With all talent being equal, who would you want?
Don't care which schools you think recruit or not, I want to know who you think is the best X's and O's guy. The best motivator. The one you want in crunch time when championships are on the line. The one who gets the most out of his talent. The East San Gabriel Valley is filled with a deep talent pool of coaches, so without trying to list them in any particular order, these are who I'd consider the Tribune's Top Ten with all the aforementioned considered.

Steve Bogan (South Hills) - Always in the hunt, and he's from Edgewood. How can you go wrong?
Darryl Thomas (Covina) - Three CIF semifinal appearances since 2000.
Greg Gano (Los Altos) - Followed DeSpain and created own legendary status.
Lou Farrar (Charter Oak) - He's "Old School" and "Old School" works.
Mike Maggiore (West Covina) - Giving it up to another Edgewood alum who also owns a CIF title.
Eric Podley (Bonita) - Nobody underestimates his coaching ability.
Mark Pasquarella (Glendora) - Look where Glendora was before his arrival.
Terry Roche (Chino Hills) - Worked magic at Diamond Bar, doing same with Huskies.
Mark Verti (Bishop Amat) - Toughest job in SGV.
Jim Singiser (Arroyo) - Won or shared four of last five Mission Valley League titles.

Every single once in a very while I discover some thing really worth reading through when I'm surfing the web. Bravo?- thanks for creating actual content here?-
Vitamin D behaves so inside the body that it's classified like a hormone. It's in an important task the mineral homeostasis that are responsible for the unsafe effects of the gene expression as well as those of cellular differentiation. Vitamin D is the only known substance which energizes the process of absorption of calcium and also the phosphorus present in food to the small intestine, particularly in the jejunum region, as well as increases the kidney’s capacity in the re-absorption of calcium and phosphorus, which makes it necessary to maintain the power of these minerals along the way of blood and bone mineralization.
Coach Bogan? Give me a break! Not impressed one bit with the man.
After seeing the pounding that Bonita gave Covina, I would definitely have to go with Podley on this one.
When you've got a guy that has figured it out and is getting it done (like Thomas) you've got to find a way to keep him. Props to Covina for doing so.
from the mid '80s to the mid '90s amat won ELEVEN straight league titles and let TWO coaches (Paredes and Salter walk).
That set the precedent for the future in several sports when we lost very good coaches like Martinez, Lokar, Kendrena, DiFiori, etc.
Schools have got to work to keep coaches like that
Unforgivable
I think many people dont give Coach Thomas enough credit. Talent is everything. When you dont have playmakers, its really hard to establish your football team. But, in Coach Thomas' 15 years at Covina, he has had some wild times(inlcuding being a coach for 6 league titles, 93-94-95-97-2005-2006) I think Thomas learned a lot from his mentor, former Covina coach Dick Sheehan(1990-1996) Not to mention that memorable 1995 season when the Colts went 14-0 and won their "three-peat" league title. If you ask me, Thomas has much more to offer than what his resume states....GO COLTS!
You forgot to mention the San Gabriel Valley expert!!!!!! James Escarcega
Pasquarella and Podley would have to be the top game-planning coaches around. They have competed everywhere they've been, usually with lesser talent. Podley spends more time watching film than any coach. And when teams want to change defenses in the off-season, they go see Ray Medina, Podley's long-time defensive coordinator. Pasquarella won a lot of games at Covina, Ayala, Damien, and now Glendora. Not exactly football powerhouses, but he managed to get those programs near the top of their respective leagues. Farrar, Gano, and Bogan are all good and have benefitted from some talented athletes and great coaching staffs. It's a tribute to them that they recognize how to utilize their athletes. If you are asking to game-plan, motivate, and make game-time decisions, I'll go with Podley or Pasquarella.
don't tell Gano that rule about recruiting. he may get a time-out.
ALL on this list except ONE , should not be recruiting .
Any weekend updates . I live in Glendora & have seen a few of the players .....watch out These guys are looking TOUGH !!!
This is a list of great coaches in our area. They have all accomplished great things. Some more than others. One word that is not attached to everyone on this list "recruiting". That would narrow this list down some. Some coaches win or don't because they do it the way it was intended, by coaching. To those we should praise.

I would agree with you! Coach Lou has been an "Icon" in this valley for quite sometime.
With Lou, winning is very important to him. But I would bet that the development of the individual is just as important or more!
He has deciated his life to all the Royal Oak (where it started) and Charter Oak kids for a long time. I can remember the days of playing for coach Lou and now look back and respect everything he has done for all the kids he has touched.
I don't care where you play now or who's better, because when its all said and done, were you taught the game of football and life? Do you have good memories of your playing days? Are you better for having gone through his program? Do you now realize why he was on butt if you ditched school? Is he now still your friend?
To me, HS coaches have to be teachers first and not just in the sport they coach, coaches second and someone who you want representing the community in a postitive way!
I am sure alot of these coaches are real men in there own way, and I take my hat off to all of them. Our kids will be better for your help! Sure some are not on the list, but everyone could be!
Thanks again Big Lou... I truly respect you and the job you have done over the years! Also, a big thanks goes to his wife, who has been there every step of the way!

"Giambi revealed to Senator George Mitchell that he and his brother were introduced to steroids through his personal trainer Tim Schneider from Bulldog Gym in Glendora in the summer of 93."
Is this in writing somewhere? Eveyone knows Bulldog is a dirty place and steroids are run through that place.
Anonymous - I'm not slamming anyone....that game was a game that Glendora should have won....do you disagree. The Capo Valley game this past season was out of timeouts in the 4th quarter and there is absolutley no excuse for that at any level. Perhaps it was a one time thing but it took away any chance of putting a drive together instead of the hail mary. I'm saying (suggesting) to have someone on your staff dedicated to these details and keep the HC informed. You can wtf me all you want about not looking forward but I just don't want to see the same "mental" errors on and off the field repeated. This team has the potential to get over the hump but only if there is overall improvement. This group can be special.

La Verne,
As i said, The Pod is all football, I'll repeat, the Pod eats a slew of bacon each day just because it's PIGSKIN baby...Go to the T Tavern in La Verne and the guy runs the place.
Mike The Clone,
I don't always read the posts you make all that close because I know they tend to be Glendora related which I read about but not as religious as you, so to be fair, you are there a lot more than me...I know Pasqy and his skills...You clarified your thoughts on him and they were favorable, but your thoughts and concerns were with the assts. which is fair to say...I would rather be associated with a school that expects too much, rather than a school that expects or is happy with less. I wish the Bagpipers luck and they get over the hump in all sports...Any word on baseball over there?
Fred to answer the questions... My pick would be Coach Lou Farrar. He is the most senior member of the house with 22 years at the top of 1 program and many others at Royal Oak. That brings consistency (204 wins 3 CIF Titles out of 5 finals, Always deep into playoffs with numerous league titles.
1. X's and O's well nothing is new and only re-invents itself. Don't think there is much Farrar has not seen before. What is new to some he saw the first time around.....
2. Surrounds himself with a great staff is a very true statement. I would bet Coach Farrah had a hand in teaching and developing his staff over the years as he does his players.
3. Motivation... I don't think it is the 2 min. pre game I would hang my hat on as far as a coach but rather the way he carries himself. His time, dedication, work ethic and commitment to standards is the motivation. He walks the walk and demands that from all who play for him or coach with him.
Fred if your definition of “Old School” is holding those involved to a standard including his own staff you would be correct. If it is working with Kids to provide them with the opportunity to be successful on the field which will translate to being good citizens when they enter the adult world you would be correct again. If you define it as being a teacher and mentor who cares for his players you would be right again. If you define it as the screaming head who grabs you by the face mask while providing motivation so to speak you missed the mark and that would not be a correct definition of “Old School”.
Don’t be fooled by the "Senoir Member" comment. It is August once again and he will roll up his sleeves and go back to work like every other season with a fire and passion for the game, his players, and staff. “You Bet” Big Lou will be ready for football.
I think the Glendora poster who made a comment after last years finals hit the nail on the head. His comment was that even during a game that did not go Farrar' way he handled himself with "Class" which is what he demands from all who play or work for him. Once again a Standard is set.
Glendora Tease,
That was awesome and fires me up!

Breaking news! Just heard that Jason Giambi and his brother Jeremy are giving special vitamins and supplements out at South Hills practice. Giambi revealed to Senator George Mitchell that he and his brother were introduced to steroids through his personal trainer Tim Schneider from Bulldog Gym in Glendora in the summer of 93. Kamron King of Kings gym of Glendora would know he used to train people there. Isn't that in Big Lou's back yard. Go Chargers!
a little glendora tease ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q6PK4L1edU
Let's play, Come on! Look at it this way. Glendoras' defence played its ass off. Maybe if Glendoras starting fullback hadn't flaked out and quit the team, the defence would not of had to be on the field as much. If Glendora had a bench coach?? wtf (do you have a resume?)lol. There are a lot of componates to winning and losing football. Play calling, preperation,injuries.... Why dont WE look forward instead of what happened two years ago. Your whole post is whats called a left handed complimate. While you start and finish with something nice to say your intent is to slam someone. Losing to the eventual CIF Champs that year was hard for a lot of people, but for Glendora it was a great season and they are growing and getting stronger. Why dont you go tell Pasqy all his troubles would be over, if, all he needs is a bench coach..
How can you include the rudest man alive? Coach Roach? What a jerk hope he fails and hope his team does too. whatta creep
Pasqy is a very good coach. To get to the next level he needs to improve on game situation decisions. Case in point, two years ago in the first round of the playoffs they had Hart on the ropes with less than two minutes left and went to the nickel....the Hart QB as you recall picked them apart because he had all day to find a reciever. A blitz or two to bring pressure and the Tartans would have beaten the eventual finalists. Timeout decisions are often questionable. He has alot on his plate....a "bench" coach would help.
I don't know how you can't go with Eric Podley on this one. This guy and his awesome staff come out year in and year out as the underdog in the topnotch Miramonte League. His players are often undersized and flat out overmatched, but his spread offense and 3-5 defense seem to drive people nuts all the time. Sure he's had some pretty good quarterbacks, but he's molded these guys into great quarterbacks. I don't think there's a coach out there that can outmatch him X's and O's.
MOURNING A TEAMMATE: Teammates of Kenny Wilson console each other as they leave Beckman High School in Irvine Friday afternoon. Wilson, 16, died at the hospital after collapsing during practice.
TO THE FAMILY OF KENNY WILSON
I would like to express my deepest sympathy of the passing of your son. So sad to see a young man playing a sport he's enjoying and then losing his life!
I cannot even image what your family is going through. God Bless you all!

Rockne,
Just want to clear some things up so people don’t get the impression that I was the one throwing “personal” information out there about Coach’s and kids. I’m sure you weren’t intending on referring to me but it sure sounded like you were. I know what you’re referring to and I believe it was the CO baseball situation.
As far as Mark Pasquarella I don’t know how many times I must say it. I like the guy; my differences come from the philosophy on the field. Mark needs to surround himself with good people. He has Strycula so the basis is already there. But when I see coaches upstairs, during a game chatting with the crowd something is wrong. Not until “Pasqy” gathers himself with quality people will the program move forward. The “league is tough” is just an excuse and excuses are for guys that finish last. Hard work makes you a winner and the kids at Glendora work hard. They just need a staff to join the nucleus of “Pasqy” and “Stryc” and turn it up a notch and lets finish first and get to the second round at least. But at Glendora people seem to be satisfied with a second or third finish and a one done and time to go home. I don’t except that to me that’s like selling the kid’s short. I’ll say it again with the foundation of “Pasqy” and Strycula this program can move forward instead of the “rut” they are in now.
The “beating a dead horse” comment is non-sense. As in life you set yourself a set of goals to attain and you strive to reach those goals. But at “Bagpiper U” year after year there is no improvement…don’t ya think something’s wrong? Hell if I did that in my business I’d be finished, history, tanked, Ka-put!
When I was coaching at the end of every year I was dragged in to the administration office for a review of the season and to set goals for the following year. I always remember my administrator pulling that file out of the goals we had set the year before. I was expected to make improvements each year. If I didn’t I knew I was gone. And yes we had parents riding our asses, but we sucked it up and knew it came with the territory. Where this attitude came from that you can say a thing is utter crap.
If you follow your own moniker “Rockne” I think you know where I’m coming from. So come on Coach “Rockne” you were a winner, I have a feeling you must feel my pain.
Oh and here I'll use a Rockne qoute for you!
"Show me a good and gracious loser and I'll show you a failure."

Mike The Clone is not given a gag, but rather than beat a dead horse over and over and over, we don't need to hear about Glendora coaches and how bad they suck and how they don't know what they're doing. I am not a tartan lover or hater, but mentioning personal info about kids or coaches is not ok...I understand frustrations and the high expectations of that school, but it's not the same kids walking those halls on a consistant basis anymore and that league is tough. Believe me, you got a great football coach in Pasqy...be glad you got him. He's legit, a little cocky, but legit. Making rude comments without merit is what most of us are saying. It was a joke last year with Aram. You just knew he didn't play the game or he would understand how it's not about "hits".

los altos has a pretty good coaching staff alot of them have played at los altos one of the better coaches is coach fair he knows how to prepare for a game
I know Co has some of the best coaches, the team is only as good as the coaches. All the coaches at CO have a relationship on and off the field with the players. If anyone ever needs a big brother I suggest you contact CO coaches, they are all terrific, and very respectful..
I agree with Joe Blow. Its good to have monikers to respond too.
Sorry, I forgot to sign my last post. OOPS
To all the 'Anonymouses'... Your opinion good or bad is not what me and the others object too. When you blogg without a moniker its the ultimate disrispect(sp?).Your post appears one sided and not open for debate and everyone else is just stupid. How nice for you, when I called you out you could say, Who is c.i.a.? Use a moniker and dont appear cowardly. Use this name if it helps.. You are now 'C.I.A. Hater' be somebody, not a nobody. After all it is about the boys..
Well I guess mike the clone must be put under gag order because as much as we love him or hate him mike can’t be brutally honest anymore according to some of you about the team he loves. So are you guys going to shut him up and guys like him to? The star news blog is nothing but a bunch of little league dads heaping praise on each other helping their kid get a shot at riding the pine and mowing coaches lawn. Do we really want that here? Fred just watch for the nonsense and the profanity and thing will be fine. Your right you cant be here 24/7 it’s up to us to look out for the junk
Fred,
doing good job and one of the posters was right, don't go the road of how many hits this blog gets to decide on how good it is doing. I know you are professional and won't slam a former co-worker/friend and I respect that, but believe me, the majority of people that come here like the topics, but didn't like the bs that came last year and many of us did contact Aram about it and little did that do.
As for Thomas defenders, no need to be. He's properly placed on the list, just an observation I made. I think he does good job.

Aight cool...thanks Fred.
I can tell you all right now, they don't pay us by the hits. The popularity of this blog is flattering and great for high school sports in the SGV, but I've never liked sales and I'm not about to start thinking like a salesperson now. I'm not going to set any hard ground rules, but I will eliminate comments that take unnecessary shots at the coaches and kids we blog about. But understand, I'm not monitoring this blog 24-7. When it's brought to my attention through an email or when I'm fishing through the comments, I'll get rid of the garbage as soon as I can.
But I must admit, I've deleted very few comments since I took over last week. For the most part, I've read nothing but spirited and knowledgeable comments from most of you.

Re: Posted by: Rob at August 17, 2007 04:16 PM
Your 100% correct, I believe the former moderator encouraged the way things were conducted before Fred took over.
I read the Star news threads and for the most part things never got out of control nor did Fred play favorites when it came to readers, on the other hand I have watched threads on here degenerate into personal attacks towards both kids and bloggers without any intervention.
There is a reason many coaches did not like the way things were ran in the past and with good reason, there was very little positives to take from it and many negatives to be sure.
Re: Prime Time
As I stated earlier I am on many different forums and everyone of these makes you sign in with one and only one screen name, it does provide for a certain measure of accountability and keeps things level. On this forum I can be anybody I chooose to be at any given time, I can post respectful and positive things under Joe Colt and then turn around and answer myself under anonymous, then answer myself again as John Doe etc etc. By being able to do this it cant possibly be kept real or taken seriously, thats just my opinion but please try to understand why having just one screen name keeps the playing field level.
Joe Colt
I THINK WE ALL LIKE THE IDEA OF KEEPING IT SOMEWHAT CIVIL BUT AS I SAID EARLER -- WHO IS c.i.a.?? AND WHAT IF THE NEXT TIME HE POSTS UNDER JOE BLOW. AND THEN TOM SMITH. WHAT HAVE YOU SOLVED? MAYBE IGNORE WHAT YOU WANT BUT FRED PLEASE, PLEASE TRY AND KEEP IT OF THE COACHES PERSONAL LIVES AND I DON'T REALLY WANT TO KNOW ABOUT WELLS HOME SITUATION, THAT IS WHERE ARAM LET IT RUN WAY OUT OF CONTROL, BUT HE LOVED TO COUNT THE "HITS". HE LOVED TO STIR THE POT THEN BAIL AND LET A FEW OF HIS BUDDIES DEFEND HIM WHENEVER HE TOOK A BEATING FOR IT, FRED - DON'T GO DOWN THAT ROAD PLEASE. THE "HITS" AREN'T WORTH IT. SIGNED, ANONYMOUS
Fred,
You may start deleting out of control posts? God Bless You, your predecessor (sp?) didn't know he had that control or chose to ignore it...This is a forum for interesting posts, not a bash this coach or player forum, which it became with the guy before it. He got carried away with the amount of hits he was getting...A kid from Bonita was mentioned and having a huge piece of anatomy last year...yeah, i'm sure the kid didn't mind, but to leave it on for a few days at least, was ridiculous.
Fred
When you take away someone’s right to an "anonymous" post, you will not have a blog!
Language is one thing, but names are not a big deal!
Don't kid yourself, Joe Amat, Joe Colt aren't real names either.
Thanks Joe, and in the meantime, I'm strongly encouraging everyone to use a screen name and stick with it. It's not a big deal really, and it still allows all of you to stay anonymous. If the anonymous posts start to get out of control, I might start deleting them myself.
Fred J,
Thats great that its being considered, even though a screen name doesnt exactly tell everyone else who you really are it will tend to keep the dialogue civil and informative.
To be quite honest with you I actually stayed away from the blog because there were so many haters on it that it was tough to express an opinion, I hope you can make this a positive influence on SGV prep sports instead of a place thats banned by coaches and shunned by true fans.
Joe Colt
Joe Colt, that's something we've talked about but haven't ironed out yet. We've figured out how to keep the profanity off the blog, but you're right, I'm tired of looking at anonymous posts too. I'll keep on our tech people.
we got some pretty tough critics on this blog...the problem is none of us really know how hard it is to run a program year in and year out
as a man as a human being have you ever had a bad day/month/year??? no one on here can say they havent so why do we hold these coaches to a higher standard
everyone on this list has done or is doing something great
im listening to am570 right now and phil jackson is getting ripped by callers o by the way he almost has more rings then fingers
this blog is filled with cowards if you wanna bash someone then put your real name down
Fred J,
Is there any way to have the people that post here use one and only one screen name so we can have an intelligent dialogue?
I belong to other forums and the people that use them have to have a screen name and sign in when they want to add input or read the boards, these multiple anonymouses really take away from this blog and create confusion.
Joe Colt
Sorry, guys I didn't mean to start so much mess. We are here for the boys. The way I see it,I have nothing bad to say about a person unless they do somthing to me directly. I can't rely on hear say. I'm not gonna bash another guy just because someone else had a bad experiance with them. Now that being said, lets look forward to this up coming football season. Lets talk a little trash and have some fun.
joe a - you are so right on many levels. verti does have to prove himself and he** yeah there is a lot of pressure. i am not even sure if the parents know 1/2 of what these coaches go through nowadays. it would be nice if all they had to do was "coach" but now all the money THEY have to try and raise - its crazy. that is only a small portion but they shouldn't have to worry about some of that stuff.
AND CIA TELLS US SO MUCH. MORON
It's a little bit about X's & O's, but more about the Jimmys & Joes.
"...All things being equal..." is the key and, as pointed out, even the best coaches on the list (Farrar/Bogan/Gano) have have struggled at times. Now they are on top - and that's what matters most...for now. You've gotta produce to be relevant, so MV is not in the conversation...yet.
You can win games, or inspire people. If you do the latter it could lead to the former. And at least people(kids/parents) see the light at the end of the tunnel even if the wins aren't their yet. Not being in the locker room, but hearing second hand (or third from what kid's tell their parents) there isn't much inspiring going on. That leads to the dissension that you saw after the season and the defections at the beginning (not counting the "alledged" discipline issues).
Since someone brought up coaches from other sports, in basketball we're partial to Coach Lokar, who was the coach for amat's only CIF basketball title in 2002. How many SGV boy's teams have even won a title? Three? A parent of a player that played 3 sports at amat said that his son said that the pre-game talk before the championship game was the best he had ever heard...in any sport. That was enough for me. That was a great group of kids that overachieved and upset some teams along the way (at least Artesia?) That is what inspiring is. We need to get him back.
One man's Bandwagon is anothers Loyalty, another man's Hater is someone elses Realist. There are a ton of *loyal realists* at amat that will stick by the school - even if they disagree with the way that things are handled. Then hope the that ship gets rightened somewhere along the way.
We can only hope! Unfortunately, MV is cutting his teeth at the "Toughest job in the SGV". Not always a formula for success. At least not now. As said - the jury's out, but there IS hope.
Big Daddy, Dont waste your time with "Anonymous" He's all over these bloggs with his poison and always has a reason for his stupid statements but never shares what they might be. He is just a little cry baby with dirty diapers who wants attention. WAAA. He should have the guts to use a moniker but he is a coward. Here I will give him one . How about "Annoy Us","Anus" "Baby Man" "Diaper Boy" "PW" "Mommas Boy", Mommy doesn't love me " "bench warmer" I could go on..But I wont waste any more grey space on this dope
Coach Morrison should be on this list I agree with Don. He gets results on the field and in the classroom while never forgetting that these are young men growing up needing guidance. He is more than a football coach he is a mentor. Its about the boys that begin the season and the men they have become by the end of the season.
Gano was a great Coach, but from what I seen and herd it looks like he has lost the passion at LA. He has some talent right now at other positions and is going with lesser talented kids because he has an obligation to them because they either transffered from other schools or because a dad is kissing but and pushing their kids on Gano or other staff. this is from the inside. QB position they have a kid with the height arm strength and some experience and he has him working with the recievers. I seen this kid work out and he is as good as any QB in the valley. I thought that Gano would let him compete against the other QB's that checked in. Bogan he is a great motivator and the kids want to play for him. Kids at LA have mixed feeling at LA right now.
Big Daddy -- which anonymous are you talking about? You get that there are several right? I happen to love South Hills and my kid is happy there but we know a few that have had a bad experience with Thomas. It's allowed so don't be so thin skinned, it's my right to think it.
Anonymous, do you have anything good to say about any body???
The Tribune covers all the teams in the Mission Valley League with the exception of Gabrielino, which is a Star-News only team. Rosemead, lucky for them, is covered by both newspapers.
Enough with the who's who. Are you ready for some football!!! Seeing my boys in pads makes a dad feel proud. I can't wait for the boys to get it on.
Don great break down on the coaches. I know it will be tough for all the coaches. All the coaches will have there hands full this year.
Easy, Legend, I don't happen to think Thomas is up there with a few of them. if thats ok with you I have some good reasons behind it and NO he didn't bench my kid.
I think Schools East of 605 are SGV Tribune & most West of 605 Star News . I could be wrong ...
TM
kinda off subject but asking anyways...
Which paper covers the Mission Valley League(MVL)?
(Rosemead, El Monte, Arroyo, S. El Monte, Mt. View, and Gabrielino)
Is it the Trib'? or Star? 'Cause the Trib' always has something on Arroyo and maybe the South but never anything on the other teams in league. Yet the Star always seems to cover the 'MEAD and Gabby a few times but hardly ever any Arroyo news. Are the papers boundries of coverage restricted by what freeways you cross? Even though its the same league?
Just curious...
As far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out on Verti and I don't follow the MVL but IMHO:
Teaching the Game (aka: building a better football player) - Farrar, Podley, Roche, Bogan, Gano, Maggiore,
Pasquarella, Thomas
Program Development (aka: hiring a great staff and hooking up players) – Farrar, Bogan, Gano, Roche, Maggiore, Thomas, Pasquarella, Podley
Winning 101 (aka: Team and Game management) – Gano, Bogan, Farrar, Thomas, Podley, Roche, Pasquarella, Maggiore
Still the "trinity", Bogan, Farrar, and Gano.
I.m sort of surprised Coach Morrison wasn't in the mix. For my dough, he's at least in the top five in two of my categories.
Romey,
If I'm thinking with my heart...I'm NOT resigned to my fate at all.
If I'm thinking with my head.....I'm resigned to my fate.
So Romey I'll let you decide what I'm thinking....I think you already know.

Why thank you for making my point "Covinas Done" ...yes lets look at some coachs like Phil Jackson a guy know x's and o's but with out Shaq or Jordan great players he is one and done in the playoffs. You must be for the 3rd world country otherwise knowen as Northview!
A couple other coachs who you might think are great:
Pete Carroll (Patriots, Jets not so great there)
Tony Dungy (Bucs he was so, so)
Steve Spurrier (Redskins he was terrible)
The point is coachs dont just figure it out on how to coach...most of them know what they are doing and then when they get the players who can run the system them become great coachs.
So as a final answer , If I HAD to pick a Coach ....without EVER meeting the man . It would probably be Bogan . CIF titles tell the story ...
JUST WIN BABY !!!
So Mike the clone are you resigned to your fate already?
I agree with the removal of the HAPPY ROCK coach..., again NO DISRESPECT .Sisinger has BIG shoes to fill , after McKinnon "THE LEGEND " left Arroyo , but seems to be doing a good job . Erik Escamiila also seems to be doing a pretty good job . Despite everyones dibelief ...The MVL is a tough league & CONSISTENTLY gets NO LOVE on this site . What about an all league all star team . I bet MVL players would be VERY competitive . All in all the SGV NEVER gets the Respect it should .
FIGHT ON
TM
Even with Kobe Phil Jackson is a great x's and o's guy...where are the Lakers.? one and done!
Wish Verti would see this blog and hear what you SH and LA bloggers say about those motivational speeches Bogan and Gano give..that is so necessary in getting your team pumped to play. Verti does none, I mean absolutely none of that at all!........then again you have to be a good speaker and motivator not to mention salesperson rolled into one...some have it some dont.
Hater,
I thought that was pretty toned down!
I'm trying to be a nicer,gentler,Clone.....
Late!
Mike the Clone
Let me kill that argument made by Anonymous at August 17, 2007 11:04 AM you know the one were you said Thomas has to do something since the studs left, well lets see so Gano, Bogan and Farrar are winning titles with lesser talent...Oh wait a minute about 10 or so years agao Gano at Northview (not to impressive) Bogan at South Hills (was batteling for third place in league) and Farrar at the Oak, well we dont want to talk about some of those early 90's teams.
You guys just dont get it...Yes a coach can be great with the x's and o's but that does not always mean wins (and all three of the coachs that were mention above know x's and o's). Let me put it this way if you dont have the players you are not going to be good.
Or as I like to say "you cant win the kentucky derby with a donkey"

Verti should not be on that list until he proves himself......Toughest job in the SGV yes, but that does not make you a good coach...he need a playoff berth before he can get on anyones list.
STEVE BOGAN-San Antonio League Champions for 6 of the last 7 years, In the last 6 years South Hills has been to the CIF finals 5 times and 4 of those times they have come away with titles.
No other coach in the SGV or CIF can come close. Bogans a legend around here. I mean the guys a genius when it comes to X's and O's. Steve Bogan Is South Hills!
if u guys think that coach gano gives a good speech before games, you should go see coach bogan man its like a lineup on what words to use he just knows how to get us pumped w/out yelling, hes good w/ speeches
Can you guys please read the question again....it says "all things equal", that means if everyone had the same talent...Fred asked who is the best with x and o's....So this is for you Rockne, Thomas has been at Covina for over 10 years now..why dont you ask you big game coach Gano what he thinks of Thomas knoweldge of the game. Here, why dont i just give you the answer Gano would give. "oh Thomas, he knows the game as good as any around"! Why cant you just give the guy his due...does this mean he is the best coach in the valley....well that is neither her nor there...cause all these guys have down things to prove themselves.
Looks like Mike the Clone is back. Just mention "PASQY" and the clone starts foaming. Easy big fella. If this blogg slows down somebody just post the word "PASQY" and the Clone will fire this baby back up. "CHECK YOURSELF", Clone Man. We need you here. It will be a long season without you. We love you man
hey sorry i read another post and saw bball and baseball so all you footballers don't go ballistic on me.
I agree, it will be interesting to see what Thomas can do now. A coach can have a few studs and it makes his job MUCH easier. We'll see. I will go with Gano but he is kind of a blow hard.
Pasqui for football for sure. Gano = good though
I gotta pass on basketball as I am not too sure or enough of a follower
I gotta agree on Murphy for baseball. I like Quinly but I think he is a bit more selective on who he will help. Murph all-around better
Fred,
I mean honestly look at our list as opposed to the Star-News list, LOADED! And to think all those guys over at the Star-News are all bent out of shape about the Mighty Coach Drain and his so called "power house" Rio Hondo Prep missing off their list. They can't be serious, are they? I mean really Rio Hondo Prep what a joke who do they play anyways? Ramona Convent, San Gabriel Mission High School. St. Lucy's ??????
Oh and Rockne......
"Pasquarella is as good as it gets with x's and o's...Put this guy in a film room for a couple hours and he will have the opponent broken down to a t."
Yup that about sums it up because he sure doesn't translate that film study into a real time game plan and that's if there is a game plan at all. I'll beleive he's got a game plan when starts carrying a game card with him and he has someone upstairs who knows what their doing and can help him out. "Pasqy" has got to get that offense caught up with what Strycula has done with defense.
Again Fred welcome to where the real high school football is played. Beleive me this is nothing wait till we all really get fired up!
Out!

Trojan man I, actually had Gladstone's Albert Sanchez up for a minute, then switched and added Arroyo's Singiser instead. So hard to do this without leaving qualities coaches off the list, and certainly Sanchez does a great job at Happy Rock. Koffler is another good choice, but again, who would you remove?
Well the list pretty much speaks for itself . But to mention HAPPY ROCK coach .....well no disrespect , is like putting the old Sierra Vista
RB Oscar Interiano in the same class as a say ...Reggie Bush . He may have some wins , but against WHO ??? Sierra Vista , Azusa , maybe a few others like The "DUCKS " from Mountain View . Let's get REAL. Matt Koffler has been doing pretty good with what Rosemead has to offer , the cupboards have been pretty bare & he has done a GREAT job consistently competing for league . And semis appearance .
Gano is John Robinson of the Valley...If he has a team that can play, he lets them...great pr guy and will wake up the dead if throws one of his passionate speeches out there.
Just kick it around: Who do you want to coach for basketball and baseball?
Basketball- Le Duc is the best and Pres is good too.
Baseball- I'd go with Murphy or Quinley.
All choices are good...Big game speeches goes to Gano from Los Altos...If you get a chance, go by the lockerroom before they come out and you will hear a speech that will make you want to buckle up and go play...Makes the kids believe the whole community and alumni are expecting and demanding a win. Can't argue with Bogan's success. Big Lou, good head coaches sorround themselves with good asst. coaches and lots of credit goes to the asst. at C. Oak. Also, helps to have an interesting pipeline that runs from Pasadena to Charter Oak. That would be a good article, how does Pasadena kids end up at Charter Oak every year. Pasquarella is as good as it gets with x's and o's...Put this guy in a film room for a couple hours and he will have the opponent broken down to a t. The Pod at Bonita, does anyone spend more time with football than this guy? When he's not in the classroom or football field, he can be seen in La Verne establishments drawiing up schemes on napkins. The guy has a healthy diet of bacon, not because of the taste, but because it's PIGSKIN. Thomas, gotta see the guy minus McDonough. Covina was not very good for a few years before McD, so it's coaching time now for the boys at the Farm.
