coach John Barnes of LOS ALamitos(public school) was made an offer of $100,00 from Servite(private/catholic)to coach their football team. Barnes as I believe the story goes, had "a change of heart".
Coach Barnes turned down $100,000. Not to say that LOS AL countered that offer, that is irrelevant, what is relevant is to say, he couldn't possibly be making SCHOOL DISTRICT money, to turn down six figures.
You see JUSTCUZ, football programs operate much like a non-profit organization, only they have the DISTRICT money as a "safety net". The districts themselves run similar to non-profits, they need donors, backers, philantropists.
Where does the school district money come from?
Do they sell hamburgers, thus making a profit which enables them to pay thier rent, and salaries? NO! That is GRANT money.
Charities DON'T donate to other charities.
Besides do you know who relies on DISTRICT money to fund thier programs?
Workman, Bassett, La Puente, etc. Besides the public school system is strapped for cash, do you really think any of them can afford to spend $100,000 on a FOOTBALL coaches' salary? Much less on something that doesn't necessarily pertain to academics, or to the broader student body. I mean we are talking numbers here, Football program/General student body= 150/2,500 ratio, at least.
Contenders have STRONG backing. How do you think they stay contenders? Ask LB Poly. Must be nice to have a mile long NFL alumni list, who have NFL money to contribute.
glendora?
why are u guys even in this blog yet in any blog
all of ur teams this year were weak
"oh next year all of our defense is coming back"
wow call me when u take 1st in league in any sport in the next decade
Plaid lad,
You're forgetting one thing.. Glendora isn't any good. Winning and Football aren't in the same sentence once league comes around. Haha
GLENDORA- will display a stellar defense this year with the return of Horn, Niles, C.Young, R.Young, Kovar, Beckwith, Nichols, and Meraz leading the way. The Sierra League will see the strengths of certain teams shine and others fall to the wasteside. It's the nature of the beast year in and out. Chino road the high roads for many years and before Chino Hills open their doors for business. Before that it was Ayala and even Claremont and Upland in the ol'Baseline League. ...Heck, when Damien finally figured out that Dick Larson wasted more football talent then he ever deserved to have, they even patched out a few league Championships of thier own. Throughout Glendora has always been that perennial middle league team that won the games expected of them and lost those that just fell short of turning the tides in thier favor. My guess is that this year GHS will ride the big wave and prove to those in doubt that they don't need JE to score and win one for Pasqy and Company. Ground pounders on O....five grinding yards that no one will be able stop in a cloud of dust. Call the AQMD to get a breath of fresh air.
OLU vs AMAT that is a must see game. this be a great game to measure how good both teams are. But we cant look ahead to OLU when you have in week "0" Los Osos is very good team that has great demographic of Athletes that could play football. I really hope that no one at Amat players and coaches look past a Los Osos team that beat Rancho Cucamonga, a team in which Amat Also plays. Amat needs to literally take it week by week with the propose schedule they have. They have no freebes this year, each team they play is competitive and plays football. Los Osos first then OLU. Remember Amat has to win against a good Los Osos team before OLU. Lancers step by step represent your school and the SGV. We believe in you. But remember think about it, before just jumping into it.
Bill, i have to disagree, if you watch enough baseball you could determine who would be the mvp or best player out there, Olivares a great player and pitcher, he also surrounded by more talent then De la Fuente whom i have seen plenty. Because of this i would problaby give Dela the edge.

Plaid Lad that's what Mike has been saying all along about JE.
Being a homer at Bagpiper U I've become critical of the player preformances which each of you blog about from time to time. Regarding who's the best running back in SGV. Hey, forget about last years numbers, it's behind you. Many of our local teams have lost plenty of talent to question this years abilities and productivity. So, who will carry the number one banner for SGV this year?...well, go ask your Quiggy-board for that answer. Regarding, J. Edmonds and his senior performance last year...he was fun to watch. But given that, he still needs to improve on his football experience and abilities. More snap time at the next level (JC??? Citrus, Mt Sac) will give him what he is lacking...By improving on his running read of the open field will make him a better player. Needless, to say he also needs to bulk up by spending more time in the weight room for the sake of delivering the hit opposed to just taking it. Improved strength, improved read of the field, and improved speed, might get him a look at maybe a small D-1 school. GHS will miss him just like we miss each graduating class, but like clock-work we will pick up the pieces and begin a new year just like everyone else in SGV.
jeffrulerson,
Will let you know as I learn more. I do know, before the end of last season, Jordan was looking closely at 2 offers. Jordan is a very private guy and doesn't get caught up in all the hesteria. He is a really good kid with outstanding grades.
Where is Jordan Edmond getting offers to play football?
Edmonds has 4 college offers. He will not be playing at citrus with mendrum and eschardies. He hasn't chosen yet.
aram u promised a top 10 this week. so where is it?
I think what a lot of you should remember about Jordan Edmond is that he was relatively new to the game. Last year was his first full season and he did great!
I came down to this quiet office to get some work done and I get distracted by this damn blog..thanks a lot you guys!
Have a great rest of the weekend you guys and I'd like to hear more about those guys going to Citrus. That's a "coup" for Citrus if that is true.
I AM OUT!
Mike the Clone A.K.A The Nut Case
Prime,
I don't have a handle on anything at "bagpiper U"
DHS hey now there is a scope, can you confirm that info about those three going to Citrus.
Feeling you Tartan brick my brother!
Out!
Mike the Clone
and no I'm not DHS either
yeah mike you dopey clone you are a dope but i crack up at everything you write. feel the love clone
I usually can't stand Glendora, but it should be nice next year to see our boys Mendrun and Eschardies to be on the same side of the ball with Edmonds over at Citrus..not to mention Michael Johnson from CO. They are gonna put up some serious points!
Anonymous you’re right I did lower myself to name-calling. I guess I'm the dope with egg on my face!
That was the only correct fact that you stated in your otherwise brilliant observation.
Well other than..my ex would call me a nut case, your not my ex are you anonymous?
I'm flattered your using my "gloss" too, obviously I make and impression on you to remember "myopic"
(laughing)

"Wonder why Edmonds is not D1?" Name me two backs from local SGV area that went D1 this season? Pretty tough uh? If you are going to make D1 comments, do your homework.
All schools have some stud shoes to fill. Not just Glendora. Lets see how Damien, Covina and others fair this season. The better question will be, not how glendora will score without Edmonds, but how will all the other Sierra league schools score against glendora's defense this season.
mike,
you are a real nut case. you claim everyone of your critics use name calling to make a point. READ THE POSTS UP TO YOUR COMMENTS. The only name calling "Bone Head", "Dopey Guy" and "Dope" are from YOU! GET A LIFE!
and, mike, when are you going to stop talking with yourself? Prime, come on mike! I'm not being MYOPIC am I mr. crook?
Dan,
Following the 2003 season, the LA Times did a special piece called the "high school BCS." Los Altos was No. 2 in the Times BCS rankings, behind Westlake. I believe they were also Top 5 in the Times rankings. What I said was not a stretch. That LA team could play with and beat almost anybody in SoCal that year.
MClone
You seem to have a good handle on Glendora Sports and speak the truth..
One thing they better get a handle on, is the baseball program over there. Pretty sad situation with the talent that comes out of Glendora. Bob Knight coaching tactics dosen't seem to be working over there!
Prime,
I know that but ya know I'm stupid!
That's the best the button wearers have is name calling. They can't state facts they just react emotionally like a bunch of "Chris's". This dopey guy did his homework yeah right. I posted my comment at 11:27 and this "Chris" comes back at 11:35 and say's he's done his homework.
His new name is Genius ...frecking Genius.
Oh well I like sparring with these dopes!

knockout to Mike again.schooling think.
that was weak
Mike,
No my friend..when you stated that Edmonds was just a "good" running back, you set the bar for everyone else. Don't try and type your way out of your statement as you ALWAYS try to do after you say something stupid. Oh yea, don't be looking for your Amat boys to always back your stupid statements. Personally, I think Barbone is an excellent back, but my nod, if I could only select one for a combo team would be Edmonds. Wish I could have both.
Homework has been done Mike. I have review your postings carefully since you first became Mike the Clone. No "chris" here!
Mike the Clone
Your right again along with Mat and Amat rules
Wonder why Edmonds isn't D1? You need to present a complete package!
Glendora fans better start asking the questions on how to score points next year with Edmonds gone!
Give it some thought,
HUH? Let me point out favoritism.
You are correct my friend; “The Franchise” had an incredible year. (< Favoritism) I have never taken anything away from Jordan. I just have made some observations so don’t go bloviating and putting words in my mouth. You may think Barbone is average you said that not me my friend.
The key to Jordan’s success had two dynamics too it. One, being the O-Line identifying assignments and blocking down. (< Favoritism towards O-Line) Two, Jordan being so fast off the ball and getting to the outside that when and if he got outside he was gone. (<Favoritism towards Edmond) You contain him inside and he is limited to the small gains. (Redlands, Capo Valley) He just didn’t have the strength to bowl people over. Like Barbone or that kid from Rowland. (< Not Favoritism)
Give me a break bone head…of course Jordan was our “franchise” and did an incredible job for us. (< Favoritism) But with that said give me Barbones strength on a Jordan frame and I can only imagine how many D1 coaches would me knocking down the Edmond front door. (< Observation)
I sure guys like MATMTWBAG, Joe Amat and Bluorca knew what I was talking about.
Oh and your back handed slap at me about “Crookie” just proves my point that you have no clue about of which you speak…go back do your homework. All along this past season and in my posts I said stick with one QB or another. Whether it was Crook or the “Kaluuuz” it didn’t matter to me just stick with one or the other and give them half a chance.
And having spoken to both of them at the same time, both agreed it was tough platooning but each guy had a common goal and that was to see either succeed and pull for each other.
Oh and by the way with one more year to go now, Kaluuuz is my guy, (< Favoritism) he's got some varsity snaps under his belt just hope he doesn't get jerked around.
No worries my friend, I’m used to little snipes from “Chris’s” like you. Actually it gives me a chance to come back and expose weaknesses to your argument. Start thinking with your head and not your heart.
Thanks!
Mike the Clone
The Orange Lutheran team of 2003 was an excellent team and was close in caliber to last year's Aron Corp team, in my opinion it was the 2nd best team that O.Lu has had, with last year's team being their best.
Their closest game that year up until their loss to Los Altos in the title game was a 35 to 14 win over Mater Dei, other than that they blew away everone else that year. I'm not a Los Altos fan
but I saw the title game at the home depot center
and both teams were extremely talented with great plays made throughuot the game by both teams. If I remember right O,Lu's QB was a kid named Seth Blackmoore, I remember he threw a touchdown pass that was at least 65 to 70 yards in the air, it was probably the most exciting & well played title game that I ever saw and I've seen a few.
Just cause O,Lu. lost to an excellent Los Altos team that year doesn't mean they were in their up and coming years like some of you are insisting,
both of those teams were excellent teams in 2003 and could play with the D1 caliber teams that year, but I have to disagree with Aram cause niether one of those teams were the top team in the Southern Section, cause WestLake had an excellent team that year beating SO.Notre Dame, Hart, & St. Bonnies in the same season, and I believe they finishen #2 in the nation that year. Also J.W.North had a phenominal team that year with blowout wins over every team they played that year, including Mater Dei, Kaiser, Corona Centennial,& Norco. Then you also had the Hart's & Mission Viejo's to consider, I would put 2003 Los Altos in the top 10 that year & maybe they could have squeezed in at #5 in the southern section, but thats a big maybe.
Both runners are exciting football players. Its funny how some people think the SGV is watered down.
Seen both Barbone and Edmonds play and Edmonds was pretty good for being a one man gang. Barbone gets a nod for his two way performance but Edmonds gets the nod because that's ALL Glendora had.
"Anti Amat,
THere was not a snowballs chance in hell last year that UCLA would beat SC........UUUUUUUHHHHHHH..DUMBSH-- look what happen."
Bag boy - first of all it is "look what happened", not "look what happen".
On top of that, is that the best you could come back with? That was weak....just like your team will be.
Mat and Amat Rules
You guys are probably right with the Barbone kid! Looking to the future!
The stats are very close with with 10 games vs 11, but the big thing I see is a sophomore buck being compared to a Senior!
Edmonds is Premier
Don't get me wrong! I saw Edmonds last year many times, but feel at 15 years old Nico Barbone talent and upside potential is unbelievable. He is one strong, fast smart football player! Goes both ways also.
His size is why I put him in front of Edmonds right now! Wait till this young man is a Senior. Maybe someone can bring him our way behind our line!!! YEAH!!
Mike the Clone,
If you think Edmonds is just a GOOD high school back, then that would make Barbone AVERAGE. The comment to MATMTWTBAG was that he mentioned Barbone for a SGV combined team with no mention of Edmonds. While Barbone had an excelent year, I believe Edmonds had an incredible year.
But of course, when it comes to YOUR bagpipers, you can't show much favoritism except to YOUR QB Crook...right Mike?
Coach Spoon on D AND Pernell Taylor on RBs...
Anyone know if Wagner is starting?
I have been spelling this kids name wrong...Oops...
He even has his own website, hard to fathom...
http://www.aaroncorp.org/
AnyMouse...
Somebody save me from doing some research, what date is the Amat vs OL game?
I need to circle my calender...
AnyMouse...
Wasteland,
I for one will be in Amats corner that evening even though my kids are in the public school system by choice, Amat is still "Our" team geographically and we should all pull together for the SGV teams...
AnyMouse...
Amat fans stand by. Coach Spoon is coming to Varsity and every player from Amat knows what he brings to the table. With Spoon teaching on defense, players like Austin, Silva, and the entire D-Line will be taught the proper way to attack.
MattsBag
Grow up.
Everbody's allowed to express their opinion. Try expressing yours without the attitude. Let's try to keep this from degrading into a baseball blog...
Anti Amat,
THere was not a snowballs chance in hell last year that UCLA would beat SC........UUUUUUUHHHHHHH..DUMBSH-- look what happen.
OLu is not an overnight success. They have slowly been building their program up over the years starting with D13 and working their way to D1.
While they did lose Corp, Readorn and Pettis, they are still loaded. That being said this could be a transition yer for them as thye lost both their OC and DC to a school in Colorado. I anticipate them running the ball a lot this year with the Pemasa kid and cousin getting the bulk of the carries.
Can Amat beat them? Sure they could. Will they beat them? Not a snoflakes chance in hell.
Jordan Edmond is a GOOD high school back, but if he wants to get to the next level he will have to bulk up.... Premiere that's pushing it.
And that's not knocking what the "franchise" accomplished either. There is alot of raw talent loaded inside that kid.my hunch is that he will play JC ball (if he wants to keep playing) get some looks and probably end up at a small D1 or smaller school.
But again the desire must be there and he must be willing to bulk up and spend the time in the weight room.
He is just a great kid and a true gentleman and I wish him the best.
Late!
Mike the Clone
Wasteland,
It did not take long for that Amat hate to come out.........But we will take your money and you can come and root against us...
Considering that most SGV (public school) fans don't consider amat as one of their own, I'll bet they'll be pulling for OL to win. They may be OC, but amat has bred too many local haters over the years.
If Amat starts off with a 0 week win at home vs Los Osos then that Oluth game will be a bigger build up....does Oluth play week zero?......Yes SGV will go nuts if Amat takes down Oluth and it is not as out of reach as people think it is...Oluth lost Corp and the next in line QB is good, but can he honestly be as good as Corp. Should make for a intresting matchup....wonder how many LA fans will be at the Amat game instead of their own?
This Valley would go crazy if Amat beat OLu. Yowza!
Our (SGV) schools can't afford to pay an established coach what he's worth, or keep an up, and comer from leaving, once he's made a name for himself.
The lesson to be learned is, only religious schools can make these kind of impressive advances, because they have a much larger base of players to "recruit" from (especially in the OC).
Aaron Korp was Orange Lutherans starting QB in 05-06 and 06-07, I believe he going to USC this coming year...
So yes, he is good...
AnyMouse...
WHO?,
Aron Corp is going to be The next great QB that USC produces.......after Mission Viejo Mark Sanchez is done at USC , Aron Corp will be next in line.....I am sure O Luth. did not drop off much in talent and their coaching is top of the line......Amat and Oluth is a game that will sell out......get there early.........
Not to take anything away from OL but if I remember correctly beating Mater Dei that year was unexpected and considered a major upset, the people I know went nuts after that win.
Does anyone know what year coach Kunau took over the OL program? I think he was the catalyst for the emergence of OL and the boosters love that guy, too bad he didnt come to the SGV.
I am just curious and think they have a trend setting program that underwent a major turnaround in a very short period of time, could be some good lessons for our local schools.
AnyMouse...
who is Aaron Korp and is he any good...
AnyMouse:
Lutheran beat Mater Dei 35-7 in 2003. So I guess it depends on what you call a "breakout" year.
Anti17,
Orange Lutherans breakout year was 04-05 I believe, Aaron Korp was a sophmore back up to another solid QB that year and things rolled from there. Prior to that the people I know who are OL alum did not seem to think much of the program, I am going from memory and could be mistaken so if you have some history prior to the season mentioned please share.
AnyMouse...
bluorca,
First of all I never said that Los Altos would out recruit amat. I said it would affect Los Altos and amat's recruiting.
I found that Los Altos has played Bishop two times in the 80's. In 84' Bishop won 14-0 and in 85 Bishop won 33-6. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH.....
Bluorca and anymouse,
are u kidding me, saying OLU barely jumped on the football map. When LA beat them a few years back, that was their sixth title appearance. they had lost four to St Bonnie and one to rio hondo prep in the early 90's i think. You guys are way off base, try again! and lsoing to a powerhouse like st Bonnie isnt exactly something to be ashamed off, since most of those years were the lorenzo booker years. OLU hasnt just jumped on the map...theyve been here, so when LA beat them, that was a significant victory.
see ya....
JORDON "THE FRANCHISE" EDMONDS WAS A PREMIER RUNNING BACK. HE WAS THE SIERRA LEAGUE LEADING RUSHER. CONSIDERING EDMONDS BARELY PLAYED FOOTBALL IN HIS JR YEAR AND NOT AT ALL PREVIOUSLY, MAKES HIS GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND STATS EVEN MORE INCREDIBLE.
Amat Rules
Are you crazy! Barbone over Edmonds? Many will argue that pick. No discredit to Barbone, who I would consider a great running back, but you obviously had no opportunity to see Edmonds or read any of the many postings throughout the season or review any stats. Edmonds was a PREMEIR running back... I don't think anyone else would argue that.
To be honest who really cares who is the top ten during spring practice(West Covina last seasons spring #1)...Ask any coach spring practice in this state is a joke...you dont get to wear pads so you really dont get to see how close or far away your team is...In states like Texas they get to pad it up during Spring...which lets those coachs get a better feel for their team. Almost every coach i talk to would rather be able to pad it up during and spring and then not have summer-camp, then go through spring with no pads and summer with no pads.
ARAM
I thought your Spring top ten was coming out this week!
Please post by Monday,,, We start next week..
Edmonds is not a PREMIER running back. Lacks size and I would agree with MAT all the way.
Blu,
Had to back your statement about OL, they werent even on the map until recently. I know some of the boosters from there and the cash flows freely but even then they made an unbelieveable turnaround, the coach at OL is a genius...
AnyMouse...
Aram,
When are the TOP 10 pre-season being announced? I thought you mentioned they would be announced this week.
Im not buying that HH fan...
Amat is not the only good (even historically at least) Pac-5 team that Los Altos could schedule right? Or how about at least a good Div 2 team? What is your excuse there?
It is impossible that LA could ever out recruit Amat because Amat is a private parochial. If you don't believe me, compare the number of players that have gone to play D-1 football or even the NFL....Amat has over 2x as many players as LA regardless of LA's numerous Div. 6 championships. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH.....
The Orange Lutheran of today was only up and coming when LA faced them a few years back. The OL of today is a massive football farm because of the amount of money that has been thrown into that program within the last 3 years. I would encourage you and any other to research OC football and how it as a whole as dramatically increased both in power and quality players. The OL of today would rock LA over and over again.
If Amat was afraid of OL, the last thing Verti would do would be to schedule them....Making dumbass comments claiming that Amat is "afraid" to play anyone, including OL, will not erase the fact that LA has proven to be chickenchit when it comes to scheduling anyone of value.
Despain never beat Amat btw. He also was quoted as saying that Amat played and hit harder than any high school he had ever faced and because of that, he refused to schedule Amat because of the injuries to his team he had suffered the last time they faced Amat. Of course, things are different now but perhaps Gano hears those whispers from the past...
Who are we kidding we all know Verti and Gano are very aware of the amat vs. Los Altos issue. They both have too much to lose if the game goes the wrong way. The only way amat can come out a head is to win big. Los Altos wins or the game is close then amat is in trouble (lose to a D6 school), then they have a recruiting nightmare on their hands. If Los Altos loses big then they have a recruiting nightmare on their hands. Both coaches don’t have the ba**s to man up and schedule the game. I have lived in Hacienda Heights since the 60's and I will say this much in the 70’s, & 80’s Despain backed down to no one including amat. Gano bottom line the only way your kids are going to get better is play the tuff teams learn from it and move on. We beat OL just three years ago, now they are D1 and amat is afraid of them.
MATMTWTBAG,
You mention several good players, but leave out the PREMIER running back of SGV. I would take Edmonds of Glendora on my combined team over any other running back. How would you argue that choice?
Water Down...You definitely don't know what your talking about..I have been watching Damien play all year, last year.Travis has 3 combine 40-4.6 times. I know his dad and he told me he had hamstring problems 2 years ago when he ran that 5.17..Check the Santiagofootball web site.
40-4.6
vert 35.6
shuttle time 4.3
his vert got him 3rd pl. finish in combine.
Los Altos v.s Amat
bring it!
Hey umm i dont think you would put WC with SH one different districts..two WC was already combined once...they were combined with Edgewood back in 88 i think...but the some of the others should happen
Hey, I know this isn't news from LA or Amat but I just read on another website (Mid Valley News- I think)that Mooney at Temple City resigned. Wow talk about out of the blue! When did this happen? Who's replacing him? Anybody on his staff ready? Are they a weekly?
Water Down
You need to further research your stats. Look up Austin on Scout.com/LA Combine scores. Looks like he improved his scores:
40: 4.9
Shuttle: 4.4
Not bad for a Lineman. The website indicated he received an offer from Arizona.
Jeremy,
The money comes from the district. How else were those new fields built?
First off that Amat website for football is impressive. The talk of bulking up one school with the talent is not far fetched but it would have to be border schools..WC with SH...LA with Wilson, D'bar with Walnut, Bassett and LP. Baldwin Park with Sierra Vista, Covina and Nothview / Gladstone, San Dimas and Bonita. Bishop Amat is a pay to go there school so this favors the private...or all of the above if they have the funds or Amat loosens the entry fee with scholorships can get from any of the above and reall built a power house...........Kids nowadays stick to their home town school and parents only want to drive them a short distance to school or have them walk there. Do you blame them with cost of living these days not to mention gas prices shooting thru the roof...even with border schools as close as they are parents do not want to hassle with it especially to promote one schools football team over the other..but the idea would be nice but it is not going to happen....A amat team last year with Barbone SD, Longoria LA, MCd Cov.,Harris BP, Mendrum Damien, Gonzales Rosemead plus the other SGV studs from as far as Duarte and Monrovia and you have a team that would whack the OC and Snata Clarita........Still not going to happen...good thought but what does that do to the other schools you deplete as well as destroy during the regular season.......?
DR didn't beat those teams, but are going in the right direction. Schools can have a good season, but it takes a program to be successful over a long period of time. Bishop Amat is a program with a few recent sub-par seasons, but still needs to be recognized as a program because of the duration of success. A program is not built overnight, but begins with small building blocks in the right place. DR could have the right blocks... time will tell.
justcuz,
No fans/no interest
No interest/no boosters/no money
No money/no football program
None of the above/NO TOP PROSTPECTS!!
No TOP prospects, you are BASSETT, or BOSCO TECH!
Would you like to continue life as the big LA, or the golden A?
then you need to appease your audience.
You are right, ON THE FIELD you do not "play for" the fans, not conciously, but when you are running a program, that requires money.
Where does that money come from??
Diamond Ranch? Common now...
Diamond Ranch may have had the balls to play some big time programs but they were destroyed by all of those programs...these games were not even close guys. They also got worked over by Chino Hills not to mentioned losing to Charter Oak who lost to Glendora and Bonita....BONITA LOST TO WALNUT!
In 2005, DR went 2-8 losing to every SGV team it faced.
In 2004, DR went an impressive 9-2 with a semi-final appearance in CIF and ALSO barely lost to a Servite team by only 2 points!...Impressive right? Kinda..but not really. This Servite team went 2-8 on the season and got annilhated by Amat 34-14 that year.
Diamond Ranch may have surprised Los Altos last season, but she is far from being anything more than a typical SGV high school.
DR is a very talented team, with a great demographic of atheletes that come in and really do some damage. I could only hope a team as talented as the one that passed through DR step up to the high level of consistancy to truly make it a powerhouse school. They play a preseason level of competition that is one of the toughest in the state. But to be considered a powerhouse, you cant just play those teams, but you need to beat those teams. Does DR have that talent to comepete? The answer : yes they do! I respect DR for taking these challenges, and I'll be pulling for them to succeed. I know they had quite a few coaches pass through that school, in such a short time. I only hope that these good coaches stay (or are allowed to stay) to develop these young men. Let's go SGV!
Diamond Ranch will play the best and did not pick up Amat? Exactly! The best now not a few years ago. I heard both schools looked into facing off. The schedule is open for DR next year, so we will see if they continue to play top teams. Scheduling reasons did not allow for Amat and DR to face off this year. DR scheduled a Chrisitan High School from San Diego who was a CIF champ in there area.
Aram what's the 411 on Bassett?
SGV is Watered Down
Just one person's opinion!

NOW THATS WHAT I'M TALKIN ABOUT!!!
WHOEVER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS WEBSITE....GREAT JOB!!!!! KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK!!! THE SITE LOOKS AWESOME!!!!
Some ideas....
~More photos from past great players or past great games!
~Scanned newspaper headlines from big games from the Tribune/Herald Examiner....Our history is our pride.
~Quotes from past players that made it big about what they remember about playing at Amat.
~Short bios on current players and/or coaches.
THIS WEBSITE WILL BE AMAT'S MAIN RECRUITING TOOL...AGAIN IT LOOKS GREAT!!! GOOD LUCK!
Diamond Ranch
Give me a break. What talent? No team speed. Lost their best back!
Funny but Diamond Ranch, who wants to play the best, did not schedule Bishop Amat or Damien. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Read the Nike Camp scores
Bishop Amat's Dominque Austin 40 time: 5.17
Damien's Travis Echardaises 40 time: 5.17
Austin 6'4" 245 Offensive Line
Travis 6'2" 190 Wide Receiver
Somewhere in those numbers is all you need to know about football in the SGV and the difference between Division I talent and Division I BS.
Damien's Harper numbers were sick. Where is he taking his 4.34 40 time and 20+ 185 bench presses to...USC.
San Gabriel Valley is watered down. Diamond Ranch will get ALL the talent in coaching, players and staff. They will continue to play the best, take their beatings and then watch out! Amat that could have been you but the best part is Diamond Ranch is FREEE!!!!!!Good luck and may the best team win.

Don't know if it is all updated yet and it is all correct, but there is one!!!
Field the best players from the SGV and see what you have Jeremy.
The best 3 linebackers in the SGV?
The best 3 receivers in the SGV?
The best 3 QBs in the SGV?
The best 3 O-Linemen in the SGV?
The best 3 D-Linemen in the SGV?
The best 3 DBs in the SGV?
That team doesn't beat Notre Dame. That team doesn't beat Norco. That team doesn't compete with Oaks Christian.
Look at top 100 Cal Football rated players...
Serra has (3) # 6, # 12, #16
Verbum Dei has (3) #24, #38, #74
SGV ...zero. Which means Amat had zero. Was Austin ALL CIF? His bio reads All League and Honorable mention ALL State? Did he make ALL CIF? How could that be? Is that the Amat machine at work again?
Layton and Sermons both played in Diamond Bar Pop Warner as children. Rodney Sermons is a great Pop Warner coach who is feeding the DR program. Most of Layton's players these next few years received coaching from Sermon's in Pop Warner. Rumor is Layton and Sermons are already working deals to get him on Staff. Add Mcuthchen and Sermons to Layton's staff and you got the new Bishop Amat of the Valley. It will take time (Traditionally there is no one better than Amat), because they are a new program, but they are going in the right direction.
Expect DR to be the new Diamond Bar HS of the 90's. New facilities, a blue Ribbon school again, a coach who has a lot of coneections in Diamond Bar and Pomona, college connections, staff of former NFL/Division one players and a Pat Hill attitude of playing the best to be the best. All the talk about Sermons and Mcutchen caoching at Amat? Layton went to USC with both and the younger Sermons is already on campus. Expect Mcutchen to be the D-coordinator at DR before Amat.
Aram,
that is EXACTLY what I have been saying! Where were you when blogger FRANK came down on me for saying exactly that? Getting the BEST talent on ONE or TWO campuses. I said three or four. But two would be better. I talked about comparative talent base, geography, size, OC, Santa Clarita Valley, etc. Our talent base is way too spread out.
Aram,
what do you think?
Now this is my opinion:
Barbone at San Dimas?! How about Damien or Charter Oak?
Harris at B.P.?! How about at LA, or BA?
McD at Covina?! How about SH?
Gilmore at Wilson?! Los Altos.
. . . . it goes on.
Blue,
We need Amat back in a major way. Bring back McCutcheon. Bring back whomever. Get the dollars out for financial aid. Amat is only SGV team who can get us National recognition, even true state recognition. I know Aram likes to point to the LA team a few years ago as the best in SoCal (Aram is a great local supporter for our teams) but I don't know how he can make that statement with teams like Mission Viejo, Hart and LB Poly also in SoCal. Amat, on the other hand, used to beat all those teams. The caveat, though, is that those were very different Amat teams.
My argument with Dominguez is that they are a battle-tested team, having beaten SO ND the year before and then having repeated last year. Amat beat Loyola, which is a team the Lancers are very familiar with from playing every year. No surprises. That is not as impressive as beating an unfamiliar powerhouse.
Bishop Amat:
No QB
NO RB
No Mas
New York
Amat vs. Dominguez game would have been a good one. Dominguez did lose to Loyola 14-10 and Amat beat Loyola by 3...and they beat the pesky Cubs without standout Dorian Wells who missed the ND and Loyola games. And granted, Dominguez did indeed beat Carson who had defeated Amat but anyone who went to the Carson/Amat game will tell you that Amat should have won that game. Both Amat and Dominguez beat Chaminade in very close games.
So yeah, in my eyes, Amat and Dominguez were equals last season. But a heathy Amat squad (rare last year) defeats Dominguez. A healthy Amat squad with Wells and Gaisie destroys Dominguez. But I guess the major point one must consider is that this "equal to Dominguez" Amat squad is returning 17 starters in 2007-2008.....awesome! =)
The SGV is watered down Aram sorry but it's true. Look at the #1 team in the SGV last year. Damien got crushed by a 6-4 I.E.team. I mean destroyed. Mendrun: the best QB in the SGV will play at Citrus with NO OFFERS OF ANY KIND!. Travis , thought to be one of the best receivers will also play there, yet he was a sure Div I player AGAIN WITH NO OFFERS OF ANY KIND!. And on and on. Hile was Defensive player of the Year in the tuff Sierra league and will walk on at UC Davis. Every big linemen from Damien will be on a JC team or not play at the next level. (that's coaching and lack of exposure that hurt them) What about LA, any better? Glendora with Edmonds? Where's he going to play? Pycho from CO? Yes CO had the Twin Towers and MJ and Covina had their speed guys but on a whole the Valley doesn't produce teams because they don't PAY TOP DOLLAR FOR COACHES!!!
Mendrun and Danny P. like many others go to out of the SGV for top level coaching. QB clinics in the SGV? Top linemen clinics in the SGV? Top RB clinics in the SGV? How about kicking clinics in the SGV?
Yes there are players that will go to the next level but the truth is the Valley is nada compared to the I.E. or OC. Get a grip. Our BEST team/school Amat is currently on a five year slump with 3 years out of the playoffs, sorry Bishop you suck ! The baseball fiasco proves that! Even Carson made you cry like girls at home! Charter Oak is pathetic as a talent base...hell Damien owns them and Damien is only .500 over four years. South Hills has a program because they match OC dollar for dollar in both athletics and academics. Other than that this SGV is piss poor.
Look at the facts: Top Ten SGV Teams/Coaching staffs
1) Bishop Amat.500 team with great expectations and fantastic recruiting services
2) South Hills great environment and great facilities
3) Los Altos great coaching staff and fertile transfer friendly administration
5) Charter Oak Farrar is a legend and knows how to feature talent
6) Damien all the size and talent in the world and no contacts and poor (Lavin/Melrose) coaching staffs..if they were not at Damien who else would have them? How many coaches on Damien's staff would Verti, Gano, Bogan, Farrar, Difiori hire?
7) Covina has the speed Div I is looking for but how about the grades?
8) West Covina Has the horses but not the discipline
9) Glendora has the size and coaching but not the nuts or the will to pay the price. Edmonds was the only player on that squad. Sorry Mike.
10) Diamond Ranch could be the next Diamond Bar od the 90's. They dodge no one and have a rich talent base with unreal dollars and new facilities.
Until the SGV pays the $$$ to get the clinics and coaching forget about dominating anyone. Look at El Dorado linemen vs. the Charter Oak linemen...no contest! The San Gabriel Valley is down. Look at Bishop Amat as the canary in the SGV cave...chirp chirp.

aram, i checked colorado's roster chappelle wasnt on there
Amat is the toughest head to head team in the SGV. Perhaps a team with some game breakers could have beaten them recently (WC or DR), but it is not likely.
However, Amat is no longer an elite D1 calliber team. I would love to have seen Amat replace SO ND in that division. Of course, Amat likely would not have beaten Dominguez, but they probably would have met in the finals. I understand Amat has too much pride to drop a division. So, they need to go the other route and get far more aggressive with their admissions and financial aid.
oc teams rule over sgv teams,a hole different breed of football.Los altos,sh,co,amat fans shut the hell up you all sound stupid.
what if what if what if.. you guys sound like a bunch of nuckel heads....
I am an ex WEST COVINA football player with a CIF ring on my finger and I will say this Amat would be CIF champs if they were in the SW div. hands down they might get some good games in with West Covina, South Hills , Los Altos and Charter Oak but they win every game. Im not a Amat fan but thats the truth..........
Due to the fact that Daylon McCutcheon was released and has not resigned with anyone yet after coming back from knee reconstructive surgery, do you think their is a possibility he want to coach now? He has already expressed an interest to come back and coach at amat after his pro career ends but it may be over now. How great would that be for the amat program and sorry to say to you amat haters recruiting wise? yes I am admitting it does happen, but it happens at every program to some degree.
Anyone have any feelings about this?
Aram
Here's another on for you. What if Damien, San Dimas and Bonita were one school. All these schools within 5 miles of eachother.
Also, Covina, Northview and SH.
Out!
Chapelle Brown, Los Altos Class of 2006 now at Colorado. Saw a lot of time as a freshman.
Living Legend,
Big time college football?...well you got the two from Amat someone posted not to mention Amats Vincent Federico playing for the New Mexico Lobos...Are you guys over there at Los Altos still looking to find a diamond in the rough and stop living in the the Cody Harwell days....Those days are over I dont see much roaming your halls that are even close to getting to BIG time College Football. Longoria is good but he is not D1 material.
Aram, you dead on right........bullseye.....you nailed it....if only they all went DBHS--even just the DRHS crew.....back in the day....we ruled the nest.....i hate down cycles.....i hate 'em....
YOU GUYS ARE STARTING TO PISS ME OFF!!!
What short memories some of you have. What's the matter with you guys? All this talk about the SGV being down is crap.
Up until last year, the SGV had a CIF champion in football every year of this decade. If you count Schurr as being part of the Valley, which you should, then we actually have had one every year this decade!
In a lot of years, we've had two CIF champs. We've had a team like South Hills win multiple titles this decade. And after the Huskies get one this year or next, they'll have championships in three different divisions!!!
Last year was a down year and we had Charter Oak in the finals. We had four semifinalists in CO, LA, Covina and Duarte. Oh yeah, don't forget about Schurr.
Los Altos' team in 2003 was arguably the best in SoCal! South Hills was one of the Top 20.
Bishop Amat's team in 2005 was easily one of the best in SoCal, as evidenced by wins over Loyola and Mater Dei, which were both semifinalists in Division I.
Nobody will be talking like this after the run South Hills, Los Altos and Charter Oak are about to go on. And hopefully, you can throw Amat in that mix, too.
You honestly want to know what the SGV's problem is? It's that we haven't perfected getting our top talent all on the same campus. Or two campuses, for that matter. We've got a lot of crybabies about Los Altos, Charter Oak and South Hills, but those same people would faint instead of cry if they saw what went on in Orange County.
And what region of SoCal is better than the SGV anyway? The OC? It's much bigger, it should be better. Plus, it has CIF by the b*lls! Who else is better? The Santa Clarita Valley? How many titles do they win per year? One? Just like the SGV. Plus, they do what we can't figure out how to do - they get the top talent on one campus. If all the Garey/D-Ranch/Phillips Ranch/Diamond Bar talent went to Diamond Bar High still, do you have any clue how good the Brahmas would be? Think Canyon or Hart. I guarantee it.
Some of you truly worry me!
You know what. I think we see a common bond here. We are all very competitive and want to win but more importantly we do not like people bad mouthing our valley. I despise the OC and am beginning to dislike some of the IE competition. I will make sure to keep it civil with other valley partners and root like hell when they compete against others outside the region.
Tnkaboutit,
Words of wisdom for sure, it seems we as in "SGV" need to be more supportive of each other collectively instead of so divisive...
AnyMouse...
For the most part I like to get on here on talk mess. But, tnkaboutit is right San Gabriel Valley does need to get better as a whole

COMMENT:
It would be a nice event for all of us to see. They both have great coaches heading the program. But I just dont see that happening anytime soon . Come on lets be real and think about it a little more in depth. They both represent the SGV, and if my mind serves me correctly are people are claiming that the SGV is down from the talent that used to lay fear to opposing teams. But maybe the battle is not between Amat and LA, instead it is the SGV vs everybody else. We need to strengthen our name as a valley, where we have teams from all different schools representing the kind of heart and attitude people have in the SGV. LA and Amat are good trademarks of what we have accomplished here, but we need to support these schools to make sure they stay at a level of high competition and competitive spirits. We just need to think about it. Then do something about it.
Comment: Heh, I'm surprised Gano had anything civil to say about anything on this blog.
LA vs Amat: Would be nice to see. LA could probably use one legitimate superpower on their schedule just to find out how good they are in a given year. Maybe fit them in week 2 or 3, as long as there is a week to recover in there.
Basically, playing Amat or anyone else for one game isn't a problem for LA... what they need to be careful about is the long term schedule. The difference between them and Amat is they don't have the depth in the line/LB positions (where 90% of the starters start both ways) to face that caliber of opponent week after week.
Living Legend,
I hope Verti did call local schools. I would love to see local rivalries established. According to those few questions, Verti seems very open to scheduling schools in the Valley.
not this past season, but last school year -
amat-Joathan Cornell - Ole'Miss
amat-Brandon Bennett - UCLA
is that big time enough?
any others?
Hey Mat did you even read what that dude jeremy even said..it is obvious that you did not cause he statement was this "the only Covina team that I saw, that might of competed, or possibly defeated BA was that '95 team"....as warped as this statement is he never even mention the past two years at Covina competing with Amat...and let me set you straight also jeremy that 95 covina team would have lost by 28 to the same 95 Amat team...that was am Amat team that sent 8-9 guys to d-1 schools (go back and check it out).....Now back to you Mat, i have been on here letting people know that Amat would beat anyone in this valley ok great and what exactly does that mean..it means you can beat up on a watered down valley (rumor has it your coach called a couple of valley vista schools to see if they had room on their schedule, go ask your coach see if he has the sac to speak the truth)...sometimes you go to far with how great Amat is, so now you get the wrath...your school has not been relevant in d-1 (now pac-5) football in a decade...you guys just dont get the players that you did a decade ago...there are no more minors, browns, humas among others walking around that campus. They just are not there...the real fact is that the valley as a whole is watered down. that is the truth. how many players from this valley went big time college footbal this past season?
Jeremy,
The coaches don't owe the fans, the former players or the boosters anything. Gano and Verti need to have the players on their team in mind and thats it. I'm a former player at Amat and I want to see it happen just for bragging rights. But Verti doesn't owe me anything just because I played there. Remember the players don't play for the fans. They play for their team.
The one thing about Amat rivalries is that within the last twenty years there have been no long term established ones with Valley schools. Ayala (2 years), Charter Oak(2 years), Glendora(2 years)and Damien (4Years).
Every team has a myopic fan. MAT just happens to be ours. He's probably a former player from the early 2000's team that really loves his school.
MAT,
Did you think Gano was going to come out and say Anat is crap and we are better and take their kids every two years? He gave a politically correct statement so don't buy into that stuff he said about us being "the premiere team". Sure it looks good in print but let's be real about it.
Jeremy,
The interpretation is not warped it is fact...We are the premier team of the SGV and all you haters cannot come to grips with it. Gano knows what he is talking about and from a coaches standpoint he would know, not You Jeremy. If what you claim is correct then you would be drawing up the x's and o's over there in Conq. land. We would beat Covina even with McD ..bottom line we are just that much bigger and stronger. Oaks Christian would have torched McD and Covina if they would have met in the Championship Game this past year..not comparing us to Oaks C. but they were a D1 legit team playing down and that is what would happen if Amat went down to your D6 level...all the crying would come out that we are destroying where we do not belong. If this does not make you Happy Jeremy then sorry bro. Get your team to come up and play us..if your team at LA so great come up and play D1 for the next 10 years....I doubt it...You guys reload very quickly..well we will see the jury is still out on that team..who are the stars there anyways? and if there are some, are any of them going on to play D1 college? uhhhhhhhhhhh NO!
Amat why not be classy and respond as if you are still a champion instead a chump?
Remember you're suppose to be "better than everyone else" act like it!
All local rivalries should make an attempt to play one another!
If the fans want it then both schools should make an attempt to make it happen. The fans are the community, and schools represent the community. Is it because both schools have a lot to lose (recruits) if they are not victors in the game? Play the game and give what the players and fans want.
bluorca
Yes Damien has SJB on their schedule this year.
Must have been at least 2, both in league, because amat went a couple rounds in the playoffs. (Lost to Fontana in a tiebreaker?)
Yes they lost in double overtime.
But it was ugly. Bad introduction to the DiFiori years.
Difiori was not a coach at Amat from 96 to 98 football seasons. Tommy Salts was the head coach.
Not only did Pollack break the leg at Ayala, but didn't Brian Russell break his collarbone that year also.
Pollack tore his knee and played with a torn miniscus(sp) when he returned. The younger Russell broke his collarbone in 99 season.
Ayala Bulldogs had an even better team in 97 and played a less experienced, supposedly not talented enough Amat team. I believe Ayala had two Players of the year and a few D1 talented seniors. Yet the final score was in Amat's favor and Michael Wagner had three rushing TDs and a punt return for a TD.
Respectable/respectful responses-
Joe Amat- debatable, but full of fact.
Bluorca- sometimes you are over the top, but you are in fact well informed, and some of the time unbiased.
MAT,
you on the other hand are ridiculous, even your interpretation is warped.
Anymouse,
the only Covina team that I saw, that might of competed, or possibly defeated BA was that '95 team.
Aram,
these coaches should care about this game. We aren't just mere intangibles, we are the a**es that warm the bleachers in their stadiums on Friday nights, some of us are former players who plan on breeding, some of us may be boosters!
"Los Altos just aren't what they used to be."
oh contraire, we are in the middle of re-birth.
All this Covina talk vs Amat.
I think it best be served that Covina stop comparing themselves to Amat and start focusing on how they will rebound after losing so much talent at the key postions.
Aram already pointed it out with the down 5 list.
Joe Amat,
Jim Wolak to Kenny Impastato...
You took me back a few years, I remember them well and your right they are not the same...
AnyMouse...
blu,
Must have been at least 2, both in league, because amat went a couple rounds in the playoffs. (Lost to Fontana in a tiebreaker?) 2nd round - that's a great year for most, isn't it : ) But it was ugly. Bad introduction to the DiFiori years. he never quite recovered and won the hearts of the amat faithful. Too bad, he was a much better coach than he got credit for. Not only did Pollack break the leg at Ayala, but didn't Brian Russell break his collarbone that year also. He probably enjoys being on the hitting end of those collisions in the NFL much better.
Mouse,
And I'm a big Covina fan from waaaaay back. Back in the Wolak to Impastato days in the championship at Citrus College. Spent a bunch of time at District Field. Love you guys - really (more before the whole "C-Town" thing but that's neither here nor there). However, and no disrespect intended, it is just not the same. I promise. Sorry.
Most people that post here are not intending to be disrespectful, but are just trying to defend there school. A few people, like blu, come back with facts. They are hard to argue - and can never be personal. They are what they are. You can't compare schedules, but maybe common opponents.
Definitely, comparing what the players go on to do at the next level is a decent indicator. So even in a horrible year like blu mentioned, of the two players who were injured, one started at UCLA and the other is in his 6th year and starting in the NFL. In a bad year. The college recruiting game is too sophisticated and coaching jobs are at stake for anybody to truly slip through the cracks. So the proof is in the pudding. Really.
Ok Ok...I will throttle back a notch...
Had to stir the pot a but though...lol
AnyMouse...
Have to go with Amat on this one Anymouse, Covina had some pretty good teams these last couple of years but Amat still beats them, even in last years down year. I saw Covina in 2 games last season vs Glendora and San Dimas, but I also saw several other SGV powers, I think they would have loss to a few of the other SGV teams in some tight games.
Don't act like Amat did not have any players that year. For crying out loud it followed the 1995 CIF Title run. Salter was still around too. Why did he leave? Did he clash with the school's adminstration?
Joe Amat
Your post to "Mouse" was all truth and nothing but the truth....My oh my how people do forget the immediate past. Thank God for maxpreps!
The 1996 Amat team lost not only to AYALA but also DAMIEN....If I remember correctly, Amat only won 1 or 2 games that year....I'm leaning towards 1.
Anymouse...
We are talking about the same Covina that has lost to Glendora 3 years straight right?
For the love of God please go to Maxpreps and compare scores before you write another post about any Amat vs. Covina game. You are making your own school's fans wince in pain every time you say something ignorant (i.e. without researching)
Do not make me post comparative scores...research it yourself....Hint...Glendora is the key! Thanks and have a pleasant evening.
Amat is not the only Pac-5 team out there....
I guess every other top Pac-5 program and Los Altos' schedule did not match up either. As a matter of fact, LA's schedule and good Div 1 competition has been plagued with schedule mismatches for at least 2 decades....What a shame.
Major props to West Covina for playing Mater Dei again!
Anyone know if Damien is playing St. John Bosco again?
Anyone know if Chino Hills is playing Mission Viejo?
That was a great way to shake things up Aram. Both coaches seem to entertain the posibility of playing one another maybe in the near future. On another note.
ARAM what is your take on this? All amat supporters what do you think? plausable, signifcant, encouraging....
BTW Joe, I like Amat....The comments by some Amat boosters show so much disrespect to the rest of the SGV teams that they need to be responded to...
AnyMouse...
Joe Amat,
I am far from kidding myself...
Amat would not have been able to compete with Covina in either of the last 2 seasons, they didnt have the speed, number of weapons or tenacity...
AnyMouse...
Sadly, the gap between Amat and whomever is #2 on the field in the SGV is not nearly as wide as it used to be. I say it is sad because the gap has been closed through Amat's fall, not from the others' rise. I think talent across the SGV is not nearly as deep as it used to be and that has hit every school, even Amat which has no set boundaries. A lot of would-be football families have moved east and south. That's the real difference all around. Even Ayala and the Chino schools are not as strong as they were even 5 years ago. Probably too many schools opened.
Anyway, Amat should play at least one of the other perennial valley top 5 teams every year. It would be nice for the local kids who play for Amat to be able to play some of their buddies.
Bulldog,
I remember that year. Watched it from the press box and ate all of that Ayala food at Cal State Fullerton. You guys did things right back then.
I remember that year well. It was in between two consecutive trips to the CIF Finals and two consecutive trips to the semis. I'll take that 5 year run anytime.
But of all people, an Ayala guy piling on to the "what have you done lately" bandwagon.
"Hey pot... this is the kettle...."
Mouse,
You are absolutely kidding yourself if you think that, even in Covina's BEST years against amats' WORST year that it would even be close.
If you follow things that I have said, I am FAR from a myopic amat apologist (or cult member-as you say) I am the first to admit that we have made some awful moves, and have fallen on hard times-compared to the tradition that alumni are used to. Compared to the rest of the valley - not so much.
richie-rich had it right, the discussion used to be about Amat, Poly, DeLaSalle, etc. and who was better NATIONALLY. When that was the conversation, no one would have even dared to pretend that they could step on the field with the Lancers. Now that that conversation does not exist, it opens the door for for every Tom, Dick, and Harry that wins their little league a chance to say, "..Well if we..." Or because they had some success in some two-bit 7on7 passing tournament (when amat is going to throw the ball 9 times a game anyway). So now the conversation has changed to rebut all of that foolishness.
Some have tried to strap 'em on. Ask Lou at Charter Oak what it was like, they are done with that experiment. Ask Pasquerella (while at Ayala, Damien, or Glendora), he used to even be a afarm boy in the little Valle Vista league - so he knows the deal. Ask HH Wilson. the last time they tried it was a great game right before they entered league. Then they lost their 1st 4 games in league because of the beating that they took. Never again!!
amat MVPs get DI scholarships and play in the NFL. This year had one drafted after his Jr year. You remember - a starting DB on a National Championship team. Covina MVP's go where? Are the college coaches screwed up then? Even in the last 5 "down years" amat players are getting full rides. Colts? What do you think would happen if those players lined up across the line of scrimmage - with pads on?
You think you know - but you have NO idea.
What happened in 1996 Amat? Oh yeah, you played the AYALA BULLDOGS! D-2 team that you thought you could beat up on. Wrong, Getheral had your only TD, Pollack limped away with a broken leg. Ayala kicked you tails all over the field! With all of our players living in our school boundaries.
Joe Amat...
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha...........
Thanks for the laugh...
VV #1 last yr would have gone through amat like a wet paper bag...
Like I said, cult mentality...Thanks for the laughs...
AnyMouse...
Mat,
Because Gano has respect for your program should not be equated to...
Your Quote...
"Which goes to show that we would beat the area teams even on down years in the PAC5........"
I am starting to believe you guys are brainwashed at Amat.
How smug, how sick, how similar to a cult mentality...
Yikes... Do the Amat backers even read what they type before posting?
AnyMouse...
It seems like just yesterday when players like Sermons, McCutcheon, Brown, Minor, Huma, Getherall, Pollack, Guanko, Russell, and Montanez were the inspiration behind the debate over who had the best team...Amat, Mater Dei, De La Salle, and other elite national programs. The fact that this blog topic exists truly speaks volumes as to how far Amat has fallen. Now you’re debating Los Altos, South Hills, and Charter Oak?
Ok Amat. You're the best in the Valley. So what does that get you...you're Amat you're supposed to be. Your focus should be the playoffs...and how to participate in them.
Good job by Aram though…way to stir it up.
Conq Alumn,
You are right LA was the real deal back in the day. As was South Hills. Workman and Edgewood were the wannabe football teams at that time.
'74 CIF playoffs (I think). LA/Amat in front of a standing room only crowd at MSAC. (LA can't fill 1 side in Jeremy's"Mauch Memorial"0. Old School California Tiebreaker overtime. Put the ball on the 50 and alternate 4 offensive plays. Whatever side of the 50 the ball ends up on determines the winner. Amat wins by a yard on a 4th down reception at LA's 49. It was about that evenly matched too. Both teams (and schools) respected each other. Hertel and the boys would end up at Amat parties - and vice versa.
Both programs have stumbled some since that era. As has the rest of the SGV. amat has most recently. The CIF reconfiguration has hidden Los Altos' a bit. No fault of Los Altos - you have very little choice in where you are placed. But the early DeSpain teams (as well as the South Hills and Amat teams of that era) would pound most present teams.
All you have to do is be up close to the action (on the sidelines or on the field) and compare the speed and force behind the collisions to realize that there are clearly different levels of play. The Cody, Aguilar years and the matchups with Charter Oak were close - Valle Vista does not even compare - even when South Hills was still there. And there is nothing wrong with that. Players from those teams/leagues can go on and compete at the next level. Even a CIF POY like Aguilar only played non-scholarship DIII.
But it is not the same.
Great Job Aram!,
Now we can see that a game does not really enter these coaches minds but they are not against possibly having a game since they do not duck each other. Gano labeling Amat as still the premier team in the SGV and the respect he shows Amat should explain something to their fans. Even tho we have been losing in the D1 and Pac5 we are not having season of 1-9 or 0-10 or 2-8...we still compete to the fullest. Which goes to show that we would beat the area teams even on down years in the PAC5........Hope you planted a seed Aram and these coaches brings us fans what been wanting to see for awhile.
Coach Despain had the talent pool back in the day to play anyone. That's just not the case today in the SGV, unless you're a pay-to-play school like Amat who can draw more talent than the public schools.
Even LA's Cody, Harwell teams (D-6) would be run out of town by the '82, and earlier (D-2, D-1, Big 5) LA teams.
Wow! Good job Aram.
But, truth be told Coach Despain would make it happen he never ducked anyone. L.A. used to have at least one huge preseason game every year.
