McCutcheon talks ...

| | Comments (56) |

Daylon McCutcheon talked with our Steve Ramirez about the state of Bishop Amat football, and why he's back after retiring from the Cleveland Browns.
"I'm excited to help these guys out," McCutcheon said. "I'm just tired of hearing about the good ol' days, the good ol' days. I feel I was part of the best teams (in Amat's history). I want these kids to experience what I experienced when I played here."
Bishop Amat, which went 39-2 with one CIF-Southern Section title in McCutcheon's three seasons as a starter, has failed to qualify for the postseason the past two seasons.
"I stayed pretty connected to the school," said McCutcheon, who is coaching the defensive line and secondary. "I came out in the spring and talked to (Amat coach Mark Verti) and the team, and hung out and kind of watched from afar. I decided I was going to retire in early July, and they heard I was (leaning that way), so they asked me to help out. I was excited about it.
"I always wanted to stay around the game. I always felt I would like to coach at the high school level, but the main thing is that I just have so much pride (about) the tradition here. It's one of the things that got me (to go to high school) here. When I came here, the talk was about Eric Bienemy, about Scott Fields. ... I wanted to be part of something special. I think with these kids, it's the same way.
"Everyone says we're going through a down time, that we're not the same Amat, we're not winning. I want to help these kids get back to becoming one of the dominant teams in CIF, in Division I and especially in the Valley."
On being a coach ...
"I feel very comfortable (teaching) and I feel I can relate to the kids and (teach) what I've learned to them and tell them how to execute it on the football field. It's a learning process for me, too. This is my first year coaching, so there are things I have to learn also, but I feel I'm able to get my point across and they are getting better.
"But it's hard. It's so close to the beginning of the season, I don't want to come in and change everything. But I do have a lot of wisdom when it comes to football and I think I can help them out."
McCutcheon on players' reaction to him.
"A lot of these kids look at guys, whether it be a singer or an athlete, as distan. "I want them to say, `Hey, I can get this done. This is someone from my school, my community who was able to succeed and came from the same place I'm from.' "

You have to admire Daylon. A lot of SGV prep high school superstars whose glory has lived and passed dont usually "give back". So Im just saying you have to admire someone like that, and it will serve Amat players well, too.

Amat will face 3 of the state top 10 QB in ND's Crist, Carson's Blackman and Crespi's Prince.

Dayne Crist, Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame- Notre Dame
The gutty, athletic five-star quarterback, who came back from a career-threatening injury, was too good for the Irish to pass on, and he’ll lead one of the best teams in the state this fall.

2. Nick Crissman, Huntington Beach (Calif.) Edison- - UCLA
A tough and gritty passer, Crissman had an excellent summer and upped his stock nationally. Few are tougher in the pocket.

3. Matt Scott, Corona (Calif.) Centennial- Arizona
Has quite possibly the best and most fluid throwing motion of any quarterback in the West, and he’s also an excellent runner.

4. Dominique Blackman, Carson (Calif.)- Washington
Big and strong-armed, Blackman reminds many of NFL top pick JaMarcus Russell.

5. Beau Sweeney, Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West- California
Sweeney is probably the best dual-threat quarterback in the state, and with Clovis West incorporating the pass more this fall, he’ll have a chance to show off his arm.

6. Kevin Prince, Encino (Calif.) Crespi
May have had the best summer of any quarterback in California, leading Crespi in several passing league

If you really look at the facts... You would appreciate the fact that Amat has sent more players to SC than any OTHER school in the Valley and respect that!

Yeah, they're struggling a little right now, but it's freakin HS football, man!

Relax and let these kids and parents enjoy this time of year.

JJ,

You are waaaaayyyy out of the loop regarding high school sports if you think that private schools have an advantage when it comes to recruiting...eeeerrrr...attracting athletes. That has been discussed to no end on this blog. Check the archives.

I do empathize with the decline in enrollment at St Paul, and I think that most might attribute that to the administration in the mid-late '80s which was - oh, yeah, amat's President msgr carroll. That is now our problem.

If you think that it's about demographics, check the demographic of the Los Altos entire student body. They still seem to get it done.

Funny that you mention the comparison between amat and Rosemeads enrollment. As of last winter Rosemead had 2015 students. By comparison Los Altos had 2095 and Charter Oak had 2124. Not that significant a difference is it? South Hills has 2026. I'm sure that those 11 extra players don't make a difference, do they?

Oh, and by the way - amat had 1520 students

Before you go shooting your mouth off, why don't you start reading this thread form the botttom up. Your buddy, Toe Jam Man, started this crap. If you want to get into the dance, welcome.

Now what has Amat done lately? Let's see, 2007 D3 Girls Basketball State Runner Up, 2007 D5 Basball Champs, 2007 D5 Wrestling Champs.

Perhaps you can tell us what your school has done lately. Please don't get Carpal Tunnel with all your typing.

JJIMENEZ said:

Easy there...I never said I went to St. Paul. I just know of the rivalry bewteen your two schools, thats why I said GO St. Paul (plus I know a few people there.) Although I think they dropped to Div. 3 cause of enrollment and what not.

I just got sick of all the Rosemead bashing and the school pride for the ol' alma mater kicked in and I finally had to say something.

but still...

I'm tired of Amat people thinking like their 'ish dont stink!! You guys always jump on people whom disagree with you. YOU ARE A PRIVATE SCHOOL. With your enrollment and recruiting (whether you want to admit it or not all private schools do it, some just do it better than others)You should be a so called powerhouse. You could pluck the gifted athletes out of any local area you want.

I'd just like to see what you would be able to do with the 'Meads PUBLIC SCHOOL demographics and talent pool. 'Cause I think we aren't doing to bad with what we got, always battling it out for 1st or 2nd in our league and say what you want about the MVL, but in the past 5-6 years 3 teams from that league have gone on to the C.I.F divison semi-finals.

Not one to stick up for anybody. Every time we kick a Swordsmans rear end on the gridiron we are certainly more relevant than them.

amat CIF Titles in Boys Basketball, Wrestling, Girls Track and Field, and multiple Girls Basketball and Baseball Championships in the last FIVE years make them pretty relevant in those sports too.

When was the last time the slime beat amat in anything? and what league/division is st paul in ? (after years in the Angelus/Del Rey League and in DI)

Hey I've been to Amat's wrestling matches. Particulary against St. John Bosco, now that is a great rivalry. We came close to winning CIF in 2001 by a few lousy points. Watched great wrestlers like Jason Leach, the Sanchez brothers, Oscar Meza to name a few etc. I just didn't think too much for Coach Pierre. Barbosa still coaching?

Speaking of recruiting, none of Northviews top wrestlers from the last few years even live in Northviews district !!! A few of Amats kids practiced this summer up at Rio Hondo with coach Taz & alot of the current & former Rosemead kids. Rosemeads kids are a tough/physical bunch & were great to workout with ! Good luck this season.

LancerMania : Can't wait til next Friday ! But, you should come out & support ur Lancer Wrestling Team !!! Lots of current & former F-ballers & B-Ballers on team who were not given much of a chance cuz of either size or ??? Amat had 2 CIF Champs & 2 State Qualifiers last season & should have more this yr. Wally Pipp was a pretty good Yankee 1st basemen when he decided to take a day off due to a little sickness. A little known sub started in his place. That turned out all right for Lou Gehrig as he appeared in the next 2,130 games.

Transfers (defections?) and injuries happen - and you move on, hoping someone else steps up to fill in.

We are happy Daylon is back, THAT'S IT! We never said he was going to be our savior and bring us back to the top all by himself. He came back because he WANTED TO GIVE BACK TO THE SCHOOL!

Where in the hell did we say "WATCH OUT"? Find that post for me. We also know very well we have not made the playoffs in a couple of years, we don't need you to remind us. It's a fact that we accept.

You started your crap on the other Amat thread and you started it again here too. The only thing you got right is this is not an Amat website or newspaper but this IS an Amat thread, and as in the other threads that have preceeded this one and any others to follow, smart ass talk about will will not be tolerated by ANYONE from Amat.

BTW, I cordially invite you to attend any of our games just so you can see what we will do this year. I have some prime end zone seats I can fix you up with.

Not in August saying WATCH OUT here we come !Daylon's teams were WITHOUT A DOUBT VERY GOOD, as were ALOT of Amat teams of PAST !!! Daylon IS talking about the ol' days. When he said,"I'm just tired of hearing about the good ol' days, the good ol' days." he was implying is *WE NEED the good ol' days back! Lets not just HEAR about them, let's re-create them*

He followed that up by TALKING about the good ol' days in saying, " I feel I was part of the best teams (in Amat's history)."

The reason that WE (Daylon included) are talking about the good ol' days is
" I want these kids to experience what I experienced when I played here."

We are all saying the same thing! Did you not read what he said?

"It's one of the things that got me (to go to high school) here. When I came here, the talk was about Eric Bienemy, about Scott Fields. ... I wanted to be part of something special."

You NEED to talk about that tradition in hopes taht those that are there at present will aspire to achieve the same level. A Trojan of all people should understand that. From the sound of your age you probably roamed University of South Central during a pretty down period, and I bet you heard tons about the past.

Daylon, came into a situation where their are a lot of silent stars on that young amat team. His wisdom can only benefit what already is a stellar group of young men that have a lot to prove.

In my opinion, not only is Daylon going to add to their program, but by visiting Amat's practice quite a few times. I believe Daylon will also learn how to be a Coach. Amat has a staff that will benefit from his experience, but it will also benefit Daylon to be around people (Coaches) who love the players and want to teach the kids.

Go AMAT BLUE.
