Area's top offensive lineman: "The Sweet 16"
In no particular order, these area the area's top offensive lineman. Obviously this is the toughest category to nail down. Stats don't do these guys justice, and they hardly ever get their names mentioned in the newspaper, but they're the heart and soul of any football team. Thanks to the coaches and those of you who emailed in to help put this list together. Inevitably, there will be a few players who are deserving that we left off, but we did the best we could.

Above: Glendora center Austin Sefton getting ready to snap the ball to Drew Kaluzny.
Dominique Austin, Bishop Amat, 6-4, 250, senior -- The area's biggest and baddest stud.
Willie Vess, Covina, 5-11, 230, senior, -- One of the reason's the Colts move so easily on offense.
Nick Longoria, Los Altos, 6-2, 240, senior -- Need to step up more than ever with depleted frontline.
Domanic Blanco, Charter Oak, 6-0, 240, senior -- When pressed, Farrar said he's the one
Robert Diaz, Northview, 6-0, 270, senior -- Vikings don't have a lot of seniors, but he's a special one.
Austin Sefton, Glendora, 5-10, 235, senior, -- Arguably the area's best center.
Ryan Doll, San Dimas, 6-0, 220, junior -- Already a two-year starter who makes life easy for Nico Barbone.
Carl Schmitz, Damien, 6-6, 322, senior -- Incredible size and potential.
Charles Cisneros, Diamond Ranch, 6-3, 275, senior -- Three year starter who thrilled coach at Army All-American combine.
Roland Penaloza, Arroyo, 5-11, 225, senior -- Knights coach Jim Singiser has nothing but praise for the tough guy.
Jarred McGarry, Glendora, 5-11, 290, senior -- Another one of the Tartans' big hogs.
Andrew Oviedo, Rosemead, 6-1, 240, senior -- Koffler always has good offensive lineman and he's one of them.
John Earnest, South Hills, 5-10, 270, senior -- Was second team all league as a junior.
Stephen Ochoa, Bishop Amat, 6-4, 235, senior -- Guys love running behind this big senior.
Rod Arrant, Covina, 5-11, 280, senior -- Another Colt that league coaches had high praise for.
Cory Geer, San Dimas, 6-4, 205, senior -- Saints three-year varsity starter.

Bishop Amat loses to Crespi 55-05.
When do you pull the plug on a head coach?
How much embarrassment can one person take?
Parents spend time & money to watch their kids.
Hopefully succeed & earn atheletic scholarships.
Will this head coach be selfish like the last?
The last head coach quit, due to failure.
He was at Bishop Amat way too long & it shows.
Then Amat hires his asst coach, nothing changes.
No wonder twenty some players transfered out.
The parents & loyal fans are all suffering.
Bishop Amat is known for football.
Football put Amat on the map.
Now the great teams of Amat is a past tense.
Amat can win a million CIF championships.
In girls basketball, baseball & cross country.
But will only be known for its football program.
It is sad to see a program like Amat fail.
They are below average & not even mediocre.
This coach needs to resign.
He's humiliating his family, friends & staff.
His wife has to defend him in the stands.
How sad is that? Emberrassing I must say.
He was never prepared for a program like Amat.
Not enough knowledge, tenacity or personality.
Amat deserves the best & needs to realize it.
There is way too much pride & tradition not too.
Amat deserves all the bad publicity,
the negative write-ups from former players,
and the poor rankings the Tribune gives them.
You pay for what you get.
I would like to say thank you to Msgr. Carroll.
Your the reason St. Paul's program went down
the drain & now your the reason why Bishop Amat
is a losing program. We were better without you.
You have brought nothing, but shame to our
program. You took away the fiesta which kept
tuition down for all students. You put up a gym
with no individual coaching rooms and you think
your somebody. Football payed for that gym and
most of the schools expenses. If anything you
should of built a stadium for Amat's football
team. I can't wait till you retire. That way
things can go back to normal. To the once known
nationally ranked & high profile program it once
was in the past. Yours truely, Lancer Lunatic

Rodriguez no D-I calliber? You are CRAZY! 6'1" 245 fast and aggresive? You obviously have never been a part of a D-I program. Pac-10 as an FB/H-back or take his choice at a WAC/Mwest school (not to mention) he'll likely get a chance to play as a frosh.
I won't compare him to Austin because I haven't had the chance to see him play. Show me a highlight film though and I'll give an unbias opinion. Would be suprised to find better than Rodriguez in this valley right now though.
Posted by: Pro Fball | October 25, 2007 8:08 PM
Conq,
I think you're right...DA would have been a beast at tight end. And Rodriguez being only 6'1 simply limits his appeal to big time schools
And fan in the valley...don't get too carried away because we are defending Austin by putting him in the same sentance (or even paragraph) as Cody. That one isn't even close and not even I have blue and gold goggles that would make me see that!!
The point being made in comparing...is that you really can't. You can't compare Rodriguez tackle stats with Austins unless they play the same competition (or the same level) who really knows what the other might do if they switched schools. Apples and Oranges. If Austin was at Los Altos with the other castoffs ...eeeerrr.... I mean transfers, maybe his stats would be off the charts. We've seen what the change did for McBrides numbers and Tamayos playing time. Maybe if Rodriguez came to amat he would have the same kind of impact as he is now...who knows?
but we'll let the recruiters figure that one out. Take a look at your postseason offers, where they sign...and then maybe I'll concede to that 143-1 record !:?)

RODRIQUEZ WILL NOT PLAY ANYWHERE ON A SATURDAY , unless he plays @ a JC . Sorry just telling the "TRUTH " . He may be an OK player here in the SGV. HE IS GOOD , but comparing most tight ends NATIONALLY !!! He needs to "ROID UP " . I HOPE HE PROVES ME WRONG .

Not attending to be rude but what Amat games were you watching regarding DAustin?
I've been to three Amat games against Orange Lutheran, Carson, & St. Paul and D. Austin's name has been called approx. 5 or 6 times a game for tackles. I think it was 9 or 10 against St. Paul. Did more than hold his own against some big and tough lineman especially against Carson's bruisers. Now, he's not a spectacular player but more of a simple blue collar worker with very good techniques. I personal think if he had better coaching on the field and also in the weight room he could have possibly be mentioned with Howell & Cody. He has tons of potential which could be developed. I think he will develop to be a decent college player. From what I hear from the Amat alums, he's a good kid. No player of the year awards but then again there are some games left?. Don't hate because he's from Amat. Another San Gabriel Valley player who will compete in college.
Posted by: fan in the valley | October 25, 2007 2:28 PM
Joe Amat you might lose this argument. Didn't someone say before the Boise Stae Oklahoma game that ranking Boise St over Oklahoma was a joke? Well Ian Johnson and Co. begged to differ. 9 out of 10 times Okie wins is non sense. NO ONE PLAYS THE SAME TEAM 10 TIMES> It's football and you only get one shot. Ask Michigan..better yet ask Appalachia State...TALK ABOUT LIFETIME BRAGGING RIGHTS...SWEET!!!!
GrEAt athletes need to be recognized. By the way your premise is wrong concerning Harwell and Cody going up against Mater Dei, and Div I athletes game in and game out. All those great athletes they would have competed against SAT ON THE BENCH AND WORKED THEIR WAY INTO THE LINEUP AND PAC 10 ball games.....While on the other hand...Gano's boys started from day one as TRUE FRESHMEN!
Opps Joe you lost this one fair and square. Still Joe your record is impressive...143 wins and 1 lose! Wow I'm impressed.

FYI...CODY WAS NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR...USA TODAY
Posted by: CONQ FAN | October 25, 2007 1:18 PM
Yea im sure they wouldve looked good in blue and gold, haha...but from what ive been told the schools that are heavily interested in Ray are LA Tech, Oregon, Uconn, Utah, Nevada, Boise, and UW, these are the schools that he is taking phone calls from. In my opinon Ray needs to go where his ability will be maximized if he is fortunate enough to get an offer from a big time school, great, but i think his bst bet will be at at WAC or Mountain West where he will be a BIG TIME threat on the offensive side......6'1 247lbs is a lot of man coming at you....Question...does DA see any time at TE? ot is he strictly LINE?....where is he going to be playing at next year?
Posted by: CONQ FAN | October 25, 2007 1:16 PM
Conq,
Can I have both? Clearly they are both great players and Cody or Harwell would have looked great in blue and gold, still ending up at SC or UCLA. Although they may not have been Player of the Year types.Would have had to go up against guys like Leinart, Herschel Dennis, Grootegood, and the like for POY, but amat would have been better too -so who knows. Either way it worked out for sure.
Recruiters know what's up. Who is recruiting Rodriguez?
Posted by: Joe Amat | October 25, 2007 1:06 PM
to JOE AMAT and Ill TAKE RAY...this is a pretty darn good debate and this is a great example as to why FRED should try and poll the coaches and ask them who they would rather take....by the way id take Ray....Joe Amat so youre saying that Sean Cody and Brigham Harwell couldnt of played or impacted the game at AMAT?....kids are pretty much the same everywhere, its the coaching and depth that puts one team over the top, and ive seem amat this year they have no more talent than anyone else in the valley, im pretty sure there are more than a couple of schools that couldve walked away with a 2-5 record. Both great players but Rodriguez seems to have a little more of an impact that Austin..especially on the offensive side...FRED ASK THE COACHES!!!!
Posted by: CONQ FAN | October 25, 2007 10:44 AM
You talk about all of the "great"players that Austin has been surrounded with, well he's *competing* against great players as well. Ray is doing fine at his level and is probably able to be a little more impactful than he might be against Los Osos, Orange Lu, Hart, Crespi, Notre Dame, etc, etc. It's a little easier to have "closing speed" when you're chasing down a Rosemead Panther or make a "wow" hit on a little Wilson Bruin.
I think that backups leaving amat to start at Los Altos and have an impact speaks to that point and proves the difference in competition more than anything that I could say. So it's tough to compare apples to oranges.
Posted by: Joe Amat | October 25, 2007 9:51 AM
See highlight video. Ray has incredible closing speed. He's a monstrous hitter. Plays both ways very well. Is an impact player regardless of competition. And is a difference maker in every game I've seen him play. I've seen D.A. play several times and still I've yet to see him be a difference maker in any game. No sacks, no domination and no wow plays. As far as double and triple teaming him. Do you think LA opponenets don't know Ray's out there? He's the one they can't stop. Nothing against D.A. just trying to understand the hype considering all the great players he's been surrounded by over the past 3 years. Now he's on his own and well let's just say he's got tons of potential. But then again so does Andrew Bynum.

Posted by: I'll take Ray | October 24, 2007 11:18 AM
D.Austin may not be the biggest or baddest or best lineman in the valley but he deserves to be on any newspaper list. Without a doubt, he has earned a spot to play on Saturday next year especially after watching him play against some of the top Div-1 HS schools on a weekly basis, and while playing on a bad knee, and while being double and tripled teamed on just about every play on defense, and constistly playing the entire game on offense & defense. I'm sure all the college coaches are watching his game film instead of watching what's on paper which is probably the BIG reason why he gets attention. Good luck Austin keep working hard. Also, I look forward to seeing your sister play b-ball this year. Sgv folks will never get out of the box!

CO offensive line is improving every week. from game one to present they have had some great games. here are their names: Dom Blanco 55, Akshay Sawhney 75, Matt Chan 50, Jared Dunbar 66, Andrew Loya 22, Anthony Finklea 79, Kevin Butikofer 64, and Steven Hisey 54. Eric Butikofer 63 is out for the season with a broken ankle, he was going to be another big o-lineman but had some bad luck in summer training. all have shown great improvement. keep up the good work guys. and there are only two seniors on the line the rest are juniors so expect to see them again next year as one of the top o-line groups they have had in a long time. everyone underestimated them in the beginning because they thought that last years line was sooooo big and bad but it turns out this o-line has been doing better than last years o-line. it is a solid group and i have heard they are all close friends which makes it an even better advantage. all i gotta say is watch out for these guys in the and of this season and next season should be even better.

SGV kids are the best...and if working for K-Mart or McDonald's was your point of contention...you missed one important fact.....Our SGV kids will receive the education that qualifies them to manage and ultimately own companies like these.
The hard fact is that your off-spring will continue to support these companies on a regular basis...just as we planned.

KEAK DA SNEAK....
You obviously don't care anything about SGV's football players. Despite the shortcomings of some of these players (shortcomings that are primarily physical and not the result of heart)... they give their all in every game. I've watched a number of games involving a number of teams, and these kids work as hard any any kids to get the job done. My only point about this listing is to point out the fact that a number of great offensive lineman from teams like San Dimas and Baldwin Park, were overlooked, despite the fact that they have the physical upside to ultimately become great offensive linemen... unlike some of the youngsters on this list. Blasting the SGV by talking about jobs at fastfoot joints is not just unkind, it's weak minded on your part. By the way, my daughter is a SGV high school student, and I'd put her GPA and test scores against anyone, anywhere, anytime... she's bright just like the majority of SGV's students... TM is right... maybe you should just go away unless you have something positive to say...

Addison Bachman does not need to listen to any of the blogging advise spit out on this site. The only person he needs to listen too is his Coach. Enough said.

Better post. But, your statement "Great job kid. Keep pushing D linemen when they're down", has cost Bachman several personal foul penalities, including a very costly one in the CO game (I beleive).
I like Bachman alot, great young man. He needs to stay lower on his blocks and come off the ball faster. He will polish up his skills at JC and then we will see what happens.

My apologies to Addison Bachman and his family. Bringing attention to #78 is probably not a good thing considering the blog temperment from time to time but ...oh well. Great job kid. Keep pushing D linemen when they're down. I love it! And so do college recruiters. Shows "who's the man" toughness. All the other stuff was just moronic old man b.s. Always an honor to see you play.
Great kid! Late bloomers rule! ...Longer! lol

to how funny:
most of these kids (if not all) won't get looks by colleges PERIOD. they're nothing but a bunch of short oval stiffs. plus even if they had the talent (paradox since talent and sgv don't go together), they probably won't make the grades.
just look at some of the sgv schools like covina or northview or bp. most of the kids you see are future kmart or mcdonalds employees AT BEST.
Posted by: keak da sneak | October 23, 2007 2:43 PM
FB FAN,
CAREFUL, you do more damage to Bachman by posting statements like "Bachman is the best OLINEMEN at Glendora with all due respect to Mike's kid and easily the best linemen that doesn't have a Latin last name." Both these statments ruffle feathers unecessarily.
Bachman is a nice kid and has shown great improvement over last year when he was an up down. But, Fred's choices from Glendora were wise and on target.
Much better not to continue with this as Addison will be hurt by haters on this blog.

FB FAN, I'll bite. What dreamy place is Addison going too? And like you said, Addison is good for a white guy.lol
Posted by: Anonymous | October 23, 2007 1:48 PM
All these guys that are 6-0 or less and 250 plus are effective at the high school level, but in college they're just fat boys. A good O-Lineman these days is 6-3+ and a fit 250+. If you have a guy 5-11 and 290 or 280 (or even 250 for that matter), they can likely get in done in HS, but in college, they won't get a second look - they're just plain short and fat for the O-Line at the next level. The only true O-Line players on this list are Austin and Schmitz... all the others will need to change positions if they want to play on Saturday, or loose some baby fat and lean out. That's just how it is in college. The good news is, most of these guys have the ability to play other positions and changing positions is a posibility. The bad news is, most colleges don't (particularly D1 schools) don't want to take on "project" players. Those guys, if they're good enough, will have to hone their skills at a different position at a JC and then try to transfer into a D1 school. Also, as is the case with so many of these lists, there is no mention of grades. My way of thinking insists that the "best" lineman, "best" running back, "best" quarterback, or "best" waterboy must also have good grades. A physically gifted player who rides the little bus and is a screw-up in class can hardly be called the "best" lineman. I think the colleges would agree with that as well. Fred, nice attempt here, but it's just another popularity contest that really has little to do with talent or potential.

Without Addison Bachman on the list, this list is just like all All Star rosters....going on name recognition. Bachman is the best OLINEMEN at Glendora with all due respect to Mike's kid and easily the best linemen that doesn't have a Latin last name. Longoria, Rodriguez and Contreras should ALL be on the list. Excluding them is somewhat of an omission by injury. But Addison, talk about a late bloomer. Hope this doesn't cause any friction but the truth is the truth and any player will tell you...Addison is going places the others on this list can only dream of.

You're number one selection is right on the money. Austin is indeed a stud and will enjoy playing in college. He's fun to watch and despite a slight lack of mobility, can dominate a game from his lineman position. How about #70 from San Dimas. Don't know the name, but he's a lot bigger and stronger than the two SD players you have listed, and he runs great for a big guy. By the way, I don't think Geer is more than about 190 lbs. No way is he over 200 and no way is he over 6-2.

The county Office of Education sent advisories to superintendents at all the county's 80 school districts asking them to heed the public health director's warning and suspend all physical education and sports programs, said office spokesman Rick de la Torre. He added that the recommendation was not mandatory, but strongly encouraged.
"This is an advisory from the top authority in this regard for public schools in the county, so it is a very strong statement," de la Torre said. The advisory affects an estimated 1.7 million students.
Schools in the West Covina Unified School District have also been instructed to curtail all outdoor activities, said Monica Kelley, executive assistant to the district's superintendent.
It was unclear how long schools and sensitive individuals would have to limit outdoor activity, said Department of Public Health spokeswoman Rachel Tyree.

I'm not sure who was on the line for James Davis but I know it wasnt Josh Contreas. This was josh contreas first year starting full time on the line. Sorry, but truth be told.
Honestly, I believe he would have made the list whether or not he broke his leg this year.

would josh contreas have made this list if he hadn't broke his leg? come on fred his a three year starter helped pave the way for in the beginning of the season for bryce mcbride, ira thomas last year, and james davis the previous year

And the NFL linemean make the OC high-schoolers look like high-schoolers.
I don't think anyone on these boards is trying to make the case that the SGV has the talent the OC has, but that seems immaterial to those who feel compelled to keep bring the OC up.
As you can see in these blogs, there is a lot of interest in SGV football, (I visit the LA Imes blog for HS football and there is narry a peep).
There is no reason for us SGV fans to sit quietly and ignore what we enjoy talking about because there are superior geographic locations that has greater talent.
HS football is a local thang, where communities across the country take pride in their teams. I doubt the fans in Yakima WA or Bethesda Maryland choose not to support their teams and discuss the nuances because the "OC" has great teams.

For having two of the top linemen in the valley, why is Amat loosing. One word, Verti. It is time for the school to part ways and I am surprised on how passive the alumni are on the blog at this point. At the games it is getting ugly in the stands. The admin must see this and do something as soon as the last game is over. I know he is a respected teacher, so make him a teacher only and bring back the pride and tradition that once was Amat football.

these guys are chumps. go to orange county or la city.... you'll see some REAL linemens there.
NONE of these guys would make even 2nd string outside the sgv.

D.Austin as the biggest and the baddest? Can someone please point me to any game where he was the baddest man on the field. 2.5 sacks so far this year and 29 tackles last year. If competition is the measuring stick than I'll be in the stands against Notre Dame and see what the last 3 years is all about. Ray Rodriguez is twice the player and John Rabe has twice the potential. Heck even Sam Lavea is without question a superior defensive talent with far superior mental toughness and engine. Amat gets a pass on this one.

Top lineman in the OC. Makes the SGV list look like JAA players.
Spare me O' OC analmousse.
You guys know I have no problem taking a swipe at some of the misguided mommies and puffed up pops here when they too loudly trumpet the success of their favorite team. I DO NOT though ever want to diminish the effort of a kid playing his heart out for his school.
Comparing players, no matter the position, from our little wedge of So Cal with all of the County of Orange is a little like our Joint Chiefs of Staff comparing our armor to that of Germany or Israel. I mean, good versus good and A LOT. Guys, where is your sense of fair play? Oh yeah, forgot, your the 714, and the 949, and well, part of the 562 too.
Now I don't have a problem when they want to talk apples and apples, you know, our Dl programs vs theirs. We have Amat, they have Tesoro, Mission Viejo, San Clemente, Capo, the rest of the South Coast, the Sunset League, and , well you get the idea.
Here's an idea, why don't you go back to chippin' at each other over the color of Servite's uniform numbers or something else important on the register's blog and leave us to our fun.
Goodbye

What about Chris Halcromb from Diamond ranch, he was second team Mountbaldy leauge as sophmore and honorable mention as a off guard as a junior in the miramonte leauge. He has played against the toughest players in the country for tha past two seasons look at the sheduale! It just goes to show that what some people think is all hype.. You cant hide the Truth!

Jared Mcgarry was first team all league as a junior last year. Concrats to you Jared and Austin. GO TARTANS!!
Posted by: Anonymous | October 22, 2007 9:21 PM
PLAID LAD,
I appreciate and respect your passion for Glendora even though I do not necessary always agree with some of your assessments.
The first round jinx has really haunted the Tartans in the past but I think a first place finish this year guarantees you two wins and a visit in the Semifinals. From there I won't make any predications until I see your bracket.
"Those that understand where Coach P & GHS are going as a team, understand the decisions made within the inner circle of planning."
What is this quote suppose to mean? Will you at least be the one to elaborate because everyone from the "inner circle" continues to insinuate "something" like yourself but will never get specific as to why Glendora refuses to play Charter Oak anymore. Statements like that is why there continues to be perceptions and stereotypes of Glendora and I for one do not think you are as bad as people portray you to be but cannot defend you when you make innuendos like the above quote.
And as far as the Mayor's Trophy, Charter Oak won the game this year so at one of your monthly town hall meetings aren't they suppose to be handed back the Mayor's Trophy in their rightful place until you choose to schedule them again. Fair and square they should have possession of the trophy until you beat them again. Right? What makes you think you should keep the trophy anyways?
I did have to laugh when you assumed right away when I titled "Baja Glendora" that I am actually a Charter Oak fan because yes I did ask the question about Charter Oak but there are kids that live in Baja Glendora that do go to Glendora High School too! Maybe just maybe I am a high school football fan of both schools and just trying to make sense of everyone's rage. Rodney King, "Why can't we all just get along?"
Regardless, looking forward to your next comments and best of luck and continued success the rest of the season!

BP doesnt have anygood lineman?
what about dustin nichols who blocked for aaron harris?
what about anthony witty who returned an interception for a TD?
what about santos guevarra who also blocked for harris?
what about taking second in the lineman competition, 2 years ago, behind Canyon Coutry, Canyon (Divsion 1 state cahmpions), or this past summer taking 1st in the lineman competition?
having one of the top lines in the valley for the past two years, not one is considered one of the top in the valley?

Are you joking after Fridays showing and you still leave off Baldwin Park again! The San Diams kis got dominated against the Braves. Take your pick, #54 Anthony Witty 3 year Varsity starter and dominate on both sides of the ball, # 66 Dustin Nichols 2 year varsity starter, #75 Santis Guevarra 2 year varsity starter, #77 Jorge Garcia, or the sophmore # 68 Raymond Raygoza....oh yeah lets not forget the most dominant end in the league # 99 Oscar Molina.....

Response: Baja Glendora
BG I'm not feeling anything but two Sierra League wins so far. The season is not over with three games left.
As for CIF Champs!...well, as a fan and observer I'd say we have the right components to compete with anyone on any given Friday. With the right roll of the CIF dice I like our chances of competing late in the year. Staying healthy and focused will become a pivotal point in our post season.
Regarding Coach P's decision to "play-on" next year without CO. Hey, it has nothing to do with you or me or anyone else. The contract with CO was over and Coach P will likely schedule another quality game to replace CO for the sake of fulfilling his mission at GHS.
Those that understand where Coach P & GHS are going as a team, understand the decisions made within the inner circle of planning.
I'm sure Big Lou hasn't lost any sleep over the decision, because it also will allow him the opportunity to sharpen his competitive edge against someone else.
As for the Mayor's Trophy...well take good care of it because things may develop down the road to re-ignite the rivalry.
Best of luck during the rest of your season.

amat grads Cesar Rodriguez and his bro Jose Rodriguez both play tackle for the undefeated Kansas Jayhawks and Will Robinson starts at LT for San Diego State. All three were around 6'6"-6'7" but only about 230 in HS,while it probably said more in the program. They all played basketball that, I'm sure helped their footwork. Colleges look at the frame and potential rather than mere girth, although I'm told they all wore sweatshirts and jackets anytime any college visited and they were out of uniform. . Cesar and Will, both seniors are both around 280 now. Troy Auzenne was a lineman for the lancers in the '80s about the same size in HS and eventually played for the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts at around 300lbs.

PLAID LAD,
You're feeling good about yourself these days and rightfully so since you're winning games and should win your league!
Two questions for you:
1. Do you honestly think you can win C.I.F. in your Division?
2. What is you honest opinion of Pasqy choosing not to renew their contract with Charter Oak?

Posted by: covina resident | October 22, 2007 6:50 PM
thats great for the city of covina, covina ,NV and CO added some great guys to that list ,Vess is the only reurning starter from last years o-line and is a pancake machine,NV's guy is a tank and CO's guy like a bulldozer!! the city of covina is proud of our big trench men!

Austin's physical size is indeed impressive on paper and he sure gets alot of looks from D1 college recruiters, but arguably, I have seen more smaller, aggressive, dominant and faster lineman play the OL position better at the HS level. Ochoa is tall but is too skinny, I think he may actually weigh 215 or 220 lbs for his 6'5" frame...way to skinny....better suited for basketball. The Los Altos lineman from the videos looked more bulkier, scrappier and better suited for HS than some 6'5" 300lb monsters.

Message to GHS fans & players
Think the Tribune's top list of O-lineman is important...think again! The only list GHS wants to be on is on top of the Sierra League...as Champs.
So, keep your nose to the grind and stay focused...cuz we still have three very challenging games to complete.

FANatic is on the Blog!
Not to forget Glendora' McGarry was all league last year. He did a great job keeping Damien' Rabe and Chino Hill' Harkey away from QB Kaluzney all night long!
Congratulations McGarry and Sefton! Two of the areas finest o-linemen.
Oh, and Congrats to all the linemen on the list. You guys don't get the accolades, only bumps and bruises to show your efforts!
FANatic has left the Blog!

Posted by: Mikes HS Buddy | October 22, 2007 5:43 PM
first off congrats to the ones that made this list, if you didnt WORK HARDER...now for the bone i have to pik...its really difficult for me to award a guy like Austin for being the BIGGEST and BADDEST...is your that dam big in high school you should be DOMINATING!!!!!! on both sides of the ball! By talking ot other coaches big guys like that dont seem to have that mean streak that seperates them, i mean look at the LA Damien film those big dudes were getting thrwn around by "smaller" guys...seriously though...great job fred....heres an end of the season idea...why dont u ask the coaches who they think are the best...or at least the best that they played against?...that'll be fun to hear
