POSTGAME ... Saturday Morning Quarterback ...Top-ranked Los Altos goes down, Duarte-Gladstone ends in brawl

While looking at the argument some people have posted in regards to the talent Damien has, the fact stands that none of them have major D1 potential. Don't get me wrong, there are players with great athletic ability. Unfortunately, great athletic ability doesn't constitute great football players. Rabe is very good "high school" player who committed to Oregon, yet he rated a two or three star overall. McMahon has great speed just like 10,000 other high school players across the country and he will be lucky to hear from a Nevada or New Mexico State. Herrera is another one with great speed at receiver but he doesn't carry a 6'4'' frame running 4.38. These kids are good for what they are doing know. Miller was getting looked at by some programs but struggles with extra points now and again. And D.Harper is not an argument...by all means congrats to him but being asked to come to school and walk on the team doesn't mean he amazing. USC filled a roster spot with just like they did with South Hill's Justin Hart two years ago. He will be buried on that depth chart and will get against the Idahos of the NCAA when SC is up by 30. "God's gift to the world" Will Harris (Charter Oak) hasn't even played and why? Oh yeah he's not that good. He's gonna sit behind Taylor Mays and Kevin Ellison until they're gone and by then SC will have some freshman with twice the talent that he does. While I'll agree that Damien's coaching is sub-par at best (excluding Carroll considering that the defense is the only thing keeping their season alive), these kids aren't going to be stars any place else other then where they are. The SGV produces one or two kids at most that are really capable of a D1 scholarship, and no the WAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt conferences don't count (no disrespect to Ian Johnson. The Haydens, Minor, and McClutcheons aren't out here anymore. I can't remember a big time recruit coming out if the SGV since Donnie McClesky (Amat) and even he went sorry ass Cal that didn't start getting good until he was an upperclassman. And I know there are going to be names like Bryan and Jeremy Patton thrown at me but c'mon. Jeremy hasn't done anything significant at all and Bryan's only memorable highlight will be his pick off of John David Booty while splitting time on the field. I haven't heard anything from Daniel Drayton (Los Altos) either. Sedrick Ellis and Chris McFoy (Chino) have had decent college careers at SC and everyone was drooling over them when they played out here. The SGV doesn't have the LB Poly, Mater Dei, Hart, Valencia, St. Bonaventure's of the world. Those teams come here to kick our asses for a confidence boost. You have to go out west for the amazing talent or go out to Norco and Orange County for the four and five star prospects. The SGV is stuck in the middle and that is exactly where most of these kid's talent lies in comparison to the rest of the state...in the middle.

Read the same article in the Trib about D Ranch. All the coach said was in reference to scheduling tops teams for non league games to test themselves, similar to what we do . He mentioned he would like to schedule AMAT . I don't see where you should take that in a negative manner after all he is condidering us still one of the top teams unlike alot of other schools who don't have the b_lls to schedule us even though we are thing of the past with no hope in sight.

Hey chun-thee.......we don't make the calls here on the blog. You know that. Our admin has heard the questions about who we are going to play in the preseason. We don't go whining to them at every game.

I think we have two openings next year. I'm pretty sure Temescal and LB Jordan will be off the schedule. Next year we will be even stronger, and you weaker...so maybe they were just looking for the right time to schedule your dumb asses. Like a skilled boxer waiting for his chance, and striking at just the right moment.

The problem with Damien lies on the lower levels, at this point in time. The coaching is, and has been, sub-par for several years. The quality of athletes has allowed this fact to go unnoticed for quite some time, but the reality has surfaced and is obvious to anyone who follows the Spartans regularly.

Once the varsity years arrive, primarily Junior and Senior years, the players are not prepared for the advanced speed of the game. This years O-line is good sized, but what is size without quick feet?

The secondary is gets burned more frequently than my morning toast, and the defense's pursuit to the ball seems to be in slow motion.

Add these shortcomings to the crappy play calling from the sidelines, and you've got mediocrity.

I wrote a few weeks back that this year's Damien squad is a .500 team, not much more than that. This forecast speaks to their program's problems, and their current level of play.

I agree with most of your post but, you are way off the mark stating that any one on this years JV team belongs on the Varsity roster at Damien let alone play at that level. Their last game on Thursday against Charter Oak. They had to get a saftey to win over a team that cannot get out of there own way. That is a bad 0 and 4 team. A coaching staff calling the wrong plays at the wrong time. I would rather have a kid play at the JV level then sit at the varsity level. You should be happy your son is where he is. Damien will have a new look in two weeks. I can't promise a new play book but, changes are being made for the better.

Just speaking the truth about the top 10. I am not a Amat faithful at all but it does make sense that they beat RC and WC got beat up. Also truth is Amat will not make the CIF playoffs again, there is no way they beat Crespi and there is no way they beat ND. As far as the locals playing Amat sure anything can happen and a SH or LA could win a game against them but year in and year out they play some heavy hitters and maybe it is time to move them down..they are not what they used to be and will find that out again come league play, heck Carson may take them out......It is a little of coaching and it is talent base and Amat has got to face facts they cannot hang with the big boys anymore and should come down and play there SGV counter parts......

Truth Be Told. You have a good point about Amat. I have no problem with them being #1 even with losses. They are playing TOUGH teams to get ready for their BRUTAL league. I would love to see them play Glendora, Damien, Los Altos, and Charter Oak all in pre season. That would be a heck of a pre season, and keep pounding Rancho. Then the debate would be over. They would be #1 unless they lose to a local team. Until they lose to a local team, I say put them #1. I'm sold.

Here's a question for the Amat faithfuless. Name 3 teams in the SGV that are potentially your peers. Say you consider yourself a 10 on a 1 to 10 scale. Rate all the SGV teams and what do you get? Not one other 10. Damien is probably a 7 at best. Los Altos and Charter Oak are maybe as well, so how can you be the King of the SGV? Your peers are St. Bonny, Servite, Mater Dei, Rancho Margarita, Norco, Loyola ect. Kings operate on a larger scale don't they? So can Amat please stop with the "we're the king of the sgv" comments. Heart is great to have, but it doesn't mean jack sh!+, if you don't have the skills to go with it. You can the biggest heart and the best of intentions, but if the skills aren't there, it just doesn't matter. Your best athletes should be on the field, on both sides of the ball, at all times, baring any injury. There seems to be a common thread that most of these coaches don't/won't play the best player for the job. Damien fans, LA fans, Amat fans, CO fans and SH fans all complain of this. Coaches get too caught up in their own agendas. Remember coaches, its not about you just like its not about any one player. Its about what the TEAM needs most at the present time to be successful in the current season. A coach is a teacher and that is what should be taught.

To the bloggers who keep talking about Marcus Wiliams like he has or did or would have contributed to Damien's success get a grip. He was hurt all of last year except a few games. Never was a factor. In fact Chris Marine was Damien's horse and game MVP on a couple occassions. Williams never was a factor. He's a hard worker but he's had a rash of injuries that have left him on the sidelines 75% of the time. I find it incredible this talk about missing one player and great teams deal with that reality. Imagine Damien without Pertusati. Glendora without Kalsuny. Los Altos without Bryce. And so forth. They are major loses. Damien was lucky to get a tie. Damien size and speed alwyas keeps them in games when their coaching fails them. They are woefully undercoached and poorly conditioned. It's taken Schmitz and Rabe 4 years to get in shape. Morrisson does everything for that team but carry water. As big and strong as Damien is and with their speed they should be undefeated. No RB coach,no QB coach, no WR coach, no TE coach, no strenght coach,no linebacker coach. Morrison does offense, Carroll does defense and that it. Coach Bubba is all heart and work ethic and Coach Hile does what he can. SBut Damien is simply an undermanned and under developed staff. And that mess starts at the lower levels. Rabe DE, Schmitz Ol,Herrera WR,Miller K, Betance P,McMahon S,Salter DT are all potential DI prospects. That's 7 on one team! Add Mendrun U, Travis WR, Luiten DL,Walsh DE and DeLaTorre OL and Harper CB@USC from last year's team and well that's alot of ballers on 1 team. Best of luck to Morrison. No way he's a .500 coach playing Div6 teams and Ayala and DB for the last 5 years, but he is. A Glendora blowout of the Spartans will have the Alumni forgetting last year's heroics. Hope Coach Carroll comes thru for Morrison like he did last year at this time and runs the table roughing people up. Not a hater but is anyone else not impressed with Damien's consistent size advantage? Morrison start bringing up the biggest, fastest, meanset most skilled JV players immediately. I count 7 that are qualified. Go Spartans!

My opinion is that Ayala will likely make a mad dash at the CIF big dance also.

But then I'm not kicking DB to the curb either.

Pre-season winning builds confidence as you suggested, and as we all enter league play.....we are glad you (DB) are feeling it this year.

Several strong teams in the Sierra League will definitely make things interesting in 2007.

FYI: There are no "IF's" in football or any other sport.

Yes Randy i agree with you too! Getting Coach Martin is a true blessing and i dont think players or parents could be happier with the results thusfar being that we are so early in the season. Not getting Martin would have been like "The one who got away"..lol

The Brahmas have GREATLY improved, anyone who follows the Sierra League knows this. They play better offense than they do defense, but they have shown some fight we have haven't seen in a few years. The core group are juniors, they will be back...

They had the ball and were driving in the 4th qtr down by 2 TD's against Temescal Cyn (a D2 semi-finalist who killed them 42-3 in '06)....they were down 14-3 at half against LB Jordan (D1), turned it around closed it to 17-16, went for 2 pts on the conversion but wound one one play short of beating them (we got whooped by a similiar playoff bound Locke team from City section in '06).....and then there was Troy, that Coleman kid is the sh*t! We had them on the ropes, we had it in our grasps! Without Coleman they drop off the map! Troy was also a semi-finalist team last yr in thier division.

We're close, and getting closer....this week is the 'bye', they are 2-3 going into league now, but showing life that wasn't there the last 3 or 4 years...

Coach Martin has those boys moving forward, making progress and getting better each week.....I'm not saying they are gonna win league, hell theres a good chance they won't even make the playoffs, but they are on the warpath, they are on the move, they will need to be DEALT with......And I know EVERYONE in those stands couldn't be prouder of what we are seeing.........Keep Bringing It Brahmas!!!!!!!

It's funny how LA fans come on here and give their expert advise on how their team should have won. You start playing decent teams like SF expect to lose and then you start pointing fingers. It doesn't matter if you have Dan Marino at QB or not, your team would lose when faced with above average competition. Remember opposing teams will stack the box, stop the run, force the pass (nonexistent) and bingo against your one dimensional offense.....there is no balance! Let's hope Mahamud or whatever his muslim name is doesn't get hurt trying to carry his team every week.

He knew after Spring ball who he should go with, then it would appear there was some recruiting done and now they see that their recruit is not getting it done. Smart Gano is, how flexible is he is the question. Even if he platoons the QBs between the two seniors-that would be a better plan of action than what he has going now. You make some good points. The first of which is that there is a major problem at the QB position. I will not insult the young man. I will only say that it is obvious to everyone that he is not getting the job done. I will use the Chicago Bears as an example. They went to the big dance last year with their QB. This season he was not getting it done and after a few games he was benched. Change can be a good thing. Lets bring it down to the local HS level, with no disrespect to the schools mentioned. South Hills made a QB change this year and is now reaping the benefits from it. Amat has been steadfast on their chosen QBs each of the last 2 years and has suffered because of it and their unwillingness to change overall. I hope Gano doesn't fall into the same trap.

Attention CO... If you can't block on the o-line it does not make any sense to have your receivers running 10-15 yard routes! Come on! Common sense would tell you to shorten up your routes. Try rolling your QB out instead of tacking sacks or grounding penalties. I know I'm a Monday morning quarterback, but come on....you get the ball back with time on the clock and you can't get any positive yards because of one defensive end (#95). I'll give this, that kid is a stud!

And for all those who say if Kanan played it would have been a different outcome....NO SH%T? AS someone stated in an earlier post, good team find a way to play with what they have. He would have made a difference, but I'm not so sure the score would have been any different. Damien fields a good tough football team and I wish you luck the rest of the year.

To all you monday morn Qbers, its clear that L.A. is having some issues at the top spot o.k. now we know this but show some intellect and a little class.

Calling kids out by name is a tough thing to do especially if your not leaving your name.
Last years kid had one hell of a ride and two grat years to enjoy it.

As far as I can see he is the only one of Gano's Qber's to play a down in a four year university, at that position and he's only a freshmen,

So its easy to see that all these kids at Los Altos have a tough act to follow.

The journey is the key here the, little Qber from last year had a cannon but was too short for Amats greatness so they said thank you to the school and quietly departed and never looked back.

But please remember the kid was a two year starter at AMAT, he wasnt a bench warmer or a kid who played a different position and then transferred, he flat out started as a freshman and as a sophmore, that is the answer here, you need to go with a kid who has started someplace.

Now back to the point the Los Altos loss is not the players fault directly, it is directly related to strength of schedule its that simple you cannot go into this type of game after Damien and thier size and expect to come out healthy, this is a scheduling issue.

Damien should be the first game on the schedule every year, not a cupcake like Rosemead, "sorry to any panthers out there", the cream puffs and the tripe should be after the Damien but before the St Frances game thats plain and simple.

I am not calling anyone out here all im saying is broken legs and kids being carried out is not a heart issue or a toughness issue these kids are the toughest around, its fatigue and not enough rest between title fights, not to mention the strength of the Miramonte league, if your going to play this tough of a schedule you need a lot more depth.

Stop calling kids out unless your going to put your name on this post, and from what I see 4 titles and 5 straight appearance's many playoff wins and several kids playing at the next level hey lets see what happens next, I know we all want success for our team and kids but lets give these guys some respect and some space.

All you CO fans stoping complaining about if Snowden would've played the outcome would've been different. A good teams learns how to cope when players go down plus u people are acting as if damien hasnt loss anyone. They lost Marcus Williams who had a pretty productive season last year and would of had a even beter one this year.

I think the big problem is the QB can't do that consistantly. I also agree that he is not the one for the job in this offense. He did seem to be shaken and lacking confidence. All the balls thrown were high and exposed the receivers to big hits. The offense that coach runs needs a much more athletic QB. Having seen all the QBs available this year and with no disrespect to any, 2 would seem to be the logical choice. Also, there needs to be a deep threat out there that can stretch the field. St. Francis put 8-9# in the box at times and dared LA to throw. Gano is a smart coach and I have faith that he will make the changes to the offense to give them the best chance to win.

tough loss LA but its fine its one of those learning exp. in a suprisingly hostile enviorment. There are bigger issues at hand and this loss isnt the end all. Every week is a learning expierience, the trick is to LEARN!!!!! You all played hard and fought till the end, im sure that the coaches saw some things that they can do better as well. OKAY now that i said that here are some pointers, i just finished watching the highlight tape (and I was at the game), from where i was sitting i couldnt see when 84 caught those two balls but seeing what he did after it amazes as to why he doesnt get the ball more, with a passing game that is practically naught, it seems as though the TE with good hands is a perfect place to go even if he is split out wide (have you seen the chargers?) (or the Browns?), to comment on the reverse that some one brought up, yes ur right a reverse to the TE isnt common but i dont have a problem handing it off to that guy with his pads facing NORTH SOUTH, did you guys see how he dragged the pile and ran over Number 4?, adjustments need to be made and attitudes need to change its a long season and i wish the best to LA, wont be able to cath this weeks game but i will see you at HOMECOMING. After watching film on you this year....Tamayo is too short, he is not a threat in or out of the pocket and is not a playmaker. If you decide to stay with him, it won't matter how well Bryce plays. In the end, Tamayo will cost you games, the playoffs and your season. Bryce is great, but he cant always save the day. Thanks in advance for exposing your weakness and for giving the league to us this year.

I feel your pain brother and was there until Bogan made the necessary change at Quarterback and truly believe now we have the right players in the right position to win.

Bottom line: Teams like us (South Hills) and Los Altos we have no excuses because we have the right skill positions and linemen so my point is if and when we fail the coaches are obviously making poor decisions the difference is Bogan put his ego aside and is adjusting his scheme to his players that is why we have won the last couple of weeks and Gano will instead fail because he will refuse to adjust his philosophy.

Oh and Skrid PLAID LAD is right! Make no excuses for Charter Oak tying last night. From what I can tell you got beat upfront which means same old story that is already old news. Charter Oak is going nowhere this year because they do not have an Offensive Line!

Snowden was a factor in the COHS victory over GHS. He proved to be the winning component in a great game that mirrored equals...until the final seconds of the game.

As interesting and exciting as he was to watch...he did not show, place, or win, against the Damien game.

Hence, he was a non-factor in the teams production. Why he did not play?......Only Big Lou and boys can answer that one. If injured and/or sore due to our match-up last week...so be it...I hope he recovers soon to show-case his talents.

To those that continue to bang about his absence...for the sake of creating a "what if theory"...please burn your psych-books.

COHS played as hard as expected against GHS and Damien..enough said.

Hey Anonymous-Tillis must have a twin, because he was at LA last summer. He was at LA. Duh!

South Hills We're Back & You aint no Castaneda- Hooray! I have to agree with you both.

With all due respect to Gano-he is really making a HUGE mistake at QB. Make a change! What do you have to lose? Looking at the stats-NOT MUCH!

If Gano doesn't make a change, LA is going DOWN! and so is his personal record for making the playoffs. Looks to me like he has another option in #2 OR #19. #2 & 19 were there all summer and then POOF Tamayo from Amat shows up 5'5", weak arm and no moves. It's the fourth game and he just gets his first TD pass. Of course this follows many overthrown passes to wide open receivers in the zone in prior games.

Let's be fair-some of the receivers are lacking too. #11 seems to require a perfect pass to make the catch, although he has the height, he doesn't seem to have the athleticism.

#2 has been at DB, but I have seen him at a couple of practices at receiver and he actually makes some athletic catches. Why isn't he one of the go to guys if you insist on Tamayo at QB? Use that speed. It's my understanding that #1,#2 & #5 are the fastest guys on the team. Get some plays in spread formation and use that speed. Can we have some reverses with this speed? Come on Gano-it aint rocket science, it's just football. And whose bright idea was it to throw a reverse to the tight end? Excuse me but SPEED is a key to a reverse being successful. Are you kidding me?

You left out the biggest difference between the games Glendora vs CO and Damien vs CO. CO didn't use Snowden in Damien game. Perhaps CO felt they needed their #1 "do everything player" against the tougher opponent Glendora then against Damien.

Give credit to SF for a great game plan. Gano rarely stunts and blitzes before an opponent exhibits the ability to throw. The Golden Knights seemed to have figured this out and it looked to me that they scripted their first series. Hayworth, (I beleive that was SF's QB), fresh and "hit-free" delivered the ball flawlessly and blew right through the already suspect Cong secondary.

When LA adjusted and began bringing backers on blitzes, after being down 21-0, he then executed the quick shovel pass, pitch and inside handoff beautifully. Very much in contrast to LA's effort to get the ball to anyone other that McBride, who played valiantly and tried, in vain, to carry the entire team. Tamayo looked confused and frankly, out of his depth. Too often when he did do his part another Conq would drop the ball or get cranked by a stunting and tenacious SF "D".

Gano expressed concern in week two about his "midgets" in the secondary and Friday night his concerns came to fruition.

Based on their remaining schedule and the now exposed "deep and seemingly irreparable flaws" in vital elements of any solid teams potential for sustained success, I am afraid the highlights and high points of this particular Los Altos season are now behind them.

Gano was outcoached. He and Los Altos are overrated. Bryce cant do it alone and he's not getting any help from his QB. Tamayo is not going to help you win games, period. Like someone said earlier, I dont care who you put in at QB, just get Tamayo out. 4 games into the season and he has not been effective. The defense needs to change their scheme and get off the field. They were on thr field more than the offense in this game. This needs to change.

Coach Gano did not do his job. It did not appear the team was prepared to defend the passing game. Why weren't you prepared for this team? LA did very little to adjust after the lead within the first 9 minutes. A few hints-change that short qb he can't even see over the line. He turns over the ball repeatedly-throws at least one interception per game. He lobs the ball and gets your tight end lit up every pass. The pressure is too much for this qb. he is not a play maker.

You need that qb from summer-he can move and has a strong arm. #5 may have his part, but he will not be able to carry the entire team. Your defense was lacking big time.

No pass, no win! You got beat by the pass. Take the hint & do the same.

You dont have to watch the video Fred. Let me tell you what happened. SF QB Austin Heyworth and WR Kevin Garcia torched the LA secondary in the first half which spread the defense out and allowed SF to dominate with the running game in the second half, led by RB D. Riley, K. Morgan, and E. King. That was it, plain and simple. Ganos was outcoached, and the Conqs were outmatched!

P.S. My prayers go out to #65. Hope for a quick recovery.

You said to watch out for No. 4 and No. 21 and you where right. No. 4 Dietrich Riley had an awesome game, as I wrote about in an earlier blog, and No. 21 Kevin Garcia, a senior wide receiver/defensive back, wasn't far behind with his two TDs and two fourth-quarter-interceptions to help seal the victory.

Evan King, a junior running back/linebacker, also had a great game, scoring two TDs and getting that last block to spring Riley loose for the last touchdown.

The Golden Knights' offensive and defensive fronts also had monster games.

Perhaps one of the reasons St. Francis is celebrating and Los Altos is hurting right now is the media hype before the game.

Garcia said he listened to the SGVT's two-minute drill audio clip five times to get pumped up. St. Francis senior lineman Dan Scheper said he was amazed at the level of disrespect. Coach Jim Bonds didn't have to do much to motivate his players; the media did it all for him.

On the flipside, Los Altos apparently believed the hype and perhaps came in a little over-confident.

"I noticed during pregame, they didn't look fired up at all," Garcia said. "We came in knowing that they were going to beat us."

But the Golden Knights refused to lose.

"No, no way. Not in front of our fans and our parents. No way," Garcia said.

Added Riley: "We heard all the hype. The papers saying we couldn't beat them, that they we're going to devour us and we just wanted to respond back."

Said Scheper: "They came in expecting to whomp on us, but we had a different idea."

Re: GHS vs ELDO

I know that alot of GHS bloggers need to be reminded where our team stands. So, to accommondate the numerical situation certain entities have created a top-ten status to rank each team in SGV. Preseason rating and ranking have never interest me. So, instead of teams needing to be reminded where they stand....they should be questioning how well they are physically and mentally prepared to compete.

Having said that, this weeks (Thursday's) game against ElDo will test both teams abilitY to adjust and avoid the pit-falls of costly mistakes.

ElDo is a well coached team....which explains their championship status. Their QB is similar in talent, size, and strength, as last week's West Ranch QB.

ElDo's front offensive line is not big...but does have the ability to move on the snap to defend their backfield.

I witnessed ELDO as they squared off against Fullerton a few weeks back and walked away believing they were a solid team and on any given night could and would defend their status.

A few comments have been made about ElDo's loss of quality players of last year. To those that think that is true....think again....because they appear as if they have reloaded. Think any less...and we get kicked in the snout again.

Staying focussed and executing our kind of game will corner another win.

Re: Damien vs COHS

The effects of kissing your sister is something COHS grasped last night...This game had all the feeling of last weeks game against GHS....the difference was that there were no last second heroics by COHS to pull out a victory.

Damien's defensive strides were unbelieveable. For that matter both teams played big time D all night to keep it equal.

Offensively Damien's QB is without a doubt a franchise player....and with Damien's offensive front hogs they executed well. Throw in WR Talmo and company and Damien appears to be the real deal this year. The way they played last night made me question their loses.

On defense Damien's Raby has got be the top SGV defensive player of 2007. He plowed over player after player and in the end proved to be the momentum breaker as he uprooted COHS back field.

FYI: Neither team needs to make excuses for last nights competition...it was worth the price of admission.

NOTE: Watching Damien last night proved that the GHS showdown in two weeks will be fierce.

Well football fans...Morrison (Damien) had a better week this week. Instead of a loss, Damien had a tie with Charter Oak! For some, I guess a tie is an improvement. Damien was in the red zone way too many times (at least 4) which resulted in 0 points on the board.

Where is the offensive coaching and play calling? PLEASE somebody help this coach! As my name implies, I am a benchwarmer but even benchwarmers like me know that when it is 3 down and 8 to go, you send all your receivers to the first down marker - NOT 2 yards from scrimmage!
And, Morrison's favorite play and possibly only play in Damien's playbook, run your 125lb (when soaking wet)sophomore up the middle whenever you decide to run the ball for a gain of 1! Too bad there aren't 10 downs to get 10 yards and then maybe Damien could get more first down conversions! UGHHHHHHH - It's just so painful.

And as i mentioned in a previous post about leaving talent on the bench, not so "Mighty Mo" puts in his #1 quarterback to play safety, in addition to being quarterback. Evidently,there isn't one of his 76 benchwarmers he can't put into that position?

I say Coach, coach! You have 98 kids on your varsity "team"! 76 of them YOU evidently have'nt taught or coached well enough because you keep them on the bench. What kind of teacher are you if your kids ain't learnin'? If you trusted your abilities as a coach, you would put some of these kids in!...and you wouldn't have to risk the health of your #1 quarterback! Live dangerously coach! Take a chance on your bench! I bet you'll be pleasently surprised by a few of your boys! Reality check here, not so "Mighty Mo", so far YOU do not have a "winning" team! What do you have to lose by putting in some different meat? Are you afraid of what you might have and admitting you made some wrong judgements?

Who said that they found a way to stop McBride. Wake up, 156 yards rushing and a 96 yard kick off return. Lack of passing game was exposed. If LA can muster up some sort of a passing game down the stretch they will be dangerous. Big loss to the Conquerors in loosing Contreras, broken leg.

Tough top ten decisions this week.

Give credit to SF for a great game plan. Gano rarely stunts and blitzes before an opponent exhibits the ability to throw. The Golden Knights seemed to have figured this out and it looked to me that they scripted their first series. Hayworth, (I beleive that was SF's QB), fresh and "hit-free" delivered the ball flawlessly and blew right through the already suspect Cong secondary.

When LA adjusted and began bringing backers on blitzes, after being down 21-0, he then executed the quick shovel pass, pitch and inside handoff beautifully. Very much in contrast to LA's effort to get the ball to anyone other that McBride, who played valiantly and tried, in vain, to carry the entire team. Tamayo looked confused and frankly, out of his depth. Too often when he did do his part another Conq would drop the ball or get cranked by a stunting and tenacious SF "D".

Gano expressed concern in week two about his "midgets" in the secondary and Friday night his concerns came to fruition.

Based on their remaining schedule and the now exposed "deep and seemingly irreparable flaws" in vital elements of any solid teams potential for sustained success, I am afraid the highlights and high points of this particular Los Altos season are now behind them.

Dan, you are absolutely correct about the poor tackling. I was sitting near the press box, and could hear RC coaches calling our plays. One in particular was a first down, when (we would normally run)and the (RC) was shouting watch the play action, blitzed and blew up the play. SO i think RC coaches had our tendencies pretty good, and did an excellent job preparing their team. I am not a coach, just an observer, and it seemed to me that WC stayed in the same 'man' defense the entire game,with two LB 'Dogs', DE's running strait to QB with no concern for contain. Now, being the optimist (myopian?) that I am, I am going to say this is all in the grand scheme of the WestCo coaching staff to A) Bring the youngsters along slowly, and B) Not put anything but base defenses on film for their San Ant. league rivals.

I knew it was only a matter of time till someone found the weakness that is our secondary. That was embarassing! LA defensive coordinator should be ashamed of himself for that scheme. He left the kids out to dry! They put 21 pts. on our kids in 9 minutes because we were playing a crappy coverage. By the time we figured it out it was too late.

We lost to a better, more prepared team tonight folks. Give St. Francis credit, for the second straight year they just came out and whooped our ass!

About Glendora being #1. Well that's tough when CO are technically undefeated. Or in Glendora terms half a game better than the Tartans! Beat Damien and then you're #1. I've seen GHS twice this year and they are very very good. Defense is very good, Kovar and front 7 are impressive. But the LBs make it all so painful. Vega is a horse. QB K is solid. Freshmen Gonzalez is starting as a Freshmen! And the scary thing is they could be alot better when the Sierra League rolls around. Coach P is calling a great game. Toyed with Western on Thursday. Coach P is incredible. He's a winner and a winner maker.

Ouch that hurts! well we got an idea where our Bulldogs are at and there is some work that needs to be done. Tackling was an issue tonight for our,
young team,I think our boys forgot how, I've never seen so many occasions where a tackler has the ball carrier in his grasp & then slide right down his body this is with two hands wrapped around the ball carrier. The Bulldogs started well & it looked like it was going to be a good night, but then the tackling started to go south.
I also think speed had a lot to do with the poor tackling, the Cougars had several kids with break away speed, & I think that caused our kids to be off balance or out of position when they were tackling causing them to reach with their arms, I also saw a few times where our kids misjudged the speed and took the wrong angle towards the runner.
The good news is we have a sophmore QB that can throw the ball,This kid is going to be a good one, once the Cougars adjusted to our running game & slowed it down we were able to get the passing game working & that openned the run game again, the only problem is that it was to late in the game because the Cougars had done their damage.
Other good news is we are young & still learning, and we can improve with this kind of experience, next up is Ayala, another tough game.

I was pointing out for you glendora fan that co tied withOUT snowden, I thought narrow-minded GHS would be happy with that news. I also think it's an unwritten rule in HS that any defending champ in most cases will hold on to #1 until they lose the following year. I also have no idea who El DO has played thus far but I know they lost some serious horses from last year. I guess the sierra is ok with the many good close losses this year.

Skrid, West Ranch was rated higher than any team around. Fox news and KCAL were at Citrus last night. Didn't get the story they came for. Oh well. Our division has the #2 team in the country (United States Of America) Who is your # 1 for the valley? Honestly?

Now you're starting to sound whiney. Yes Snowden's a stud and was the difference in our game, but you still gotta find a way to overcome a loss of any player if you're good. The guy that was working best for us that night had his legs cut out from under him and in the end, we didn't step up. We learned our lesson this week (and hopefully in weeks to come). Damien is obviously starting to learn to play without their stud back since losing him before the season. Nice work Spartans holding up some Sierra pride. Ayala too...what happened to DRanch! I can't wait to read the story on that game. And DBar showed well; Chino Hills also got a close win over a tough Etiwanda. Solid week in the Sierra. As for next week's opponant for us Skrid, I like how you are already discounting them for us. Fact is, they look like they have reloaded and are tops in YOUR division...you DID imply that CIF rankings are real valid this time of year, didn't you? Don't worry about our ranking though, it will come soon enough. CIF voters who put CHINO in the top 10 are obviously not paying very close attention to all the teams so far. That will change & the cream will rise. Yes, I am confident that will include GHS, but the games still must be played and each week is a new challange. We'll try and take care of that nasty El Do pain for you though and help you move up in your division where you may belong.

Bill, I don't decide games based on the popularity of schools on this blog. There are thousands, and thousands of high school fans who don't blog, or use the internet much. Look at last week, there were an estimated 4,000 fans at the BPark-Sierra Vista game, yet you hardly see any of their fans blogging. Should I ignore that segment of the SGV because you don't see them blogging here?

I know you are trying to defend your selection but I am not buying it. The Mid-Valley league is full of lower level teams. Under the old CIF system of ranking schools what was Duarte like division 10 or 11? On this blog how many people do you think really care about Duarte and Sadstone? If you took a poll of which teams people would want to see highlights of these two would be at the bottom of list. Stick with the top teams in the area.

Bill, Duarte hasn't been on the cover yet. You don't think a team top-ranked team in its own division deserves front page coverage at least once? You don't think a game that will ultimately decide the Montview League title deserves its Friday night headlines?

The Tribune's main focus should be covering the best game on the schedule regardless of the coaches, players and fans of the local teams. No one wants to watch an overrated Duarte team against a Gladstone team that will be overmatched. This game will be a blow out. My team has nothing to do with the best game to watch highlights of. This shows your lack of intelligence which seems typical of most Glendora( nose in the air) Tartan fans.

Kudos to Glendora football team. Here is a "home grown" football team that doesn't back down to competition, unlike LA. You have my respect and #1 vote.

Thanks Bill, the best game to you might not be the best game for everyone else. Duarte's the top-ranked team in the Mid-Valley Division, and Gladstone might be the only team in the Montview to give them a game...Can't feature the Glendora's, Damien's, Charter Oak's, South Hills, Los Altos', etc, every week.

Diamond Bar looks to be the real deal. I like what John Martin has done there. If they are able to run the ball the rest of the season like they did Thursday, this is a team that can do a lot of damage in the Sierra League. I liked they way they mixed in some sweeps with QB Hunter Warren. They really had Troy guessing. This was a game that Diamond Bar should have won.
On another note, UCLA fans should be very pleased with Troy's Derrick Walker. He's the real deal...if they can keep him.

Reading the paper his morning made me think what a great job Correspondent John Honell did upon covering our game last night against West Ranch.

As noted, Honell actually took the time and effort to obtain a team roster and followed the game matching numbered jersey's with player's names. What a novel idea.

My sarcasizm is not meant for Mr. Honell because I truely enjoyed your style of journalism and connection with the game.

If this blog makes anyone take notice, it should be the regulars that write everyday in our local paper.

Reading of names and accomplishments other then who scored or who passed for yards is what each kid that buries himself in the trenches want to read about. Fans and coaches alike also appreciate the efforts of a solid sports writer like Honell.

FYI: Honell great professional effort..thank you. I'd like to read about all of the SGV teams and players that make it happen every week.

The reason San Dimas is not rated higher is simple, their opponents combined record is 3-12. With those 3 wins coming against Ganesha, La Puente, and Nogales.

Truth Be Told...

I was leary of this years Conq squad, fearing that the over-achieving team of last year which was losing the guns they had, Castaneda, Foss and Thomas, was going to be thumped more than once. So now, I get to enjoy some "healthy entertainment" by a very competitive team at the level in which they play, and somehow that has translated into a lot of chest thumping from other SGV faithful asserting that their program is greater than LA.

Maybe so, but I know I didn't have a vote on the SGV top ten, and knowing I have not seen anyone other than LA and its opponents, I would only be voting with my heart if asked to do so.

Good luck Amat, I hope your fortunes turn in a very difficult league schedule, but I seriously believe you should consider the idea of lobbying for a re-assignment of divisions. The demographics of the SGV sure ain't what it used to be but if pride is keeping you from seeking such a realignment, like I said, I wish you luck.

Ranking Gladstone that high two years ago was a joke anyway. That's why the divisions realligned.

I guess Gladstone might score a touchdown against Duarte?? I would say that Duarte should win by at least 3 touchdowns. I will say 35-7 or 35-14.

Furthermore, I completely agree with the Duarte's coaches comments about wanting to win a CIF championship. I also agree with the comment he made about Gladstone's coaches. They were the number #2 seed (with this big and talented running back) a few years ago. But, they complained about playing a 4th place team from the Santa Barbara area. They ended up losing the game because they did come out flat in the first half.

Solid win GT! We got caught on a safety blitz on West Ranch's first possession...the draw play broke thru out Linebackers and there was no one there. That 60 yard run for TD was about all the Ranch offense did all night. Very late TD was meaningless. If Brian Spirlin (DRanch)had twice as many carries as he does he would have 800 yards. And he did that against Edison,Chino Hills and Cristian San Diego three very good teams.Who knows if we had Rosemead and Long Beach Wilson at the beginning he might be at 1200 yds!.Fred lets also give alot of credit to the OL for DRanch.Pretty good size and seem's to be one of the quickest lines in sgv.

Excited for a very good game tonight at Citrus College! West Ranch is said to have a big line and a very good offense. Should be a fun matchup with the Tartan D. Go get'em boys! Opened up the Trib. today, got out my magnifying glass and read the few lines there about the game tonight to get me pumped up. lol...Just givin you a hard time Freddy.
