Opening East practice (WOW!) ...

| | Comments (190) |

The East held its first practice on Friday evening at Baldwin Park HS. Nice new stadium, by the way. First off, the best scene had to be the two first moms of SGV quarterbacks - Mrs. McDonough and Mrs. Mendrun - talking in the stands. About the action. It was a pretty well attended session in terms of players and fans, including one loyal blogger who will hopefully share his thoughts below. Most of the players were there. Notably absent were Glendora's Jordan Edmond (at a national track meet) and West Covina's William Wallace (supposedly a communication mix up). Both 1st Team All-Area standouts are expected to be back at practice soon. Damien WR Travis Eschardies was there, but a bulging disc in his back might keep him out of the game. The players were only in shoulder pads and helmets, but that didn't stop the action from being good. McDonough stole the show with some great throws and some even better runs. After one of his runs and a good gang tackle by the defense, McD bounced up and yelled "You can hit this quarterback!" It had to be the line of the night. After another good run, he yelled "That's 15 yards right there." It was truly a treat to see Mendrun and McDonough throw to guys like Jon Joe and Michael Johnson. Then to see Jamal James line-up at corner against Johnson was awesome. And then there was Bonita's Phillip Aguayo. Talk about one fluid receiver. Very impressive. But just as you tried to watch the WR/DB matchups, which included Philip Chase covering Aaron Harris (two great athletes), your attention was taken away by the line drills. First off, let me say that Jesse Cervantes from Amat is an animal. Sam Lavea and Ralph Diaz were also amazing to see in speed rushing drills. This team is absolutely loaded. Any questions one might have about eastside talent can be quickly answered by watching these guys get after it. It was a blast to watch all the rivals team up. BP and East coach James Heggins told me they are planning for a game-like (full pads) scrimmage on Saturday, June 30. There will probably be a snack bar and some music to go along with the game-like action. Should be a fun day and a great opportunity for fans to get a look at the talent.

People are going to see matchups and just see the ball and players fy around. But no to the most masculine of all blogers this is just a practice.

Football is all about improving and testing out your skills. Don't go but please telling everyone it's worthless is small of you. But then again I did appreciate the information about the matchups....and that's all it was.

Feel better now.

Their's a passing league game at South Hills. Are they playing a real game? and when I say real game are their lineman involve? Are they both wearing pads and ready to hit someone. If not then its just another practice for all the squads present. Everybody knows passing league is totally different from football. In some case its just not real football. Dont get me wrong the athletes show up to play. But playing tag and actually hitting somone are completely different. When you have a 6 foot 4 lineman in front of you trying rampage the QB. I believe its quite different. Bottom line is, football is only football with pads on. Have fun watching two hand touch, let me know if any of these school plays in a real game then maybe it will be worth watching.

Mud,

Your actually the first person to ask about the orgin of the moniker "AnyMouse"...

It is actually derived from Naval Aviation safety programs, a Naval Aviator could air a concern by submitting an article in lets say "Approach magazine" or the "Tailhook" by using the commentary section that was titled "AnyMouse". In turn the aviator could stay anonymous and avoid any potential backlash from superior officers for what could be termed "Whistle blowing" or even from an inflight screw up that needs to be aired but if not done anonymously could be career suicide...

It actually has quite a history behind it and saved many a life, here is a link if your interested...

Lakers signing Walton was good, doesn't get them over the top, but a good sign.

Anyone tired of Mike The Clone on here...I like his hunger and passion for SGV sports, but the Jim Rome like postings getting tired.

Would like to know how some local teams did at Bonita Tournament, will someone post?

It must be a dead time of year for prep sports when hall of fame game smack talking is the the topic of the day.

Does anyone care that Ms. McD and Ms. Menderin were talking in the bleachers?

Page 3 of the Tribune sports sure does let all the men know where in the area they can go to get their rocks off...would be nice to read some more prep sports instead of "Deja Vu" specials.

Will "Anymouse" let us know where he or she got that name? Just curious.

The ref remarked that "Time had expired!" so no catch. The the class bunch started to yell that the ref should have been in "Better Position" These Amat Loudmouths keep it up for a couple of minutes with the ref TRYING to be POLITE and mentioning it was a hot day. time had expired, the catch good but time had expired....opps again the Amat rowdies started in again...get better position...blah balh blahh... "IT WAS NO WHERE GOOOOOD!!!! ARE YOU CRAZY THAT WAS NOT A CATCH!!!! (This coming from Dad's sitting in yawn chairs 20 yards from the line with no possible angle on the play! And in the past from time to time, I have respected that unfortunately there have been others that may have falsely accused you of being a bigot and racist for which I pray you are not Sir. But I cannot and will not allow myself to stand actually sit here and be indifferent to what I would consider to be a sin. I agree I have no right to presume you are guilty of something that you may believe is not offensive and rude so I will not pass judgment on you for your comments except that I ask could you please be more tolerant of others selfishly myself because I am angry and hurt by your response. I also request that you please do not retaliate and sound defensive and offended by my remarks because I am truly not trying to insult and upset you. I am just appealing to you if you have declared yourself or Aram has anointed you the leader of “ARAM TOLEGIAN on Prep Sports…and life” Blog and I may be entirely wrong because you seem to be a humble man that realizes you are earthly so please again my remarks should not be regarded as mean and sarcastic because I do appreciate your attempts to confront and deal with others in order to maintain and uphold an expectation and standard in this forum and I thank you for those noble acts. I am just saying in the future could you please just be more conscious of and sensitive to that you too should keep yourself more accountable to those same principles but only if you feel you did make a poor choice in articulating yourself because if not may the Lord have mercy on your soul. Truthfully, in my opinion, again just my point of view, otherwise you would be no better than the others and hate is a strong word but I would hate to accuse you of being a hypocrite. My sense of you my brother is that you are an ethical and moral man so only if your free will could agree with my sentiments like you I just ask there be peace and good will among ALL men especially our LORD thy God! I will also tell you at the same time remembering today is the Sabbath Day and keeping it holy, when I attend today’s church service I will make a special request we pray to our Lord and Jesus Christ begging for forgiveness of your sin and from there Michael I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers…

Bluorca which Covina game or Glendora game did you see. Or as usual are you talking out of your fundio.

As far as Redlands being very good...maybe Glendora was as usual an up and down team last year and laid down. Great against Chino and aweful against Damien. This year Glendora will be the same team they always are under Pasy...scrappy when they should be very good. No QB means more smoke and mirrors for the Bagpipers...no runnning game means the smoke has clearded and the mirror is cracked.

Either way if Redlands was the team that is being touted they would ahve beaten Norco. Sometimes some teams have your number...like the patriots having Indy's. Congrats on the win against Covina. As far as anyone shutting down Mc D....last time I checked you still have to play the game...and since it didn't happen...quess what...it's just another way of chipping away at Covina's great run.

Now only if Bishop Amat and Glendora could.

Bluorca as always you're blowing it out with both hands. What a surprise!

bluorca said:

I was surprised that Redlands lost to Norco as well. But then again Norco became the eventual champs and Redlands had an awful habit of committing bad turnovers in the most untimely manner leading to some close games that should not have been so close.

I gotta soft spot for Walker's Terriers because he's had some great teams in the past but it has always seemed like his teams always find a way to lose at the worst possible time. Redlands is all that is left of the once mighty Citrus Belt and they take football very seriously over there.

Knowing that Glendora beat Covina, and knowing what Redlands did to Glendora, I believe Redlands would have stopped McD n. Co. cold. And this has nothing to do with height (That song was hilarious Mr. Clone!!!) or athletic ability of one player but about the awesome defense that Redlands had last year. Covina fans may disagree but this may be because they did not face any teams resembling Redlands. Oak Park was by far, Covina's toughest opponent (Besides the TARTANS of course!)but Oak Park still remains a mystery to me but most of their opponents were 2+ games under .500 and 2 of them did not win a game the entire season. It's no wonder Oak Park got smoked by Oak Christian 2x.

But back to SGV football, I'm pretty sure Glendora is going to beat Covina for the 4th straight year. Teams only get better from this point on!

Happy Canada Day All! hehe!

Hey it's all good and not a slight to anyone, even Bluorca. But here's alist of "They would get smoked games/matchups"

Boston College vs Miami...Flutie...a short undersized, over acheiving QB engineers one of the greatest victories in college football history!

Eric Bemeiny, Amat grad..too short. Won't make it at the next level. Never start at Division I...and if he did , "He'll never make it to the NFL"....couple of years later...you know the rest of the story.

Opps Doug Flutie again...getting chewed out on Monday Night Football by Mike Ditka and essentially proving "Small guiys don't belong in the NFL"...go back to Canada!!!...fast forward and a couple of Grey Cups later and ...opps...Flutie is one "Miracle Pass" (illegal by the way) away from leading the Buffalo Bills to the Super Bowl against that other "can't make it" QB led Rams team...what was his name..2 Time NFL Player of the Year...I mean NFL MVP...Curt Warner.

Rocky Blier...ect,. ect, ect....How would Mike McD done against Redlands? I remember seeing St. Paul against that great Loyola team and seeing Richie Valenzuela do his thing...
I don't know but I do remember seeing a skinny kid named Jim Kelly beat a Penn State team and start a dynasty at Miami.

In sports..."ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE...ANYTHING"....

bluorca,

Mcd vs. Redlands?

Is this intended to be 1 person against a team or were you refering to Covina vs Redlands?

No doubt, Redlands would man handle the Colts with out a problem. Glendora BEAT the Colts 3 years straight, and after seeing the Glendora vs. Redlands game in the CIF playoffs last season, I have no question Redlands would destroy the Colts. I believe the Colts were a great team last year, but Redlands is really in a different universe. Just watching Redlands doing their pre-game warmup, I knew Glendora was in for a whopping. Redlands was by far the best team Glendora faced ALL SEASON and Glendora had faced many of the top teams in their respective leagues in SGV. Redlands is extremely well coached, great QB, great D and more athlecticism on one team than many leauges combined. Truly loaded...really surprised they didn't go all the way to win the big prize!

Mike said:

Bluorca,

That's an interesting question you pose. Those kids were huge. I mean they were all corn fed, biscuit eating, five gallons of milk a day types.

I remember walking up to the gates out there that night and as I usually do walked over to watch their walk through and warm ups. I was saying to myself this is going to get ugly. I'm 6'2 and their O-Line and D-line towered over me.

Could Covina have beaten that Redlands team... probably not and I say that with all do respect to Covina. The match ups just were there. I will say this though, the score would have been close and Redlands first team would have been in the whole game unlike they were against us.

Now when it comes to McD. I know their head coach Jim Walker and I know he doesn’t go into any game unprepared. Jim is one of those old school guys that would have one guy designated to shadow McD and put the hurt on him whenever possible. Whether they could contain him humm…I’d say that’s a fifty-fifty. You sure weren’t going to see him barrel over any of those Redlands kids like you saw in the video Aram has posted. It would have been something to see him playing against Redlands.

Chief...

My good friend I have to agree with my fellow "Bagpiper" honks about our Covina games. So don't take this other than a nice polite smack to you and with the utmost respect. I just have to say it.........SCOREBOARD BABY GOOD NIGHT NOW!

Hey AnyMouse,

First, 3 straight "shoulda's" sounds like a trend to me...that you guys just couldn't beat Glendora. Last year we did score 3 TD's in the first Q but don't think they were on Turnovers. The first turnover was at the start of the 2nd quarter when Beckwith pick of a pass from...uh...
??? who was it??? Oh yea, Mighty McD!! I'll give you guys the 2nd quarter, cause you dominated it, but it was 21-14 at half. In the second half you had all your guns and so did we. What happend? We not only held you, but outscored you 7-0 in the most important 2 quarters. Outplayed us? No freakin' way. Was McD a stud? absolutely he was, both ways too, but sitting the first quarter may have kept him fresher for the second half. We got out of the gate (with some help? maybe), you stole the MO, but the Tartans adjusted and won going away. Scoreboard and good night already! (oh yea...at your turf to boot)

Btw it has been 3 years, not 2 years...

The year before we had a huge lead going into the 4th qtr and lost it, thats what happens when a DII school plays a DIX school...

Should have beat them all 3 years and on paper they are all losses but the truth of the matter is that Covina owned Glendora during all 3 of those years, we know it and so does Glendors (Although they will never admit it)...

Whooo Go Tarten...you are stepping into waters that are probably too deep for you...You are right McD never beat you...but he did lead a rally that came back from I think 4 scores down late in the second half two years ago.only to run out of time and lose by six..and last year he was benched for the first quarter when you guys scored 21 points....So now you got me started (sorry clone but your boy asked for it) Glendora football has not been relevant for over a decade. Lets be serious I did'nt even know you guys had a football program till a couple of years ago. I mean the last time Glendora football won a championship niether you or I were even alive.

Next point even your own people dont like what you are saying...and if McD is so over rated why dont you ask your own coach if would have loved to have McD playing Qb for him....Wait let me answer that for you...of course glendora would have loved to have him.

Glendora is now known for one thing (not even your basketball team) harassing police.

Its ridiculous how someone called her to discuss the situation then posted her remarks. What a joke.

Hey, I just read, evaluate and respond. Legend posted "With comments like that you make it that much easier to not like Glendora". While I'm not a psychotherapist or a wordsmith, any reasonable person would assume by reading the legend post, he dislikes the community of Glendora, and the Go Tartan senseless comment only added fuel to legends dislike of the community. Hey, we all have our opinions and dislikes, I hate LA. But I'm not afraid to say it.

Believe me, I won't lose any sleep.

The last great JAA program ever was the Temple City program back in the 70's 80's. That sucker was a well oiled machine pumping out talent and championships like water. I once heard Hitchcock say that I don't care how many game those kid's win down there by the time I get them I would like to see them fundamentally sound.
The guys coaching JAA today have nothing on those guys and couldn't even hold their water.

Trojan Dad said:

BEST...actually I did see that Diamond Ranch baller. YES he is for real and YES he is the best Safety in the SGV. Fresno State is lucky to have him. Best of luck.

I did also see the way he jaws at players even when they run for 25 yards up field. He's probably telling them "great run". lol I also seen him telling the corner on a couple of McD runs of 35 yards..."Where's my corner???!!!". THAT surprised me more than his talent. Why is he asking for the corner when on that play the corner has outside contain and your boy is suppose to come up and stuff the play. I played safety, not in the same galaxy as your baller, but nonetheless it's the SAFETY's responsibility to stop the runner once he turns the corner.

But he's very good. Kind of reminds me of Roy Williams-like of the Dallas Cowboys. But remember the word on Roy is he can't guard any receiver 1 on 1. In other words...playing safety is more than running your mouth and making it look easy. I think with his attitude he might be converted to corner, especially with that speed. I wish he would play corner at practice and show that he is a lock down defender as well. That's more valuable than being a skinny, by DIV I and NFL standards, safety. But hey what do I know. Maybe I'll see him do just that in 1 on 1 passing drills. Best of luck and stay healthy.

I’m sure this will ruffle some feathers and I say this having attended my share of game prep meetings, film study, and practices. Granted this is a showcase situation, but still personally it’s not my style to sit through a coach’s practice.

As far as coaching at Bassett...yeah if my brother Beto wants to we'll apply.(Probably Freshmen..it's more fun) I know we're better than having no one there as Coach Ward said last week. Anyway I already called so stay tuned.

It's the end of McD's high school career and all the drama has been played out with Mike..so I didn't see the point of Mike's "lecture/advice" to McD and said so. Maybe Mike the Clone forgot McD's mother is still alive and has given more than enough information as to Mike's "positive" progress. Anymore than that was exactly like other's said..it was piling on by Mike the Clone. He likes to do that from time to time. Maybe Mike should show up to practice and tell McD's mother in person all the "advice" he wants to share with the blog directly to her.

Everything else I've written is solid for the most part. (Mean Machine Reviews of South Hills, West Covina, Bishop Amat,Damien, the All Star practice and a 4 way passing event at Bonita) Check the "skinnies" they are on point and positive. As far as the "clinics and stud" comments what are you going to do...?

Dan...yup he's a class guy and a great West Covina Fan. Best of luck.

Randy...what was the score? LA vs NY? Going to see your DB team someday. How's the new coach? And more importantly how's your boy doing? And YES I owe you pizza...come to a ALL STAR practice and we'll chow down...guess I'm having that pizza party after all, lol! How does Friday sound?

Mr. Foss...great to see you again. I finally get to see your son play. I missed him against Damien. Next time the polliseeds are on me. Bring Mr. Castaneda with you, also a very nice guy. Still would have liked to see Matt in the QB mix here.

Scouts...what is your point? I stated mine. End of story.

Bloggers let it all end tonight instead of the "Your kid quit sports they love because of father's like you" comments. Last I checked all four still play the sports they love and are respected by their peers and coaches still. Always about my kids...how cowardly. Again. As far as those elusive DI scholarships Mike...no need to "lecture" my kid.... he's going to USC for FREE!!!!...did I mention that? lol

Have fun MIKE and see you at practice if you ever show up. How you going to treat a friend like that?

About the DR guys ...

Terrance Dennis came up and smacked some running back and the team erupted. It was a nice hit. The guy made a move on someone and shook him, but TD was there to make sure the play went no further.

I'm impressed with Benson. On one play he underestimated Mendrun's moves and Mendrun put a shake on him and was gone during a keep. But two plays later, the same thing happened and Benson wasn't fooled at all and easily made the play. He's really impressed me because I didn't hear too much about him. He's got LB/SS versatility.

Just because Mike the Clone and others do not agree with you. There in no need to get into name calling. I thought you had more class then that. As it is said on this blog and others. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. With all of the knowlege you think you have. You should start up your own football camps or better yet coaching clinics. The reason some kids quit the game they love is because of their fathers if you know what I mean. These are young men in school not pros. This is just high school football not this is your life. Good luck to all of the local high school fb programs in the area and should the best team win. We all know of the talent that McD has. If you are the stud you think you are the go prove it at Bassett. They need a man like you. This i'm sure will get your dander up just like Mike the Clone has done.

NIIIIIIICE I AM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike Fan but only if it doesn't bring out the nonsense said:

Every team has "the man" as in Peyton Manning, Joe Montana, Dick Butkis, Ray Lewis, Lawrence Taylor ect, ect, ect. To think otherwise is not being honest.

You need to relax a.j. the term "the man" was not meant to slight ANY other player (and I said so), especially those that sat on the sidelines during 11 on 11. This ain't Charter Oak anymore and there are alot of "pyschos" out there now. Maybe you'll be "the man" sometime again but my guess is you just got your feelings hurt. You know what I meant and if you didn't you're not the LB I thought you were. I've seen Mike play LB and YES he's better than most. FB/LBs are a dime a dozen while QB/LBs are something special don't you agree? 2 time Player of the Year is quite the accomplishment....it must be a mistake right?

Everyone loves to hate on Mike but 50 Touch Downs is incredible. I saw Damien give your team 2 ass whoopings in a row. At your house and at Damien's. Maybe if Charter Oak had a "man in the middle" Damien wouldn't have made you guys look like a JV team and made your QB Carreon change positions. YOU GUYS LOOKED AWEFUL BOTH NIGHTS.

You're a good player on both offense and defense and I've said so before on several occassions but like in life there is always someone better. That's the point of ALL STAR games. We don't just get to see "school studs" we get to see STUDS vs STUDS. I watched you and enjoyed your play at practice. Don't be a hater. The funny thing is people act like their kids are saints and role models...really? Do tell...where are these so called "saints" going to school? Notre Dame, Cal, Stanford, Brown, USC, UC Irvine...stop me when I guess right. Next time someone talks football please stop with the "example to our youth" nonsense. Please....and Ron Cuccia...we got drunk at my house, broke into the Mayan Theatre (he was breathing so hard we got busted and got thrown out!), almost started a fight in Hollywood, and had to be ...oh nevermind ...we were just kids and he went to an Ivy League school and NOW helps kids learn to throw the ball effectively. Lucky for Ron blogging wasn't around...and lucky for a couple of Mike's "moral police officers" as well. Mike the Clone you are an obnoxious ass and a bully of sorts now God only knows all the sh^T you did during your playing days!

See I appreciate Mike McD for his talent, which is spectacular in my opinion. I also hope his talent is a way for him to succeed in life. Not improve his life because I don't know his life and like most neither do you. But if he becomes nothing more than a great high school QB that's more than 99.9% of the bloggers ever were. Plus I like his mom's love for her son. I admire her for being a single mom and dealing with the nonsense. Leave it at that or be man enough to leave your name.

Signed: Mike Fan but only if it doesn't bring out the haters/nonsense. And you know who you are.

I'll stop talking about McD because it ultimately brings things down. Besides Mike's game speaks for itself.

And I thought it was painless to just talk football.

He never got the chance because of grades ala McD and went on to play for East LA college...ala McD and Citrus....well nothing ever became of Holenbeck just to see him later in the streets and drug addicted...very sad that we looked up to this player as one of the gods of Wilson HS football but it is a shame what can happen. McD going to Citrus reminds me of Rick Holenbeck's story only because there are a lot of similarities. Tough as nails but did not handle himself off the field as well. Real Straight Talk said:

It truly amazes me how some bloggers only talk or continue to talk about how good Mike Mcd is on a football field. I am sure this kid knows he's a good football player, but great now way.

Continuing to speak only of performance has really done this kid a disservice! The scouts didn’t miss anything. He could play D1, D2, D3 and his size is over come by his abilities.

START to take the spoon out of this kid mouth and teach him to present the complete package...

As a comparison only, two Covina stars are Tyler Pill and Mike Mcd. Is Tyler a better athlete than Mcd at his given sport? Probably not! However which athlete is working on representing and marketing the complete package? Pretty simple answer here.

Scouts do their homework because getting a kid accepted at a college is no picnic!

Mr. Mike Mcd, I am going to give you the “Real Straight Talk” here. Get yourself ready to play, do what is expected of you on and off the field, and listen to Coach Emerson and that staff at Citrus. They are moving kids to the next level, and you have the talent, but really need better direction!

Trojan Dad,

Since your head has been buried in the sand and everyone else here has heard about Jordan Edmond (there is no S), let me throw some more names out there of Glendora kids who were being noticed here in the blog that you have obviously missed.

Kid’s with names like Vega, Kluzny, Blayney, Crook, Bruno, Kunka, Segura, Ortiz, Niles and a few others that need to be mentioned but names escape me at this time. These kids may not be all-stars but they exemplify the true meaning of high school sports the way they carry themselves on and off the field.

Sir, if the only name you’ve ever heard of out of Glendora was Mike the Clone then that’s your fault. Mike the Clone is not bigger than anyone of these kids mentioned above or the ones not mentioned at all.

Jordan was our “franchise” sorry you missed him play. And I bet anything that Jordan would say he was just one the guys.

Your attention should have been focused on Jordan and his fellow “bagpipers” instead of dopey Mike the Clone because you missed a special group of kids which deserved better than what they got handed to them.

But that’s old news, time to look forward……and I’m looking forward.

It is too bad that Mike did not get the grades and was not a top notch Student. He would have fit playing in the Ivy League with his size. I still believe his heart outweighs his height and he could play at the D1 level of college football. He may not have the QB size but if I was a college coach we would be my kick off and punt returner. I hope he get to where he is going. This young mans talent amazes me at how easy he makes it look. I think Mike would have made a incredible Boxer. He is built with that fire in his eyes and he just wants to win.

Mike Mcd limitiations might be size, but I was told his grades were the big issue. Maybe Coach Emerson at Citrus will teach him that, so he has a chance at moving on.

Trojan Dad said:

Warrior, the scouts didn't miss anything. McD has his limitations like everyone else. Size for a QB is crucial but I think he might have a chance at a Division II school. He's a winner on the field much like Flutie and Brees. The teams they are on always seem to win inspite of their size. Alot of credit goes to Coach Thomas at Covina for playing to his strenghts, which are considerable, and giving his talent a place to grow and shine. By the way ALL the Covina players are very very good. Fast, tough and fundamentally sound.

Better yet, instead of reading the blog, just go to a practice and offer your own evaluation of Mike's talent. That's what I do. I just see for myself that way I can make up my own mind. I think the practices are open and they start at 7:00 at Baldwin Park High School.

Mikey. like I said it came from a good place...take that for what it's worth. Go to a practice as well. Hope to see Edmonds. The more I think about that kid (Edmonds)the more I think "we" all missed a special player because all we ever heard out of Glendora was YOU!

Costs just $2 and you can catch a glimpse of a lot of b-ball. The Tartans always play 2 times...at 8pm & 9pm (although the second game they use more of their reserves)

Mike McD. is listed at 5'9'' & 190lbs, thats probably the reason he didn't get a full ride to a D1 college, the scouts want tall quarterbacks
& Mc D. probably didn't fit the physical size mold.

Aram I was wondering if the summer basketball tournaments could be posted as well...with the regrettable absence of Willie Trimble, Jon Joe, Jerry Santos and Griffin Rahme it will be fun to see the new "stars" emerge.

Is Tiger-Cortez "on" again? Is Le Duc/Glendora reloaded? Is Ayala on the "hunt" again? Is Damien a one trick pony? Is the SGV ready for Wallace Gonzalez? And who replaces 30.1 points for Wilson? Is Claremont ready for life without "Block"?

We'll see!

Trojan Dad said:

You know it's football when my friend Mike the Clone is bigger than the players, coaches and the "present"...as in time.

Mike your comments about MIke McD are just ridiculous and without merit, both in your life and in his. You come on here bag on the Glendora parents, the Glendora coaches, the lack of "vision and purpose" by the "button wearers" and occassionally swipe at those you do not know or pretend to know. I think for the most part you're harmless but your comment and the "obligatory" enlightment and apology are such so last year. It's a new year. Grow up and try to remember you were once a kid/player, coach/teacher and mentor/friend. No one needs to hear the nonsense about "been there before"...apply that same theory as well and "Act like you've coached before" and respect your past profession and sport. Last year was brutal at Glendora and to EVERYONE'S credit at Glendora NO ONE SAID WHO YOU WERE TO SUBJECT YOU OR YOUR SON TO RIDICULE OR WORST. So please enough with the lectures and "knowledge"...I'm a "friend" and this is called "intervention". I'll meet you any time to discuss sports but enough with the "proper conduct life lessons" coming from you it seems invalid.

Insider: Great point about the Guard/Tackle play. It was brutal to see and fun to watch. By game time these kids will show why they were picked to represent the East!Skolaski and Herrera were rock hard tough.

Joe Amat: Role models? Go to practice...sit by me and tell me what you were trying to say. Maybe instead of "questioning" a "kid" like Mc D for his "suspected" behavior...even though none of you were there..I was...McD was just setting the tone.

Here's what really happened: During 11 on 11 one LB in particular was trying to "be the man" and Mike set him straight. This LB kept hitting "wrapping low" with only shorts, helmets and shoulder pads. I thought it was "cheap" of the LB in question but Mike set the tone..."Go after my knees and I'll flatten you OUT!" He did and the team responded as one..."TO BE THE MAN YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE MAN" Mike's the man. Case closed.

Warrior: why is it that people talk without seeing for themselves. Mike is without question the "best", "greatest", "most dominant" player (you choose) of the SGV for the past two years and his stats and accolades proves it. Better yet go to a practice with these great players and see who stands out. Mendrun isn't Mike. Mike "drops the hammer" and Mark "throws the ball". I talked to both and neither one has had a QB coach of any kind so it isn't their fault. With "next level" coaching Mark will probably be the much better but for right now Mike is ahead by alot. "Dropping the hammer" is QB speak for ...oh nevermind.

Last Point: Seems Salesian is coming out to the SGV to play the "Big Boys of the SGV" with only 70+ seniors and 200+ students. is that wild? They are in the Los Altos Basketball Consolation Championship (beat Santa Fe 3OTs to get there)Salesain will be playing Bishop Amat's "reserve" Freshmen team this year as well. Call it crazy but Salesian might end up playing Damien in Soccer very soon. God I love those Mustangs!

Please understand it's no disrespect to any player/parent to say someone's "better" or they need to "improve" it's just football and when they get to the next level..the HC coach will tell them with a "depth chart" the facts. Some players are stars because of systems and others would be stars no matter what. We'll see if things change at All Star practice when they get into full pads. Best of luck to everyone.

Joe Amat said:

BUT all athletes should listen to Clones advice about smack talk on the field. Let your game do the talking.

And if high school student/athletes don't think that younger kids are watching, they are sadly mistaken. Yes, just like Charles Barkley you are a role model. Responsibity - sure, but it comes with the turf. And those kids watching don't know yet if "it's just in good fun - or "that's the way we are supposed to act."

That's most evident in the land of the Bagpipers. Roll in on a Saturday morning during hoop season and watch the current Tartans coaching and officiating the little kids games. If a player steps out of line you can be darned sure that one of the basketball coaches let them know "how it's done here". Those kids grow up wanting to wear the Red and Black.

The Lancer Legacy that alums like to talk about was really built during the Nerf Football games behind the end-zone at MSAC during the varsity games. Those kids watched and wanted to be the next Haden/McKay/Sciarra/etc. Back then the Amat varsity players were highly involved in running freshmen conditioning in the summer. The players! And the little freshmen looked up to them and listened. Could you imagine that now? I remember the linebacker that ran my group, I thought was a BEAST! Wanted to be as tough (and cool)as he was. Saw him at a function many, many years later and he couldn't have been more than 5'10 175. Laughed like hell. But back then...he was the starting LB and set the tone for the culture of the program and was a role model for how future Lancers were supposed to act .

So players, lead by example - on and off the fields/court/pitch/mat. The next generation of players are watching you.

Mike said:

Joe Amat,

Exactly and when I first read it I was kind of concerned and as you said and I quote " act like you've done it before."

Aram took care of my concern.

Joe I can't say it enough I will appreciate a guy who gets into the endzone puts the ball down and goes back to the sideline and acts like he going back in there again.

And Joe congats to you on your baseball win. and pass it on to Bluorca and all you Amat honks, you guys no matter what ANYONE say's you guys took care of business and got it done.

Out!

Joe Amat said:

Clone,

Don't feel bad, I felt the same thing when I read it first. One of the BIGGEST problems in competitive sport is the lack of respect for your opponents. Shoot,if you make a great run - act like you've done it before.

Then read Damien Dad's report (that was glowing as far as McD was concerned) and figured it just looked worse on paper than in person and McD didn't need any piling on.

I guess it proves what they say, "don't believe anything you read - and only half of what you see!"

insider said:

all the comment people made about the linemen are true, but something that a lot of people missed was the guard position. Dont knock the VVL boys you have 2 VVL tackles who were asked to be converted to guards just for this game. Skolaski and Herrera...BTW if anyone wanted to see a battle they should have watched Lavea and Herrera go in one on ones...Lavea beat Herrera once on the speed rush , but the next time Herrera burried him...great battle....also can anyone tell me who the line coach was calling "shrek" seems a little early for nicknames....Just wanted to give the big uglies some credit because game time we all know it will be all about the skill kids...

ps: that tackle from st paul is a beast as well!

Again I wisk Mike McD well!

Aram said:

Mike the Clone,

I want to better explain something. Perhaps in my post it came off as McD being a trash talker, but it wasn't like that. He was merely having fun. I don't think anybody took it the other way. They were all joking after big plays and giving each other heat. And they weren't supposed to be making contact, but McD was seeking it and got it. It's like a player absorbing a good hit and asking for more. These guys were fired up yesterday and McD was a part of that.

I actually told Mrs. McDonough yesterday that one of the thing I always liked about Mike was that I never saw him trash talk or taunt. This is a guy who combined for 50 TDs in both of his seasons, but he never danced or taunted (that I saw). We also pointed out that in our Game of the Week video for the Covina/Baldwin Park game last year, Mike had a chance to respond to a question about him being better than Aaron Harris, but all he did was praise Harris and say "I'm not better than him, he's a great player."

Mike said:

Word of advice to Mike McD....

Aram pointed out some stuff that stuck out to me in his review of the practice session.

Mike just remember for as talented as you are, try not to talk the smack in front of some of these elite players. And I don't mean this in a way to knock you. I'm just saying it so that you understand that you’re playing with an elite group now, and your going to have to earn their respect. And "smacking" with this group of guys isn't the most wise thing to do.

Most guys can get away with it at the common high school level, but Mike remember this is going to be a different experience for you. A whole different level. Your playing with the cream of the crop so act like it. You’re a talented kid do you’re smacking with your actions and not the reactions.

And remember there will be people there watching every move you make and running the mouth doesn't sit well with coaches, recruiters, writers, and anyone else that matters.

Mike, people know about your reputation. Prove to them that is in the past. Go about your business on the field and off the field with class and carry yourself as a leader you'll be amazed at the amount of respect you will earn and be amazed that once you get your act together scholastically and academically just how many doors of opportunity will begin to open for you. Otherwise your just going to be just another good high school quarterback.

Just some friendly advice from Mike the Clone, so take it as you will. You‘ve got the skills use them to your advantage, from what I’ve seen and read you haven’t taken advantage of those skills yet.

Have fun Mike!

OUT!

Mike the Clone

Chief Legend,

I can pretty much tell you that they go every week day at 5 p.m.

I don't have the schedule, though. But it's pretty set. There hasn't been a time released for the big Saturday practice on the 30th. I will post that when Coach Heggins lets me know.

Aram said:

Good stuff Damien Dad. I was thinking that it must be super sweet for people like Mrs. McD or Mrs. Mendrun or any parent for that matter to see their kids practice and play at the HS level one last time.

Chief legend said:

Hey Aram do you know the enitre practice schedule for the east? If so could you post it.

Damien Dad returns! said:

Although Damien Dad was retired for good I thought it would be nice to bring him back after seeing the All Stars practice. I sat with Mrs. McD (Jody...good to see you again after all these years!) and Aram ( He's nicer in person I'll give him that!)and just enjoyed seeing "talent".

Here's the skinny:

Seeing as I'm a major Clint Eastwood fan I'll give you "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" version of what I saw.

The Good:
Any thought that Mike McDonough is not the greatest player of his generation (2 varsity years) is just plain ignorance. It's hate and nothing more. He is without question this team's leader and it took him 1 hour to establish that fact (Everyone agrees he's THE MAN!) It's body language, it's leadership, it's performance, it's Mike staying after to help the backs get the steps right. This kid/young man is exceptional. Ask the defense. Ask the receivers, ask the backs, ask the line Mike is something else. He's on another level.

The Bad:
Looking at Cervantez from Amat and being fortunate enough to talk to the young man before practice gave me insight into the goings on at Bishop Amat and the kind of quality athlete/player and student I knew they were capable of producing. 6"3" 265 lbs of muscle, technique and fundamentals. Cervantez arrived at Baldwin Park HS at 4 for a 5pm practice!~ Talk about being mentally ready to play. Mt SAC better enjoy him cuz he's one and done and on to bigger and better things in Div I. Great technique. What a stud! This player is a BAD man...and that's good! ..if he's on your side.

The Ugly:
One of the sad things about the SGV vs the OC is typified by the lost of a great player. Ralp Diaz is without question a player that could have and should have been Division I at any other time and place. While the OC kids have the grades and the $$$$money to play JC or "walkon" to great Division I schools Ralp Diaz will play his last game to "get a job and make some money". That's a lost for football. It breaks my heart to see a talent as great as his sidetracked before it's time. His combination of speed, balance, strenght and football awareness puts him in rare company. Ralph it was an honor to see you play! If Ralph Diaz played MLB at Amat or Damien he is playing for FREE on Saturdays. Imagine Fletcher and Ralph in the middle for Bishop Amat? Un-freakin-believable!!!

Enough with the movies let's talk football!

Any parent who "thinks" his son should get more playing time or is a Division I "lock" should see these practices for a little rude awakening.

Sam Levea is a tremendous closer. The last two yards to the ball is pure speed and BANG!!! Ferocious hitter! The RB from Claremont is ridiculous! Exceptional balance. The RB from Nogales is John Riggins "reborn" a "refrigerator going down hill" get outta the way! The receiver from Bonita is "swwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeetttttttt!!!!" Aram's right this kid is fluid! Great route runner and very good hands. All the receivers are nasty good!

Alot of the linemen are just sick! Would have been nice to see Damien's De La Torre out there but hey it's a numbers game. There's not a weak sister out there! I really liked the WRs they've assembled. Damien should send their Varsity WRs to see these guys work. In fact it should be mandatory attendance for any "legit" baller to see this kind of talent on the field at the same time and see what it takes to be where they are.

Almost done. Here's a big props to two very special people. Coach Thomas at Covina is a wonderful coach and should be congratulated on his two year "run". His players are exceptional competitors, very quick and incredibly football smart. It's a compliment to Coach Thomas that he had that kind of assembled talent and squeezed every once of ability from his "team". But where is Manny Esquivel?

And another big props goes to Jody McD, Mike's mom. It was a pleasure to see Mike look up into the stands and acknowledge his mom after a jaw breaking run. He looks up and points to her and blows her a kiss. She tells "us" "I've been with him all the way! From day one!" and you know what she means.

Congratualtions to all the ALL STAR players and ALL STAR coaches....STAY HEALTHY.

See Aram I'm alot nicer in person as well...just don't anyone at Damien...it's bad for my image. It's like Jody said, "Don't believe everything you read on the blog". Maybe I will coach after all....maybe Bassett! I'll ask my brother and see what he thinks. I love helping people who got the short end of the stick and besides maybe coaching "tough" kids is more my style. Better parent support.

PS ~ What the former Bassett coach did to that school is shameful! But that's a story for another day.

That was painless.
