Fire Update: Glendora, Baldwin Park games still on ... For now.
UPDATE: Glendora coach Mark Pasquarella said as of now, Thursday's game at Chino High School is still on, but they will make a final determination on Thursday at Noon. If the game can't be played at Chino because of poor air quality, he said the schools have tentatively agreed to move the game to Downey High School. Also, Baldwin Park coach James Heggins said they're in the same situation. They're scheduled to play Pomona at Ganesha on Thursday. A final decision will be made on Thursday, but no alternate site has been selected at this point. As soon as I have new information, I'll pass it along.

Fire Update: We have not been informed of any Thursday or Friday night football games being canceled because of poor air quality stemming from the fires throughout the Southland. Several High School football teams were forced to cancel practice on Tuesday, and more may continue today. We will keep you posted.
If there are cancellations, leagues have two options on how to handle it because CIF will not extend the season.
The 2003 fires in Corona and Riverside forced the postponement of several league games. As a result, several leagues opted to use the final week of the regular season to play on Monday and Friday to get the games in. Some leagues decided not to reschedule, and played a shortened league season.
"The plan is to let the leagues and the schools decide what's best for them," said CIF-SS spokesperson Thom Simmons. "If they can't play their full compliment of games, that's their decision."
Question: How would you decide it?

Msgr Caroll doesn't give a crap about athletics, the state of our football program is not there by default but it is what it is by design. He wants Amat to be known as an Academic Powerhouse and not an Athletic Powerhouse. He will bring down the house of sports, so it's really not Verti's fault. Verti is just a stooge for his master scheme....Academics first and Athletics last.

Bishop Amat loses to Crespi 55-05.
When do you pull the plug on a head coach?
How much embarrassment can one person take?
Parents spend time & money to watch their kids.
Hopefully succeed & earn atheletic scholarships.
Will this head coach be selfish like the last?
The last head coach quit, due to failure.
He was at Bishop Amat way too long & it shows.
Then Amat hires his asst coach, nothing changes.
No wonder twenty some players transfered out.
The parents & loyal fans are all suffering.
Bishop Amat is known for football.
Football put Amat on the map.
Now the great teams of Amat is a past tense.
Amat can win a million CIF championships.
In girls basketball, baseball & cross country.
But will only be known for its football program.
It is sad to see a program like Amat fail.
They are below average & not even mediocre.
This coach needs to resign.
He's humiliating his family, friends & staff.
His wife has to defend him in the stands.
How sad is that? Emberrassing I must say.
He was never prepared for a program like Amat.
Not enough knowledge, tenacity or personality.
Amat deserves the best & needs to realize it.
There is way too much pride & tradition not too.
Amat deserves all the bad publicity,
the negative write-ups from former players,
and the poor rankings the Tribune gives them.
You pay for what you get.
I would like to say thank you to Msgr. Carroll.
Your the reason St. Paul's program went down
the drain & now your the reason why Bishop Amat
is a losing program. We were better without you.
You have brought nothing, but shame to our
program. You took away the fiesta which kept
tuition down for all students. You put up a gym
with no individual coaching rooms and you think
your somebody. Football payed for that gym and
most of the schools expenses. If anything you
should of built a stadium for Amat's football
team. I can't wait till you retire. That way
things can go back to normal. To the once known
nationally ranked & high profile program it once
was in the past. Yours truely, Lancer Lunatic

FATMAN if you are listening oh such carnage, such carnage they were carting those poor kids off the field at the Baldwin Park/Pomona game it was such a tragedy that these kids had to roll out a combine total of 55 points in such awful conditions. I swaer I saw kids caughing up ashes left and right and the EMT's were so busy a whole squad of abulances had to be called in just to handle all the carnage. Such a tragedy to see these kids sucking in bad air for a whole whopping 3 hours. I swear school offials should be held accountable for such a disaster. Oh well when their all lawyered up with lung problems when these kids are 80 years old and suing the school districts for playing in the smoke and ash they can always say some goof named FATMAN was in their corner. Suck it up get out there and play!

Fred,
I'd be very surprised if GHS/Chino game is moved. I heard as of yesturday things looked good there, so it would take a major change today. In other good news (well, not for Chino I guess) it looks like Horn & Beckwith will be back on Defense for the Tartans tonight. Time to man up guys and take care of business!

What Joe Amat said. I don't think it has been made official yet but it looks like a foregone conclusion. You can check out the OC varsity blog for updates. I do know that the El Do vs. El Mo contest has been postponed.

Reports are that Bill Habermehl, Orange County’s superintendent of schools, met via conference call this morning with the county’s 12 unified district and three high school district superintendents and decided to postpone this weekend’s football games due to poor air quality caused by the fires.

r2d2 - I'm with you (and I support you sticking up for Gano on the other blog-he'd NEVER be that negligent)
I know...it's probably wishful thinking about the fields in OC, but remember 50% of the teams are one the road. It'd be a lot of work, but...
The CIF offices did move a couple of years ago from the location that you mentioned to anothre one in Los Alamitos...but still, as you say "...not DEEP down in oc."
Posted by: Joe Amat | October 24, 2007 6:54 PM
joe amat,
i agree 100 % but im afraid they wont be able to get that many fields on saturday, and people please dont start blaming cif, there offices are located on artesia just east of 605 just south of the 91, not DEEP down in oc.
Posted by: rgd2626 | October 24, 2007 5:57 PM
I'm pretty sure that most games in South OC will have their games cancelled, as the Santiago fire in Irvine has spread to Trabuco Canyon. It has nothing to do with the CIF offices location.
Postponing games for a week is a logistical nightmare, Championship Game venues could be lost, and all the kids heading into winter sports would be pushed back an extra week, burdening all of those teams and coaches.
Monday/Saturday next week appears to be the best option and school cooperation could be the key to getting games in. Moving as many games to available fields in areas with better air quality like North OC, Long Beach, and the South Bay might be a decent way to go.
Posted by: Joe Amat | October 24, 2007 4:19 PM
Here is the interesting part of this whole thing..... CIF is unwilling to make consessions by added a week to the schedule even with the magnitude of the situation. Now there is a bunch of people who are in it for the kids. Let alone a complete lack of respect for those going through the whole thing. Aren't the CIF offices in Los Alamitos or Long Beach (almost but not quite OC)? I am sure all of the OC teams will be getting their games in.... who gives a crap about anyone else.... hmmmmm

What's next? We start cancelling games because it's raining and little johnny just might catch peunomia. Quit treating these kids like a bunch of wussies. Strap it on suck it up spit it out and lets bang heads if not go plays jacks inside next to mommie so she can feed you to.

the districts will not pay the overtime to drivers to work on weekends. refs have scheduled games for saturdays that can't be changed. thats the 2 big problems. my answer is this......
cancel this weeks games. play them on the week of 11/15-16. shorten the playoffs to 3 weeks and only take the 1st and 2nd teams w/ the at large bid being the best 3rd place team... seems to work, huh?
cif has final game sites and dates confirmed. i don't think they can be changed.
i think a monday/friday game is to much for these kids. when will they do homework and testing? they'll be tired and at risk for failure/injury. both in the class and on the field.
Posted by: mrlippy | October 24, 2007 11:51 AM
sometimes, people have to make exceptions to policies. Things like what has been going on recently (eg wildfires) are unexpected and unpredictable, and it would be unfair for schools which are affected by this event.
i would recommend CIF to extend the season. it would only be fair
playing on a monday AND friday would be too tiring, but if it need be, i dunno.

Safety is the first and only concern, I would have voluntarily pulled my kid from practice but didn't have to due to cancellations. If air quaility does not improve by tomorrow, cancel the games.

What about the schools that have Homecoming, or Senior night? How will Saturday games go if Homecoming is the same night/
Posted by: To Smokey | October 24, 2007 10:22 AM
I don't know if playing a Monday, then Friday game is a good Idea? Playing a game on Monday night, then having to go back to full pads again on Tuesday, to prepare for Friday. These kids bodies are going to be shot for the Friday night game. Now if you rest on Tuesday, that menas you only get one day of full pads, and a day of walk throughs, which means a team may be ill prepared for its opponent on Friday. I hope that a Saturday night game is a possibility, that may work out well, but is a Monday- Friday game scheduele really safe either? Just a thought....

Putting the health of kids at risk for a game is ridiculous. Make the right decision coaches.
