Steve Ramirez and Fred J. Robledo going head-to-head throughout the season.
Records:
Robledo: Last week (18-6); Season (67-19)
Ramirez: Last week (17-7); Season (63-23)
Notes:
I was able to pick up a winner on Steve this week, but did it the hard way. We both missed on the same five games by picking Glendora over Charter Oak, Wilson over Schurr, Northview over Rosemead, Brea Olinda over Diamond Bar, and Western Christian over St. Anthony. Steve got me by picking Whittier over South El Monte, but I picked up the extra winner because I had Sonora over Rowland, and Alhambra over Arroyo, which he both had going the other way.
Thursday's games
West Ranch vs. Glendora at Citrus College, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Glendora), Ramirez (Glendora)
Diamond Bar vs. Troy at Fullerton, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Troy), Ramirez (Diamond Bar)
Friday's games
Gladstone at Duarte, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Duarte), Ramirez (Duarte)
Bonita vs. Northview at Covina District Stadium, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Bonita), Ramirez (Northview)
Damien at Charter Oak, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Charter Oak), Ramirez (Charter Oak)
South Hills at Fullerton, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Fullerton), Ramirez (South Hills)
Los Altos at St. Francis, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Los Altos), Ramirez (Los Altos)
Rancho Cucamonga at West Covina, 7 p.m. - Robledo (West Covina), Ramirez (West Covina)
Montebello at Wilson, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Wilson), Ramirez (Wilson)
Temple City at Rosemead, 7:00 p.m. - Robledo (Rosemead), Ramirez (Rosemead)
Sierra Vista vs. Azusa at Citrus College, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Azusa), Ramirez (Sierra Vista)
Don Lugo at Rowland, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Don Lugo), Ramirez (Don Lugo)
South El Monte at Corona del Mar, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Corona del Mar), Ramirez (Corona del Mar)
Workman at La Puente, 7 p.m. - Robledo (La Puente), Ramirez (La Puente)
Baldwin Park at El Monte, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Baldwin Park), Ramirez (Baldwin Park)
Arroyo at El Rancho, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Arroyo), Ramirez (Arroyo)
Diamond Ranch at Ayala, 7 p.m. - Robledo (DRanch), Ramirez (DRanch)
Nogales at Montclair, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Montclair), Ramirez (Nogales)
Final thoughts: The Montview League opens on Friday, and if anyone has a remote chance of beating Duarte, it's Gladstone. But don't see it happening, so the Falcons essentially can wrap up the league title with a win at home. Also wondering if Charter Oak can go back-to-back against two of the best teams in the Sierra with a win at home against Damien, and how will Northview hang with Bonita a week after losing to Rosemead? Is El Monte quietly becoming a Mission Valley League contender? The Lions are 2-1 at home against 2-1 Baldwin Park, which is another tough game to call. Also, expect Los Altos to avenge last year's loss against St. Francis. I'm going with West Covina to make it three straight against Rancho Cucamonga, and think South Hills will go down at Fullerton.

re: GHS WIN OVER WEST RANCH
By now you have had the opportunity to read the Friday morning Tribune. Sports Writer John Honell said it all.
The win placed GHS back on track to complete the task at hand....and that is to enter league competition with a degree of confidence and experience....which is the only successful survival to victory in the tough Sierra League.
The victory over a rated and talented team like West Ranch is something Coach P and Styker can now build on. As good as it was to watch GHS execute, several adjustments still need to be made to hone our play offensively and defensively.
Hats-off to GHS Special Teams...you guys slammed the door to any progress attempted by West Ranch and proved beyond a doubt just how stingy you can play ball....great job to all!
With another short week before us its time to kicked it into high gear and be totally prepared this Thursday for the CIF Champs of El Dorado HS.
FYI: Plaidy and fans are proud of you all.

RESPONSE TO: Joe Colt
I hear what you are saying. Unfortunately, I never considered our bantering as trash. As much as I backed GHS on this grey space...Aram was paid to prodded back with his two cents which never cause me to disrespect the person....Additionally, we each supported our own opinions, views, and differences....and that my good friend was what made it fun to toss the ball back and forth with him. The caveat to this is that Freddy inherited a popular site and to maintain it's growth he and his management know exactly what it needs to stay healthy.
FYI: Thanks for the blog-back...good to hear from you...best of luck this season.

Plaid Lad, (If this is really you)
I am suprised that you have supported Arams treatment of the blog, he trashed you worse than most bloggers on here and never respected your opinion.
Reread some of the old posts, he disrespected you often.
Fred's doing a great job in my opinion with more threads and less animosity.

OPINION
Fred, we all know that you are new to this blog site. So, before I rip you (alittle) I will give you some latitude.
Aram was big on ideas that caught more attention them some thought he was deserving. Now, departed I find it hard to pound any keys when part of Aram's written polish gone.
Fred, to be honest with you....you're boring!.. and maybe to overcome this fault as the leader of our SGV blog site you need to step up and establish yourself like Aram did....which some bloggies respected and others failed to respect...the reality is....that was what made this site exciting to read.
By (you) not being more assertive you loss a sense of respect, control, and credibility.
Understanding what makes SGV players, coaches, and fans come back for more is understanding who and what we are as a community. Individual team support does not separate it unifies.
So, pick your poison....or watch as your briar's patch grows out of control.
PLAID LAD
FYI: Best of luck to all SGV teams this weekend.

I've heard that a few times now on this blog,
I just don't see it, with all their starters
that came back how do you call that rebuilding?
those boys are a year older & a year stronger, I can only see them as a better team then last year.

Good luck to all & especially to those that play schools from outside of the SGV this week.
Glendora vs West Ranch - This will be another tough game for the Tartans, West Ranch is 3 & 0 & from the tough Santa Clarita Valley [Foothill league], with wins over good teams such as Corona & Lancaster the Tartans will have their hands full, I think the Tartans will take out last weeks frustrating loss on West Ranch and win a close one.
South Hills vs Fullerton - I got a feeling after last weeks blowout over Claremont, the Huskies
have put things together and could be turning into the team that was hyped over the summer.
South Hills by 14 pts.
Los Altos vs St Francis - Another good matchup,
Los Altos seems to be better than I thought they were earlier in the season and is a team that appears to be solid throughout. St Francis is a quality program year in & year out and will make this a tough game, but I don't think they are as good as last year, I pick Los Altos by a Touchdown.
Diamond Ranch vs Ayala - D. Ranch looks to be the team to beat in the SGV, Ayala started impressive
with their blowout over Duarte but then had blowout losses to Corona & Alta Loma, I don't
think this will be close. D.Ranch wins big.
West Covina vs Rancho Cucamonga - After Mater Dei
I thought Rancho C. would be another loss for the Bulldogs but I've seen some improvements in the last couple of weeks in the young Bulldogs as
they gain more experience. Rancho has 2 losses to quality teams[Amat & la Quinta] and a win over a decent team [Carter], this will be a good match up, I'll take the Bulldogs by 3.

CO Bro,
Hey man thanks, And thanks for our reality check last week to. Your young men looked strong for a team that was supposed to be on a rebuild year. Coach Lou had them prepared and as you know I think Coach is a class act and tells it like it is. My kind of guy! Behind my "Bagpipers", Amat and CO are the two other teams I'm always pulling for. I wish I had the time I use to have so I could hop over and see more of you guys and Amat.
I hope we learned from what happen and turn that loss to you guys into a positive. We strayed away from the fundamentals last week.
Beers last Friday would have been great to drown the frustration. You guys have a great rest of the year and I'm sure you and I will have our say again soon.
I am OUT!

THE PROBLEM AT B.P. IS PRETTY EVIDENT. GAMES THAT SHOULD BE WON, THEY DO WIN BECAUSE OF SUPERIOR TALENT TO THOSE TEAMS WE PLAY. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO TOUGHER TEAMS, I.E. WEST COVINA, HARVARD WESTLAKE LAST YEAR, COVINA, SAN DIMAS, TEAMS THAT REQUIRE ALITTLE BIT OF COACHING, THEY STRUGGLE.
TO ME, IT SEEMS AS IF WE GET OUTCOACHED AGAINST EVERY TOUGH TEAM ON THE SCHEDULE, AND THESE ARE VERY WINNABLE GAMES. B.P. HAS NOT WON A GAME AGAINST A TOUGH OPPONENT IN THE LAST FEW YEARS...

Bravetown, You are probably right, BP should win, but I am picking the upset. BP has the talent but until Heggins get control of his offense I will pick anyone against the Braves. Love Sanchez and the job he does with the talent that he has at El Monte. Plus, BP almost (should have) lost to Azusa. Keep your fingers crossed and Go Lions!

glendora o line. That makes no sense. Can you clarify so I can understand? You lost me. Linebackers came late?
Posted by: Mayors cup is ours | September 24, 2007 9:25 PM
just a question for those close to bp. whats the deal with questioning the bp assistants? are all of the coaches surrounding heggins that bad? it appears by record that they've turned around the program, werent they like 2-8 and 3-7 under ward. and since heggins and his staff took over they have been 7-4 twice and made the first round of the playoffs? am i missing something...is there a specific gripe with any aspect of the team? line, receivers, backs, qbs, linebackers, dbs? i mean whats the big complaint here? the qb just threw for over 300 yards sounds like an ok offense to me, but maybe i'm missing something...please elaborate
Posted by: brave supporter | September 24, 2007 9:19 PM
i watched tape on the game too and if it wasnt for charter oak bringing their linebackers late there would have been no sacks
Posted by: glendora o line | September 24, 2007 9:16 PM
I counted 8 sacks. I would bring the jv line up after that performance. What do you have to lose other than another game?

Its hard to hit on your heels pussycat. Your name 101 is fitting to your title, 'just beginning" i hope that didnt fly to high over your head. If Dunaway saw what you typed he would tell you to stick a cork in it.

How many years has Charter Oak beaten Los Altos in row?
Posted by: Just wondering... | September 24, 2007 7:49 PM
los altos will be prepared its not only gano who prepares the team its former players that know what it takes to win championships like felipe aguilar, and sal ortiz

1) LA does not have a HUGE line! Center = 5'9, Guards = 5'9, 5'10, Tackles = 6'1, 6'2. None of them weigh over 260. It's not about them being HUGE...they are disciplined, smart, strong and have GUTS!
2) St. Francis is a GOOD team. Gano knows this. LA lost last year at LA and now they have to go over there and try to steal one back? Good news is that LA is tougher than last year and SF is not nearly as good. Bad news is LA's weak secondary will be exposed this week by an above average SF passing game. Look for a high scoring game...something like LA-38, SF-31
3) Lee Fair is a genious when it comes to preparing a team for their opponent. Gano is the emotional motivator, Fair is the tactician, and the rest of that coaching staff fills their respective roles well. That, folks, is why LA is successful year in and year out. It helps to have guys like McBride, but had he never chosen to come to LA...the coaching staff would still have them exceeding expectiations.
Posted by: LA Conq | September 24, 2007 6:49 PM
Fred,
Tucker from West Co. would be a good call for player of the week, He is one of the top backs in the valley and should prove that by seasons end, [he's one of the sleepers that got overlooked when the top ten backs came out]. Also there will be a great match up at Thyberge field this week when West Co. plays D2 Rancho Cucamonga, it will be a good challenge for the young Bulldogs
to see where they stand at this point of the season, certainly a candidate for game of the week, or at the very least its a game that stirs a lot of interest.

Okay, we are back at it again...Thursday's game with West Ranch may suprise those not CONCENTRATING on the job at hand.
If the plaid crew learned anything from the CO game...is that we need to stay focussed and not become complacent or....expect another clubbing.
Staying with what works will surely prove the stronger edge against a young team like this.
West Ranch has a large student population to draw from and in the near future they will prove to be the next power house from the Santa Clarita Valley.
Adjustments and an elevated level of execution will prove just what GHS needs this week to pull off a victory.
FYI: MTC (Mikey) welcome back to the farm (lol)...heard you went out yonder to poo-poo and the pigs ate you....glad to know that was just a nasty rumor.

After seeing both teams play. I would say that Northview is in for another lost. Bonita is Big and Physical. They have Big Receivers and a bigger D-line & O-line than Northview. Bonita Defense will put presure on Robles. Bonita O-Line will wear Nortview down. It may be close for a quater, Bonita will come ot on top.

Damien's shortcomings are now apparent for anyone who's interested to become aware. I observed these shortfalls during the first half of the first game vs. Riverside Poly.
While I root for the Spartans, the lack of competent lower level coaching is now beginning to have an impact on the Varsity level. The problem is, no one on the La Verne campus has put this part of the puzzle together yet. Bob Biaz was a coach on the lower level at DHS for years, and he was done being an effective coach back in the early 1990s.

You mention LA's line size, but in reality, Damien looked much more imposing. They had at least three players who looked 6'5 to 6'7 and well over 300, at least from my perspective.
I do not know what it is, but Gano or someone on his staff, sure knows how to prepare, teach, motivate and coach O lineman. There are many games in the past that I attended where I was sure our O line was gonna get smacked, based on the opposing teams size, only to have LA get the job done.
I hope they keep their streak alive Friday, looks like league is gonna be a real battle.
Posted by: Conq'76 | September 24, 2007 12:46 PM
Regarding this statment "Damien definitely has the talent to beat CO but...not the coaching. Damien has been shut-out in the 2nd quarter, two games in a row!" I meant 2nd half!
Posted by: benchwarmer | September 24, 2007 12:44 PM
Damien definitely has the talent to beat CO but...not the coaching. Damien has been shut-out in the 2nd quarter, two games in a row! Why? No coaching. It is obvious Morrison and his coaching crew ARE NOT making the right adjustments during half-time. Alot of fresh legs and talent are sitting on the bench while he keeps his exhausted, bruised up game starters in without any rotations. Imagine what rotating in fresh legs could've/would've done against McBride. But Morrison refuses to rotate fresh legs and energy in and leaves a whole bunch of talent sitting on the bench. It is frustrating as #$%^ to watch good solid leads fading away and like last week, resulting in a loss to LA.
Note to CO. Just watch the game films from Claremont and LA, you will figure out how to handle Damien - its the same ol' same ol, week after week!

I will be surprised if Los Altos is surprised, because Gano rarely looks past anyone and certainly is not going to look past someone who beat them last year.
Over on the Star-News Blog they refer to Rosemead and St. Francis in the same breath when talking about potential "contenders". Now, no disrespect intended, but if Rosemead is considered a contender and St. Francis along side them, I have to believe that the rolling Conq's are going to have a strong chance to avenge last years loss.
By the looks of things, it appears to me that LA's worst enemy may be LA. I keep harkening back to last years 4-0 start, losing the next 4, bouncing back and making a strong play-off run after getting a lucky break on a coin toss.
I hope Gano can keep them focused, and if the intensity and humility exhibited by McBride is indicitive of the teams attitude, I am fairly confident that last years mid-season swoon will be avoided.

Bulldog, good call, I won't give it away, But lets just say there's a good chance its Tucker:)..
Game of the week, not completely sure yet. On the surface, its probably Charter Oak-Damien, but we need to spread the coverage around, we've done a lot with those teams the last couple weeks. Bonita-Northview is good too, but Northview's been on the cover and Bonita will be the game of the week (next week) in the smudge pot vs. San Dimas...It's a tough call with the remaining games, I'll probably know by tomorrow.
