Shrine Game canceled ....
First of all, I blame you. We'll get back to that in a second. I wrote an article today that ran in all three of our publications. I suggest you read it. Basically, the Shrine Game is taking a year break due to a lack of orginization. Supposedly, this is only a year break and not an altogether cancellation of the event. But if you've been tracking the game's recent struggles - poor attendance, limited TV coverage and controversial selection process - you know that it's unfortunately on its last leg.
It will be a very sad day in SoCal high school football if the Shrine Game becomes extinct. And who's to blame for all of this? Well, to be blunt, everyone is at fault. Fans for not attending. Players for not playing. Game organizers for not running things properly i.e. changing with the times. Did you go to last year's game? I did. It was at Citrus College. I don't think I saw you there because I truly didn't see anyone there. I do know that I saw some players on the roster who weren't legit all-stars. Second team all-leaguers selected to play because of connections or coaching preference. So what can be done to revive a game that used to get massive crowds decades ago? I got a call today from Jay Johnstone, who read my article. He's interested in taking a shot at preserving this part of SoCal sports history. Will anybody else step up?

I agree with the blogger who said all star games are boring unless you know the players. They would be more interesting if politics and other factors didn't interfere with the games
The name of the player that "hung himself" was Ron Settle
What is this Al-Malaikah organization that I read about in the paper?
I don't think the problem is the game taking place in summer. The Hall of Fame Game continues to get big crowds ... bigger last year than what they had at the Shrine Game. They play a CaliFlorida Bowl in December/January and it's absolutely awful. It's cold and nobody goes because they're kinda burnt out on football at that point. If anything, I think playing mid-summer is a good thing because people are jonesing for the season to begin. It tides them over.
I think the game should be scheduled closer to the end of the season after CIF.
It's June and football was over in November!
First shrine game I went to was as a young kid going to the Coliseum to watch super rb's Randy Meadows(Downey hs) and Anaheim's great rb Mickey Flynn. Crowd was huge around 70 thousand. This used to be the highlight game of the summer and the teams really disliked each other. Some of the stars I remember from the south were Mike Garrett(Roosevelt),Alex Sotomayor(Garfield),Mickey Cureton(Centennial Compton),Forrie Martin,James McAlister,Kermit Alexander(Blair hs),Pat Haden and John Mckay(Bishop Amat),Steve Grady(Loyola),all the former all stars from Carson and Banning. Once the game was moved from the Coliseum the interest declined along with the many other all star games. The only other big game in the 60's was the LA City vs San Diego played in SD.
Aram the kids play with intense but its more like who can be the biggest badass on the field and it usually turns into a fight because nothing can really happen to them ,the game is a waste of time and im talking about the bassett game.
I remember when the Shrine Game meant you were the BEST OF THE BEST...alas NO MORE.
I remember seeing Samoa Samoa from Carson and seeing and "hearing" his "extended" Family, do Samoans have any other kind, behind us in the Colesium stands. This poor kid from Boyle Heights never seen people that BIG...even the women were LARGE! And talk about friendly...bradah this bradah that! When Samoa Samoa dived in from the 5 ,full launch, sorry Reggie ..it was done 30 years BEFORE you, the cheer from behind us shook the stadium...and then he took off his helmet and boom that Samoan smile!!!!! Whata treat!
I saw Athony Munoz on the sidelines in his Lettermen Jacket...HUGE!!! And LATINO and going to USC...some things never change! lol
Also saw this great RB from Long Beach who later became the center of a Signal Hill Jailhouse "Hanging" (too morbid and sad to go into). He hurdled a DB on his way to a 70+ yard TD. Completely awesome talent! Giddles I believe but not sure..Joe Amat? Help on that one.
Anyway it's a sign of the times that everyone wants to be on a travel team (any sport), an ALL STAR team (any sport) and that's what really diltues the merits of these games. Look at the 605 All Star Game and Hall of Fame Game...combine the two and then you have something to brag about. Gonna miss the Shine Game because it used to help kids....and we got to see a great game played by future great COLLEGE players.
Last ALL STAR game I went to was with Joey Gerathall at Fullerton. He was "magic" on the field..and yes from Bishop Amat. Also a great QB from TEXAS got hurt on almost the last Texas series...anyone know what happened to him and who he was?
End of Rocking Chair BS session.....got to take my "after supper" walk.
Thanks Shiners for all the awesome memories.
Who cares. Unless you personally know one or more of the players, there is nothing more boring than an "allstar" game in any sport at any level.
MAT,
Come to Bassett on July 6 and tell me if you think nobody cares. The Hall of Fame Game is one of the most fierce games of the year. That's intense stuff. I agree with you about most other games, including the Shrine. But even at that, the game is entertaining at half speed. Or maybe I feel that way because I'm such a jones for HS football. People could make sense of going by saying "Hey, it's for charity." But even for charity, people want to see a show.
Nothing can top the So Cal No Cal Bowl Games that went on at the Home Depot Center. Face it these games do not sell tickets and senior players do not want to risk injury in a meaningless game like this if they have a full ride awaiting them. CIF D1 Champ vs Top City Champ and you may get a draw. These all star games, no one cares not even the players.
Come on aram there are players that don't belong on the allstar roster for the allstar game in july at bassett, there never going to get it right.
What a shame. The Shrine Game used to be a showcase for Talent in California. I remember when it was the North vs. South, and it was played at the Rose Bowl. Those were some good teams. The list of Alumni who played in that game is Amazing. I hope it comes back. Not just for football, but if you've ever gone to the Shrine Hostpital in LA, then you'd know why this game is Important. I believe the Shrine Game Motto was "Strong legs Run, so Weak Legs May Walk." The football players who visit the Shriners Hostpital the week before the game come out with a different aspect on life. To see the kids who cant walk, or a kid who has 3rd degree burns on 80 percent of their body is kind of shocking. And you have to put things into perspective. The game is played by the best football players in the State, so the unfortunate can have a better life. Thats the best reason to play a game. There's no All-Star game in So CAL, that I know about like that, and it's a shame that is has to be cancelled for a year. I hope they get it back on track and I'll be willing to step up and help out any way I can.
