The latest: Two adult spectators caught on camera fighting in the stands during last week’s Bonita-San Dimas girls volleyball match have been contacted and disciplined, a school district official said Monday.
William Brinegar, the assistant superintendent in charge of human resources at the Bonita Unified School District, said the names of those involved and the sanctions will not be released, per district policy.
“We’re certainly disappointed it occurred,” Brinegar said of the altercation. “You never want that sort of thing happening. But given that it did, actions have been taken regarding those involved.”
According to an eyewitness who asked not to be identified, the fight started after fans began throwing food and other items in the stands.
The witness said an adult approached a student he felt was responsible for throwing items, and that’s when another adult became involved, resulting in the altercation between the two adults.
“Bottom line is there was a disagreement and misunderstanding and it resulted in two parents getting into an altercation,” Brinegar said. “We don’t generally get into specifics because there isn’t much benefit to it.
“However, the person we’ve identified as being responsible for starting it has been contacted and is receiving appropriate sanctions. The others involved that we have identified also have received appropriate sanctions.”
No assault charges have been filed, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department.
“As far as an assault being committed, it’s up to the individual who believes they were assaulted to file a report,” Brinegar said. “That’s something for the appropriate party to consider. There’s not much we can do about that.”
San Dimas High School principal Kristine Kulow also would not elaborate but appeared frustrated by the attention the altercation has received.
“The people involved know what’s happening,” Kulow said. “Why don’t you just let it die? It’s being handled.”
Thom Simmons, director of sports information for the CIF-Southern Section, said he was aware of the incident and was satisfied that both schools acted appropriately.
“The sanctions should come from the schools,” Simmons said. “We can make suggestions, but to our understanding they’ve taken it in-house and are acting appropriately.
“The only time we would step in is if an obvious egregious act had occurred and the schools did nothing about it. But that’s not the case here.”

SAN DIMAS – You don’t expect a girls volleyball team trailing in the fifth game to reel off 11 consecutive points.
That is, unless you’re Bonita coach Morgan Coberly. Bonita surprised many by scoring the final 11 points en route to a 25-23, 19-25, 25-13, 17-25, 15-5 victory over San Dimas on Wednesday in a heated nonleague rivalry in front of a raucous crowd at San Dimas High School.
“With this team, I almost do expect it,” Coberly said. “Early this season, we’ve been really streaky.”
The Bearcats trailed 5-4 in the fifth when Kristen Phillips’ kill got things started by tying the score and giving the ball to Kaitlyn Mang to serve. Mang didn’t give it up and served an ace on the line for the second-to-last point. Katy McCreery’s kill on the final point then finished off the Saints.
