Is Horton's move good or bad for the SGV?
Unless you were out of town over the Labor Day weekend, like me, you probably heard that Cal State Fullerton baseball coach George Horton has decided to leave Southern California and become the new coach at Oregon, which is reviving its baseball program, beginning in 2009.
Now the comings and goings of an out-of-area college coach usually isn't expected to get much play on a blog that covers SGV prep sports. But in recent years, Cal State Fullerton was practically Cal State SGV. Several of the Titans top players in recent years came from SGV high schools, including former Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year Wes Roemer (Glendora) and all-conference players Sergio Pedroza (Northview), Brett Pill (Covina), Danny Dorn (Diamond Bar) and Richie Burgos (Bishop Amat). Horton played a big part in that. When Augie Garrido was at the helm, Fullerton rarely recruited outside the OC borders. But Horton changed that. He recognized the SGV for what it is - a baseball hotbed. The results speak for themselves. With some SGV flavor, Fullerton became an elite program, making six College World Series appearances and winning one national title during his 10-year reign. But even better, the Titans were clearly the SGV Titans.
The question now is what effect will his departure mean to SGV baseball? Will they still be the SGV Titans or will SGV's best follow him to the Pacific Northwest? Or worse, will they be spread throughout the land, losing that name recognition of showing the nation at the CWS how good the baseball in the SGV really is.
The anwer, probably, will not come soon enough.

Upper brass at csuf did not contact nieto. That's a fact. what would they contact him for? was not respected at usc at all by opposing coaches or his own players. he's not even the best high school coach around here and someone thinks one of the best baseball schools in the nation would consider that? come on, wake up.
The news about Serrano returning to Fullerton is awesome. Yes, it is good for the SGV, and also for all of those recruits - who are certain to remain committed to Fullerton now!
It's official. We have blue and orange smoke coming out of Titan House. The Cal State Fullerton website just released the Serrano is Fullerton's new baseball coach. This should be good for the SGV.
If that's true, that would be the ultimate hire for Fullerton and the SGV, since Serrano was the recruiting coordinator when he coached under Horton at Fullerton. He is probably a big reason why so many SGV players wound up in the OC.
Dave Serrano, head coach at UC Irvine, will return to Fullerton announced on the Baseball America web site. Serrano was assistant to Horton at Fullerton for a few years before his stint at UCI.
Nieto could be on his way to CSUF. Look what he has done...
He won a CIF Title WITH KENDRENA'S Players.
SC was simply horrible the last 5 years he was there.... Kruter absolutely couldn't stand him, he didn't even get an INTERVIEW. Talk about being shown the door!!
Nieto has always been an "I" and looking for the angle.... Wouldn't be surprised if he left..
He isn't long for Amat anyway...
Coach Beck will be the new Head dog at Bishop.
Beck is a True Lancer.... Nieto a poser...
I have no idea how this will affect the 2008-09 recruits. I'm sure it will depend on who the new coaching staff is. In my opinion, most of them will probably stay because of Fullerton's history of producing great players. However, a lot of people associated that winning tradition with Coach Horton and the good coaches he always surrounded himself with, just as they did when Augie Garrido was there. Now that he is gone I don't know. There are a lot of good coaches out there that would love to have this job. Like I said - we'll have to wait and see. Hopefully, they can find a good replacement very soon.
Nieto was contacted by CSFU upper brass to take the helm of the Titan nine.
covinabaseballfan,
how does this affect early commits to fullerton for 2008-09..? any of them want out or looking elsewhere? this is tough on them. your decision on where to go and play ball is big time decision.
College coaches are hired to "teach" baseball, and if you have a good one like Horton, they'll teach you honesty, respect, and many other things that are lacking in so many athletes today. But no, they do not teach in a classroom. At certain universities they make more than some of the professors do. It depends a lot on the administration and how committed they are to athletics, as well as how much money the school has. Schools with football teams generally have more money - baseball is not a money-making sport. Cal State Fullerton has no football team, and no Phil Knight - they rely heavily on donations. In Oregon's case, with Phil Knight, the sky's the limit!
DUMB QUESTION MAYBE??? IS HORTON A TEACHER THERE AS WELL??? 600G - FOR COACHING?????????
Horton will be making in the range of $600,000+ at Oregon. Just a "little" more than he did at Fullerton! When they found out he was interested in the job, they pretty much opened the floodgates. Phil Knight had just donated $100 million to the Univ. of Oregon's baseball program. Coach Horton has turned down numerous job offers over the years from other universities for more money than he made at Fullerton, but the money, combined with the fact that they will pretty much do ANYTHING he wants, were just too much to turn down. If any coach in the country deserves this, it is Coach Horton. He is a great coach, as well as a great man. It is very sad for the kids in the SGV, but I'm confident whoever they name as the new head coach will do an excellent job. I wish Coach Horton and Coach Gill nothing but the best.
CSF will continue to recruit the players in the SGV if the talent is there, no question. Its always about the talent. If they stop recruiting from the SGV, its because the talent isn't there plain and simple. Fullerton has shown they like to keep it within the family and with naming Vandie Assoc Head Coach in June, my money is on them giving him the chance. If so, he'll stay the course since he was part of that process.
Thanks for the credit good topic, but this was Steve Ramirez's thread. Ramirez will be posting his own topics along with me throughout the year.
I would think that whoever takes over as the CSF baseball coach will continue to recruit the SGV along with the Inland Valley which has a lot of good baseball players. Diamond Bar has sent a lot of players to CSF due to the fact that head coach Rich Gonzales used to play for the titans. Most of the good players from DB either go to Santa Ana or CSF. Since baseball has limited scholarships it is much easier to get a partial ride and attend CSF rather than USC. CSF has a lot of new talent coming in next year and needs to hire the best coach they can attract. Lot of mention of hiring Vanderhook however according to CSF posters on the titan baseball website he has a bogus degree from Trinity U in Malaga Spain like Serrano the coach from UCI.
Fred,
Great topic, it will be interesting to see if fullerton continues to mop up in the sgv with Horton gone...If Vandy stays, than they will or should continue to look into the sgv, but if it's a new staff, might take a few years of trust to get local top talent...usc and others probabally eagerly awaiting to see what happens....I wonder if this affects decisions made already by Pill at Covina and does it affect another brother connection to Fullerton, Pedroza from Northview...I'll tell you one thing, the Titans will not even entertain the thought of Nieto coming there...Not respected in the college community at all and by former players at SC. Why would his brother at Cal High get a shot? I'm baffled by the thought of that even happening. I'd never attend a Fullerton game again if that happened.
That kind of money goes a lot further up in Eugene than it does in SoCal.
Just a thought? What if Coach Vanderhook lures away former Titan and current Amat coach Andy Neito. Neito is a hot commodity as he is fresh off a CIF championship, has recruited in So Cal and has played for the Titans.

Hire his Bro from CalHi?

Good luck to Coach Horton.
He has always said he looks to the SGV for players because it is one of the most under-recruited regions in the nation. Lets him pick some plums. I suspect he'll keep picking from Eugene.
Oregon State Beavers 2007 NCAA Baseball National Champs . NOT The University of Oregon Ducks .
GOOD LUCK COACH
BUIDING FROM SCRATCH???? DIDN'T OREGON GO TO OR WIN THE COLLEGE WORLD SERIES?????
New York,
The Oregon press release said Horton will have a base salary of $150,000 plus incentives from TV/Radio and merchandise sales in the amount of $250,000. So he will get quite a pay raise, but I also think he likes the idea of building a program from scatch.
i couldn't agree more TM -- keep our local kids here. Fullerton has always had and I assume will continue to have an outstanding baseball program.
AN UNLIMITED SUPPLY OF ANYTHING NIKE !!!
I wonder how much money and other perks Phil Knight has promised him.
Current SGV players on the Titan roster are Sr. pithcer Paul Canedo (Diamond Bar), Sr. pitcher Nolan Bruyninckx (Arcadia), Jr. infielder Eric Stephens (Monrovia), and FR. infielder Gary Brown(Diamond Bar). All four have a chance to have major roles this upcoming season for Fullerton.
I don't think the leaving of Horton will have much effect of recruitment of players out of the San Gabriel Valley. If Vanderhook gets the the job, as some expect, it will remain the same. He has always said the San Gabriel Valley has been good to them. He like the toughness of the San Gabriel Valley players. They just worked harder.
I am sure Horton will recruit Valley kids. The assistant coaches he hired are well schooled in the San Gabriel Valley as they have recruited from the area before.
Maybe they will go to USC & play for Chad Kreuter , not to shabby of a program over there . NOT THE BEST in LA but one of the best .I am ALWAYS excited when I hear of our local kids that stay HERE & play HERE in the southland .Best wishes to Coach Horton , I'll bet he will regret leaving So. Cal , NO BETTER PLACE ...PERIOD !!!
I LOVE L.A.
