West Covina vs. South Hills to be televised on FOX Sports ...

| | Comments (202) |

Although FOX is my future employer, no, I had nothing to do with this - West Covina vs. South Hills on November 2 will be the FOX Sports/Prime Ticket game of the week. How cool is that? The Valley gets a little love in the form of what could be the San Antonio League championship game. I think the game was originally scheduled for a Thursday, but the schools will move it to accommodate TV.

I agree LA has a really good athletic program and are competitive in many of their sports and have every right to be PROUD but don't go saying you are the best in all of them. Bragging doesn't wear to well. Especially when people can bring in statistics to prove otherwise.
I'm not hating on LA just sticking up for the other schools that also are proud of their accomplishments in athletics.

conq76' said:

LAHS stacks up with justabout anhyone in FB, but the comment that LA is "tops" in "all sports" is where the over-statement lies.

They have had competitive years in Baseball and Basketball but as far as I can recall, no CIF championships in either. Quality swimming and Water Polo, solid wrestling, and even some strong showings in tennis.

I would wish that LA would get some of their "tech students" to take on the project of really upgrading their website and get to postig all of their atheletic accomplishments with some detail. There would indeed be a lot to post!

Stating that any school is the best at every sport would definitely been "over-stating", however, LAHS certainly does stack up well, historically, with just about any school. And I include many of the storied schools outside of the SGV as well.

LAHS surely has had its share of success over the years!

I didn't appreciate him at the ime, but Despain set some very high levels of expectation and the traditions he established 40 years ago has resulted in a level of success that would be the envy of many schools.

Pro-Set

"This offense is based on a Pro Style system that employs simple run blocking schemes and easy timing route passing principles. From Freshmen to Varsity, regardless of school population, all levels of high school football can install this offense easily and execute it effectively. The running game makes use of "down hill" blocking and uses very little pulling and trapping among offensive linemen. The passing game uses routes that most any receiver can run with precision and provides the quarterback with simple reads that are not confusing. The ease of teaching the basic pass protections allows for greater deal of success when throwing the football. Plays and formations are related and interchangeable. The responsibility of each player remains virtually the same regardless of what play is called out of which formation. The beauty of using this offense is that it looks complex to anyone scouting it or playing against it but is fundamentally simple for those who use it."

Found on the net, and it definetly does not describe what LAHS did in the 70's.

conq76' said:

Despain had been working on his schemes for quite awhile, but it was not until Hertel and company came along, was he able to actually put them to proper use. Walsh built his offense around finding the right atheletes to fill the roles. Despain was blessed to have those atheletes show up.

Another accomplishment I like to point out about LAHS, is that they acheived their success with a decided lack of D1 talent. Until recently, when Cody and Harwell, stepped into the SC and UCLA defenses, people would be hard pressed to name a lot of other D1 players.

Hertel, (Rob), had some success at SC back in the 70's. Sproul played a few years at Arizona St. and was drafted into the pro's, (as was Hertel), neither of which went very far at that level. Randy Hertel set a bunch of passing mark's at Rice but never had a pro-career.

Smith opted for a BB scholarship at BYU and went on to play with the Celtics and now does radio for the Clippers, (last I heard).

I am sure there were a few others, linemen, what have you, but compared to some schools, Hart comes to mind, Despain did a lot with what he was given.

I worked at In/n/Out for a looong time and worked closely with some Edgewwod grads who had played ball with the Roenickes. It was surely a shame that that school went the way of the dinosaur. Today the W Covina team is called the Bulldogs, who dod they merge with to become the Bulldogs?

Conq76' said:

Best SGV team all time?

For what is's worth, Los Altos '73, I think it was, was ranked second nationwide, behind Faust's Moeller High in Cincinatti.

As to the great rivalries of the SGV in the 70's, don't forget the W. Covina Spartans. For several years, the old Sierra league came dowm to LA, WC or SH.

Joe Amat said:

cong'76 & alum,

No real peeing here. A lotta respect to the Los Altos teams of that era.

I remember the LA/Amat game in a packed MSAC stadium ('74 or '75?) that went OT and ended in a California Tiebreaker victory for the Lancers when a 4th down pass was caught at the Los Altos 49 to win by 1 yard. On an interesting note, and help me if I have the details slightly off, the game went OT after Amat was driving for a game-winning score and on a crucial play from the LA 5 yd line USC/NFL bound Paul McDonald lined up over the tackle instead of the center. (in his defense the tackle had just moved over from center due to an injury) The play resulted in LA recovering the fumble and forcing the California Tiebreaker.

I will back up '76's description of the offense as correct and LA's balanced attack was very "West-Coast-ish". Those QB's (Hertel, Sproul, Smith) were very good at it. Rumor had it that McDonald's dad was shopping for schools in '72 and chose Amat late due to their passing attack. When did DeSpain start to open things up?

Los Altos (as well as South Hills, Royal Oak, and to some extent Covina ) had some great squads back in those days and it seems as though there was more respect among all of those good valley teams during the mid '70s-early'80s. Even Amat/Edgewood was not the "hated-rivalry" that one would expect from private/public less than 1 mile apart (Freddy will attest to that) .

It seems the animosity back then was directed toward the so-called wannabe programs of the time like Workman, Northview or Sierra Vista who tried to pretend that they were good.

As long as your talking 1982.....

LA Conqs, led by 6'10" QB Mike Smith.

Throwing to:
6'5" TE Matt Stark (115 catches 1000+ yards).
6'4" WR Darren Davis (90+ Catches 1000+ yards).
6'0" WR Don White (70 catches 1000+ yards).

Smith, and Company broke most of Pat Hadens passing marks (4000+ yards total) that year, on the way to beating Esperanza for the CIF Championship.

I'm sure the Amat fans will pee on our parade, but just a thought for 1982 anyway......

"The young man who took the snaps last year had a big heart, but lets face it, he wasn't a Hertel, Sproul or Smith, (I go waaayyy back). The beauty of Despain and now Gano, has always been balance. Los Altos has been running a "West Coast" offense long before anyone ever heard of (RIP) Bill Walsh.

Gano will pull something out of his hat."

I see where the confusion might lie. By my placing "West Coast" in quotation marks, apparently it did not make it clear enough that I was refering to the concept of the scheme and not the literal reference. This is a literary approach, and I apologize to any who may have been confused by the reference.

So, can someone tell me what an offense based on many of the schemes and tactics that would later be dubbed the "West Coast Offense", (literal reference) would have been called in 1972?

conq76' said:

Let me make this as clear as possible.

Despain ran an offense that consisted of short, accurate passes, many underneath, to backs out of the backfield and to the tight end. He off-set this strategy with traps, draws and other misdirection plays. After a steady diet of such, after the defense had bunched up in an effort to stop the assault, he would then use play action and have his QB's throw down field to receivers who were left in single coverage and often those long passes would result in scores or long gains.

The pass routes were often delayed, crossing or otherwise depended on accurate timing. For high-school kids in the 70's it was extremely sophisticated.

Now perhaps you could tell me what an offense that depended upon such tactics as these, was called in 1972? Obviously it was not the "West Coast Offense", so, I guess you are correct, since there was no official WCO in 1972, it would be technically incorrect to call Despains a WCO. Maybe you could tell me what it was refered to 10 years before Walsh and the Niner's won their first Super Bowl?

Junior Barnes said:

When my daughter played bobbie sox something similar happened with the league president.Soon after being elected he shows up in a brand new mini van and then the stories started coming out that money was missing from the treasury. Read Steve Youngs comments about footwork at the bottom of the article and make sure that you click on the link that says "Launch" for an great and definitive graphic about the geneology of the West Coast offense. The Young comments were taken from an excerpt of an accompanying article by Young about the West Coast, found at

Adding Daylon MC to the coaching staff FUGGETABOUTIT, AWESOME!.......our Lancers are getting ready to do battle. As far as the politics go, that is at every school. My kid did not get a fair shake at another sport due to politicking but that in no way swayed us from leaving The Great Amat...He did turn out to be a good Football player tho. I'll be there Friday nites with all the support for all of our Lancers.

Correction,

your right it is McBrides loss. Coach McCutchen, Coach Taylor, Coach (not official)Minor, Coach (with QB Lenhart) Rix. This will help this seasons team tremendously. These coaches names speak for themselfs. As far as the hiring process of DMC ,the question is, was DMC forced on Verti or did Verti ask for DMC. My gut guess is with Verti's Big EGO and not wanting someone looking over his shoulder to replace him it had to be DMC was forced on him......hope it all works out and they put egoS aside and tune up a good season for the Amat Faithful.

Reguarding Verti:

Daylon is there to take his job. It will help to have him on the sidelines this year but in no way is Verti going to show a ex-NFL player how to coach a team. Bryce McBride never goes to Los Altos if this was announced before the season. DM is a total recruiting tool for Amat and if he becomes head coach the door swings back open to players coming to Amat. Maybe the Monsignor is listening...come on the football season is their bread and butter... bringing in DMC was genius, just wish it was done earlier. I cannot wait to hear his input if he is at the chalk talk. Varti does not expand at all in chalk talk and just goes over play by play...no insight or direction of what he is doing. DMC is a great hire...Just want to know at what capacity is his job?...RB coach? Def. Corrdinator? Assistant Head Coach...Very good news for a change over at Amat...Dont think it stops there either. DMC knows some coaches and ex-players out there that would be glad to work with the team this year. Big name hire and bigger crowds for games..perfect timing Carroll.

Do you actually believe that Daylon would come back because he believes in what was being accomplished???? Pleeeze...Daylon knows a whole lot more than Verti and that is why he is there. They need his insight, ideas, advise, leadership, vision, and experience at the ultimate level. Verti needs that help, and hopefully he will welcome and listen to the ideas Daylon brings to the program.

The popular term "West Coast Offense" as a general concept is more of a philosophy and an approach to the game than it is a set of plays or formations. Traditional offensive thinking argues that a team must establish their running game first, which will draw the defense in and open up vertical passing lanes downfield ( passing lanes that run perpendicular to the line of scrimmage ).

Bill Walsh's West Coast Offense, however, differs from traditional offense by instead emphasizing a short, horizontal passing attack to help stretch the defense out. The West Coast Offense as implemented under Walsh features precisely-run pass patterns by the receivers that make up about 65% to 80% of the offensive scheme. With the defense stretched out, the offense is then free to focus the remaining plays on longer throws ( 14+ yards ) and mid to long yard rushes

The majority of West Coast Offense routes occur within 15 yards of the line of scrimmage. 3-step and 5-step drops by the quarterback to take the place of the run and force the opposing defense to commit their focus solely on those intermediate routes. Contrary to popular belief, the offense also uses the 7 step drop for shallow crosses, deep ins and comebacks. The Michigan Wolverines utilize the 5 and 7 step drops about 85% of the time with West Coast pass schemes implemented by Quarterbacks Coach Scot Loeffler. If the WCO only utilized the 3 and 5 step pass game the offense would be ineffective with the speed today on the defensive side of the ball, the defense would be squatting and breaking hard on those short to intermediate throws with no fear of a downfield pass.

Once the defense is focusing on one area only, this will then open up running and passing lanes for the backs and receivers to exploit. In theory, this makes the offensive play calling unpredictable and keeps a defense's play "honest" because most down and distance situations can be attacked with the pass or run in Walsh's West Coast Offense

From Wikipedia....the verbage sounds vaguely familiar, to what I posted a few hours ago! LOL!

I couldn't help but to put my two cents in...

First of all, I have to admit that being a part of the "Amat Family" is a love/hate relationship.
Like all schools, as a parent you must hurdle the politics, and as an athlete you must hurdle the mind games the coaches play.

When DiFiori was coaching, I initially thought he was a jerk and was an idiot in terms of the calls that were made during the game. After he left and Verti was hired, I found out that DiFiori was allowing Verti to call the offensive plays. In turn, DiFiori took the heat for this and it eventually cost him his job as head coach. I'm not saying it was the only thing, but part of the reason.

DiFiori had an excellent relationship with visiting college recruiters. Once Verti signed on, this changed. Verti's ego is very big. He is also obviously young...too young to be a head coach and have the experience and knowledge needed to communicate, lead and LISTEN to input from others and wear the many hats that is necessary from a head coach.

Our family learned first hand how the recruiting process worked. The help came from the other coaches at Amat, not Verti. The assistant coaches will record a DVD specifically with highlights of that particular player so that the player can mail to colleges. Help also came from past players who had close ties to other colleges and universities. There is alot of networking between coaches. If your son is not a "DIV. I" player or over 5'10", they are looked over the majority of the time. The head coach at Amat determines what player will be the "spotlight" player for the media and colleges. It's all to promote the school. If the player is not of the Division I level (according to Amat standards), it is his and his family's responsibility to get to the next level. Skill players will receive letters from many colleges and universities, but ultimately, these letters are to get the players interest in attending that school, not because
of their playing ability.

After saying this, I must mention that the "LOVE" side of being a part of the Amat family. It includes meeting a great group of parents. The Amat staff is "stuffy" at times, to say the least, but I must tip my hat to the mothers and fathers of the football players (past and present)...they are an integral part of the football program and our family enjoyed our time together witnessing "our boys" playing under the Friday Night Lights, waiting outside the locker room for each player (skilled or not)to walk out into the massive group of supporters, and the infamous tailgate parties that continue well into the night. It doesn't get any better that.

Despain was operating a clinic for other high -school coaches explaining his passing schemes, strategies and tactics. After it had concluded, one coach approached him and said his kids could never grasp the intricacies of what he, Despain, was teaching. Despains simple response was, "Well, mine can."

Los Altos ran throughout the seventies, an extremely well balanced offensive scheme that utilized short, accurate passes, men in motion, play-action passes and quick draws. All of this set-up the defense and when they had all but forgotten about the long pass, one would be uncorked and would result in a quick score on many occasions. His use of the tight-end both as a quick slant target and as a pulling blocker further drew defenses in making the sudden long ball even more effective.

He did all of this from a pro-set formation and if you were to look, you would see that the trademark success of Los Altos was based on a commitment to balance, of developing every facet of the offense so that no single weakness could be focused on.

Despain had the atheletes and the creative ability to use them in what were, at the the time, very sophisticated methods for high school kids.

It may not have been the exact replica of what Walsh introduced, but it was based on many of the same principles.

You miss the whole point dufus. Sure lot of reporters get news off news wires etc. but Jim Rome you tell me what as he done as far as earn his stripes as a journalist?..he feeds off others stories. He is all smoke and mirrors. 90% of his takes are spun off someone elses story. Can Jim not come up with his own news for a change. What is liked about him are his quick one liners like Epic! fishwrap! i'm out now! rack him! errrrrrrr! show me your lightning bolt! thats all good for the comedy part of it but the bottom line is Jim has not really done much journalism. He hangs on the coatails of others...but hey whatever works, he came up with the idea and has made a good living off it so I do give him that credit. He is just not much of a reporter thats all.

Conq76' said:

The young man who took the snaps last year had a big heart, but lets face it, he wasn't a Hertel, Sproul or Smith, (I go waaayyy back). The beauty of Despain and now Gano, has always been balance. Los Altos has been running a "West Coast" offense long before anyone ever heard of (RIP) Bill Walsh.

Gano will pull something out of his hat.

Anonymous said:

So Howard let me get this right, if you gather information from newspapers, wire sources, or other sources of material to do a show that doesn't count? you'd have to be at each game and every game first hand to get the story or comment on it. Huh?
If you use your analogy there goes FUK he exploits the wire services everynight because someone else has written the story for the AP or Brietbart from which he gets his stories from and just reads them off the prompter.
Howard even in this altered state, you still make no sense.

Conqybine said:

Conq.76,

I think the LA defense will win some games for them this year. The O will sputter if those QB's cannot get the job done. With that O-line they just might have the time to throw the ball. You are right that is why we play the games. Gano will know by game 2 where he needs to adjust to win. Good smart coaches know all this...Rosemead is a good game to start with, not a heavy hitter like So. Hills or CO.

Howard Cossell said:

Big Differance between doing you journalism as the Vin Scully's and the Rob Fuk's of the world but openly saying you read different news papers (as he put it FISHWRAPS)and then come on the air to discuss the topics, what is jim doing but exploiting someone elses journalism. He has come a long way since his earliest days doing a show while in in Santa Barbara (and, believe it or not, was a favorite among the athletic staff at that time). He also was a pretty good tennis player on the Junior Circuit back in the day out of Calabasas HS

What is the Big Deal about So Hills this year?..they get one alleged Star from Bishop Amat and they have them on TV???.....Heck they could well possibly start their season off 0-2..Trabuco Hills is no slouch and La Habra has So Hills number plus La Habra is at home for that game, also the rest of So. Hills schedule, all teams have 5 losses or more the previous year with exception of Rowland, and we all know Rowland this year is not the Rowland of last year. Someone had them in a So Cal vs No Cal bowl game?...I cannot see how they would qualify with that schedule. Walnut and Nogales on their schedule...Very Weak.....I would not punch their ticket to the Bowl game or a CIF championship just yet.

Congratulations with the new job Aram, you work hard and deserve it. You've been extremely valuable to the Trib.
I don't understand, however, how the Trib let go of a Brian Baiotto, a man who was just as valuable to the prep sports coverage as anyone else. He did a great job covering wrestling this year and had some outstanding human interest pieces. Everyone knows how much effort he gave to the company. With you and him gone, there are going to be some really big shoes to fill.

Call me old fashioned and I'm glad in my family we hold to this day that hard work will eventually pay off.

Well said! After all how do you defend one persons opinion, if not your own?

Although, some agree on this site, as do some don't... it's still the best HS sports grey-space in town.

Regarding the Fox/Sports airing of the West Covina and So. Hills game....I think it's the best DAM thing that could have happened to all of us in SGV....regardless of who plays, wins or loses. Of course, like all large families someone is always bound to be a little jealous.....spoiled kids.

It's high school football! Kids do their best. Win, lose, draw. High school! I so hope that sometime this season L A faces West Co. Don't care if it's your house. I want to be there when it's all on the line. You WILL know then. Till' then, get a life.

check maxpreps and that will show you a complete list of every team's schedule in the southern section.
from what i saw our game south hills vs. west covina may be on an off week compared to the other bigger southern sections schools. some of our other local matchups different weeks just dont compare with some of the other bigger matchups those weeks. sorry!
i think the only other time our valley was on foxsports was years ago when los altos and charter oak played each other. congratulations to our boys on representing the valley. fox won't cancel the game if west covina is below .500 by the time that game is going to be on tv will they? check their schedule!

Hey A.T.

I think this is basically your last day to be the “Big Papi” here in this little jungle you have built. So I figure this was relevant because the blog truly was your baby.

Hit it Frank…………..

It's quarter to three, there's no one in the place
Except you and me
So set 'em' up Joe, I got a little story
I think you should know
We're drinking my friend, to the end
Of a brief episode
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

I know the routine, put another nickel
In the machine
I feel kind of bad, can't you make the music
Easy and sad
I could tell you a lot, but it's not
In a gentleman's code
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

You'd never know it, but buddy I'm a kind of poet
And I've got a lot of things I'd like to say
And if I'm gloomy, please listen to me
Till it's talked away

Well that's how it goes,
and Joe I know your gettin'
Anxious to close
Thanks for the cheer
I hope you didn't mind
My bending your ear
But this torch that I found, It's gotta be drowned
Or it's gonna explode
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

Late Buddy and Again thanks!

Aram,

You need to make calls to Fox Sports for their HS Spotlight show and get them on board for televising some of the big games this year like LA vs SH or LA vs CO. No better way to build credibility for a state bid then that.

Posted by: LUVTHISGAME at June 12, 2007 11:55 AM

At least they got it half right :), but its a start. Way to go SGV!!!!!

Aram said:

Conq Alum,

No, I don't have a link, but the portion of the LA Times article listing the games should tell you what to expect. It doesn't say anything about Week 0.

From what I hear, CIF actually gives FOX a list of suggested games to do from week to week ... match-ups they feel will be very meaningful games. Obviously, they do this before the season. OK, now follow along, one higher-up from CIF told me he reads this blog, and you all know that I think of South Hills this season ... put everything together and maybe they bought the South Hills hype and said "We have to suggest a South Hills game at some point this season." I know this sounds way out there, but you never know.

Conq Alum said:

Aram,

I heard that FOX Sports/Prime Ticket was going to air the week 0 game (Friday, 8-31) of Dominguez vs. Centennial (Corona).?.?

Do you have a link at FSN with the high school tv listings?

congrats...

This is from Eric Sondheimer's article in the LA Times ...

The Southern Section has sent out letters to individual schools notifying them that their games have been selected to be televised by FSN Prime Ticket this season, and leading off the schedule is the Sept. 7 game between Redlands East Valley and Riverside North.

Also scheduled to appear is Corona Centennial, which will have its Sept. 14 game against Encino Crespi televised. And on Oct. 26, Vista Murrieta and Temecula Chaparral will be televised.

The Inland Empire is expected to have one of its strongest group of football teams in years.

Other games selected for broadcast include Ventura St. Bonaventure vs. Westlake Village Oaks Christian on Sept. 21, Los Alamitos vs. Orange Lutheran on Sept. 28, Anaheim Servite vs. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on Oct. 5, Newhall Hart vs. Canyon Country Canyon on Oct. 12, West Covina South Hills vs. West Covina on Nov. 2 and Santa Ana Mater Dei vs. Servite on Nov. 9.

Aram said:

Oh, I wasn't reporting this because of anything I got from FOX. I haven't started there yet and I'm not even with the TV side. I got this info from Coach Bogan, who called to say adios today. Then, I went to the LA Times story. I'll post the sked in a second.
