Unlike Morrison to throw players under the bus in public. Doing it in private is more his style. The passes were overthrown, underthrown, poorly thrown or thrown under extreme pressure. The fact that 8 passes were caught was a testament to the quality of both the receivers and Danny's resourcefulness. The line was over matched by Los Altos DL. But more than comment on Morrison's lack of decency with that throwaway comment I'd like to comment on the positives. Damien as usual has the players any coach in the SGV or OC would covet. Salter is a load. Maybe used in combo stunts with Rabe and he's a DivI prospect as is Rabe. Rabe should be used on the inside rather than as a DE from time to time. Reyes and Sharerer are very good DEs.The DL needs stunts and needs to be rotated. They were gassed by the 4thQ. Where's Gallardo and Silva? The LB crew is better than last year's unit. They are much more disciplined in terms of depth and mobile. Simmons is so under rated it's a crime. Dominguez is legit. Very active LB in the London Fletcher mold and he can and will knock the crap out of you. Williams is coming around and if he focuses more on being a leader rather than a shouter and learning his keys he will easily be the stud he was predicted to be his Freshmen year. Still he's a surprise performer taht has really impressed. Let's talk Offense. Someone needs to see the game better. Damien is easily a 4-0 team. No one can completely cover this WR group. Too fast, too long, too bad they aren't used correctly. Read the defense and take what they give you. Several times against SJB and LA two receivers were being defende by 1 DB and Damien motioned out of that advantage. Why? No cohesive offensive second half plan in either SJB or LA. But the players are not the problem. Bento. Freidrich. Herrerea. Talmo. are all very good. Add Miller and Koprinac and there are outstanding. Alot has been made about Damien's lack of a running game. That's BS! Sainz is a So. back who esposes the lack of lower level position coaches at Damien. He's a stud. Quick, slick and gutsy and avg. over 4 y/carry. Hey he's a SO. and he's starting. Where are all the Senior and Junior RBs? Mc Mahon has speed, power and guts at RB but sometimes you have to know when to put your head down and eat some turf. That's what a RB coach would teach. Danny at QB is heroic. Wish he played defense with McHanan, Hererera and Kopribnac and THAT would be the best backfield in the valley! Haywood is young but a keeper and a big improvement at the safety position.. Oline needs to fire out more and be aggressive. They are in passive mode. The best pass blocking lines are the meanest. The best run lines are super aggressive. Get mean. You work hard but just get meaner and rough people up. Charter Oak might be in for a fall but that fall will come at a price. Is Damien willing to pay? I think so. Great game against LA. LA had a plan and eased into it after halftime. They had the confidence of Champions and strutted on the field like they owned it. And they did. Damien Spartans were Champions last year LONG LIVE THE KING! WITH MY SHIELD OR ON IT!!! Be the one that makes the difference!

First of all Charter Oak football players are a Class Act. Glendora's #3 Reggie Young has been tauting the CO athletes since last year and this childish and hood conduct continued throughout the game. A good athlete takes the wins and the loses in a good character. Glendora's #3 didn't even shake the Charter Oak players had at the close of the game. That says a lot. I hope his parents address his conduct because the coaches allowed it.

I guess everyone suprised that Charter Oak won ws due to the game officials doing everything in their power to give Glendora the win, but talent prevailed.

totally agree that Amat should run and go back to the Wing T offense. Seals,Wagner and Prieto would run that great. I am not sold on the Hernandez kid as a fullback..he is way to slow for my liking and he just cannot hit the hold fast enuf. He did catch a nice pass out of the bakc field and rumbled down the sideline for a good gainer but he is just not fullback of my choice. Passing game has only one go to reciever, Frank Lopez and we never utilize the TE silva on passing downs...He was wide open a few times during the Rancho game and he just never gets the ball thrown to him consistanly....If O-luth can throw to Blake Ales so much I am sure Verti being a ex-TE would want to throw to Julian Silva more...if your not going to run timing routes or have a percision passing game then the wing T is perfect for Amat....altho the line must be a force when running a wing T......I like the idea.

I think more people should follow you, I noticed that a few of the Glendora players actually stoppped and hugged a few of the CO players at the end of the game, great example of kids being kids..Now Glendora parents who like to put down everyone @ CO Learn from your boys, Parents don't get involved in a kid fight, kids will make up before the fight is even over and parents still hold on to a grudge..

Who cares who plays in the Valle Vista league or for that matter the Mission Valley league. I can name players from our league that you wont be able to match but what does it matter? It doesn't change the fact that N-view lost.

And why is it a joke that #10 Angel Alejandre could have and did have a better game than Robles? Its okay for you to insult or call another player a "joke"? but heavens forbid if we question the talent of a viking.

Its all good to have pride in your team and all but seriously, just accept the lost,stop making excuses,and move on. Its like you said, on any given night...

J Sutton - The only "desperation" pass as you put it, was the pass down the sideline for Alex Chang #3 that went for a touchdown. I'll admit that looked like a duck but other than that the rest of the passes looked good and were where the WR's needed them to be to make the catch.

Thank you for pointing that out. Yes, a handful of "Tartan fans" have cried some sour grapes, but the majority of us are being queit and letting CO have it's day. Don't know about the whole "chop block" thing, but that can be something a team just has to overcome. Anyone who says we lost because of loosing #20, doesn't know our team very well. Brent, get better son. You were having an amazing game and we will miss you. That fact is though, that he had not been a real factor in our first 2 games as we have really spread the rushing load around well. The penalties CO people have been crying about were deserved. They play very agressive (I'm not saying dirty) and with that comes penalties. It's something you must overcome and you just did. Our boys (and maybe the parents & coaches too) may have needed a tough loss like this to get a dose of reality...if you don't bring it each week (& I mean mentally as much as physically), even if you have a very good team, you will get knocked off by a good team like CO. They out-desired us & we made too many mental mistakes. So have your say all you basher's, our fans had a lot to say before the game (too much, for sure and too optimistic) so we have it coming. But this is still a very good team and the most important thing is trying to win our tough league. This game will help us as it did you last year, so for that thank you Charter Oak and good luck the rest of the way.

I still am wondering how co rushed for 200yds on the steal curtain D. Oh yeah, they got lucky. I wonder why they chose to rush the ball that many times on the last. Luck, or because they could and did! I guess ther defense sucked so bad that they accidentally got in the way of your RBs. All everyone heard about was your monsters up front and your killer LBS, did they miss the bus or maybe they were outplayed for 48 min. If your coaches and players are that much better you should have at least won by 10. I was at the Covina Walnut game on Thursday and was on Covinas side not as a fan but just to see a game and saw kids from Northview there with there jerseys cheering for Walnut on Covinas side NO CLASS... The kid that has the #2 jersey had a baby pacifier in his mouth walking around like he was the man. Northview got VERY BIG HEADED on the win against Walnut... Northview Football is ok for the leage there in weak......

Are you kidding me???!!! Rosemead came out fired up???!!!! Were you at the game? Rosemead went 3-n-out on their first offensive series, while NV took the ball down the field and scored!!! As for the the MVL being better than the VVL-- Im not saying that either, but ROsemead was clearly the better TEAM, while NV had the better athletes with the biggest mouths. Rosemead just played ball and WHACKED em. So you can call it LUCK, A BAD NIGHT, or whatever else you want. I was at the game and saw a fast Rsemead TEAM, playing a flashy but SOFT NV team. NV players and coaches know and understand football... Rosemead made Plays (you call them lucky) and NV just over-hype. I am from Oregon and was in town for business and came to the game to see what California high school football was like. I think the better team did not win this ballgame. There was better play calling on the red teams sideline for sure. From where I was sitting on the visitors side I couldn't tell who was the head coach on the blue team 'Charter Choke Chargers'? They seemed to be fighting among themselves all night long and definitely got lucky. Overall I enjoyed my experience however would not choose to return to that campus, it looked more like a prison. Good luck to both teams the rest of the season.

Charter Oaks' win over Glendora? No. Although I(like many here) believed the Tartan's lines would control the outcome, I am not surprised that CO's athletes won the game.

Last season Tartan fans had to hear Covina and CO fans wolfing about injuries, suspensions and other issues that led to their losses. They refused to give proper due to Glendora's effort. Tartan fans complained about it.

Football is for kids to stay active and healthy, not sitting around playing video games and on the web all day long and that's it. It is not something that will make them rich it might just provide them with a higher education but then again that is even to only the best ones.

Man, Texas high school ball is really something.It was my first time and what an experience.It's was like going to a big time college game but on a smaller scale. And these guy and GALS are nothing but hardcore footballers. What was really hard to get use but was pretty cool was the officals are all mic'ed on the field so you knew who the penalty was called on and the officials all had numbers on their back.

Besides the obvious,(SCOREBOARD)the 4 ints, 3 fumbles and blocked punt. The clutch conversions of 3rd down plays(unlike N-view who went for it on 4th down more times than I could remember) The 2 bogus pass interference penalties that lead to 2 vikings TD's(not gonna mention the b.s personal foul on a clean, hard hit that made both sides say "oooohhh"
that kept another drive alive) or the constant infliction of punishing hits laid down by 'Mead players.

What is that all about??? Robles single handedly cost NV the game throwing just 1 td and 4 ints (misprinted in trib as 2td/3 int, as usual)!!! Just give the Mead their credit, there only loss of the season is to the Tribs #1 team Los Altos. They beat a good Piedmont Hills team (06 Northern Section CIF finalists) and the Tribs #7 team NV. Last night they gave up 21 points (Int and blocked punt for a TD) and had RHS is a bunch of 3rd and long situations and let them off the hook. NV players in the secondary did not make plays. Give Rosemead a lot of credit they came out and made plays all over the field. This was a good game, hopefully these two teams continue to play each other in the future.

Even if Amat had avoided the defections, and kept all of their stars, they would still lose to the top dogs in the Pac5, the only way they can compete for a CIF crown is to drop their head coach (too immature and inexperienced) and drop down a few divisions. The team is much undersized and lack speed to compete with the likes of Crespi, Notre Dame, Mater Dei, Servite, Mission Viejo, LB Poly and so on and so forth. Amat would do well in the Miramonte League or Del Rey League. So Amat faithful, be prepared for many more losing seasons until they decide to petition CIF to get moved down.

FYI: CO (QB)Allen will learn early what worked for him in the last fews weeks is now working against him. Failed not, because COHS defense will come ready to battle, but will prove by the fourth quarter they are not "battle hard" enough to stop GHS's offensive front line and stout running attack. In the end, GHS will dominate the game clock and the game.

#20 isn't doing to good. From the LA Times blog: For those of you concerned about Glendora's Brent Marteney's well-being, keep your prayers coming. Marteney (No. 20) went down during the second half's opening kickoff. The game was halted for a couple of minutes while he was carried off and taken away in an ambulance. Pasquarella said it doesn't look good. "It looks like he tore a ligament in his knee. It looks pretty bad, so it looks like it could be pretty significant."

That would suck if that's the case. The LA Times has a pretty good recap of the game, and pictures. It must have been a pretty crazy seen, what with close to 5,000 people there.

Nico Barbone was tabbed a 'Weapon of Mass Destruction' early in his sophomore campaign. The guys around the office and I have been referring to him as such for over a year. I can't wait to see Nico this year in the Smudgepot Game. On paper and from reading online he sounds like he is having an outstanding year.

Does anyone know who is holding down the secondary for BOHI? Who has replaced Mike Hooper? Will Nico be the difference in this game for San Dimas? Off the top of my head I believe that this would be the 10th Smudgepot victory in a row should Podley and Co. be able to pull it out. Could someone verify this? It should be a great game with a huge crowd as always. Smudgepot this year is at San Dimas and will take place on Friday, October 5th 7:00pm, Week 5. Fred, any chance of starting a Smudgepot thread?

WOW, it's bad in here but not as bad as i thought. I witnessed two teams playing hard ball last night but i didnt see either team playing dirty, just hard. I also saw the team who stepped up in the end win the game. Dwelling on the past only leads to stress which only leads to anger. I was present to one hell of a game last night and believe it or not, both teams needed it to happen this way. Co needed something to build on and glendora needed to be knocked down early on. That is not a rip, they will look back when they win their next tough one and realize that in some strange way this actually helped. Any news on #20, he had a great run for six.

Im an alumni of Northview. I saw the game against rsemeadand i can tell u somthin. Theres no way and heck that rosemead is better than northview. It looked like the vikes came out flat and thought they were gunna roll on them. But somthing that stuck out to me was the heart that i saw that came from these 2 kids. # 2 Jason knowls and #16 oscar robles. Both of these kids were getting pounded play after play because the line was playing like crap. Knowls did all he can do and tried to turn bad situations in to good ones. And for robles want to talk about a warrior. hit after hit was getting nailed even when he didnt pass you can see him on the floor he looked like he was in pain through out the whole game. Although he did throw 2 or 3 interceptions he also threw 3 touchdowns. This kid is still one of the best qbs in the valley and one of the toughest 2. As to go for the rest of the team, take some notes on robles and knowls and play with emotion you guys were dead out there. Defense step up and o line step up. The skill guys are there but they need help. I was dissapointed with the effort and you guys better step up next week. you guys are not a power house team yet ok. You cant just show up and when.And i hopr the coaches get you ready for next week.

In 2003 mid season coach DiFiori changed his offense to the deleware wing and cranked out 5 straight wins. This is a great offence if you have the runners to do it and that year they did. Amat ran it to perfection. It propelled Amat into the second round of the play offs against Los Alamitos and almost beat them. I never understood why they went away from an offence that is obviously very successful. The offense that coach Verti currently runs in very one dimensional and I have stood by that statement watching the games for the last 4 years he has been running the offense. I'm very happy that Amat got their first win last night, but the outlook needs to change. Amat has the runners this year to run the Delaware wing. I think it would optimize the efficincy of this offense and may put them in a better position to put points on the board. This is purely an opinion, but i sincerely believe the wing-t offnse could be run to success by this years team...anyone else have any thoughts about this? how about you Fred?

Your right, CO was flagged for a block below the waist. Plaid lad, if your talking about CO's smaller DB's going low on your bigger RB's that is totally legal. I have never been a fan of it but size will dictate the way one will tackle a bigger guy with a full head of steam.

My player of the year nomination is Kanaan Snowden. This kid did everything a player is asked to do. Running, tackling, punting, passing. Kanaan is was one of the most impressive players I have seen in years. a pure weapon. I will even give him a nickname.'WMD' All the talk about Mcbride and Barbone is nice but those kids dont have the impact of Kanaan. Understand,I am a Glendora 'button wearer'. Kanaan has my vote.

By rule a chop block has to involve two teamates...this did not happen last night. At the line of scrimmage it is legal to block below the waist. Tartans had a pass interfernce against them on the 1st play of the game and a big punt return called back because of a illegal block that may or may not have been there. Let's call it what the game was....probably the two best defenses around and two teams that need to "tweak" the offense and play calling. These two teams will be playing in the post season.

I also saw the replay last night and was even more disgusted with the officials. CO was called for a chop block. That game was so one sided in bad calls it's not even funny. CO should get two victories for last night, one against the tartans and one against the officials. Also, if your suggesting that the CO kid running full speed and splitting two blockers and hurting that kid your nuts. I could bring up the number of the kid who totally missed that block but I'm sure he feel's horrible that happened. It does sound like your dancing around the defeat a little bit. It was a good battle the kids fought on both sides, last year CO lost the same type of game.

I wouldn't be too hard on Pasquarella. He's a great football coach who has won where ever he's been. In the 80s, he turned a horrible Covina team into league champs and basically built the success that Dick Sheehan and now Darryl Thomas have maintained. He then built Ayala from scratch into a divisional power. He won at Damien and has turned around Glendora from a team that was near the bottom of the league to a unit that now at least competes for the leagu title and makes the playoffs every year.
The thing I've learned about the Farrars is never to doubt them. I can remember how they got pounded my Los Altos, losing 35-7, during the league season in 2000, then nearly pulling the upset against the same LA team in the D-VII final.
Last night's game was like Pasquarella said, just two really good teams going at it. It was very similar to last year, just a reverse ending with Charter Oak putting together the winning drive at the end.

How does CO win ths game with undersized kids and lack of depth for four qtrs.....Coaching? I mean come on, that last drive started on the twenty and they drove to glendoras 30 on a couple of short passes and just plain running the ball. It looked to me like glendora was thinking that CO was going to be happy with a tie. I mean what was glendora thinking, CO is going to run a sweep from the thirty with 30 seconds left. Once again we see that Lou Farrar & co. won't settle for kissing thier sister in a close game. There was also talk of the "little People" staff writers fred & steve gave the kids plenty of motivation for calling them small and undersized and unable to hold up with the big tartans. Kind of funny coming from those giants.

I would have to agree with you at this point.

McBride and Barbone are just two very special kids. They come to play every week and every down.

I went to watch Barbone play last night. Truly an impressive showing of size, speed and strength!

What's wrong with SEM ? Not the year expected ? Those who know about this program know just what happened !!! Escamilla is not URIAS, that's what happened.. You loose a coach of that caliber and it will have a huge impact on your program. We should have seen this coming, does anyone have another reason why thi is happening ? NO, well, then thanks to the head midget (princepal) over at SEM. THE RECORD SPEAKS FOR IT, URIAS = WINS.

CO v. GHS , Missed the game, but herd it was the Time Warner "Game of the Week". If so can anyone tell me what time and channel it will be on?

Three things that struck me at the CO / Glendora Game:

1.CO is their own worst enemy. Woe betide the team that has to face them when they play error free football.
2.The Chargers need to open up their offense and turn Chris Allen loose. Period.
3.As formidable as the Tartans appeared, they will need to be a lot better at taking advantage of what “fate” hands them during a game and turning it into points.

I would also say both teams need to make some big improvements in their special teams. Kicking for the Tarts and the Chargers was anything but special.

i didnt go to the game last night, but 5 are 6 tds where scored on defence and special teams. 85 points is alot tho. my nephews play on the teams he said they where not trying to run the score up like that. in the 4th quarter alot of the jv players where in the game on offence and defence. check it out. The difference between a Coach Farrar team and a Paskie team can be summed up in this paragraph.

Coach Farrar is a great coach. While Paskie is just a one and done good coach. And until he can prove us wrong that statement will never change.The whole story lies in that last drive between Glendora and Charter Oak and what a glaring difference between Farrar and Paskie.

Do you think you guys are really trying to make a statement by running up the score against a weaker foe? If you guys are releshing in your victory by kicking a team when they are down by pouring it on only shows a lack of sportsmanship, class and shame. Crutch you need to take sportsmanship 101 because although you may have won the game, you certainly have lost all your credability and respect by the coaching community.

Duarte didnt run up the score...they only scored 14 after the half. Duarte could have EASILY scored 100 last night. They started slowing it down in the 2nd Quarter. They made every play, great catches, diving, over the shoulder, good blocks, big runs. Everything worked for them. Nothing worked for Ganesha, they quit 8 minutes in.

You must still be bitter from losing to LA, CO and Wilson all those years when you had exceptional talent at Pomona. Here's a heads up coach, when yu drop 44 in the 1st qtr we shouldn't see the same name scoring early and then scoring 2 of your final 3tds in the box scores. At some point, any man who has any worth in life will think about the kids on the other team. I love KARMA and when it strikes you once again, "you have yet to win the big one" I will be the first one to cheer.

I have now seen three running backs that you advertised back in August. McBride, Gilmore and Barbone..

I thought the performance of McBride against Rosemead was the best single game I have seen, but Barbone last night was incredible! The amount of coverage all over the football field was the single best performance I have seen from a RB in the SGV for a long time.

If it wasn’t for three TD’s called back, the kid would have 350+ with six td’s. One of the three called back was a drive play. The D stuck him at the line, kept his balance, bounced back, side step right, two more lateral moves that took the d end wacky and gone like a bullet shot out of a gun! Very talented young man at this stage of his game. This team is very good for a smaller school. Hats off to the entire unit, they play well together.

I’m off to Duarte next week to watch Harris. Hope it exciting as last night!

Isaac Tucker rushes 27 for 267 yards and 5 tds! I think he should be up for player of the week honors! I think if WC beats Rancho the Bulldogs will truly be a force to be reckoned with, at least a top ten team.

It's a good thing you guys didn't have that 2 minute drill this week. I was curious to hear your 5 reasons why Glendora would win, and it seemed like you were leaning towards a blowout. I was very pleased with the outcome but didn't predict it ending that way. Step up to the plate and tell me what those 5 reasons were.

Seeing the Damien Spartans battle a well coached Los Altos team was painful. Pertusati as the #1 rated QB in the SGV was so off base as to call into question the whole ranking system. He is a very good athlete and strong cpmpetitor but a varsity QB he is not. At least not yet. He doesn't understand defenses. But it's not his fault he goes to a gun battle with a knife in hand and the guts of a warrior. Morrison is either one of two things: the luckiest man alive because of an endless amount of yearly talent or the poorest evaluator of coaching talent on the high school scene. Damien easily has some of the biggest linemen around and consistently has some of the valley's best athletes in Mamahan, Herrera, Schmitz, Mendrum, Rabe, Miller, Brown, Johnson, Travis, Harper, Turner ect. ect. ect. ALL DIV I talent yet he saddles them with poor inexperienced coaches who aren't varsity material . Anyone disagrees only has to see the second half of SJB and LA games to come to that conclusion. No adjustments. Very few stunts and no leadership on either the offfense or defense make for a tired and ocnfused second half team. Name the leaders?. Best of luck to all the Spartans. They play with heart and desire but their lack of football IQ and position coaching at the lower levels has finally been exposed.

I think a large portion of the SGValley, including myself, forgot that the Charter Oak Chargers were the 2006 CIFSS Southwest Division runner-up Champions last season and returned many starters from that team.
The O & D line sure "stepped it up" tonite and defended Chargers Stadium.
I do believe I watched a much more capable Tartan team than years past and overall was impressed by the way both teams played.

I didn't say McBride was the best running back period...I said he is the best I'VE ever seen, personally. That's my observation...my personal opinion. I've only been watching HS football for about 15 years, most of which has been here in the SGV but the things he does are special...things I've never seen anyone do before.

I've never seen a kid with his combination of speed and power. He physically punished Damien players tonight, like they had done something wrong. If you were there tonight answer this question for me...how many green helmets flew off onto the turf during the game? Just off the top of my head, I remember FOUR separate times tonight he hit guys so hard that their lids flew off! Who does that? And his speed...he outran every player on that field tonight (including #2 for Damien who is a STUD!) on his "I think I'll fumble the ball, run backwards 30 yards, cut up field and outrun all 21 other guys on the field to the endzone" play.

But if you say there are better then please...tell me who. I love football and want to see future stars. Please enlighten me as to who I can go see who is a bigger thrill to watch than this kid.

This kid is the real deal. I was not convinced of all of the hype about this kid. I could not have been more wrong. He is the strongest running back that I have seen at the HS level. He was injured before half time. Came back on the field and dominated the game. He took some of the hardest hits that you can take and moved the ball foward for extra yards. HE will be a starting running back at a D1 school next year if he has the grades. My hat is off to Greg gano and Co. for the game plan after being handled in the first Qtr. Los Altos you have a special player in this kid keep him healthy. Bishop Amat fans you have no idea what you are missing out on. McBride is the next Barry Sanders.

1) How good does the Miramonte League look with LA, CA, DR...league should be scary!

2) I think the statements made tonight about the GHS fans beating their own kids have some truth. Kids read this blog and when you're 16, 17 yrs old, you let this stuff get to your head. These kids thought they were going to CRUSH Charter Oak...guess not. Gentlemen, this blog is for us old washed up ex-football players...not for you.

3) McBride is the best high school running back I have ever personally seen (Bryce I hope you're not reading this!). All this talk about how he hadn't faced a real defense yet and his yards came against subpar teams is a load of bull. Rosemead's good...ask Northview. LB Wilson is no slouch...ask Los Alamitos. No one can come on here and say Damien is a poor opponent. Give the kid his credit! Oh by the way...in case you hadn't heard...he played 3 quarters tonight. Had a medical issue the entire 3rd quarter and still broke 200 and munched 3 TDs!

Damiens O-line and D-line was huge definitely dominated the ball in the first half but McBride is no doubt the real deal and took the game into his own hands, even recovering his own fumble and running to the opposite side of the field for the score what the heck ,did you see that? 219 yards it seemed more like 300 to me.

Joe Colt, with all due respect you are wrong, this is why you have to see these teams in person to make an ACCURATE assesment. Make no mistake Damien IS good. They are BIG, and athletic. Speed and size, they would PUMMELL most SGV teams, bad. I say their game with Glendora will be a nailbiter, I would give it to Damien, Damien is better. Trust me, they probably just had a slow start like South Hills.

Glendora would have to screw up pretty badly for CO to have even the slightest chance. I don't see that happening with this well oiled Tartan machine. I think QB Allen will be saked at least 4 times. Look for Tartan D to outscore the Chargers.

Rosemead hit Northview hard all night long. Maybe the Tribune can show some love finally. That Los Altos loss was tough but Los Altos is the real deal especially the defense. GO PANTHERS!

Great point. Last year's game at OUR field was almost identical with the reverse outcome. This year, CO's home turf may have given them that edge in a very close game. I predicted a strong Tartan victory (not that crazy 50-6 stuff, but I thought we'd be a 2 TD winner. I was obviously wrong and the CO D played about equal with our D. It was a matter of who's O would clutch up. 7-7 tie since early in the game, we finally get a great drive going (from our 10 to their 25) but have to settle for a FG try from 42. It just didn't work out. It looked like CO was content to run the clock down and just try and get into FG range or take the tie. The trick play (HB pass) worked. The corner bit and CO got the trophy back. Great job Chargers, it was a tough fought game on both sides. Both teams have some things to work on, but like JFR said, we can learn from this and still have a steller season. They did last year. Heads up, chin straps on, and focus on West Ranch. God's speed to Martiney (sp) #20 who was hurt. He was having a great game too. Get well son, your attitude was encouraging.

Los Altos looked pretty good tonite in our loss 20-31. They shut us down the second half. They even played a quarter without their star running back. You were right when you said those little guys had some heart. They can really play.

Congrats Los Altos. WOW ARROYO GOT WHACKED !!! SEM another loss ... WHAT HAPPENED ?

Damien exposed some real weakness in LA special teams play, getting great field position on kick-off and punt returns and then running back a 96 yarder for a score which resulted in a 17-7 Spartan lead. LA adjusted, started dropping the kick-off at around the 30-35 and giving the D the chance to stop Damiens O.

Once that was settled, Mahumb-McBride did his thing, a few timely screen passes and some hand-offs to Seanez and Martinez, with an end around to Rodriguez along with a single pass to him and LA overcame both the 17-7 deficit and a 10-0 deficit to notch a 31-20 victory.

Note, Damien dominated in size, but most of the hugh Spartan line looked pretty beat up at the end of the game.

Joe Colt, YOUR SURPRISED ? How do you think Huskie fans were feeling ? However we realize you wont win by playing sloppy and getting too many penalties. Those Teams were'nt better than us but you can't win playing the way we did.
We do have very good talent and we'll win alot this year. Trust me on this one though, Coach Bogan will not tolerate any egos disrupting his gameplan and from my perspective its a non- issue. The players are finding their nitch. Kucklinsky,Parham,Dean,Wells,Umodu,Bowden and many others all had great games tonight and the score almost came close to showing it.

First of all, I hope #20 is ok but I fear his season is over. I was twenty yards away and it happened so fast and so hard that you knew the outcome was going to be bad.
Second, you fans and parents created such a bad situation for these kids with your non-stop babbling about this team way to early. What league is looking the toughest now. This is a rebuilding year for CO who's little guys up front won the battle on both sides of the ball. I'm not going to rip on certain kids but lack of experience at key positions showed. It is still early and the young men will learn from it, better sooner than later. I know it sucks losing to CO but they lost to you last year and grew from it.

What can I say, pretty sloppy game on both sides. The score should have easily been 40-7. Amat's secondary getting about 5 picks against their sophomore QB. Prieto looked good but tired since taking the load off Wagner. Saw Austin in crutches and Wagner suited up but did not play. Other than that, we looked so and so against a mediocre RC team. I cannot see how this team will fare against ND, Crespi and Carson. We don't have much size nor speed, especially with Wagner and Austin out.

Ontario is bigger on both sides of the ball and SD oline is going to have to really play up! If they spring the holes then I think SD speed will prevail. If not this game will be won in the trenches! Maybe the bigger school gets the smaller school. I hope not, but Ontario is pretty good size.

I think the Damien game is won in the trenches too! Damien is really big up front and again if LA oline does the job Speed goes along way.

I used to be in direct sales, a "one call close" job, and a big part of my ability to relate to people, was understanding how important our own high school experiences were. Many times I was able to establish some significant "common ground" by relating some HS experiences and having someone else relate a few of their own.

I understand good natured rivalry and poking fun at one another, but from my experience, outright insulting another mans high school is akin to insulting his favorite beer, president or dog. (Some men accept criticism of their spouses more readily than they accept criticism of their HS! LOL).

Having said that, I personally will refrain from anything other than some good-natured ribbing and and healthy conversation about the topics we discuss here. Passion for "our teams" is evident, but putting yourself in the other mans shoes, understanding that he too has pride, passion and great memories of HS experiences, serves to remind us all that it is afterall, all about helping the current students get a measure of what we already have.

Except if you support Charter Oak, then everything I just said goes out the window! LOL!

We ll have to say great job to the people who pick the game of the week, they really got it right this time.

Over the past few years the markee players have either been on L.A. or Damien and last years game was pretty dam good, I mean both of these programs bring a better crowd and both of these teams have better fans.

Come on we all remember last season when all you Tartan fans were ready to fight each other once you folks get close to league and the wheels start to come off you crabs turn on each other and the staff.

One thing about Gano and crew no one is ever calling for his head, and when they loose its usually to a better team.

One last idea why not have an open date on the calender and lets have # 1 play #2 in the valley every year.

Walnut just missed last nite getting our first win over Covina. I did not expect us to win but keeping it close with playing a bunch of Sophmore and Juniors shows a bright side of things to come for the Mustangs next year and the following year. We are on our way back so look for our QB Austin Cooper to be the talk of the SGV soon...this is a star that will be in full bloom in a couple of years....we may go 1-9 or 0-10 this year but look for us to improve dramaticly in the next year or two. There is no doubt in my mind that the reason for their success is a lack of a true superstar and a well balanced attack with solid players at all positions.

To win at any level you need to be balanced,

Solid defense

Solid special teams

Solid kicking game

Solid passing scheme with capable receivers and two decent QB's

Solid running game with a long yardage sprinter and a short yardage bull

Solid O line because nothing good happens offensively without the 5 big uglies up front, Period...

What does a marquee player offer you?

If your egos can handle it then its great, but if not your doomed.

I beleive South Hills fell into this trap, when I heard they had 3 QB's that could start anywhere in the valley I said "Uh oh", that means 3 dads who are used to their kids being #1... No way this works well.

Then when I heard Wells was transferring I knew this was bad, I know some of the dads over there and their kids have to be #1 or they will wreak havoc behind the scenes.

I wont mention any names but the chemistry went to hell once that kid came aboard, it wasnt his fault but the players there and their fathers were not happy... Thats a fact

It is what it is...GHS and DR will perform well because they have balanced talent and are truly a "Team"...

One other thing Joe, do you think part of the Glendora and DR receipe for success might be the fact that you won't find "A" marquee player, but a team of well balanced skilled players in every position. This would make it extremely difficult for opponents to take advantage of weakness on the field. There isn't any. I hear it over and over again on the blog, but these teams do play like a well oiled machine. Interesting to see which of these teams, if any, will run the table. Both can do it!

Good post Joe, with a very honest and logical opinion. I would agree with you regarding Glendora and DR being SGV's best two solid programs at this time. I saw both DR and Glendora play. These teams are truly light years ahead of every program. No flaws, allstars at every position.

Your young Colts will gain great experience early and do just find during league. I have already seen substantial improvement in there last game (Victory!!)

Agreed on many levels, I believe that the only solid teams we have in this area are GHS and Diamond Ranch.

Etiwanda was a decent test for the Tartans but only time will tell, playoffs are really going to tell us where they stand.

As far as Diamond Ranch they have already proven alot and in a short period of time, if you can hang with a "Farm" like Edison then you are for real. Beat Chino Hills and you have my attention, DR didnt just beat them but embarressed them.

As you know DR is the #1 in my opinion, LA, SH, CO etc arent as good as advertised.

Speaking of South Hills what in the world happened over there? Politics and egos I am sure. All that talent and they are going to implode because of playing time, jealousies etc... Mark my words on this.

Amat? I love them and they represent us in D1 as the SGV's best, Verti tries but the guys who hired him without doubt made an error, he wasnt ready or mature enough for the gig.

and as for my beloved Colts, well you know the story there. A truly great program every 7 to 10 years, but hey every kid on the team lives within the boundries and its a smaller school than most.

Gotta give coach Thomas props for what he accomplishes, he is truly a good man.

Joe Colt, I actually thought Bishop Amat out played Los Osos, and gave it away in the second half with silly mistakes. And nobody in this area would beat Orange Lutheran or Hart. I've seen Charter Oak, San Dimas, Northview, Arroyo, San Dimas and can honestly say I don't think any of them could beat Bishop Amat. But Charter Oak is iffy, so I left them ranked ahead of the 0-3 Lancers. I will have a better opinion after watching Los Altos-Damien and Glendora next week as to how they would do against the Big Boys in blue.

Sometimes I'm glad Edgewood folded, this way I can't be accused of playing favorites.

What's wrong with Los Altos, the Trib's top-ranked team. They haven't been on the cover yet, and neither has Damien. We shot Glendora on the cover when they beat Covina, and Charter Oak was the video game of the week last week. You have to admit, these are two great games, and it's my job to keep the coverage balanced. Next week, Glendora will be on Friday's cover page from Thursday's game against West Ranch. And Glendora-Charter Oak is still going on the front page, we just won't have art of it.
