The shot heard around the SGV ...

A familiar scene at Northview games this season.

WHAT A DAY FOR SGV TEAMS!
Northview 4, Bonita 3 - R.J. Arnold delivers a walk-off, 3-run homer.
San Dimas 9, Lompoc 8 - These Saints are road warriors.
Charter Oak 16, Norte Vista 2 - Ditto.
Nogales 3, Alhambra 2 - Romano and the Nobles defy logic, win in 10.

Both dongs were hit to the same place (sorta).

ABOUT NORTHVIEW VS. BONITA: I've never seen such a stunning end to a prep baseball game. What amazed me was the silence right after Arnold went yard. The Bonita fans were obviously shocked, but I don't think it even registered with Northview fans for about a minute. That's probably because it happened so quick. Arnold came to the plate, took a cut, then took another and connected. Poof! Game over! Absolutely unreal!!!!

Yeah, I believe that lady was right about there not be a change at Glendora in their baseball program. Jacobsen and Leduc don't have the stones to make a change despite everyone, including assistant coaches wanting a change at the top. Its an old boys club at Glendora and anyone who knows Glendora knows that no one even sneazes at Glendora without Leduc's approval. If someone cares about the program, they'll make a change, but don't hold your breath because Henley is good at stong arming people who don't agree with him. There is no comprimise with this guy and yet, his way is 14-33-1 over the past three years in league. Great road to follow the little guy on!

Umm...this game has been played already peeps...Ya'll crack me up sometimes...

Amat defeated NV this year 6-2 at the Glendora Tournament...

Old News would not appear so new to some of you if some of you actually did a bit of research (i.e. Maxpreps)

Too bad for the Glendora baseball players!

The athletes and the program deserve better

Anonymous said:

That would be too bad if you are right. How much LOSING can one program that used to be proud go through without a change? If Leduc doesn't make a change, parents will send their kids to other school's so as to not put up with the Henley doctrine.

Anonymous said:

Just a note regarding recent rumors re: Henley leaving Glendora. It isn't true! Check with the schools AD if you don't believe it. I am a reliable source who works in his district. Let's talk about the twelve scholar athletes and two valedictorians on the 2007 team instead. The purpose of a blog is to promote what? Let's spread the right word about student athletes and programs, not slanderous untrue statements!

AnyMouse,

I hope Amat does well in playoffs as I do with Northview. I wish all the teams would have been still playing. I know RJ very well and a bunch of Amat players too. It can be funny how things get said on the this blog comparing schools when many of the players from these schools are actualy friends and play summer ball together.

My son will not be able to attend Amat for 13 more years.

You idiot, you don't even know the lineup of Northview. You put 3 or 4 wrong guys at positions that they don't start at or not even on the team. Don't make unintelligent posts about a team unless you know them. I think your coach vote is not accurate as well...Sorry, but not everyone loves your school or better yet, your coach...I take Northview coach in a heartbeat.

go away henley said:

"Its about time," I hope you're right about Henley. He is a cancer in the baseball program at Glendora...and what nobody gets is that his impact is so negative on so many young lives and he doesn't care.....he thinks everybody else just doesn't get it. If its three people saying it, believe the coach, if its several people each year, the team isn't winning and the program is heading south, its time for a change. Move on Henley.

You lump all Amat alum and fans into one group based on this blog. Please remember that thousands have passed thru the school and it is just a few chose to write on this blog. I have spoken to quite a few alums and they find is dishearting that all Amat alums are looked at this way. We are proud of our school just as anyone of would be of thier school.
I would love all the SGV HS teams do well. Talking to players from each team in the playoffs have said they would like to see all the teams do well. I have not heard a one say anything negative about another HS.

Joe Amat said:

AnyMouse,

It's probably nol more fair to lump all of the amat posts together than it is to group that whole Valle Vista league thread, or the Charter Oak fiasco, or the South Hills backbiting sessions. It seems to me that there are enough skeletons in everyones closet that generalizations are not a good idea and no one is immune. I'm sure that there are many Covina posters that you'd prefer not to claim.

I know that there are MANY lancers who routinely cheer for other schools in the valley and ALWAYS when they are against schools from outside our area. The more WE all win the better WE all look. (Selfishly, if amat is to make the claim that we are the best in the valley, it only makes sense to hope that the valley looks as good as possible. Otherwise it looks just like winning a DV championship...OOPS! : )

I'd just as soon see Nogales beat Loyola (and I'm ticked that they knocked of SH) in DIII, CO or SD vs Northview and amat beat Monrovia in the finals of each division. Heck, GO Southland Christian in DVII !!! Let's hope they get by Packinghouse Christian in the semis (...yes - that is a real school)

I think what get's the lancer faithful is smacking a division that we were put in (not of our choosing, and belittling teh Del rey League, when in fact, it isn't half bad. La Salle won a tournament in Vegas , beating a tough Bishops Gormon team that defeated a 21-10 La Mirada team (still alive in DIII) in the finals of the Bishop Gorman tourney. St Paul, who defeated Glendora, is still playing and faces Monrovia - so we'll see how they fair. Bishop Montgomery beat St Paul 2 out of 3 and even St Monica beat Salesian (I just thru that in for my good buddy "Mean Machine : )

Granted that was then and this is now - but comparitive scores is all we can go by. So the league isn;t that bad and would compete favorably against most teams (yes - most) in the valley.

Good Luck to all

Amat, just like northview has progressed since the 2nd game of the season and your're right. it would not be the same, because it would not be close the second time around. Amat has a way more solid lineup 1-9. They are just an overall better team when compared to Northview.

Preseason is preseason and things do change as the season goes on. Sometimes in those tournaments it might be #3 vs #3.

I think that it is also fair to say that teams improve as the season goes on, but don't forget - that is true for both teams.

Anonymous said:

Amat did well against those teams in playoffs, but preseason is preseason...if you haven't seen those teams since the glendora tournament, you can't say it would be the same...Northview alone, is a ton better than their second game of the season. 8 or 9 sophs on that team, they are better without a doubt than back in Feb. Other teams as well. This is no disrespect towards Amat at all, but preseason tournaments don't mean a thing, esp. when you face teams #3 or #4 pitchers etc...

Amat Still the One said:

Congrats to Northview! Job well done. I guess Amat's schedule wasn't so week after all. 6 of the teams Amat played are still alive in the 3rd round of playoffs: Northview, Crescenta Valley, Cal High, St. Mary's, Crespi, and St. Paul. Amat was combined 7-1-1 against these teams

Max Mercy said:

Kquenga, you are correct on both counts. Northview lost to Covina for the 2-A title in 1979 at what is now Angel Stadium. Back then it was Anaheim Stadium. Wouldn't it be something if they made it back this year and another SGV team -- Charter Oak -- was there to meet them. But both still have some work to do

sgvbaseballfan said:

only NV CIF championship was in 1971. Not quite sure if they have played in any others though. please correct me if i am mistaken.

SD has a tough match up against torrance, but at least they are at home. Also CO with Oaks Christian who has scored 26 runs in their first two games in CIF so should be fun. all valley teams are home in D4

kquenga said:

Yes. It's the same coach Quinley that won a lot of championships at Hollenbeck. He's winning a lot of league titles at Charter Oak now.
Keep it going CO & good luck to NV & SD also.

I was at Hollenbeck Park yesterday & it is still fun there.

CBaseball said:

Quinley did coach at Hollenbeck but I do not remember if he coached the Yankees. Lots of great action over at Hollenbeck this year.

PiusX said:

Is this the same Quinley that coached the Yankees at Covina Hollenbeck in the late 70's and early 80's. I miss that place. Brian Meyers, Discol's, McCrimon (coach and son's)

PiusX said:

Off topic, but while wasting time on the Internet I found poor Compton's 2007 Baseball campaign. They lost one game 38 - 4, but they made sure that was not a fluke when they lost another by 30 runs. What is the ERA of their staff. How do you come back to the field after those type of losses. They went 0 and 18 for the year. They are D1, of course.

Covinabaseballfan said:

First of all, I never mentioned anything about comparing coaching philosophies, or that high school rivalries are bad. Shelley, maybe you should read a post, rather than assume things that are not said, before you go ballistic. You seem to know everything about Covina - oh, and I won't name names either. LOL I have seen and talked to Northview's principal out there on the field - she's great - and a real sports fan. Unfortunately for Covina, our principal is not. It all starts at the top, and we haven't had what I would consider a good principal in years. I think I did say that Covina has had more than their share of "issues" did I not? AnyMouse, I do get automated messages from Covina regarding things happening at the school. Never anything regarding missed assignments, etc., which would be great. I have never had any problems with my sons, so I don't know about that. I take it upon myself to call a teacher if my son's grade slips from on A- to a B, and my calls have always been returned promptly. Parents do have to be involved and know what their kids are doing. Yes, it would be great to have such a system at Covina to inform us of that, but we don't. Good for Northview, but we have to deal with what we have, like it or not.

You will see our Principal at most (almost all) of our sporting events. Supporing her kids. She will rebuke the kids for mouthing off to the other fans and keep them in check.
I have received a recording on my cell phone saying my child has a test the following friday or turned in a incomplete homework assignment. Email is the best thing ever... I send out a email to a teacher and I receive a response by days end.
So proud my children are at Northview High School.

Northview not only has a tighter leash with the athletes but the entire student body as well...

I spoke with a friend of mine the other day who is a Northview parent, the usual came up in converstaion family, grades, athletics, coaching etc...

During our conversation he mentioned how suprised he was that Covina had so many issues with athletes and grades since the school district has a system set up to call the parents when a student misses an assignment, homework isnt turned in or they skip classes etc...

This caught me off guard since I had never received any calls from the district or school and I know my kid is far from an angel...

After a little research it seems that it isnt a district wide program, but a Northview program...

I have to e mail the teachers for updates between grade checks and pray for a timely response, good luck on that one and even then the info I receive isnt always something that I can help him correct since so much time has passed by...

Somebody please correct me if I am mistaken?

This explains quite a bit...

Good job Northview...

Shelley said:

Covinabaseballfan,

Let's not make light of this. There is a COMPLETE DISTINCTION between Northview and Covina when it comes to problems they have with their kids. Please, don't compare coaching philosophies between the two schools. So much goes on over at Covina (I won't name names) and it all slides..... If the same things happened over here at Northview those same athletes would be riding the pine. As far as the rivalries.....that's HS sports at it's finest.....gotta love it!

Covinabaseballfan said:

I agree with your comment about the "breed" of athletes at San Dimas and Bonita, but I'm sure they have their share of problems also. Don't like the negative comments about things that go on with athletes. Granted, Covina has had more than their share of "issues", but I know that Northview does as well whether they want to admit it or not. I think what the post meant was that certain schools bring out the worst in each other (players/parents) when they play. Call it rivalry or whatever.

Viking Fan! said:

San Dimas and Bonita get a totally different "breed" of athletes than Covina and Northview...call it demographics..whatever.....both teams do a hell of a job with what they have!

Anonymous said:

You usually see a class act from Bonita. Covina and Northview together - forget it. Or San Dimas and Northview, for that matter. Awesome game, however, I would have never thrown R.J. 2 fastballs right in a row. Bad call there, coach.

Congratulations to the Northview Vikings for their victory yesterday. As a parent I was very aware of the "attitude" that has been portrayed by some on this blog of the Northview players/Parents as being obnoxious and classless. I saw none of that at the field yesterday during our game. I saw two very evenly matched baseball teams play to the end. I saw two very good Coaching staff's execute, I saw one team get the respect that they had not received this season, and I saw another team prove that they have the heart to go on and play in Dodger Stadium. Congratulations to the Players and Parents on both sides of the fence. Good luck and we'll see you next year.

Who the heck is Billy Thompson. It was Bobby Thomson who hit the "Shot heard round the world."
That did sound like shocking end to a baseball game. I can remember when Amat won D-IV in 2002, the end was an empty feeling because of the way it happened -- tie game, bases loaded two outs in the eighth and Amat wins in when the first baseball drops a throw from third following a groundball. It just didn't seem like it was over, just like this Northview's big win.
Oh, yes Aram it is possible to write a story about a guy who won't talk to you. In fact, your Dodgers writer did that a few years ago when he wrote a feature story on Nomo. He just got Jim Tracy, the pitching coach and some other players to talk abou him.
