I should have realized you were not just a well educated man, like MTC, but you are clarvoyant as well. You should have stopped while you were ahead before your true colors became apparent. You say "Well, if one & done is the truth - I see no flaws". Hell, Joe, we havn't played the first game of the season! The problem with you Joe, is your just like Mike. You like to hear your voice (or in this case, read your own words). How do you tell a team "you won't be better than one and done before the first game is played? Do you tell your son, you will not amount to much in life? Maybe you do, but I don't. Why not get on the blog and broadcast to the world, hey son, you won't amount to much in life.

Well, if one & done is the truth - I see no flaws. There are a bundle of schools that would look at one & done as a good season, if that's all that they are capable of aspiring to. I tell you what, if someone sold my son short - he would not have lost confidence in himself nor would I have to deal with my kids' anger. He'd be pretty determined to prove them wrong. And he might even listen to their suggestions along the way.

My son, who is a senior on the team, is absolutely offended by Clones remarks as are many other players.

Joe Amat and yourself are not in the same situatuation as Glendora parents. Yes, we can "suck it up" but the kids lose confidence in themselves and the coaching staff. I know personally this to be true.

So, you can laugh all you want from the outside looking in, but as a GHS parent, I have to deal with my kids' anger.

If Clone or anyother GHS supporter has good solutions to some of our problems, why not meet with the coaching staff and help us overcome these issues instead of broadcasting on a blog. I'm not taking Covina lightly. Areas I can't wait to see tomorrow night are the young O-Line and how they pick up and read, the young "Kluz" who should have confidence, the kicking game and the game plan.

Yes, MTC and the lancer faithful have had our fun in the past. He's slammed more than a few blog entries from some of our more blind supporters.

The one thing that Clone and I hate the most is myiopia. At times the "buttton wearers", wherever they are, think that because the bagpipes blow or the "Men Wear Blue and Gold" that it will overcome all obstacles. FALSE. Recognize the problem. Reassure the coaches and players that they have our support. Make the adjustments. Then GET IT DONE. If not - you'll hear about it. Too many supporters skip the first step and assume that all will be fine. Those are the ones that MTC jumps on - regardless of school.

However, he has also recognized that their are some amat stalwarts who are not afraid to address problems and see taht there are things we need to do to get back to the level that we expect of ourselves. For that Mike has become somewhat of a fan.

Momentum is a very powerful vice in high school sports. I agree preseason games especially a team's initial first game of the year many times the teams that are more self-disciplined and execute better obviously win. If you lose the game of turnovers, field position, and time possession then the outcome is absolutely almost always going to be a loss. I think the team thatis most prepared in every facet of that first game the best will win and obviously like one blogger said Podley had his team ready to play. Bottom line: Football is a game of situations and Bill Walsh was the master at game preparation thus why he was so successful. Football players have to be functionally intelligent and God willing gifted with speed! Glendora this week will definitely be your litmus test for this year especially after losing last week and having to play probably a much tougher opponent in the Tartans. I was at the Covina game vs Bonita and I must say Covina was outplayed by Bonita both in skill positions and coaching. Come on, Covina had the ball in the second qtr on the 2 or 3 yrd line and choose 4 consecutive qb keeps up the middle to no avail. Is that the only goal line play Covina has? Do you think this will surprise any future opponents?

Perhaps as the season progresses the Colts will gain experience. This is not nearly the same team as last year. Lots of heart and spirit for sure.

As far as Glendora goes, Covina wont win this game or even come close. But, take this time to work out new plays or players. You will gain some valuable experience against this tough Tartan team.

Covina went on an impressive yet grinding drive with its first possesion, this drive resulted in a TD run by Charles Shorts that was called back by a penalty. Momentum was lost when it was called back and Covina forgot how to move the ball and went 3 and out, the penalty was a block to the back and in my opinion set the tone for the game.

On Covinas next 2 possesions the ball was turned over and Bonita capitalized on both of these turnovers with TD's, what should have been a score of 7-0 in Covinas favor was now 14-0 in Bonitas favor due to an untimely penalty and 2 turnovers.

Covina will be fine if we can build early momentum and hold onto the ball, week 2 against Glendora will determine quite a bit about the Colts this year. Lets say I still have some optimism even though the first game out does concern me.

Open enrollment policies and having public and private schools under the same banner has handcuffed CIF's ability to deal with transfers. Anyone who has any involvement with CIF knows that they are trying to limit transfers as much as possible to a legitimate change of residence.

Because of open enrollment within districts, CIF got out of the game of determining initial eligibility. However you get there, you are eligible at the school you first enroll in, even if there are 20 schools between your home and where you are enrolled.

Until this year, if you transferred without a change of address you had to sit out a year of varsity competition unless you successfully filed a hardship waiver (which are difficult to get approved). The state legislature recently got involved however because parents were complaining about not having options if their student was not happy at whatever school they chose. With the state legislature threatening to force unrestricted transfers CIF has decided as a compromise to allow transfers between the 9th and 10th grade for any reason without the loss of a year of varsity eligibility.

As to the number of transfers, with the density of high schools in this area, coupled with most district policies of open enrollment, it is not difficult to move from one attendance area to another and trigger the legitimate move exception to get to the high school of your choice without losing any eligibility. This is especially true for families that rent rather than own a home.

To move to or from a private school you still need to have a change of address that moves you out of whatever public school attendance area you were in. The move you make does not necessarily need to get you closer to your new school, just out of your previous attendance area, even if it was for a school the athlete had never enrolled in.

One other interesting caveat is that you can move into or out of a boarding school (as a boarding student) once without a loss of eligibility no matter what grade you are in.

Sorry about your opening loss. I wasn't at the game but do you think the Miramonte League is that much better than the Valle Vista League or were there other reasons for such a lopsided victory? I fully expected Covina to beat Bonita but afterwards am beginning to think Bonita plays football at just an entirely different level like San Dimas beating Gladstone meaning the Valle Vista League is that much better than the Montview League? I don't know just a thought, what do you think?

Obviously, there are many other reasons, but that's my two cents. I'm sure other bloggers can shed some light too.

My limited brain resources recall Jim Jastrab leaving SH for LA after his freshman year while his family still lived about a mile away from SH. I know this sounds petty compared to what happens now but back then it was huge, not to mention he was a hell of a player. The next one I recall was Jason Wolak leaving Covina to play at HATED rival SH in 87. I also remember it took damn near an act of congress to get this done and today it seems to be like switching girlfriends in HS. As to all of the video highlights comments, all I can say is that we're doing our best under the circumstances. We're not ESPN, Fox or any other major network and don't pretend to be. They have multi-million dollar budgets and sponsors. We have an extremely tight budget, so that means we use interns, and correspondents, who are mostly starting out and will get better with practice. Three years ago I never thought they would be sending me out to a practice with a video camera, and asking that I interview coaches while holding the camera at the same time. Even shooting video of a practice and figuring out the different angles and when to zoom in and out is challenging. But these are the requirements of sports writers today, especially prep writers, and we'll get better at it. I think most of you enjoy listening to what a coach has to say on video and how he or she says it instead of always reading it in print. And even though our highlights shouldn't be confused with what you see on television, just like technology, what we deliver to you will improve over time.

The pass interferance play wasn't called cause the ball was way overthrown at least thats what it looked like in the video, I believe if there is no chance to catch the ball then they don't call the penalty, am I right or wrong on this?Even without the contact it looked like the reciever wouldn't make the catch, so basically all we had was an overthrown ball.

were of any significance to the game, The first one with Wagner stepping on the inside of the cone

Pretty good start from a personnel standpoint. Players steppped up and answered some question marks. Wags is the real deal, Lenhart was solid and others showed they can hang with that caliber of talent. As blu mentioned, Los Osos had 9 returning starters and a #27 ranked team in the State by CalPreps. they were big and athletic, as many of the teams on the amat schedule will be. No excuses about "week zero or opening game jitters" - it was week zero and opening game for Los Osos too.

Now we have confirmed that we can step on the field with anybody from a player personel standpoint. It made for a good HS game to start the year and really, about as good a performance as the lancers could expect. The coaching staff did a good job getting the kids ready to play.

Now what we do with those players along with the game-time and half-time adjustments that we make is another thing that is just a learned skill. Play calling, time management, and other strategies are something that comes with trial and error and most good coaches learned from mistakes made in the early stages of their career. We are what we are and we've got to deal with growing pains. Good effort and improvement is on the horizon.

...and BTW, I'm not sure that I'm into Photo Boy trying to stir the pot by editing and posting Hot/Controversial plays - beginning with the alleged PI call against Los Osos. No one needs to make excuses and there aren't any amat people complaining about that one. Over the course of the season, it pretty much works out anyway. Games rarely hinge on an officials call. You learn to deal with it. A year ago their was a "phantom TD video" in a Damien game that never materialized or proved anything.

Stick to pushing the record button and let Freddie communicate with the masses.

Hello Mike the Clone and eveyone else,

First of all, like my dad still says, if you have nothing good to say, don't say anything. Why you gotta be a hater pal? Echoing Fred's comment, Nisha never did sports. She was news. Now, I have to give kudos to Amanda for at least standing up in front of the camera, without a script and a few minutes to work thoughts out and on the fly giving it a try. Like everyone's first time out, I think she will get more and more comfortable with our production ways and she will continue to deliver a better and better product for all you guys out there.

On another note, no one has mentioned that flagrant pushing in the end zone in the 2nd half (have to look at my video again) by Los Osos #8 against Amat's #2 that should have been called pass interferience and put Amat at the 1 yd.-line and a 1st down. Instead, the ball went the other way and there we have the loss.

That was a tough game to swallow. Team Amat was its own worst enemy. Blame it on first game, zero week jitters but I blame it on too many players going both ways. Amat owned this game folks. With that said, I do have to admit, this Amat team does have the weapons to compete with most of the Pac-5. Los Osos is a great team which is no secret. But once again, we have witnessed halftime adjustments that favor the opposition. Wagner was a monster...especially againts a defense that returned 9 starters from a team that was able punch it out againts a Tem Canyon team that ran over Damien last year. This was one of those games in which a play here or there could have possibly ended up being an Amat rout. But rout is was not. And to be honest...it was a pretty exiting game. Zero week madness has its advantages..and disadvantages.

Got me an idea this morning. What if I do the HOT/CONTROVERSIAL video highlights BESIDES the very hot VIDEO GAME OF THE WEEK! The highlights would only include to top plays of the game that meant something to the game (5 or 6 or so)! A little commentary would be added to the plays since the VIDEO OF THE WEEK can only be straight forward news of how the game went! Maybe our web dude can make it so that it shows in blog-type so that people can comment as well on the plays seen there and comment on our commentary. Thoughts from Amat's game ... I underestimated running back Marcus Wagner. He's the real deal, shifty, with breakaway speed, and is without a doubt one of the best in the Valley if not one of the top two or three. He had over 100 yards in the first quarter, and finished with 208, and had it not been for cramping, he could have gone for much more. Even QB Nick Lenhart showed something after a nervous start. He's going to be fine. But you can tell everyone was a little tense, and even with the 28-14 halftime lead, you knew it wasn't safe. This is why it's hard to compare Amat to anyone else. I watched San Dimas-Gladstone, and no disrespect, but this is two COMPLETELY different levels of football. I knew that already, but it's reaffirming to see it in person. I can't wait to watch the Glendora's, Damien's, South Hills', Los Altos' and Charter Oak's to compare. I know it's a loss, but Los Osos is as good as anyone we've got around here. Amat's defense is somewhat suspect considering the opposition it will face the rest of the way. I don't know if they will finish over .500 with Orange Luttheran at home next week followed by two road games. But for SGV comparisons, lets be honest, Amat IS one of the area's top teams regardless of what follow's next. But unfortunately, like I've stated before, they're going to be judged by their own tradition, and based on that, they've still got an uphill battle to fight, and it's not getting any shorter.

First things first, heres wishing no lasting effects from collision on field that caused N.D. player convulsions for several minutes. After approx. 10 minutes he was able to leave the field on his own feet then ten minutes later was taken to the hosp. A Huskie player also was injured on a different play and needed assistance to leave the field.
Both teams seemed to be working out the kinks a bit and worked through 10 play series with equal success and S.O. was able to score a t.d. near the end. Both teams seemed to really benefit from the scrimmage and were very satisfied with the Valley vs Valley scrimmage.
My take, I'd say the Huskies more than held their own. Good Luck to S.O. the rest of their season !

SD's quarterback will need to improve his play. He missed some wide open receivers. GHS should just play that tall QB. He will take his lumps. But, he looks like he can be quite good. Hopefully, he is not a senior.

I wish "Happy Rock" a great deal of luck this year and hopefully they will improve. But, it looks like GStone will have another long season this year. I know the Montview League is weak with the exception of Duarte. But, it will have to be really bad if they finish in the top 3 positions in their league.

Obviously you haven't seen him play at higher levels. When he is EVENLY matched, he can bring it like the stud he is.

Stop the bashing on the kid. Stop the envy. Let the kid play and HIS numbers will do the rest.

Went to the SD / GS game last night. Saw what I expected to see. GS was out matched by a bigger, stronger and faster team. GS has some gutsy players and I give them credit for their spirited play, but this was a boring game. In my opinion Nico was not the running back I thought I would see. Good, yes! But the next valley stud? Far from it. No speed, runs upright, does not like to block. I watched Nico time after time try to block players with his hands and not with his body. Time after time I would watch his assignment make a tackle. In my opinion being a great player is doing all of the little things and not just racking up big yards and scoring touchdowns on lesser opponents. But hey, this is just my take.

Nico is not playing at 100%. This team is solid all around and the defense pounded GStone all night long. Granted GStone is not very good but it is not easy to keep any team from scoring.
GStone kids played until the end though, so I give them credit for that. They did'nt quit but their coaches did. Good luck the rest of the way GStone.

I'm glad to hear all the talking coming out of Riverside is not nearly as negative as last year. I mean I know they have no shot of beating Damien, but at least their new coach seems to be putting things in perspective. Yesterday I heard they couldn't even garner a snap from center at both levels...umm, first day stuff coach. Let's just rack this one up to first year jitters, and the fact that they are facing a sleeping giant in Damien.

The game last night was not challenging and unfair to Gladstone. San Dimas should schedule more competitive teams if they want to impress anybody. Strength of schedule is what its all about baby!

What I saw was the wing-t at work. The wing backers running untouched while the FB having to grind out the yards.

Barbone is a strong kid with good speed not track speed, but who’s playing track? He’s a very good player and will bring excitement to SGV.

It appears that teams will have to worry about more than Barbone. All backs looked speedy and compliment each other. Pretty good balance.

Gladstone was the worst HS team that I've seen play in some time. They need some serious work. Nico did well, but any one could have peeled off 200+ yards on that team, seriously! All you hear about is strength of schedule, like HS has a BCS. I don't see this game helping the Saints. Maybe as a JV scrimmage. I didn't see the "new" nico speed. He would break a hole and couldn't run away from anyone. The two other backs carrying the ball for the saints, ran just as well and maybe faster. With all that, the Saints will still do well. I don't see NV stopping them regardless.

Wow, your not a very good judge of a three man team in the backfield with size, strength and speed.

Gladstone is bad, but that kid at San Dimas is a very good football player.
