Gary Brown says hello from Boston ...
Diamond Bar's stud SS/OF just called from Boston where he worked out today at Fenway Park for the Red Sox. He's hoping to sneak into the first round of Thursday's MLB draft. He won't last past the first few rounds. By the way, he struck out SIX TIMES in THREE SEASONS!!! He's committed to Cal State Fullerton, but could sign if the que$o is right. Brown said he can't get a flight out of Boston until tomorrow because of the weather. He hit .612 this season!!!
"I couldn't quite get one over the monster, but ...," Brown said.

Gary should have taken the money and went to the minors immediatley. Danny Garcia of Nogales did it. Gary seems to me like he was a few step above Garcia in the talent level overall. If he is that good he would have tore up single A and advanced rapidly thru the minors...Steve Sax gets called up from Double A and his game does resembles that of Brown. Altho Brown I do not think has a problem making the throw from second to first.
And now a HUGE Congratulations to Cal State Fullerton - who will also be on the road to the College World Series. Unbelievable!!
That is sooo awesome! Good job to Dave Serrano and his team. We were at a baseball game (where else) but were getting updates - heard that was unbelievable when they reversed that call at first. But they hung in there and now are World Series bound. Hopefully Fullerton will be after tonight as well.
ANTEATERS WIN !!!
ANTEATERS WIN !!!
Justice is served and UCI scores in the bottom of the 9th to send the Anteaters to the College World Series for the first time in school history.
Side note: UCI just revived the mens baseball team 6 or 7 years ago after being a Title IX casualty and having the program cut to help balance scholarships between men and women
Guarantees 2 SoCal teams in the CWS !!!
UC Irvine just got SCREWED in the Super Regional AT Wichita vs Witcita St.. Wit ha 2-0 lead UCI recorded an out on a great stretch at first base and the replays showed it was a great call. The Witchita coach and fans went beserk and the home plate umpire overuled the call!!! Witcita St went on to score 2 runs and extend a game that should have been over.
I hope karma rules and UCI goes on to win the game
Yes, it is addicting. I do get a lot of info. on here, which he always wants to know, or course! Titan Central is great for Fullerton info. also. I remember Lassalette and Majors well - went to Edgewood also. You're right about the "flush" theory, as they had a little toilet in the dugout - I'm sure everyone who watched those games remembers. "Over it" was was they said as they flushed away their bad at-bat, error, or whatever negative things that it was. He is all about turning every negative into a positive. Really awesome guy. The mental part of baseball is huge. Thanks - we are enjoying it all!
Also watching the Titans beat the Bruins (hope I don't jinx 'em).
Just an old competitor from pre-Edgewood baseball, and got to know Lasselette and Major a bit later. Also a Pirate fan, so the name came up in conversation often back then.
I follow the kids in the valley and B. hit some deep jumpers against our Lancers in the Christmas Tournament, so he earned some respect on the hardwood too.
I've heard the legend of Ravizza. Hendrickson(Dodgers) and Weaver(Angels) swear by him. I like the "next pitch" battle cry. I've heard someone say he uses "the flush" too. Amazing what the mind can do.
Mike's probably right, best to stay off - but it is addicting and sometimes even enjoyable and useful. Best of luck to the kids - this is such a fun time.
Dan Haren should be All-Star teamates with last years All Star MVP Mike Young (like Haren, also an Amat graduate). Young went to UCSB for 3 years also. Young's HS teamate Mike Lamb played 4 years at CSUF and is now with the Astros.
hhhmmmm...3 in MLB...not bad.
Big time college baseball is as good a preparation for the big leagues as gettng drafted and playing instructional, rookie ball, then low-A ball for a few years. Plus you get the college life, get to be BMOC, and progress towards your degree.
GB will do the SGV proud.
Joe Amat -- Sorry, it's Mike's wife. He doesn't go on these board and hates when I do! LOL Listening to the Greenjackets right now on the internet with the Fullerton game on ESPN - what a life! But we are enjoying it and still keeping busy with our younger son. Weston and Dyche are great players. Dyche was moved up to San Jose (High A), and in his 2nd game there ruptured his spleen diving for a ball. So, unfortunately, that ends his season this year. Weston hasn't been playing the past few games - a hurt wrist or something, but I don't think it's serious. Their team is in first place in their Division with only about 7 games left in the first half. Regarding that awesome 2004 Championship, the consensus has been that it was the team's sports psychologist who turned the team around. His motto for the team - "Next Pitch" is even inscribed on their rings - Dr. Ken Ravizza. He works with pro teams and teaches at Fullerton. So, now that I will have to tell Mike I was on here, who should I say was asking for him?
Here is a prediction: Dan Haren will be the starter for the American League. He was nails today and has been the most consistent pitcher in baseball. He also went to college for four years. Its all possible. Its up to the individual to make it happen. Hard Work will always pay off.
Mike?,
He'll have the ring, the memories and his degree forever. Nothin' wrong with that at all! What a great story in 2004, from about .500 mid-season to an NCAA Championship. What do you attribute to that turnaround?
Nice to see he's playing with a couple of other old SGV players in Weston (Glendora) and Dyche(Western Christian).
How are those guys doing?
Good luck to all - it's a long journey. Enjoy the trip!
Yeah, I like how all you dip shits made a prediction about Brown and showed how little you truly know about baseball and its draft. Stick to licking envelopes and leave the predictions to the real experts.
You're exactly right. My son plays for the Giants, but his A-ball team is the Augusta Greenjackets. His checks, however, say San Francisco Giants on them. When he went to cash one of his first checks, the teller said, "You work for the Giants? What do you do?" LOL And then he told her he played for them. She looked confused - don't think she understood either!!!
Chuckie is getting back to 100% and I would imagine will start throwing a little pretty soon. My son went to Cal State Fullerton and went to the College World Series twice - one of them being in 2004 when they won it all. Loved it there. Aside from getting drafted out of Fullerton, he is close to getting his degree as well. I think we all know the odds of how many players actually end up making it to the major leagues. At least he has most of his education out of the way (and the Giants will pay for the rest) - big factor that some kids just don't think about.
Actually, Tiffany is in the pros. The minor leagues are the pros, or don't you get that concept What Can You Say. If Brown winds up at Fullerton, he will definitely get the opportunity to make the big leap. Look at the major league rosters. Fullerton has 11 of its former players in MLB, which ranks right up there with any program in the country, and a lot of those guys were drafted in the later rounds of the draft. Mark Kotsay is a perfect example. He walked on to Cal State Fullerton and three years later was one of the top collegiate players in the country, and has been a very servicable major leaguer.
Brown, if he decides to go to Fullerton, will definitely get the coaching to make the leap. It will be up to him.
Aram,
Lets give the bloggers some clarity on the draft and how it works. One, very excited for GB and Diamond Bar, but a couple myths do exist...One, a player that goes to Boston PAYS his way there for the workout...An invite is given, but can't be paid for by the team, so he paid to go there. Two, he was never a close to a first round guy...I work closely with some scouts and he just wasn't that kind of guy to go that high. Amazing speed, but has a lot to work on (nothing to be upset or reply to about). He will have his work cut out at Fullerton, so if he's tomorrow's dream as you put it, he'll be better prepared at Fullerton to make that jump.
Anonymous,
He will see allot better pitching then he seen in HS........college ball allot different........minors even more difficult.....pros fuggetaboutit!.......Most do not make it.......where is the great Chuck Tiffany?....he is not getting to pros anytime soon......Gary could not carry chuckies jock at the HS level..sorry not going to happen.,
If I hear about one more player getting a "full ride", especially at Fullerton, I'm going to scream. Division I schools have only 11.7 baseball scholarships to give per year, and to get more players they give partials. Some more than others, but not full rides. Sounds good, though!
What Can You Say, what are you talking about? MLB is full of guys who were drafted after the 10th round out of high school, who went on to play D-I baseball and were top 10 picks the second-time around and then went on to have productive major league careers. The list is almost endless.
Brown has the potential to be a a three-time all-american for Fullerton, and if does that, he could play his way into a top-10 overall pick and a seven-figure signing bonus.
ah,...my bad....26th pick, in the 12th round.... And to "What can you say"---He's going to a premier college baseball program on a full ride....where he'll have a chance to grow as a player and get even better, besides how many SGV kids went straight from high school in this draft? Going in the 12th round from a nationwide draft is no joke......but college maybe the better choice for him now (more $$$ if he blossoms), we'll see.
I guess he is not what everyone is making him out to be if he was overlooked that much... No bigs in his future but at least he got the college paid for. something is better than nothing.
Uh actually it was the 12th, the 390th round to Oakland. First non-college guy the A's have taken in recent year. The money ball era doesn't allow for HS kids to be drafted, but they made an exception for GB.
GB went in the 26th rd to Oakland........fughedaboutit, he's going to Cal St Disneyland! He'll do just fine....
Actually, the wait would only have to be three years. Players who enroll in a four-year school are eligible for the draft after their enrolling class reaches junior status. He could even play his way into a top 10 overall pick. It has happened before. Playing for Fullerton is pretty good consolation prize. Go prove 'em wrong Gary and score three CWS title rings
Gary,
If you read these threads I just want to say Congrats for even being looked at this early in your life by the pro's and for your acceptance over at CSUF...
Keep your chin up, stay healthy, play hard, get your degree and go in the first round 4 years from now...
Believe me 4 years will go by in the blink of an eye so enjoy and make the most of it...
Best of Luck to You,
AnyMouse...
Nope, he didn't get taken today. He took it pretty well and going to CSUF isn't a bad consolation. There was a speedster taken early that Brown should have gone ahead of, but hey.
I think its safe to say Gary Brown is headed to CSUF next year! I didn't see his name come across that ticker through the first 5 rounds....nor any other SGV high school player-straight out of high school that is....
Has Gary been drafted yet? and if he has what round??? and what number pick???
No offense to Gary at all he is a really good kid and player, but the person u should be talking about is Daniel Moskos who was just drafted #4 overall to the Pirates, He is a DAMIEN Alum and all american at clemson, this kid is for real and a great kid who went to damien and graduated from there and lives in alta loma and will proabbly get least a $2 mil bonus
I just got off the phone with Gary. The MLB teams he talked to told him slim chance at first the round, but probably soon after. Whether he goes to CSUF or goes pro, this kid is going to realize a dream tomorrow. By the way, the draft is being televised on ESPN at 11 a.m. ... now you've got a reason to watch!
Gary Brown had a big night for the south team going 3-4 with a triple and double. In addition he stole 3rd base and came home on a foul popup to the 2nd baseman who did not realize Brown's speed. Brown is listed has the fastest player in the upcoming draft and teams love speed. I wish the dodgers
would draft Brown who could take Pierre place in CF. P Brett Miller started the game for the south and pitched 2 scoreless innings striking out 3. SS Richie Jimenez made 3 fine plays at ss. The score after 7 innings was 12-3 South.
If its big money he's looking at with the signing bonus, he's gone.....he's a smart kid, he'll do whats best for his family and tuck away $$$ for college if he doens't make it to the bigs.....
I just hope he has the dilemma, meaning he's taken first round. It's hard to turn down the cash when it's on the table.
Go to school, CSUF is a great school to play baseball for. The minors and majors are a dream and only so many get the brass ring. Lots depend on how financially the family is, and if it is not in good shape, take the money for that purpose and that is honorable. If the family is in ok shape with money then a full ride college scholorship is a great thing to have. Depending on how good a student Gary is and can he hang with the studies and balance baseball at the same time. The higher you go in the draft the more the money but if we are talking $125,000 to $150,000 that is not much but if we are talking $500,000 to one million dollars then sign save for college and take a shot at that brass ring...I dont know how long if at all it will take GB to get to the majors and injuries in the Minors play a big part if you ever get to the Show. See CO's Chuck Tiffany (rotator cup surgery) Gregory Burns(Walnut) having a tough time down there. Again it comes down to Money 1st round money vs 5th round money..CSUF baseball..if you breeze thru that and are great there then your chances of getting to MLB and a higher round draft pick is awaiting GB. Money and draft status are the key here. This young man definitley has the tools but so do lots of others.. tough to make the majors but not impossible. College education lasts a lifetime.
College packages are pretty much standard in player contracts now. The MLB team sets aside a certain amount of money for you to use for education purposes only.
take the money and run gary,....save $100,000 of the signing bonus and go to school later if the bigs dont work out.....either way, you come out a winner from DB......way to represent bro!
I hope to see you in school, money comes and goes, the college experience only once.
The best of luck
I would have to agree. Even with the bad year they had, they look pretty close to getting to Omaha AGAIN! I'll second that - "Go Titans!"
I'm a little selfish. I hope he falls a bit and winds up on the Road to Omaha - Fullerton.
Go Titans
gary brown is the man.
Aram, who from this area (high school and college) do you think may get picked up this week?
This kid is the best player in the area period.I wish him the best of luck.
