BE A GOOD SCOUT!

| | Comments (1999) |

POST YOUR OWN SPRING (FOOTBALL) PRACTICE REPORTS HERE.
I will start this thread for those of you who have visited practices at any of our SGV schools. Please start by telling us where you watched from ... were you that guy in his truck on the street? Were you two blocks away with binoculars?
Then, let everyone know what you thought, even if it's a simple "So and so looked yolked." I'll decide what's good enough to stay posted. Also, when/if I get out to a practice, I will post what I saw. We already have two solid reports. They're posted in the comments section.

When the bride and maids of honor as a friend or sister, now in a situation where you personalized Replica Handbags Discount for bridesmaids to make.

it sounds they might be better than last year. The season will rest with the QB and RB. Pertrusati and McMahon will deteremine the success of keeping that young defense off the field long enough for it to jell.

West Covina:

Went to see West Covina practice,as per my invitation from Dan, and I like to keep my promises so I went.

Here's the skinny.

West Covina runs a good old fashion, why I love high school football, practice. Attention to detail, great instruction, lots of potential players, great comraderie, loose , fast, aggressive and quick. Did I mention aggressive?

These coaches get the meaning of "get after it". Get them together on the same page, teach them the fundamentals, explain the techniques ssslllooowwwlllyy, and then execute, practice , practice, practice until it's second nature muscle memory. All the while looking at every player's technique, effort and making corrections. Nice coaching style, staff and personnel. These guys got something going and it's taking hold.

After that it's scrimmage time. First you LEARN then you DO! THAT WAS FUN! The defense was fast, great pursuit angles and aggressive. Again ALOT of INSTRUCTION. I really liked the spacing and flow to the ball. Ball hawking system. Again great coaching and "live wire" players. The offense was hard to judge because nothing is there until pads come on.(that's when the men come out and the ladies get moved to the side) But the RBs are willing, the WRs are fast and line is huge. Didn't get to see the QBs much but hey that's what passing league is for. The DBs sure do close on the ball quick though.

Here's my view on this team from what I saw. It's no wonder they stepped up and played Mater Dei. Could they have won the whole thing last year. Who knows lots of lost players. But this year is new and the coaching staff is pumped. I liked them. Can't wait to see the first days of "hitting".

Best of luck to West Covina and it's outstanding coahcing staff. Thanks for the invitation Dan. Super nice guy.

Off to see Diamond Bar (Randy), Charter Oak (Farrar's boys) and the creme de la creme....South Hills (QB Central). I'll wait for a sunny day so I can see the "QB Trio" make it rain! lol Besides is there a prettier sight than a ball flying 40 yards in the air and seeing two athletes fight step for step for the ball?

That was painless.lol

Got a chance to see San Dimas yesterday. Nico Barbone wasn't running the ball, but was on defense. I wasn't too impressed with how they looked. They had some beef, but they still look like Soft Dimas.

remember who the new principal at CO is !!! She is a hard core sports fan & formerly from Amat. Is'nt her maiden name " Salter " ????? Think again !

Laugh Factory said:

Red River...that's a lot to believe. Let's see Coach Farrar and Co. take the team to the Championship Game and almost win yet you're saying when Big Lou leaves all his staff will be shown the door?

Yup and Erik Estrada's land that he pushes on those late night commercials is a real "steal". That's a tall tale you're spinning there buddy. That staff could be at Bishop Amat quicker than they'd be at CO.

Where do people get his stuff??? So this awesome staff is going to be "INTACT" on the shelf for a whole year waiting for CO to retire Farrar and CO. What if CO/Farrar wins the Championship this year? You know they're loaded right?

WOW!

Red River said:

Here is something for all you S.G Valley football fans to digest. Sources say that Charter Oak football coaching staff will have a new look for the following year 2008. Coach Lou Farrar will finish out this year but look for a former San Gabriel Valley head coach to take over. Sources say that Tom Salter will leave Culver City and take the reins. Look for his staff to include B. Mullvehill (former Rancho head coach), Joey Getherall (Notre Dame grad), Steve Hagerty (Riv. Poly) Glen Martinez (ex Amat coach) and on defense Joey Strcula to work with Daylon McCutcheon (USC). More to come.

In Peyton Manning's freshman year in the NFL, he threw 28 picks in 16 games.

Get a life...

You try being consistent being thrown in and out every other series and see how many interceptions you throw.......

I have said all along Pasqie "Shottenheimer" should have stayed with "Kluz" or "Crookie" it didn't matter just be consistent.

Dan, I'd love to. West Covina has always intrigued me. They have talent and balls, to be blunt, but it seems they lack discipline. Maybe that's just an individual thing or some kids bought a bad break. Either way I welcome the invitation.

Here's the thing about being a blog cop. "to protect and to serve" that means everyone or no one. I'm sure you've witnessed worst on this blog and said less. By the way I saw nothing wrong written about QB K. other than kids against kids oneupmenship. Trash talking I think it's called.

I played the position and QB K while courageous can not make all the throws as compared to Castaneda or Mendrun. If that's the yardstick he's a little short. That's not to say he won't be successful it's just being objective. As far as his wieght and size. That's his frame and I'm sure if he wanted to get bigger he would have already. I think he's going with what he's got. Good luck to the kid.

Next time instead of being a blog copper look at football player/athletes as if you don't know them. It makes it easier to take you seriously. No offense but it's football and most people here just talk about pride, integrity and misguided loyalties veiled as objective review. Step back and see QB K vs. Mendrun? Vs. Castaneda, vs, Renoke from Chino Hills, vs, Baca from Ayala, vs Crook? Doesn't look too good. Now vs. Pertusati...jury's out!

Hopefully QB K will prove everyone wrong and make ALL LEAGUE. I wish him well as I do ANY QB, having played QB myself, I KNOW the pressure but if you ask QB K he knows it comes with the job.

Cop/Coach said:

You are misinterpreting me Meanie.

Talk about anyone you want. I just don't like people (mostly adults...frustrated ex-athlete adults) trashing any high school kids. I take a personal interest if I know the kid or his family. If that makes me the blog cop...so be it.

BTW, Drew Kaluzny can make all of those throws. He can indeed throw on the run. He has been able to throw while running to his left (a tough throw for a right hander)since he was 11 years old.

I also said he did not have prototypical size. That may all change. He has an older brother who is 6-6.

Mean Machine said:

Cop/Coach..is that the criteria for NOT talking about a player. They are your son's friends, played with your son, you coached them, know their parents or any other self appointed reason.

Here's my take on Kluszy,(sic) we'll all find out together. Maybe yes maybe no...but to say he can make all the throws is being kind. All the throws means fades, streaks, outs, curls, deep outs, deep comebacks, on the run, in the pocket and many others. Hope he can but being from a nice family or having great parents never stopped anyone before. But thanks for playing Blog Cop.

El Rancho said:

The kid who transfered from El Rancho to Los Altos is Sean Acuna, he would have been a 3 year starter at ER had he stayed. He has pretty good size and has some pretty good strength, LA got a good kid i've known this kid since he was in elementary school.

Cop/Coach said:

Stop bagging on Kaluzny. He is a great kid with cool parents. He would never stoop so low as to talk trash on or off the field. He works hard and is a good leader.

Don't underestimate him. He may not have prototypical size, but he can make all the throws. He can run if he has to and he won't make mental errors. He can lead Glendora to a great season if the offense performs around him.

For you Damien folks riding him...one of his best friends plays for the Spartans and he also is good friends with my son since they all played at Glendora Jr. All-American together.

So cease the personal B.S. attacks.

Where the Beef?

I guess you haven't seen our o line or running backs. Alot more overall talent at Damien.

Your Qb is slow, small and below average arm strength. As everyone knows the plattoning stopped! Why? Give you some guesses?

Your running backs are good movers from side to side but have very limited break away speed. Edmonds will be hard to replace.

Your Oline is not the talk of the town, its your defense. Here again, no true speed guys on the big D. In order to play the game, you need to be able to get the beef moving!

Just look what happen to the big bad BEARS defense in the super bowl. I tell you, the big bad QB named Payton!!!!

Mean machine said:

Where's the Beef?

The first thing you need to know is the TRUTH means nothing to some of these Damien backers. Like McMahon being better suited to RB ...this year but not last...should of heard the comments back then when it was suggested he play RB again. Now apparently, after a year playing safety he's learned "Not to fumble" (their words not mine)I think McMahon will be very very good this year so please no hate you comments from the peanut gallery.

Danny P. is a pretty good athlete. Does that translate into being a great QB ? Who knows? But Damien will find out quick because they don't have a quality backup and that spells problems for this team unless the Running game goes wild.

Glendora vs. Damien in the Sierra League opener will be anti-climatic because the season will already be played out before this game for both teams. If you don't know what that means...I can't help you.

Where's the Beef said:

Damien Rocks##

I beleive the post read "Your QB has less experience than Kaluzny"... How many Varsity games did Danny P. play QB? Kaluzny was behind center in nearly every game plattoning with Crook. Some games only for several plays, others for 1/2 the game or more. Does Varsity experience matter? I would say it certainly doesn't hurt. Your the one who added "better QB" not Anonymous.

No doubt, Danny P has the talent, but, as we all know, its going to take a lot more (i.e. strong, experienced o line, running backs, receivers, etc..) for your QB to succeed.

Glendora vs Damien in league opening game should be very exciting. My bet would be on Glendora. I don't think your QB alone would have any chance against this seasons Glendora Defense.

Hey, Plaid Fan don't get caught up with the "all you can eat" bashing (Damien Rocks) wants you to chomp on. GHS fans that have kept thier ears close to the rail know exactly whats coming. We can't expect outsiders to understand the support and passion we have for our team. DR's comment regarding a particular players position only opens the doors to maybe their own teams weaknesses, which I'm sure they are having problems dealing with. But still don't be surprised, because Morrison & Company will come ready to play ball and like clock-work our PLAIDY-LADDIES will be there to obilge them.

Mean Machine said:

This was suppose to be a "SCOUT REPORT" not really a "SPY" report. It's degenerated into pettiness and gossip nonsense. That's too bad.

Just comment on the team speed, the organization and the team overall sense of focus. If a player stands out , great comment on that. If a player needs help, hey that's what "moving up to VARSITY" is all about---it's faster, the players are smarter and quicker, and games are played with "schemes", and finally everyone HITS HARDER!

Here's a tip:

Everything is relative:

Great speed with no hands or great hands with no speed? Which is more valuable? Depends. Think James Jett or Ron Brown vs. Steve Largent and Cherbert?

Quick, fast powerful back with bad work ethics or Average speed, average quickness with great work ethic and solid citizen. Think Ricky Williams, Lawerence Phillips vs Ricky Watters, Tiki Barber, Shaun Alexander, Martin from the Jets.

That's what matters. It's not what you have, it's what you do with what you have that really makes the difference!

As far as Damien Rocks. You must be looking in the mirror. Other than your kicking game everthing is the same. Glendora and Damien are one in the same.

Running Game-edge goes goes to Glendora. They know how to RUN THE BALL.

Run Defense- edge goes to Glendora. Team defense and great scheme.

Passing Game-edge goes to Damein. They know how to PASS THE BALL.

Pass Defense-edge goes to Damien. Better overall speed in the secondary.

Defense- Tie. Both play well against inferior talent. Nut up against superior talent. And lay down when they are confused.

Special teams- Damien in the kicking game.

Head Coach: Tie. Both have won Championships. Although Pasquerella does have a 3-1 record against Morrison inspite of Damien's superior talent. So why did I call it a tie? Might be momentum from last year. Check back after this year's game. It's going to be very interesting. DHS vs GHS might be the game that decides who gets teh axe and who gets the extension come contract time.

Talent: Damien. Hands down. They pull from more cities and it's private.

Assistant Coaches: Glendora. More experience.

As far as team speed "Damien Rocks" did Temescal Canyon have alot of SPEED? NO. They just knew how to run the ball. Monrovia had the best overall team speed of any team other than Rancho Cucamonga and what did either team do in the playoffs. Nada!

A great team with great overall team speed and great work ethic. Canyon Country.

I have been around the SGV since the mid 80's (back when I was in school). I have seen and known far better players who never made much of themselves! You can have all the athletic talent in the world, but if you.......... have no grades, are uncoachable, or have overbearing parents, you wont do crap!

Follow the blog history. I was not the first to mention these kids names, I would never do that. One of your own, amat fan was the one that did that. At that point it was in the open, again by one of your own.

I have no problem keeping kids names out of this or any other blog, that rule should apply 24/7. They are all minors, no matter the school and should not be slammed no matter the subject. Lets see if we all can be man enough to do that regardless of the topic.

i think the point has now been made. Any negative statement about a kid or kids should be removed from now on, not just selected ones.

I still think you guys are going overboard about spring ball. Until the pads come on in August all this mess does not matter! In my years of coaching, I have seen kids who looked great in spring ball/passing league, but then wouldn't hit a fly in pads!

Saw Glendora practice last week and will be seeing CO this comming week (report later).

Heard alot about this "awesome" Glendora defense and I was every bit impressed after seeing them. It's still early, but these experienced studs really know their assignments; STRONG, FAST AND BRUTAL would be my observation. There is alot of muscle out there, the kids have certainly been doing their weight training in off season.

I saw at least two young QB's working the offense; both were very impressive, smart, good arms, accurate and fast. Both need to gain a little weight.

A number of real speedsters for running backs, smaller under wait though. Glendora seems to have several, very good receivers with good size this season. Very exciting.

Overall impression: Very, very strong defense. Much bigger o line than expected with very good strength and speed. Excited about the QB potential: at least two very smart QB's, good arms, speed and strong leadership/presence. Very sure handed tall receivers. Several of the running backs need to gain some weight, very fast though.

League potential: Can't imagine many teams scoring much on this D. Glendora won't need many points to win games. I am not worried about this offense at all. Should be top contender in league.

I will report on CO next week.

Christian Education and Morals are supposed to go hand in hand, lets wait it out and see what happens.

Msgr. Carroll must go!!!!!!!!!!!

i guess it hasnt gotten out. both guys are suspended right now and word has it kicked out. coaches were suposed to have a meeting today with the board to fight it. The dean in charge at amat HATES FB players in general so they're giving them harsher punishment than if it were any other student.

ARROYO is a good pick for the pre-season top 10. Aram knows his football when he talks about "good QB + good coach = good season".
Brian Partida is going to have a stellar senior season as QB and Head Coach Jim Singiser is looking for his fourth MVL Championship in five years!!
Plus, the Knights have a solid offensive line, an experienced and stingy "swarm" defense and some good targets for Partida to throw to. It's true that Arroyo has a multitude of talented players returning, but who are the transfers that Aram mentioned and how good are they? What positions do they play and where did they come from?
The MVL schedule for Arroyo sets up very nicely:
Open league play by hosting El Monte (was an awesome game last year),
then @ Mountain View,
the Grudge Match and chance for sweet revenge when the Knights host the visiting SEM Eagles (I can see the "Not THIS year!" and "Not in OUR HOUSE!" posters already)
then the rivalry/cross-town showdown @ Rosemead in week nine,
and a week ten home game with Gabrielino.
The Knights should head into CIF with an undefeated league championship, a train-full of momentum and a home game for the first round.
GO KNIGHTS GO!

This is excerpt from Mean Machine on another thread ...

Seen Damien today and those boys are huge, and not in a good way. They looked a little blown up. Maybe Morrison will pare them down with windsprints but the linemen looked puffy big not yoked out big. One of the Dads said the players were on a 4000 calorie diet to gain size but I find that hard to believe. Maybe someone could address that tall tale. Either way Damien is loaded with size, and skilled position people. As wierd as it sounds they might be better than last year. The season will rest with the QB and RB. Pertrusati and McMahon will deteremine the success of keeping that young defense off the field long enough for it to jell.

What's going to be interesting is how many new players and stars will come from the Freshman class who are really, really talented. Again why do players insist on not dressing alike and making so many modifications to the uniforms? Get a clue you're on a TEAM look like IT!

An interesting side note the last time Damien won league/shared league was in 2003-2004 with the great Ian Johnson. The very next year Damien went 2-8. That might happen again. But then again lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place does it?

Report Card said:

Caught a little of LA's first spring practice from a distance, know it's not much, but here's the early report card:

TE Ray Rodriguez is an animal! Probably put on 10-15 lbs of rip in the offseason. Might put on another 10-15 in the summer. If Gano gets ahold of some SD Charger films...Look out! Kid could easily average 100yrd and 2 TDs a game. (A+)

RB Bryce McBride is going to fit well on this team. Kid has speed, strength, work ethic and best of all smarts. He has the potential to be the best RB they've had there since.......(A)

O-Line...one word: Experience. Three returners and if you count Rodriguez at TE that's four. These kids, led by Longoria, are going to be able to open nice holes for McBride and that should be enough to make most teams bring 8 into the box opening up a mediocre passing attack. (B+)

WR/RB/All-Purpose Tony Seanez might be the fastest kid on the team...yes folks, even faster than McBride. His size could be a concern (5'6" with cleats on asphalt). He needs to touch the ball 8-12 times a game for LA to be successful...Think Reggie Bush. (B+)

QB Tillis...jury is still out. Athletic but can he throw the rock well enough to keep teams honest? Or will LA have to look elsewhere for their QB? Don't be suprised to see last year's Freshmen step up and be "good enough" for Gano. Howing's a WR now. If he's under center come September something's wrong. (C)

As for Webb...He was MIA. Can't wait to find out the real story here. Too many rumors to sort out. If LA does things right, they won't need him. They could certainly use him...but they won't NEED him. (F)

Defensively...LA has some serious holes to fill, namely Foss in the secondary, Lavea at D-End and Acosta at LB (Yes, those last two were both injured in LA's 14-7 loss to El Dorado...imagine if they were both playing...LA v. CO Final). McBride will help, but that may not be enough. Longoria will anchor the middle and Rodriguez will handle his end but they'll have a hard time keeping good offensive teams in check. (C+)

Overall Grade: (B)

Anyone want to fill us in on some other SGV squads?
