Daily dose ...

Hey Eddie, bet they don't have this in NY.

Get ready for this item to be a daily staple. Among other things, I will post a once-a-day thread with some tidbits of info for you ... AND ... it will likely include a photo of my lunch. It won't start until I get back to work in early August. The idea came to me while sitting in the Dodger dugout with Juan Pierre, just thinking about life, two hours before yesterday's game. Not a word was spoken, or rappped, but it was very stirring. I must tell you that I set foot back in the office today for the first time in a long while. I immediately got the "Got a minute?" invitation into Steve "The Legend" Hunt's office. Not sure if he was kidding when he fired me for wearing shorts, but technically I'm still alive because I wasn't actually working. For those who don't know, Steve is the greatest living prep sports writer. He also calls the shots now for the entire SGVN. For me, and those before me, it's kinda like following Wooden at UCLA. I'm not trying to score points, but those of you with a little gray in your hair know what I'm talking about. By the way, I'll play the Steve Lavin role if his wife is in the package. Following the impromptu discussion, me, Fred Robledo and Eddie Barrrera, of Mets fan degeneracy fame, went to lunch. Go to Eddie's blog if you want to discuss local news. Eddie got his first dose of Mongolian BBQ today, so be gentle. Between meetings I made some calls to football coaches and this is what I got. Nick Lenhart, with a good recent performance at a passing tourney, has a slight edge on two others for Amat's QB vacancy going into Hell Week. Yeah, I capitalized Hell Week. And I got this from Amat coach Mark Verti, so trust it. Verti also said that Marcus Wagner still wears the golden "A" on his helmet. Then I spoke to Damien coach Scott Morrison, who gave me an eery feeling that Sparty will be just fine this year. That was nothing like the feeling I got from Charter Oak coach Lou Farrar, though. More on that later. Anyway, Coach Morrison said he was pleased with how summer went. He also told me QB Danny Pertusati won't play in the secondary if he can help it. I don't agree, but then again, there's a reason why Coach Morrison wears the headset and I hop over the cables. Back to Big Lou. You know that feeling you got sometimes when watching The Sopranos? The one where you knew something was going to happen, like somebody getting whacked a few scenes later. That's the vibe I got today from the SGV's boss of bosses. It's been dangerously quiet in Charter Oak recently. Farrar did reveal that O-Line coach Moose Evans likes his group this year. As you know, CO has a lot to replace on its O-Line. But so far, so good. Arroyo coach Jim Singiser called me back after I left a message, but I couldn't pick up at the time because I had left the office and preoccupied. I will call you soon, coach (if you're reading).

UPDATE: I forgot, Freddie dubbed The Crazy Horse in West Covina as our spot for Monday Night Football. You should've seen Robledo's eyes when he saw it's going to open soon. See you there?

How's the LA QB situation developing?

For SOME that are Alumni and just show to the football games in support of Amat good for you. These are the people that say "give Verti time"...thats right you dont care you have no one going there playing football anymore. For the Parents of kids last year and this year and for the next 3-4 years I would think you would want to play on a winner and it seems like there is no winner coming very soon. I agree Carroll has used poor judgement in promoting the meal ticket which is the football revenue. He should have hired a high priced coach with experience, this would have given us a true winner and have kept the players from leaving and recruiting would be at a all time high. lets face it with Verti we are stuck to find out eventually if this young man can coach. The question to all is, does Amat have the time to dwindle with this project of Coach Verti. He is gaining his coaching experience at Amat. This is not a place for a coaches training ground. Amat prides itself on results for its football team. We do not have the time of this training of a young coach. If that St. Bonnie's coach would have been given the job none of this drama would be at Amat. Carroll you really hurt our chances in this waiting game...

I'm sure that everyone would be surprised to know how much Servite and Mater Dei pay their football coaches, the kind of packages they have offered (full time coach-no classes, etc) or how much JSerra was offering coaches in multiple sports to try to lure them to their campus. amat blew an opportunity to bring in John Mack from St Bonaventure (he was chomping at the bit to leave for a bigger challenge and has since left Bonny's to gone to Ventura Junior College).

amat needs to put butts in the seats at Keifer and get a home playoff game to help pay for the bleachers that they have to rent every year for the visitors side. The other lost part of this is the new gym that is an albatross to fundraising efforts. Some alums want to give to other sports/programs but every penny has to go to Msgr's. monument. They open this great gym and lost a coach that won a CIF title and could have helped fill it. Instead they hired some old St Paul loser that ran off players, lowered expectations and ran the program into the ground. Now they play in an empty gym.

They should have done all that they could to keep Parades, Salter, Martinez, Lokar, etc. You're right - Msgr. must go!!!!

Glad to see a quality coach hired at AMAT. I know there has been drama on the team the last couple years. I just wish the there would be changes in other areas as well. I know a few girls that had played and also girls that had quit the team. These are very good players and the team should do well under new direction.

As for the football program being a big contributor to the economics of Amat, I agree and that is why when a good coach comes along Msgr. needs to open up the wallet to keep him or her. There needs to be more of a review of the coaches as the season comes to an end. Maybe a panel comprised of alumni, administration, coaches and parents to review the season and the effect that the coach has on the team. A lot of the drama that I have seen is because the coaches have not ended things as they start or just look the other way. The coach is the one responsible for the team and there are no consequences. I have seen it first hand, I am not coming out of the blue here. That is why I aplauded the dismissal of the two stud football players this year, in years past that would have been swept under the rug and worse behavior has.

Lets not stop here. Baseball, soccer now lets look at some other areas.....

Can anyone answer my question as to the retirement or replacement of Msgr. Carroll??????

Saw this on another blog....Amat better have a good year......

There is an eight-team package made up of Bishop Amat, SO/Notre Dame, Crespi, Loyola, St. Paul, Chaminade, Alemany and St. Francis.

It was determined a year ago that at that time the strongest four programs were Amat, SO/ND, Crespi and Loyola, and they were placed in the Division I (Pac 5) Serra League. The other four teams were put in the Mission League (Western, Div. III).

Every two years, the fourth place finisher in the Serra League and the Mission League champion will switch leagues. The next evaluation and possible realignment will be for the 2008 season.

THE INFO IS SEMI CORRECT. THE FOURTH PLACE FINISHER HAS THE OPTION TO SWITCH. NOTRE DAME WOULD PROBABLY BE THE ONLY TEAM TO TAKE THIS OPTION SINCE THEY WERE RELUCTANT TO JOIN THE PAC 5 BUT THEY WILL NOT FINISH FOURTH.

FOOTBALL PLEASE,
If you read the blog I am responding to you will see john was mentioning other coaches of various sports or did you bother to do that. I did end with a reply concerning football. So please put your bloggers badge away and patrol some other beat and chill out.

What do you think of the new girls soccer coach hire? As for Verti like I have said in the past give him a chance and see what unfolds. Students leave for one reason or another. Let's focus on the true LANCERS that stay and will represent us on the field and get behind them and wish the ones that leave good fortune in their new choices. As for coaches that leave it is probably more a question of improving their economic situtation and not that Mnsgr. wants to run the program down because after all , the revenue from football is a big contributor to the working budget for the school.

Response 2: Cop/Coach & dhs fan

I saw DHS at passing league this year...and sure enough Morrison looked like he might have pulled another rabbit out of his hat again this time around with the talent pool that I observed.

The two WR that you both mentioned looked great. Although, I believe Bento was the one WR that I was alluding too. Not much in size...but did have descent speed with soft hands as I saw him catch lawn-darts in the end-zone. Herrera was another good looking kid. He difinitely looked like he would be quite the contributor for DHS. All in all, I wish you guys the best....and looking forward to our meet on 10/12/07.

PLAID LAD

TAKE A LOOK AT ARAM

From fish wrap to star. He reminds me of a radio to TV star host named Jim Rome. I hope that he will mention us scrubs from the SGV when he is put into the HOF of sports broadcasters with Chick,Scully and Harry Carey. AT it was a fun ride while it lasted. You brought a good thing to us scrubs by starting this fourm. The button wearers for GHS and Amat will be lost without your guidance but i'm sure they will get by.(HA HA) AT Good luck to you and my you suceed in your new venture.

PLAID LAD

The kid that you are talking about with the hands name is Bento. This kid is as tough as nails. He has suprized a lot of people. Taylor has good hands as well and has great football sence. Cop/Coach is right Damien's passing game will suprize a lot of teams this year.

PLAID

You are probably talking about Taylor Herrera. He got alot of experience last season as a sophomore and will be a game breaker if he can stay healthy. He got a concussion at the Bonita Tourney and was in an auto accident the follwoing day. He should be fine to start fall practice. There are 4-5 juniors that will see the field at WR this season. All are fast and run good routes.

Reply to sl nightmare:

Robert Horn, is not a running back this year, in the past he was. He is very hard to tackle but with his injuries and basically all the complications he's had, he isn't practicing with the offense at all. He's only on the D-side this year. Probably for the best, because if he was a RB, he'd be starting but he isnt very reliable to be playing all 10(atleast) games...

BTB-teamroom

Amat is full of tradition. The coaches that have been hired this past year have been quite a let down. The head coaches that are alumni are horrible. They are running around like they were still running the school like seniors. Lack of maturity is what hits it on the head. I agree with the releasing of the kids for moral issues but they are the ones that let them think that they were above the school. Msgr. Carroll does not have a clue. He got lucky with the recommendation of Andy Nieto by Dr. Heminway, old friends. Lets see how long he and Richard Wiard stick around. Heck Richard Wiard teaches at Charter Oak where his wife is the principle and was the head coach before the AD wouldn't give him gym time to build a program. I can see him moving soon also. All sports including Football, Boys Basketball, Softball, Volleyball (both boys and girls) have not met their expectations. Squeeking into the playoffs in mediocre leagues don't get it, they should have dominated those schools. All their coaches contracts should have been reviewed this past year and possible released. With the facility that they have Girls basketball should not be the only winning indoor sport. There is a lot to offer a coach to come in and build a winner but Msgr. Carroll has no intention to do so. I hate to say it but Amat should be renamed Dramat for the drama that it produces daily and Msgr. Carroll is unwilling to address.

Msgr. Carroll must go!!!!!!!!!!!

Does he have to retire or can he be released from his duties. Someone out ther please answer this age old question that many of the Alumni and Boosters have. I am for Academics but Athletics and Academics and Athletics can and have gone hand in hand at Amat.

Msgr. Carroll must go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone think Msgr. Carroll will address the real issues at Amat and his hiring practices.

Reply to BTB- What about Horn? Doesnt he carry the ball? I saw him at the fitness center.omg. Glad I dont have to tackle him.

Tartan Fans:

I've been reading the blogs these past few months, so i want to add my .02 cents, but not enough info on the Tartan offense.
Offense looks weaker part of the team but that can be fixed.
Kaluz looks pretty good, He is a "baller".
-Recievers are fast, (well maybe a few... or two)
BJ is a big guy, players call him the future Brandon Bryan... Great Hands, 6'4", he might have a slow speed but i hope "Coach P" will get him more physical
Russ Johnson... great talent, sad that he came in later to the football program, well im glad he left that old school of his
Aaron Stockham... wow this kid is going to be somethin, fast, great hands and great vision, and he's a sophmore!!!
J Gettinger... COWBOY... hmmmm
"Woody"... wow fast kid.. great hands.. could be one of the best if coach put him in more... but really his sport is Soccer and baseball from what i've heard???
-Lineman
Center= Austin Sefton... he's gonna be a little un sure this year. but he did okay... well atleast from what ive seen
Guards= i know coach p has been changing this postion around alot... there loosin there big joe from last year and going down to another big guy...
Ryan Noreiga... big guy, has speed, but a lil softy.
Thomas Lily.. Strong, very fast... but messes up quite a bit.. but he'll learn.
Tackles= two solid, but one a little iffy...
Addison Bachman... tragic story with this one, big guy big big guy, but he is also a little softy, everyone kno's this kid, really entergetic but i kno he;ll get after it...
Jared McGarry... Now this is a big guy but not to tall at all, played very well last year, great blockin and knos how to turn on the boosters, expectin to see good things from him
Tight ends= two main guys and both hard to choose the starter, Action Jackson or Aguierre, wow both with great hands and both with about the same speed, aguirre is a lil bigger and he knows how to play ball, he also blocks very well same with Jackson either way their both great... i hope to see alot of double tight
Full backs= we all kno who the main man is going to be and is it of course VEGA, wow greatest vision out there but a lil sad he is in the shorter body he is in.... 2nd in command the big 40... wow this guy is a man amongst these boys... he's huge, he's really gonna mess players up this year. he really gets after, especially at practice. he runs a few people over
RBs= wow this is where it gets tough... alot of new people to this role...
Brent martney... very quick and is very aggresive, i've heard alot of bad stuff about this kid but he does prove it on the field, he has great hands but his vision isnt to great, not to sure if he'll be able to find those blockers of his, but im sure he'll catch great balls...
Matt tarango... short kid not too big at all, ive seen this kid play, he gets after it, he might be short but he has speed and agility is alright, pretty good vision, i kno he'll bounce out and find that running lane to the promise land...
Andrea Holmes... big kid, and he's only a sophmore, he can do great things but the leading role at RB will be a bit to much for him, i see him splittin time. at passin league he looked a bit goofy, weird running form, looks like he has no balance. but im sure all can be changed

this blog has gone stale ....

Response 2: COP/COACH

Good to hear ya on this grey-space. Knowing your roots I was wondering if you knew the name of the Damien WR I saw this year while at passing league. The kid was an underclassmen with soft hands, good speed, and had the ability to digout everything that was thrown at him. He's one that I'm sure we will all hear about as the season continues. Best of luck this year and stay healthy.

PLAID LAD

FANatic

Henry coached at Charter Oak JAA last season. He didn't achieve the level of success he is used to, but the boys were well coached.

I think you missed the first name I mentioned (Schmitz) so 4 of the 7 mentioned return. That qualifies as most, doesn't it?

Mendrun will be missed, but Pertusati should fill his shoes well. Eschardies will be missed also, but if Damien has a surplus of talent, it's at WR. From what little I have seen, they go about 8-9 deep in quality hands and speed.

Just so you and PLAID know, I am rooting for Glendora to win every game but the Damien game. I hope my CO friends understand.

Mr. Olivas has been recruited by Gano to Los Altos !!! C.I.F. states Gano has now gone to far & will launch an investigation. Ok to recruit players, but not Gustapo Administrators !!! LOL

RE: Please, Mr Olivas is not with the school anymore. QUESTION: Did he go to Los Altos or South Hills?

Oh and good night Tart Mom! Can you bring over some warm milk, cookies and sing me a nighty night song? :)

BTW, I don't think your husband knows me, if he did he would love me like everyone else does:)

FANatic has left the Blog!

Cop/Coach

I know we know of each other as my son was part of the Glendora JAA program....Mikey may disagree with me here, but what a great program to prepare the kids for HS football. Henry was a great influence on my son. We still see Henry every now and then at the games and you can see in his eyes how proud he is of his old "pupils".

My son and I have some good friends who play at Damien as most Glendoran's do. Unlike Damien, for the most part, GHS can only pull from the local talent base....DARN! I guess this immediatly puts us at a disadvantage when ever we play you guys, however, its always a fun game. The kids have the opportunity to play against some of their old teamates from the JAA years.

Actually only 3 of the 6 names you mentioned in your post "Most of the names that I mentioned are back this season" will be back for Damien this season. The 3 not returning (Mendrun, Marine and Eschardes), plus of course other graduating studs like Hile, Harper and Stokes are all going to be difficult to replace. I wish you lots of luck. I know Glendora was in similar shoes last season having to replace nearly all key players, but I believe the boys did just fine and Damien should do fine as well.

Thanks for the support re: the Covina issue. I believe whatever happens between the time the game starts and the time the game ends is all that should matter. You have 4 qtrs to win or to lose! The best team on the field wins, no if's and's or but's.

FANatic has left the Blog and will call it a night...nighty night Cop/Coach, Mikey and Pladdy and all you fellow "Button Wearers" throughout bloggers land! Good night, good night, good night. OOO say can you see....ENOUGH!

FANatic and PLAID-LAD

I appreciate the responses that you guys have given.

FANatic, although I may admit that Chino Hills was the better team versus Damien, Damien was better that night. CHHS tried to run wide like Glendora tried with Edmond. They threw just one pass to the TE (Ucla commit) Cory Harkey. In the end, does Chino Hills stop Mendrun if they aren't distracted? Who knows? I do know they ran behind big (6-6, 330) Matt Schmitz on the play.

Injuries are big. Last season Edmonds was a huge part of your offense. He seemed healthy against Damien, yet the Spartans were without RB Marcus Williams. Chris Marine stepped in and ran well, but they were just running the Trap play with him all night. When the defense got pulled in Mendrun went up top to Eschardies and Herrera, and it was all over. Add in DeJon Miller nailing FGs from 53 yards out and you get last season's result. Most of the names that I mentioned are back this season.

The crowd that says Covina beats you with McDonough or CO with Johnson will just have to replay the game in their heads forever, because the fact is they lost...end of story.

PLAID-LAD, even though my son plays WR for Damien, there is no way that I can do a complete break down of the Spartan squad. I just don't know the kids, or their parents that well. I have never been part of the "Damien Family". It's not that I don't get along with them. I say hello and speak to everybody. I just have more friends up at Glendora and at Charter Oak. This is my neighborhood. Damien families come from 35-40 different cities in 4 different counties. Some of my son's closest friends live in Chino Hills, Upland and Moreno Valley. Needless to say, we don't go out for a beer after practice.

Interestingly enough, I probably know both of you guys well. I coached for 2 seasons (2002 and 2003) at Glendora JAA. I guarantee our paths have crossed. I'll see you guys soon.

Mr. Olivas is not with the school anymore.

To the concerned parent,

Get your head out would you. Heck the school does not care who comes there to play football anymore and they like it this way. It was done so purposely. To get away from the reputation of being a football school they can now concentrate on a being a school that have it's acedemics as it's number one priority. Why do you think they hired such a lousy and inexperience coaching staff for their football team. It will not be long before you see them dismantle the Girls Basketball team. They already dismantled the Boys Basketball team. They have Mr. Olivas run around the school hassling the football players to force them to leave. Monsignor Carroll could care less he is going to retire soon and make out on a pension so fat it would make your teeth rattle. This schools sports programs some claim are rebuilding, but what they are doing is slowly tearing down the sports programs to have more classroom awareness and less sports awareness.....In all fairness to Amat that is the way it should be education first and sports second but some parents have it the other way around nowadays. Thinking scholorship or Bragging rights on Friday nites,, that their kid plays on a winner. this goes to the parents with less talented kids as well ..they are on a team warming the bench and looking good in a uniform but the players that do play and are bringing in the wins are giving these parents bragging rights but what does their kid do for the team?....it has all gone egotistical for parents and football.......Amat could care less and at this point they still rake in all that money from kids that go there for education and they rake in the money from the parents that want to see their kid wear that Golden A on his helmet while he warms the bench.....the tradition of Amat football is over and is not recovering any time soon if not at all.........this from a alumni that lives accross the street from the school. God Bless you All.

SEMI-BREAKING NEWS: QB Junior Tamayo transfers to Los Altos ...

Comments

This is my first time posting : Many people our talking about the recruitment process that the local high schools are doing in the near future
When Bishop Amat wakes up they will have nothing in there lower levels programs ( Freshman or JV )
football teams example: Youth Programs that High Schools are involved in : Charter Oak Chargers JAA > Charter Oak High School , Covina Vikings JAA> Covina High School , East LA Bobcats JAA >Cantwell High School , West Covina Bruins JAA > South Hills School } Bishop Amat Lancers ARE NOT involved in any youth programs and they should be involved w/ there surrounding cities like La Puente Warriors or West Covina Bruins now this leads me to my next point. When Hell week starts
at Bishop they will lose 10 to 12 kids because they will be transfering out to South Hills,Charter Oak,Covina , Cantwell , Los altos
You would think someone at Bishop would ask themselves why our all these players leaving after they alreay paid for Summer Program $250.00
Registration for 2007 $300.00 1st payment(July) for Tution $520.00 .2nd payment ( Aug.) for Tution 520.00 Sponser form $180.00. The point of the matter is there is MAJOR problem at Bishop and its not Local Coaches Recruiting practices I hope we can all agree with that . I strongly say this if parents and players are happy with Bishop NO Coach could have stole any player out of Bishop I hope we can agree with that statment too . Its late now this I will have a web site in place next week addressing the conduct of players and staff at Bishop . Please sent this to Varsity HC( Verti)JV HC ( Canalles) Frosh HC ( Parker)They all had there chance to keep key players in there program but I can say this they just DONT CARE and they rely only on Bishop name NOT there Hard Work . God Bless everyone in there difficult decision to stay or go to a different school

Regarding the FANatic Challenge....Realizing that some might consider it a "throw-down" challenge it's true intend was not created to ridicule or demean any teams athletes. Plenty of teams in the SL will field quality athletes in 2007.....the difference is that although athletic and possibly talented they still will be missing the quality of being experienced. Year in and out, experience dictates the quantum leap for those select few that achieve success.

(IE.....the 2006 SL Champs-Damien Spartans)

PLAID LAD

Cop/Coach,

We differ on who was the better team that night on the field (DHS/CHHS game). Damien won by a distraction. You must agree, if the fans hadn't stormed the field and both lines were set, would Mendrum have walked untouched across the goal line? Don't think so. Game would have gone the other way.

Listen, I have unwillingly become a "What if" arm chair QB as I protest the silly debate over whether Glendora should have won the Covina game with Mcd out the 1st qtr. It's really unfair of many to apply this "what if" BS to Glendora and not other teams...as I said before, this is nothing more than double standards. So if we are to give Damien the unquestionable victory against CH, then we should also give the unquestionable victory to Glendora. I know you will agree.

As far as the GHS/DHS game goes, bad night for Glendora, great night for Damien. The Tartans D had done amazing things most of the season, but not that night. It was obvious to many, the boys were not all together that evening. Also, while it was not reported in the press (no real surprise there), Glendora D was missing a key player or two. To me, the better team that night did win.

Again, the press reports Mcd or Johnson or even Mendrum out, but when Glendora is missing their key player or two, nothing is said. When Edmund is out several qtrs due to a ankle injury, don't you think that would affect the out come of a game? Does it get reported?

You are a great blogger, cop/coach.I share your passion and comittment to the boys. My son was on the JAA team with Barbone and Vega.
Henry was and is an awesome coach instilling great passion to succeed in our boys.

FANatic has left the Blog...but I will be back!

Short People,

NICE!

PLAID-LAD Walk quietly and carry a big stick??That is DAMIENS motto.Who predicted their success last year? mmmmmmmm?

FANatic...I have to take exception to your comment about Damien stealing the win versus Chino Hills. Were you there? I was. The line was set. What you don't see in the YouTube video (and what no CHHS fan will admit) is that the Husky players, staff and fans had stormed the field prior to the game ending. There were still 3-4 seconds on the clock when this happened. It was prior to Damien snapping the ball. Several CHHS players were distracted by that and Mendrun went in untouched. If anyone cost Chino Hills the game it was their fans premature celebration.

Now as to the challenge you and PLAID-LAD have thrown out, how do you expect Damien fans to respond? Sure Glendora may be better than last year position by position, but that same stout defense gave up 33 points to Damien. Did the Tartans suddenly get 20 points better than Damien? Damien lost Mendrun and Hile, but they return a strong core of skill players and add some great talent to it. This Tartan team will be strong, but I can't see them as so much better that the Spartans.

Dude, I am not bagging on Glendora. I have coached half of that team. I love Drew Kaluzny and have defended him here and elsewhere. I can't wait to see if younger players like Aaron Stockham and Andre Holmes can step up. I was hanging out with Robert Horn's dad a few weeks ago. In 2008 my daughter will be a freshman at Glendora.

Trivia...for those who don't know...the Barbone/Vega debate is ironic. Both kids were teammates at Glendora Jr. All-American. They had a powerful team led by Coach Henry Rodriguez. Several current Damien players were on those teams as well.

MTC

It says she's 5'5". Wouldn't that be a little awkward being that she's got you by 4". lol

Response to: booya and Plaid-Lad

No Barbone is not my son. I am only a fan of his from a far but being a supporter of our local high school football scene for many years now and watching both your son and Barbone play last year I thought your candid insight would be intriguing to read considering how passionate you are about Glendora, the game, and your background experience with youth football. I am aware from your comments in the past that you have seen many of these young men compete since they were young so I was wondering how you felt about the two of them entering the football season because in my humble opinion both are arguably going to be the best two running backs in the Valley after everything is said and done at the end of this football season. Please, I hope your not upset about me asking you a few questions about your son but I read below on earlier posts that someone said that was your son and so I was just asking an honest question because I think you are one of the few men who actually likes to dialogue about “real” topics. I respect your privacy and any anonymity you may feel you need at this point though so I am not offended if you do not feel comfortable discussing the comparisons between the two young men so again I wish you, your son, and the team nothing but the best this football season. Good Luck!

The only reason it's been quiet for CO is because South Hills and Los Altos have had some major movement this summer. And Amat has had some attrition. CO has basically stayed the same. We all know they're going to be good, so there's nothing to do but wait.

Aram

Is CO's new motto "Walk quietly and carry a big stick."???

You think he's the only coach to ever say that? Yet the hits keep going up and I bet there's nary a person at CO or anywhere else who doesn't know exactly what's going on here.

Aram, Have you heard that Big Lou at CO has directed his players and their familys etc.. not to view your blog? Hey CO is this true? Oh forgot you cant reply..but we know your reading this...

Since it looks a little slow in here today I thought I would light a spark and show you guys what we all are missing………

SGV STATMAN

1. PLAID LAD IS NOT RELATED TO VEGA. I AM THOUGH.
2. IS BARBONE YOUR SON?

Chino Hills High School: They have a legnadary coach who knows how to motivate players and build a booster club.

He is known for bringing D-Bar to recognition around these parts. I give him the utmost respect.

As fas as Chino Hills Football, Im sorry to say they have achieve great heights in football, but they have no where near fulfilled the potential they have had. With the talent pool they have, they should have made more noise during the playoffs. Yeah, they face teams like Hart, Valencia, Canyon in there division, but if they are that loaded, why haven't they won.

They will probably win their league or at least tie, but how good can they be in (division 2).

They're Good, but they are not Great.

Aram, I fully exspect the Chino Hills game to be the biggest and best, as far as, competition goes. They are always prepared! BTW, why don't we hear more about how Damien stole the game last season in the last few seconds against CH. In my opinion, the better team lost that night on the score board.

I hate to differ with the Big Guy, but I truly believe Glendora will take 1st in the SL followed closely by Chino Hills. Damien will have a hard battle for 3rd. We don't hear much about DB, Chino and Ayala...doesn't mean something isn't brewing!

Mark my words Aram, while you may not think so, you will be writing alot about this Tartan D in future columns as they dominate SL.

As far as Vega goes, while he may not rush for the top yards, he was and will be instrumental for the team's success. Edmund will be the first to say, if it wasn't for Vega's lead blocks, he would not nearly have the yards he did last season. Vega reminds me of a Larry Csonka of the Miami Dolphins during their hayday. He will plow down the middle for tough yards and occassionally escape for the big one. He was so impressive in the Rowland game. I think every team needs a Vega type...really an un-song hero!

FANatic with sleep in his eyes, drinking his morning brew!

Huskie08:
Ya i remember those names, what of them?

Response to: PLAID-LAD

Two questions outlined for you to answer:

1. Vega is your son? I would actually consider him a fullback myself and don't anticipate him getting the bulk of the carries but regardless I am looking forward to watching your son play again this year and he definitely is a hard-nosed tough throwback kind of football player.

2. Compare your son to Barbone the fullback from San Dimas? Both schools run an explosive Wing-T offense so does that mean your son will be the featured back this year like Barbone at San Dimas?

Actually, I just read what I wrote and there are three questions for you to answer sorry and good luck to your son and to the entire Glendora football team.

FANatic,

All HS teams have to make replacements on an annual basis. But some do start with a better nucleus.

So on that note, I don't think anybody will touch Chino Hills this year. I think they have the most KEY returnees back and as good as Glendora is, you can't think they'll simply push Chino Hills around. Plus, the Huskies just got Kevin Bonilla over there to play with his former national champion Pop Warner/JAA teammates.

In my opinion, the race is for place between Glendora and Damien.

Yay Plaid-Lad, chs first game I believe, this win will come without the asterick of past victories against chs.

Response 2: GHS naysayers

I've used up too much gray space on this blog defending what some naysayers state will never happen in 2007.

In 2006 the SL had a grip of talented athletes that produced success stories each week.

In 2007 the SL will debut a different talent pool and still remain a premiere league.

The SL teams last year that experienced success on the grid-iron may not experience those same achievements this year.....Why not one might ask?

The answer to the above question focuses on the returning athletes that will continue to hone their assigned skilled positions as experienced seniors.

The SL by no means, is depleted of athletic talents.....rather, it will expose good athletes with little to no varsity experience. Included in that re-grooming GHS also stands.

Unfortunately, some SL teams will experience a re-build more then others.

Fortunately, for GHS this yearly process will not be as severe as it's opponents will experience.

Therefore, GHS will host a largely experienced SENIOR team at skilled positions on D and O.

The advantage of this process goes to GHS.

It can't be explained any better then that!

PLAID-LAD

do any of you ghs fans remember the names "michael harris" "corey harkey" "wade oneil"

betty boob the playoffs start in november...a lot of teams make the playoffs

the big boys play in december (semi-finals, finals)

i think your brownies are burning better get back in there

Aram,

Would it be fair to say that EVERY SL team this season will need to fill in the "blanks" of out going senior studs? Would it also be fair to say that "it's completely fair to wonder if ANY SL TEAM can complete the equation".

I've studied 06 rosters for each of the SL teams looking at what shoes need to be filled. I am convinced that the two above statements can be said for ALL SL teams. Would you agree? if not, show me where I am wrong.

FANatic still on the Blog, but not for long!!

Mikey Clone, Aram and Tart Mom et al...

I'm really sick about the "what ifs" regarding the Covina, Charter Oak and Rowland games. These are wins - wins - wins. PERIOD!

Damn, has anybody, including Aram, ever mention the key Tartan players missing in action during our 3 loses last season? Why, oh, why, do we constantly hear about Mcd, Johnson or anybody else missing after they lose to the Tartans.

Isn't any of our players key to our victories or losses. Am I to believe those other teams are so one dimensional (Mickey is that spelled right?)that if one stud sits out...the world comes to an end. If thats what you believe, I truly feel sorry for those great teams. I'd make sure Mcd doesn't get a cold or Johnson a hang nail...whoops there goes the season!

This is truly a double standard if there ever was one. Don't take these victories away from the team. They had a awsome season last year considering, as Aram elluded to, needing to replace almost every meaningful position on the field. The team played with a majority of Jr starters. While this may have made things stacked against us last season, it makes for a tremendously experienced team this year.

Still, no one will take up the FANatic challenge. WHAT DOES THIS TELL YOU!!!

Thanks MTC and Pladdy for telling it as it is. Welcome Tart mom!

FANatic has left the Blog with a nasty attitude!

and Mike no one disputes that covina most likjely would have won that game with their qb, not even my son or his friends that play at ghs. The chs coach didnt play him and the scoreboard says we won, that was theyre decision.

My husband and I have no issue with you, he knows you and has talked to you before, you both got along but we have never been here before let alone written anything.

Posted by: Mike the Clone at July 25, 2007 06:59 PM,

Thats my point, the ch coach didnt play their qb so the win is valid. stop whining colts we won because your qb wasnt out there but we still won, check the scoreboard. If he was out there we most likely would have lost but he wasnt so again quit whining and ask your coach how you can play football without a qb

Tart Mom

Excuse me Mr Tolegian, but there are FOUR quarters to play you just can't show up for three of them. If your "spent" in three quarters then time to "jet" back to the practice field and "Bama" till the sun goes down.

And one other thing for you Covina apologists out there....

Covina showed up to the field to play didn't you. Don't give me that "Oh our best guys weren't playing bull-non-sense" ...Not my "prob" next time stay home and forfeit.

You want bragging rights against us you should have played your best guys. Not the "bagpipers" fault you had discipline problems.

Until you take it to us, go back to the corner, sit and shut up!

SCOREBOARD BABY!

GOOD NIGHT NOW!

Mike the Clone

The C town kids would have only won in a fist fight, no one disputes that. Covina would most likely have won with the QB out on the field but the CHS coach decided not to play him so in reality we won. Even my son and his FB player friends from G agree with this.

just to let you guys know...

if you were wondering why so many glendora fans are posting right now its because there makin up for lost time...you see they dont get to say much in december so july and august they go nuts to balance it out,

isnt cif in december? glendora was in the cif playoffs, werent they?

Aram,

You have said before about the Covina game being a big question last year. No, 3 turnovers did not lead to the Tarten's 21-0 first Q lead. There was only one (maybe 2, but I don't think so). The "third" one you are thinking of was the first play of the second Q when it was already 21-0 when a Glendora DB picked off a throw from MCD! Yes, they dominated the rest of the 2nd quarter from there, but the ENTIRE 2nd half was even until the Tartens last solid drive and then their D-stand. Game Tartens (w/o excuses). As for this year, the O backfield is young/less experienced but we in Tarten land who have seen some of the action feel good about the talent their. We'll see how they perform come game-time but these youger studs will be great players at some point to be sure...hopefully it happens this season. On D, well we've heard endlessly about that, and for good reason. Quality AND experience. You mention the front 7, yes, but the back 4 are probably the MOST experienced as a whole with 5 guys who played and started at some point last season. What's next? Pads? Can't wait!

just to let you guys know...

if you were wondering why so many glendora fans are posting right now its because there makin up for lost time...you see they dont get to say much in december so july and august they go nuts to balance it out

Here's my two cents:

I thought '06 would be a rough for G-Hi. As I said in the '06 preview, the team had to replace its leading passer, rusher, receiver, tackler and sacker. I can honestly say that Glendora proved me right on the field and wrong on the scoreboard. And I think that's a huge accomplishment!

The Tartans owned the scoreboard against league champs in Rowland, Covina, Charter Oak and Duarte! But they just as easily could've lost three of those games and in two of them (Covina and Charter Oak) I'm still not convinced the Tartans were the better team. Covina played without McDonough in the first quarter, and three turnovers led to a 21-0 G-Hi lead. The rest of the game was 14-7 in Covina's favor and that includes a drives stopped on downs at Glendora's 1-, 19- and 21-yard lines (please verify, but I think that's right). Glendora's 7 came on a nice drive, but only after it was obvious that Covina was a spent team after dominating most of the final three quarters with nothing to show for it.

The Tartans played a very banged up Charter Oak team that was without standout Michael Johnson because of a questionable suspension. We all know what Johnson meant to CO and we also all know CO in November/December was much different than CO in September/October.

The Rowland game could've gone either way.

I think the one common denominator in all of this, and it should be what makes Tartan fans proud and excited for this year, is your team showed major heart. The goal line stand against Covina, when McD was carrying the ball, really says something. The comeback against Rowland when the team was dead in the water. The final drive against Charter Oak when you had to have it. Those are all signs of heart ... the kind of heart usually reserved for veteran teams who know how to win.

Entering '07, G-Hi undeniably has the foundation of a great season via its strength up front on both sides of the rock. A great front seven in high school, no matter how much speed there is to go with it, can go a long way. SEE EL DORADO LAST YEAR. Outside of WR Matt Contreras, there wasn't a ton of speed on that team. But they were like hitting a wall.

When you have a great core like Glendora has, you simply need to fill in the blanks. If Glendora somehow adds speed to its power, lookout! But with Edmond gone and a semi-new QB taking over, it's completely fair to wonder if the Tartans can complete the equation.

PLAID-LAD

Hey Big Daddy...

Answer the question.. Are your really serious or did Football 101 go over your head. LOL

Regarding GHS's offensive abilites...I would wager that GHS pounds more yards with Vega at the fullback position then any other fullback/halfback in the entire SGV.

Response 2: FANatic

Fanny as improbable as it would seem, you have hit a pinacale with your "2007 Challenge."

Who would think that no one had any answers to your challenge. Who would think that one question stumped the unstumpable(s).

Bottom line...GHS will prove everything in 2007, which I, (you), plus others have said all along (in different ways)...that this is the "Year of the Tartan."

Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to serve up sausage for Pladdy at the Tartan victory party on Oct. 19th!

Pladdy what kind of mustard do you like with your sausage or do you prefer chino...I mean chili? Is it "Hills...shire" sausage you desire?

Still rollin...FANatic on the rampage!!

Re FANatic at July 25, 2007 03:36 PM

Saying that GHS will beat Chino hills is like saying plaid lad doesnt enjoy a sausage, they are both falsehoods. Of course CH will beat GHS and of course plaid lad likes sausage.

Bruce

CHHS,

What is the latest on Kevin Bonilla the kid that transfered from Bishop Amat. How is he fitting in and is he projected to start?...is he still playing free safety and will he see any time at RB on the O side of the ball.?

FANatic at July 25, 2007 03:36 PM

AA might be able to help

CHHS

Agreed. You don't win games at lineman competitions just like you don't judge teams on the internet because you SAY so.

The playing field is where games are won or lost. Chino Hills will have to wait till Oct. 19th on your turf to see what the Tartans are made of.

I predict CH will have all they can handle with the Tartans D. I know you think otherwise. But, thats ok. Maybe you guys won't come prepared and the Tartan victory will be easier than expected. Of course, I know that won't be the case...You guys are a very good team, year after year. You will study and study the Tartan D and come prepared to the best of your ability. The Tartan victory will be sweater, because we know you will give us all you got!!

Hey whats happening to all you bloggers that want to participate in the FANatic challenge. I don't see any lines forming. Could it be you are all talk with nothing to support your case of having a much better team than last year?

Of course any sensible person knows with the "superstudom" lost from graduating seniors, not one SL team can say their offense is in better shape than last season...not one. Back then to the question, how well do you think you will do against the Tartan D.

I got to stop with the wine collers this late in the day! I'm starting to feel alittle fiesty!!

FANatic on a roll!

Oscar Robles grew up and played baseball and football with many kids and at many schools in the valley. He and his family are really nice people to know, talked to them at the all star game and as usual just good down to earth people. The SGV is a small community, too many on here try to turn it into a bloodbath between the kids when in reality most of them are friends.

HEY ARAM

I HEARD FROM A GIRL AT WORK THAT HER NEPHEW JACOB OLIVAS USED TO GO 2 ELEMENTARY AND JR. HIGH WITH OSCAR ROBLES. I HEARD THEY USE TO BE BEST FRIENDS GROWING UP. WHAT A WEIRD EVENT ROBLES AND OLIVAS GROWING UP AND PLAYING EACH OTHER IN FOOTBALL AND THEIR SCHOOLS ARE RIVALS. THATS A GOOD ARTICAL TO RIGHT ABOUT ARAM.

hey mr c-town

you want 2 to start comparing Robles 2 olivas thats like comparing a lion and a mouse. Robles is 10 times more of a qb than olivas. i saw olivas play jv last year he was decent but in jv. thats jv not varsity.u cant compare the 2. and if Robles is so bad what happen when he threw tose 2 3 touchdowns agianst the almighty covina team. please that young man picked covina aprt deep and short when he was given the time. but ill give it to u guys robles was on his back in the second half because the line wasnt blocking.

im not trying to bag on olivas but he wont ever be as good as robles there is no comparison. olivas is a good jv qb not varsity he doesnt have the arm strenth nor the knowledge of the game. looks like covina threw a linbacker 2 go play qb.

cia,
please dont wake the co parents up, dont you know the only good thing about a co parent is when there quiet.

FANatic at July 25, 2007

Nobody debates that Glendora has size and some players may be stronger, but you don't win games at Lineman comps!

Your LB speed will be tested. Your slow now without pads, we'll see with pads... Slower!

Tartar Sauce,

i know your joking. the only team on your list which may even be close is chino hills. the others will fall to glendora no sweat. obviously you know absolutely nothing about the d to make stupid comments like the one you made.

is there no one out there up to the fanatic challenge or all of you nothing more than cry babies. just as i thought.

You are right you should kill Covina. Glendora you will lose to CO, West Ranch, El Dorado, Damien and Chino Hills, with Etiwanda being a toss up. your defense is not that good to hang with these teams.........

d colts,

that was funny. do you really think the colts have any chance this year against glendora? omg (haha). glendora has beat you guys how many times now? even at your very best, you lose to glendora. stay away from whatever your drinking.

chhs:

I wouldn't rely on what you saw defensively at passing league. Several key D players have not appeared at any passing league games including Horn and Beckwith. Others have been missing as well. Early season bumps and strains have sidelined these players until it really counts.

Coach P knows that players like Horn are full force always and why risk your season with early injuries. Case and point, receiver Russell Johnson was hit hard on the side of the head (blindsided) recently at passing league and was badly bruised. Pre-season last year, the Tartans suffered numerous loss of studs due to injuries.

As far as quality of O & D lines, well GHS took first place in the Los Osso Lineman Comp recently against some pretty impressive teams. If you overlook experience and if we use this as our only barometer,I would like to hear about other successes with SL teams in lineman comps.

I'm not comfortable nor am I confident that the play calling mistakes of last year will not re-appear again. But, I am extremely certain that this year the coaches have the very best players/tools to work with and at this stage, I wouldn't trade away any of them from my "reality football" team!

FANatic has left the Blog!

damien rocks......Read the post again... Pladdy said GHS pounds more yards WITH Vega at fullback blah blah blah.. Hey Pladdy.. Back off on the Redbulls. jees........

Your true test will come against Covina game one. With no McD and Covina supposedly in a rebuilding stage, a loss by Glendora here and that will tell what your season is going to be like....Glendoras schedule is a tough one and for you Tartan fans to think your D is going to hold up all season long and dominate teams?, you are mistaken.

Plaid Laid and MTC,

Marty experiments too much and allot of that costs you games and resentment from your fans and parents. he had no clue and could not coach against Redlands last year....horrible game plan.........why would you think his approach would change now.....same shi- different stink.

The reality of the Glendora Defense will be when they hit a team with real speed.

Glendora DOESNT have real team speed!

Linebackers that I saw in passing league are slow to cover outside patterns and can't stay with a real burner and DB's getting burned to often.

Their QB is VERY inconsistent

Cant wait to play them!

i say meet the fanatic challenge or shut the f*** up!

PLAID-LAD

Answer the question and quit giving us your BS

Are you saying your boy is going to lead the entire SGV in rushing?

Mikey the Clone,

I'll have to agree with you buddy, knock out the "play calling mistakes" of last year, the O will have fighting chance. Comparatively speaking to other SL teams, I like our chances!

As far as the D is concerned, all I can do is laugh at the haters. This D is already a proven commodity. Come on, we already know first hand about the strength/speed/experience of Niles, Horn, Kovar, Nichols, C. Young, R. Young, Beckwith, Edwards, Maraz and more! Who wants to be the first to stand up and say these guys are not the real thing?

How would you like to face these linebackers? Horn (he's the Pete Rose of Football), Niles (like a brick wall) and C. Young (i'd rather face a head on collison with a bus). And thats only if you get around Kovar (slim chance that will happen).

Mike, has the Crazy Horse opened yet? or is it going to be Marie Callendars again?

Aram, Grand Burger' Pastrami sandwich is much better than the Hat - - big, jucy and leaner!
