Hey someone checked me on my grammar and spelling.....thank you! I guess I'm not perfect!

Anyway, never wanted to be a HC so you can drop that angle. As for me being a moron, I have been called worse.........thank you for the compliment. As for being a hypocrite, that will never be me. The hypocrites are the people who get on this blog and talk about how they love these local schools, but then send there kids to Amat, SH, LA, CO, etc. I bet Grammar Police is one of these same people.

I pose a question to all the people who have a problem with what I'm saying: "If schools like Bassett, LP, BP, SV, etc are such great places, why are parents, from these communities, not sending their kids to these schools?" If someone can answer this question truthfully, I will be quiet on this issue.

Everyone knows what I am saying is the truth. Besides for the 4 main schools in the SGV, all the true talent is in the OC, IE, LA area, and SFV. It hurts to say that, but we all know it's the truth.

You guys keeping rooting for the little engine that could schools. While your doing that, people like myself, will watch my kids play for championships and get a quality education....... free of the idiots that occupy most of the SGV now.

mrman1, you are one angry moron. Must be one of those applicants that got rejected for the HC job.

"Instead of you guys constantly talking about how great these schools were, why don't you get on the front lines and help change the way these schools/communities are today. Become teachers, be coaches, mentor some of these kids, and reducate there ignorant parents" I quote Mrman1.

Speaking of education and ignorance, I think the above quote speaks for itself. Instead of putting down communities and lecturing people to better themselves, do yourself a favor and take a basic English class....it's not "there" it's the possessive pronoun "their" and its spelled re-educate and not "reducate"....what is that???hehehehe. Better yet take a sociology class, maybe you can help better humanity you big hypocrite.

That depends how big the home is.

Markham will never leave Bloomington again! He has too much fun scoring 130 points on schools like Jurupa Valley and Summitt. However, I don't think Markham and his group home kids could help Bassett.

New York said:

Bassett just needs coach Don Markham and some of his foster kids and they would be just fine.

To all the loyal Bassett/LP area lovers, this message is for you:

The remarks I made were not callous or cowardly, they were just truthful. No matter how you slice it, the schools in that area will not win another major championship in football again! All the talent left years ago or is going to the 4 major schools in the area. I will agree there have been some good coaches at Bassett, but they have all bailed when they realized how backwards the school and the area is.

The problem behind this is not the kids. As I stated yesterday, the kids are scrappy and hard nosed. However, the adults/parents in the area are THE REAL PROBLEM! Until there ignorant behinds stop clinging to this gang culture/non educated life style, no real athletes (football, soccer, baseball, etc) will want to come to any of those schools. Why would any parents whose kids has a chance to make it, send there kids to a crap holes like Bassett, LP, SV, BP, etc. I know some of these same bloggers who are talking all this smack have by passed one of these schools to send there kids to Amat! You might not say it, but we all know it's the truth.

Finally, the goal of high school athletics should be this: using it as a stepping stone to get to college. That is the ultimate goal. Have fun, win games, etc are all good, but the real goal should be the free ride, so your parents won't have to pay for college. Education is the key to rebuilding all these communities.........not winning some stupid league championship that no one will remember in 5 years. I lived in the SGV for over 20 years of life, went to school there, and have seen how most of the area has went straight to hell. I made a decision after college, if I stayed in the SGV, that none of my kids would go to a school that was full of drama, gangs, and was represented by bunch of uneducated ignorant adults! 90% of my buddies took the same stance and if they have stayed in the area, have taken there kids to the 4 major powers for a better education and better sports programs!

Instead of you guys constantly talking about how great these schools were, why don't you get on the front lines and help change the way these schools/communities are today. Become teachers, be coaches, mentor some of these kids, and reducate there ignorant parents. Maybe if you changed the culture of the community/school, there sports programs might improve. I do apologize about the soccer comment from earlier. I'm not saying they should only play soccer. But even some of the star soccer kids dont go to these schools, so what is that telling you!

Oh yeah, I didn't know about Lionel Manuel........he was a good WR. However, that was a long time ago.

NYGIANTS said:

I'll give you one name mrman1...Lionel Manuel. Graduated from Bassett in 1980 and has a championship ring while starting as a WR for the NY Giants under Coach Parcell. Hell he even held some reception record until Amani Toomer broke it some years ago.

mrman1,

I'm not a Bassett or LP fan, but I noticed you have an axe to grind whenever a blog is about Bassett or the local schools in the Hacienda-LP area? It seems like every time a blogger comes in to infuse some kind of hope or rally support for the area's programs which are obviously in some state of decline, you come in like a jackal in the night and sink your venomous teeth into its neck.

What motivates you to spew such callous and cowardly remarks? What kind of adult/parent would do that? unless perhaps you feel threatened by their mere existence. A football program is good for any school and their communities, whether they are in East LA, Long Beach, Baldwin Park or La Puente.

While soccer may have a place and future at the HS perhaps due to its popularity among its largely latino/hispanic community, it has become obvious that your vicious hatred, and bias towards this school's football program and geographics with your whiny comments at their attempts to resuscitate its program.... is nothing but racist.

You are in essense suggesting....Bassett kids are scrappy and only good enough to play soccer. Hey history has shown that whenever a decent coach has stuck around (Petingill/Ward/Smolin) they had enough scrappy kids to win championships. They just need to learn to keep successful coaches happy.

Mean Machine said:

mrman! I wrote that comment about the sports that Bassett should concentrate on because it affords the school the ability to tap into the "new" immigrant population that is hard working and clearly comes from a country that gives them an advantage in soccer. That was my point.

To take that platform as a way to minimize high school sports at it's base is rather childish and a bit arrogant. That's not a slam at you personally as much as an observation toward your assertion.

Covina is a good example of what can happen if the right pieces come together. I hope Bassett does improve if only to prove that team work and hard work makes players champions on the field and in life.

Best of luck to Bassett and Coach Ward..I'll stop by and give you an honest assessment of their talent and potential but the real test will be "EVERY DAY" that those kids "show up" and come together. Maybe it's time for the students of Bassett to stand up for themselves and "drop" the BS. Time to join a new team...the few the proud the educated....college bound so you are bound no more.

Good Luck

mrman1 said:

No matter what type of field Bassett has, here is the bottom line: THERE IS NO REAL TALENT LEFT IN THAT AREA! All the so called talent goes to the 4 top schools in the area. Even when this so called talent from the LP area goes to the top 4 schools, they play hard for 4 years, go to a JC, and then fall off the face of the earth. How many of these guys you people drool over, actually go on and star at a top D1 school or even go on and star in the NFL. There scrappy little kids who win games and league championships, but that is the extent of their football careers!

You people need to stop acting like this is the 70's or the 80's. Bassett and schools like it will play hard, but THEY WILL NEVER WIN ANOTHER C.I.F. CHAMPIONSHIP! As someone said, a few blogs ago: they need to concentrate on soccer and leave football to the real schools!

New York said:

AT,

That is too bad. Gillette seemed like a good guy. Whatever happened to guys like Dick Sheehan and Don Legro(Sierra Vista)? Sheehan took Covina to a title and Legro took SV to the semis as well as groomed the Valley's all-time rushing leader, Oscar Intariano.

All you guys are funny, imagine Bassett High School as a Bishop Amat or a Los Altos or any other power house football program, you dads that think your son's the best player would be lining up to place them in Bassett. The problem is just the reputation it has but think of Long Beach Poly the last time I checked that's a bad area filled with gangs but if they came knocking on the door to take your child to play you would. The funny thing is that things change and Champions fall I'll be laughing ONE day when Bassett High School becomes a power house and everyone wants to play there, just think everyone is wondering why they have a million dollar field and your high school doesn't I would say that's a first step in the right direction.

Ward coached at Monrovia during some very down years immediately before Garrison. He went to Basset in 1993 and followed that as D-Coordinator at Duarte for a bit. Duarte had at least one good season when he was there. In fairness to Ward's time at Monrovia, the program was already in decline when he took over but it was very bleak when we left.

I wonder if Steve Gillette will be the Offensive Coordinator.

Go Leon!!!! said:

Being a Bassett Alum (class of 69??) and former HC coach, Ward knows how to pull the strings and do whatever it might take to get the job done. Hopefully, he'll have the admininstration's back and the community's support to pull off what it seems to be to most people..... a miracle, especially if he lasts more than 2 years.

Give the guy a good compensation package and a bonus if he wins games, give him whatever tools he needs to be successful, try to convert some of those mean cholos/crips into lean mean football players and you might have something.

He's got a nice stadium to start with, now all he needs are just bad ass players who wants to knock some heads off.

Will Ward get hazardous duty pay?

??? said:

Well, guess they couldn't get any on campus guys to apply so they had to settle. Not a surprise. If he last more than 3 years, that in itself will be an accomplishment.

Leon Ward has coached at Bassett, Mayfair and Monrovia. He was most recently the frosh coach at Arroyo two years ago. He's currently the game organizer for the Hall of Fame Game, which guess what? Just so happens to be at Bassett this year. Could it have worked out any more perfect?
