« Saturday Morning Quarterback: South Hills, Northview, Glendora make statements | Main | Area's top defensive front players »

Tribskin Pick'em, your predictions and ours

Steve Ramirez and Fred J. Robledo going head-to-head throughout the season.

Records:
Robledo: Last week (11-7); Season (102-41)
Ramirez: Last week (14-4); Season (103-40)

Notes: The world's falling apart. I haven't won the office pool since Labor Day and now Ramirez has passed me in the season total. Time to man-up and drink by bottle of get tough. Steve got me in the big games, going with Bishop Amat over St. Paul and Glendora over Damien, and got lucky with Walnut over Nogales. We both missed South El Monte over Rosemead, Gabrielino over Rosemead, Western Christian over Riverside Christian (upset of the week) and Ayala over Diamond Bar. Well, guess it's time to find my second wind.

Thursday's games
Diamond Ranch vs. Los Altos at Ganesha, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Diamond Ranch); Ramirez (Diamond Ranch)
Northview vs. Ganesha at Covina District Stadium, 7 p.m. - Robledo (Northview); Ramirez (Northview)

Friday's games
Arroyo at Mountain View, 7 p.m.-- Robledo (Arroyo); Ramirez (Arroyo)
Rosemead at El Monte, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (Rosemead); Ramirez (Rosemead)
South El Monte at Gabrielino, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (South El Monte); Ramirez (South El Monte)
Bassett vs. Gladstone at Citrus College, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (Gladstone); Ramirez (Gladstone)
Duarte vs. Workman at La Puente, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (Duarte); Ramirez (Duarte)
La Puente at Sierra Vista, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (Sierra Vista); Ramirez (La Puente)
Wilson at Bonita, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (Bonita); Ramirez (Bonita)
Rowland at Nogales, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (Rowland); Ramirez (Rowland)
South Hills vs. Walnut at Covina District, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (South Hills); Ramirez (South Hills)
Diamond Bar at Chino, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (Chino); Ramirez (Diamond Bar)
Glendora at Chino Hills, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (Glendora); Ramirez (Glendora)
Ayala at Damien, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (Ayala); Ramirez (Ayala)
San Dimas at Baldwin Park (CA), 7 p.m. -- Robledo (San Dimas); Ramirez (San Dimas)
Covina vs. Pomona at Ganesha, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (Covina); Ramirez (Covina)
Bishop Amat at Alemany, 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (Bishop Amat); Ramirez (Bishop Amat)
Azusa at Aquinas, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (Aquinas); Ramirez (Aquinas)
West Covina at Charter Oak, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (Charter Oak); Ramirez (Charter Oak)

Final Thoughts: Hard to go with Los Altos over Diamond Ranch. I don't know if Ray Rodriguez would have changed the outcome in last week's loss to South Hills, but it was obvious the Conquerors missed him. You have to think that DRanch, after shutting out Bonita, will pin a second straight loss on the Conqs. Also wondering if Baldwin Park, whose only two setbacks were close losses to West Covina and El Monte, can hang with San Dimas at home. If not, it will likely set up the Valle Vista league title showdown next week when the Saints take on Northview at the District Field. The Sierra League title will likely be decided this week. Yes, Ayala's a sleeper, but if Glendora can follow its win over Damien with a win at Chino Hills, you have to like their chances of winning the Sierra, or at least earning a tie. Glendora fans may not like this, but I'm going with the Tartans this week. I know I've been more wrong that right with you guys, but I've got that feeling again.

Husky pride s.hills is# 1 admit it tribune sports writters. You know you havent seen a better team in the sgv.....

We need a tougher league ..... these teams suck... w.cov walnut nogalas rowland come on please move us so we can have somekind of competion!!! From s.hills

Fred why would you say BP is weak up front?

Old Fan
Temper Tantrum?
Kind of like your post. Oh and if he did.... Whine, whine, whine. you little girl.

If what the Diamond Ranch assistant coach said is true, that head coach Roddy Layton got ejected on purpose, Layton should be suspended for the season. His temper tantrum, including throwing a water bottle, is a horrible example for his team and other kids in the school. That is not leadership, it is a spoiled brat. The only difference between him and Crutchfield is Layton doesn't use as much profanity.

BOO Janson!!!

Okay... I was a Janson Jaguar .

Go Panthers !!!

TM

Hey Rosemead fans and alum...

Can't we just all get along? (J/K) Did my blog start the infighting??

Hey muscatel, I like the name...haha. I think I'm going to refer to myself as ShueyShark now.

TM,
There are rules to this game. Rule #1: I ask all the questions.
Muscatel

Okay Muscatel . LESSON LEARNED . RHS Alum ?

TM,
I didn't knock anyone, rather I asked a simple question. In addition, I made no mention of Coach Koffler due to the fact that I feel he is an outstanding coach. In regard to dunaway's decision to hire him, they say even a blind squirrel will eventually find a nut. I'll leave you with another question...Isn't your family supposed to love you?

Muscatel

In regard to dunaway's decision to hire him, they say even a blind squirrel will eventually find a nut. I'll leave you with another question...Isn't your family supposed to love you?

Muscatel

MUSCATEL ...YES John Dunaway has friends . And he also has a CIF Championship , on top of having a FAMILY who loves him . Don't come on here & knock a GREAT MAN like JD . WHAT A WASTE OF SPACE !!!

TM

I too am a friend of JD. Just what are you trying to accomplish ? Are you questioning players hearts from your Alma Matter ? Or are you questioning Dunaway who HIRED Matt in 1999. Don't know the current roster @ SEM but I coached @ SEM in 96-97 & KNOW that there talent pool is as good as RHS . In fact ALOT of simalarities to RHS of 80's . Let's support our Panthers ...If you think you can help Matt & his staff , DO IT ! But be positive on this blog in regards to The Panthers , if you are going to woof anyone woof the KNIGHTS . Best of luck to you & The RHS Panthers .

TM

CIF rankings are out and I still don't get what these guys are looking at. As a DII observer I can't see how neither Chino Hills (11) or Glendora (14?) are in the top 10. Murrieta Valley gets stomped (by a good team, but) and drops from 8 to 10 with a 3-3 record? Santiago loses to, yes Norco, but at 4-3 they STAY at #9? Los Osos loses to Etiwanda and drops from 5 to 8...OK, but both CHills and Glendora beat Eti and have the same record as Los Osos (with quality wins). And speaking of Etiwanda, at 3-3 they get NO votes, yet they beat the #8 team and also beat TV & Carter who GOT votes and lost to CH & GL who got votes (& should be 9 & 10 IMO). Their other loss was to Serrano (I think) who is the #1 team in a lower division (talk about a tough schedule, who'd like to play theirs...they still get Upland, Alta Loma & Rancho). They could argue for the top 10 as well. Intersting stuff...OK, maybe not that intersting. I should get a life.

i agree w/ amat fan at October 16, 2007 05:01 PM
having lived down the street from the school yes it is in a bad area but the kids that go there are looked at like top quality students and they are. i have a couple of friends who went there and both of them are very bright. albeite one of them was the valedictorian for last year's class.

so fred any word on game of the week?

Anonymous 10/15/07 at 4:09pm,
Your wrong about West Co. getting most of the yards on MD's 4th string, as Bulldog#31 said most of the yardage was gained early against the first string, Tucker had some nice 10 to 20 yard runs early on, then MD. made some adjustments with their linebackers about mid 2nd qtr.

JFR,
Don't need any excuses when we loose to Mater Dei,
I agree with you that MD would walk over anybody
in the SGV just the way they walked over us this year, Bulldog 31 was right however, about West Co gaining most of their yardage early, we ran well our first 3 series then they made the adjustments, we also had a nice 70 or 80 yd. scoring drive late against their 3rd & 4th string, but most yardage was made vs their first string.

Thanks for pointing out Gilpin's comment, I have deleted it. I don't know why the profanity is getting through, we're supposed to have controls for that. I'll look into it.

Are you bloggers really falling for that "Ronald Gilpin" diatribe?

He baited the hook and you bit, that guy doesnt really exist...

Fred this is another good reason to make all bloggers sign up under one screen name tied to IP Address...

Joe Colt

Ronald Gilpin you're nothing but a racist. Just because Amat is located in La Puente doesn't mean its all Mexicans. Hey, even if it was who cares! Were proud of our school, obviously you're not proud of yours. Plus were getting a good education and getting into schools that you or your kids can only dream of.

dunaway has friends?

TM
give me a break
Dunaway was my coach and is still a friend.

beleive me of course Rosemead is known for heart, I was there in 83, 29 on the total team 21 suited up 9 with playing hurt, dont tell me about heart ..

they should not get rolled by teams like S el monte, ever, with the talent they have.

hey TM you might be right
it might not be the team ,, it might br a coaching issue lOL .

Knight:

I'll give Arroyo its props. You guys had the stability and luxury of a coach (MacKinnon) being there for almost 2-3 decades and it shows with your record.

While Rosemead dealt with a revolving door of coaches in the past few years before Koffler arrived for his 1st and 2nd stints.(Hall probably had the longest tenure in the past 20 years)

Still the 'Meads record agianst current MVL members isn't too shabby:

vs EL MONTE: 35 W's with 11 L's

vs GABBY: 5 W's with 4 L's

vs SOUTH: 8 W's with 6 L's (seven in a row before last weeks tough loss)

vs MT. VIEW: 30 W's with 3 L's

vs ARROYO: 18 W's with 29 L's and 1 tie (only losing record)

Now, when Koffler and his staff took over in 1999 the program wasn't in the greatest of shapes and it showed in his first year record of going 4-6 but since then its been on the steady rise.

2000: 3rd in MVL
2001: MVL CHAMPS(SEMI'S IN CIF)
2002-2003: that fool from Bonita took over Fatly or Hatly whatever his name was and couldnt win league.
2004:(Koffler returns) 2nd in MVL
2005: MVL CHAMPS
2006: MVL CHAMPS (3 way tie)
2007:????

This time I'm hoping he and his staff decide to stay for the long haul 'cause with them there the future looks bright for the 'Mead.

FEAR THE 'MEAD!!!!! WAR PANTHERS!!!!

conq fan, stay off this blog, you are nothing but a QUITTER! LA on the other hand well, they play hard and they don't quit!

ronald gilpin, You are nothing but a RACIST bastard. Beaners! F.U.

So Hills may beat us this friday but they are not going to beat up on us. Walnut will keep it close and be in this game. A two touchdown win by So. Hills and Walnut put up a fight. We will not lay down to this so called high powered So. Hills team, the Stangs are coming to play. Mustang Sally out!

CONQ FAN, THERE'S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING HONEST AND GIVING UP.

JUST LIKE THERE'S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PLAYING THE GAME AND BEING A FAN.

LET THE PLAYERS DECIDE THEIR FATE.

FANS LIKE YOU THAT ARE WILLING TO BET "PINK SLIPS" SHOULD STAY HOME.

GANO TEAMS NEVER GIVE UP. WE PLAY TO HONOR OUR SCHOOL AND OUR FALLEN TEAM MATES.

TO DO OTHERWISE WOULD MAKE US COWARDS AND THAT SIR WE WILL NEVER DO!

baldwin park upset san dimas this friday. baldwin park has not lost to san dimas at home for a very long time. baldwin park 24 - san dimas 14.

i have been an LA fan for as long as i can remember, I can admit when we are down and out, and this is the year we are down and out, started out with the sky the limit, but injuries have trully hurt, and thats just football. I am willing to bet "pink slips" that DR wins this Thurs game, People of LA this just isnt our year, coaches cant adjust and now we really dont have the players, losing 84 hurts big time. Its gonna be a struggle to make CIF.....

to Mike the Clone, talkin mess bout DR YOUR DAYS OF SHAWN CODY AND ALL YOUR OTHER GREATS ARE GONE ITS TIME FOR A REAL TEAM TO TAKE OVER MIRAMONTE. WE BEAT LA LAST YEAR AND ALMOST UPSET CHARTER OAK. PLAYED A TOUGH SCHEDULE. STOP DRINKIN YOUR HATERADE CAUSE WE DON'T HAVE BOYS ON OUR TEAM WE HAVE MEN. AND THESE YOUNG MEN ARE GONNA MAN HANDLE LA

Mr. Gilman, there isn't enough room here for me to tell you what I really think of you and your opinion. Besides, I suspect the bad word blocker in place would prevent my post anyway.

However, you are taking these subjects, and yourself, way too seriously. Don't, no one else does, just ask your wife. While you're at it, you may want to reconsider telling the world about your racism. At the least, it causes you to look painfully ignorant, at worst you appear dangerously deluded, (it's California dude, not Iceland).

Last, ease up a little on the caffeinated drinks, they're what causes that twitch.

CHONK ...ERRRR CHONG !!! Go ask Cheech for another hit , you need to get your head straight . YOU ARE WAY OFF ON SOME OF THESE PICKS !

transplanted rosemead alumni 83. fan

rosemead problem is not there size or skill players , its always been there heart, just should not lose to S el monte,

as far as WC have a new respect for his coaching,, has the balls to schedule MD,

the tean is definate overacchaiing this yr,,
not a whole lot of senoir depth,,

as far as the idiot that says they are not grooming players for varsity, this team has got 7 sophmores either leading and contributing,,

as far as players going to south hills instead WC ,,,,just remember this ,,,there are alot of south hills players that should be playing at WC

(I R) wow what does that stand for,, LOL

opps did i say that shhhhsh

wait till next yr, GO BULLDOGS

Good luck Rosemead..

GANESHA... yes, they have not won a game.. but every year there are kids playing and doing whatever they could. Remember, every game is different. and you know, give GANESHA credit, they are still out there playing the game.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!

Ganesha really has a four year losing streak? They should get moved to the Montview League and move Duarte out of the league. That really would be a league worth watching then! And, maybe, they would break their losing streak eventually. Beat Bassett? Or Sierra Vista?

is ganesha one of the worst programs out there? they havent won a game since 2003!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i believe they have a 45 game losing streak!!!! and there "wins" that have come have all been by forfeit!!! geez!!!!!!can you believe it? 4 years without winning a single game?!!! and im pretty sure its been only a handful of games that they have even came close!!! amazing

4 year losing streak!

I can't believe people still say DR is overrated! They have proved their skills and showed us they can play many times now. LA is a good program but I don't think they have the players to stop DR. Mcbride is really good but he can't win the game on his own, and the example is last week.

Ronald,
The pals at the paper know what's up, and what people want to read. Deal with it!

And I'll match our "horrific" gym with any that you can come up with.

Puppydog31, make sure you look in the mirror while backing up from your statements. I wouldnt want you to dent your pinto. MD would walk on anyone in this valley, so it only sounds stupid when you try to justify your lost. Get over it and see if your boys can beat co

Hey seems my comments drew a little flaq. Im not sayin the Bulldogs are going to run away with the game im just sayin that the Bulldogs are going to give CO all they can handle. And to whoever said West Co. got most of their yards on Mater Dei's 4th string your wrong, West Co. got most of their rushing yards in the first and second quater against their first string.

i love it....robledo and ramirez pick ayala over the great damien high school. it's going to be a long season for damien. so rabe will be playing for college? probaly the same college mendrun, eschardies and hile are playing for? hahahaha

Anyone willing to bet that both of these posts came from a Tillis family member? Hahahaha...that video was embarassing! If those are the highlights, I'd LOVE to see the lowlights!

There is no highlight at los altos you just got rolled over by south hills and now diamond ranch is going to do the same.

Kenny Lofton is 63 years old.
Kenny Lofton is still playing MLB.

Hey Fred, I'm no Los Altos button wearer, but this kid looks pretty good. LA may want to use him more.

Thats right West Co ran for over 200 yrds on Mater Dei's fourth string. They did nothing on the starters. I would like to see West Co have a great program but they don't groom the younger kids for the varsity team. I've been to the freshmen and JV games. They might as well suit up 11 kids because that is all they play. So when they go up to varsity and if a kid gets hurt the next one in line does not have the experiance. Thats not on the kids its on the coaches. West Co has to change the way they run there program so kids will want to go there and play for great coaches. If a good player had a choice of going to south Hills or West Co I'll bet he'll be a husky.

I have no feeling for BA or the coach, but that post sucked anonymous.

T.Morris,
FYI, the person writing the post is below the post not above, it was Bulldog 31 who wrote the post your refering to.
Bulldog 31, I like your enthusiasm, but its best to do your talking on the field, does your coach know your on this board? Good luck on Friday night Charter Oak is a very solid team, the Bulldogs will need a superior team effort by all players to make this a good game. The Bulldogs & Chargers have had great close games for three years in a row, all of them being within 4 points, make this another great game good luck Bulldog.

Hey...this is Mark Verti, head coach at Bishop Amat. What's with all the bad mouthing of me? I'm a great coach. I learned from the very best. He was the best ever high school football coach in the United States. He's name...Tom Salter. Tom gave me the tools to be the best high school football coach ever. Yes, I was a bust at UCLA, and at Bishop Amat when I played. And yes, I couldn't catch a pass even if I had baskets taped to my hands, but still! I'm giving these Mexican kids a chance to do something with their lifes, instead of working at the oil change and filter garage in El Monte, off of Baja Street.

Peace...I'm out!

Mark Verti
Bishop Amat Memorial High School football coach
m_verti@bishopamat.org

i have much respect for the DR program, i love what coach layton has done over there, and i dont think that they are getting enough respect...big things in store at DR

Blog Fan's
I guess nobody gave DR respect after beating Ayala, but people are starting to realize Ayala is back and DR beat them at Ayala and without five starters. DR schedule is the toughest in SGV.
1.Edison
2.Chino Hills
3.Christian EL Cajon (check maxpreps schedule)
4.Oaks Christian
5.Ayala (most improved SGV)
6.LA
7.CO
8.Bonita (should have won 35-0)

Bulldog31,
Easy FIDO, I didn't see to many cupcakes on co's schedule so far but we haven't played WC yet. I have seen video from WC and at times they look scary good and at other times look scary bad.
I also wanted to let you know that simply picking up a phone to schedule a new opponent isn't that simple. Knowing how coach M. played the game I'm sure he had a few choices but went with the powerhouse MD to gain experience for his kids. You should also realize that co's o-line "all first year starters " learned what it's all about by knocking heads with some big time boys (Glendora, Upland and Damien) that was no stroll through the park. The game will be won on the field not on the blog.
I hate to pick on a school with good football history but Wilson will not win a league game, they are way down in number of players and size.

T Morris,
I never said that CO would loose to WC. Thats not going to happen. The Miramonte league is the most superior league in the SGV and CO has a great football program year in and year out.

FRED:

SD/NORTHVIEW GAME IS AT SAN DIMAS

JEREMY..it sounds as though youre still a litte wet behind the ears, can you give me some valid observations of this LA team that would make u think otherwise?....if you saw the game on FRI, without the TE/DE they have NO OTHER OPTION BUT MCBRIDE kinda hard to win 11 versus 1....

What Big Panther Blue is forgeting when he predicts west Covina will beat Charter Oak, is Charter Oaks defense. The offense may sputter at times, but the defense is sound. They haven't even been using their two best defensive backs (Snowden and Harrell) lately. I assume to keep them fresh for the newly charged offense, which has scored 78 points the last two games. Their defense is giving up an average of less than 10 points a game, and they have shut down some very explosive offenses.
In reference to BPB's opinon that Charter Oak is not scheduling tough games, Coach Farrar does look for challenging preseason opponents. Unfortunatly, it has been hard. The quality teams (the Big Boy's) have been asked and many turn Farrar down. One can only assume the reason mite be (or is) because they don't want to take a chance of losing to a smaller school. That would hurt their reputation and standing. Charter Oak and Los Altos have reputations as consistant quality programs and they are feared by other good programs.
Does West Covina have a chance? Sure, these day's anything can happen. The reality is Charter Oak is already very good and continues to improve on both sides of the ball. Charter Oak will win.

Dreamers,
I see a big snow cloud forming over that hick town up against the foothills

AHS. Ayala has been the underdog for over 2 years. How do you know, what is like to be favored? Give it a try. Being favored over Damien is not a big deal. You'll see.

Hey! Would you writers please revise your picks on the Ayala -vs- Damien game. We like it better when we are under dogs. Heck everyone knows Damien is the better program with the better players. Ayala has got to be the under dogs

Here is highlight reel of another LA player.

Did he buy ad space from the SGVNG.

Also I talked to a certain ex Trib prep editor who I hear warned you about the "Bagpipers" (laughing)

Diamond Ranch is WAY overrated and will lose to LA.

DR is good in paddle tennis. But should leave football to the big boys.

big panther blue at October 15, 2007 11:55 AM

you are funny man! you call the co/glendora game a real victory for co? no one else seems to think so. 22 seconds left and a trick play to secure a victory. this game could have gone to who ever had the last possesion. it was that kind of battle.

as much as you hate glendora football, the tartans will clinch league with a victory over chino hills this friday. all chino hills can do is run the ball...this will not work against the tartan d.

Fred im with you on stating that youre not sure as to if having Rodriguez on the line for LA would have changed to outcome, but after watching that video, its a shame that he got hurt cause the kid can obviously play. Offensively he would of helped out a lot just to keep the Def. honest, those little dump passes and slants would of kept the heat off mcbride a little bit and who knows after looking at the tape its looks as though he has the speed to might have broken one. As far as LA goes, ive seen my fair share of ball this season, from Chino hills to Rosemead ive seen em all except for CO (next week)...LA will fall the next 2 weeks and might just go 0-4 in league or it might even come down to yet another COIN FLIP, i just cant see them stealing one from DR or CO....that'll make 3 consecutive losses with wilson and bonita smelling blood, coupled with these injuries GANOS boys look to be just about through.

Where were those pizza places around Gale & Hacienda? I need a slice.

sorry guys,
I said a couple of weeks ago it would snow in glendora before they beat CO and I feel the same way with chino hills. Terry Roche is one of the best coaches around and will have his team ready at HOME and yes it will snow in glendora before they beat the Huskies. And like I said a few weeks ago you guys do have a good basketball program.

For all of those who think the Bulldogs are going to get beat like they've never seen remember nobody in the sgv has guts to challenge a team like mater dei especially CO, but West Co. did. but your thinking to yourself, West Co. was beaten 58-7, yes they were, but the Bulldogs also ran for almost two hundred yards on the Monarchs if they play like that there's no way that CO can stop West Co. unless they out score them. The only thing suspect at West Co. is their defense but if they show up on the field they'll do ok they are also getting a corner back from injury so passing all over the bulldogs maybe a thing of the past..

fred how your gunna regret picking charter oak there not ready for that bulldog running game

Good pick for Glendora, Freddy! Steve has had it right more than wrong!

Ayala over Damien! WOOOOOOOOO. I never would have predicted this in the past. But, I have to agree. Ayala is the dark horse. They have a very tough team this year. I thought Baca was way underrated last year. I see Ayala taking 3rd overall in Sierra League with Damien dropping to 4th.

Heres my Sierra League prediction:

GLENDORA: 5 and 0
CHINO HILLS: 4 and 1
AYALA: 3 and 2
DAMIEN: 2 and 3
CHINO: 1 and 4
DIAMOND BAR: 0 and 4 (Sorry guys)

This does seem to be a rather volatile year for SGV football!
