Hate to Jump In part II

GO SGV FOOTBALL and REPRESENT US ALL in CIF

I hate to jump in, and I mean no disrepesct to all those that are faithful to their schools. But truth be told losing, key players like: wells, bonilla, mcbride and probably did hurt the team. But you have to give the Amat staff some credit you dont hear them crying, moaning and so on about it. From what I could tell they just coach on and continue to have those that are loyal to Amat, to work hard and play on. Yeah, this season is big question mark for Amat, but by stopping by their spring scrimmage and seeing them against great teams in passing tournaments, they haven't really lost a bit. They go with what players are their and are making the most of them. I wouldn't be surprised this is big learning curve for the staff, just like it would be for any staff that has taken some hits like this. But in all honesty the coaching staff is more experienced then what people think and they are making some noises as they do it. I only say this cause I have stop by SH, CO, LA and Amat's practices for quite a few years now. And all I can see from Amat is intensity that I havent seen in years. I just hate to say anything bad about anyone, but sometimes second hand information issn't the best. That's why I say stop by any of those teams practices and you could see the improvement Amat has made in one year. You are right they will have to out work and out coach everybody and I believe the staff is willing to put in the work as well. Dont hate just give then a chance.

Baldwin Park Lineman Competition Results #! Baldwin Park #2 Alhambra #3 Moreno Valley #4 Monrovia #5 North Torrance

ARAM, JUST A REMINDER THAT THERE IS A LINEMAN COMPETITION TOMORROW AT B.P.H.S.

GO BRAVES !!!!

AnyMouse,

You need to choose your friends more wisely.
Clones button wearer comments were old and redundant a long time ago. Didn't seem to bother you then, why now?

Would the person who continuously puts posts on here under different monikers who is on the "Clones" nuts please back off, its getting old and redundant...

If you have that much of a Beef with him just go see him in person and hash it out, he might respect that alot more and to be honest its stale and unjustified...

AnyMouse...

Swordsmen

oh no another "button wearer". Someone call Sheriff Mike the Clone.

Joe Amat

Another "button Wearer"? Oh my gosh! We certainly can not deffend our schools without Sheriff Mike The Clone handing out citations for being a button wearer!

Big Bubba

Are you defending Amat? You must then be a "button wearer".

There is no way my son who is a Covina Viking is missing this camp. As an Amat Alum I remember Pernell Taylor and those bone crushing hits. I'm glad to see him coaching and returning to his Alma Mater. This camp looks like a good one.

latest amat transfer, jr. tamayo goes to los altos, maybe what there looking for, any imformation about him, all i know is back up qb last year at amat, weas told not great but good enought to helkp out mcbride running game

My god you people are stupid!!

CA = California
SGV = San Gabriel Valley
OC = Orange County
SFV = San Fernando Valley

What a bunch of F'n retards you are.

Incredible...

Already, you are a fan of california HS.........all teams?.....what a loser and monday morning qb you are......go to the football winner of that time........I guess you are a LB poly and Oaks Christian and Orange Lutheran fan right?...we call fools like you BANDWAGONERS!

Already,

What has Ca High done? not jack sh--

and you bash Amat?

You get Grigsby from us and still fall on your face.

Ca. High is "ALREADY" DONE FOR THE SEASON THEY GOT NO ONE OVER THERE........

AT,

You're doing a great job so keep telling it like it is. That's the ONLY way to do your job. And you have given the amat staff a bit of a pass, so thanks for that. You can't speculate on performance of players that MAY be able to step in. Those guys have to prove it first. And they might do just that. And amat fans can root and cheer and hope for the best. But in all reality it is a REALLY steep mountain to climb and will not come easy. Tradition and history can only get you started on that hike, but it can't keep you going. Fanaticism and myiopia make you slide back down that hill. amat has to work harder AND smarter than the next guy. I think that they are finding that out.

The short term transplant that you replaced at the Trib probably soured amat football a bit. Plus you came in as things were on a bit of a downward trend. As for your previous prep sports writers, I'm guessing that Barrero had pretty good access, huh?

OK - not a fair one because he's an alum.

I bet Laques did alright and you might ask Spoon how he was treated back in the day. I think it's more a function of the personality of the coach at the time, their success, and maybe the pressure they feel, that limits access. It's easy to provide access when things are going well. Personally, I think that that is big-timing you a bit, but once Verti's feet are a little more firmly planted things might change. We hope. Shoot, Pete Carroll offers better media access.

It does seem that football is working and may even have a plan. Hopefully the people at the top are going to buy in and support that plan, otherwise the young guy is swimming up stream. Things may work out well, at least we hope so. Unfortunately many think that we should not have tried to wait for someone to cut their teeth before really got it going again. As you basically said, "the darkest before the dawn". We just hope that we have seen the darkest already.

I just find it interesting that now all of a sudden, Amat has players to "step up" and replace all of their "stars" from last season. If that is so true, then why did Verti and staff not play these replacements this much last season? Sounds like coaching error to me. Like Aram said, with all that supposed "talent" then they should have made the playoffs. I remember many people on this blog last year saying that there were other very talented players who were not getting the opportunity. Those people were shot down by the Lancer supporters who are always on this blog. Only now that all of your "stars" from last season are gone, these players are good enough. What miracle happened to all of these Amat repalcements overnight. Like I said, just wondering. Supporting your team is one thing, but if it looks like B.S. and sounds like B.S., its definitely B.S.

Must be a closet full of rose colored glasses in that household.

Aram,

Point well taken except, things are going to get worse before they get better?...says who? what makes you think they are worse right now? From what your bloggers say?..everyone has a opinion and that is their due right, but there are some of the opinion that Amat is fine and not as bad as some are writing them off to be........such as you. You talk of players leaving the Ramirez, Castaneda, Bryce Mcbride Kevin Bonilla and that we feel it is ok no big loss. That is their (those players) choice and sometimes Amat is not for certain people and parents. Amat cannot force you to stay there just based on a football team. lots go into it. Business is business and when one leaves it is another one opportunity. You think your boss would give a rats ass if you gave him a 2 week notice and said your moving to another paper to write..He would say good luck and move the next guy in to take your place. Our coaches have lots of pride and they play with the cards they are dealt...losing players is never good but it does not only happen or is happening over at Amat. People move for various reason Grades, Divorce, friends. You need to sit down with Verti and and ask who these kids are that replaced these kids that left and you will get the impression from Verti that we did not take a big a blow as everyone is saying here. These kids can play....I guess Amat will not be in your opening top ten before the season starts due to players leaving????...Give these replacements their chance you would be surprised by what has replaced Bonilla McBride and Wells. Do your homework with Verti first and stop listening to your bloggers input..find out first hand.

Big Bubba,

Covering the Dodgers for the entire Los Angeles Newspaper Group is not where they send people who they're worried will get "checked" at a high school event.

Sorry, but I tell it like it is. If doing that in the past gave you the impression that I'm an Amat fan, you misread it. I don't like any one team more than any other. Truth be told, I'd like to see Amat return to its glory days, not because I'm a fan, but because I think it's great for the Valley.

But this attitude that SOME Amat people like you have, that it's OK to be losing players like this, is precisely what has you guys in big trouble. Jesse Ramirez, Matt Castaneda, Bryce McBride ... need I go on? You're not good enough anymore to simply say "We'll get along just fine without you." I don't think any high school program these days can afford to do that, but Amat does it in a lot of cases. History speaks for itself.

About Coach Verti - I think he knows who's leading the "Give Verti a chance" charge. I could be all over him in print saying they made the wrong choice, but as I've said in the past, he needs to be given a long enough time frame before ANYBODY can make judgements. Also, he stepped into a bad situation, that's seemingly going to get worse before it gets better. But I think he has a plan if this upcoming camp is any indicator.

By the way, Amat's football program has NEVER been welcoming with open arms. I think I speak for recent Tribune prep sports writers when I say this. Basketball, baseball, softball and most other sports, definitely. Football, not in my tenure. Hell, Coach Wiard gave us amazing access the past few years, even in weeks when he was preparing for a state championship game!

I go watch a lot of schools ... I get invited out to watch practice by a lot of coaches. Most of the time, the coaches come up to me and they answer questions about who this player is and who that player is.

"Check this guy out."

"Watch that guy over there."

"You'll be writing about this guy a lot."

I go to Charter Oak and Big Lou might miss practice because we're yapping so much. I go to South Hills and Coach Bogan comes and talks to me for a half hour. I go to Los Altos and Gano introduces me to everyone on the team. I talk for hours on the phone with Podley, Maggiore, Koffler, Singiser, Zavala (DC at Northview), Crutchfield, DT, Zernickow, Snyder, Sanchez and so on.

Not saying that the football coaches at Amat are hard to deal with. Coach Verti has always made himself available for interviews and gotten the players we needed for features and returned phone calls. But outside of DiFiori coming over during a practice to point out some guys, I could never use the term "welcoming with open arms) about Amat. And it's OK. I understand that these guys are under a ton of pressure.

I'm a fan of CA high school football. OC, SGV, SFV... I removed the blinders years ago, and just enjoy the players for what they put out there.

Already,

Comes in here and calls me Myopic?......because of Amat?....but does not mention what school he reps?.....who's Myopic?

Amat is Amat and we may be rebuilding according to the experts here but you cannot take away the storied and gloried past that this school has had. Rich with Tradition and the great players return to give back to the school. The history and tradition of Amat Football will continue. This camp brings parents and Kids from all over and it does boost and fire up morale and pride with existing players. These players will tell you what it means to lace them up and be a Lancer on Friday Nites. They Instill the Amat pride in our current and soon to be Varsity players. Come out Sat. the 21st and see what the Tradition and dedication to the Amat football program really means. These players bring allot to the table. Touching that Golden "A" on the wall in the locker room before you hit the field sends shockwaves thru your system. These pros and college players have allot to share and talk about during their Amat playing days, just ask them...

Let's get this season started already, so big bubba's lancers can take their lumps, and we won't have to listen to his myopic babbling anymore.

that camp at bishop. thats how they get there players. a lot of schools do that. diamond bar used to do it for basketball. very smart. very smart!

Passing league,

I do compare them.....Lopez may not have Wells size but he has the same quickness and catches the ball the same if not better........when it comes to attitude Lopez far outweighs Wells in that area....Lopez a team player v.s a I want to pad my stats player.

Aram,

Heck with all the bashers of Amat and now you Aram as one of them, yes fans are needed to come in and defend a school that has gotten a bad rap for what players leaving?...and for a few Amat backers that come in here and bash other schools Amat is garbage...then you jump in Aram and say that they better get it together and that they better find a answer even tho they are 0-0. Then claim something I said about amat wont be that bad as "INUENDOS"......I would be really surprised if Verti gives you the time of day when it comes time for interviews. You already got sent packing by Coach Q. and they put you at Dodger Stadium instead of the All Star Bassett game.Hmmmmm I wonder why? The homies were going to check you?.......For someone who used to have Amat at the highest opinion for a good or bad team you really have shown your true colors towards this school this year (and one game has not been played) and have given the impression that Amat is going to fall flat on their face. If coach Verti reads this Blog and I am sure he does or some of his assistants do read it for a fact. Aram the Amat people and coaching staff are not going to welcome you with open arms like before.........keep digging yourself a deeper hole......

Dan,

I heard something about Samoan kid (s), but I don't know if they're from Texas. We're really grasping at straws now. I really have to see WestCo soon.

Mr.Info.,
I've been going to the passing league games, I've heard twice from you now about a transfer from Texas but I haven't seen or heard of him at any of the practices or passing league games, I also haven't heard or seen anything about an Amat transfer, I'm just wondering where your getting your info. What are their names or positions?

Anonymous at July 11, 2007

I would have to agree that Glendora's challenge is going to be in the backfield and QB spot. Passing league isn't real game situations and QB Kluz really hasn't been tested.

Lancer Legend Camp,
Thanks for the info. It sure looks like it will be successful with all those NFL/Former NFL/college stars there.

That website really does help in selling that program. That poster will look good in my kids room. Will they be on sale at the camp?

He's a fan. It came out with the whole "Amat will shine" tagline. I had the vibe when I read some original "Big Bubba" takes and they were laced with "Amat won't be that bad" inuendo.

It's OK, we likey fans here.

Big Bubba you are funny comparing Lopez to Wells explains your ignorance....enough said...

Big Bubba,

That i will agree with you everyone is 0-0 at start of season. You need to get out to see a passing league or practice before you judge Glendora's offense. While QB kluz may be a jr this year, he has had as much varisty experience as most of the QB's in league. He played an awful lot last season. He has a very strong arm and can scramble. I think the Tartans are in a better QB postion this year compared to last. The backup QB is also excellent, but I don't know his name. I think the Tartan receivers are overall better this year than last. The real question will be the running game.

Returner Vega will crunch up the middle for big yards and several RB's with excellent speed will probably platoon.

You are right Aram it was huge to lose those three players. Losing Wells well that was out of Amats control they stood by their morals. Losing Bonilla and Bryce was really huge. Bryce left because of Verti not showcasing or helping him with college offers. Bonilla moved out and I am sure finds it easier to go to public school around the corner from his house not to mention he played his JAA days over in Chino Hills so there are ties there. Because you do not know them by name there are some real hot juniors at these positions this year you will be surprised Aram. Amat had the talent the last 2 years to make the playoffs...DiFioris last year was a coin toss. Verti first year was rookie written all over it. Verti is stronger this year and he will prove everone wrong and make the playoffs this year....Aram you'll be back on the Amat Wagon before long.....this team has talent and will make it this year......Bryce Bonilla and Wells, huge loss but not a huge disaster like you think. These juniors to go along with this years seniors can play....Amat will Shine!..

Anonymous,

Glendora the best defense? ok...but can their O score points?.......it is not like your D is going to shutout everyone. Skill position players score points and CO ,SH and Los Altos have them to go along with their own defense. Glendora will lack offense I just do not see them as well rounded as the above three...everyone is 0-0 we will see I could be wrong and Glendora could tear it up ...I just do not see it happening...

Big Bubba,

I'm just telling it like it is. No Amat fan should sit here and act like losing the guys they did is no sweat off their back. If they were that deep, they'd have made the playoffs the past two years.

My child just recieved a flier for a Camp at Amat and I wanted to pass the info along...July 21 @ 3:00 pm there will be a camp at Bishop Amat featuring current NFL players: Daylon McCutheon, Ralph Brown, Ryan Smith... Former NFL players: Kory Minor, Joey Getherall, Randy Tanner... College Greats: Chris Rix, Pernell Taylor, Brian Polak, Wesley Walker, Ramogi Huma, Jason Harris... The Cost is $50.00 and ages range from 1st grade- 8th grade... The Camp runs till 8... cleats & athletic shorts are required, water, a T- shirt, and food for all campers... if there any questions please contact Mark verti @ 626- 962-2495 ex 6001 or mverti@bishopamat.org

You have got to be kidding Aram!...sure losing those three players was huge but it was really only two the other one was asked to leave. I do not agree Amat has reloaded with talent in those positions...maybe you have not been out to Amat but Bonilla position has gone to a junior named Meffe who started last year and can play the position just as good. RB, with Bryce leaving there is Wagner, Seals and Prieto and these guys look good carrying the ball. WR Frank Lopez has speed and hands just like Wells but he is not as tall but this kid has moves. How do you figure Amat will take their lumps early?..everyone is 0-0 Aram and yes you do have to be loaded to play in the Serra / Pac5 but what makes you think the teams Amat has scheduled are far superior. Hart, ND, Crespi and Rancho Cucamonga graduated lots of seniors last year and their soon to be seniors like Amats have yet to be tested. Sure Crespi brings back Shanks and the QB and Hart brings back Delano Howell and ND has Crist and Brown but what do you know about their defense and their lines? You sound like you are writing Amat off already AT. 3 studs leaving does not kill this team. Verti is going to be pissed you writing his team off like this......you need to get over to Amat and see what they have..Passing league is not a true indicator...but then again as soon as Wells enrolled at SH you jumped ship at Amat and ran straight to SH...Wells is a great athlete but he is not that whole team...SH no doubt will do well this year and will get that ring but Amat will hold their own in that tough schedule you claim they are playing....

I must of missed the game because I was at Bassett watching a game. Or was he watching the game on LSD. How many fans were at BP. What was the score of that game?

Big Bubba,

Your post states that "CO, Los Altos and So. Hills" are strong (seems you have personally observed this to comment so) and Glendora, in your opionion needs to play 4 quarters before you can believe that their defence is as awesome as been reported. Even though Glendora (at least the lineman) have been tested this year by coming in 1st in the Los Osso lineman comp.

In all fairness/accuracy/consistency, Don't you think that CO, Los Altos and So. Hills also needs to be "Tested" before you can make an opinion on them?

Dont count the Bulldogs out just yet.... they have a large team this year and they to have some transfers one from texas and i hear one of there linbackers came from amat also, he played on there varsity team 2yaers ago as a sophmore. it just seems that they are not in because of all the talk about SH, CO,and LA. the coaches at WC are really ready for this season thats why they are not playing monrovia this and changed it with upland. if they werent ready the coach would have just keep the game with monrovia. rember WC doestnt like to get in the blogg drama. out

EAST-WEST GAME WAS THE SORRIEST GAME I HAVE EVER SEEN, WHO EVER CHOSE THIS COACHING STAFF NEEDS A WAKE UP. THE COACH FROM BALDWIN PARK DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO COACH. THE GAME WAS CLOSE SCORING BECAUSE THERE WERE NO GOOD PLAYS, I SEEN SO MANY FUMBLES.
AS FOR THE BLOG ON THE BEST THING ABOUT THE GAME, I MUST AGREED, "SEEING ALL THE TOP KIDS IN THE GAME OF
FOOTBALL COMING AS A TEAM".
ALSO BALDWIN PARK WAS A SORRY PLACE TO PLAY, THEY SHOULD OF PLAYED AT A COLLEGE FIELD.

Big Bubba,

I don't care what Amat had waitng in the wings, don't sugar coat it, losing Wells, McBride and Bonilla hurts badly. That's your best weapon, your leading rusher and your shot caller in the secondary, who was also slated to get some carries when McBride left. You couple that with inexperience at QB ... yikes. Now, the growing pains are going to take place not only at QB, but RB and WR. Against that schedule, how does a team that will undoubtedly take its lumps early keep things together? They'd better figure it out, because you have to be loaded to compete in that league.

IMWTK,

It is weird you say that about CO and getting to the chapionship game last year. They did have a easy road there even with playing So Hills.....Los Altos had the tougher climb to get there and got knocked off by the eventual Champion El Dorado...The good part about this year is all three CO, Los Altos and So. Hills are strong and one or even two will emerge and play each other for a championship...The OC did not reload this year like the SGV in this division so thats why a champion will come out of the SGV this year...Glendora does claim to have the best D but until they are put in a 4 quarter game and if their offense keeps them off the field then we will see. True Gano will make a QB or have a one two combo if need be. This area is what needs work and once that is groomed this Conqs team will take off. The Big "A" over in La Puente , I have to tell you is not as bad as people are bashing this team. True they lost some kids and I would say 3 of them from last were good players (Wells, McBride and Bonilla)but thats it the rest were ok so so players. This team reloaded fast and have kids playing where these three used to play and they are good ballplayers....I watched Amat the other day and the way that o-line is hitting that sled and driving it is scary....Can Amat compete with the big boys thou?...it will be tough but if they gameplan correctly and make the necessary adjustments at halftime(which did not happen last year due to coach exp.) this team could jell at the right time....time will tell.....the favorite is definitley So. Hills. There is no pressure for them with new players a solid coach and a payback they want oh so much against CO....this is going to be one heck of a exciting season for the SGV....there will be one champion and dont be surprised if SGV has to go head to head and knock off each other.

"Curious"

Can you post the link to the "poster" you saw on Amat's web site about the youth camp?

Thanks

The Final list for the Bishop Amat Lancer Legend has to be finalized, but should be finalized by the end of this week or by the begining of next week.

Big Bubba,

Sorry, I was on a business trip the first few days of the week.
I appreciate your opinion because whatever your situation may be clearly you speak from someone who is probably close to or on the inside of our Valley’s high school football programs and at the very least has some experience and intelligence of your own because if nothing else often times I have read this blog and only nonsense is spewed from one post to the next so I welcome real information.
I should mention to you though that in my opinion Charter Oak was very lucky last year to get the Finals and without their two big play athletes on both sides of the ball and with no returning offensive linemen I think the pressure is actually on South Hills because they do have the big play athletes that have arrived by transfer together with some already superior players so they have to prove that last year’s defeat was a fluke and they can win with the best team on paper. Right Aram? Los Altos silence could be a sign for concern for the other two but I agree with you the QB situation is a question mark but bottom line Gano will make sure regardless of who’s playing that position he or they will be successful.
As for Amat, that whole scenario is sad but in my opinion we need them to be successful because they are the only team playing at the highest level representing our Valley.
Your right too Damien or more than likely Glendora is probably going to be the dark horse but let’s be honest if Tartan fans on this blog are right they should not be a surprise to anyone because they already are being self-proclaimed as the best defense in the Valley with the best rising stars on offense.
Thanks Big Bubba I haven’t commented before but was inspired by your honesty. Continued good work on your part and I look forward to more comments from you in the future.

I heard that there will be a football camp at Amat on July 21. My good friend said that it will feature many former Lancers. I looked on their football site and saw a poster confirming this. Does any Amat fan have any info on who will be there?

Big Bubba and and Amat fan very well said. classy

As an Amat fottball follower for years and years, I Can Personally say that I do not believe that the vast majority of of the amat faithful do not think Amat is on another level. I can personally say that I respect all of these local teams, because I do believe they are great. I would like to apoligize for any person who claims to be an Amat fan, and tries to discredit the championships and efforts of the other San Gabriel Valley schools. My believe is that most of the bloggers that are "PRO-AMAT" on this site get the impression from other bloggers that any of the SGV school can handle the type of scheduele that Amat plays year in and year out, and that is what upsets them. It is also my impression that bloggers from other schools just want Amat fans to recognize them for their efforts and not to put them down for being in lower divisions, because in reality, a championship is a championship. Oaks Christians championship means no less than Orange Lutherans or Canyon Country Canyon, because of a difference in division. So please do not try stir up these feelings of negativity between other SGV schools and Bishop Amat.

I'll tell you,

Well you are right and they do put themselfs on a another level because they play the Pac5 D1 whatever you want to call it......They have had the King crown for so long and now the SGV has really evened out as far as talent base...allot has to do with money and times are tough to put your kid thru Private....Amat is dwindling by they for some reason still pacl their stadium even tho they are missing the playoffs........maybe football fans come to watch the other team or the haters come to watch Amat lose...Reguradless I am SGV HS Football fan and I go catch the hottest team playing on Friday......So. Hills will get my attention this year...Amat will also....who can turn down watching Orange Lutheran, Los Osos , SO ND, and Loyola come out to play Amat...The other team is Los Altos, watching McBride run behind Longoria is going to be special........Johnny Crespo will be fun to watch as a senior over at CO and lets see what Barbone does over at San Dimas...lots of talent this year.....not to mention WC taking on Mater Dei......what Ballz.....WC is a team that can catch fire if they beat or hang close with MD.

Big Bubba the reason people on this blog including myself dont want to see amat win is because of the bloggers that keep putting amat on a different scale and they dont want to include amat with the other sgv teams. they keep putting us down.....

IMWTK,

I really feel like the pressure is on CO seeing how they got to the finals last year and are bringing back a strong class again this year. Can they get there? hell yes!..So Hills has nothing to lose only to gain. Added lots of depth this year and to me is the favorite to represent SGV for a championship. There is no pressure at all on So. Hills. they will flow. Los Altos a team in search to get back to the top , altho they have talent on their line and have some good recievers and a strong TE the drawback is the QB. McBride is going to get keyed on and stopped if they cannot balance their attack..the QB needs to sling the ball...do they have that QB? still a question mark. Finally Amat, They will not win a championship and those that think they are, are only fooling themselves. Pac5 not to mention the Serra league is a tough nut to crack. Amat will make noise this year. lots are writing them off because of defections of players but what they have over at amat is still pretty good. sure people will kick a dog when they are down and I do not understand the hate that spills between parents here when we should all be backing each other and hoping and pulling for the best for any of our SGV schools. The Amat goal is to get to a playoff round and go from there. Verti I think has the horses this year to get there and Amat will surprise allot of hate bloggers and teams this year. the key to Amats success is winning that first league game at Crespi. That is their season. winning that first league game on the road and you have the next two league games at home. Win one out of the two and you get in the playoffs....it is very doeable for Amat to get there this year. They have 3 good QBs 3 good RB's a very solid O-line....and their defense will be strong but how well will it hold up with players going both ways.......again SGV will get a champion this year but it all rests on how these teams come together come November....at last, injuries are the nightmere to a losing season as well.....players must stay healthy.......Champions ranked this year for SGV...#1 So Hills #2Charter Oak #3Los Altos #4 Bishop Amat....Darkhorse:Damien

Big Bubba,

In your opinion, who is the pressure really on and has the best chance this year to win C.I.F. because in my opinion one of the big three between South Hills, Los Altos, and Charter Oak should be the champion?
Never have seen so many transfers and such a mass exodus from one school like Bishop Amat this year since West Covina years ago...

I am glad this all star game came and went and was from I read a boring laugher. Lets move on to the upcoming season where the talent level is by far better than this 2007 class that just left us without a SGV champion. This season SGV will get a champion finally. Lets put the McD kid on the shelf and concentrate on the boys working thier a--es off right now. Great QBs are out there, RB's are going to bust out this year, and o and D lineman are going to be monsters. Not to mention the WR out there that are tearing up passing leagues...Top 4 right now that are going to make news for SGV this year and this is not a order just names.....Charter Oak coming back strong and will want that shot after tasting the Championship game last year, Bishop Amat always a team to be reckon with dspite the trashing it takes. dont be mistaken despite their loss of players this is still a very solid and talented team. Verti is ready to take that step in the right direction this year. So Hills what can you say. Lots of weapons and a coach who wants to get back to the dance...he sure does have the talent. did not like the trouncing he took from CO last year. Los Altos Laying low and not too much bloggers..sources tell me this is a serious program and they are coming out with all barrells blazing....lots to prove this year for the Conqs....Support SGV football this is the year we take it to the OC........Peace!

Congrats to Dan Haren for getting the nod to start the All-Star game for the A.L. Aram can we get a story on the Lancers in the All Star game.

SGVGURU,

I agree McD had a bad night as far as ball control, accuracy of passes etc. He most likely would be the first one to agree with that assessment, but arent you aware of his stats over the last 2 years?

If a guy who isnt a QB accounts for over 50 TD's in a 2 year span what do you call him, Lucky?

I cant wait to see him line up in college as a LB, should be better suited but give him some props since he still broke the record books at the SGV'S oldest public school...

AnyMouse...

"sgvguru"

I heard Mendrum had been dealing with back troubles for the previous week, or two. That's what may have limited his playing time.

McD may not be a prototypical qb, but he did move the ball downfield (when he wasn't turning it over).

I went tio the game expecting to see a wide open spread offense with the best recievers ever on the east team. Mendy at QB and let it go....wrong
Why didn't Mendy get some playing time...He got in a couple plays and pulled out.He never got any steady play time...Never got a series of downs before the coach pulls him for that McD kid who was a total washout. He is no QB I say that first hand...The coaching staff was disappointing in the play callin dept.East had alot of talent to put up only 14 pts.

Make that the East scores more points.....

If they would have put McD at linebacker and let Mendrum and Silva split halfs at QB the west scores more points and wins easy. This game was a McD sendoff and he glory hogged and ball hogged the whole game......I do blame the coaches for not planning around their strengths...The coaches got caught up in the McD frenzy themselfs......MISTAKE!......Lots of talent got wasted that nite.

Could it be why Anonynmous is so sarcastic and angry is that his kid didn't get picked for the Fiesta Bowl all-star game either?

AnyMouse,

I see you find yourself sticking up for your own turf. Nothing wrong with that. Perhaps Mike the Clone might call you a "Button Wearer" or say to you "your thinking with your heart and not your head" or maybe he might say Covina will be "one and done" this season if they are lucky. The difference being he doesn't claim to be a Covina parent, he would just be another poor soul with an opinion.

My personal opinion is McD will be remmebered as a GREAT High School athelete with personal problems he will work out. If people really new what went on in the personal lifes of other players, they would certainly be amazed. Mcd has his life open to the public because of his super stardom.

Best of luck to McD!

Hey Aram,

are you going to do the Monrovia analysis again this year???

the violens are playing for zachs dad

Granted McD had 4 turnovers and to be honest they were painful for me to watch, Mike had a less than stellar night when it came to ball control...

I do want to point out one thing though, everytime Mike made a mistake he owned up to it by patting his head or chest while looking at his own sideline. He took responsibility for his errors, that impressed me...

One thing I have constantly seen on here are the bloggers who are not on Mikes team so to speak always say that he cant play with tough competition, to this I say that he rushed for over 100 yards which is pretty decent against a West defense that was obviously "Tough Competition" ...

These are facts that I believe we can all agree upon...

AnyMouse...

BOO HOO Zach's Daddy

We all know your day's on this blog are not over. You will just change your name for the 100th time. I'm am as well proud of your kid if all of that took place. I takes heart to be a warrior. Talk to you soon.

Monica the Mike Fan

Can I set up an appointment with Mr. Clone through you or are you just taking messages for him?

I wish I had "people"!!

I don't get the whole McDonough thing. I'm calling Freddie every 10 minutes from Dodger Stadium and he's telling me "They can't stop McDonough. He just puts the ball down and runs. He's tearing them up." Yes, he said he fumbled and JT scooped and scored.

For once, I wasn't at the game and had to rely on newspaper/blog for what happened. I read the story and it sounds like McDonough was the only offense the East had. He rushed for over 100 yards and scored. He threw a couple of picks and fumbled, I get it. But what would the East have done for yards without him? Is that a valid question?

About coaching - I'd like to remind those of you bashing the WINNING coaching staff that last year's team scored NINE points! Two years ago, the East scored 21 in the first half and got blanked in the second. This All-Star game is always sloppy and mistakes often determine it. It's very hard to put together an offense with two weeks to prepare and not all of the players there on the same night.

If you want to say McD didn't impress you, fine. If you want to question the play calling, great. But just remember the streak is alive and the East got the W.

Zach's Dad although you put a dig on the Clone and not speaking on Mike the Clone's behalf. I'm sure if and when he reads your post he would probably agree with about 99% of it and let you know that he did.

Re: Neo

Sounds like a coach.

If your going to be called the Big Chingon you better prove it and back it up. McD was average at best. Two time POY and thats all we got. most hyped him as the next coming of Earl Campbell / Jack Lambert combo....He is a normal player..nothing outstanding from what I can see and that was the first time I got to watch him....He may beat up his league but when you put talent vs talent that is whole different animal we are talking about....Sorry McD the star they put by you is for playing weaker competition....The Big Chingon you are not.

Fans,
You should all ease up. EVERYONE is an expert from the stands. It is very easy to talk trash while stuffing your face with a hot dog and Diet Pepsi.

My answers to your complaints:

1. "The coaching was terrible"

Then shut up, grab set of headphones, and go call the game yourself and see how easy it is...including you "so-called" coaches.

You have all the answers right???

2. "The players were not used right...so many weapons on the east, blah, blah, blah..."

Um, it's an all-star game with only two weeks of practice before-hand. Coaches must do what it takes to win, not please the crowd. Many players miss practice all the time, they may not fully know what they are doing..get real. They are hundreds of legit reasons for decisions made during a game. Ever try calling a game with only two weeks of practice?

3. "Mike McD was not used the right way...blah, blah, blah..."

Everyone has an opinion of this young man as both a player and a person. Get a life. Everybody has an off day. He did his best. He wants to be a linebacker, and he'll have his chance, even if it is at a weaker JC. Just root for him to finish his education.

4. "So and so did not play as much as he should have..."

Did it every occur to you that he may not be the best? Try this one, he may not even have belonged on the field.

5. "This is the worst game I have ever seen..."

Then so was every other all-star game that has ever been played in the history of high school football. These games are all the same...good kids, playing hard, trying to win and look good in a uniform. Enjoy it for what it is.

6. "This play and that play should have been called...the play-calling was a joke"

You are a coordinator where?

Everyone just ease up. If you have all the answers, then give coach Carroll a call. I am sure he will bring you in immediately.

I enjoyed the All Star game for one reason and one reason only. It was fun to see all the SGV schools hanging out together and having fun playing a game they love..and for most will never play again.

One thing that really made me think about this blog and my involvement with it is seeing and hearing some of the "classiest" parents "bitching and complaining" about the "quality of the game" and the "lack of thier son's playing time". Most of these parents I've suported over the years.

Here's my problem. Everyone of these parents has NEVER/EVER had to see their son on the bench in any of their 4 years in high school. ALL were "featured" stars, ALL got tons of after season awards...and they ALL deserved them. So your son didn't get "featured". SO WHAT! So your son is better than every kid out there...(NOT TRUE) but SO WHAT! Have some respect for every other kid out there that sees playing in an ALL STAR game as a great way to finish off their playing days. One last time to make their families proud...and you waste your time "complaining" about playing time in an ALL STAR game? What about the QB from Workman Alex Silva who came in in the "last" quarter and actually rallied the team? What about the kid from Northview Skolaski who did nothing but bust his a$$ every day at practice? How about Bassett's own Fransico Ruiz who was a monster on defense all night as were many others. Last but not least how about Mishaun Marshall from Nogales who was busting the West up ALL NIGHT! I didn't hear their parents complain about not being "featured".

That's when I started to think about my involvment with this blog. Coupled with Mike the Clown's comments and the overall lack of "sports talk" and well it just ain't fun anymore. If high school sports is in trouble than I have to ask myself one question..."Am I part of the problem or part of the solution?" I can't be both.

But the thing that sealed it for me was seeing my son at a wrestling tournament this weekend. He's only been wrestling since November but this weekend was his first @171 after wrestling all season/summer @189. Whole different animals at 171. Faster, quicker and more skilled. Think Middlewieght boxers. Perfect balance of power and speed.Anyway..he wrestled a kid who just about torn his shoulders out of his sockets. Three times the match was delayed as they checked his shoulders (twice when he went out of bounds, and once before the 3 round) He was in pain, with tears streaming down his face. But he never gave up. Twice it looked like Coach Lucero would stop the match but Zachary held on. IT WAS PAINFUL TO WATCH... I almost yelled for them to stop the match...it was horrible. It almost brought tears to my eyes seeing him twisting and fighting the pain as the other kid just kept attacking his shoulder. When he was finally pinned. He laid on the mat trying to deal with the pain. When Coach Lucero asked him if he was okay and I asked if he needed to go to the doctor he just said other than the pain in his shoulder.."He was good to go again!" It was the most courageous thing I have ever witnessed. When I asked him why didn't he just stop if he thought the kid was taking his shoulder out of his socket and Zach said with disbelief...."And GET PINNED??"

That's when I knew my blogging days were over. Parents complaining about playing time, adults slamming each other and each others kids, parents slamming coaches/administrators/players...it's a disgrace really. And I'm as guilty as anyone else.

Let's ALL get a grip and understand the true meaning of high school sports and the relationship of players and coaches...and stay the hell out of it! I know as much as Zachary was hurting on that mat, nothing meant more to him than representing himself to the best of his ability because of his relationship with his coach, his school and his team mates. I still get chills thinking about his courage. I know I couldn't do it.

Best of luck to ALL the high school athletes and their coaches. As far as anymore blogging....not a chance. I'd hate to think I'm ever going to see myself acting like those parents....and on this blog I probably did. My apologies to anyone I have ever offended. My son taught me the greatest lesson..."just believe in me as much as I believe in myself." Out of the mouth's of babes.

John Wooden had it right all along.."Sports doesn't build character---it reveals it."

Enjoy talkng about "sports"...and nothing more.

Aram it was a blast talking sports with you at the All Star practice with Mrs. McD. Good luck with the blog...I'm done.

Response: Are you serious???

Interesting prospect? Fortunately, the only part of your blog that is true is that we don't have a say-so in the scheduling of competition.

Now, if you truely examined the teams that were present (which I know you have little knowledge of), you would have never concluded that they were an "easy level of competition," like you referenced.

(Quote) "It's not my intention to discredit the the victory of the Line at Glendora because they don't choose who they're competition is......blah-blah-blah-blah.....No Noteable Teams.....blah-blah-blah...How is a victory over these teams really prove anything?"

If the above snippets of your own verbage does not attempt to discredit GHS's as well as every one else that attended and competed.....then I (we) are lost in the definition and meaning of the word, "Discredit."

FYI: Each of the HS teams that participated displayed strengths and weaknesses that only a true fan, parent, and coach...recognized, respected and appreciated.

Over the years I've been to numerous Lineman Comps and those big name schools like you mentioned never came close to the victories posed. The fact is, that in years passed schools like Ayala, Serrano, Norco, and Jarupa, commonly walk away with the trophy because their big boys had what it took to beat out everyone else...(including your so-called big name schools). You might gain a better understanding of what I've explained by actually attending a Lineman Comp....(Once again, congrats to GHS and to all the teams that competed...job well done!).

I was at the game on friday and was disgusted with the offensive gameplan the OC had. I mean
to have guys with that talent and have guys like the Covina kids that averaged 35 pts a game, And than add the other studs on that team, to score 14
pts. Are u kidding me!!! That offensive coordinator should be fired immediately. If that is what Baldwin Park is going with, its no wonder they have won a meaningful game in the last recent years. Rex Foss does not touch the ball once, Jon Joe 2 touches and M J, 0 catches.. what exactly was the gameplan? MCD showed how tough he is, and Harris did ok, but who else was featured?
Marshall was killing them all night, and he cant get more touches? Who ever this O C clown is he shoudnt be coaching at the high school level. And btw, Ive seen Baldwin Park play and you guys are right, it was like watching one of their games. Talent all around and no sense of what to do offensively..... I guess anyone can be a OC nowadays.......have a clue......

Are you serious???

Last I checked, Colton, LB Poly, Edison are not in the sierra league. why compare glendora's great lineman with those from leagues which are considerably more talented. why stop their, how about comparing teams like Mission Viejo or MD to Glendora? Lets get real. The Tartan lineman looked tremendous on Saturday over powering comparable teams. These lineman were much more than advertised.

Beware SL: The Tartan D is for real!

ATTN: Plaid Lad
Are you serious about this competition??? Im not saying that the Glendora football team hasn't worked hard in the weight room and haven't worked hard in the off-season. It is not my intention to discredit the victory of the Line at Glendora, because they don't choose who they're competition is. But I don't doubt that they dominated to Line competition at Los Osos, because look who was there!!! No NOTABLE TEAMS where there to compete. Rowland?, Chaffey?, Serrano? Riverside Poly? How is a victory over these teams really prove anything? Now if this competition was against Colton, LB Poly, Edison, any notable teams, then bragg!!!! But congrats on the efforts to the boys, but It wasn't that big of a victory that is worthy of bragging about.

Spartan Juvenile,

That can not be spartan man...men don't talk that kind of trash. Grow up. About that team of yours.Damien will have NO QB for the next 3 years. Pertusati is average. How he was rated number 1 is a joke. Every QB from South Hills is better. And they were better than Pertusati as freshmen, soph, and junior years. Garay from SEM is better and has the stats to prove it from last year. Even the QBs from Bishop Amat would start in front of him. How about the backups? Damien has none. So maybe Damien will run thru league but the last time anyone checked Glendora 3 wins in the last 4 years. Pasy owns Morrison.

So maybe you jumped ship too early maybe not but driving around with Damien plates in Glendora only tells me your son can't play basketball with the big boys. Glendora 6 wins and Damien 2 wins in 4 years. And last year you choked the Sierra League Championship because Le Duc schooled Dunn again.

hey spartan man

does your son like girls?

Response: Spartan-Man

Now, there is the Damien confidence that I was hoping to squeeze out of you.....since you had the opportunity to vent....let's now talk with certain particulars as to your teams positives and expected successes this coming year.

Response to: ???????

Events at the Los Osos Lineman Competition included:

Tug -o - War

Big Man Weigh - in

Big Man Relay (800)

185 lbs Bench Press

Power Clean

Truck Push

Tire Flip

Sled Push

Sand Bag relay (two 50lbs sand bag 20 yards)

Obstacle Course

20 yard Shuttle

Wheel Barrel Relay (300 lbs/3o yard course with turns)

Glendora secured 1st place by a land slide before the final event (Tug - o - war)

Spartan Man,

My oh my, you must have tasted a lot soap when you were a kid!

Your "Like always" comment is so ridiculous and far from the truth. Do you have a short memory? Also, have some confidence in you writing "we may just have your number once again". Further, making the comment "I am very devote to Damien and truth be told I like being a part of a winner" tells me that last year was your first year at Damien.

And finally, your comment "that's why you lose we win!" again is consistent with a newbie at Damien. You are not speaking about a program with a consistent football track record, 4th place 2005 (behind Glendora, by the way, Glendora beat you that year, Mr. short memory)and 1st in 2006 (loaded with good seniors).

Damien had superb year last year with a team of experienced seniors (similar to the position Glendora will be in this season). However, after losing almost ALL your key players, you will be in a very different position this season. Lay low my friend, best not to eat crow. It doesn't taste a thing like the soap you have been eating as a youth.

Plaid Lad has done nothing but inspire the players and fire-up the Glendora faithful for what will be the year of the Tartan.

And, Spartan Man, be proud of your community.

Response: Plaid-Lad

You ignorant smug male donkey! I live in Glendora too but chose to send my son to Damien instead! How do ya' like them apples? So I too live in your lily white community but just drive around town with a Damien license plate frame instead of your “Pride of Foothills” stereotype.
Please do not harass me either for the lily white comment. I am just simply projecting how someone of your intelligence or lack there of can conduct themselves if everybody was like you. Stupid is as stupid does!
We are both right about one point at least.
I do like living in Glendora but the difference is I am very devote to Damien and truth be told I like being a part of a winner also. Ha-Ha!
I dare you to go there with me on why I sent my son to Damien instead of Glendora. Better yet I double dog dare you!

year of the tartan:

I like the word unlikely in your sentence. Doubting yourself while realizing we may just have your number once again this year like always... Have some confidence in your statement next time oh wait that's right Glendora isn't confident but they do know how to mask around with cockiness! There's a difference and that's why you lose we win!

What drills are done at the lineman comp.

spartan man,

I hope you enjoyed your season last year. unlikely you will have a year like that again.

The East might have had an easier game if they use Mendrum & Sylva more at the QB position to better use all of the talented recievers the East had. Mike Mc.D is a fierce competitor with a lot of heart but he was trying to do to much, & thus made key mistakes, with out those 4 turnovers its a different game plus his throws were off most of the night. In an all star game situation, with all the talent that was availiable the Coaches should have made a change when a kid is turning the ball over the way he was.
Three missed opportunities for TD's were, [1] the long pass that Aron Harris missed on a beautiful throw by Mendrum [Harris sort of made up for that with some nice runs after],[2] Johnsons dropped slant pass for a possible TD, and [3] the missed throw by QB Silva to an uncovered Tra McNair in the backfield when they were near the West Goaline, if Silva makes that pass for the TD he probably would have been the game MVP as that would have locked up the game for the East, and he would not have had that interception a couple of plays later.
The West runningback Lavelle Peterson was the most impressive player on the field, he will be good in D1 or where ever he goes.
Terance Dennis from D.Ranch is the real deal & was having a hell of a night until he ran head on into Lavelle Peterson, if he wouldn't have gotten hurt he probably would have made some huge plays throughout the night and that also would have made it easier for the east, I didn't like the
fit that he threw on the sideline though.
#10 for the West I think he was from Muir, was the second most impressive player, he was all over the field on "D" and on the play before the final interception he caught a pass and juked Phillip Chase so bad that Chase fell flat on his seat, [Thats nothing against you Chase, he probably would have done the same to any one else on the field in that same circumstance] it was a great move.
All in all the game was ok, & I'm glad I saw it,
both teams seemed pretty evenly matched, the West has some great ball players over there and certainly were not inferrior to our East boys.

Response: Spartan-Man

Spoken like a true outsider. We don't expect you to understand the support offered by 91741 or 91740. That's why we are called "Pride of the Foothills."

What are you talking about?

GHS Football-
They have maybe the top,if not, one of the top defenses in the area? They have a talented young quarterback who got valuable experience last year..And they have a bunch of young tal
