Who will win our High School Heisman?

| | Comments (80) |

The race for the San Gabriel Valley Tribune player of the year award begins this week with several hopefuls in action. Covina High quarterback Mike McDonough graduated after earning back-to-back player of the year awards. In no particular order, these are some of the top pre-season candidates for 2007.

RECEIVERS
Dorian Wells, South Hills - The best playmaker in the SGV? Will he go crazy going from Bishop Amat to South Hills? You have to like the position he's in, and his stats should be among the best in the valley at his position. I know he's a receiver, but if the Huskies go all the way, then he deserves a close look.
Mikey Harrell, Charter Oak - With Michael Johnson gone, look for Harrell to have a huge year as Chris Allen's No. 1 target. The Chargers offense should be a nice blend of running and passing, which will affect his stats. But as far as pure talent, you can't go wrong with this guy.

RUNNING BACKS
Bryce Mahmud-McBride, Los Altos - That's right, his official last name is now Mahmud-McBride. With Los Altos' quarterback situation up in the air, Mahmud-McBride could be asked to carry the Conquerors and has all the tools necessary to do so. He's got speed, he's tough, his body is rock solid and a great offensive line to work with. Seriously, I don't know what's stopping this guy from a possible 2,000 yard season.

Chris Harris, Duarte - The SGV's leading rusher with over 2,100 yards is back. And look at what he did in last year's playoffs, rushing for 241 yards against La Canada, and had another game where he rushed for 166 yards against a powerful Glendora defense. The Falcons are heavy favorites to win the Montview League for a second straight year, and figure to be one of the top four teams in the Mid Valley Division.

Nico Barbone, San Dimas - Oh, this could be a special year for the Saints junior. What I keep hearing most about Barbone is his tremendous work ethic and desire to get better. He had a sophomore season in which he rushed for 1,330 yards with 12 TDs. If the Saints go on to win the Valle Vista with Barbone leading the charge, he would have to be considered. Of course to win it, the Saints need to pull off a few surprises in the Northwest Division.

Tim Gilmore, Wilson - There's a feeling among some I've talked to that on pure talent, Gilmore is special. He's a run and catch threat on an offense returning a lot of weapons. Of course, he'll be judged on how his team does. If the Wildcats can somehow find their way into the Miramonte League race, and earn a playoff berth, then Gilmore will get a closer look.

QUARTERBACKS
Chris Allen, Charter Oak - An imposing figure for a junior. Sort of a JaMarcus Russell type according to coach Lou Farrar. Look, he went 9-1 as a starter and led the Chargers all the way to the Southwest Divisional finals. There won't be anyone returning with more confidence, and he has the receivers in place to have a huge season.

Danny Pertusati, Damien - The Spartans lose a great quarterback in Mike Mendrum, but watch Pertusati pick up where he left off, and even add a tad more with his quick footwork. I watched this guy in practice this week, and not only was impressed with his arm, composure, but his ability to scramble out of trouble and make plays. He sort of reminded me of a McDonough type, but this is his first-year starting at QB as a senior, so we'll see what happens. But a sleeper for sure.

Austin Goldsmith, Duarte - The Falcons QB threw for over 2,000 yards and 20-plus touchdowns as a junior, and against the type of opponents on the Falcons' schedule, his stats should be off the charts again. With Harris as his counterpart in the backfield, Goldsmith should have no problem finding open receivers. Like Harris, for Goldsmith to be considered, they Falcons must make a serious run at a CIF title.

Other QB's in the running....
Brian Partida, Arroyo
Brandon Parham, South Hills
Jose Garay, South El Monte
Oscar Robles, Northview
Drew Kaluzny, Glendora

Austin Goldsmith as a junior had over 2000 yds and over 20 touchdowns. Danny Pertusati has never started a game. Austin has 41 votes and Danny has 707. Bryce has 300 votes since noon yesterday. Polldaddy.com needs to be replaced with a better accountable system. This doesnt seem fair to any of the kids. What are we teaching here?

To all concerned about the anonymous posts, I've talked with people here, and have thought a lot about this myself and feel that if someone wants to leave an anonymous comment without a preferred sign-name, we'll allow it as long as the comment isn't too harsh. The SGVN has 10-15 different blogs throughout our newspaper group, and all of them follow the same guidelines. The choice I have is to either release comments individually after I've read them, or allow you to comment instantly and monitor them as much as possible. Let's not make this a huge deal. I wish everyone would use a sign-name, but this isn't a perfect world, or the perfect blog. Thanks.

Dan,

Thats what I have been saying also and fully agree with you, I have never seen a blog or forum that didnt require you to sign in and post under just one screen name per IP address until now.

It makes it hard to follow and I believe the creator of the blog preferred it that way to stir the pot, trash talking and answering yourself is much easier when you can post under multiples names.

Please fix it Freddie, you have the power and its a simple thing to do through a capable server.

Joe Colt.

Dan said:

Sorry I forgot to write my name on that last post, pretty ironic. lol.

Anonymous said:

Seems like this blog needs to have one user name per person or per e-mail address Fred, it might help bring a little accountability to some of these posters,
Its obvious some of these posters are posting under different screen names, about their favorite player, or making several anonymous post
for the same player.
Can't this blog tie down one user name & e-maill address combination to a specific computer like other blogs & message boards do? That might help eliminate a lot of this anonymous posting that goes on.

Dorian Wells is overated.

Bryce Muhamud will get banged up and not finish the season.

Pertusati is good but Damien Lineman will get him killed. he will have to be on his bike this year.

It is Nico Barbone that is the guy that will tear it up this year. the 12 TD he had last year will increase to 24 or better. Nico is the Man and to think he is Junior and will be back next year. He is another one that will be BK to BK Tribune Player of the Year mark my words this kid is for real. As for Gladstone shutting Nico down...Too Funny. He will go for over 100 yards and score 3 td's in the opener tomorrow. Watch and see this very conditioned Athlete single handedly kick your as-e-

Harris gets my vote said:

Fred,

I would have to say Chris Harris from Duarte would get my vote. However, your discription states that Harris ran for 166 yards against a strong Glendora defense. I recall most of those yards were obtained against Glendora's second string defense. Glendora's 1st string defense was pulled during the 3rd qtr. The score was so lopsided early on 40 something to 7 Glendora's favor.

Joe Amat said:

Pre-season rankings are more than understood by those in lancerland whether it is teams or individuals. Most are made regarding proven returners. While the reason could be worthy of discussion and the decision debateable Wagner did not play much at runningback until late in the season. For that reason, we may *speculate* that he could step up and have a big season, there is certainly no reason for anyone to print him as a favorite.

Much to all of the lancer-haters dismay, no one has come on and complained about the potential middle-of-the top ten ranking. Sorry.

Anti - Amat said:

Fred smart move not putting a Bishop Amat Player up there. You know Amat owns the blog with its bloggers and they would put their guy way over the Top with casting one sided votes for their player weather he was worth of the vote or not. Sort of like what Damien is doing....I do see where a Amat gut voted for Barbone but that is only because Wagner was not there..

Transplants said:

Who will be the best tranfers to make a impact at their transferred school.

Blake Tillis Los Altos

Junior Tamayo Los Altos

Ruben Ortiz Los Altos

Bryce Muhamud Los Altos

Dorian Wells So. Hills

Bradford Ray So. Hills

Where are all the Northview Studs???? I only see Robles on your possible list.

Colts4Life said:

I agree Colt Fan .. there are too many great lineman at Covina, Although, Barbone will try to be the "aaron harris"(from B.P.) from last year. I think Barbone has a great chance, but he can't do it all by himself. And BTW, San Dimas Will lose to Covina !

Huskie "Woof Woof" said:

I would rate Damon Kuklinski higher on this list then our own Dorian Wells. Damon means and will contribute in more area then Wells. Just because Wells came from Amat does not mean he is our savior or leader. Damon is the leader and the Man on this years Huskies team...Can I get "WOOF WOOF"

Colt Fan said:

Speaking of linemen, theres a few at Covina. Daniels, Shorts, Vess and Arrant are real studs. Keep a close eye on them.

What about Johnny Crespo?...He is at C.O.? DID HE GET HURT?

Jhykron said:

"How do you pronounce Mahmud?"

Muh-MOOD

It's an arabic name, similar to Mohammed. It means "praiseworthy".

Jhykron said:

"What would Aguilar stats have been if he did not have that big TE (Cody)to throw the ball to"

Probably pretty damn impressive. Aguilar did the majority of his damage that year throwing to Ramon Martinez.

Cody's biggest contribution to the offense was in the finals when they put him at fullback and used him to break Charter Oak's stifling run D.

Chris Rome said:

Speaking of linemen. Wheres the top ten? Sorry I had to go there.

SGFBFAN said:

Hey what happened to Johnny Crespo?

Joe Amat said:

I think that the point earlier was valid.

Heisman winners do not always project to great NFL players. HS MVPs do not always translate into great players in the future.
Where do Andre Ware, Ty Detmer, Gino Torretta, Charlie Ward , Danny Wuerffel , Ron Dayne, Chris Weinke, Eric Crouch, and Jason White rank on your list of great football players?

While Cody got the NFL career, Aguilar did use football to get a great education and at the same time had an opportunity to play 4 years of college football, which IS the ultimate goal...isn't it?

LA CONQ said:

WHY DOES THE HEISMAN HAVE TO BE MOSTLY OFFENSIVE SKILLED POSITIONS.

I THINK WE SHOULD RECONSIDER.

There Should be a Heisman for DEFENSE OR OLINE!

OR at least Consider them when you guys are voting.

wanna say it right said:

How do you pronounce Mahmud?

sgvpride said:

Thank you freddie

Tim gilmore needs sum love.

Conqybine said:

What would Aguilar stats have been if he did not have that big TE (Cody)to throw the ball to. Cody was that team. Where is Aguilar now?...but your right where is MCD now?..I guess Aguilar made LA click more then Cody did that year? That is debateable.

sramirez said:

I will stand by my pick in 2000. Just like Fred said, the Player of the Year is not always about which player has the most potential to succeed at the next level. There's no question what Shaun Cody's potential was even back then. You knew USC would just be another step to the NFL. And he had a great senior year. I just felt Felipe Aguilar had a better season. It had nothing to do with his ancestry. Aguilar threw for over 3,740 yards, which at the time was the second-most ever in the Valley, only bested by former Los Altos quarterback Mike Smith and his 42 TD passes tied Pat Haden's long-standing mark.
Both players were worthy of the pick, but these are tough decisions a prep editor must make.

FredJ said:

Can't put everyone in, but this is a good discussion board for the players you think we should consider.

LA CONQ said:

My vote is for Ray Rodriguez. WHY DON'T you put him in the voting>

FRED YOU HAVEN'T visited LA to SEE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY'S TRUE HEISMAN

BIG BLUE,

BY THE WAY SHAUN CODY is IRISH/MEXICAN

SO I DON'T THINK YOUR PRO HISPANIC thing is working.

footbalfan said:

these are all great suggestions!!

but wat about L.A.'s number 84!

his name is Ray Rodriguez

from wat i hear he is getting heavily recruited
thats who i think should be up there

Anonymous said:

So far Bryce is racking up the votes but I am not so sure he is going to get that many yards based on a team without a QB and passing game...you need to have a good passing game to open up your running game and visa versa. Maybe they will install a short passing game, but LA better find one or Bryce is going to get keyed on and or banged up.....He sure does look good on paper and stature body wise. Maybe LA should go to the wing T and take the thought of passing the ball out of the equation somewhat..

FredJ said:

SGV fan, the player of the year doesn't go to the player we think might have the most impact on the next level, or the one who has the best chance of reaching the NFL. Look at Heisman trophy winners, they're rarely a first round pick, and sometimes don't make the NFL. This award goes to the player who has a great high school season, and who has the biggest impact on his team with everything considered, like strength of schedule, how far they go in league, playoffs, and so forth.

Big Blue said:

Picking Aguilar over Cody was a mistake but Ramirez was pro-hispanic back then. that swayed his vote.

Chris Rome said:

Fred..How accurate is this poll when people can vote as many times as they want? Did someone from Florida sale you this?

FredJ said:

The player of the year could be any position. I still argue with Steve Ramirez over his 2000 selection, when he picked Los Altos quarterback Felipe Aguilar over teammate Shaun Cody.

sgvfan said:

Fred will you be keeping a watch on some of the top prospects in the SGV area. For example, John Rabe of Damien and Dominique Austin of Bishop Amat have been listed in the top ten of DE's on Scout.com California 2008 Preseason Rankings. I know there are other prospects in the area like South Hills DT Kebin Umodo and WR Dorian Wells. Are all the players on your HS Heisman list headed to the next level?

Big Blue said:

Altho not a skilled position player, but Bishop Amats Dominique Austin is going to have a monster season on both sides of the ball. Is the Tribune Heisman ruling out O and D lineman?...

Joe Colt said:

My vote went to Nico Barbone, I believe he will rack up some serious running yards this year and take his team deep into CIF.

Wells is a great player but I dont think he will get enough passes thrown to him, SH has alot of politics so expect the ball to be distributed around and balanced stats.

The guys from Duarte are outstanding players but with a weak strength of schedule most guys would put up outrageous stats also.

Just my opinion, we shall see.

Joe Colt

I want to vote for the QB's in the running.
Write in vote for QB Oscar Robles

FredJ said:

Everyone will get a good look. This is just a place to start.

MATMTWTBAG said:

I guess someone forgot about our running back over at Amat Marcus Wagner. I think he also deserves a look. I guess no write in votes in this poll and if I choose from the list my vote would go to Nico Barbone.
