For those of you who do not remember Doug Rosales , let me fill you in a little . He was a S T U D . Not the biggest guy , but played HUGE ! I remember quite a few runs , but one against El Monte @ Arroyo where he cut back & ran for @ least 60+ yeards .REGGIE BUSH STYLE . And that was just one of the many things Doug did , aside from being the most well mannered kid on the team .This really breaks my heart . How bad things sometimes happen to GREAT PEOPLE . He was a PARENTS/COACHES DREAM . And an Opponents NIGHTMARE .

He was the best ever high school football coach in the United States. He's name...Tom Salter. Tom gave me the tools to be the best high school football coach ever. Yes, I was a bust at UCLA, and at Bishop Amat when I played. And yes, I couldn't catch a pass even if I had baskets taped to my hands, but still! I'm giving these Mexican kids a chance to do something with their lifes, instead of working at the oil change and filter garage in El Monte, off of Baja Street.

appreciate your encouragement to West Co., it sounds like you took the time to go see them for yourself,and came up with a different opinion of them than you had before. There was a big difference between how they played this week & the last couple of weeks. There is good potential on this team, but with all the youth, they have to find a way to stay focused, and keep the chemistry they had this week. Tailback John Ciaurri and the offensive line had a nice breakout game to compliment Isaac Tucker, and the defense seemed to be coming together finally, some of the sophmores are stepping up and are growing with each week of experience they get. Charter Oak is a big challenge this week for these kids, win or loose
it should be a good experience for these kids as they take on another quality program in their tough schedule.

Just wondering. Who in here is a coach, played high school football, or even college or perhaps some pro ball. I was just a little upset when someone said that I "did not know" what I was talking about.
I appreciate all of the comments, but I always like to consider the source. Myself, I played high school and college ball. If that is worth anything. Not at a JC either.
I was at the Rosemead vs. SEMHS game. I was wrong about RHS. They gave SEMHS a scare. South did not play well, but just enough to win. RHS power is their line...after that they are at best an average team.
As far as Arroyo is concerned, well, in a week all of you will know what kind of team they are. They got lucky against EL Monte, and they know it.
Congratulations to everyone in there for being interested in HS in general and for supporting your teams. I hope that all of you see past the uniform and realize that there is a teenager underneath those pads.

Why is everyone hating on Los Altos. Like I said for those of you who follow LA the loss of 2 players didnt stop them from beating Western. Come on lets give the rest of the team some credit. Yeah they might be having some problems but who doesnt when your having to regroup. Remember these 2 boys dont make up the whole team and until now you guys probably never even acknowledged them or knew who they were. It still takes more than 2 to make up a football team.

LA wasn't "evacuated". It was put under lockdown, and all the students were moved to the lower fields. Parents had to (and still are) show ID at the main gate, then walk to the lower fields to pickup their kids.

i believe that while they arent worth to talk about as much as the higher ranked teams, i believe that we should highlight lower tier teams (say, nogales) once in a while... i mean they have struggled the past 10 or so years, but they did have their time in the spotlight

No problem! The way I view these rankings is that it really doesn't matter in the big picture of life.
SD kids have worked their butts off and I know the wins are more important. If we get through league and it’s not going to be that easy like some say, we're off to the playoffs.
I think you would be more interested in RHS going to playoffs than everybody commenting on whose better, who could be who, ECT.
High School is a learning experience and for the kids to have a great time enjoying their youth. Only comes one time is our lives. Our boys have are enjoying some EARLY success as a result of hard work.

Good comments on your rankings. Some just don't want to accept the reasoning, especially with AMAT. There is NO doubt their schedule is tough year in and year out.
The continuing debate about who beats who is just old and stupid. So many variables come into play when you begin to go down that path. I guess we just have to let CIF put teams where they belong and go with what we have.
For God's sake it's HS football not College or the Pros where the big bucks play into rankings.
Speaking of Aram, talked to him a couple nights ago. I'm trying to get him to do some guest spots on the two-minute drill with Reg and I. Nobody broke it down better than Aram, it would be great to have the three of us going back and forth.

A couple of asked about our rankings and wondered if Los Altos is our top team, then why is Reg, Ramirez, and myself picking South Hills to win?
Answer: Based on who Los Altos has played and beat to this point, they deserve to be the top-ranked team in my opinion. They've already taken care of Damien, Western and Rosemead. No team in this area has three bigger wins on their resume. What I look at are quality victories, level of competition, and the what have you done lately factor. I can't speak for the others, but I picked South Hills because I think they're peaking. This was our top team at the beginning of the season for a reason. I like the changes they've made since starting 0-2, and are 3-0 since those changes. But they have to play their way back to the top ranking, and I think they will get there, starting with a win on Friday. Just because we have teams ranked higher than others doesn't mean we don't think those teams ranked lower can't beat the teams ranked above them. If this were the case, I would have Amat ranked even higher, despite being 1-4. Amat's a tough team to rank, if they fall to 1-5 with another loss to St. Paul, I have to seriously consider dropping them out of the top ten. Not because I don't think they would beat several teams on that list, but because you have to reward other teams for having a good season. I still believe, and many of you might disagree, that if any other team in our area played Amat's schedule, they wouldn't be better than 1-4 either. Care to disagree? Amat's losses have been to Los Osos (4-1), Orange Lutheran (5-0), Hart (5-0) and Carson (3-2). Why should I believe than anyone in our area would have beaten those teams after Glendora got whipped by El Dorado and our top-team, Los Altos, got beat by St. Francis. Diamond Ranch's win over Chino Hills was great, but Chino Hills isn't as good as any of the four teams Amat lost to.
San Dimas should be # 2 in rankings. They have the best run defense in the Valley. I am a Bonita fan who watched the Bash Bros. (Bronze and Kyle Withem) dominate in the middle. The line is tough and there "D" will carry them through league.

First you take the won – lost and factor in the percentage of the opponents upper classmen times the JV W/L differential minus the square root of the number of kids on the Frosh team... with me so far..OK, great. Now, if you take the small bus to away games, subtract the number of guys wearing coaches shirts at home games. If you take the BIG bus to away games multiply your base by the number of mascots. OK, we're almost there. Now take the total number of cheerleaders wearing uniforms bigger than size ten and subtract from your subtotal then you (at last) take that final number and divide by your FG/TD # and there you have it.

No hate for SD there. I believe what everyone is saying is that the competition SD has played makes it impossible to say just how good their are. Maybe it's not their fault, but playing against weaker comp. can make a good team look GREAT. We'll see how you do against Covina because Glendora looked HUGE and AWESOME against those guys. Even their coach said it was like playing Citrus College for them. But as you see when they play the bigger boys they are merely a "good" team (at this point).

Go back and look.. It’s not always based upon who beats who. Very stupid to compare smaller schools with bigger schools.

Bishop wouldn’t happen, but everyone thinks Bishop is bad, but not me! They are just re-tooling with players and possibly coaches.

Workman will end up the last team in the valley. i heard that many of their players quit and that they dont like their coaching staff. that the coaching staff cant handle the pressure. if this is true, there will be no way that they will win more games. i guess last year was pure luck.

one thing you know for sure, gano will have his troops ready no matter what. he and bogan are both great high school coaches, and this is always a show of wits and strategy. a chess match among the local kings! shhs's new look offensive will be exciting to watch against the best deffense they have faced. good luck to both sides, especially shhs. this one will be fun to watch for sure. many of these kids grew up w/ each other playing football/baseball. hopefully everyone will come out un-scathed and ready for league

IMO there are a handful of teams in the Valley that can beat Amat: top three Miramonte, top two Sierra, and South Hills. In my book, that makes the Lancers better than the rest. Does anyone really think San Dimas could go toe to toe with Bishop Amat and win? Seriously?

Is that where B A ought to be? H#(( no. Amat is a Pac 5 (Dl) school and as such they ought to field a team who could stomp any DlV or DX team snotless. Should the Lancer faithful be disapointed, unhappy, unruly, looking for changes, loud, etc? No doubt. Coaches fault, Admins fault, whatever; change what you must. The Valley needs your program to be on top as it draws everyone up when it is.
With all the problems you guys are having you could still beat all but a handful of local teams, and that on an average day. I suspect that at the top of your game, you could whip the best local teams as well, strictly on the virtues of your athletes and your depth. Sorry for your problems, but the Amat issues are illuminated by the light of teams from the Trinity and Foothill leagues and now by two pretty good Mission League teams. Do you need a softer schedule? Lesser league? Your choice, but whatever it takes, keep battling to return B A to it's former glory. (That goes for Amat 73, Blue Orca, Joe Amat and all of the rest of yezz too).
Does this change my ratings? Nope. For them to make sense, (to me anyway), I have to have a baseline. Mine is who can beat whom.
Great point Don. I was just ribbing you. But here's my point. These ranking are just a weekly bragging right for kids and parents. (Just one week) As in , "We were once ranked #1!!!) Trust me in 29 years this will mean so much more. For this one week Los Altos deserves their #1 ranking. If they lose and the loses of those great players really is too much to overcome then you drop them accordingly. This happened last year when Bonita was undefeated and earned/deserved a Top 3 ranking. Then, as we all know, they fell apart because of injuries or whatever and fell like a stone both in the rankings and out of the playoffs. So let's place the teams according to past performance and let the future take care of itself. That was my point. Case in point with Bishop Amat. After seeing them against Carson I still think they beat EVERY team in the SGV. YES EVERY TEAM IN THE SGV. But there again 4 loses means they don't deserve to be in the Top Ten. No matter what or who they play because like every other team it comes down to getting it done and not coulda, woulda, shoulda. And Bishop Amat is not getting it done, at least not for 4 quarters. But for the most part Don I really enjoy your takes and commentary. Fair enough?

For the record, I'm nobody important, and as such my opinions counts pretty much the same as anyone else here. The injuries I alluded to were the ones reported here, Contreras and Rodriguez. As two way starters they represent about 20% of the Los Altos starting lineup. In most schools, even Gano's powerhouse, that's a lot.

Same stuff as above; with Contreras and Rodriguez healthy I see L A #1 or #2, without them I think they hurt against the better teams.
One of the critical differences between a good team, (San Dimas is a great example here), and a championship caliber team, (top three or four on the list), is the ability to ferret out the weakness in a solid opponent and exploit it to your advantage. “Good” teams will do what they do well regardless of who they play and what that team's strength or weakness is. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. Great teams will find a way to win by finding the opposition's vulnerable spot and attacking it.
I think the loss of the two two-way studs at Los Altos affects their ability to do that.
Either way, it won't take long to find out. Good luck Friday.
I am in total agreement, we BA, are not very good and yes we do play a hard schedule and stronger teams but the fact is we are not playing well and our record reflects that and our stats reflect that, and we should not be even in the top ten. If we had 3 wins I could see us up there but with one win there is no way for the arguement that we belong. Given that 2 games Oluth and Hart were losses this team should be 3-2 right now but those losses to Los Osos and Carson stick out. imagine going into league if Amat beats Los Osos and Carson and the one win vs Rancho C. then handles their business with St. Paul and Alemeny now the season looks good at 5-2 going into league and we are a top ten nominee and maybe number 1 on that list, but that is all hindsight and we have only one win. We do not belong in the Tribune top ten at all If St. Paul beats us drop us out of there we definitley do not belong. You people are being too generous to our program. This is coming from a true Amat fan no BS. We are what we are and we need to be honest here.
Don Los Altos kicks the crap out out Damien and Damien essentially get beat by a CO team that's taking the second half off getting ready for league and is resting it's starting RB and Damien is ranked higher than Los Altos? Damien is DIV II and those teams are Div VI. Seems to me you got things a little mixed up. Penalizing teams for what might happen is nonsense. What will you do if Damien and Los Altos win or worse if both lose? Don keep to signing "Tiny Bubbles" and drinking Mai Tais.

Some may roll their eyes over the Amat rating but I just don't think any of the second tier teams have what it takes to beat a Pac 5 team. There may also be a howl or two over San Dimas set so low, but I just can't see them winning a game against 1 through 7. They should however be favored to go deep into the Northwest Division (X) playoffs, maybe the finals. Oaks Christian, anyone? I set Los Altos so low due to recent medical developments that will, I believe, hurt their run.
Diamond Bar and Bonita have pretty slim playoff chances in 2007, but they could still beat most of the other teams in the Valley.

How on earth can you rank a 1-4 Bishop Amat team so high? Granted, they are better than their record indicates, but their record is what it is... 1 and 4... Also, Duarte is far too low in your rankings... I think they could give South Hills, Diamond Ranch, and Charter Oak a real run and I'm certain they could beat San Dimas. San Dimas is undefeated, but their league schedule won't allow them to go much higher than you already have them... They have a great running back and it's a shame we can't put them against some better competition. Likewise, SH, DR, and CO have stronger schedules, but they might each loose another game... at some point, the record must matter more than it does on your rankings... At some point ?-0 can't be ignored, nor can 1-?...
