Top 10 linebackers: They should change it to Linebacker V. (for Valley) ...
What a year for linebackers in the Valley. It's one of my favorite positions at the high school and college level because these guys have so much of a say in the game. Not so at the pro level, where it seems like only handful of linebackers can truly play a big role in the outcome.
I'm aware this is going to be a controversial list, but hey, it's a controversial position. My advice to those who shake their head at the list is to ask you to simply realize that some schools have a monopoly at the position. Then ask yourself if any of the guys on the list were at your school, what would they do? That should help ease the tension. Also , I want to stipulate something: I don't fully trust most stat keepers when it comes to tackles. Some teams give credit for a tackle when a player is simply within the same zip code as the ball carrier. It's kind of subjective. Therefore, I think LB is a position better observed in person than in the stat column. Anyway, as a whole, the Valley is once again loaded with good linebackers.
1. Damon Kuklinski, South Hills - Most overused term in football writing/broadcasting: Throwback.
2. Marcus Wagner, Bishop Amat - Amat's rock, literally, in the middle.
3. Mikey Niles, Glendora - This year's Todd Bruno. Should get major aid from the D-Line.
4. Nick Padilla, Charter Oak - Will have to play a Pasalo-like role this year. That's a hard act to follow.
5. Marc Felix, Los Altos - Six sacks last season and third on the team in tackles. I expect even better in '07.
6. Robert Horn, Glendora - The new "Beast of the East?" Gottsta stay healthy. Between you and me, I get scared watching him from the sideline.
7. Ray Washington, Charter Oak - It wouldn't surprise me if he's the biggest breakout player on the list.
8. Andrew Rodriguez, Northview - The area's version of A-Rod hits QBs and RBs, not homers.
9. Drew Carreon, Charter Oak - Plays a hybrid position and came on like gangbusters after the position switch midway thru last year. Now Big Lou tells me Washington State is interested.
10. Chris Bowden, South Hills - 106 tackles a sophomore. Should have a similar season playing alongside Kuklinski.

I am mother who went to see my son (who is a Junior) at "Passing Leauge" today. When it was over, I overheard the my husband and the boys talking about some sports article naming the top 10 Linebackers. So being a nosy mother I went on to check the list out "knowing that my son didn't make the list" (maybe next year - : ). I was like "WOW" I thought us women were bad at gossip or whatever you guys want to call it! I have been going to football games since my son started Flag football and I feel I'm prettty familiar on what makes a good Linebacker. What a hater to the person who said that player on the highlight video isnt a great Linebacker.
What a shame, I guess Your son must not have made the list.
Best of Luck to all the Boys on or off the list!!

Are you serious that's a highlight tape. I watched three minutes of it and I couldnt stand to watch the rest. Your gonna show me highlights of an player who is playing BONITA and WILSON. Did you even see the highlights? Im sorry I saw nothig remarkable that makes an a great linebacker. He's probably a great kid and player. But a linebacker he is ok. Can you show me something worth while please?

A COACHES MOMENT TO REMEMBER
Several years ago I went to a football conference down in Palm Springs, Ca. The guest speaker was none other then..Coach Tom Osborne. As a parting shot Coach Osborne related the following coaches moment;
It was Sept. 17, 1977, and Coach Osborne was at the brim of defeating his first "Top-Five-Team" with a 31 to 24 victory over Bear Bryant's Alabama (Crimson Tide).
With the game tided @ 24, backup QB Randy Garcia replaced starter Tom Sorely and drove the Huskers 80 yards for the winning TD with a 1 yard-out, by Rick Bern.
The final score...Neb. 31 - Ala. 24
During the post game media interviews Osborne was asked what possessed him to replace Sorely with back-up QB Garcia. Osborne quipped about his coaching decisions and told the media that he allowed Garcia to make the field decisions that ultimately earned the Huskers a win.
The media then turned to Garcia and asked how he managed a win against such a tough opponent. Garcia said that he remained relaxed and in control, and just prior to the winning TD Osborne called a time-out to discuss the teams possibilities. In the sideline huddle Osborne turned to Garcia and said, "KId, call what ever you want." Realizing the game depended on the execution of the next play...Garcia re-entered the team huddle and numerically added up two of his favorite Husker plays and called-out one play that gave the Husker's the win. When asked by the media....Garcia said he added the numbers 20 and 15 to produce the winning offensive play of 40. Stunned by the calculation of the young QB....one brave sports writer said aloud.... "20 plus 15 does not add-up to 40." Garcia paused for a moment then replied, "It does if you want to win big against Alabama."
Coach Tom Osborne ended by saying he was glad QB Garcia was not an Accounting Major.
FYI: Same...Randy Garcia that attended LA Wilson HS

My son played at Damien last year. The one thing that has happend over the years is that the coaching staff does not think that players can not go both ways full time. This year I hear it will be much of the same. Mcmahon will play safety and part time reciever. For this kid to not carry the ball is a crime. I hear that there are three or four other kids in the same boat. Morrison and Co. have to start following the top HS football programs around to be in the hunt at the end of this year or they will not defend their title. We lost three games last season. Two of those games were lost by coaching. SJB was lost by scrubs playing on special teams. Los Altos was lost on bad play calling and not using the proper personal as well as being out coached by Gano.
Morrison and Co. it's for you to coach in the 21st Century. Players can go full time both ways. Play your best Athletes or you will lose the SJB,LA,CO,CHHS and GHS games this year. The sad thing is that you probably have more talented athletes this then you have ever had. I'm now just a bystander. My kid is off to college. I enjoy hs football and had a great time the last four years. And yes we all know
all hs football coaches read this blog. Even if they say they do not. Good luck to all local teams as I will be following you in the local fish wrap.

GO BRAVES !!!!
Posted by: BRAVETOWN | July 13, 2007 9:00 AM
People used to always tell me that my son was a good and strong football player...but...they would always say that he needed to work on his speed. I took him to Optimal Sports and his speed increased significantly in about 5 weeks. His body transformed from a large framed kid with some muscle to being all muscle as a Freshman. Upper division players can't believe he's only 13 because of how ripped he got. He's like a different player. Now that he's been training for almost 3 months, he is explosive on the football field. Being fast was never something I used to hear about my son. Now I hear it all the time. If you have a kid with potential but needs that cutting edge, you should check out Optimal Sports. You might see some familiar faces from LA like Shaun Cody and Ray Rodriguez, but they train anyone from any school. It's such an awesome feeling to hear people telling you how good your kid is playing. I know that this training took my son's skills to a different level. He is so much more athletic, more confident, and more skilled than ever before. I know I'm going on and on about how great my son is now, but I want to promote this place because they helped my son so much. The owner's name is Bobby Godinez. He's the one that trained my son. The first session is FREE!!! Here's his link and phone number.

I agree that Tra has potential and pedigree. But the other guys on this list are more accomplished at this point. Tra needs a season under his belt and I'm sure Coach Koffler will make sure he factors in big in all of Rosemead's plans.
Posted by: Aram | July 12, 2007 10:38 PM
Sumler? I hope Tra focuses this season because he could really help the team. That being said Rosemead's defense looked much better tonight at Arroyo in their 4-way. Team speed at the skill spots looked a little questionable, though. Offensively the WR's had a case of the drops & the qb doesn't have the strength of Walker from last year, but he throws much, much better on the shorter to medium depth routes. The game with Arroyo was intense & nearly full contact. No cheap shots... just very aggressive touch football.

Response: Mike the Clone-Annoymous-GT Fans (at -large)
Alot has been said about how GHS supporters complain when shades of opinions are thrown back at them over disagreements. The opinions offered by bloggies such as MTC, Annoymous, AnyMouse and all GT fans are proof that each of us have our own opinions and adgendas that are important enough to pound the keys and post. I don't necessarily agree with everyone from GHS but I accept their subjective support even though at times it mirrors one shake of the hand and two kicks at the boys. Okay so maybe being civil is totally out of reach for some....hey, if that is the only way you know how to communicate...so-be-it. That shouldn't negate the one fact that we all have in common and that is GHS.

Amitted CoolAider,
Again, you won't give me your school. And, once again you throw up lies. Aram never exposed me for any of my posts. There are many "Anonymous" posters. We are just to lazy to place a stupid name in the box. Unlike you, I will refrain from calling you such fitting words as A** hole, idiot, dumb A** and, of course the most fitting JEALOUS HATER.
I can care less if my son plays on the Allstar team, because, unlike you, I got quite a life and don't live vicariously through my son.
Don't hear much from your fearless leader anymore. I guess he's waiting for tempers to settle down like he usually does after pissing off so many people. You can replace him if you like, but don't think you want the heat.
Posted by: One of many Anonymous | July 12, 2007 3:40 PM
anonymous this will be my only response to you because I have followed your posts and most of what you have said. the clone and aram exposed you for who you are and that’s an angry, bitter pissed of at the world father whose kid didn’t get picked to both all-star games. you are irrelevant and a non-factor. you are nothing but a complainer and a big baby. a zero a zilch the big O. so I will let guys like mike the clone and those type of guys whom know more than me deal with your sorry self other than that you’re a waste of time for me to spend the effort to respond to your self pity party. hope you feel better soon.

You were dead on about the sports page not mention the former Amat pitcher starting for the American League. You could have also mentioned Aaron Rowand of Glendora who made the last out.

come on, who is your team? I'm waiting to do a Maxpreps analysis to see how baddly you need players to step up! Then I can say "Interesting isn't it who's going to step up?" Come on now, don't be shy or are you affraid of what the findings may be. I expect that after I do this analyis, you will have a retort of a sort. Then I will quickly claim you are a button wearer.

you sir, are not a plaiddy, coolaider yes!
If I said Damien sucks, who is going to replace those leaving, do you think a Damien "button wearer" would come to the rescue. If you say no, then you are illusional.
The fact is, if you read this blog, this kind of "support your school" happens every day to all schools that have been hated upon.
You just pick out Glendora, because you are under the misguided opinion that glendorans are smug.

Who do you think is going to fill those shoes since you seem to be looming in the hallways watching practices and yes it's a honest question of any school.when guys leave who's going to step in. no wonder we have people that dont like us you drive me nuts.I think mr clone is saying that a button wearer is someone so blinded by their allegiance that they become blinded by reality. but excuse me for speaking for the clone And yes after watching these post yeah maybe I am now becoming some sort of a coolaider you leave me no choice because all i ever see from you guys is complaining all the time about how everyone is doing you wrong and who wants to be associated with a bunch like that. You,I and yes even Mike want to see us win. But when someone has a differing opinion quit sounding like a bunch of victims because were aren't.

Aram I hear West Covina has a LB that played for Amat last year or the year before I hear he is pretty good and I here the transfer they have from Texas is GREAT. Its a secreat so dont tell anyone that way we dont start talking about him on the blogg. I hear he tried to get into Amat but not book smart. if thats ok to say
Posted by: info | July 12, 2007 1:53 PM
Just an observation
Amat never, never had to justify a victory. Glendora was ridiculed for every win (i.e. so-and-so wasn't playing first qtr, so-and-so was out due to disipline measures, so-and-so was out with an injury). Haters will continue to hate.
Are you not a "button wearer" for your school? or are you just a Mike the Clone "coolaide" drinker. Some one earlier asked for just one glendora football parent to speak up in support of the Clone. That has yet to happen. So I guess all glendora football parents are button wearers and are obviously bad people.
Posted by: Hate is a terrible emotion | July 12, 2007 1:32 PM
just an observation.
who is your team, and how will they fill the shoes of the graduates?
seems to me this would be a good question to ask every team in sgv. who will fill the shoes of the top stats leaving amat, damien, west covina, covina, etc...
i'll ask again, who is your school so i can run the stats, sight unseen. Then we will see how you feel about my "sight unseen" analysis. "Interesting isn't it who's going to step up?" i know you will take it like a man.
Posted by: Who is your school? | July 12, 2007 1:21 PM
Wow, what a list? Is this list made up of just seniors? If not, you missed up and coming linebackers Brent Seals, Jesse Prieto. Both are fast, smart and agressive. They both played for the Lancers last year as sophmores. Both are ripped, with a combination of speed and agility. Aram, you should go check them out.

Feeling U I think you just witnessed what Mike the Clone calls a button wearer. They take everything personally and when you dont agree with them your attacking them and their team their program their son their coach. It's just sad. He has never seen this from any other team hello can he say BISHOP AMAT. I understand what your saying in regards to the stats you put up. Those are huge shoes to fill with those guys gone who is going to "step up" again just a simple question as you say. But no your attacked. I understand the defense will be strong who knows will they be as strong as all the talk again who knows. But they will be strong. The guys mentioned will need some help. Your right he is a distraction but whats the point arguing that they will never understand. And if he thinks he wouldn't be a distraction then why is he watching practice from a distance. BECAUSE HE'D BE A DISTRACTION.
Posted by: Just an observation | July 12, 2007 12:48 PM
Kyle Lengyel #40 at Diamond Ranch 3 INT 6 QB sacks as a 10th grader. Watch the Los Altos and Charter Oak games and you will see what I am talking about. Was invited and attended camps at Notre Dame, ASU, UCLA, and USC. He is already being recruited by major colleges.
Spencer Stueve #44 played ILB and finished at OLB. Covers a lot of gound and makes plays all over the field. I guess because DR is a new school and is just now renentering the Miramonte League it is over looked. Before the OL/DL list comes look at Charles Ciscneros and Chris Holcromb. Both will be three year starters. Ciscneros was at the Army All American for Juniors in Texas.

Honest question with negetive connotations,
"Interesting isn't it who's going to step up?". Why are Glendora faithful so uptight? Answer: Because, due to the high degree of "haters" on this blog, the Tartans were chastised for not just their few losts last season, but, hell, they were verbally beaten on the blog for their victories. I have never seen anything like this for any other team. The team had a very successful season last year among incrediblly talented offenses. Primarily, this same defense will be returning with greater strength, speed, experience and determination against notably weaker offenses.
So, I would argue, if you haven't seen last years team or even this year's team, any observation or opinion is greatly diminished and without merit.I would reserve any observations/opinions until such time as a least ONE visit to witness players first hand or at least by film. I comment on teams/players I have seen first hand.
As far as attending practices and becoming a distraction, you must be the kind of dad which interfers with the coaching. Try sitting in the stands or observing from a distance like many fathers do. To me, attending you son's practice is more of a statement of support of your son's endeavors, sacrafice and enjoyment. I want to share that with my son.

Stats it wasn't a put down or anythng. The linebacker list answers that question as to whom to watch but doesn't answer the question as to whom beside the GHS players listed need to step up. It was an honest question. Why are some of us at GHS so uptight. And what good is it going to practices besides being a distraction. Let the kid's practice they don't need you poking around making sure little johnny is going to start on friday night. I mean how embarassing. Stay home let your son enjoy the experience and show up on friday night and watch him play. Pretty simple concept to me wouldn't you say.

Easy being a arm chair QB - - Get off your butt and attend a practice. How many times did you see Glendora play last year to make your calculated observation. Have you ever seen Horn, Niles, Young or Kovar play? Making MaxPreps analysis is not only dangerous, but plain stupid!
Lets hear about your team. I would like to make the same MaxPreps analysis of those that graduated. As Aram said, MaxPreps is disceiving, especially when looking at linebackers. Many LB sacks and tackles are directly due to a strong D-line. I bet if you do the same MaxPreps analysis on any team you will wonder who will step up.

Speaking of baseball, Robert Horn hit a home run while playing Little League for me as a 12 year old that easily traveled 300+ feet. It was an enormous blast and showed what an incredibly strong kid he was going to be. Congrats to Robert for making the top 10 linebacker list. He will be awesome to watch this season for Glendora fans.

Aram, I understand some of your logic as to the LB top ten picks with one oversight.....you failed to mention Glendora (LB) Chad Young.. If what you said is held to be true...then Young would start at LB anywhere in the SGV and likely outplay some of your so-called picks. Don't believe me?.....stay-tuned for Sept 7, 2007

WRITE ABOUT IT!
Recently, the gray-space on Aram's blog has become stale toward the exchange of program weaknesses and strengths each SGV team will endure this year. I like most, have my own opinions as to the names of those "top-dogs" that will reign as SGV's premiere programs this year. But given that, there are other notables that exit within the SGV family that have the possibilities of yielding great success. So, when one reads that programs such as, So. Hills, Charter Oak, Los Altos, Covina, and Damien, are considered strong horses to finish the race with high marks...it is truely understandable. These programs faired well last year and went deep into their own respective levels of competition and shined. It is for these schools and their programs that most guide and gauge their own benchmarks of success. At the end of the 2007 season if these teams as well as others excel it will ultimately allow the "SGV Family" to boost of our regions accomplishments. I have always supported the sports programs offered to our children (as do most of you) because they are one of the strongest building blocks toward their future endeavors. For this, I encourage all honks to "WRITE ON" about their revered programs and projected excellence. Best of luck to all this year!

i fully expect glendoras lb's horn, niles and young to cause great damage...these guys are scary brutal. all leaguer d-lineman kovar must be the strongest and fastest in the valley and d-lineman bowdry has great size and speed. db's edwards and nichols are two of the very best defenders around with exceptional speed and quickness off the ball. The entire defense is loaded with talent, experience, strength and speed...they are for real.

Goss is more of a safety in my eyes. Had six sacks last year, though. One of the top defenders around.

James Mead and Jessie Prieto are going to be making lots of tackles for Amat this year. Saw them last year they love to hit....these are some very good linebackers...Aram you need to get out to Amat more........how is this a fair assesment if they have not even put on pads yet???...premature prediction at it's best here Aram.
