Congrats to Randy Backus for becoming the head coach at Temple City. I played under Difiori and Backus. They are both great and motivating coaches. Good luck Randy.

Aram, thank Staff Writer, Scott Galetti for me. He put together a fine touch on the retirements of T/C's (Langdale and Martin). As an educator I happen to know that professionals like these two men are hard to come by. Their successes will never be matched. Their knowledge has been passed forward to countless students that are the benefactors of their sacrifices. I recall in the early 70's T/C reigned as the football powerhouse that every SGV team tried to imitate. Back then Plaid Lad sheded his kilt for a football uniform...and knew first hand what kind of champions the Rams were. They were admired and respected by all. T/C and Glendora has had a valored connection because several of T/C's top athletes and students, (once grown) settled and raised their families in the city of Glendora. Hence, the names of Tommy-Touch Down, Roundtree and Stockham (just to name a few) were successes on the gridiron and in the real world because of teachers and coaches like Langdale, Martin, Hitchcock, Moore, and Swanson. L&M I wish you health and happiness in your days of retirements.

What the heck is going on at Amat? Ive been gone on business for two weeks and all this stuff has happened. Man I hope that they can recover from these blows. I never thought I would say this I hate the slime, LOL. Amat fans stay loyal get rid of all the cancer at the school it will soon turn everything around. Why would a parent living in HH need financial aid to a HS anyway?....the homes there are in the 600-800 thousand range. take out a loan if you want to go to Amat. Amat does not recruit. Also, stay there and play for Wilson or Los Altos your kid most likely could not hang in the D1 area of HS football...IF he was that good and is living in HH , Gano would be knocking at your door. Question if an Amat parent says they will pay my kids tuition so he could transfer and play ball there is that illegal? He isnt a coach or anything how does that work? Its a really good school but I want to know if that is against the rules. Anyone who knows how does that work? I am new to this so if this is stupid I am sorry....

Looks as if alot of players will be exiting Amat after school lets out. Trust me as an alimni and booster I am way more informed on the situation than people might think. Once again we will see who will cover the vast majority of some of the starters tuition now! Good Luck Amat!

Your a mess. You are looking at Amat as if they are the greatest ever. Why wont they play us? Chickens...

Before getting started, since this is a really a DiFiori thread, I've got to start by saying that he got a little bit of a bad rap and did a better job at amat than he is generally given credit for. TC would be lucky to get him back.

Now since, technically, it is also an amat thread (as mentioned in ATs initial blog) without accusations of hijacking :)

As one of the few who really knows what your tag line stands for, the fact that they " wear the blue and gold" does not automatically guarantee the "the men" are going to be "mighty".

I think that too many people in recent years (administration included) have assumed that it just happens and that we do not have to go above and beyond to achieve greatness. THAT is what created the legacy, and it is going to take that - plus more - to revive it.

Realistic doesn't mean negative. Honest opinions (whether they are shared or not) doesn't automatically mean someone is a hater. I LOVE your passion and unbridled support for amat. However our boys (and staff) need to realize that it is their blood, sweat and tears that "Game Watcher" talks about that is going to detremine what lies ahead from them.

Thankfully, they have assembled a tough schedule that will challenge players to strive for greatness, instead of succumbing to the pressure of scheduling way down to just get wins (as our boys basketball team does). That's what makes amat football different than the other "lower division teams" that are starting to claim their spot among the elite in the valley. Step up and play a challenging pre-season to prove your metal. That is why players go to amat. For the challenge of of playing the best.

Good that their have been some necessary changes in staff. There is nothing wrong with being the underdog, flying under the radar and needing to work your @$$ off to get somewhere. Let people tell them that they have doubts. Let them be reminded that they have big shoes to fill and high expectations to live up to.

Then step up and prove them wrong!

It's guys like Watcher that are talk ing out of their A--..........20yrs of Amat football? what does that make you a expert?...you did not learn anything in those 20yrs I'll tell you. Loyalty runs deep in Amat and because one player is gone does not mean this Team is gone from the start. 3-7 and now you come back and say I hope the opposite...make up your mind fool. The fact that our star receiver got canned does not mean we cannot regroup and still have successful season. I dont care where he ends up...bottom line is, he let his teamates down and he is now a distant memory. The Team looks very together and is not frowning not having him. They are big young men who stick together like real Lancers, and will fight the fight and put it all o0n the line come Fridays reguardless of your predictions Watcher. If you are a True Lancer as you claim , keep your mouth shut and let the season progress without your negativity here.

The reality is the players read the blog and can't understand why Lancers would be so negative toward them. And they take everything personal. They are teenagers who are emotional about their school.

They know what it means to be a Lancer. They have had many former players come down to the school and have spoken to them on what it means: Sciarra, McCutcheon, Minor to name a few. These current players have parents who are Lancers. Hell, the coaching staff is loaded with Lancers. And they all have one goal. Sure there have been extremely talented teams at Amat But there have also been less talented Amat teams who came together as a team to uphold the values and tradition of what is a true Lancer team. That will be the mark of this squad. True Lancers who were put in a corner and fought their way out.

So if you are a player reading this blog, Believe in yourself, your team and your coaches because when it comes down to it, The people who you can really count on, on those Friday nights, are those that shared the blood, sweat and tears and sacrificed their time to help make you better players and better men.

Amat fans keep refering to the Wells kid as a special player. He is a special player no doubt! Probably will be a Monrovia Wildcat! GO CATS! I think that Stone kid who was a freshman at Dominguez last year was something to watch. Lightning fast!!! You think Wells can turn it on this kid has another gear. He transfered to Paramount.

I have been following Amat football for a substantial amount of time 20+ years. If you think that your comparison to 150 fans to other schools then you cant see the problem yourself. Its newbies like you that make it so difficult. Who cares about other schools in the area. We are Amat and we set the standard plain and simple. I am not comparing this years to team any other team or school. I am comparing it to teams of the past here at Amat. I am an Amat fan through and through but this team is at best talent wise of that of team of 2000. You shouldnt worry about my name as a true Lancer the kids shouldnt be worried about me they should concentrate on their opponents. Anyhow I am a true believer Amat could beat anyone in the area as for their schedule. I was leaning towards 4-6 then I heard of D. Wells going to South Hills was the 3-7 clincher. Believe it or not he will be sorely missed. That kid was a special player. Another big change is teh coaching staff. Their game plan preparation is not what it should be therefore we will lose at least 2 games just becasue of coaching. Anyhow I will have more info in the future.

3-7 will do fine for me as long as those 3 wins are SO ND, Crespi and Loyola, because thats what counts. This Amat team will do better than .500 this year count on it...Verti put a better staff together this year and the weight training showed last Friday. You were at the Scrimmage, so you obviously have a intrest in Amat, or were you a hater in the stands?...For a scrimmage there were at least 150 people there, some HS do not get even that on game day...3-7 with no fact. You must be rich come every Friday when your Lotto numbers match correctly every time...all guess work here for you. Amat will be fine. We are not going undefeated and yes there are better teams allegedly, but this team is going to hold its own and surprise lots of the teams on their schedule. Barring no major injuries and grades check out ok, this team has some real talent on it. The o-line you claim was marginal...You did not see the real o-line because we had kids playing Defensive line that are on the o-line, so you did not do your homework correctly. Go watch your own team practice Watcher. Thats right your probably not there and over at Amat because your team is far and above everyone and is going 10-0 this year.

If we didn't all give "opinions" there'd be nothing to blog about! You've got to admit that watching an amat scrimmage without pads and missing some "key players" that we were counting on might make us a little less impressive. And this guy has, apparently, seen a bunch of amat teams in the past.

With the players on the field, 3-7 might be a little on the pessimistic view (but it could happen) 4-6 could be the typical take and I think that 5-5 and getting in the playoffs will be a step in the right direction. Anything more than that is a big success for verti at this point.

Do amat fans hope for more? Sure we do !
Do we feel like we deserve better? Absolutely !
Will Kiefer Stadium cheer like crazy for the boys ! You bet !

A Head Football coach's time committment is triple that of any athlete. I don't think many people fully appreciate the effort it takes to be a head coach, even one that is not winning championships.

I believe you meant to say "qualify," rather than "quantify."

Anyway, it is very likely that MD got more time with family as an assistant coach and closer to home than he did as a head coach. HCs have several hours more to work each week than assistants do. Last year may have been a critical year for him personally such that he is now able to be a head coach again in clean conscience.

DiFiori's best year at TC was a semi-final appearance in 1998. No league championship though. Monrovia got it every year.

Ive seen at least 20 Amat teams without pads and I will stick to my guns. This team will surprise no one, they will go 3-7. Other Amat teams you could flat out see the talent level was far superior. With their schedule I predict 3-7. I hope a better record but it is definite down year for our Lancers....

I walked away or as you said "I'm outta here".Two of us on that staff that year did and a third the following year. As it turned out we made the right decision. Some continued coaching and teaching and others went on to have successful business ventures.

Was at the Amat Spring Game and let me tell you guys, all I can say is , WOW! They are in a world of trouble. I am predicting that Amat goes maybe 3-7. What a dissappoinment! No team speed and I was expecting a huge line. they are marginal. Austin is very good but not as big as anticipated. He has the frame but must fill it in he weighs like 230 pounds. All in all a descent team but not what was expected from an Amat team.....Long season looms ahead...

My head coach didn't have too...he walked out gracefully! And I respect him to this day! I beleive Roger Murray was the beat writer back in those days

I have a feeling that the TC job is going to be quite a scramble with some very solid candidates.

Coach DiFiori's wife, Dr. DiFiori, is a radiologist at Kaiser so he probably gets to play Mr Mom quite often. The west end of the SGV is closer to home, so that might make things easier to get home and/or to the kids and allow "more time for the family"

Let's say Coach Mean Machine is a Head Coach...by the way I'm aweful as a Head Coach, great assistant horrible Head Coach...and it causes problems at home (always does)because of parents, boosters, players and Administration and I get home and am grumpy with Mrs. Mean Machine...who by the way is looking pretty "mean" these days for a 46 year old,and the kids and she tells me "Mean...you're being MEAN...blah balh blah" And after awhile I realize I love coaching but I love my family more...especially when I ain't grumpy. So "WE" ...ie. "she" puts her foot down and I resign from Mean Machine High School.

Now I'm home and "really" driving everyone crazy, even the dog, and Mrs. Mean tells me..."Go back to what you love but....blah, blah, blah" Okay breathing room. Everyone's happy!

Opps Mr. Mean Machine is pretty good...we start to win at MM school II and I coach only the QBs and come home at a decent hour, play with the kids, play with Mrs. Mean Machine and BANG!!!! When the season over...."Honey I got great news!!!! I just got the job Head Coaching job at New Mean Machine High School III" She rolls her eyes and I tell her it's going to be different this time. Closer to home, less myopic parents and the big tease...THE ADMINISTRATION LOVES ME!!!! (for now).

Did you read his article on that runner from Bonita? or Don Lugo? a few years back. Juliano or Gabliano something like that. Awesome stories,,very inspiring. He kept breaking records his senior year in the 800 meters.

He went on to national championships at a Div III school. Great kid. Awesome individual.

aram did it ever cross your mind that difiori may have had some personal issues he needed to work on. maybe it took a year to fix things, maybe longer. your interest in coaches & their wives is starting to scare me.

As always, you're missing the point and looking for any excuse to start a beef with me. But I like it!

Let me try to explain it better for you ...

Coach Jones (a mythical character) leaves job at Mean Machine High School and tells media (not just Aram) "I want to spend more time with my family."

Fast forward five months and Coach Jones appears on the sidelines of Damien Dad High School with head set and whistle and nice team polo. What happened to spending more time with family?

I'm not worried about me. I mean I'd like to tell my readers what the reason was, but I have to go with what the coach says ON THE RECORD.

Who I'm truly worried about are coach's wives and families. They may have read the Tribune or Star-News and thought "Wow, more trips to Disneyland with Daddy." But it didn't happen.

Aram this is getting to be a weakness with you. "Spending more time with my family" is a concept a single man can not understand. I've been married 28 years to the same woman and I completely understand what that means.

What is so troubling to you about this? Maybe it means when he's home..with his family...because the job is "bleeding over" to his "family time" it isn't worth it anymore. In other words he wants a job that doesn't go "HOME" with him. In other words the job is creating a poor "quality of life" at home...and maybe a new job, with new responsibilities FITS BETTER.

Like writing for a rag paper and thinking that's the same pressure as writing for the TIMES. Sorry for the dig but when you keep on with his family life excuse (your words intent) you deserved that.

Like me talking about football at any other school but Damien means I get to enjoy the game, enjoy blogging and meet interesting people without someone making fun of my family, me or anything else that suits their fancy. I still know the game well, talk as much as I always do, opine as often as I always did but now people respect what I have to say, seek me out to help their kids, ask my advice and generally enjoy my company. The only difference is I DON"T TALK ABOUT DAMIEN...or at least I try not to.lol

Wasn't there a GREAT sportwriter that left the SGV Tribune Sports section to write a "novel" or something about 5/6 years ago? He was fantastic! I read him everyday..did he ever write that novel because I miss his writing very much. Witty, insightful and great integrity...if only I remembered his name.

Oh by the way one of Mooney's coaches is my son's basketball coach for U13. Art Carrington is a great guy. Actually he coached Mooney in high shcool. I could listen to Art's "war stories" , both on and off the field, for hours! Old school values. old school coach and really works for the kids. He was scheduled for Spinal surgery on Tuesday so keep him in your prayers. Get well Coach Art!We miss you already.

Mooney left to be a VP at San Marino, where supposedly he's got the option to coach. DiFiori didn't win a CIF title at TC. They haven't won CIF since the 70s. The last finals berth was 1986 or 87 when Mooney was carrying the rock as a fullback.

What happened to Mike Mooney? TC only Lost two games last year, and their first loss was to La Salle, where DiFiori coached at last year. Anyways, Good Luck to DiFiori if he gets the job again. He did win a CIF Championship there, didn't he?
