"Hey little Cody, come to our place and I'll buy you some Skittles."
The kid's name is Cody Paul. His Los Alamitos Griffins went 15-0 ... no shock. For those of you who think Charter Oak, Los Altos and South Hills get their hands dirty, just imagine what some Orange County coaches are probably already doing to get this kid to Servite or O-Lu or Mater Dei or Los Alamitos.

Hey aram..
Its time for you to put the top 10 cornerback/defensive backs in the area. Because we have one of the top 3 at DUARTE HIGH SCHOOL (DARIUS REESE). We have about 3 of them.
WE WANT THE TOP 10 CORNERBACK/DEFENSIVE BACKS IN THE AREA.

South Hills was in the SGV Shootout but they sent their young kids and competed.
Get this one, Their sophmore QB has checked out and gone to....St. Paul....of all places.
Good call "Pops". You are plain and simply leaving the best school in the area with a rich tradition of success because you believe your kid should be starting over a senior & junior who are better!
In the past 15 years, SH has produced just has many NCAA Div 1 players as any of the top schools in Cal.
We all here in the valley know how you control your sons every move and have seen it for years. My son played travel ball with yours, so I know this first hand! Now it's time to compete & you take your son and run!!
Your act is old and tiring and we have seen it many times removed. Whoever got into your head, fed you a huge line of BS, but then again you are doing this for the academics...right? St. Paul is a has been and has been that way for over 25 years!
Run to St. Paul and then don't stop because running is what you do BEST!

Saw Barbone run the ball when he was a young-pup in JAA @ Glendora. Believe it or not he played JAA with all the top seniors at GHS. Imagine what he and Vega (& company) would be been like if together in one backfield.

So, what are the big passing league meetings this week?
Posted by: Max Mercy | July 16, 2007 11:39 PM
Northview looked good. Matter of fact they threw an interception in overtime against Alhambra or they would have advanced to the semi-finals. Defensively they played really well throughout the day. As for Schurr, they are still going to be competitive in that league. They were way up on SEM and came out the 2nd half using many of their back-up players. They ended up giving up an 18pt. lead and lost the game. But their starters had SEM in some trouble in that first half. They don't seem to take tournaments too seriously.

I went to the Covina Tourney last weekend and ran into a official that helps out each year. He is a college coach and mentioned that San Dimas wasn't a very good passing team, but one of the most physical he saw. I asked him what he thought of Barbone, and he simply said one tough kid who can play the game!

Plaid-Lads four legged friend has finally returned...from the dog-pound...(lol)
Sore arm- 411 on the Kluz is nothing more then talk. Saw him at practice and he's slinging the pig-skin without any complaints. To be honest with you the way Pasky and Company run practice I would imagine that several might have aches and pains from time to time.
GHS will be at San Dimas this coming Wednesday @ 5:00 PM.....Looking forward to seeing who filled the shoes of Joe. Barbone will be interesting to watch...I'm sure he's taking things to the next level as he becomes one of SGV's favorites.
Question: How much does a dog-license cost?

To OK,
No not a coach or booster just a fan ever since my daughter started going there. She graduated in
2004 but I still follow the team and we look forward to friday nights in the fall. I go to the passing games whenever I can and also a few practices. I talk with the coaches every so often, Maggiore and his staff are good coaches that run a good program at West Covina, I think they'll come out of this season ok despite the young team.

Thanks Knightstalker,
For your annalysis on West Co & South Hills.
We have very few returning starters coming back for West Co, its a real young team with not a lot of experience at the varsity level, West Co usually is average when it comes to passing league
because of their run oriented offense although we do pass often during the season, we usually get better when the pads come on but our lack of experienced varsity players puts a big question mark on our season and I also have been concerned
about our pass coverage in the passing games this year, but on the bright side we are missing a few athletic players because of summer basketball that are expected to be with us during the season
so we know more when the pads come on on Aug.16.
Good luck to Arroyo over there on the west side.

You guys are stupid bagging on a little kid,how low has this blog got, cop/coach you crack me up that kid is outstanding.
Posted by: football dude | July 16, 2007 1:29 PM
The kid looks good, but he isn't unique. We have all seen this type of runner at the JAA/Pop Warner level. He reminded me of 2 kids right off the bat: Brandon Stansell and Kosmond Russell. Both of these kids had the ability to cut and elude tacklers but had more top end, breakaway speed.
The funny thing, both kids are making their high school marks on the basketball court...Russell at Glendora and Stansell at Rowland.
Last year CO had a kid named B.J. Wolak who had similar skills. He is now a freshman at Damien and the coaches are already buzzing about him.
I think that young Mr. Paul has a solid future though and hope to see him do well.
Posted by: Cop/Coach | July 16, 2007 12:46 PM
crespo is a good division 6 runner, but he split time with another running back last year on the way to the ship. i have respect for CO and all, but their division vs the PAC 5 divison are different. Competition is just not as high. But I guess who you play doesn't matter as long you have the ring. Good Luck CO!
Posted by: Serious | July 16, 2007 9:36 AM
This kid is good. what competition was heplaying against?...what were their records?....McD in his JAA days makes this kid look normal......Can he play on both sides of the ball?...because you are a so call ed great one at the JAA level does not mean you will dominate HS ball........Heck he may not even play HS ball. Kids get burned out come 14-15 yrs. old from parents pushing them in sports programs as children that when they get to HS they do not want it......baseball included...this kid could have a injury along the way no one knows.........wwe have got to be hard up and desperate for football talk if we have gone down this far and are blogging about a JAA kid...Lets talk about the HS level here......yes the Crespo's, Wagner's, Barbone's, these are true RB of the SGV.....who cares about what Los Alamitos is recruiting....if your going to do a story about a JAA player, do one on a RB out of LP or HH, WC, CO, Covina,

this kid is great! thank God for volume control. What is with that crappy song. Drugs and ho's to highlight a kids vid. Nice choice,,,,,,,,,
Posted by: fifty cents | July 15, 2007 9:26 PM
Watching this vid, I'd say yeah, maybe this kid runs the ball better than Crespo (maybe not), but I do see the likeness in their style/size. The jukes, the speed, the heart.. I don't know, I've been part of the CO fam for awhile now, and I've been watching Crespo since he was 8 years old. For awhile there, I think he really was dominating with his speed like this kid. But as kids get older, they start catching up with each other size-wise, speed-wise and what not. Crespo loves the game and works hard with what he's got. With all his off-season effots this year, I think 07 will be a big year for the kid.
PLAID LAD: I do agree with you on one point:
"I just want them to back their rebuttal(s) with facts and not senseless rhetoric when blogging about FOOTBALL. "
well see, umm... I'm just wondering..
"J. Crespo never came close in JAA running the ball like that kid on the video."
uhh.. what do you call THAT?
Do you genuinely think that the Cody/Crespo comparison is an "outlandish statement that is way off the mark"? Try to back your rebuttal with some SUBSTANCE next time instead of dissing a good kid like Crespo. These kids have got a lot of fans and supporters reading the blog and I think they deserve more than your senseless rhetoric when blogging about the KIDS.

Yeah South Hills was there but unfortunately they didn't bring many of their starters. Several SH coaches were there including Coach Bogan. I believe they lost in pool play to Northview & Alhambra and then again to Schurr. From what I heard South Hills beat WC in the 11th place final, but to be honest because it was a league rival I would bet WC just mailed it in.
As for WC they lost to Gladstone in overtime in a game they had won & just seemed to stop competing. Then they came out and played champion Arroyo tough for a half, but were shut out in the 2nd half and lost by about 24. WC ended the day with a win over La Puente & a loss versus South Hills.
It is hard to tell about a team like WC in passing league, because misdirection is so limited in passing league. They didn't seemed to have the same tough guy, intense mentality on defense I have seen from them in the past. They also appeared to be a little short in the way of impact athletes. They had a couple of really good kids, but not the 5-6 you'd come to expect to see on each side of the ball as in years past.
Posted by: KnightStalker | July 15, 2007 8:55 PM
ok here is the deal..i coached the defense for the HLP team that lost to them in the championship,,and that kid is the truth ill admit...we had that kid tackled 3 times for losses and all three times he made a increideble play breaking tackles and got away from us to score..if he doesnt make those plays we win..he is a hard runner and team player..he is very strong for his age and size...but also he is only 5'5 at age 13 when we played them..he played at what the called and older light weight..the Rules in Pop Warner are differnt than JAA..so this kid is great...i spoke to his dad on the side lines he said that the whole team is going to LOS AL..so there gonna be running THe OC for the next few..yrs...

Good to hear from you Joe!...I agree with some of your comments...unfortunately that was not a "set-up"...
Joe, I call-it as I see-it...with confidence and knowledge of the game with a side-order of positive observations. Additonally, when someone makes an outlandish statement that is way off the mark, naturally I might respond. If facts are facts, then those that postulate on this grey-space need to address their resources before they pound their keyboards in the name of just being heard.
Regarding the vicious name calling....well, I try to refrain from pinging-back words...but as you can see I've chipped when I should have hooked...so be it! Needless to say, my words don't come close to the negative sentencing of some on this blog-site. If people disagree with me, it's OK...I just want them to back their rebuttal(s) with facts and not senseless rhetoric when blogging about FOOTBALL.
(enough said)
So, Joe how is Amat's QB, RB and O-Line situation this year? How's the team adjusting to the recent changes? I still believe that Amat has enough in their tank to win league and make the play-offs this year. Verti sounds like he has his hands full this year and I'm confident that the Amat faithfuls will support his efforts.

Plaid-Lad,
Me thinks you are treading in some murky waters when you start calling out "Spartan-Man" (and his many aliases) for his football knowledge. My guess is that on some levels you could match those Xs & Os with each other.
As an observer of your exchanges recently you tried REALLY hard to take the high road for a couple of weeks to remind us all of what is good and right - but then you succumbed to the temptation with the Crespo comment - true or not (and I might tend to agree with you on that one).
But I have always sided with offering factual opinions (that's what a blog is for) and have never been accused of trying to be anything different by traveling the high road when reality might be on another path.
I guess you set yourself up a little, but in reality you are just like many that visit here. A pretty knowledgable football guy, with some experience - and opinions. When someones opinion doesn't agree with yours - as much as you try - you have to counter point. And there is nothing wrong with that.
It is the purpose of this blog, so embrace it. Is that an X or an O?

So, let's now get down to the business of talking X's and O's...and I'm not referring to "hugs or kisses"...I added that comment just to clarify things for you in case your still scratching your head.
My opinion (as well as others) believe that you (Spartan Man) have absolutely no FOOTBALL knowledge...hence, chucking spears at the GHS camp from afar is all your bedraggled mind can do. So, blog-on with your imaginary fluidity because you still are expressing volumes....of absolutely NOTHING!

Geez, Plaid Lassie. Do you really think that you frustrate anyone?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You make me laugh. You are a clown.
Frustration is you trying to heal the pain of your failed athletic career by latching onto teenage boys.
Frustration is knowing that your dreams of a perfect season will go up in smoke.
Frustration is you trying to tie your shoes without loosening your belt and unbuttoning your pants.
Take solace in the fact that Glendora named their girls softball league after you..."Lassie League"...congratulations for that

KnightStalker at July 14, 2007 10:14 PM,
Good post, soft helmets should be required at all of these events, I pray to God it doesnt happen but the odds will catch up and a youngster will eventually be killed out there one day...
I hope the coaches make the voluntary investment with their booster money until it becomes mandatory, these kids go full on and 2 guys knocking heads at full speed spells disaster...
Common sense needs to prevail here...

People used to always tell me that my son was a good and strong football player...but...they would always say that he needed to work on his speed. I took him to Optimal Sports and his speed increased significantly in about 5 weeks. His body transformed from a large framed kid with some muscle to being all muscle as a Freshman. Upper division players can't believe he's only 13 because of how ripped he got. He's like a different player. Now that he's been training for almost 3 months, he is explosive on the football field. Being fast was never something I used to hear about my son. Now I hear it all the time. If you have a kid with potential but needs that cutting edge, you should check out Optimal Sports. You might see some familiar faces from LA like Shaun Cody and Ray Rodriguez, but they train anyone from any school. It's such an awesome feeling to hear people telling you how good your kid is playing. I know that this training took my son's skills to a different level. He is so much more athletic, more confident, and more skilled than ever before. I know I'm going on and on about how great my son is now, but I want to promote this place because they helped my son so much. The owner's name is Bobby Godinez. He's the one that trained my son. The first session is FREE!!! Here's his link and phone number.

SGV Shootout at Arroyo. The scores were posted throughout the day... I don't know them all but this is what I remember. The championship went to Arroyo 33-18 over South El Monte.
South El Monte beat Pioneer & Schurr in Pool play and then beat Alhambra in overtime in the semi-finals. That was an awesome game.
Arroyo got to the finals by beating Gladstone, West Covina & then they beat Rowland in the other semi-final game.
The scariest moment came in the Rosemead vs Gladstone game with a Gladstone player reaching for a ball on a deep pattern and a Rosemead player doing the same coming from the other direction. Both looked to be knocked out. Medics came onto the field but it looked like they cleared them both to go home. Organizers of these tournaments ought to look into making all teams bring those foam helmets to play, I think.
Everyone that participated seemed to really enjoy the format & the competition (even with the heat!) I spoke with a South Hills coach and he mentioned that this was a free tournament! He said that Arroyo suggested that because teams saved $100-$200 on an entry fee that it would be appreciated if all schools would make a small charitable donation to the Cancer Society because an Arroyo coach lost his mother to this disease recently & Coach Escamilla lost his sister this off-season as well. Good tournment, good players... good cause.
If I can find somebody with the results I will post them. Saw a lot of games feel free to ask how a particular team played.

Crespo is an outstanding player who I've had the pleasure seeing play, but that #5 runs and catches the ball a whole lot like a young man over at Los Altos #1 "Seanez". Just ask the players at Foothill High school from last years playoffs. This was an outstanding video of future star.(#5)

that kid is bomb...great vision and good speed at that level. cant wait to see how he progresses when he gets to high school, wherever hes recruited...
Posted by: Anonymous | July 14, 2007 7:48 PM
Plaid Lassie, for someone with such thin skin, you sure dish out the criticism for those who don't don the plaid skirts up at GHS.
Heck, Crespo is a pioneer. He left Amat for CO before it was fashionable and caught hell for it. He certainly is getting the last laugh now.
Posted by: Barroid Bonds | July 14, 2007 7:37 PM
Plaid-Lad you should be ashamed of yourself for actually lowering your standards. The JAA of today is a joke just as Little League baseball has become.

Response: Spartan Man (AKA: Twisted-Man)
Obviously I've seen one execute on the ball more then the other. Crespo ran the ball in JJA-CO as he does now for COHS. Based on what I've seen he never ran the ball as good as the young kid in the video when he played JJA and that's a fact....If you follow my dribble on this blog like you think you have you would have known that I've mentioned Crespo in the past and have credited him with the talents that he currently does have and I'm not about to back down on those opinions....enough said.
Posted by: PLAID-LAD | July 14, 2007 7:27 PM
You guys are actually evaluating what goes on at JAA are you guy serious?
Posted by: Feelin U | July 14, 2007 7:19 PM
hes going to longbeach poly
Posted by: haha | July 14, 2007 6:47 PM
PLAID-LAD,
I am sure I don’t speak just for myself when I say we appreciate your positive critique of Crespo. The “he never came close” evaluation is probably as fair and objective point of view someone can have especially someone like yourself and your football credentials.
I just do not see the point in having to post that! And you were quick to point the finger at me. I count 4 more now pointing back at you. Go ahead I know you want to explain yourself tell us why? Say something nice about Crespo start writing…
P.S. Do you really still think were the underdog and your the favorite or are you ready to go back on your word?
Posted by: Spartan Man | July 14, 2007 6:36 PM
Did anyone go to the Arroyo tournament?
Who was there & who did well? Does anyone have a breakdown of the brackets & the results of each bracket?
Posted by: Dan | July 14, 2007 6:35 PM
Hacienda La Puente Pop Warner Pee Wee football team lost to Los Al Pee Wees 24-14 in the OEC Conference Championship game. Los Al went on to win the Pee Wee Pop Warner superbowl 33-0 and 46-14. Hacienda Heights has some talented kids in their pop warner programs. They have even sent the Jr Midgets to the superbowl the last two years.
Cody is an outstanding player.
