Steve Ramirez and Fred J. Robledo going head-to-head throughout the season.
Records:
Robledo: Last week (19-6); Season (49-13)
Ramirez: Last week (20-5); Season (46-16)
Notes:
Last week was another case in point why picking winners in high school football games is so tough. I was able to edge Fred out, thanks in part to another strong showing by Glendora and Western Christian coming up big vs. Bloomington Christian. But we both swung and missed on Long Beach Jordan edging Diamond Bar, Mountain View stepping up to beat Azusa and Garey beating Gladstone.

Saturday's game
St. Anthony vs. Western Christian at Citrus College, noon - Robledo (Western Christian), Ramirez (Western Christian)
Final thoughts:
This is a big week for Valley football, with two featured games - Los Altos travels to La Verne to face Damien, while Glendora goes to Covina to face Charter Oak in the battle for the Mayor Cup. All four teams were ranked in our top 10 last week. South Hills and Bishop Amat have yet to taste victory in the young season, but Claremont and Rancho Cucamonga should be what the doctor ordered this week.

PLAID LAD,
Please share with us your thoughts and feelings about tonight' game. I would be real curious as to what you and your son have to say about the loss. I am being very sincere because you always seem to be extremely insightful and I really want read your perspective.
Cop/Coach,
Is your son a better running back than Phillip? Will your son be the starting running back next year as a sophmore or does he play other positions too? Is your son going to have to wait until his senior year to be the featured running back? You too have been around the game your whole life as a player and a coach so what are your thoughts and feelings about Damien and also your son's future in the program? Is Damien's freshmen team good?

Wow what a game, what an event, what time it was at CO tonight! Both teams were winners and the game was a blast to watch! Thank goodness the refs didn't make the difference in the long run! All the smack talk and like I have said before, we just win! That's CO! I hope Glendora's Brent Marteney gets well and he can play the game he plays so well again! Best of luck in your recovery. We get the bragging rights back on the Mayor's Cup, back where it belongs. I hope the class shows on this blog and we don't hear lucky play or we had a bad night. CO's boys came to play and that they did! How 'bout them linemen, both sides of CO, they did outstanding this evening! Good job boys! Great memories for the seniors! Let's build on this and take it into next week! Another big game, Damien comes to town!

PLAID LAD...
I hear you. There were alot of "ifs" in my post. That was the point. The game is won in the trenches and Glendora will overmatch CO in this area. The "if" measured the fact that the Charger running lanes will probably be clogged all night and CO's runners will not get to the 2nd and 3rd level.
Have fun at the game! See you guys in a few weeks.

Roosevelt Alumni,
Nice of you to defend your fellow alumni but have you read what this guy comes out with. Granted the comments on ELA are unwarranted because alot of us have our roots there, at least I do and we should not forget where we came from ,but this guy has no problem knocking schools or people with a variety of names and put downs. Claims the term " we " have this and we have won that and when you have rings on your fingers, so much of the comments back towards him are justified considering he is some fair weather Freddy and a hang on to the team thats on top now , considering he is a Roosevelt alumni which no knock on them but I don't think they have won any titles lately. Oh and by the way I live in La Puente.

FYI :
Benito Juarez is considered one of Mexico's greatest and most beloved leaders. During his political career he helped to institute a series of liberal reforms that were embodied into the new constitution of 1857. During the French occupation of Mexico, Juarez refused to accept the rule of the Monarchy or any other foreign nation, and helped to establish Mexico as a constitutional democracy. He also promoted equal rights for the Indian population, better access to health care and education, lessening the political and financial power of the Roman Catholic church, and championed the raising of the living standards for the rural poor.
PROUD TO BE COMPARED ...
THANKS ROSIE !!!

Controlling the clock
We all know that COHS is gauging an upset win against GHS tonight. For that to happen Big Lou will need to control the clock and his boys will have to out play GHS at 11 positions.
Coach P on the otherhand will make good use of the clock with his ground game. Weather permitting Coach P will also unleash Kid Kaluzny's short and long game.
With the force generated by (Stryker's) GHS's Mighty-D...CO's offensive efforts will derail. Look for Bowdry, Kovar, C. Young and Horn to have big games tonight as they sweep CO's backfield.
FYI: CO (QB)Allen will learn early what worked for him in the last fews weeks is now working against him. Failed not, because COHS defense will come ready to battle, but will prove by the fourth quarter they are not "battle hard" enough to stop GHS's offensive front line and stout running attack. In the end, GHS will dominate the game clock and the game.

Gotta disagree with your assessment of the COHS(Snowden and Crespo) getting by our (GHS) deep backs on D. There are alot of "If's" in that statement. I know for a fact that Snowden and Crespo combined do not have the wheel speed of Nichols. In fact no one we have played will or will play has his speed. Unless things have changed in the last two weeks of competition, Snowden and Crespo will both have their hands full tonight.
Additionally, beating our LB crew at what they do best will be a tall order to complete for no matter who we pit against. No doubt this is sure to be one to remember.
Best of luck on your game this week.

All the Latinos love to jump on Roosevelt74. I know a couple of you bashers personally and if I were you I'd shut the hell up with the cholo comments and the ELA putdowns. Most of you transplants came from where? Some of your kids would fit right in at Roosevelt. And you know who you are. Silencio por favor. You ain't scoring and pocho points with the USC references. Trojan Man you're the worst kiss ass, no life, where's the party I'll bring the BBQ carne asada eating cara de Benito Juarez wanna be of them all. Have you read your posts? I can't wait until my mijo puts on the plaid. Oh yeah he's only 2 years old. Pull your head out of Glendora's cultural ass THEY DON"T PLAY NICE! Ask the African American family with the Glendora welcoming ornament set fire on their lawn. Body armour jokes coming from Bishop Amat when you send your kids to a place that has more homicides per square mile than Roosevelt's neighborhood ever has. Look it up. Valinda, La Puente, Bassett rank top 10 in the US in aggavated assaults and homicides. Name another Catholic Souther California school that can make that claim? And don't mention Verbum Dei they own Bishop in terms serving their community's needs.

Are you insane? Why not move your kid over to CO where YOU belong? If your son really is a starter for Glendora, I'd be ashamed to have a parent like you.

Based on all measureable facts, predictions, power ratings, skill positions, etc...
GLENDORA: 49
CHARTER OAK: 6
Glendora is just way to much for CO to handle this early in the season. At this stage, Glendora could beat any team in the valley. Freemans Power Ratings seems to agree.

The reason this glendora/CO game is so hard to pick is because in a rivarly game anything can happen. Perfect example is the NV vs SD game last year, even though these two teams are not officially rivals ask anyone from either school and they will say they are, NV came out fired up and beat SD but later went on to lose to Pomona so anything can happen so my pick is going to be CO because for once they are the underdogs in this rivarly and i believe Allen has a hell of a game.

Rosie,
No wonder it smells the way it does in East LA if everyone does everything out of both sides of their @$$ like you guys talk.
One time you say
When you have a couple of rings on your fingers well then you can start talking
but then you say
Funny how the programs that cant get past the first levels are the ones that make the most noise.
then
Its easy to tell who is from Glendora, Damien ,Amat etc.
How contradictory was all of that?
Now you're first sentence may or may not be true, but that's not really here nor there. Yards against Rosemead (no offense Trojan Man) is not the same as yards against O-Lu. He'd still be playing behind Wagner, who had 200+ against Los Osos. McB didn't want to play 2nd fiddle and would be contributing and certainly would look good of Wagner can't go - but he would not be as effective taking those big hits against Los Osos, O0Lu, or Hart. Sure like to have him back, but....
Other losses were not as significant ...really. The lancers would be 0-3 anyway. It's not the same..honest.
Now losing the one to South Hills hurt, even though they are struggling. And I don't hear many talking about their demise or collapse, or that they'll never be the same. Oh, that's right, they are just playing a tough schedule...too!
It's no surprise that the decision that came down in June with him went the way it did in light of this story that was in the news at the very same time in Florida with a Top Ten HS team in the nation
http://blogs.usatoday.com/preprally/2007/07/sex-scandal-may.html
look into that case more..very similiar..and it turned into a BIG mess.
Events like that may be an everday occurance and no big deal at Roosevelt. But you gotta commend amat for having some standards. If the kid learns from this he wins in the long run. And so do the lancers because the younger kids know that there are consequences.

Roughrider74, you are one funny guy. Those who left Amat did so on their own. One QB left before the other because they both thought they were Pat Haden reincarnated and so far they are not living up to what they thought they would do. McBride is carrying them so far and if he goes down well....
Also look at South Hills, they were #1 in the valley and have dropped the first two games, so what's happening there wise guy?
So keep your sense of humor, I guess you need it when you go to the DAY games at your alma mater because who in the hell would want to be in those neighborhoods at night without body armor on?

So tell me rosie what program do you associate yourself with that has rings on their fingers. Why bag on the Tartan fans for being excited about their season so far when you state LA will run the table after being 2-0 same as Glendora. Don't you remeber what happened to LA last year. Here is a hint COIN TOSS.Do us all a favor and just stick to city teams like your alma mater and leave the SGV to us . Believe me we will be fine without the venom you are always spewing.

The fact that Los Altos is going to run the table this year only proves that AMAT is messing with truly legit kids and not able to evaluate good talent.
To all the excited Glendora fans out there if the season were two games lonng you would be champs. We all rise to our own level of incompetency. your a 7-3 team this year at best and hey thats not too shabby.
When you have a couple of rings on your fingers well then you can start talking
Funny how the programs that cant get past the first levels are the ones that make the most noise.
And the bloggers that are associated with these programs are easy to point out, they are allways
acting the same, like grown up hall monitors.
Its easy to tell who is from Glendora, Damien ,Amat etc.
TOM FLORES is still the Raiders best coach.

My turn to weigh in.
I like Glendora over CO. Why? I think that CO's offense gets bogged down versus the Tartan D. If Snowden or Crespo can get into the secondary, they can outrun the Glendora LBs and DBs. They just have to get there. That will be the problem.
If Damien plays Los Altos like they played Claremont, the Conq's will destroy them. The same thing goes for the next 2 games (against CO and Glendora. I think Los Altos wins (with apologies to my son) by 2 TDs.
Me? I will have a blast watching games these next few weeks filled with kids I know and have coached.
Here's to some great football action with no injuries and class kids who play hard and can look each other in the eye after the games with pride in their performance and respect for their opponent.

You talk without thinking and knee jerk response when my response was both apologetic and consoling towards the family. What part of my comment offended you. Clearly nothing of what i said would have offended anyone in Coach K's family or loved ones. See you've continued this dialouge when ALL I said was LET IT GO! People talk , he wasn't perfect and the true measure of a man is how he handles adversity. Grow a set, shut up and leave it alone. Sooner or later, the longer this goes on someone will reference facts about his mistakes and all hell will break loose. Let the man rest in peace that ignorant comment would have died on the vine after Mrs. K response. I'm finished with this topic. Try and do something nice and some a##hole stokes the fire. White flag. Get a life. Let things die on the vine. Coach K was not a perfect man. Mrs. K alluded to that in her response. I never meet the man and in truth don't know his story but the truth is no one is perfect. Maybe Coach K's greatest legacy is the way he conducted himself through his greatest crisis. It's obvious he made an impact on people's lives, had a wife and family who love and miss him dearly and is still a part of the Glendora community long after he passed away. I think that's a pretty good deal. Instead of stoking the fire, and this goes to everyone, let the person have his say. He's probably not the only one who won't let it go. If Coach K made a mistake and people were hurt it only proves he's human. While on the other hand if Coach K conducted himself with the courage that's been expressed here than clearly he was a hero in the end. Best wishes to The K family and God bless you all.

Just a short note to let people know how SPECIAL this Glendora team is . I am NOT a GHS grad ,My Family moved to Glendora a couple of years back . A couple of weeks ago before the season started a few GHS players were selling discount cards in my neighborhood & I was talking with them about the football season . WHAT A GREAT GROUP OF YOUNG MEN . RESPECTFUL , WELL SPOKEN , AND KNOWLEGEABLE about local teams & football . NOT bragging about their team @ ALL . They knew it was A LONG ROAD ahead of them but were anixious to start it . The next week I went to the freshman game against Covina ...WOW , WHAT SUPPORT . I anxiously await my son being able to play @ GHS . I HOPE he becomes what these young men ARE . I coached @ a few High Schools in the SGV mid to late 90's , and sad to say MOST kids had very little respect for adults .GLENDORA PARENTS BE PROUD , in MY opinion not only are the coaches & players @ GHS doing an excellent job this season , your work as parents prior to this season has been ALL CIF PARENTING .

hey QBwtchr/sgvwtchr!
you got to be kidding! you'll eat your words after the game. covina and etiwanda looked bad because glendora looked so good. covina and etiwanda could not execute anything because of the tartan d. co will have the same problem. the tartan d will score more points than co. hell, they have already scored 14 points in two games and the D starters are pulled during the 3rd qtr. you obvisiously have not gone to any glendora games.
Posted by: your kidding right? | September 19, 2007 8:12 AM
Have some decency.
I can't believe what I am hearing on this blog. Claudia Karnowski is a single mom raising 3 kids.
Dean inspired many, many kids and continues to inspire after his death with his motto "Be the Best" which the program had adopted.
I don't need to be here to protect the Karnowski legacy, cause quite frankly, it doesn't need me or anybody else to do that. The legacy lives on because of the greatness of the man and his spirt which continues through his son Travis who plays on the Tartan team. That is why I am writing this now. Travis is a wonderful young man who's courage I deeply admire. I often speak with Travis and enjoy watching his intensity on the football field. He has the tenacity of a pit bull and, thats for sure.

LISTEN,
You guys keep forgetting one very important factor. CO is not a better team over last year. No way. Glendora BEAT them last year when CO had super studs to spare. CO was in the CIF championships. This years Glendora team is exceptionally better than last years team. Were speaking a Freeman Power ranking of 51 in the state - leading all SGV teams. All prep football analysis are picking Glendora over CO with some expecting a slaughter. How can any legit person on this blog pick CO?
Talk all you want about Covina and Etiwanda. But you same blogers will be back on after the CO game saying that CO was weak and the REAL test will be WEST RANCH. Then after that Tartan victory you'll cry no the real test will be El Dorado then after that Tartan victory, and so on.....
You can say what you want on the Blog, the Tartans speak on the field.

SGVPride I hope you never have to watch your father or a loved one lay in a bed, have to be fed, have his diaper changed, breathe on a respirator, can't talk, can't move and be locked in a hell for seven years...I feel sorry for people like you...what a shallow shallow person...shame on you! All of you on this blog need to take a look at the shallow things you write...if you really knew what this family experienced you wouldn't be so shallow as to degrade this man's memory..remember his son plays on the team now and reads this blog...do you think he needs to hear these type of things when he has experienced and still is experiencing the pain of losing his father! And you who are so quick to judge his other son as a drunken failure...well we will see..the son I saw play had heart and after he gets through the pain he is suffering through I predict you will see a great man who will follow in his father's footsteps...a man who worked hard for everything he had... a man who was a great father...a man who had values...a man who developed character in men who played football... yes he made some mistakes but don't we all...Winning is not what is important...what you learn from the game is what matters most....what kind of person you are when you walk off that field is the most important value... no one is perfect and last time I checked we only have one judge...That is God!!!! And unlike you I am not a coward to sign my name.....Claudia Karnoski

there should be a weekly stat thing. saying who is leading the valley in every major catagorie. if there isnt already one
Posted by: sgvpride | September 18, 2007 11:55 PM
you have to take the good and the bad and karnoski had a lot of bad baggage, including being fired at glendora and citrus for money scams and his son is a drunken failure.

I Was at both of the games for Glendora. Game one against Covina was pathetic ya Glendora Looked good but they looked great because Covina was so terrible. Etiwanda game Same thing besides Etiwanda looked a little better then Covina. Etiwanda was over hyped.
This week is a different story. Charter Oak is a much better football team then Etiwanda and Covina combined.
Prediction: Glendora 17
Charter Oak 28

Charter Oak won everywhere but on the scoreboard against Upland and in hindsight probably learned more from losing. Regardless the game is over and ultimately Glendora is a much better team than Upland and again if Charter Oak won Friday night that would be considered an upset. This is the year of the Tartans and for many years Charter Oak has dominated the rivalry but this is probably going to be Glendora's year to celebrate their success not just this week but for many weeks to come leading into the playoffs. Charter Oak whether they win Friday night or not has been very successful for a long time not just in this game but overall for many years. So let Glendora enjoy some recognition and rewards for something they have been long over due to have and that is winning a league championship and getting past the first round in the playoffs. Remember Charter Oak was a league champion and C.I.F. Finalist last year and has other league championships and C.I.F. Final appearances and C.I.F. Championship RINGS! When was the last time Glendora could say that and there's no guarantee that going to occur this year! Everyone should support the entire E.S.G.V. and besides after Friday night Charter Oak fans will want Glendora to be a C.I.F. Champion! So many of these kids on both teams have been competing together for years and last year Charter Oak did their best to represent the Valley and this year Glendora hopefully you will be so fortunate to have the opportunity to play in "The Show" for "The Ring"! Good luck young men your families will be cheering for you win, lose, or tie! We are proud of each of you!

Anonymous at Sept 18 at 7:41 am,
Didn't say Etiwanda is a push over, for all I know they may be as good as Upland, but their 33 to 6 loss to Serano Phelan takes away a little luster from their resume [although Phelan is a perenial D8 power].
Either way it sounds as if Glendora beat them impressively, my point was more on C.Oak being able to hang with Upland until a couple of bad breaks in the last minutes, without those bad breaks, is C.Oak as good as Upland? If so then it will be a great game this Friday.

Trojan man,
I've always been an SC fan since I was a kid,
Its just that I like to see UCLA do good when they aren't playing the Trojans this way it makes SC look better when they do beat the Bruins.

Haven't disappeared - hear daily...almost. However, unlike most claims, amat supporters don't "hijack" other threads. Only when the topic turns.
Right now, the GHS/CO game is the talk of the valley and SHOULD occupy this grey space. Sad to say as that may be for the lancer faithful. I hope that the game lives up to the billing with two adjacent attendance areas.
Good luck to both
Posted by: Joe Amat | September 18, 2007 4:03 PM
We maybe down for now but still have some unfinished business to attend. We have 7 more games to go. Although, I was expecting to be at 1-2 and not 0-3 before the Rancho game. It will probably be a long season for the Lancers. Interesting to see if any major changes will take place if the Lancers fall below .500 at the end of the season?

Posted by: CO Bro | September 18, 2007 1:48 PM
The Tartans defense is so amazing that they would probuly put up more points than CO's offense the whole game...look for Glendora to retain the mayors trophy in a lopsided victory...
by the way big panther...experiance is a very important trait that a team needs to be successful, but a team also needs skills to pull through when when they are facing an equaly matched team...Glendora has all league talent on both offense and defense. CO would be lucky to even put up a fight against Glendora.
Posted by: Tartan Pride | September 18, 2007 1:29 PM
Amat 0-3? Maybe they should suit up McCutcheon for the game and call back Minor and Huma. These are sad days lancer fans
Posted by: dave | September 18, 2007 1:27 PM
Let's not forget...Glednora was not overhyped last year!Aram had them going soemthing like 5-5 and they were not even ranked originally!Plus, the team had to fill wholes at almost every position! They still had a great year managing a 7-3 record behind the wheels of Jordan Edmond and a young stingy defense....Now, the defense has returned 8 or 9 starters at key positions and offensively, have an experienced back in Vega with a poised quarterback wise way past his years...
This season the Tartans deserve the hype...
Its up to them what they want to do with it..
Posted by: panther fan...? | September 18, 2007 1:02 PM
big panther
And one other thing, Glendora did not fall like a brick wall last season. They had a very descent 7-3 season record beating the number one teams 4 different leagues!
Posted by: CO no chance | September 18, 2007 12:40 PM
big panther,
Appreciate your post, but you say you like CO over Glendora for their "Experience" and "Staff"?
Against any other opponent, I would agree. You probally didn't know that Glendora is returning as much experience and probally even more than Charter Oak.
As far as Coaching, Farr et al is without a doubt a top notch coach. But, again, are you overlooking Coach Pasky? Coach P. is undeniably among the top coaches in SGV.
Your last comment was re the home field advantage. That doesn't work well against Glendora as the Tartan supporters traveling almost always cover more bench space than home teams do. Have you been to any Glendora games away?
Good luck, but, I believe all credible sources have Glendora beating CO and some expect a real whipping!
Posted by: CO no chance | September 18, 2007 12:35 PM
Fred,
Glendora has a long way to go to show people that they can play week to week with other teams. I'm a Diamond Ranch fan and we have the same situation with our team . We have to show everyone that we can be ready every week. Glendora was hyped last year but fell like a brick wall. I like charter oak over glendora because of their expierience and their staff plus their at home.
Posted by: big panther | September 18, 2007 12:03 PM
Glendora would have to screw up pretty badly for CO to have even the slightest chance. I don't see that happening with this well oiled Tartan machine. I think QB Allen will be saked at least 4 times. Look for Tartan D to outscore the Chargers.
Posted by: SGV ALLTHEWAY | September 18, 2007 11:54 AM
Coach Karno was an excellent coach who led Glendora to CIF glory, later in life he fought a brave battle against ALS....why would anyone ignore this coachs skill and not admit that he was one of the greatest coaches (if not the greatest coach) in Glendora football history. The 2007 Tartans will prove that they deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the 1989 CIF team. The presnet teams defense will take them to the promised land.
Posted by: Tartan Pride | September 18, 2007 11:50 AM
I like Jimmy the Greeks score with Glendora over CO. 31-7 is right there with the defense we have. We will spank CO bad.

Having a hard time following your post.
Charter Oak lost to Upland and Glendora beat Etiwanda. So you give kudos to CO and question Glendora's strength? Anybody can lose to a tough team, but you must credit a team that wins regardless of the challenge. Etiwanda is no push over. CO would have had their hands full with this team and probally would have lost.
