Training Camp: South Hills off and running
Showed up bright and early for Huskies practice on Friday, and there was media man/coach/drill instructor James Escarcega rounding up the troops and firing off a pre-practice speech. I've known James for a while and he's quite a character, and a great guy to get the players' juices jangling that early in the morning. Meanwhile, the legend, coach Steve Bogan was off in a classroom, waiting for the right moment to make his entrance. When Bogan finally walked through the gates I grabbed him for a conversation, figuring Escarcega was enjoying his quality time with the guys. Not two minutes into our chat there's military-man Escarcega, colorfully chiding Bogan to leave the media alone, and screaming at me to go back to the Star-News. What an introduction to Huskies football. But Bogan, he's all class and understands the huge expectations Huskies fans have, especially after the arrival of wide receiver Dorian Wells, who transferred from
Bishop Amat. Bogan marvels at Wells' big-play ability, but cautions that some of the expectations are over-blown, emphasizing that they have plenty to prove after a 6-6 season in 2006. But clearly, this is a talented cast that already includes Kebin Umodu, a first-team All-CIF Southwest Division first-team defensive end, along with Damon Kuklinski and Evan Heard - both returning second-team All-San Antonio league running backs. There's quarterback Brandon Parham and linebackers like Chris Bowden, Wayne Goss and others. I don't know if they're clearly the area's top team, but there's no doubt they're among the top two or three.
South Hills opens the season on Sept. 7 against Trabuco Hills at Covina District Field.

I moved out of Rosemead YEARS AGO . I do not know if Rosemead JAA is still any good . Back in the 80's when I played we were pretty good .Things CHANGED , no more BIG KIDS . All that is there is well , I'll not go there . And I KNOW Los Altos should WORK RHS . Rosemead is playing with nothing to lose , I just hope LOS ALTOS really does not run it up & uses RHS as a warm up , and let's RHS see what is going for them . Good luck to everyone this week .
TM
Conqybine,
South Hills is 3 & 1 vs La Habra since 2000, just wondering how La Habra owns South Hills.
Big Panther are you for Rosemead or Diamond Ranch?
If your Rosemead & coming from the MVL it laughable that you put down the San Antonio.
If your from Diamond Ranch, you got a decent program out there but West Co & South Hills both have handled DR most of the times they played.
TB is going to punk SH and then La Habra who owns them is playing SH at home the next week?....sounds like 0-2 to start with for SH..........now thats a CIF bowl team we are looking at?...
I hope south hills is ready for trabuco hills. They looked like BYU at a lineman compitition at Don Lugo this summer.
Big
Panther,
Anthony Gonzalez graduated and there is nothing there for Rosemead. Heck Rosemead is becoming the new version of Kepple and San Gabriel high. Los Altos is going to run the score up on you guys. what a A-- kicking you guys are going to take coming to Los Altos on the 7th of September. So Hills would kill you guys....Rosemead and a Walnut would stack up nice...Rosemead is done even your farm the Rebels are done....nothing coming out of your JAA team talent wise.
Big Panther,
Heck Walnut of the San Antonio owns your team...

Big Panther,
You can call the San Antonio what you want, but they beat your Panthers pretty easy the last time they played.
San Antonio League
WHAT IS THAT ! THATS THE ROOKIE LEAGUE IN SGV
Fred, when will you be visiting Los Altos?
Amat Mom :
Wrestling is probably the " ONLY " sport at Amat were there are no politics or favortism involved !!! U earn ur spot on the Mat, 1 on 1. Spots are earned on a weekly basis by challenges. If someone challenges for a spot & beats that person 2 out 3 times, then it's their spot that week. Wrestling is a very demanding sport & not for everyone. It does not matter how much money u donate to the school ! Infact, the school does'nt even support the Wrestling Team. We (Parents) run our own Tournaments, drive our kids to tournaments, work our own snack bars & donate lots of time, $ & food to take care of our Boys & Girl(s).
Heck, there was'nt even 1 Administrator from the school there this yr when we won C.I.F. ???
Dan,
By all means , yes, transferring to public school if it benefits your kids playing time and the politics at a private are holding him down. Lots of that goes on at Amat in all sports we just pay attention to the popular sports like football and baseball but basketball, soccer, softball, wrestling, volleyball, track dont think it is not happening there where kids transfer out as well. Amat is a sports school and kids come from all over to try to get a piece of notoriety from just playing at Amat. It works for some and it does not work for others, some has to to with the talent level and some has to do with politics and some just dont like the catholic school program. Amat is not for everyone and going to your local public school is not a bad choice. Schools like Diamond Bar and Walnut have some good teachers and high standards for studies. Lots of parents lose patients, and thats their right and you move on. The bottom line is unless you have a next level sports stud all parents should just hope the kid has fun playing sports in his HS years gets to graduate and move on to becoming something in college.
My Apologies Don,
I took the wrong view on your post and assumed you were applying it to this family.
Amat Mom,
I'm glad it worked out for your son, but I also
wouldn't blame someone if in the same situation
they left to their local public school so their son would have a chance to play.
Hey Dan, if you think I was putting the boy's return to W Co in a negative light, you misunderstood my post. The folks who need to get over anything are those who have problems with kids changing schools, for whatever reason. Go where you like, (if they'll take you). If it doesn't work out, move on.
Scads of kids leave private schools for a variety of reasons every year (as I wrote). You asked if I thought that makes them part of a lesser quality group? Not at all, although it might mean they should have shopped more carefully when they chose a school in the first place.
That being said, I do challenge the need of some parents to make excuses when they change schools. As far as I am concerned, that's between them and the CIF although if they do state something patently absurd, I have no trouble with calling them on it, (not this kid, as you point out, I don't know him or his family).
I did not see anything wrong in what Don stated. That was a top of the line take and my kid attends Amat. like all schools politics play a big role and money is a big issue for some families. Tuition does not seem to decrease only to increase every year. Sports kids can play at the local public HS and still have a good HS career. Private school politics are far greater than public shcools tho..Heck if I was GOLD Donor to that new gym over at Amat for $50k or higher you bet my kid would be starting with his average , normal talent like the next guy. If he is normal middle of the road he competes for his job no donation required. If he is stud material he is starting no donation required. If he is so so he sits plain and simple donation or no donation he sits but may get a play of two per year not per game. My kid got cut from baseball and has not picked up a baseball since but could start right now on any of the public schools baseball teams. He got no chance due to politics.....did we run to public..no he went to football and turned out to be a good football player as well...during soph. year the coach found out he played baseball from others on the existing team that played travel baseball with my kid..coach approached him and asked him to come out...his answer to coach was I am football player now I used to play baseball until I got here. This from a kid who never had any intention of playing football at Amat...it happens.
Don whats there to get over? a question was asked about a Mater Dei transfer and an answer was given, you know nothing about this kid or his family or why he transfered to West Co, so there is no need to put his transfer in a negative light. Personally I think its great that he is returning to his home area school where his younger bro is already attending.
Is there something wrong with a family changing their mind about sending their kid to a private
school? Having to shell out 8 to 10 grand a year can be tough for a lot families & sometimes its
not worth it in their minds. Do you think they are a lesser quality group than the families that stay with the private schools just because they change their mind? Your post sounds just a tad arrogant.
DON,
Well said and I would say that is pretty much the facts as parents start to find out what the costs are when sending a child to a parocial school. At best the tuition is the very tip of the iceberg. Not to mention the work load of being a successful student athlete because once they see the grades aren't what they should be they start to think " are we wasting our money because afterall he is not even starting."
The kid who transferred out of Mater Dei to West Covina is the same kid who transferred out of AMAT to Mater Dei. So I think thst is where the AMAT connection is. He left AMAT after Basketball season.
don-
i gotta go with the others. truer words were never spoken.
big daddy -- well start it up then and quit with the implications. you TOO seem to be on every page otherwise how would you always know where i was???
Don......
That was sweet!
Late!
Mike the Clone
Anonymous, you manage to be on every page. I'm not worried about the hits. I just want to talk about something else other than BA, SH, CO, ect.... What about NV, teams schedules, QB's, RB's Defensive Lines, Playmakers. I'M JUST READY FOR SOME FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS ACTION.
Don,
PERFECT !!!
The point about lots of kids transferring out of Mater Dei reminds me of the the post about Amat being a feeder or developmental program for other schools. So many people sign their kids up for a high powered athletic career at a Parochial school and have second thoughts it's not funny. Sometimes it's the money, sometimes the level of commitment. More often, it's the competition.
Here is how it goes: Mommie and Daddy have been following the teams in the local paper in {name your sport here} and since junior is the stud duck on his local (LL, PWF, JAAF, NJB) team, they think, “Hey, won't it be great when we get to make a scrapbook of Junior's achievements? Better hook him up with the team that is the paper the most, huh?
Freshman year comes and they discover a couple of interesting things. One, the $5,400 per year is for tuition only. The rest, as they say at Morton's Steakhouse, is ala carte, and costs more. Two, Junior comes home after the first day of practice and announces that there are nine other guys out for his position and they ARE ALL GOOD. (Well, all but the one fat kid whose Dad's name is on a plaque in the Gym, but I digress.) So the kid spends most of the season riding the pine and then finds out the football coach is pissed because he tried out for commie kickball or baseball instead of spending his eight months off in the weight room or a plyometric class.
Comes the end of the school year and they start thinking about how nice it would be to have that tuition dough in their pocket and Junior walking to the local HS three blocks away, (and hey, they still have a {name your sport here} team there, don't they?) This has been going on forever, it will never stop, ever. Get over it.
hey big daddy -- you sound like one of aram's boys - it aint about the number of hits, it's the middle of summer and people are busy and we are still on down time with HS sports. Not all of aram's topics were big hits either so chill and give it time. i think it's becoming more clear it's about the quality of hits and not the quantity of hits.
PASQY!!
Looking at the number of post, I see we are loosing intrest fast. We need a new topic!!! Can ya feel me!

Joe Amat thats interesting info about all the transfers out of Mater Dei, I don't know the specific reason for the player who went to West Co, but it would make sense as far as him getting more playing time being that Mater Dei is so loaded with talent this year. They seem to be the pac 5 favorite going into the season.
I Haven't heard of any Amat players transfering to West Co., but I also haven't been to any of the Hell week & two a day practices yet cause I've been working during the practice times. I sure am looking forward to the season though.
hey Fred, so when are you gonna go check out Covina and see what they got this year? it seems everyone is evaluating them and rating them poorly but haven't even seen them practice... maybe you should take a look and find out first hand what they're all about.
FYI,
During a conversation with an administrator from the CIF-SS, he said that "in any given year we deal with the eligibility of more players who transfer OUT OF Mater Dei than any school in the section."
Transferring OUT is not always a bad thing. Sometimes that means that competition for PT is not as great or the chance to play a different position, get more touches and be featured becomes more important (ie: McBride, Tamayo, etc at LA)
Mark Sanchez (future USC QB) transferred OUT of Santa Margarita to become a HS All-American at Mission Viejo and the same year Michigan Wolverine QB Jason Forcier transferred OUT of Mater Dei to St Augustines in San Diego (of course he took the train to MD from his San Diego home for two years). No one bemoaned the decline of those programs after those transfers.
Someone new comes in, you get over it, and you move on.
Thanks Dan for the update. Hey any word form the kid from Amat, is it true Amat is loosing another player.
Info,
Its true about the kid coming from Mater Dei,
He is from the West Covina area and his younger brother was already going to West Co., so its good to see West Co getting back one of its own
players from a private school, he looked like a decent player in the passing leagues.
As for the schedule, Lock high school is replacing Upland, not Baldwin Park,
West Co and Upland tried schedule each other but
Upland could not get out of their contract with
a team from Nevada, both teams wanted the game
but the contract was already made so Upland is
stuck with having to drive to Nevada.
Lock high school looks like a solid team in the city section and West Co will have their hands full with them. Last year they finished 8 wins & 4 losses they beat Woodland Hills Taft 44 to 22
in the first round playoffs and earlier in the season beat Narborne who is always a tough team
in the City section Marine league.
They also played Los Angeles Dorsey last season and lost by 1 point 17 to 18.

Good point, but somebody better explain that to Amat.
Hey Fred I heard one of the defencive backs for West Covia is a transfer from Mater Dei. This should be real cool for this kid because the first game is against them. Also I heard West Covina dropped the game against Baldwin Park and they are going to play Lock from Los Angeles at Home. Way to Go Bulldogs. West Covina has the hardest scheduel in the San Antonio League
1. Matre Dei
2. Lock From Los Angeles
3. Upland
4.Rancho Cucamonga
5.Ayala
6.South Hills
7.Charter Oak
8. Rowland
9. Nogales
Look out for the Bulldogs.... Also I dont know if its true but I heard a kid from Amat just transferd to West Covia also. If so who is he and what does he play. GOOD LUCK WC
i like this new blog better. havent been on in a while. it looks great.
whoever put charter oak 35

fred,
I hope south hills does'nt let sgv tribune down this year.It seems like thats the only team in the valley you guys want to talk about.I hope they prepare better this year than they did for charter oak last year.If you want to see some raw natural talent you should come up to diamond ranch and check it out.
FRED
Is there a way you can get these posts to the family or the OC Register?
I'm sure this family needs as much love and support they can receive right now!
We just are not suppose to bury our children.
My condolences to the Wilson family and the entire Beckman High School community. I am so sorry for your lose.
Oops i meant to say "who passed away" not "you"
As the Beckmen High Football Family (Irvine) mourns the loss of a teamate....my condolences are sent out to the whole team...this story has a valley conection....the head coach at Beckmen is Brian Mustain who played at Temple City High with Aram in the early 90's, he also was my o-line coach at Wilson High School in the late 90's before becoming the Head Coach at Wilson....Coach Mustain my sincere condolences to you and to the parents of the young man you passed away....Today we must refelect on this GAME that we play and love so much...and realize that it is just a game and that there are more important things that happen in life.
The Legend grives for his old coach

Prime Time, That was a class act! We should all take a moment and say a little prayer for the Wilson Family. We should also take time to talk with our boys and let them know that if they are not feeling well, they need to stop! Their health and life is more importaint than the game.
I would like to send my Blessing to the Wilson Family. Through Faith God will see you through this. I will keep your family in my prayers.
MOURNING A TEAMMATE: Teammates of Kenny Wilson console each other as they leave Beckman High School in Irvine Friday afternoon. Wilson, 16, died at the hospital after collapsing during practice.
TO THE FAMILY OF KENNY WILSON
I would like to express my deepest sympathy of the passing of your son. So sad to see a young man playing a sport he's enjoying and then losing his life!
I cannot even image what your family is going through. God Bless you all!
If anybody is intereted in this story, click on to ocregister.com
NV talk is talk! What have you done on the field??? What have you proven????? Until the season starts and you play the game what can you say??? All of a sudden yall act like yall are the busniess in the SGV. I wouldn't count my chickens before they hatched!
Northview is this year's version of the 06 Rowland. Lots of hype from the fans but will fall short.
P.S: Where has all the Rowland support been? Last year they were all over this blog. This year = Crickets.
for your information i think last year they started at least 18 or 19 underclassmen out of 22. and there were only 2 or 3 that were then juniors now seniors. Your talking about 16 or 17 sophmores now juniors that are coming back. theres no other team in there league maybe the valley that has such a now great junior class. But i must admit, when these juniors are gone northview will probbably be i hate to say it though, garbage.
go vikes class of 91!!!!!

hotsauce, Parham wasn't there, I can confirm it. Not going to speculate why, but it was a surprise. Maybe he showed up later.
i drove by the practice today early to see the hype. i did not see parham anywhere on the field. is dean ready? but they all look anxious to start hitting and get under those lights.
Trojan Man, couldn't have said it better myself. It's all about the boys!! Friday Night Lights, I was so proud to see both my boys in pads and both on Varisty. Can wait to see them play.
I know the best way for ME to make an informed decision of "WHO IS WHO IS THE SGV ZOO " is to go out & see the "BEST ". I am planning on going & seeing the South Hills Huskies practice .Then I will check out a few others & only then can I make an honest comparison. Bottom line ...it's all about the YOUNG MEN playing on Friday Nights . I hope all of them enjoy the moments ....THEY GO BY SO FAST !!!
FIGHT ON !!!
