john, taylor is a new coach and i'm surprized he is coaching varsity. he may of played for the irish back in the 80s and is in good shape, but what kind of coaching experience does he have and what does he know about strength & conditioning for a footbal team? i'll tell you, he has no coaching experience & knows absolutely nothing about a real s & c program because back when he played it was different from what teams are doing today which is all year round weight trainning and access to the weight room whenever needed. out with the old and in with the new. this program needs to be under new management and rebuilt from the ground up. the only coaches that belong there are mccuctheon and spoon. mccutcheon has the means, sources, knowledge and spoon has experience and knowledge. people think spoon was just a pop warner coach. he coached alhambra's varsity for years and freshman at amat for years. great position coach and knows how to motivate players.

Dam'n first time ever visiting this blog and I must say I'm overwhelmed with the fans and parents comments. I read most of the post and you all have similar complaints and concerns. You all have great ideas on how to change things there. I wish you all good luck and get rid of Verti! I read enough and have seen his track record along w/ DiFiori to know he's got to go and is not the man for the job! Fire Verti or resign bro. Do your "Family, Friends and Fans" a favor! The 3 F's you been scored as a coach and quit!

The paper had mentioned if the Lancers were good there would be more talk about Frank Lopez. Yeah right, the guy is ineligible due to grades! When was the last time you heard of one of Amat's star athletes being ineligible cause of rades, "NEVER!" What is going on over there? Everytime I turn around there is something new going wrong at the HS. Amazing the problems going on at Amat. Send your letters and e-mails to Msgr Carroll, the principal and ahletic director Monzo. You can e-mail at Amat's web page bishopamat.org or simply do what all the other fans are doing boycot & don't come to the game! Last week was bad, hopefully no one comes this week!

Speaking of financial losses. I usually spend $25 at an Amat home game. That would entail 2 tickets $10, Food/refreshments $10 and $5 for 50/50 tickets. They didn't get my money last for the same reasons why other loyal fans choose to stay at home. Do the math, if you loose 1000 fans per game that could add up to around $12,000 to $15,000 per game. Not to mention playoff money and souvinier profits. That's alot of dough to ignore.

So my take to Msgr Carroll, is that if you're too ignorant or arrogant or both to continue to IGNORE the pleas of the fans and alumni that help build the program, you might as well be stupid enough to cut the hand that feeds you.

This attitude breeds complacency and mediocracy....isn't that what where the state of Amat football is?

Prep Watcher,
As an Amat parent who has been involved with this program for over twenty years. It really frustrates me watching a power house hit rock bottom. There definetly needs to be change and soon. Before open houses and test dates come up. So students can make their decision on whether or not to attend Amat. With a new head coach like Daylon McCutcheon that can attract many players with his name in itself. Also, he can bring much more experienced coaching to help the program. I agree, you do need a coach that is experienced to take over this program. I also think that the coach that takes over. Needs to be a Mater Dei, Orange Lu & St. Bonoventure type of coach. Coaches that know the catholic or private school system. A coach that has pack5 or D1 experience. There's alot that comes into play. I played college ball and know it is a huge project. It takes tons of knowledge and time is a big factor. Anyways, it was sad seeing the stands empty. Hopefully, that is a huge statement to the faculty. They need to see that the sales on friday night have plunged. They lost thousands of fans and cash last night!

DID ANYONE GO TO THE GAME OF AMAT VS NOTRE DAME?
AMAT DID SCORE 30 POINTS AND I WONT TAKE THAT AWAY FROM THEM BUT THE POINTS WERE SCORED ON A 2ND STRING OFFENSE...IN THE FIRST HALF IT WAS 37 TO 7...28 POINTS WERE SCORED IN THE FIRST QUARTER AND A HALF.OUR DEFENSE WAS SCORED ON AT WILL. AMAT SIMPLY PLAYED A BETTER COACHED, AND STRONGER TEAM. THE OFFENSE HAD NO RHYTHM UNTIL THE SECOND HALF...BUT, IT WAS AGAINST A 2ND STRING DEFENSE. THEY COULD HAVE EASILY RUN UP THE SCORE BUT THEIR COACH DECIDED TO LET THE OTHER PLAYERS ON THE BENCH PLAY. IT WAS A GOOD GAME TO WATCH AS I WATCHED THE STRENGHTS OF DAYNE CRIST(QB FROM NOTRE DAME). THAT KID IS BIG AND STRONG. HE THROWS THE BALL WITH EASE AND HAS GREAT ACCURACY. HE HAS A STRONG ARM. I REALLY THOUGHT THAT THE SCORE WAS GOING TO BE ANOTHER CRESPI LIKE GAME. VERTI REALLY NEEDS TO LEAVE THE PROGRAM IN THE HANDS OF A MORE EXPERIENCED COACH.
DONT YOU ALL AGREE? THIS IS RIDICULOUS. THE STANDS WERE NOT FULL AT ALL. ALOT OF EMPTY AND OPEN SEATING. THE ATTENDANCE WASNT WHAT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. I REMEMBER GOING TO AMAT GAMES WHEN MY FRIENDS PLAYED THEIR AND THE STANDS WERE JAM PACKED. THOSE DAYS ARE LONG GONE. HOW SAD, HOW THE ONCE MIGHTY AND PROUD HAVE FALLEN. Ouch. Amat losses 51-30 and it should of been worse. ND put in there second and third string guys. I went to watch the Amat game tonight. What happened to all the fans? There was no one there. I arrived at 6:50 thinking there was going to be no parking. The parking lot was empty and so was the stands. No tailgating in the parking lot as usual. I could not believe it. I heard it was worse last week. I heard without our band in the stands there may have been about 50 people total there at the game. How sad is that? Another one of Verti's stupid tactics to turn away loyal fans. First, you bring with you the losing tradition and then you tell people that they can't have a good time with family and friends. When is this guy or the school going to wake-up? Don't punish the fans cause you get yelled at for not doing your job succefully. They must of lost about 15 thousand dollars in sales tonight. Back when Amat was a power house Amat brought in over 20 grand a game. Note that Msgr. You all are fools if you think Verti is your guy. He's been there for awhile and brings nothing to the table and shows me nothing. Your all gonna go down wishing you listened to me, but by then your kids will have graduated from Amat a "LOSER"

Go to Amat's website and send the President, the Principal e-mails voicing your opinion and e-mail Verti tell him to resign. I keep doing it and stop going to the games. Protest and don't go. Verti must go and his staff. The only guys belong there is McCutcheon and Spoon.

Guys that backed up our first string players. Could of been studs at the local high schools, but chose to be a part of something bigger and hopefully waited patiently for their opportunity to start and knew that they may not ever get it, but they were what you call loyal! Rogers and Woods now those were some coaches that everyone respected and loved to line up for. I played for them and can remember the look in their eyes come game day. As for Patricio, played for him, hated him, but he turned the program around and everyone everyone killed themselves for him and the program.

As for the freshman QB whos dad is an 82 alumni. If he pulls his son that would be something. If it is the dad that I am thinking of, he like me, would have done anything for the school. That is all we knew and supported.

The admin has driven many of us away and their lack of respect to the people that make up Amat. I will always be an Amat football honk but the school needs a change. The AD has as much backbone as a worm. He can make no decision on his own and I have seen it first hand. If you are going to put someone in that position than give him the authority. Be the AD that you were hired to be not a puppet.

Back to football, it all starts in the weight room and conditioning. Eliminate the new weight room and put it back under the stadium. That was a time when kids worked. The weight room is off limits unless a coach is around, well it is never opened. I have talked with other alumni and if we had that weight room we would have been in there all day long. As for Khole being the strength and conditioning coach, that is a joke. All the young coaches are friends and tied together. The strength and conditioning position should be given to Coach Taylor. That guy was rocked when he played at Amat and he is still in great physical condition, maybe he knows a thing or two about conditioning. Just a thought.

The freshman tailback should be working extensively with Coach Taylor but will Verti allow it, not sure.

I shall start this again. Msgr. Carroll must go!!!!!!!!

I totally agree with you 100% the program is in a "State of Emergency" The only hopes of change is that Verti resigns! I doubt highly Monzo has the guts to fire a coach and I know for a fact that the president of the school thinks everything is fine. Just right now I got a call from a friend and his wife. They have been season ticket holders for the past twenty years. They told me many of their friends and people they usually see friday night in the stands stop coming to games. They asked if I would want their remaining tickets this season because they are so upset with the coaching staff. They also asked, if a new coach does not take over the program next year. If I would take over their season seats till a new staff took over. How sad, everytime I look around someone else is gone or someone is telling me their not coming back. These are good people, fans that have been loyal to the program for many years. Some of them are gettng old now and they can not put up with it any longer. It has been going on for over a decade now and things are not going to get better unless change occurs soon! -Amatster

The Ili guy was a site to see being triple teamed and still making plays, but the hing that stood out in my mind about this player was the fans loved him! The defense would walk of the field in the payoffs after a big stop. Ili would celebrate, the crowd stood up, roared and waved these white towels. Justrab said:

My comment regarding the freshman quarterback has nothing to do whether he plays varsity next year or ever, but rather is a reflection on the state of the "Program" as his dad is an 82 alumnus and I assume has raised him on Amat history, games, the whole shot only to possibly pull him from the program.

There is too much history to have a few bad apples in Amat's management group (so to speak) allow the whole school to run downward. Additionally, non-athletic families came to Amat for its dual athletic/academic program and I am sure there is a revenue (tuition) equation for the school to see the football program ripples through that whole campus. It always has and the schools demise or future success is deeply rooted in a stable program.

Patricio came to Amat in 78/79 and had the program from unranked in the valley to Big Five Conference runner-up in 83. He even had them highly ranked in 81 with the a lot of the SGV All Valley squad being composed of Amat (6 players) . Prior to that Amat had not had but 2 players in 6 or 7 years.

Where is Hemingway in all of this mess? Is this what he came back to Amat? He could have stayed at RSM or the new JSerra.

Great insights from someone who, obviously, has been around a long time and went to school at the time of our last turnaround. You've seen first hand that it can be done with minor changes - Immediately. Patricio came back - turned things around. Salter (not that there was a problem with Parades) - quick championship. Wiard - girl's basketball championships. Kendrena - baseball championships. Lokar - basketball championship in the FIRST year. We should have dome everything possible to lock him, and coaches like that, forever. And talk about classy gear, I remember those basketball players wearing shirts with Amat Basketball - est.1957, that said something on the back like "Rooted in Tradition, Building for the Future, Committed to Excellence Today!!!". Where have those kind of coaches gone? Guaranteed that if the MD coordinator or the old Bonnies coach was hired amat would be headed to the playoffs this season and in a position to continue their success.

I do differ to extent, on the importance of "support" from the AD. Sometimes it is best for the coach to simply have *permission* to run the program as the coach sees fit and to just stay out of the way. That is why Parades as the AD/Football Coach was so successful, so that plan of yours could work. Although Paredes had Martinez and Lokar do much of his work during football season. I do agree that the present AD doesn't seem like he really wants to be the AD and I'm not sure why it is so hard to find somebody. DiFiori never really wanted to do the job and his secretary kind of ran the show, making sure that everything was first rate. But it seems she got tired of that and changed positions.

I'm not certain, either, how much power the AD even has to help, as every decision must be taken to the next level anyway. There was talk that MSGr wanted to bring over the St Paul AD at the same time he brought over the St Paul boys basketball coach. That may have been as big a disaster for the athletic program as it's been for basketball...who knows?

So to me, we all know the saying about what runs downhill. I think it starts at the top and has trickled down. Something must be done.

But think of it this way, if one of YOUR Direct reports at your job did any of these things, who's ultimately responsible?? Yes, YOU!!!

I've said from the Day that Coach Verti was hired, he NEVER had a chance!! Has NEVER had the TRUE/TOTAL SUPPORT of his BOSS --- the AD MANZO!! No excuses for Verti, just stating the truth. Proof is in the pudding and it's just not getting done right now.... But again would you succeed without your boss' support?? NO!!

Take a step back and look at the TOTAL AMAT ATHLETIC PROGRAM ------

Football -- We all know those struggles

Boy's Basketball -- marginal - AGAIN NO SUPPORT FROM THE AD - due to the Head coaches relationship with Coach Wiard (see below)

Girl's Basketball -- Yes, very successfull, but NO INVOLVEMENT FROM THE AD!!! - AD cannot stand Coach Wiard, don't believe me, as any, any Girls BB parent - Hasn't gone to ONE Awards Banquet since he (Manzo) took over as AD -- EVEN WHEN THEN WON A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!!

Wrestling - Yes, a consistent winner, but again NO INVOLVMENT FROM THE AD.

Track/CC - Lodolo is the one keeping those programs afloat....

Softball - Coaches Martin and Golhardt are established coaches who basically coach that team on auto-pilot with no help with the AD's office.

OK, I know you're thinking... BASEBALL

Baseball - Coach Nieto has done a very good job of managing Coach Kendrena's players to a CIF title and taking them up a notch. The AD actually has eliminated the long standing connections with some of the Valley's youth programs that have fed that Amat Baseball program for over 20 years. But YET, he rides his cart with "Selected" parents that happen to donate $$$$ to the program or who run his $nack bar and $ouvenir stand. It's been stated on here in the past... The AD ran for State Office in the short past and that IS EXACTLY WHAT HE IS, a POLITICIAN!!!

My point... do I have a hard on for the AD??? Yes and No, I have seen this man in action over the last 3+ years and he has NO IDEA of what Amat's traditions, philosophies and other things that has made Amat, Amat over the last 20+ years!!

Need an example, simply said..... Amat Nation, wtf is that??? Any of our previous AD's I'm sure would have squashed that one right away. IT WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED!!!!

You Long Time Amat faithful, remember our more classier gear, like.... "Amat Football: We don't Rebuild, We Reload!!" etc.... Remember, the AD is the one who approves what is printed and sold.

Simply said, the very, very 1st change that needs to happen is at the AD Level. Ultimately, this position would be the one accepting initial applications from potential applicants.

The way I look at it is, in order to hire a coach and pay him what we should pay him, he would have to probably take the Head Football position along with either PE Dept Head or more appropriately Athletic Director (or as Manzo has had it changed to Director of Athletics!!) in order to justify a higher salary.

Am I alone in this thinking??? No, you ask ANY COACH in the FB program and they know that he is the root cause of the demise of Amat Athletics... that along with ten's of my fellow Amat Alumni from 80' to 98' whom I've spoken to...

Let's get that process rolling.... Start with the AD and watch how quickly things will turn around....

AMAT PEOPLE THERE ARE ONLY TWO FRESHMAN PLAYERS THIS YEAR THAT COULD PLAY VARSITY RIGHT NOW. THAT IS ANDERSON THE TB/LB AND ACUNA FS/WR. THE PARENTS WOULD HAVE TO RELEASE THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE PROBABLY BOTH UNDER AGE. ITS TOO LATE IN THE SEASON. THEY DON'T HAVE A SHOT AT THE LAST TWO GAMES. WHY RISK FUTURE TALENT? ALL TOGETHER ON THE FRESHMAN SQUAD A TOTAL OF ABOUT SEVEN PLAYERS SHOULD MOVE UP TO VARSITY NEXT YEAR. FIVE OF THEM HAVE A GOOD CHANCE TO START AS SOPHOMORES AND THE OTHER TWO SHOULD GET SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF PLAYING TIME. THATS HOW I EVALUATE IT JUST FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN. "FRESHMAN PARENT"

To Amat Old Timer,
I'm glad we captured your heart and the hearts of many back in the 80's and early 90's. There was nothing like being an underdog and spoiling a someones season. Playing for Coach Rogers was special and Parades had his sh*t together along with a great staff. That year our coaches fought and argued early on that season because we were struggling. I never seen a staff so passionate about winning that they wanted to kill each other. Beating the No. 2 team in the country was spectacular! Carson went undefeated the rest of the season that year to become City Champs. If they would of beat us that year they would have been national champs because we later beat the No. 1 team in the country which was Loyola in the third round of playoffs. That season was a bunch of no namers and that's when the names came off of the back of our jerseys. That year we were a solid group of over achievers, hard nosed, had great team unity and a good work ethic. I met a Carson player over a decade later that was a captain for that team and he's still bitter about that loss and how we cheated them of a national title, haha. I miss those days of signing autographs for little kids after the games over by the locker room. People think I'm bullsh*ting when I tell them that story, lol. I tip my hat off to all you loyal fans and families that came out to watch us back in the day. I still appreciate it till this day! Now I'm a fan and I wish our teams were more like the teams of the 80's and early 90's. I take my twin boys to the games and they asked Dad why are we here? The teams terrible. I look at the poor little guys and I don't know what to say. Both my boys have always dreamed of playing for Amat, but now I think they are having second thoughts. It's very frustrating and painful! If you played for Amat back then or had a son on the team. It wasn't just a football game it was a way of life! I may talk negative sometimes, but its the truth.....it's time for change.....Mighty are the men who wear the Blue and Gold! Go Lancers! -Amatster

Amat,
Count me in on the "Get rid of Verti campaign" I watched that guy while he was the OC for DiFiori and didn't impress me. DiFiori was no good and hiring is counter part doesn't help. DiFiori's a funny guy though saying he's going to resign to spend time w/ family when he went right back to coaching over at La Salle. I'm sure glad he resigned though, but Amat should of hired someone else. Until, we get faculty in there that cares about football things will not change. The AD Monzo hasn't done sh*t. This Msgr self appointed himself president of the school cause him and Arch Bishop Mahoney are b*tt buddies. He just pimp slapped Hemmingway to the side. So he could call all the shots. Other programs in our league and in the pack5 conference play say that their schools revolve around the football program. I'm sure there is more to it besides play calling. I wonder about their strength trainning. There players look like they don't even lift, no definition or density in their muscles. Probably because their spoiled, lol. These guys lift in air conditioned gym, haha. Wow, they need to workout in the elements. It's not like they play in an air conditioned dome! But then again they have a female trainer that babies them too. Giving players days off and sometimes weeks off for minor injuries. Some players sit out practice cause they forgot their inhaler, lmao. Some players out for a week sometimes two weeks for a mild concusion. Don't get a sprained ankle you'll be out for a couple of weeks, lol. Hyper extended knee a month. How many times we played with or had concusions and other minor injuries and played through them or sat out a day or so? Her entire staff missed one of the games to go on strike. I happen to notice that watching on of their lower level games a kid got injured and there was no trainer in site. She neglected her duties cause she felt they shouldn't play that day because of poor air quality. Parents in the stands were complaining about it. So jeopardize the players safety to prove a point, haha amazing! They need to hire a male trainer or someone that wont baby these guys like little mamas boys. I hope things change and get rid of all these slugs. -Amatster

Msgr has no clue when it comes to financing or fundraising. All he knows how to do is lose money and spend money. Hiring a coach, getting athletes and keeping them are an investment like you said. Brings in fans, keeps fans, brings college recruiters and extra money during playoffs. We've lost at least a thousand fans per home game. Alot of loyal fans that just love watching Amat play, left during DiFiori's time and if their were any of those fans left well they are now gone because things are worse. I figure things can't get any worse because we're at the bottom. The only way is up! Hopefully, Verti will do the right thing and resign. Amat will go with him forever like they did DiFiori. I never realized how much I would miss Parades or Salter, lol. If Amat was smart they would fire Verti and go straight to the Tribune with who they hire so kids will enroll or transfer in. If they hire somebody that is well respected as a coach and has proven himsef at the D1 level or an athlete that has played pro ball, hint- hint I'm sure kids would stay & others would come! I'm outta here enough gab for one day! -Amatster

Amat has never won a CIF Championship with their biggest, fastest, strongest team. Amat's best team on paper is Eric Bienemy's senior year 1986. They had Bienemy (Univ. Colorado), Mazio Royster (USC), JR Phillips (Pro baseball player), Troy Auzzene (Cal Berkley), Richard Garrick (Airforce Academy), Eric Gideon (Ucla), Ken & Kevin Szalonek (No. Arizona Univ), Stephon Pace (USC), Derrick Zdarstick (Unlv) and they finshed their season 11-1 a loss in the second round that was haunting Amat for years was soon after known as the second round jinx for them. Your very right about Amat's championship teams being over achievers. Amat's '92 team won CIF Championship with a CIF Player of the Year being a 5' 10" 270 lb. nose gaurd leading the way. Granted the team was surrounded with young talent, well coached, hard nose athletes and a team that was united. They ended up breaking the CIF record for wins in a season 15-0 and this team was average in size. Amat then choked again with one of their most talented teams in 1994. They were ranked #1 in the country by USA Today. Daylon McCutcheon & Kory Minor lead this team, but fell short to Mater Dei in week 14 to finish the season 13-1. Amat's next shot would be '95 I think with Ralph Brown leading the way & that squad was bigtime over achievers because I never really heard of anyone on that team. So, yes Amat has always been a team full of over achievers. Surrounded by some talent, good coaching and hard working kids! -Amatster

It shouldn't even be about someone "kicking in" the extra cash for a salary. Does anyone else notice that attendance is a little down? How about an extra 500 -1000 fans at each of the 5 home games? Or how much extra $$$ will be made for a round or two in the playoffs? How about a dozen extra kids that choose to enroll because we have a decent football team?
For the life of me I can't figure out how that common sense is lost on MSGr? Maybe there are no accounting classes in the seminary!

Amat CPA et al Amat,

I think your concept is great, but as you may know we will need the administration to accept or allow the "fund" to exist and not place it into the general coffer.

I thought I had read the 100K plus HS coaches in the OC are supplemented by alumnus funds, and while, we, at least I, am not living in Newport Harbor it would not take much for former players, supporters whatever to shore up a fund. Perhaps 25 varsity classes times 75 players each class and $100 annually would amount to nearly nearly $190K which would pay for a bigger name and assistants. However, with the SAC debt they may take for some other purposes.

I hate this "Amat Nation" crap as for us older alumnus is was never about being better than the ESGV, but it was simply being part of something special. Did someone really print something like that on a shirt. They should burn them today! We don't need monsters, we simply need to get back to what made Amat special.

We did not have this redundant position of "President" in the 80's and I have no clue as to what management oversight it brings whether it was Carroll or some other lay persons.

I would love to look at the books as the gross receipts from the games have to be substantially down. I recall people who hated Amat came just to see them play and who they played. I doubt that still happens.

Amat CPA said:

If all the alumni can chip in $10 to $100 to pay for a new Head Coach.....I'm in. What is going rate for a top D1 coach $100k maybe $120k a year. Let's see...the school will pick up the first $60k and the alumni can pick up the balance....let's see that would take 600 hard core fans to chip in $100 a piece or 1200 supporters for an average $50 a pop. My accounting firm will handle the payroll services for free.

Let's start a "get rid of Verti campaign" and create a contribution cash fund to help pay for a new head coach. We need a change now not later.

I hope the freshman qb doesn't transfer out. The freshman team is ok they just lack big linemen. The qb your talking about broke something in his hand. The starting qb is just as good, but is probably the fastest player on the team. I thik he should convert to reciever in order to get a D1 scholarship. Plus, this freshman team has a bigtime rb, some wide outs and probably the best safety in the valley #7. With this class some new recruits things should change soon enough. The question is if Amat doesn't make a decision soon and announce it to the public and media will players still come? I know they want to their just waiting to see who's going to take over! -Amatster

Amat old timer,

Great comments, can anyone tell me when that last time Amat had the biggest team and won because of it??? We have always been the under sized but the way Amat handled themselves with poise, execution, dedication, heart and love for the program is what had made Amat a powerhouse.

I remember watching games under DiFore where lack of discipline would cost us dearly time and time again. I remember seeing a running back a couple years ago chest bump his dad in the end zone (security guard) on a touchdown, 15 yards on the kickoff. That is intollerable and stuff like that is what drives the Alumni crazy.

I was hoping Verti would bring back all the traditional reasons that put Amat as an elite team. Yes, there were other Schools in the valley winning at the lower divisions and I take nothing away from them but Amat was rich in tradition and pride. Look at Amat's sidelines, it used to be a who's who of Amats tradition. It is now who know who and jammed packed.

Kids would be driving from all over to play at Amat. In the early 80's Amat had the lock on private school kids from Alhambra, Arcadia, South Pasadena and surroundings. These kids are now going to St. Francis, Damien and other schools.

Verti must step down as soon as possible, name a coach ASAP and follow the suggestions of the panel if one is put together. Start a search now so we can get the message out that the tradition will be back, catch these young freshman parents before they transfer their kids. A new coach can bring stability to the program instantly and that is what is needed

Justrab,

I hope you are not right about the freshman QB. New CIF rules allow for freshman to transfer one time without a change of residence.

I hear that Verti is playing kids because of who their parents are not their strengths. If this freshman is that good move him up for the remainder of the season and see what he can do. Heck, Mater Dei did it three years ago and now he will be one of the highest recruited QB's next year.

Amatster,

I hope we can get things turned around, but I hear that the freshman quarterback may check out (back to Los Osos) very soon. Since his dad is a graduate (great DB) it sounds like the problems, issues, confusion with the program are permeating all levels. We always had guys check out (20 freshman from my class on the football team did not come back in the early 80's), but most were academic, religious or general lack of desire to work in a structured private school environment.

It just sounds like things are getting much worse.

I was not a fan of the Amat program. I remember reading the Saturday sports section headlining Amat's Superstars of it's day....Bienemy, Royster, Fields, Fletcher, McCutcheon, Wagner, Getheral, McCleskey and so on and so forth.....

The Amat team was sort of an SGV all star team that would go against the Long Beach all stars in LB Poly and against the OC all stars in Mater Dei and Servite and of course our biggest rival St. Paul and Loyola. Then there would also be the "big game" against the city champs Carson. As Amat victories grew in numbers against these giant foes, so did our fan base in the SGV. I remembered watching my very first Amat game in the 80's against a very huge and fast Carson team. Amat looked like a JV team compared to Carson, yet they appeared very composed, very professional and disciplined. I was in awe when they beat the much bigger Carson with their flawless execution and god send speed. They won me over and now I've been a fan for life. My two sons graduated from Amat and I also joined the boosters.

Nowadays, reading the Saturday Tribune is just not the same any more without such highly touted HS superstars gracing the morning headlines as it certainly is not the same here in the SGV to see a playoffless Amat team.

Joe Amat said:

As to MSGr discontinuing the Fiesta in lieu of starting his "Extravaganza" it not only created a little financial hit ,b ut also a TREMENDOUS opportunity to build raphor within the community.

People thoughout the SGV would come to the school and little kids would look forward to growing up and being a student(player) there someday. They would see Hoecoming Candidates in their formals stroll the grounds and it was always great when it worked out that there was a home game at the same time. the students working all of the carnival booths always were presented as cheery, polite, and good role models that parents would notice and keeping in mind when choosing a high school for their kids later.

Finally it gave faculty, staff, parents and boosters an opportunity to work together towards a common cause which always fostered the old "Amat Family" mentality that has now decomposed into "Amat Nation".

The bottom line is that ALL of these little things have contributed to the slow erosion that we have seen.

The good news is that it will only take a few minor shifts in thinking to right the ship and turn things around.
(as I type with fingers crossed)

john said:

Glad to see other people seeing what Msgr. Carroll has done for Amat. Yes we have new Gym. Put his name on it and retire him. I can remember the carnivals and the money that they used to make. Big dollars $$$$$$.

As for Verti, Mrs. Wiard was for the hiring or at least that was her front on the issue. If we cannot afford a quality coach than the athletes will not come. It seems that Amat increases the tuition every year. Here is a thought, raise the tuition $5.00 across the board each month and dedicate that money to help and pay for quality coaching. Football is the one sport that you can not neglect, it brings in more money than any other sport and it actually funds many of the sports. It is simple econimics, take care of the bread winner and everyone will prosper. Amat probably sells more season tickets that any team in the Valley along with pre sale tickets this money goes to Amat and is not shared with visiting schools such as the gate money.

The Amat Alumni donate each year and faithfully, the golf tournament regularly brings in approximately $40,000 with the extravaganza bringing in at least that much anually. Why are we not going after the high dollar Alumni such as Haden, McKay, McDonnald, and so on. You see the Amat football game program, the thing is huge. There is not another game program in the valley that can touch it. $$$$$$ There are ways to increase the pay for the coach and we need to find them.

As for the hatred in the La Puente area, whats this mexilancer comment. There is no room for this on the blog.

You would be amazed that Amat still gets great athletes. They have a big time tailback on their freshman squad named J. Anderson a D1 guy for sure. There's about 9 freshman that should go varsity next year. Amat's freshman team is a solid group, but not as much depth as usual. Their still getting their fair amount of talent. The question is will they stay with the program. I hope so and wish for things to change. That way people in the San Gabriel Valley can get a feel for what D1 or Pack5 football is all about. Its a different level and speed! I know why some people still send their kids there. Because of tradition & history. Its the only Pack5 school in the area and the players get looked at regaurdless because scouts are always searching for talent at that level. If you've been around high school ball enough especially at the D1 or Pack5 level then you know the difference. Amat's a great place to play your freshman year. Get use to the speed, transfer out to a local high school, its like slow motion & become a superstar like McBride of Los Altos did till he broke his leg. Anwayz- even though Amat is still losing you would be surprized really how good they are! -Amatster

Good points being made. If the current regime is not changed after the season ends in 2 weeks, why would any parent with a gifted athlete kid (D1 abilities?) play for Verti with his track record? I know my two sons (twins) who are playing JAA ball are two years away from entering HS, and there is no way they'd be playing for Verti. I'd rather have them play for Farrar or Gano or Bogan unless Amat gets their head out of their A$$ and change course.

To whiners,
Obviously you don't know what your talking about. Verti has been at Amat for awhile. When he was offensive co-ordinator for DiFiori they where no good and they have gotten worse pal. DiFiori was a descent defensive co-ordinator and a good coach at Temple City, but that's not pack 5 or division 1 football. DiFiori quit cause he wanted to spend time with his family, lol. That was a bogus excuse because he's coaching over at La Salle with Elar Gallagar. The truth is DiFiori couldn't succeed at this level. Verti was his assistant that took over and things are getting worse. People are spending money on private schools. We have lost players to Damian, Mater Dei, Loyola, St. Paul and even Crespi. They are not going to come to a program that has not been winning, has been losing players. What you should be doing is bringing in the atheletes or showing your face at the local private schools, attending the local churches with players, holding catholic flag playoffs, camps, pop warner & jr all american games. It's not recruiting once they ask you questions. I've worn Amat gear out in public and have had numerous people ask me about how to apply or transfer in. Plus, the people have every right to bash Carroll. He has done nothing for the program. The interview panel gave him three top picks for head coach. None being Verti. He used the excuse we can't afford any of them when really they had already chose Verti. Bottom line, is your getting what you pay for. Sixty grand at Amat for a head coach is chump change when the Mater Dei offensive co-ordinator is making over ninety thousand annualy. Carroll also took away the fiesta which grossed over a hundred grand in one weekend. That helped keep tuition down and he's not cutting any atheletes breaks as they do at other private schools and like Amat did in the past. So before you open your mouth know what your talking about! Mr. know it all, don't know anything. That's why the program is where its at Oh everything will be okay. Ten years later and where we at, we're n the same situation!!!!!

What's up TM? I doubt that's the person who tried sabotaging Amat's program. That person, one of two are both good people and still want to see Amat succeed. This has been an on going problem. It all stems from the top. Starting from the president, to the principal, to the atheletic director. Not one of these officials is doing what's best for the high school. They say it's all about money and they can't afford to hire these coaches. What there not realizing is that its an investment. For about the past 10 years Amat has been steadily going downhill & they have lost about 50% of their fan base which equals dollars. If that official was against hiring Verti than I'm pretty sure they knew what they were talking about. That program needs someone that has proven themself at the division 1 level of high school football. Hopefully, they make the decision before December 1st because that's just before testings and open houses to high schools. Thanks for wanting to see us get back up on our feet. I even have rival teams like Long Beach Poly coaches asking when we're going to rebound. We still have the horses coming and some that are already there. We just need a General to lead the way!!!

Anonymous @ 10:29. It is an interesting debate. CO's record of 2-1-1 against D2 (including a win against about the worst team in ALL D2 in Claremont...and by just 6 points). Is respectable. We are 3-0 against 3 teams equal or better than the 4 CO played, and the rest of their schedule I'd guess we'd likely be undefeated against as well. Let them come play the rest of the Sierra (Diamond Bar, Chino, Ayala & Chino Hills) and then see if they win that league with your 1-0-1 start. Assume Claremont is DB and Ayala is Upland and you are 2-1-1 in league with Chino Hills to go. Good luck with that! You make a good point that you are a "smaller school". About 600 students, or 150 more Jr. & Sr. boys to pull from...half of those not athletes and then how many playing other sports. We know that Football is king at CO, where as the Tartans have top teams in other sports and make it tough to be multi-sport guys. Oh well, we could compare until we're blue in the face, (well, you probably get blue, whereas we get red ;) Bottom line, we're both having a good year and we both should win league which only speaks to the talent and coaching in our area. For us, this would be first title in like 15 years, so forgive us being a bit excited for potentially our best season since the Karno years. As for us scheduling "down" to D6 like someone addressed, I thing El Do is a great challange and should stay on the schedule...and we all know that the staff took care of the other D6 game for next year. Look for an even tougher schedule next season would be my guess. Good luck this week and it feels like basketball season for us with 2 games on the schedule. Ya'll come out to Chino tonight, should be fun.

I can follow the teams in the SGV as well from here as I could from there. The coverage is good. I haven't seen SH play and I know they are good and could give CO a very good game. I know LA was good until the injury bug hit them. I still know that Glendora has beaten CO 2 or 3 times in the last 10-12 years. I haven't seen Rosemead play. But I do know that they are never as good as their record. The last time Rosemead had a truly good team was in about 1985??????

Yes, CO could complete, to an extent, at the D2 level. The problem is that they, size wise, are not a D2 school. CIF, trying to make a level playing field talent wise, toys with with leagues mixing very large schools with no so large schools.

I no longer live in the area and reside in the central valley. Because of the distances involved up here, teams are grouped as best they can by size into a league. But, when it comes to the playoffs, they are then grouped by size. There are a few exceptions, but not many. The league that our team plays in here, the West Yosemite League, last year had teams in D1 D2 and D3 out of 5 levels. The dust is settling with new schools, etc., and all 7 teams in the league will be in D2 next year.

It all goes back to what is a level playing field? CO is a smaller school and should play against smaller schools in league. You still have several hundred more 10-12th grade boys to fill your team with. "Pound for Pound", CO is the better program.

The answer to your question, "who has the better program", is GLENDORA. Because they play D2 schools in league.

Glendora scheduled some of the best of the D6 schools in pre-league. EL DO maybe a D6 school, but they would easily beat everyone on the Tribunes top 10 list. CO is very capable of playing at the D2 level, but plays against other D6 teams in league. No wonder CO does so well in their league.

Enough with the shallow victory against Glendora. Yes, a win is a win. But like the Glendora win last year against CO, nothing can be proved by that kind of victory. In real life terms, both teams are about equal.

Anonymous said:

hmmmmm at 10:08 PM....
You make interesting points. Glendora lost (LOST) to 2 D6 teams. CO Beat 2 D2, lost to a D2 (3500 students and should be D1) and tied another D2 team. CO should be given credit for upping their schedule, not rediculed. Perhaps you should question why your mighty D2 school scheduled D6 schools? Why do all the D2 schools in the area repeatedly schedlue D6 schools. When was the last time one of the are D2 schools did anything in the D2 playoffs? You have a large schools but cannot compete with the schools that are the same size.

Now, I ask you, who really does have the better program?

Nice! Aaahhh, Barbarino, Horshack, and Freddie"Boom-Boom" Washington and...

You speak the truth..and the way MSGr handled her situation was atrocious.

Many were in favor of a different hire - except the bald guy that would have had to open the checkbook and/or allow some autonomy to do what is the best interest of the program.

There hasn't been much talk of this, and I certainly wish the best for Lou at CO and hope they go on a big run in what could be his final year. There is no love loss between this administrator and Coach Farrar over some things that happened in the past. And she has a bundle of "coaching connections".

Could their be a coaching move in CO's future?

Boy, go away for a fun, blogless weekend and look what happens. Everyone has trouble behaving.

I read some comments on my phone, but responding would have rubbed my thumbs raw.

At my age having a good intellectual debate is the mental equivelant to the physical exhileration of a great athletic competition in my younger days. I always look forward to having a discussion with some bloggers about things that we have different views on. It's like playing that really good team or your big rival used to be. Those are the games that are the most challenging - and the most fun. It's was rarely enjoyable to blow-out some lousy team.

Obviously, as I've said about this particular poster in past weeks, comments from this weekend were not worth the kilobytes that they take up on this grey space.

No sense in having a battle of wits with an unarmed man.

To all the Verti bashers, you all suck to think it is all his fault. Our talent base is very thin and to compete with Pac 5 opponents you have to have the talent. True we lost some talent to transfers and other THINGS! but to just pin the blame on the coach is weak, face it Amat fans it is not our year and the process takes time. Bash Carroll why? people do not pay for private school as much as they used to, it is becoming a rare breed for people around the La Puente area to pay for private school. Amat is now a normal program and is playing way out of their league. They came out of gate and looked good for a half but then talent takes over. Crespi is a very good team and so is SO Notre Dame, much of the same to come this friday, it is not Verti's fault entirely, he is doing the best job he can for the cards he has (2's 7's 4's and 9's) to his opponents (Aces, kings, queens and jacks). I show up to the game knowing we are going to lose but I still support our program, funny thing is you people who are calling for his head also show up to the Amat games, so cut the whining you know that we are all in this together for better or worse. Anyone know hoe #44 Derick Perez is doing? he got hurt on the opening kickoff.

Hey Fred,

Are Glendora and Duarte playing tonight? Anyone who looks at this mornings paper will never know (until tomorrow morning). It was nice to read the preview about the La Mirada - Artesia game though, should be a lot of local interest in that one.

Seriously, I'm sure it wasn't your call or you were deservedly off for the weekend, but I thought they'd a least run the game schedule on the back page. Did I miss it?

Agree with "Hmmm"

CO is using the barely win against Glendora as a real medal on their chest. Considering, all their other wins were against, well, poor record schools, I can see why they grasp the Glendora win so tightly. Of course, anyone who saw the game would say CO capitalized on one coverage mistake on a trick play designed to do just that. It was used only once in the game, but set up nearly every possesion. Smart coaching, that's it. This trick play would never work again against Glendora. Yes, Glendora would beat CO 2 out of 3 games.

You say CO has vastly improved. Against who? Since then, Glendora beat Damien (you tied) and beat Chino Hills (you would have no chance against Chino Hills).

You say Calpreps is useless. Then I guess your scientific predictions are more meaningful. No one can honestly predict a game with 100% accuracy, but figures don't cheat......

If given the chance to play EL DO, you will lose BIG time. This El Do team is much better than last year. And, we saw what they did to you last year!

Keep wining in your little pond.

Nice post, you make some valid points. However, while we may not be at E.D.'s level(yet), we at least have a shot at competing with them. Last year we gave them a good game (10-6 at half; 17-6 final). G.H.S. on the other hand, got run off the field. Also, how's that mighty Sierra league? How did it fair against the Miramonte? Oh yea, not so well! The game between our two schools was only an upset in the Tartans eyes, not in ours. You can quote Calpreps all you want, statistics are for... well you know the rest. I truely believe our rivalry is great for both communities. It is too bad your coach can't or won't allow it to continue. Good luck to you, and feel free to come root for us after turkey day.

Yes, GHS lost to 2 D6 schools. El Do's one of the best in So. Cal and you guys are supposed to be 2 or 3 in your division. Besides your upset win over us, how'd you do against OUR division? Hmmm, let's see. Loss to Upland who will battle for a playoff spot out of the Baseline and tied Damien who may not make the dance, and just snuck past Claremont who's the second WORST team in our division. Not too impressive, but those other wins of yours were just HUGE (besides LA it was ??? who??? Wilson?, W. Covina? La Mirada? None of those teams going anywhere and their combined record is BAD. You'd better be beating up on those types. No wonder the unbaised computer (Calpreps) has us ranked quite a bit higher. If you think you've got any shot against El Do this year, think again. I've seen El Do and you sirs are no El Dorado. That said, you've got your nice win against us and you should win league even if you lost to the Ranch because of the paperwork. Good luck this week and keep winning...you keep helping our ranking as well.

Notes on Amat

As a general rule, when I post a message on this blog I try to keep my commens to the things that I observe that happen on the field of play. However, I must say that I am at a loss to understand what the agenda is of a few of these bloggers.

For example, just the other day, one of the posts that came from "Anonymous" had a few harsh words directed towards Amat (no surprise given the state of football being played here these days I suppose). Then someone came out and challenged amonymous to give out his real name and, to his credit he did. In fact, he posted it as Robert Gilpin (aussuming of course that that was indeed the same person).

Now, anonumous is quite a curious person here, in that he will sometimes come out with a very good if not an outstanding post, and then sometimes, with a post that is border line raciest (just look below this post to see what I mean). He then will often follow up a post with a comment taking the opposite position of what he just posted, often in the very next posting !

Now, im not bashing on anyone, just making an observation here. I believe that this forum is a wonderfull thing, in that it allows us to express our feelings towards our individual schools and it gives us high school football fans an avenue to vent our frustrations.

However, there are times when common sense and good taste, sometimes take a beating here. Lancer lunatic, good post, but please try to cut it down a bit eh...

But I also went to the CO vs. Glendora game and i have noticed that CO's offense has got alot better i mean alot better. That offensive line has improved alot. But they also have the backfield power that no other team has, #4, #16, & #5 all three run the ball very well. That quarterback reminds me of J. Russel. Big, has a good arm, and makes good decisions. I also like the WR's for CO not that big in size, but have good hands and run pretty good routes. I think they have 2 more league games left in the season but im not sure. CO also has a GREAT coaching staff, they no the game of football very well. So watch out for CO to do some damage in the rest of the season, and going into the playoffs.

WOW! What a week of H.S. football.
Bishop Amat: You guys need to circle the wagons and prepare for next year. Whatever it takes! Prep football is better when your team is competitive.
Glendora: Two games in 5 days. Your coaching staff will be tested to the limit. Good luck and stay healthy. Ayala is playing like a team with something to prove.
Diamond Ranch: Your done! 0-2 in League and losing all tie-breakers. Your QB is a stud and I feel sorry for the majority of the players. Your head coach is wrong in many ways (cocky in the paper, hot head on the field, negligent as an administrator). Pray for Bonita to beat CO.
South Hills: Nice run boys. We'll see how you do against an improving WC team. Awsome to have your game on Fox. Represent our valley with class and ability.
Charter Oak: Improving every week. Offense is better and better. The defense is probably the best in the SGV.(sorry Tartans). They still need to eliminate the mental errors and cut down on the turnovers. Beware of Bonita, (2-2 last 4 years I believe).
A funny thing happened on the way to CIF this year...

Planning for the short week

This Monday will mark the first time that so many Sierra League teams square off twice in one week.

Figuring Monday's game...we will be left with Tues and Weds practices before hitting the grid-iron against Ayala.

The good news is that Ayala, Chino Hills, and Chino, are in the same situation as GHS.

Looking at Ayala's competition this week against Chino Hills...one of these teams will be either riding a high or low since their game will determine which school trophies the "BONE" for one year.

Either way....they, as well as GHS, will be in need of cornering a win as the race to the top of the hill in the Sierra League tightens.

GHS fans will see first hand what the time-off did or failed to do for our plaid-crew.

Unfortunately, there are no carry-over victories this week....we will have to re-invent that spirit and attitude all over again.

Rest assured Chino has more to prove against us as they fight for a third place finish in league and possible invite to the CIF post.

GHS needs to stay focussed and determined for the sake of capitalizing on the taste of victory this time around.

FYI: Be at Chino HS early because the traffic, parking, and stadium seating, are the pits.

*Bohi Fan, I can not explain the paperwork situation at DRHS, but I can tell you the players are not all transfers. Come look at our local pizza hang outs and you can see the the pop warner teams of the past that has these same kids playing together from when they were 8. This is not a created team. This is a dedicated group of boys and parents who have watched these kids grow up together. These teams compete with the top programs because they beleive in each other. By the way #8 on your team lives in Pomona! Can you show me pictures of him playing in Laverne from when he was little? And if you can't how did that kid show up on campus? And if he did play pop warner in your area are you telling me your coaches didn't influence him? And what address is he using? Obviously not his Pomona address! And if he is, how to do you explain that? Don't point the finger about your lack of game plan this year. (0 points) These kids from DR Football are not recruited and we have the proof. We also have proof on #8. So stop pointing the finger enjoy your one elimination game in the playoff and start planning for Thanksgiving because you will not still be playing by then. As for my little friend who wonders when the last time Bonita went to CIF in football? Who cares we are going this year and last year you got in on a lucky coin flip because you couldn't take care of business on the field the final game. If you want to talk about the past when was D Ranch's last CIF title in football. The guy about transferring I understand your point but it is high SCHOOL not high SPORTS. If you are good enough you will get recognized and most travel teams now are sponsored so even if kids don't have money their parents have to pay little to nothing if they get invited to camps and play on travel teams. Football is really the only sport that colleges even look at high school games, but final decisions are made at camps where it is all elite level kids playing. I got a buddy who plays D 1 basketball and his coach told him he just went to high school games to show he was interested in him, but everything he made his decision to have him on the team was seen at his travel ball games.

For your information only " don't tell anyone" DR turned itself in for this violation, cif had nothing to do with this suspension, DR was just trying to do the right thing. It's a shame that any kid in any sport should have to practice so hard and work so hard to forfeit any games. The ineligible player is from DB born and grew up here. CIF needs to update their rules for the new millennium. They know that its just to hard to keep up with all the transfers that are an every day thing in so cal. But why should kids that work so hard be penalized for "ONE" piece of paper.I dont wish on any school in any sport. As far as kids transferring into any school for any edge I say thats great. I grew up and played sports in the mid 70s when it was impossible to to go to another school for that extra edge.So many good athletes were left behind because their parents didn't have the money to send them to good programs and get the exsposure that might have helped them get to college. So i guess transferring can be a good thing for some kids to get the exposure that they think they need. But until CIF streamlines their process we need to keep sending in that"ONE" piece of paper and calling them to make sure they get it. And i'm not 100% sure but i don't think we have a badminton team !

What is this guy thinking? Comparing the Bishop, Crespi game to the SC, Oregon game is so absurd. What game are you watching? All I have to say is that Bishop's defense is wack and has been a big disappointment. In the first three games alone their opponents scored over 100 points against Bishop's defense and last night scored more than half of that in ne game. The qb maybe talented, but who's to say he doesn't transfer to So. Hills, Los Altos or Charter Oak. Where players are being better coached and earning scholarships! Notes on Amat

Just got through watching the USC game. Man oh man how easy it is to say that this game against Oregon had so many similarities as the game against Crespi.

In both games we saw a team that could not execute when it needed to most. We saw a team that needed to make something happen, and could'nt. Worst of all we saw the quarterback throw big time interceptions that cost each team dearly.

Funny how things ended up so much alike over the weekend eh. Still, there was a few bright spots in our game that made me feel a bit better about the program.

Coach did in fact mix it up quite a bit here. We saw more passing plays and differnet offensive formations that, in my opinion, allowed us to move the ball effectively against Crespi in the first half.

Coach even showed a very unique offensive formation that, I believe he should have used, at least once in a third down situation in the first half. Could have made a difference then just as in the St. Paul game.

I have to say that, most of the time, in almost all the games so far this year, our defense has kept us in the games. They have been forced to step it up because of what happens on the offensive side of the ball, and quite often, they have done a good job of things.

For example, there was a big time interception that could have turned the momentum around for us in the first half. But, we did'nt execute on offense when we needed to and it cost once again.

Now don't misunderstand, it may seem that im bashing the offense here, but, there were some bright spots on that side of the ball Friday night. Did anyone happen to notice how suprised Crespi was after thier first touchdown ? I know that they did'nt expect us to be right at thier door step so quickly after that.

You know, I honestly belive that our quarteback will be a very special player at some point next year. But honestly, he's not there just yet. Please, don't get me wrong, it's not all his fault that we are where we are right now. He is after all, one of eleven men on that field. Still the reality of the situation, is, what it is, and at this point, coach should perhaps look at a change in that position. Far to many batted down balls and costly interceptions. Anyway, what has he got to lose at his point of the game right ?

Why don't you consider changing the way you select your top-ten teams of SGV by evaluating the strength of scheduled added with the amount of victories against those quality team.

Tough competition + Victories = Ranking for SGV

Several of the teams you currently have on your list would be eliminated from your top-ten.

I got some homework for you. Don't give me an "I'm a bonehead" answer when you have actually facts come back. What percentage of D Ranch kids actually live in the district? Every year I go to watch D Ranch has some new junior or sophmore that wasn't anywhere in the program the year before. Strange, maybe they were playing badminton and the football and basketball coaches told them, "hey buddy your 6'6' 250 pounds why are you playing badminton." Or perhaps they are just all studs from different schools. If you can tell me where the four new basketball players that were playing with the team this summer came from I'd really appreciate this. Bonita already got screwed three years ago by a cheating Artesia in basketball I'm glad CIF had the guts to do the right thing this time. Awaiting your answers buddy.

West Covina Bulldogs Walter Thurmond,
Is playing some solid football for the Oregon Ducks, making some big tackles through out the game against USC with 2 or 3 of them for losses behind the line of scrimmage. Suprisingly, this was being done from the cornerback position, he had one TD caught off of him but other than that he was a shut down corner vs the Trojans and contained the outside extremely well.
The tough part was watching the Trojans
lose the game & any hopes of a Bowl Championship berth, but if they're going to lose I'm glad it was to a former WC Bulldog & his team.

rqd, what's the confusion? I've always based Amat on on-field performance, AND taking into consideration their quality of opponents. Also, just because Amat has slipped out of the top ten rankings doesn't mean I don't think they can beat several teams ranked ahead of them. So I think D Ranch is officially eliminated from making CIF. Their best scenario is being tied at 2-2 with Los Altos and Bonita, but both those teams would have the tie breaker over them because they were awarded those games because D Ranch cheated. Lets see if anything comes up with the four basketball transfers they brought in. I can't believe this hasn't happened sooner because they have a lot of paperwork with all the recruits they bring in. They probably have a full time secretary for transfers. Those who say they don't recruit answer me this. How can a PUBLIC school with about 1700 kids consistently put out teams that can compete with all the big schools in football and basketball. Public schools SHOULD be at the mercy of who lives in their area and because of that they can have great teams, but you can have teams that suck. Has anybody ever gone to a D Ranch football or basketball game and said Man D Ranch is gonna get smoked. Didn't think so.

So I think D Ranch is officially eliminated from making CIF. Their best scenario is being tied at 2-2 with Los Altos and Bonita, but both those teams would have the tie breaker over them because they were awarded those games because D Ranch cheated. Oregan's ability to convert on third downs will kill USC's opportunities to compete offensively. USC's D will tire as the game progresses. USC will once again drop in the standings, due to the loss against the green-meanies.

Easy tiger, this is the same West Covina team that got TROUNCED by Charter Oak last week. I was there, I saw that a$$ whoopin'. We've played both CO and SH and they are pretty much neck and neck. Unless the camera lights make WC come alive, you can count on a nice Huskies thrashing next weekend.

There's plenty more then ghetto and thugs, but our thugs come to ball when they put on the TRU-BLU uni's... I went to this game in anticipation of a good game. I was worried about my Saints coming back after a tough loss and thought the Vikings would be tough. SD took it to them, but Northview was just awful last night. The QB is not very good and they have a receiver #4 Farmar who doesn't even try if the ball isn't perfectly thrown to him. As good as the Saints played, that Northview team played bad. Well, here we got a dilema now, we need to root for Northview to beat BP. Go Vikings!!!

55-5. Wow....I'm totally speechless. Another low. How much more do we need take of this? We were 8 wins against Crespi to their 0 wins against us before Verti took over. Now we are 0-2 against Crespi. St. Paul's game against Crespi was not a blow out, but ours was. How do you figure?

The writing on the wall was there for all to see as this blow out was inevitable as it will be the rest of the next two games. Our boys have been humiliated, demoralized and our progbram is in shambles..it took many solid years to built it only to have it literally destroyed overnight by this selfish little boy wannabe coach.

When kids were leaving, I was told..they weren't true Lancers or they didn't deserve to be on the team. Well guess what, keep this crap up and you won't have a team next year.

How much longer can one stand back and support this coach any longer? I have kept silent and supported him, but enough is enough.

How much embarrassment can one person take?

Parents spend time & money to watch their kids.

Hopefully succeed & earn atheletic scholarships.

Will this head coach be selfish like the last?

The last head coach quit, due to failure.

He was at Bishop Amat way too long & it shows.

Then Amat hires his asst coach, nothing changes.

No wonder twenty some players transfered out.

The parents & loyal fans are all suffering.

Bishop Amat is known for football.

Football put Amat on the map.

Now the great teams of Amat is a past tense.

Amat can win a million CIF championships.

In girls basketball, baseball & cross country.

But will only be known for its football program.

It is sad to see a program like Amat fail.

They are below average & not even mediocre.

This coach needs to resign.

He's humiliating his family, friends & staff.

His wife has to defend him in the stands.

How sad is that? Emberrassing I must say.

He was never prepared for a program like Amat.

Not enough knowledge, tenacity or personality.

Amat deserves the best & needs to realize it.

There is way too much pride & tradition not too.

Amat deserves all the bad publicity,

the negative write-ups from former players,

and the poor rankings the Tribune gives them.

You pay for what you get.

I would like to say thank you to Msgr. Carroll.

most of the schools expenses. If anything you

1) How many more injuries is LA going to have this season? Tonight you can add the following to the list: C/DT Leonard Magallon; MLB Richard Maciel; WR/DB Ryan Howing; WR/DB Jorge Perez (he was the kid airlifted out) Not sure how many, if any of these are season ending injuries, but none of them were on the field the entire second half.

2) Charter Oak is the best team we've played all season, with South Hills being a close second. Just my opinion

3) Los Altos REALLY needs to work on tackling. Tonight was the worst diplay of fundamental tackling I've seen in a long time.

4) All credit goes to Charter Oak and their coaches. They manhandled us and responded well to our early spurt.

5) Los Altos is a shell of its early self. I would have loved to see this game with all the Conq's healthy...that would have been fun. Oh what could have been.

#1 Falcon Fan-Hey homie! How's County? When you gettin' out? Did you beat your case? Holla at the homies. We'll party when you get released. Call me if you need a ride. Late!

I went to the LA vs CO game tonight and it was pretty sloppy, lots of turnovers. CO has a nice offense. That sophmore RB is the real deal.

LA had another major injury tonight, I hope the kid is okay. They had to Medivac him out of the stadium.

LA just looks like they don't have enough with all of the injuries, too bad.

The playoffs will be interesting with LA being depleted and DR having their problems.

Mike Hunt said:

CO spotted LA 14 points in the first 3 mins. Then scored 35 unanswered points. If not for a couple of mistakes and again some VERY BAD officiating, CO could have easily put up 60 points. Even with 21 points scored against them, CO's defense is a beast!

WTF happened to Northview?

about Damien's mcmahon.... He is suspended over an accident with a freshman... He was driving his car and the freshman was in the way.. the freshman pulled his foot in and out (fooling around) and mcmahon accidently ran over his foot...He apoligized but that wasnt enough for Damien's deans... that is the reason for tonights suspension

You are a numb-skull. Taking aim at your current youth and banging your chest over the good ol'days being somehow better then...then they are now, was unexcuseable.

We can only hope that you were only talking out your A_S and you really don't have children to corrupt.

For I'm sure if you wanted to have children the LA County would never allow you a permit to reproduce. What a great role model you are...Mr. Du Roc!

FALCON PRIDE: now that was totally uncalled for. with an additude like that, i wouldn't be surprised if you have the need to gasp for air.
GOOD LUCK !!

Falcon Pride said:

I heard that all other games in our league are still on for tonight. Bassett probably just doesn't want to play us.

jeff said:

My son plays with Duarte and he just informed me that their game with Bassett has been canceled for tonight. This is probably just the tip of the iceberg.

DSH4VER said:

Okay Damien. Timne to forget the past and kick the crap out of someone less fortunate than you. Diamond Bar is just in the first year of their rebuilding program, sorry there's the word again, anyway let's stay focused here. When you look across the field don't see purple and gold think Riverside Poly. They've then your little brother for awhile so beat the snot of of them tonight! Mchaan goes for 300 yards tonight all purpose. Simmons registers 14 tackles and Sharererer, reyes and Rabe go for 8 sacks. Tonight it all comes together. Play to your ability and everything will be fine. Then bring the Chino warriors into Sparta for an ambush. 3-2 gets DHS into the playoffs and a first round game against Norco. Sounds like the 300 all over against! Shock the world!!!!

Chingon? Pendejo sounds more like it.

FATMAN if you are listening oh such carnage, such carnage they were carting those poor kids off the field at the Baldwin Park/Pomona game it was such a tragedy that these kids had to roll out a combine total of 55 points in such awful conditions. I swaer I saw kids caughing up ashes left and right and the EMT's were so busy a whole squad of abulances had to be called in just to handle all the carnage. Such a tragedy to see these kids sucking in bad air for a whole whopping 3 hours. I swear school offials should be held accountable for such a disaster. Oh well when their all lawyered up with lung problems when these kids are 80 years old and suing the school districts for playing in the smoke and ash they can always say so goof named FATMAN was in their corner. Suck it up get out there and play!

Chingon said:

Congrats to La Puente. It sounds like they are coming toghether as a team. Now theres a team that can give us a good game in this league. I hope they are not sore losers because next week they will have a loss to the Falcons.

Go Falcons...

THEHenry said:

sounds like a great guy
we need more people like him then =D

LPAlum said:

We've needed someone like Coach Hernandez at La Puente for a very long time. I've felt like our teams have always worked hard but it would never show on the field. Finally, we have someone that is helping us put it all together. I agree with Trojan Man: He's a great guy, knows football, and congratulations. Good Luck tonight Warriors!!!

THEHenry said:

maybe nogales should get people in that pool then
since silvette took over, theyve struggled...
*sigh*

other coaches went on to success (eg randall @ jw north)

oh wells...

TROJAN MAN said:

Since they hired another former Panther to be HEAD COACH . From what I hear I think he was ALSO a UCLA guy too , but I won't hold that AGAINST HIM .
Ray is a GREAT GUY , KNOWS FOOTBALL ! His former teammates & players alike will all tell you the same . CONGRATS RAY & LA PUENTE . I wish you all continued sucess...

FIGHT ON

TM
