South Hills hosting Sherman Oaks Notre Dame? Sort of.

| | Comments (39) |

It's just a scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 31, at Covina District Field (7 p.m.), but a can't-miss scrimmage for Huskies fans eager to know what to expect in 2007. There are ten "Week Zero" games across the valley that evening, but something tells me there will be a fairly big crowd at the District Field. Notre Dame is obviously too big and powerful, but can the Huskies hold their own?

Step up man! Quit hidding behind the water bucket(or a screen name) and tell the coach to put you in. You may think that SHHS is over matched Hell even little Idaho is taking on Big O'l USC this week end. Thats how you test your salt. SHHS has plenty of talent in its own right. Like I said. Its a a challenge these kids look forward to. They didnt bust their butts in weight room all summer just to look good on beach. Oh and the idiot that thought about this test of wills is a friend of mine. He's also respected district wide and known in many D-1 circles. Whats your story? Monday conversations around the water cooler!

A coach answering back on the blog. That's Bush League. You have to let these comments roll off your back coach. Hard to think Bogan allowed you to make this Move.

Being a Covina High fan, I really can't say that much. Altough, back in the mid-90s, Covina-South Hills match-ups were among the best in the SGV, especially in football. And I cannot see the current Covina team beating SO-ND. I have all the props in the world for Coach Bogan, I really think this scrimmage will show the TRUE colors of the "HUSKIES NATION". (thank god this is one doesnt count)I dont believe South Hills has it in them in the PRE-SEASON game!

Jhykron said:

Hmmm... a lot of patronizing comments aimed at South Hills here.

Some people must have missed when they took Esperanza to OT a couple years back.

Coach D said:

Congratulations SH for stepping up and playing a top notch team even if it is a scrimmage, it is a step in the right direction. It can only be a be great learning experience for the kids and coaches barring injuries and maybe other AD's will follow suit and schedule more high caliber teams for their season openers. Great for the SGV and fans.

Anonymous said:

I respect SH for scheduling a scrimmage with SD. It is a first step in the right direction to get a top SGV school to get some resect and recognition outside of the SGV even if it is only a scrimmage. Hopefully, more AD's will follow and step up to play a full non league schedule with other high caliber top dogs in the following seasons to come.

Hopefully everyone will stay healthy and learn and improve their skill set in preparation for league schedule.

First off, my name is James Escarcega and I am one of the assistant coaches at South Hills HS. After reading some of the posts that have written about this Friday night, I could only take so much.

For all of you that we are crazy for doing this and are wanting to point the fingers...point them right at me. We have opening for a scrimmage back in January and when I found out that Notre Dame needed a scrimmage, I raced to the phone and called coach Rooney to see if they would be interested in scrimmage us.

After a conversation of more than 30 minutes (and it was a great talk) we not only decided to have the scrimmage, but that we would have it at District Field.

All we are doing is trying to make both teams a lot better. I think it speaks highly that a program such as Notre Dame would travel from the San Fernando Valley to compete with South Hills. And we are more than humbled that they think highly of our program to scrimmage us.

One of the most important things to keep in mind are that the quarterbacks are going to be in red jerseys, and that there will be no blitzing in the scrimmage. Last thing anyone needs is for someone the caliber of Dayne Crist getting seriously hurt.

I hope that if you come to the scrimmage Friday night, that you will be watching great athletes in action and great coaches doing great work. It will probably look a little ragged, (because it is the first competition of the year for both teams with pads on) but at the end of the night, both teams will shake hands and will wish one another a great season.

Thanks for reading and best of luck to everyone in the SGV this season.

Blu Orca,
I've seen several high level high school football games through the years, Mission Viejo vs Hart,[CIF title] Mission V. vs Chino, [CIF Title]. Los Altos vs ST. Paul, [CIF Title], St. Paul vs
Colton,[CIF Title], Los Altos vs Orange Lutheran
[CIF title} plus several St Paul games in the 70's & 80's at the pit, I went to Catholic school at ST Mariannes in Pico Rivera for 8 years, most of those kids went to St Paul or El Rancho, which is the reason I atended so many St. Paul games in those days. I am familiar with the high caliber of play at the pac 5 level. You must have a short memory cause West Co just played Mater Dei last year, they also played Mission Viejo in 99, & 2000.

VANNER said:

Your right ! We have'nt laid eyes on a Real pac 5 school. That's because we live in the SGV ! He he he.

bluorca said:

Hahahahaa!

I bet none of you have ever laid eyes on a real Pac-5 school. I'm willing to bet the farm that none of you have ever attended a Pac-5 contest. Passing leagues are a complete joke when it comes to judging the caliber of any team.

So tell me Dan...What Pac-5 teams have you witnessed during a regular season?

VANNER said:

We shall see if the Huskies can hold their own this coming Friday night. I feel they can and will suprise alot of doubters. As to why South Hills would take on a lofty "Pac5" team ? Well its like this. Its how a team gets better by taking on great competition and by the way, The exact formula South Hills has used to get to the level they are at today.

Amat Fan said:

Amat beat ND at Claremont but it still is only passing league.

Dan said:

Who's the fighting Irish? & did Amat even play at the Edison tournament? I don't think so.

It's fighting Knights not Irish said:

Hahaha battle of the beaches, who are kidding? This is no beach contest where you can kick sand in your opponents face, this being just a scrimmage...is nevertheless a full contact scrimmage. I think the Huskies fans will get a first hand taste and some humble appreciation of what a capable PAC5 can do to your team. Just watch, and maybe you will also appreciate Amat's schedule.

SHHS is taking this too seriously. Notre Dame on the other hand will just look at this scrimmage, at just that a scrimmage.

I was at the 7 on 7 matchup when the Irish passed against Amat and the Huskies. I would have to say that I was more impressed with Amat. Their offense was well balanced, while their defense just flew to the ball. I hate to admit but Amat beat us too in this summer passing league game. And they were definitely the better of the two.

Yes, I will be there next friday for the scrimmage, and will see nothing but a practice game for the irish. I wouldn't be surprised if the Irish's sophmore team could give the Huskies a run for the money. Cause we'll pass, but I know we'll run all over the Huskies this is real football now.

Dan said:

Anonymous,
I realize passing league is no indicator of reality and I get the feeling that ND will be
much more physical than SH.
I was refering more to the athleticism of the skill players, apparently SH. was able to keep
up speed wise with ND and contain their skill players enough to outscore them.

anonymous,
you can't walk thru preseason in a frikin' bubble!!! your never gonna be more healthy than week zero anyway.. we get banged a little, ok. maybe we'll remember in december what that feels like, and not let it happen again!

Anonymous said:

O' Danny boy, (Dan),

This a contact sport as you know and not passing league 7 on 7 with 8 seconds to throw the ball, it is 11 on 11 with hitting, big differance, You know this, please dont take a passing league game and compare it to the real thing even tho they will not let you hit the QB in this scrimmage. ND is going to hit your other players and then you will know you made a mistake taking on these big boys from the pac5 a week before your opener. Hope you all come out injury free. What a shame that would be if you lost Well or Kluz because of this meaningless game.

Dan said:

Anonymous, [which ever one you are]
I hate to defend our arch rival but
You posted "size wise & athletic wise South Hills is not even on the same map".
You might be right as for size wise as I hear Notre Dame is huge this year, but as for athletic
wise, South Hills beat Notre dame in this years Edison passing tournament. I wouldn't quite call that "not even on the same map".

mrlippy said:

the shhs scrimmage should be a good prep for them. no matter who you or where you play, there is always risk of injury. i understand nd was happy with the invite to come to the sgv. they should bring a few fans w/ them too. shhs did very good against these guys at the battle of the beach, i'm sure they're looking for a lil' payback, especially since "radio" went off on their stud qb. wells had a good game too. come on out and see the new, old school offense shhs has put in, can you say option? get ready sgv for the most explosive offense to be seen in years!!!!!

J Bowden,

You sound like a Mickael Vick Clone. Knock off the dog Analogies....Make sure you look at the size differance when you go out to see ND vs SH...it is USC vs Citrus College....Size wise and athletic wise SH is not on the same map as these guys.....you will see....hope your boys stay healthy coming out of this one...who was the idiot that said yes to this bone head idea...I dont think some of your parents are real crazy about putting their boys on line scrimmage or not it does get physical reguardless...remember passing league was no walk in the park and kids got banged up....what you think they will play at 1/2 speed?...not a chance they are hungry to play after all that practice and no one to take it out on......I am not for this game but it is what it is....hope everyone makes it out ok.

There aren't many maps that include Chino Hills HS in the SGV. Damn near in Corona, and certainly in San Bernardino County. Maybe because they compete in the Sierra League they are an honorary member, but in my book you are either a Star News team a Trib team or a Daily Bulletin team-you can't be both.

That being the case, amat at #72 is the highest ranking SGV team going into the season on CalPreps, for what it's worth.

JBowden said:

Its not the size of the dog in the fight But the size of the fight in the dog. Pac5 Division 1 yada yada yada who cares? Sherman Oaks ND is just another bunch of high school kids. They make mistakes and they bleed just like everybody else. It will be a great challenge for SHHS Go Huskies!!!

Don said:

T T is right on regarding the CalPreps ranking. The Freeman model is “weighted” based upon a team's success (or lack of success) against the competitive level of their opponents. A Team like Diamond Ranch going 1-4 against the likes of Servite, Edison, Chino Hills, Ayala, and Oaks Christian end up with a higher ranking than another team who might go, say 3-2 against the Mt. Baldy League.

As such, though, the validity of this kind of modeling increases with the amount of data. The ratings don't really start to shape up until week 5 or so.

perusing... said:

I think it should be noted that Chino Hills is ranked #62 in the state...the highest ranking school in the SGV area. Way above #166 and #256!

Tommy Tartan said:

bluorca & Joe Colt,

Cal Preps is actually pretty good for what it is...a computer model that is designed to give teams a score based on who they play and how they do. Win more and you move up. Beat bad teams and you don't change much. Lose to good teams and you don't change much. If teams you beat do well, it helps your score, etc...

As for your concerns, Joe Colt, in reading this year's info. on it they are basing the initial rating mostly on how the teams finished last year. Where they can, they manually try to look at what teams lost and have back and factor that in some, but based on what I can see, it's a lot about last year until the games begin. Then you will see things change week to week.

blucora,

Dude, what list did you look at?!?! Mater Dei is #4 IN THE NATION on their list. They are the top dog in the entire state, S. Cal and Southern section (along with several Trinity teams). If you clicked on the 'California Bowl' button, there was your mistake. The Cal bowl is divided into 3 divisions by SCHOOL SIZE. So most if not all of the Catholic Schools are in Div. II or III. Div. I is made up of only large public schools. Is there anything else the Tartan Man can help you guys with? lol

Seriously though, it is a pretty good system but it takes a few games to start really showing where teams should be. I think it does a good job of coparing a team in a higher division playing tough competition and playing .500 against a lower division team beating up on lesser competition. (in fact your 2 teams are great examples) How do you compare Amat to Covina? Well, at the end of the day (end of last year) I think this system was pretty close on that. Just my opinion (and some computer's)

Speaking of Wells, has his transfer been approved by CIF. I see that Wilson's move to St. Paul has been approved.

bluorca said:

The Calpreps Freeman ratings are BS.

Mater Dei is not on the list even though they are supposed to win the Pac-5. Actually there are no Serra or Trinity teams ranked. It's no secret that the Trinity is the most powerful league in So Cal.

FYI

Dorian Wells was injured and did not play against Notre Dame last season.

Calpreps is interesting but sketchy, they have Covina ranked at 166 and South Hills at 256... Am I missing something here?

Nobody's "inflicting damage" in a pre-season practice scrimmage. Hasn't anyone here ever been to one of these things?

BTW, for even more meaningless fun, check out Calpreps.com. The pre-season freeman ratings are up.

Fighting Knights said:

If ND wants to inflict some serious damage it will. They will face Canyon Country, the reigning 2006 State champs in their first game. So this will be just a tune up practice to prepare for that matchup and this can easily turn into a one side romp. Wells might still be traumatized from last years beat down.

If you want to see what the real deal in a PAC5 team, come and see the fighting knights in action.
Watch Wes Horton 6'6" 240 lbs DE and Dayne Christ 6'5" 230 lbs QB, just to name a few, tear it up all night long.

Jhykron said:

Well, it's a scrimmage.

10 plays to score from x yard line.
A couple kickoffs, a couple punts.
Both sides practicing same number of plays.
Reps for most of the roster.
No tackling the QB.
No scorekeeping.

In other words, very little to do with how each side would coach a real game. I'm not sure why a glorified practice is worth getting excited over.

They shut down Wells last year in a 45-0 thumping to Amat and they will shut him down again. If Thaddeus Brown is running the ball and Crist is airing it out So. Hills we be done quicker than Amat. I do give SH the credit for having the Gonads to play a scrimmage.....Hope SH comes out injury free tho...Not this close to the Trubuco Hills game you schedule a Pac5 team...but you never know?

if dayne crist and wes horton gets significant playing time, SH will get lit up hotter than iraq after a US airstrike

Can the Huskies hold their own?...of course you think ND will throw everyone at them like it is a real game.......they are there to toy with So. Hills. not a fair comparison. Very dumb of SH to do this and risk injury leading into week 1.
