Area's best receivers

| | Comments (51) |

Above: South Hills' Brandon Parham making a tough catch against Los Altos

There is room for two, and sometimes three receivers on the Tribune All-Area first team. We have a great collection of wideouts, but we've narrowed it to the top ten (in no particular order).

Tommy Cogburn, South El Monte -- Obviously one of the most talked about entering the season. He had a slow start but has lived up to expectations of late, helping the Eagles go to 3-0 in the MVL. He has 54 receptions for 810 yards and 9 TDs.

Daniel Limon, Sierra Vista -- Area's leading receiver with 47 receptions for 1,101 yards and 9 TDs.

Brandon Parham, South Hills -- Who would have thought the starting quarterback at the beginning of the season would be on this list. He has great hands and big play ability. He's averaging 18.9 yards a catch with five touchdowns after starting at wideout in week three. Huskies are undefeated with him at receiver.

Donnie McWhirter, Western Christian -- Small school consideration because his numbers are so good, 48 receptions, 1,090 yards and 13 TDS.

Andrew Romero, Wilson -- I haven't seen him, but reporters who have rave about his athleticism and catching ability. He has 39 receptions for 667 yards.

Kyle Warren, Diamond Bar -- Maybe it helps when your brother is also the quarterback. But there's no doubt he's among the valley's elite.

Kevin Jones, Northview -- Very good playmaking receiver with 467 yards and seven touchdowns.

Mikey Harrell, Charter Oak -- With 36 receptions for 386 yards and three touchdowns, he doesn't have the numbers of the others, partly because the Chargers' offense is so versatile. But ask anyone, and they'll tell you he's among valley's elite.

Tanner Zylstra, Bonita -- Marveled at Zylstra when I watched him against San Dimas. If we had a draft, I'm guessing he would be a top three pick.

Frank Lopez, Bishop Amat -- If the Lancers were having a better season, there would be more talk about this guy. He has great hands, and has 27 receptions for 415 yards.

Duarte Rocks,

What does that say about your DB's? He was double covered and still got the TD.

"Do the government pay you": Yes they do.

"unemployment": Nope, got a job.

"promote your school": Warrior Pride, that's all.

"You guys got lucky we had a short week of practice": Nice try, but a TRULY good team would overlook such adversity and find a way.

"Good luck in Playoffs cuz u gonna need it": Thank you for your wishes.

Duarte Rocks said:

LPalum,

He's not on the list because he sucks. Do the government pay you enough unemployment for you to hang out here to promote your school? You guys got lucky we had a short week of practice. Good luck in Playoffs cuz u gonna need it.

That wide receiver from La Puente isn't all that bad either. I'm glad he's not on this list because this way, other teams will continue to underestimate his speed and his abilities.

Heckle,

Since you have no clue, let me fill you in. Students have to BUY their books at Amat, everything from textbooks to workbooks to studyguides, etc..., I MEAN EVRYTHING.

So what does that mean? MONEY! Sell the books and get cash in the pocket. You should go to the book sale they have in August where parents and students sell thier books from the previous year to the next class coming in. It is a mad house but a blast to see and be part of the wheeling and dealing. Why buy a new book for $100 when you can buy it used from another student for half the price?

The story is true, plus I looked it up in the Lancer Life Handbook and theft of school or other students property is grounds for expulsion from the school besides the many other things listed in that section.

BTW not only do I pay for my sons books, I also pay for your kids books, if you have any, with the taxes I pay.

Your welcome.

Joe Amat said:

Heckle,

I can tell you where most of the cameras are. Been there for a while. They've nailed more than a couple thieves and taggers. Not saying that "Too Bad's kid was one of those...but could be.

So about those bridges....

Heckle said:

Joe Amat, Are you buying too bads story? If so, I got a nice bridge you might be interested in. Matter of fact, I got a special 3 bridges for the price of 2

Why did that kid steal books?
Does Big brother Amat have a book black market?
PSSST, Yo Buddy, I got your history, your math, your science books right here. I'll make ya a deal. 3 for the price of 2. Jus cuz I like your face..Your story is a little fishy..

Cameras...Police....???

and you're talking about Big Brother and safety?

Too Bad said:

Ray,
I forgot to add, your kid is safe in a public school alright. Just make sure he's wearing his body armor when he walks out the door in the morning.

Too Bad said:

Ray,
Yes there are cameras, just like your bank, grocery store, fast food restaurant, liquor store, drug store, department stores, malls and their parking lots, etc...

Heck probably even where you work. they are watching you right now!

Kids are safe at Public schools?

Apparently you have never taught in one.

Amat is covered with video cameras?
Sounds more like Big Brother Amat, than Bishop Amat. I guess with thieves and such running around there, thats what you gotta do. I am glad my kids are safe in public schools.

I've read some other bloggers about this and that of each receiver and did some research. Half of these receivers play nobody. I've been following Ayala on their Cinderalla story from going 0-10 last year to now 6-2, 3-0 in league and a player named David Quiroga is by far the best receiver I have seen and is only a Jr. He started all throughout last year as a sophomore and had nearly 800 all purpose yards about 500 yards through the air with Tds running and catching the ball. This year already he is fifteenth in the state sixth in the southern section out of 500+schools #1 in the Sierra League with 700+ receiving and well over a thousand all purpose with a total of eleven Td's 50+ catches through eight games of the season. I don't know if SGV covers Ayala but did notice you make big deals about teams from the Sierra League so figured I would give some recognition to Ayala and who I think is the best receiver/offensive athlete David Quiroga.

I have seen three of the guys on the list. All games were againt San Dimas. Zylstra of Bonita,Cogburn of SEM, and Jones of NV.
In my opinion Zylstra was by far the best.Had his way with the SD defense.Dont remember much about Cogburn (saw him in week 2)believe he scored a TD and Jones of NV was unimpressive.

Go Saints!!!
Go SD Band!!!

His dad Richard Parham was a monster LB and a vicious hitter during the late 80's for the Olympians....yes I said the Olympians when they both had Parham and Marshawn Thompson what a duo! Standing at 6'3' 230 lbs, he intimidated RB's by just staring down at them. The goold ole days at Bassett, man have times changed.

Hey Anonymous,

NO ONE from amat has been offended at all. Nor is anyone defending anyone. Unless you think that an amat poster that took offense to an amat player being honored with inclusion on the best recivers list...and bringing it to everyones attention that his season is over. Usually peopel complain about who is NOT on a list. The initial article said:

Frank Lopez, Bishop Amat -- If the Lancers were having a better season, there would be more talk about this guy. He has great hands, and has 27 receptions for 415 yards.

Well now there IS more talk...and for the wrong reason. His end of the season stats will be 27 receptions for 415 yards. He won't be one of the best recievers over the final two weeks of the season.

...and like I said..."Parham, what a stud!!"

Anonymous said:

have you noticed it is always the Amat fans that get offended easily and always feel the need to defend themselves...I agree with you Fred. this was receiver blog...just delete the whole thing and start over

Fact said:

All I meant to say was Frank Lopez is a good reciever but he lacked in the lcassroom and Amat does not take that or anything else from anyone breaking thier conduct rules including grades. Athlete are no exception. I hope coach Nieto the baseball coach leaves Frank Lopez alone to get his grades up so he can have him back on the Diamond to play baseball for him. If coach Nieto thinks, well he is not playing football anymore.. get over here and starting taking BP then he is doing this kid a diservice and not letting him concentrate on his grades. Coaaches need to know when to help a players grades before putting him back on the playing field. Frank is a senior and he needs to graduate first before playing for any team at AMAT. Hope Nieto understands this kids background and position and puts his schooling first and not his won loss record.

Here's an example of tough standards at Amat.

During my sons freshman year, a fellow student whose locker was right next to his, got a hold of his locker combination, over the shoulder, of course. One morning, my son opened his locker and bang!, all his books were gone. He reported it to the VP and then they reviewed the video tapes. A couple of days later, that kid was history.

You know who I really felt sorry for in that incident was for his parents. I'm sure they had high hopes for him but all it took was one dumb mistake and now he's gone.

Perhaps someone can tell me what would have been the punishment in a public school environment.

Joe Amat said:

It CAN only get better, and it appears to me that people that matter are starting to realize some of the things that they may have to do to ensure that it happens. They can't let the slide continue. I tried to warn them, as did others, but....

and just to get the thread back on track, the performance of Parham at South Hills cannot be lost in the shuffle. He starts the year as a QB, but realizes (with a little "nudge" from the coaches) that he can help the team more at reciever...and he's blowing up. Doing what's best to help the team is what it is all about...not moping and groaning and transferring because you are unhappy with your position or PT. It's not about "being the man" it's about becoming a man!
Congrats to Parham and the great example that he's setting.

*and BTW, great comment on RG : )

TM,
Sorry I piled on, but the point someone made was that an *amat reciever * on the list is no longer playing due to failing to meet those standards. Another is no longer at the school for failing to meet other standards. You can't help your teammates on the field if you don't take care of business off the field. I'm sure that when you played or coached and this happened, you felt let down by those that couldn't play. I know I did.

Maybe this is a tough lesson fro some kids to learn. HS's need to take care of it now beacuse, as we see in the paper almost daily, it gets worse for athletes as tehy move up the ladder.

Good Grades said:

If you are taking AP classes and can't keep a 2.0, you won't be in those AP classes for long. A base grade average is a requirement to play - and to progress in school, (and, come on, a 2.0 really doesn't take much effort for the average student). Never lower the standards, there will always be someone ready to lower their effort! High expectations are a good thing on and off of the football field!

Good Luck this week everyone - May the best teams win!

Joe Amat said:

1FAN,
I don't see anyone "putting down" any public school. Simply stated, things happen at amat that require you to remove yourself from enrollment that, if at a public school, might get you a slap on the wrist, sent to the dean, or maybe even swept unber the rug as it was at Miami-Dade Northwestern HS, the best team in teh nation last season.

"A year ago, the team's star running back, Antwain Easterling, was accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl on a school bathroom floor. Northwestern allowed Easterling to play in the Dec. 9 Class 6A championship game, just days after he was charged with lewd and lascivious battery, and the Bulls defeated Lake Brantley 34-14, with Easterling rushing for 157 yards.

On June 6, former Miami Northwestern principal Dwight Bernard was indicted for failing to report the charges of an unlawful sex act to police. A grand jury probing the incident released a report entitled, "Justice Intercepted -- the All-Consuming Power of Football" and faulting Bernard for focusing on efforts to get the Bulls to the state championship game and claiming Bernard was involved in a coverup. Bernard, who was removed from his post in March, faces a third-degree felony of official misconduct. Last week, Northwestern's athletic director, Gregory Killings, resigned. rand jury report said more than a dozen school officials were aware of the allegations against Easterling, which surfaced in November though the incident allegedly took place Sept. 16, according to police reports.
--from usatoday

Public and private is different in many areas...and that's neither good or bad...they have differnt missions. Public schools MUST educate those that show up...private schools get to choose who they accept. As a parent...you decide what's more important, and what environment you want your child in.

Trojan Man said:

Bishop Amat has standards ... GREAT . This is the BEST RECEIVER THREAD .Enough TALK about the CODE/STANDARDS .

TM

Anonymous said:

Standards at Amat also include personal standards that you are held accoutable for. Grades, Behavior, Dress Code, Drugs,Intimidation of another student to name a few. Athletes feel because they are a star, for whatever reson they are exempt from the above, but not at Amat we put the school before the athlete when it comes to these infractions. Other High Schools administrators look the other way when it concerns a Star student athlete and their so called Rules or Standards. Where do we draw the line when it comes to breaking the rules and looking the other way for Wins in the sports area of a school?

1FAN said:

here we go again.... Amat bloggers need not to put public schools down because as of right now I think any SGV high school team will give you guys a good game heck and maybe win..
Cant wait for next year to see how many players leave Amat. West Covina has a VERY GOOD young team this should be a place to go next year for all you Amat players going to leave for a winning school. Heck our safty right now is from Amat #5 and he is a good player and is doing well.

AMAT 73 said:

anonymous 9:50,
The code is what sets an AMAT athlete apart from mainly public school athletes. Grades do matter and since we have no shop or your so called run of the mill classes you must perform in the classroom while taking the kind of classes that will prepare you for your college career. To change those standards and lower grade requirements just to have a better football team is not what AMAT is about.

David Quiroga from Ayala. Hands down best receiver in the area if not southern section. He is sixth overall in southern section, 15th in the state and top 200 in the nation. He single handidly, with the help from Matt Baca, destroyed Damien with 4 touchdowns not to mention the havoc he has brought to other schools. The kid is double and triple teamed and still comes up with big plays. I guess if he lives in San Gabriel Valley or went to Damien you would know. a fan

FredJ said:

Ayala's out of our coverage area.

you keep failing to mention David Quiroga from Ayala High School. Hands down the best receiver in the area. 11 touchdowns, 800 yards with over 1000 all purpose yards and 50 plus catches. Focus on the real players and better schools. Not these little div. 5 and 7 schools. They can't compete at this level. Give the kid from Ayala some props.....a fan

Lets think for a minute: if someone was to get shut down, they wound not have any yards, let alone touchdowns. These 2 players have both

Having Jones (Northview) and Limon (SV) is a Joke. They play practically nobody and when they do they get shut down. Come on Fred. I'll take a Charter Oak, Glendora, or Damien kid over those two.

While thats crazy!!! I dont understand how u left Thomas Clarkson from Diamond Ranch out of the top 10 WR's in the area he's been hurt for the last 2weeks but that doesn't mean hes not among the top WR's. He has 450 yards recieving 25 receptions 19yard avg per catch & 3 TD's in just 6 games. Also DR has two other desent WR's so he's not the only WR that Carrillo has to throw 2, unlike a few of those other WR's there the only WR that there QB has to throw to.He's also a beast at FS Best in the area but I guess you all keep on Hating & we will just keep doing what we know how to do best & that's winning DR 6-2 Really with the hardest preseason IN the area doesn't that mean anything Haters LMAO But I guess actions speak louder than words so in two week's we will prove are self once again against Charter Oak so we will end the regular season 8-2 Haters LOL DIAMOND RANCH the best team in the area hands down Snitches!!!!!

Fred I also mentioned standards. Wells broke that part. he is a good student in the classroom.

I was NOT saying NOT to keep the standards HIGH just be realistic the CIF requires a 2.0 . If an athlete maintains THAT I think all is OK .But I agree EDUCATION FIRST !

Anonymous said:

I don't agree...keep the standards high in all schools..education first, sports second..several of the kids on our team are dual sport athletes and maintain a 4.0 or better

FredJ said:

Fact, Wells being at South Hills has nothing to do with his grades. He's a very good student in the classroom.

Anonymous said:

Seems like this CODE is causing some turmoil @ good old Bishop Amat . Might be time to REVIEW the expectations of your student athletes .As a former player , if you have ANY classes that are NOT just run of the mill courses , maybe an AP or two , keeping the 2.0 is tough enough . ADMIN /COACHES SHOULD BE REALISTIC !

Fact said:

Lopez, is a good Football / Baseball player and has remarkable hands and speed not to mention cut back elusive moves, BUT! he is not cutting it in the classroom and is off the football team for the remainder of the season. Rules are rules and he did not live up to his committment of his Varsity contract when it came to grades, so it does not matter who you are or how good you are as a athlete, Amat has standards and lives and dies by them, that is why Wells is at So. Hills. Amat Standards, does not allow a student athlete to bend them, maybe in public this happens but not at Amat.
