« GAME WEEK: Aram and Reg have a mid-summer 2-Minute Drill (video) ... | Main | Aram declared OUT of Friday's Hall of Fame Game ... »

Happy Fourth Day of July ...

These guys are thinking about blowing up the East's front seven ...

... meanwhile, these guys are thinking about lighting up the West's secondary.

And while that's going on, the West's coach is wondering about the East ...
"I don't know what the East squad has, but it's hard to imagine them having a better backfield than ours," West coach Joel Murphy said. "You have two guys with different styles who do what they do so well. There's a reason they were hyped-up and written about all year, and now I know why."

It all makes for a fireworks (not really) show on July 6 in the Five Points.

Aubrey Haynes has not practice with st.paul all spring or summer, he is still trying to recover from his knee surgery , and other injuries sustained at Diamond Ranch , they ran him till the wheels feel off...If Diamond Ranch is so much better without Aubrey , then why are the coaches still trying to get him to go back?

I think someone is bias towards DR...wow I think his opinion is something to

hotsause,

There was another SH QB, who was that? I've seen him throw before, pretty good kid.

Bracketology,
Thanks for the 411 on the Edison tournament as I was wondering how the Huskies fared with the big boys, sounds like SH. represented the SGV well
over there, nice job on beating S.O. Notre Dame, only problem is they know who you are now, you might have woke a sleeping giant lol. Take it easy on our WC. Bulldogs this year will you. just kidding lol.

RESULTS OF SOUTH HILLS FROM THE BATTLE OF THE BEACH INVITATIONAL AT EDISON HS IN HUNTINGTON BEACH

SH made it to the semifinals before losing to Carlsbad (BTW, they were 14-0 in D-1 San Diego Section last year) 18-12.

In pool play SH defeated J. Serra (28-0), Chaparrel (32-14) before losing to Edison 26-19 and defeated (get this Husky Fans) Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 7-6 in the quarterfinals.

Something tells me that HC Kevin Rooney at SO Notre Dame is very happy to be scrimmaging with SH this season at District Field and the players at SOND know all about SH now... All in all, it was a great week of competition for the Huskies...

hotsauce I was sitting with a former varsity HC and yes Dean locks in on his recievers. But that's what Passing league is for, Best of luck to Dean...other than that he has all the tools. But that's a big no no...

As far as Willison being slow on reads and such..did you see the laser he threw to Wells high up in traffic..where only Wells had a shot at the ball? That's a kid trying to leapfrog the 2 QBs ahead of him. My money is on Willison. Best of luck to all 3.

I liked the DR QB...he's kinda looks like a LB but he's a gamer and throws very well.

Hey best of luck to ANY QB with the nuts to get under center!

I watched south hills games yesterday annd wanted to commentabout those great qbs over there. the offense i think is plugging along. with all the talk of the defense be so awsome i think that was the weakpoint.for the 3 quaterbacks i think it is actually 2 qbs(parham and dean) parham looks verry atletic, someones who is going to take off and run more than sit back ans throw. with dean i see him as a small but bigger kevin mort. he has the same armstrengh and looks as if he can pick apart a defense rather than just run. as for willison i didnt see much of him but he looked to be the one locking on his recievers, i also heard his dad complainig on the sidelines about playing time. he also looked extremly slow feet and reads but great arm. its guna be interesting...

I saw all the games. St. Bony had a hard time with Diamond Ranch, played ok with SH and controlled Amat. Where was their running back? Dorian is good, but did stand out all that much. BA and LA better keep eye on DR. Coach looked like Pete Carroll directing his team, laughing with players and celebraing their drives. It is obvoious Layton and staff were satisfied with their play and know they have more in hiding when pads comes on (real football). Amat looked confused at times and coaches did not look on the same page. SH is good, but top in the valley? St. Bony was good, but should be better with the star RB in the backfield. I see why players left Amat for DR and LA. Haynes leaving is a huge mystery? What was he thinking...? One only knows, but DR didn't look worried. It might be Haynes' lost. Chris Rix was on the field. How did he feel about seeing his team? Which team? Him and Layton were talking between games? What was said? Interesting. Layton is known for bringing in the coaches. As for scores, know one appeared to keep score, except for the people on the sidelines. I guess we can't wait for pads.

Aram...I'm surprised. How many players will Diamond Ranch lose this year... Haynes? And like Joe Mo from SEM it will be a mistake. How many players will Amat lose this year 10 at least plus those that will not come. With the 10 that left Amat would be very very good at the skill positions. Plus Los Altos is still a public vs public school dynamic and the "newness" of Diamond Ranch and the level of competition they play will eventually cut into Los Altos talent base. In my opinion....much like Chino Hills cut into Chino's...is all I'm saying. I was at SH and DR looks very polished and is on the come for sure. And when parents see the difference in attitude and facilities...well the rest is simple...It's a matter of $$$$$$ vs cents/sense.

No disrespect to any school just mentioning the differences between LA, BA and DR.

As far as Haynes. I don't know the facts on why he left I only wish him well.

Where was the great Tony Adams of Diamond Ranch yesterday?

"Amat and Los Altos better try harder keeping their talent???"

Yeah OK, meanwhile Diamond Ranch's leading rusher from last season (Aubrey Haynes) will be carrying the rock for St. Paul.

Pot: Hey kettle, you're pretty black.
Kettle: Hey pot, so are you.

I could not agree with you more, "AGAIN".....So. Hills did not look like a bowl team...you are right , altho we did not see their lineman...but from what I can see and we are both not being biased here they did not appear to be overpowering....Wells helps and will be a great one for them but what else was there besides the QBS.......defense wise Amat threw short crossing routes on them and had Bogan and some other coach on them for not covering a certain area. Passing league does not mean nothing but refining skills....Amat needs allot of work and so do the rest........yes the 4 and 5th string DB's will not even touch the field for Amat this year.........Altho he was in attendance at this passing league Kevin Bonilla is big time missed in that Amat secondary. Hope Kevin comes back to Amat and rejoins the Team. Losing Wells was big. Losing Bonilla was huge..

Bonny looked great. A whole level higher than everyone else.

South HIlls is going to be tough. Parham was very athletic. Think Mendrun with more speed and strenght. Dean is still locking ON his primary receivers. Willison is just getting started and already would start at most schools. Remember the name..he is going to be awesome....transfer to Mater Dei!

Lenhart is pretty good. The other Amat Qbs are good as well. All are competitive. BUt Amat please ENOUGH with the CYO slant pattern,,,made for ONLY passing league. That's a joke. Everyone plays solid defense and then Amat brings a back or slot slanting in front of what would be 8 Linemen doing battle. St. Bonny's coaches thought that was a joke! And it was.

Diamond Ranch is up and coming. Very very solid, athletic and quick. Bishop Amat and Los Altos better try harder keeping their talent. DR is free and the facilities and coaching staff are top notch. Great place to place football. Same goes for South Hills.

Amats 5th stringers would now be considered their staters right? LOL

Did we not watch the same teams, did amat move the ball after every catch? NO! South Hills decided to move it, which is fine, but if you calculate the amount of yardage they got after the catch then they would of scored (more than once). Its frustrating to see that people cant see that? And I saw those plays where those players got burned. Im sorry to say I believe that was like AMAT'S fifth string corners that went out there. Cause they had a few more than just four corners. But we see what we want to see and not the whole picture. South Hills looked good, but not great. They werent overly powerful and a "BOWL" team like some people have said. I've been around like enough to know a talented team, and this is not one of the most talented SH squads I've seen. They have had better ones. Dont get me wrong they have a QB but they did not seem overly dominating. They will make noise in there division, but in the D1 D2 I dont know. But with pads in real football they would lose to St. Bonnie and Amat, beat D-Ranch. I cant rank a team in passing league. Sorry!

PASSING LEAGUE IT'S JUST T-SHIRTS AND SHORTS ANYONE CAN SCORE AND STOP SOME ONE IT AIN'T NOTHING BUT 7ON7 PRACTICE SO CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE WON IN DECEMBER SO ALL THESE TEAMS DON'T GET TO EXCITED CAUSE MOST OF THEM WILL BE AT HOME ANYWAY WATCHING LIKE THEY DO EVERY YEAR.

It is just passing league, but, there were some good catches and throws going on there. So. Hills QB's looked fast and strong armed (A+ there). You could tell Dorian Wells is the go to guy on Offense when it comes to their passing attack.Dorian had 2 easy touchdowns against Amat DB...do not know if this kid is a first string or second string DB...nonetheless Dorian looked good. Amat never seem to get it in the end zone seeing how they threw short over the middle passes and button hooks, also a little swing to the RB coming out of the backfield......they did throw to the tight end in the middle of the field and looks like Verti is not trying to score touchdowns but trying to play a short possession game, which is not bad. Amat second string DB's against St. Bonnies were horrible getting burned back to back for touchdowns. Thats ok , again it is passing league and the kinks are being worked out. It seemed like the finish was #1 So Hills #2 St. Bonnies #3 Bishop Amat #4 D' Ranch....I could be wrong........It was nice to see the Amat player embrace Dorian Wells as they shook hands at the end of their game. Classy kids those Amat kids....

I was there for the whole passing league. And their seems to be a discrepancy in the Amat vs SH practice. While SH "recorded" (i hope you see the quotes) touchdowns, they also moved the ball everytime their was a catch. On the other hand Amat chose not to move the ball forward after ever reception. Amat catches varied from short to mid-range catches that led to a lot of YAC. thus, creating a lot of yardage, but please keep in mind Amat did not move the ball. Amat had a higher completion percentage the first ten plays vs SH ten plays. SH moved the ball after every catch to get closer to the goal line. They did score twice by moving the ball. Plus SH looked more for the deeper ball compared to Amat. Their philosophy was obviously different. But by watching Amat, if they moved the ball themselves they possibly would of had 2 if not 3 touchdowns. So I really don't know how you can keep score if one team decides to move the ball and the other team doesn't. I think they both did a ok job against each other. But they both have a long way to go. But just like what was stated they had no pads or lineman.

Where is Jeff Chavez playing next season? Citrus with all the rest of the greats? Better be careful not to say to much. Wouldn't want this to get deleted because it stings!!!

Dan,

Steve Ramirez will have an article in tomorrow's paper about the South Hills, Amat, D Ranch, St Bonny four-way. I spoke to him briefly and he said South Hills beat Amat 2-0 and that D-Ranch looked good. He also said "But it's passing league."

So can anyone tell us how South Hills, Amat, St. Bonnie, & Diamond Ranch looked? Did any team stand out or were they pretty even? I passed by
on the way to the Bonita passing league & St. Bonnie & Diamond Ranch both looked like they had some good sized athletes similar to South Hills.

Frank,
good to hear from you, yes we are playing Mater Dei this year, they will probably have their best team in many seasons this year and they will probably be the top ranked team in the Southland
going into the season. Contrast that with us only haveing 3 returning starters on the whole team this year, & you can figure the odds will be stacked against us but the Bulldogs will come ready to play regardless. The team is young & lacks experience but as you saw we do have some athletic kids out there.
Our next passing game is this coming tuesday[7/10] at Baldwin Park, I don't know if it's only us two or if there are other schools throwing
too. Then we throw on Thursday at Bonita & if its like it was today there was 8 to 10 schools there, we threw against Covina,Bonita & Colony today.

if you never seen lavelle peterson run, your in for a surprise and a treat.

Dan as always what a great comment about your WC LB. Seen him at the All Star practices and yes he is tough. No mystery about his work ethic. Really liked the way WC ran practices. Alot of movement, instruction and intensity. You guys playing Mater Dei this year right?

When are WC's passing league games. I would love to see how they are doing and to see an old friend again.

Frank

Dan,

The article was actually written by Steve Ramirez. And you're right about Rosenthal being a throwback. Man, was he awesome in that Rowland game. Wow!

To "you blogged"
Your post is old news, we all know passing league
is no indicater of how good a team is, but its fun for the kids & they still learn from it & benefit from the physical activity that is involved with it, they recieve instruction from the coaches on how they cover on defense or on what they're supposed to do in a certain play.
The qb's learn when they see different defenses,
& they can get their timing on their throws a little more in tune, its something to do & enjoy over the summer, don't be such a hater.

Nice article on the linebackers Aram, its pretty neat to see these kids who once saw each other as enemies to get to know each other & and learn to appreciate & become friends with each other.
I was told that Shaun Rosenthal from WC. was practicing for two hours at the MT. SAC practices
before coming to the all star practices each evening, the coaches at SAC excused him from practice cause they knew he was in the all star
game, but he made both practices anyway, thats the mentality he has for this game, he's another one of those throwback players.

Their's a passing league game at South Hills. Are they playing a real game? and when I say real game are their lineman involve? Are they both wearing pads and ready to hit someone. If not then its just another practice for all the squads present. Everybody knows passing league is totally different from football. In some case its just not real football. Dont get me wrong the athletes show up to play. But playing tag and actually hitting somone are completely different. When you have a 6 foot 4 lineman in front of you trying rampage the QB. I believe its quite different. Bottom line is, football is only football with pads on. Have fun watching two hand touch, let me know if any of these school plays in a real game then maybe it will be worth watching.

Tough to argue that Castaneda shouldn't have made it but then again what about Bonita's Chavez? What about Damien who only has 2 players on the squad after being #1 in the SGV for most of the year. I know there should have been 3 Damien players. Mendrun, Hile and Eschardise but Travis has had a back injury for months and was never going to play. Why should Travis be on the squad if he can not play? Maybe someone else from Damien would have been more deserving given the circumstances.

Either way that was a call that should have been made. De La Torre (All CIF), Harper (USC), Lucero (ALL CIF) would have been more deserving. Either way that sucks big time.

Even though Matt Castaneda played at the 605 allstar game he should be should of least have been considered or at least offered a chance one more time at playing the last "high school" game at this level of his young career. It was not even considered. He's set and He's getting ready for the next level anyways. Matt you will be missed!!!!!!

why would ppl want to see stiffs from amat when st. bonny is on the field????

is darrell scott going to be there??

matt casteneda should of played in the all star game...

There is going to be a passing league tournament at South Hills tomorrow (7/5) at about 4:00. South Hills will be playing St. Bonaventure, Bishop Amat, and Diamond Ranch. I know that we are all waiting to see what happens with Amat vs. South Hills. Come see it!!
