Why in world would you even care about what we at Amat say or do?...you are from the Eastside with no attachment whatsoever to Amat. I can guess you are a transplant but stick to the Garfield bashing, we dont need people like you that know nothing first hand about our football history to come in here like he knows everything there is to know about Amat Football. How you ever became a basher still puzzles me because your attachment is to ELA and not the SGV. Your news to us about Amat and it's decline is nothing new to us we know we are at a low right now...what you fail to realize is the cycles all football programs go thru. Banning was a kick a-- school and struggled and now has partially come back again. Wilson Mules in the Cuccia Clarkson days were awesome but then went down and are still down as you can see losing to Roughriders in double OT last Friday after Max Preps had them losing to the Mules.....No one comes over to these schools and bashes them like you come in here and bash Amat History....Again we are down but not forgotten it will take time to get back but we will. We will not leave D1 and we will continue to fight on that is what good programs do, We will be back were just in a down cycle but as you know the cycle will return just like they all do. You need some growing up to do pal.

Question here, doesnt it make sense that over the past 6 years or so your freshmen teams either compete or win a league title and then as seniors they are getting waxed all over the field by the same teams they crushed as freshmen, and the rosters change and all these kids who left are either all leaguers or all C.I.F. players everywhere else.

A point to keep in mind guido, many top programs tell thier kids we dont care about your color your size who your parents are etc just go out and play if you get a scholarship thats extra but your here as you are if you can play we will put you on the field, and guess what scherlock kids respond to this as well as parents.

Geographically, DR may be close to the IE, but in terms of who they must compete with, they are squarely in the SGV.

I have lived in Riverside for 25 years, and have seen the IE's evolution into a HS football "Hotbed". Exciting stuff.

I give DR a lot of credit for seeking to take on only the best in pre-season, it appears that tactic has certainly "quickened" the maturity process for their program.

Should be a great game at Colony Thursday night with Etiwanda hosting Glendora. Great chance to prove two of your theories right...or very wrong. IE vs. SGV? Here's a great test of that with two teams from the same division, with Etiwanda rated just a bit higher. Is Glendora overhyped as you say? Is their football team on par with their b-ball team this year? I guess we'll have a pretty good idea after Thursday night. Should be fun, are you gonna be there? Hope so.

West Covina will be fine,I'll bet they will be in the SGV top ten by years end, This years Mater Dei team would have done the same to most teams in the SGV top ten.
They are not your average pac 5 team this year, but look much better than last year. Our WC boys have very little varsity experience with only 3 returning starters,they weren't ready for the type of team they saw with Mater Dei, but there is some talent and I bet they will learn a lot by the time league comes around, despite the score I saw some good things from our boys, you'll see as the season progresses. Now go crawl back in your rock cluless.

im not trying to make any excuses for monrovia, but you have to look at this... 2 of the turnovers that duarte scored on was from the snap.. Monrovia had their 3rd string center who's never played a down of center as their starting center because their starting center was out....

and, their running back got injured in the first quarter so that had some effect on it

It has been a great start to the season. Many upsets and many great players. Hopefully this keeps up. Here is my personal insight on a few things:

1. Amat needs to go back to their old ways: Recruiting players! Until they go back to their old ways, they will continue to suck.

2. Everyone needs to leave my boy Crutchfield alone! He said he team was the best in the valley......so what. You can call him childish, ametuaurish, etc. At least he believes his team is the best. They did get smashed by Ayala, but then came back the next week and smashed the so called mighty Monrovia. Duarte will easily win their league and then go far in the playoffs.

3. If LP doesn't beat Ganesha next week, then they will not win a game all year. Nice field, but horrible team!

4. CO and SH are still the class of the SGV. They both lost this past Friday, but when it's all said and done, they will both win their divisions in CIF.

5. Glendora has been and will also be overated. If it's not Glendora basketball, why are we even talking about that school.

6. The best high school football is still played in the IE!

Re: button wearers

Sports fans...the season is young and if you follow HS football you have to agree that alot can happen from week one to ten. Based on my blogs you all know who I personally support, but I also want everyone in the entire SGV to have some level of success. It's important that we support all of the kids because they represent our families and communities at large. I suppose everyone that posts on this blog site is in some degree a button wearer just for supporting or offering a point of view...whether agreed or not.

I know for a fact that some of the greatest HS, college, and pro, football players that ever played the game came from this valley. Each SGV HS has a storied past and presence, and if those facts inspire our children, then so be it, because I support that effort. If that makes me a button wearer I couldn't be prouder.

lay off the coach's, oh ok . Give me a break, just because your job is to suck up to them doesnt mean we have to respect your wishes. In fact, when was the last time you were ever critical of a coach. Let me guess, thats not your job to be critical just to get the story. I'll bet I could find a hs freshman who could ask tougher questions. They are coachs at high profile schools, they actually know that this will happen if they don't live up to expectations. This job takes lots of ego and thick skin to survive. You just lost plenty of respect.

As soon as one of our boys, coaches, whatever needs to be brought back down to earth with helpful advice, FANatic will be the first to say it loud and clear TO THE COACH, so at least there is a 50/50 chance he'll here me and, if I'm right, make the necessary adjustments. But, I'm certain Coach P will be 2 steps ahead of me. It's uncanny how Coach P sees all positions on the field at the same time. You heard of the Mercury Insurance commercial "were not from outer space", sometimes I wonder if the coach actually has 1000 eyes and probably "my favorite martian" antennae under that funny practice hat he wears (sorry coach, just being real).

Last year I commented until I was blue in the kisser regarding the ridiculous "pooch" kicks and sometimes inappropriate (alright, being that we are all being honest here) SILLY play calling. I and others brought this up directly to the coach. Did he respond? Well, he's the coach, not me. But he certainly new how will all felt about it.

My motto, let the coach coach. That's what he does and he really is damn good at it. If I could coach, well... i'd be coaching not watching.

I love that t-shirt company whose shirts read "DIE TRYING...NOT WATCHING". I try to instill this motto into my son's daily life, when he listens..not often!

These last two weekends have been brutal with attacks, retort's and some down right pissed off people. I was wondering, is this blog for ex-ballers who are feeling those competative juices flowing back through our blood and have us feeling and acting like we are about to strap it on again. I think there some truth to that, when we were young how many times did you stop to think before acting out and making the wrong choice, not often. To my fellow bloggers, I offer up a plea: Let's try to stay away from personal attacks. This is just the first full weekend of the season, and we've already seen some personal attacks on three coaches.
Remember these are men who have made the choice to work; the chose to sacrifice and give up their time; the choice, along with their players, to put themselves on the line to represent "your" high school and community. That type of commitment demands and deserves your respect, whether he is coaching at your high school or your rival's. So, yes, be critical of what you see on the field; critize their playing calling, if you feel the need to, and state your opinion. But lets try to refrain from the personal attacks, which has no place here or any other forum.

Probably no difference of opinion. Definately a need for both truthful and specific praise along with some constructive critique while reaching towards some stretch goals.

Aim for the stars and you'll get to the moon - I get that. I just know that it takes a bunch of hard work to get there - no matter what you shoot for.

"Be the Best..." is a great goal to have. Follow that with "...that you can be" and it is the perfect goal.

Two very different aspirations that John Wooden really figured out, and turned those into a bundle of championships. Because the latter YOU can control - and the former you have absolutely NO control over.

If you concentrate on the things that you can control like maximum effort, attention to detail and recovering from setback - you're going to have the season that you should, or could, have.

Praise that is intended for a moment of inspiration, parent pride and love for the program is really "nice" and does wonders in the short term and does create a real "feel good" attitude that is necessary to continue to relentlessy strive for the goals above.

However, if that praise is not entirely truthful, it will eventually fall on deaf ears as players(and coaches) are smarter than that. We can fake them out for a while but, deep down, they will either buy into the "hype" and not put forth the kind of daily effort necessary (ie: the fall of the lancers over the years) OR they will see through the smokecreen and we lose our credibility with the kids altogether. If they did something great, tell them... EVERY time, by all means. But if they could do something better they NEED to be told that too...WITHOUT FAIL.

That balance is no different than the "fire and brimstone" pep talks that wear off after a short period of time, or the yelling and screaming coach that may get kids to perform at the moment... just to get the coach to shut up. If that's all the kid hears it wears off and they build an immunity to coaching - and parenting.

We want our kids to perform not because they are looking for praise...and not because they are afraid of the consequences if they don't...but we want them to compete because it is the right thing to do and they don't know any other way. That's when sports does its' job and prepares kids for life outside the lines.

good post fanatic, you have inspired me to dig out my old high school year book. i'm starting to miss the good old days (ancient times!)when team spirit was looked upon as a good thing and PC was later to become a personal computer.

They have a saying at my grandsons high school, "if you can't take the heat, get out of the locker room" my favorite ones though are posted on the team room wall, "Cautious speculation only works on Wall Street, Keep it out of the team room" and "We want winners, not whiniers".

I was speaking of the head coach at WC " formerly the WC spartans" who went to edgewood before they combined schools were the trojans. Spartans + Trojans= Bulldogs Ihope your less confused than I was typing that.

Your answer was correct, damn I was hungry too. Everything you read in the paper was correct, it was a defensive battle. Two missed FG's and stopped inside the one at the gun for halftime. I believe upland had one first down the first half. The third qtr Upland drove the field and got picked in the end zone. The 4th everytime CO gave up a sack they had a holding call also. Instead of declinig with the lost yards due to the sacks they kept accepting and pushing them back further. Co was forced into some long situations hence, the big INT.

JFR is an old school Edgewood Trojan. Prior to the merge, West Covina HS was the Spartans. To some, they will always be Spartans. Maggiore, coach at West Covina, is a former Trojan also. That explains the Cameron Ave. Trivia. But I bet JFR has got some good stuff from down Orange Ave also !

Did you know that a crew of amat boosters investigated purchasing the Edgewood campus from the District in the mid-'90s? MSGr Carroll shot that down that potential move early. Nah, that wouldn't have been a GREAT idea!:(

I never understood why they moved everyone to WC instead of the MUCH nicer (and newer) campus at Edgwood. Location? (ie: center of WC vs border of WC?)

Every page in this program was inspiration. Not a "one and done" approach. I'll bet every HS football program has insirational ads. Every coach in the pre-game locker room tells the team "go out there and win, you are the better team tonight'. They woudn't be very inspired with a coach saying "this is a different team you are playing tonight, we will have to wait see how well you will do".

Remember Mikey, the Tartan Motto "Be the Best" words of "INSPIRATION" by the late great Tartan coach Dean Karnoski. I guess the words "wait and see" wouldn't be as inspirational.

Regardless, tell me what your impression of the game was because from what I read Charter Oak was in the game but couldn't capitalize on their opportunities?

Wow!

Here's the Tartan Talk I predicted earlier I guess. Very solid win last night. Saw some very positive signs on offense in both the passing and running game where youth/lake of varsity experience was a bit of a concern. Kicking game...oh what a relief it is! "The D" was "The D" and I expect all season will be. Now that said, it was only one game and with all due respect to what has been a valiant opponant the last few years, Covina is a much lower division team. They are a good one, but still... Next week we will see better how we fare in our own division with a top ten CIF team in Etiwanda (what are they, 7th I think?), on the road no less. We need a win there if we expect to be a top team in division as well.
Joe Colt, sorry you had to work. I was lookin' for you in that sparse Covina crowd. I thought you were either the guy in the green golf shirt or one of the two in the white t-shirts. You guys will still finish 1 or 2 in league I predict.
Mr. Factoid Dude, I can't see Coach P going anywhere the next few years. In spite of this great senior class there are a truckload of youngsters coming up and even getting exposure at the varsity level right now. Especially the Soph. class (at least a dozen kids played last night including a top runner and receiver) and the Frosh class (85+ kids on the Frosh. team PLUS 2 on varsity. One is our tallest playing and a top receiver/punter and the other played a series last night as our backup QB). He's at a DII school with great booster support that appears to be poised to make some real noise the next few years. Can't wait until Thursday already; Yes this week's game is Thurs. at Colony H.S. if you are at all curious about this team.

Whew! Talk about the night of the long knives. Week one is done and it sounds like some folks think the season is over for everyone but Los Altos and Glendora. When I look at the results my take is that some Coaches used Friday night to make a point, (DR's Coach Layton made maybe the biggest point of all), but were there surprises?

Northview: Vikes have a solid Offense, but they played MONTEBELLO guys! Can you say 'doormat of the ALMONT' ?

Glendora: Clobbered the Colts, but so did Bonita last weak Soft year for Covina and as good as the Tartans obviously are, I'm gonna wait a couple more weeks before anointing them.

Los Altos: Seven TD's against the third best team in the Mission Valley league ain't gonna win another Miramonte title. I'll wait and see here too.

Duarte: I predicted Duarte would play a furious game, they did, (although, I didn't get the winner right).

South Hills: My prediction, (look it up), TH by 7; the score? TH13 – SH 6

West Covina: If no Bulldogs left the stadium on a wheeled conveyance, I am calling this one a moral victory.

Charter Oak: I mis-called this one too but CO will be back. I would not want to be on the field for La Mirada next week.

San Dimas: Something telling here. The Saints should have been better than a one TD win over SEM.

Amat: Oh Lu! OC Lancers apparently still cranky over Pope Leo's persecution of Martin in 16th C.

Bonita: Unexpected Bearcat breakdowns and bad choices here surprised me. Canyon coming, Canyon coming.

Diamond Bar: I called it Brahma's by 21, DB wins by 25

TC and Arroyo: Right spread, (+3), wrong team

Rowland and Cal Hi: Raiders working hard on the kicking game

Diamond Ranch and Chino Hills: I guess that Layton, (or is it Leach), pre-season scheme doesn't look so wacky anymore, huh?

El Monte and Sierra Vista: OK, so I was off by 5 points. Shoot me.

Gladstone at Ganesha: BFD. This game only mattered to that one knucklehead in Azusa who has DSL.

Damien at Bosco: I called SJB by 10, clearly no one is perfect.

Workman at Keppel: Who cares?

Norwalk at Bassett: I called Norwalk by only 14 and they surprised me by leaving the first string for two whole quarters.

I had to work and couldnt make the game but the outcome was as I expected but only lightly alluded to prior to its conclusion, although the score did cause me to raise an eyebrow.

Glendora just might be the real deal this year and I truly hope thats the case, a well balanced team will go far.

Like all teams you guys need some refinement but overall have all the weapons required to go deep into CIF if not win the whole tamale, I have confidence that the Tartans will do well.

We at Covina graduated many talented seniors and even though I hate to use the term rebuilding I do believe that is the situation, we have never been known for reloading quickly but hey, it is what it is.

I wish you all luck and I most likely will take in a GHS game to see the team personally. I will look for you if I do, your the guy in the kilt, correct?

Great to have you back Plaiddy. The kids are inspired to BE THE BEST (to borrow a phrase) with your honest approach and reviews. Keep it up.

As you know, the Tartans this year really are a different team; multi-dimensional, deep with talent and experience. People need to understand, we are not making these crazy statements and big predictions based on last nights victory. We have been saying this since the begining of practice. We have known these kids for years and what they can and will accomplish.

Unlike years past, the Tartans really don't have a weakness. We can run, pass, catch, block, rush, tackle, kick and hit as hard as any one else.

Etiwanda will be a tough opponent. The Tartans will come to play. If we can stay healthy all season, there isn't a team on our schedule we can't beat, not one.

Play calling was pretty good last night. Coach P needs to continue to mix things up on offense, keep our opponents defense guessing. Running game was real nice. Good to see so many kids capable of carring the ball. Drew had great control with his passing...very impressive!

Don't make any changes with the D...they are doing just fine. Good crowd from Glendora last night. Was sorry to see so few Covina fans at Citrus Stadium. Much more at the Bonita game.

Covina's QB also played defense. He's a talented kid. Covina really breeds athletic studs over there. They will do just fine within their own league.

Again, Plaiddy, I'm glad you are back. The Year of the Tartan would not be the same with out you!

Congrats on the Tartans victory and personally most important your son's debut at RB. Notice I said RB instead of FB because he proved last night to be more than just a hard-nosed runner. I heard he also displayed some finesse skills.
Please tell me you also delegate your booster duties to someone else after the beginning of game so you can watch the action from the opening kickoff until the game has ended.
I heard about Barbone last week and about your son this week and the two of them really are an inspiration with their old-school throwback playing strategies and techniques.

Re: This Thursday and Etiwanda

Etiwanda might be a worthy challenge for GHS. Eti will be equipped with speed and descent size. They should be boostful of their recent victory. I figure that the air will escape their balloons by the third quarter. With little depth their squad of starters will be spent to begin the second half of the game. Look for our boys to be physically in charge of the game as Eti bends and breaks under the pressures of our D.

Kid Kaluzny and company will be afforded great field positioning due to our D and Special Teams play on the ball. Rest assured that those days of yesterday and our "one dementional O" are now history. Coach P will display a variety of ways we pick up first downs and score.

If we come committed to grind on all cylinders...I smell nothing but another win for GHS.

Not surprised not to see any comments from SH fans. Must be recovering from the shock therapy administerd by TH. You are probably still upset at being highly ranked because so much hype was written and said about your team. Funny but this somehow creates unrealistic fan expectations and of course all this will do is put so much pressure on your team that you ask yourselves how the hell do we live up to these expectations and hype and not disappoint our fans? Maybe the hype was unwarranted. The sheer pressure of winning must have been so overwhelming you couldn't focus.

Of course we can only put these unpredictable evaluations to the test on Friday nights. You win, the prep writers look fantastic, you lose and get embarrassed, the prep writers change the rankings. This scenario goes on week after week.

This is not your fault, blame it on those funky prep sportwriters who seem to have that magical crystal ball and can make those magical predictions.

I have watched you boys since you were toddlers. I have seen you perform as young men in JAA and now, many of you are playing as seniors at GHS. Most of you will hang up your cleats after this season and never play together again. Cheerish these moments with your hommies. You will remember your HS football years forever.

Drew, son you are a leader. You play with much more maturity on the field than you have in actual years. I am so excited about the real possibilities in store this season for you and the team.

O-line, geez you big boys really hold it together. Seemed like Drew had eternity to release that ball. Thanks for the big holes!

Receivers and running backs, this was an area I was most worried about this season. Didn't know how we could ever manage without Edmond and Butler. Thanks for putting an end to those worries. I spoke with Jordan E. after the game and he was as impressed as the thousands of other fans in the stands.

Vince, thank god you are healthy this season and kicking like a mule. No longer will I be crossing my fingers during the PA's or cursing at the kick off's

Defense (I'll speak to you as a group), I have not much to say which hasn't been said already. I AM CONVINCED THE TARTAN D IS THE BEST IN THE VALLEY and I believe you will out score the oppossing offense every game. Period.

DR - Nice start, but I wouldn't get too hyped about the matchup with "CIF Champs Chrsitian HS from Cajon". They have under 400 students in the school, so it would be about like beating Ontario Christian - which we would all expect you to do.

Your good showing against Edison, while a loss, is far more telling than even a blow-out win against Christian will be. Now that other Christian school in a couple of weeks (Oaks) will be a little better test.

Is it wrong to know my local HS history? I was born and raised in the SGV and played ball for a damn good schol to boot. I have for some reason or another always had a knack for retaining meaningless SGV football history. I would probably be able to tell you about many of the top studs and teams from the early to mid 80's until today. I'm curious why you say huskies or bulldogs, I only remember the spartans who are now coached by a former trojan. Are you trying to OUT me. TRIVIA ANSWER: He did attend SH and his position was center, pretty good whoever you are. What time is lunch.

Unbelievable, Tartans beat up on an unranked weak Covina team and now they are claiming a number 1 spot. Now that's laughable. Let's see you beat on someone your own size or better yet beat a highly ranked team before you start your self absorbed bantering.

This game was a weak indicator, all it tells me is you dominated a weak team, anyone can do that.

South Hills lost? What a surprise....NOT! This team is highly overrated!

The Address for DR is Pomona, but the school is basically Diamond Bar. The Trib covers them because they are worthy. What other team in both Valley's has a schedule like theirs? 42 Points against the #1 team in the IE. Chino Hills has 2 Blue Chip National Recruits (Harkey and O'Neil) and a couple other solid players who will play at the next level. Diamond Ranch is REAL! Come watch for yourself Saturday night when they take on CIF Champs Chrsitian HS from Cajon (San Diego area) at Ganesha.

Diamond Ranch is covered by us because they're in Pomona, which is still SGV. Chino Hills is only covered by us when going against SGV teams. That is why we don't rank them in our top ten, but obviously, they play a lot of teams in our area, and will be covered in that capacity.

why is it that DR and Chino Hills are covered by both the SGV and the Daily Bulletin?....they are ranked in the TOP 10 over there and are covered by reporters over there, so why do they take some of THIS valleys other schools INK time?, as well as ALL AREA selections?.....just wonderin FRED

LAConq, I covered the TC-Arroyo game to not only write the story, but work on the video highlights with Roa. We don't have camera crews to send out to each zone, so this way the Star-News and Trib each have a video game of the week. Plus I have my seasoned mapped out. I want to see as many different teams as I can, not just our so-called popular ones. I haven't seen Arroyo for a while, and was impressed with Partida and Co. I'm saving my first Los Altos game for Damien in a couple of weeks.

I think you've been doing a great job brother, but I got a bit of a beef with you. Why, in your second week of covering the Tribune area, are you over in the Star News area covering Temple City v. Arroyo? MAYBE you could say that Arroyo is in the Trib area, but probably not. There were some great games on our side of the 605 that should have been covered. I would have loved to see some highlights of Glendora, CO, LA, Northview, South Hills, etc.

I've seen four games in two weeks and can tell you there is a huge difference in talent and line play with some of your top ten teams. Please, no more top ten's from anyone. RE: GHS victory over Covina

I've been quiet over the past few weeks in preparation of what I said before....that GHS was bound for a big year in 2007. Congrats to the team, coaches, and fans...those in attendance were grateful for the money spent on the admission to the game. If you love footbal like I do...the ticket threw the front gate was well worth seeing first hand just how good GHS D and O are this year. The season is young and I'm sure Coach P and company will make all the right adjustments just in time to enter league play against Damien. But that is weeks ahead and we should be looking at Etiwanda and what they possess before planning any future celebrations. Mark my word we have plenty to improve upon before posting total dominance.

Charter Oak lost the game. No exuses. Upland has scoreboard. However there were some positive signs. C.O. slugged it out with Upland to a 0-0 tie until middway into the 4th quarter. The defense played outstanding. The offense moved the ball well early but could not convert in the red zone. The interceptions late in the game hurt. I'm sure the Upland coaching staff felt lucky to win as they were outplayed for most of the game. Give the Highlanders credit they made the big plays in crunch time. The Chargers will benefit from such a competitive contest.

I’m Mike the Clone and you are NOT!

Well I guess you can say “What a difference a year makes” and someone has lit a fire under Coach Pasquarella’s backside and it showed Mark looked energized and the offense was allowed to “gel” with sticking with one quarterback. Mark that little box you held in your right hand that was attached to your headset well that gets clipped on to your belt. That’s what runs the headset and you don’t have to hold it in your hand (I’m playing with you coach). I’m glad that finally you have other eyes out there seeing what your not able to. Although that headset was only on for the first quarter, it’s a start and I hope you keep those extra sets of eyes around you. Still didn’t see “pasqy” carrying a game card but hey at least the headset was a start.

Young “Kluz” young man I have always said that I have had confidence in you, son you handle your self well. You were patting your 0-line on the helmet to say “nice job” when they needed to hear it and that son is a sure sign of maturity. Another thing I noticed was that you didn’t have to wait so long for the play to be delivered to you like it was for you and “Crookie” last year. It makes a big difference when the sideline has its act together for you and your not hurrying all the time.

Jakie Vega, I am so happy for you and you have rebounded nicely. There was this pull from the O-line that sprung you loose on that nice run you made towards the east end zone. It so “sweet” and I believe it was “J Mac” (McGarry) and “Lily Pad” (Lilly) that pulled from the left side and literally blew a hole so wide open I could get my big butt through it. It was awesome to see those grunts upfront execute and just gets me fired up when I see stuff like that. O-line footwork was awesome for first time out keep working at it. Great Job Guys! Boooo Yaaahhhh!

The kicking game…is that the same kid from last year………WOW! Nah can’t be…Kyle are you on steroids? (That was a joke people! RELAX) Man awesome performance young man.

Defense well………..not much to say except, SWARMING. You guys have this uncanny way of seeing the ball and anticipating and I have a feeling that comes from Billy “Stryc”. He does his homework and you guys bring it home. I love watching coach he reminds me of one of my old coaches with how loud he is and how animated he is.

I look at this game as only one half. The second half was more about execution on our part more than anything else so I walked across to the Covina side something I have never done before and sat amongst the Covina faithful.I wanted to get a better view of our sideline and coaching staff and to see who was doing what and where. What a different perspective watching our staff and kids from across the field. My thoughts on that during the upcoming week.

Sitting over there I just could feel the let down after the year they had last year. I was looking around wondering who Joe Colt and Anymouse were and wondering if they would come up to this big guy and say, Hey, you wouldn’t happen to me Mike the frecking Clone are you? (Laughing)

Hey Joe Colt and I know Anymouse your still reading the blog, I just want you guys to hang in there your rebuilding and rebuilding can be frustrating sometimes. You guys have a lot of young kids going both ways. You reminded me of the Duarte team that we played last year with a lot of heart but just up against a team that is at a different level right now. Your going to hear some “knuckleheads” say we own you. Ignore it! If anything you have been to the “big show” for that we should respect you.

Overall not a bad showing for the “Bagpipers” but you “button wearers” better not be pounding your chest just yet. We have a lot of work ahead of us and we just kicked around a team that’s down. And that can lead to some “false positives”.

There is still a long journey ahead!

My last comment pitted SEM w/Glendora.. my bad, going to two games in one night gets my brain a little mixed up.. or could it be those two metal plates, courtesy Operation Desert Storm back in January Ninety-One... securely implanted on my left temporal region. I should also given kudos to those Saints who behaved like little devils vs. SEM.. and the paper pigeon. Thnking about it, maybe those TARTANS should not even look towards SEM because they would probably rack up twice as many points as did those little devils at Covina and the 210-57. All I gotta say is that that lake next to SEMHS, they could be easily sleeping with the cat-fishes courtesy other teams recurrent SH-PANKINS if they don't get their act together soon. GO OILERS!

Congratulations to Glendora fans, I was at our game against Bonita and of course Glendora. I walked away from the Bonita game thinking we need to improve, but Bonita was not a great team. However, I left the Glendora game last night thinking I just watched one of the best teams in the valley.

I was at the Co v Upland game. It looked to me that neither side wanted to win the game.

The CO defense did keep Upland from crossing the fifty until the 4th quarter. I know CO lost their huge line last year but these boys looked pretty big compared to Upland.

The game was not a blow out at all both teams played about the same .. Poorly

Like Lou said : "They ran out of gas" and you could see that plainly from the stands.

If that's all Upland has it's going to be a long season for them. Same goes for CO but I expect CO to pick it up by next week.

okay idk why this wasn't reported but starting runningback and potential division I college player Marquise Williams was injured in the 1st quarter of the game. no excuse because the game calling wasn't good at all but its something to look at.

Sign of the times---

Covina may not be the team they were last year, but they still came to play. While the caliber of the opponent is obviously a factor in any win, you can still learn alot about the skill of players and how a team functions together.

Glendora won while looking like a well oiled machine (as said in an earlier post both defensively and offensivily. I'm convinced, after seeing this team perform last night, Glendora could have beat any of the Tribunes top 10 teams and then some...hands down.

Many will not have the opportunity to see Glendora play, but if you do get the chance, go see them.

Several bloggers, not from Glendora, have had that opportunity and posted very good comments.

MTC either your a genius or you know something the rest of us dont but mostly every point you have made in the past showed up on that field last night. Even when I saw Pasquarella with a head set on I had to chuckle to myself and think Mikey the clone has got to be loving this.

A few thoughts on the Amat program and particularly on the game last night. Someone said it best on an earlier posting, and that was that we would have a better understanding of how good, or bad this team would be after the first two games.
Well, I have to say that I am both very disapointed and yet, suprisingly elated on the play of this team, this year.
On the positive end of things, I can certainly say that regardless of the scores of the first two games, that Amat has really looked good in some areas defensivly.
For example, they have really improved thier defensive line, and that improvement has limited the other teams ability to run on them. Teams are finding it much harder to go up the middle against this team, this year. And thats extreamly important, because last year, Hart ran at will up against Amat and just killed them there.
Having said that, there are still a few major weak points on this team, and one of them is in the pass defense. They are giving up way to many points there. gotta work on that a little.
The other weakness, is in special teams. Last years game aginst Loyola almost got away from them because of a succesful the onsides kick towards the end of that game, and last nights game started to go south when Lutheran sucessfuly did the same thing to them.
Believe it or not however, this team is actualy very good this year compaired to last season. But, they are not as good as the teams that they are playing against, so, the results of these games should not be surprising here.
I have to say, and it just an opinion here, that Amat should not be playing in this league with this schedual at this time. I know it's hard to say but just look at St Paul for example. Last year Amat beat up on teams in that schools league, yet Amat stayed home and St Paul went to the playoffs and won a game. That was realy wierd.
Unfortunaly, Amat just does'nt have the skill players or the coaching to compeate with the programs that are going up against right now. They should be in a league with some of the Catholic schools that St paul is in and schools like Notre Dame and Crespi should be in a league with Canyon and Hart.
You know, that was not supose to be a shot against anyone, but just an opinion here. Amat is just getting hammered right now and that is truly not a reflection on thier hearts but on the reality of where they find themselves at this time.

As far as the questions regarding whether Ayala is that good and are they going to gun for the Sierra League Title this year after a big win over Duarte, it should be pointed out that Ayala and the Sierra league are in Division II and Duarte and the Montiview League are in Division XI. While there is often little to distinguish between divisions that are close to each other, bad teams in Division II should easily outclass even the best teams in Division XI.

Bassett took it on the chin from the visiting Norwalk Lancers who scored on every first half possession and led 50-6 at the break.

Bassett scored on an 80 kick-off return in the first and on a recovered fumble in the second half, resulting in a final score of 57-12.

Fred/Steve, as I have said many times before, THE TARTANS ARE FOR REAL! Didn't some one predict earlier, the Tartan D would score more points each night that the oppossing offense? Two interceptions for touchdowns! The D worked like a well oiled machine last night with contributions from all positions on the field. Covina's only score was late in the 4th qtr after the starters had left the field.

Kaluz and this offense has answered the questioned. Kaluz looked like a seasoned pro, completing pass after pass and running two TD's in himself. Every running back was a weapon of mass distruction.

Covina never lost hope or faith. You guys played to the end with real heart. Hold your head up high!

Game got so boring I had to head up the street to Glendora and watched that fine-oiled machine teach the bulldogs (sorry, but not mine from Camp Pendelton) of Covina get a thorough clinic on HSFB. WOW! Just like my company, these Glendora boys had their boot strapped on tight and shinning like a mirror! My Oilers will be as they were soon.

LA PUENTE - It was another long night for Bishop Amat High School and head coach Mark Verti as the Lancers lost to Orange Lutheran, 38-7, on Friday.

It seemed as if Amat wasn't ready for the aggressive tactics practiced by Orange Lutheran early on.

Orange Lutheran head coach Jim Kunau wasn't afraid to make the Lancers play as he called for an onside kick after his team's first score. His strategy worked as his team caught Amat off-guard.

As Orange Lutheran scored on the ensuing drive, the Bishop Amat defense began to tire and it didn't improve the rest of the game.

It didn't stop there for Orange Lutheran as it gambled on two big plays. One was a fake punt resulting in a first down, and the other was a fake field goal it parlayed into a touchdown. Those two plays made it easy for Orange Lutheran to pretty much solidify a victory by halftime.

The Amat defense also can blame Orange Lutheran tight end Blake Ayles for their sluggish start. Ayles had a great game with 7 receptions for 139 yards and two touchdowns, all in the first half.

The Bishop Amat offense, on the other hand, couldn't get a rhythm going, partly because it almost never had the ball in the first half.

It also couldn't figure out who could lead the way at quarterback.

Junior Nicholas Lenhart started but was replaced by sophomore Jerry McClanahan in the second quarter. The two quarterbacks switched off after each possession, and neither quarterback was given a chance to get comfortable. They combined to pass for only 57 yards.

Senior running back Marcus Wagner also may have been frustrated by the lack of rhythm in the offense, as he gain only 30 yards on 8 carries.

Bishop Amat has started this season off slowly, but it still has has plenty of chances to defeat talented teams - such as Carson, Loyola and Notre Dame - which could turn its season around. Amat's quest to revive its season will start next Friday against Hart at the College of the Canyons.

Gilmore runs for three scores

LA PUENTE - Wilson High School enjoyed an offensive barrage Friday night, scoring a season-opening 40-21 nonleague victory over La Puente.

Wildcats running back Tim Gilmore rushed for 184 yards on 18 carries and scored three touchdowns on runs of 1, 13 and 9 yards.

Wilson's passing attack was just as efficient.

Quarterback Andrew Tomsio connected on 8-of-13 pass attempts for 220 yards, including touchdown tosses of 51 and 56 yards to Andrew Romero (six receptions, 172 yards) for the Wildcats, who led by as many as 33 points at 40-7.

La Puente (0-2) produced a solid ground attack.

Steven Barrientos carried 14 times for 109 yards and scored all three Warriors touchdowns.

Robert Cruz rushed for a team-high 142 yards on 19 carries.

EL MONTE - Quarterback Jorge Munoz passed for a touchdown and ran for another in a losing cause for the Vikings (0-1).

Munoz's TD strike was a 22-yarder to Rashad Martin, who caught three passes for 70 yards.

Albert Duarte led the Vikings on the ground with 95 yards on 15 carries.

Mountain View quarterbacks were sacked 12 times by Bell-Jeff (2-0), which outscored the Vikings 28-7 in the second half.

Bell-Jeff running back Jorge Chaidez ran 17 times for 225 yards and two touchdowns.

SANTA ANA - There were positives to be gleaned from West Covina High's opener Friday night: a decent running attack, particularly Isaac Tucker; impressive kickoff returns, averaging more than 28 yards; and debuting punter Robert Rodriguez, who got off a 40-yard effort.

Oh, and the Bulldogs scored a touchdown, too.

That was about it, as Mater Dei - ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 9 in the country - rode star quarterback Matt Barkley's arm and a suffocating defense to a rout at Santa Ana Stadium.

The Monarchs returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, then feasted as Barkley, protected by an offensive line than averages 280 pounds, passed for 309 yards and four scores before departing with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

"People will (ask whether) it's smart to play Mater Dei," West Covina coach Mike Maggiore said. "I think we'll be able to tell at the end of the season. What we get from this, how this affects us - hopefully, we learned some things and keep our heads up."

SAN DIMAS - In a showdown between two high-powered offenses, the San Dimas Saints sprinted out to a 21-0 lead and hung on to defeat South El Monte in a nonleague game on Friday.

"We played very well in the first half," Saints coach Bill Zernickow said. "The second half we just broke down on one of our core values and didn't hang on to the football."

San Dimas (2-0) was led by Nico Barbone. He opened the scoring with touchdown runs of 3, 3 and 7 yards. Barbone finished with 128 yards on 25 carries.

"Nico is a great player," Zernickow said. "Tonight he gained a lot of yards the hard way."

The Eagles (0-1) cut the lead to 21-14 after Manny Acosta caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Jose Garay. South El Monte had one last opportunity with 2:17 remaining, but the Saints defense forced the Eagles to turn the ball over on downs.

"Our defense played great tonight," Zernickow said. "We just need to continue to play Saints football over four quarters."

CHINO HILLS - Roddy Layton gathered his team Friday night for a last-second pregame film session. The Diamond Ranch High School football coach didn't have film of Chino Hills in mind, though. Instead, he popped in Mike Tyson's greatest knockouts.

The inspirational film, though, didn't feature Buster Douglas' KO of Tyson, but that might have been on the Panthers' minds as they scored a victory over heavily favored Chino Hills.

Joe Carrillo completed 9 of 14 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown.

The Diamond Ranch quarterback had 75 yards and two touchdown runs to complement running back Brian Spirlin's 171 yards and two touchdowns.

"All week, we were hearing about how we were going to lose 30-0," Diamond Ranch safety Shelton Miles said. "We wanted to prove ourselves."

Diamond Ranch (1-1) converted 8 of 10 third-down conversions, including 6 of 6 in a first half that ended with a 28-14 Panthers lead.

UPLAND - Perhaps it was the defensive effort that sparked Upland in Friday night's 14-0 season-opening win against Charter Oak.

After all, the Scots turned back the Chargers four times in the first half from inside Upland's 20-yard line.

Perhaps it was the streaker who jumped out of the crowd and ran around the stadium before being detained by authorities.

After that incident, Charter Oak's inexperience started to show. Upland was able to convert on its scoring opportunities, an interception and a 16-yard return of a poor punt.

Upland quarterback Joshua Nunes, who struggled along with his offense throughout the first half, broke open a scoreless tie with an 8-yard run with 6:22 remaining in the game. The Scots sealed the win when Jay Silas scooped a punt that had bounced 12 yards backwards and ran untouched into the end zone.

It was not a pretty game, on either side.

"We played good defense," said Upland coach Tim Salter. "We just couldn't get anything going in the first half. We're still learning the offense, trying to get the right guys in the right mix. We weren't playing with a lot of confidence."

Charter Oak had 140 yards in the first half, but finished with 153 for the game. Quarterback Chris Allen completed 11-of-24 for 119 yards, but Darren Scales picked him off twice, the last one setting up a short 18-yard scoring drive.

"We couldn't catch a break," said Charter Oak coach Lou Farrar, starting his 40th year in the coaching ranks. "We had our chances in the first half, and we ran out of gas in the second. But if we can't score from a half-yard out, well ... "

"And we can't be throwing a pass over the middle late in the middle."

A bad snap cost Charter Oak a field-goal attempt on its first possession, a 24-yard attempt was wide and Allen was sacked by Scales at the Upland 15 on fourth down. Allen was stopped at the one by Gianni Olivas on the final play of the game.

"We just didn't have enough firepower," Farrar said.

What a tough night for the sgv, at least it wasn't only West Covina. Mater Dei looks like a jaggernaught team this year, all I saw were Monarchs flying out of the spread offense streaking down field & Barkley threading the needle, tremendous team speed, they just might win state this year.

with that score over Covina, although Bonita just about did the same thing to the Colts, so are Glendora & Bonita really good teams or are the Colts real weak?
I knew Trabuco Hills was tough but I still thought South Hills would beat them. Duarte Bounces back with a win over a supposedly tough Monrovia, so what does that say about Ayala beating them 35 to 7, Ayala just might be in the running for the Sierra league crown, did they win again tonight?
Charter Oak at least made it closer with Upland this time, Upland is usually High Caliber so that
could be a good thing for the Chargers. Amats
score suprised me, I thought they would of kept it closer to O.Lu.,we'll see what happens with Hart.

I couldnt go and see the Colts play tonight and after getting home and seeing the score I am glad I didnt have the opportunity, so much for second guessing Glendoras offense.

I hoped Covina had more gas left in the tank talent wise but after seeing that score I am disappointed, no astericks next to this years game for sure.

I still think highly of the boys and as always I am a Covina homer, this will never change.

Keep working hard guys and remember VVL victories are what take you to CIF, the rest is a tune up and even though you took a loss tonight the experience will help you when league starts.

Lancers won big tonight. OLU Lancers that is. These guys have some big time players particularly their 6'5" stud TE/DE #85 Ayers, he killed Amat single handedly on offense and defense. Game was over at half time as far as I was concerned. OLU didn't waste any time putting up points on the board and any respect for that matter with their on site kicks while leading the game, fake punt conversion, fake field goal attempt conversion and many more 4th down conversions.

Amat was outgunned, outcoached and outclassed tonight. Sorry coaches, but you guys did a piss poor job preparing your kids for this game. Too many errors, procedures, off sides etc. when Amat was in a position to gain some momentum, some player would kill it by a boneheaded penalty. Only bright spot I observed tonight was McClanahan, sophomore QB, he's got one hell of an arm with some nice completions after replacing Lenhart.

Upland beat CO 14-0 but the game was 0-0 midway through the 4th. One big play got upland inside the ten and they punched it in. The other came from a five yard punt that was returned 20 yds for a TD. CO gave up one first down in the first half and had the ball inside the ten with two missed FG's and stopped on the one on the last play of the first half.

I'll tell you why so much hype on S. El Monte. The best QB to WR combo in the valley. Coach runs a great offense. Our guys are bigger, stronger, and faster then we've been in the past. Come tomorrow I'll be looking for those apologies!!!!

I think tonights match up between Damien and St. John Bosco isn't getting enough attention. This is a game that came down to refs. and a field goal last season. If these two teams compete at the same level, tonight could be won for the ages. My thought...St. John Bosco 21 Damien 28. Bet on it!

Baldwin Park does have talent, and it is not being showcased at all. This is from a bigtime fan, former alum, and now my kid IS with the program. Went to the B.P. VS AZUSA game and only 1 thought came to mind. Whoever the O.C. is at B.P. is terrible. I also caught the Hall of Fame game and put 2 and 2 together. Very similiar calls. B.P. actually has some talented kids and looked pretty good for the most part. But please O.C. give your kids a chance to win. From the grumbling in the stands, apparently im not the ony one thinking this.
