« TOP TEN: Los Altos, Glendora, DRanch, clearly the top three | Main | Fans fight in the stands during Bonita's victory over San Dimas »

How big are the other games in the SGV?

Read this blog and you know everything about Los Altos, Glendora, South Hills, Bishop Amat, Damien, Covina, Northview, San Dimas, West Covina and Bonita. But what about the others teams in the SGV? There's a guy in our office who keeps telling me the Sierra Vista-Baldwin Park game on Friday is a huge city rivalry. I'm sure its big for the fans and alumni of those schools, but it's not one of those rivalries that draws much interest outside their circle. I do get those occasional phone calls asking why we always feature the same schools and big games on our front page, and the explanation is always that we play-up the teams that are having successful years and generate the most reader interest. Baldwin Park is having an average year and Sierra Vista is down, but being a rivalry, we will give it the attention it deserves. But be honest, most of our readers aren't rushing out on Saturday to find out what happened in Baldwin Park. They want to know about Los Altos-Damien, or Charter Oak-Glendora. At least this week. So again, to those who ask about other rivalries like Workman-La Puente, Mountain View-El Monte or Gladstone-Azusa and wonder why they're not covered as thoroughly as the others, tell us why they should.

To Saintsr4real:
The Saint's had taken the smudgepot about 3 or 4 years ago, But Bonita took it back the following year where it has remained since.

Prior to the new football coach's arrival the Saints had been lacking in plays that work and teamanship, they to be a finely oiled machine these days.

One of the previous coach's had a problem with too many girls in the locker room of which many think he enjoyed having present, leads one to speculate as to WHY......

Well the big Game of rivals Saints and Bearcats is comming soon, should be a really good game.
Coach Podley know's there's a lotta work to be done to even get close to a win, them Saints are 4 and 0 whereas the Bearcats have had some good moments and they have had a few injuries but thier spirit is strong and they have a hugh fan base supporting them.
It will be a, I predict a very close game, maybe some overtime who knows the Saints may have a chrome plated smudgepot in there school lobby soon to show off. They are playing Very Well.
Don't let the parents of the vollyball game ruin what will be a great evening of high school football.
Don't we teach our kids temperance by example ???.
Let's behave ourselfs in public and show how good our character and pride is !

I wish both teams good luck and have a great and fun evening.

Hey DavidBrown..That's great that all these other schools are being mentioned now in. In the late 90's nobody would pair to the great Nogales squids. About time other's schools caught up. Coach S will get them back to the power house name we once were.

GO BULLDOGS !! 2-1 WOOOO

I heard there were over 4,000 fans at the Bpark-Sierra Vista game. That's incredible, kudos to the fans for supporting their schools.

Hey LP Alumi(?),

I'm glad you're not making any decisions for the school because if we take your advice, we're going to fall into the tailspin that our school knows way too much.

Listen, the football program is headed in the right direction. Just accept that fact. If you truly are an Alum (or Alumi?), you should be supporting this, not making zany, psychotic recommendations that we all know is irrelevent. Bringing in this freshmen head coach you speak of so highly is only going to the slow the progress of the program.

Besides, again, if you are truly and alum, you SHOULD KNOW that the players who play on the freshmen team do not necessarily stick around and play varsity all four years. Many of the best players that I played with on my freshmen team at LP all decided that football was not going to be for them the very next year! We definitely could have used them, but I think we were better without them!

Hey JOE COLT...we love ya man! We know you love Amat's juicy c***! You should come on over, we can have a party!

MV & TS

Hey hey hey...it's the f*** nut twins again! We actually won last night against Rancho Cucamonga. See...I told you we were better than a public school! I mean, come on...we're Bishop Amat...home of the Mexilancers!!! We're #1, we're #1!!! You know it, we know it! For the life of me, I don't know why we're not ranked at least #2. Like what the fat Mexican kid said a few weeks ago ... "even if Amat goes 0-10, we could still beat everyone on the top 10." Well, from the words of the fat guy in the movie Mall Rats..."you dumb bastard!" No more beans for you, porky! Hey Glenn Martinez and Escalera...WHAT'S UP? Viva Bishop Amat...go Mexilancers! Well, this has been your weekly update from the apartment of Mark and Tom here in the pretty city of La Puente!

Next week? How many ways to make a taco at a Bishop Amat home game.

Until next week...

Los Altos looks like the real deal and a force to be reconned with in the tough Miramonte League. They spotted Damien a 10-0 first quarter lead and roared back to dominate both sides of the ball. And won going away 31-20. McBride is maybe the best back to play at the school in their storyed history since Binky Benton.

to:Falcon Pride
Do you know why they pulled thier starters? I'll tell u why. They were scared. If you were at the game you would seen LP got a lot of hard hits on wilson. Wilson's headcoach started to get scared so he took out his starters

And yes, let's compare Duarte to the teams in SA, Miramonte and Sierra Leagues. But first, take away 1/2 the student body from each of the schools in these leagues and then see how the football programs would match up. Duarte has a student body of 1215 (the least in the Montview league) whereas the average student body of the schools in the SA league is 2500, Miramonte is 2000 and Sierra is 2700. Why don't you just give credit where credit it is due? For a school with only 1200 students, you can't deny what coach Crutchfield has done for the DHS football program, including a trip to the CIF Semifinals last year.

One flew over the Duarte track,
Why don't you re-read the post before you start running your mouth. I was simply quoting the LP Alumni who stated and I quote (hence the use of quotation marks in my post)"last years and this year's multitalented Duarte team were beaten by La Puente as freshmen respectfully".

Falcon Pride, who are YOU trying to fool?? "multi-talented"? No. Your team is small in stature, and overall roster size. Your best players, exception Chris Harris, are nothing but track stars in football pads, who lack basic positional fundementals, and don't like getting hit. You undeservingly squeaked by a ESHS team who fielded mostly Sophmore, and Junior starters, they literally started a COUPLE seniors. Your coach use some lessons in football technique and theory 101. You guys would finish next to last in the Miramonte, and third in S.A., and dead last in the Sierra.

Those facts about LP & Duarte are not intended to pick on Duarte it's just that at this time they are the best team in Montveiw League play and the point being made is that the last two years La Puente has had the players but the current coaching staff (2 years on board) are not cutting it!!! and the head coach has chosen not to have that great coach involved in the program, he must be intimated by him or is just plain dumb. One more good point he accomplished that all awhile the best incomming freshmen in the district were going to Los Altos & Wilson I give big props to Duarte and Coaching staff

Umm..Ok..... Well what happened to all that 2003 & 2004 freshman talent who were last years Juniors and seniors? Did they leave? Because Duarte beat LP 56-0

The freshmen teams for both La Puente & Duarte were 2003 & 2004 which would be last years seniors and this year's seniors to be exact if you want the scores
2003 - LP 12 Duarte 0 @ LP
2004 - LP 29 Duarte 0 @ Duarte
all that speed was shut down and I was there, go ask the seniors and last years seniors

The Gladiators have no chance against Pioneer...they are gonna get smashed....

Gladstone-7
Pioneer-46

But look out 4 Ryan Gomez making his first start 4 gladstone...

LP Alumni,
Who are you trying to fool? "last years and this year's multitalented Duarte team were beaten by La Puente as freshmen respectfully"
I've been at every lower level game for Duarte (JV and/or Freshmen)for the past three year and when has LP beat Duarte? This years Junior class of DHS were the undefeated league champs as Freshmen, not LP. Duarte's Freshman team beat LP in 05 and went undefeated that year, then beat them again last year as the JV team. These are the players that are now on Varsity so which LP team are you referring to?

Anonymous, who are you trying to fool?!? I was at the LP vs Wilson game, and LP got smacked!! They scored the majority of their points, Wilson pulled their starters on O and D. P.S. Wilson is terrible! Their only win will come against Bonita who is worse, I saw them play Covina.

I'm just tired of people sayin La Puente suck.I think this year would be a better year than the previous years. I think people really under arrestimate LP. They show a lot of pride in thier football program. I say tomorrow LP has a chance against Bosco Tech.
Score
LP=31
Bosco=28

The Dons have no chance against the Braves and will lose by 30+ points. Baldwin has the advantage and it will take more than a couple miracles and some for the Dons to even have a chance on this one, and everybody knows it.

Bp 35 - Sv 0

La Puente should be a better team than they have shown the last two years from last years seniors to this year's seniors and juniors were all undefeated leauge champions as freshmen under a super coach, last years and this year's multitalented Duarte team were beaten by La Puente as freshmen respectfully I know it's not varsity but they were just as talented then as they are now, that coach just knew how to attack and defend them. La Puente is just underachieving under the current coaching staff. The head coach should re-involve that coach in the program.

There is no doubt this friday, there will be some great games. Arroyo and Alhambra is going to be a great match up. In my opinion both teams are great and will be difficult to say who comes on top.In the other hand with the Los Altos and Daimen game is also going to be great. With McBride(whom i played with freshmen yr at Bishop Amat)the tail back is going to be a great factor and hard to take down. They also have a great defense along with anohter player who i also played with at Bishop.(Richard Maciel) a linebacker with great size and skill. I believe the conquers will have the advantage on this one.

Arroyo 21 - Alhambra 14
Los Altos 35 - Daimen 21

hey man im tired of hearing all this b-s about La Puente not doing good....two weeks ago they played wilson...and wilson thought they could just walk in there in kill and destroy LP but LP fought hard to stay in dat game nd it was a close game to da end...evn thought they lost..A week ago they playd ganesha and eveyone though they would only win by 7 or 10 points but they beat them 27-0.....i say LP has a chance....i have been to some of their practices and every time i have gone to thier practice they work there ass of....Tomorrow they play basco tech....it's going to be a good game between them if they just play and go fast every play i think they would do good and end up on top

I can't until Montview league starts. The battle of the winless, how exciting is that?

gladstone has a good player on there team..richard gurrola..he will step up this week as well as the rest of the recieving core with chris mendoza and fabian oton as well as jesse rodiguez...

go gladstone!!!!!!!!!

go gladstone

I think its only fair to give the workman vs la puente game a little shine next week. Its a big game thats relevant to alot of people. Workman had a great season last year with little to no coverage on your part.

Hey Fred, thanks for recognizing this rivalry in B.P. This game is huge in the community and will be a great site at the new stadium at B.P.H.S.
You are correct in saying that there are bigger games this weekend, but for us in B.P., this is it.......Thanks again for giving some love to both schools.

GO BRAVES !!!!

Bassett vs. La Puente, now that's a great rivalry. I could envision all the cholos on one side throwing their gang signs and on the other side the other cholos getting ready to rumble.....oh were you talking about a football game when you said rivalry?

It's not just the tribune that gives the main rivalries their media push, FSN is covering WC v. SH that just shows how big the rivalry is. But last year the tribune did give more media coverage to the "turkey bowl" than some of the other games that week.

morrison needs to use the rb more screens n swing passes mix up the play calling is as if he only hastwo plays in his playbook step up n shut all these pansies up prepare for glory

I feel sorry for the wives. My daughter can beat up your daughter!! Can not...Can so..Can not...Can so..

WAY to throw a dog a bone ...Sierra Vista Vs Baldwin Park .....WHO CARES !!! Sorry just facts , neither team has ANY CHANCE of competing for a championship , but I guess they do deserve SOME grey space . Best of luck to both teams ...

Will we see Lawrence Phillips on the BP sidelines

Nice pictures of those idiots fighting at the Bonita San Dimas Volleyball game.
I feel bad for their daughters.... talk about humiliation.

Unless Damien gets better line play on offense, its secondary settles down and covers their man, and the play calling gets better, I see LA coming out with a win, probably by 8+.

Wish it wasn't so, but Damien hasn't played too well in either of its two wins.

Why do losers always say its about heart? Winners dont have heart? DAMIEN are you winners? Step up and defeat LA. Defend SPARTA!! This is our house!! THE WETTER THE BETTER. LET IT RAIN>>>

I love these anonymous opinions. Why is it that those that want to humiliate kids never leave their name? This blog is for opinions, not a drama court. Leave your name behind your opinion or check your opinion at your house. Damien has not put it all together yet that much I agree. But who are you to judge on greatness? It's not measured byt the W/L column, it's measured by the heart. The Spartans have battled adversity and overcome, and it's only week 4 for these men. By the way, they proudly display their colors, can you say the same?

davidbrown from c-town, nice comment about the vatos locos, but truly man, there is more crime and thugs on Covinas campus than there is at B.P.
When is the last time you read about a kid from B.P. athletics doing anything stupid like your guys, or someone gettin stabbed to death on campus. Not at B.P. but Covina is pretty bad.....

Nice graphic hu, its going to be crazy in BP this Friday go check it out.

Fred,

nice to give these rivalries some pub. even though many of us are not too excited about them, to the players it is their USC/UCLA-Ohio St Michigan, or Duke North Carolina.

Good luck to all of them and may they compete their @$$#$ off

South El Monte has had a difficult start. But they are loaded with athletes. They should come around soon.

Talk about future games heating up......

The "Smudgepot" game, San Dimas vs Bonita, is coming up on October 5th. Big Time Rivals!

Does anbody know when was the last time Saints came out with a big "W"?

The Saints are definitely not one dimensional. The Powerhouse of Barbone, Kalmar, Brown and Joseph on offense and the Withem brothers on defense, we are the team that will make the biggest statement this year!

Prediction: Saints 28...Bearcats 17 !!!
My prediction

sounds like the vatos locos from the 2 schools are about to play soccer... o wait its still football season.

Not that big of a deal Fred. I predict very little if not a bunch of sarcastic comments. Who really wants to hear about Azusa, Workman, Walnut, Nogales...now Bassett that's another story.

Damien will lose Friday. No run game, and a weak passing game. The Spartan's best hope is to put LA in 3rd and long conditions, putting that young QB in a pressure situation, and hope that someone like Pacman McMahon and Taylor Herrera can pull a couple rabbits out of their hats in the return game. I am rooting for Damien, but they have not, by any means so far, shown any signs of greatness.

Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick...............

Joe Colt

The ARROYO vs. Alhambra game this Friday should be getting hyped up more from this newspaper group because ARROYO is having a successful season so far and is facing a major Pasadena Star-News school at Moor Field. Now, the west san gabriel paper mentioned previuosly doesnt even cover ARROYO, meaning the school from North El Monte gets no love in the top ten rankings of the star-news. So this game on Friday should stand as a rivalry among papers. Other games that will generate much reader interest among the ARROYO faithful include match-ups versus El Rancho (a major Whittier Daily team) in week 4. Also vs. EM, SEM, and Rosemead.

like every year bp will smash sierra vista. like always
idk about this year though, i havent seen none of these teams but who knows, maybe sv can pull up the upset

what division is Northview in?

Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick...............

Joe Colt

WAIT AND SEE, NORTHVIEW AND COVINA WILL BE A BASH!! THIS GAME WILL BE POPPING OF LIKE THE FOURTH OF JULY!!!!!
