Go suck an egg Warrior and good luck in your Junior All American Bush Pee Wee league.

What happened to Lp not playing anyone and being lucky this season? Where are all you anti-Lp fans that said we were going to get our asses handed to us by Duarte? It's quiet now because we're the #1 team in Lp and better than ur Bishop Amat Lancers, haha! We Rocked Du Roc take note everybody we da best in da world!

Amatster

GOOD LUCK TO YOU ! I knew Mark T & grew up in Rosemead iwth him , he was a GOOD GUY ! We needed him @ RHS

john, taylor is a new coach and i'm surprized he is coaching varsity. he may of played for the irish back in the 80s and is in good shape, but what kind of coaching experience does he have and what does he know about strength & conditioning for a footbal team? i'll tell you, he has no coaching experience & knows absolutely nothing about a real s & c program because back when he played it was different from what teams are doing today which is all year round weight trainning and access to the weight room whenever needed. out with the old and in with the new. this program needs to be under new management and rebuilt from the ground up. the only coaches that belong there are mccuctheon and spoon. mccutcheon has the means, sources, knowledge and spoon has experience and knowledge. people think spoon was just a pop warner coach. he coached alhambra's varsity for years and freshman at amat for years. great position coach and knows how to motivate players.

Dam'n first time ever visiting this blog and I must say I'm overwhelmed with the fans and parents comments. I read most of the post and you all have similar complaints and concerns. You all have great ideas on how to change things there. I wish you all good luck and get rid of Verti! I read enough and have seen his track record along w/ DiFiori to know he's got to go and is not the man for the job! Fire Verti or resign bro. Do your "Family, Friends and Fans" a favor! The 3 F's you been scored as a coach and quit!

The paper had mentioned if the Lancers were good there would be more talk about Frank Lopez. Yeah right, the guy is ineligible due to grades! When was the last time you heard of one of Amat's star athletes being ineligible cause of rades, "NEVER!" What is going on over there? Everytime I turn around there is something new going wrong at the HS. Amazing the problems going on at Amat. Send your letters and e-mails to Msgr Carroll, the principal and ahletic director Monzo. You can e-mail at Amat's web page bishopamat.org or simply do what all the other fans are doing boycot & don't come to the game! Last week was bad, hopefully no one comes this week!

Oops....I meant Mediocrity....my misspelling rhymed so well with Complacency though.

Speaking of financial losses. I usually spend $25 at an Amat home game. That would entail 2 tickets $10, Food/refreshments $10 and $5 for 50/50 tickets. They didn't get my money last for the same reasons why other loyal fans choose to stay at home. Do the math, if you loose 1000 fans per game that could add up to around $12,000 to $15,000 per game. Not to mention playoff money and souvinier profits. That's alot of dough to ignore.

So my take to Msgr Carroll, is that if you're too ignorant or arrogant or both to continue to IGNORE the pleas of the fans and alumni that help build the program, you might as well be stupid enough to cut the hand that feeds you.

This attitude breeds complacency and mediocracy....isn't that what where the state of Amat football is?

Prep Watcher,
As an Amat parent who has been involved with this program for over twenty years. It really frustrates me watching a power house hit rock bottom. There definetly needs to be change and soon. Before open houses and test dates come up. So students can make their decision on whether or not to attend Amat. With a new head coach like Daylon McCutcheon that can attract many players with his name in itself. Also, he can bring much more experienced coaching to help the program. I agree, you do need a coach that is experienced to take over this program. I also think that the coach that takes over. Needs to be a Mater Dei, Orange Lu & St. Bonoventure type of coach. Coaches that know the catholic or private school system. A coach that has pack5 or D1 experience. There's alot that comes into play. I played college ball and know it is a huge project. It takes tons of knowledge and time is a big factor. Anyways, it was sad seeing the stands empty. Hopefully, that is a huge statement to the faculty. They need to see that the sales on friday night have plunged. They lost thousands of fans and cash last night!

DID ANYONE GO TO THE GAME OF AMAT VS NOTRE DAME?
AMAT DID SCORE 30 POINTS AND I WONT TAKE THAT AWAY FROM THEM BUT THE POINTS WERE SCORED ON A 2ND STRING OFFENSE...IN THE FIRST HALF IT WAS 37 TO 7...28 POINTS WERE SCORED IN THE FIRST QUARTER AND A HALF.OUR DEFENSE WAS SCORED ON AT WILL. AMAT SIMPLY PLAYED A BETTER COACHED, AND STRONGER TEAM. THE OFFENSE HAD NO RHYTHM UNTIL THE SECOND HALF...BUT, IT WAS AGAINST A 2ND STRING DEFENSE. THEY COULD HAVE EASILY RUN UP THE SCORE BUT THEIR COACH DECIDED TO LET THE OTHER PLAYERS ON THE BENCH PLAY. IT WAS A GOOD GAME TO WATCH AS I WATCHED THE STRENGHTS OF DAYNE CRIST(QB FROM NOTRE DAME). THAT KID IS BIG AND STRONG. HE THROWS THE BALL WITH EASE AND HAS GREAT ACCURACY. HE HAS A STRONG ARM. I REALLY THOUGHT THAT THE SCORE WAS GOING TO BE ANOTHER CRESPI LIKE GAME. VERTI REALLY NEEDS TO LEAVE THE PROGRAM IN THE HANDS OF A MORE EXPERIENCED COACH.
DONT YOU ALL AGREE? THIS IS RIDICULOUS. THE STANDS WERE NOT FULL AT ALL. ALOT OF EMPTY AND OPEN SEATING. THE ATTENDANCE WASNT WHAT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. I REMEMBER GOING TO AMAT GAMES WHEN MY FRIENDS PLAYED THEIR AND THE STANDS WERE JAM PACKED. THOSE DAYS ARE LONG GONE. HOW SAD, HOW THE ONCE MIGHTY AND PROUD HAVE FALLEN. AMAT CAN TURN THINGS AROUND IF THEY JUST HAD THE RIGHT LEADERSHIP......JOE AMAT,AMAT 83...WHATS YOUR TAKE ON THIS?

dam'n 51 to 30. what a shame. bow your heads down and pray. for amat football is done. a thing of the past. verti is going to be the coach known for losing and eventually quiting like his mentor and counter part difiori. think about it.

I forgot to say thanks to AMAT OT. It means alot! -Amatster

Ouch. Amat losses 51-30 and it should of been worse. ND put in there second and third string guys. I went to watch the Amat game tonight. What happened to all the fans? There was no one there. I arrived at 6:50 thinking there was going to be no parking. The parking lot was empty and so was the stands. No tailgating in the parking lot as usual. I could not believe it. I heard it was worse last week. I heard without our band in the stands there may have been about 50 people total there at the game. How sad is that? Another one of Verti's stupid tactics to turn away loyal fans. First, you bring with you the losing tradition and then you tell people that they can't have a good time with family and friends. When is this guy or the school going to wake-up? Don't punish the fans cause you get yelled at for not doing your job succefully. They must of lost about 15 thousand dollars in sales tonight. Back when Amat was a power house Amat brought in over 20 grand a game. Note that Msgr. You all are fools if you think Verti is your guy. He's been there for awhile and brings nothing to the table and shows me nothing. Your all gonna go down wishing you listened to me, but by then your kids will have graduated from Amat a "LOSER"

Go to Amat's website and send the President, the Principal e-mails voicing your opinion and e-mail Verti tell him to resign. I keep doing it and stop going to the games. Protest and don't go. Verti must go and his staff. The only guys belong there is McCutcheon and Spoon.

Put it this way I've been up north on vacation. Sorry, things didn't turn out as planned. Still a die hard Amat guy. Amat put high school football in california on the map. There was Amat football then there was the rest! Literally wishing they were us or a part of us. Guys practiced hard and gave a good scout team look. Without them we were not a team. Guys that backed up our first string players. Could of been studs at the local high schools, but chose to be a part of something bigger and hopefully waited patiently for their opportunity to start and knew that they may not ever get it, but they were what you call loyal! Hopefully things turn around for you guys I'm outta here. Too many people hatin' and asking questions that are personal...good luck! -Amatster #9

Yes I know M. Tullius crazy white boy. Great offensive lineman. He played at Sac too and scholi'd to Brown Univ. Pro boxer and MMA fighter. Do I know my stuff or what! -Amatster

Will the person posing as Jeremy Smith please stop. He is in a facility right now for choices he made.

Rogers and Woods now those were some coaches that everyone respected and loved to line up for. I played for them and can remember the look in their eyes come game day. As for Patricio, played for him, hated him, but he turned the program around and everyone everyone killed themselves for him and the program.

As for the freshman QB whos dad is an 82 alumni. If he pulls his son that would be something. If it is the dad that I am thinking of, he like me, would have done anything for the school. That is all we knew and supported.

The admin has driven many of us away and their lack of respect to the people that make up Amat. I will always be an Amat football honk but the school needs a change. The AD has as much backbone as a worm. He can make no decision on his own and I have seen it first hand. If you are going to put someone in that position than give him the authority. Be the AD that you were hired to be not a puppet.

Back to football, it all starts in the weight room and conditioning. Eliminate the new weight room and put it back under the stadium. That was a time when kids worked. The weight room is off limits unless a coach is around, well it is never opened. I have talked with other alumni and if we had that weight room we would have been in there all day long. As for Khole being the strength and conditioning coach, that is a joke. All the young coaches are friends and tied together. The strength and conditioning position should be given to Coach Taylor. That guy was rocked when he played at Amat and he is still in great physical condition, maybe he knows a thing or two about conditioning. Just a thought.

The freshman tailback should be working extensively with Coach Taylor but will Verti allow it, not sure.

I shall start this again. Msgr. Carroll must go!!!!!!!!

If Amatster is Jeremy Smith, my hat off to him. Great receiver. Saw you in that big game against Fountain Valley....big effort.

I think there were some receiving and completion records broken in that game, although we came out on the short end of the stick. Brian Harmon to Smith connection, what a hell of game though!

No one to this day got one over you.

AMAT OT

I heard that Smith was thrown in jail. Is that true?

J. SMith/AMATSTER

DID you know M . Tullius? He graduated in 90' too .J Carrillo ..???

FIGHT ON

TM

Amatster,

Like dude oh my gosh grow up. Your so Al Bundy bro. I was "All World" back in high school. You weren't better than me. I have a name it was "Big Time" everyone called me "Big Time" you know like "Prime Time" everyone that is a Amat fan knows of "Bigtime" come on I scored 6 td's in one game and had over 300 yards that day. I'm somebody bro I play pro ball in the "NIFL" you know the "National Indoor Football League" were we make a huge amount of cash my signing bonus was $500 bucks and I made $6800. bucks last year and our bonus was free food at the local restaurants and a keg in the bus for players that do drink. Big bucks buddy for the year. Alright Al Bundy...

Amat fans and parents,
Voice your frustration tonight by boo'ing. Its a free country & look at the Laker fans they boo'd Kobe. It wasn't right, but who cares. Enough is enough! So, lets do the same and make it known that we wont tolerate it anymore! Lets give them 4 touchdown spread. After ND scores their 5th touchdown start boooooo'ing that TD and every othe TD after that. So loud, that they can here you back in Sherman Oaks! If you don't wanna boo then simply don't show up to the game (go on strike) or walk out in the middle of the game & join the tailgate parties outside!

True Amat,
We are going to go 2-8 this season. So it would be appropriate to call you a True Loser! Lmao. -Amatster

To all the Amat faithfuls,
Please send the President, the Principal and the AD letters or e-mails voicing your concerns about the program, getting rid of Verti and hiring someone qualified for the job. Hopefully Verti steps down and I'll tip my hat to him, good man. The ony two that should stay at the varsity level should be McCutcheon and Spoon. The rest should go bye, bye with the True Amat guy. There all part of that t*tty bumping crew! -Amatster

True Amat,
What is your name? You must be CIF Player of the Year! This is Jeremy Smith "Class of '90" my stats, records and awards speak for itself. Thanks for the Al Bundy complement! Polk High 5 touchdowns in one game, but the real Al Bundy actually tried out for the Pittsburgh Steelers before he went into his acting career! -Amatster

Amat Old School,
Waking up early saturday morning after hearing several horns honking at me to wake-up! I wake up and I'm at the west entrance to the parking lot at Amat. My vehicle is full with three other players on the team, haha. I was still tanked from celebrating our victory friday night, I must of went straight to school and slept in my vehicle. I guess we were was afraid of being late for films, haha. All the other players had brought donuts, drinks and their was a line of cars. We would all be reading the paper, talking trash to whoever got their picture in the paper and laughing having a good ol' time like we were at a tailgate party. Then coach would pull up, unlock the gate and the party was over. It was back to business! Coach Parardes, Rogers, Haggs, Davoren, Spohn, Martinez, Avalos, Salter, Sparky, Stan the equipment Man days, but I heard stories of Woods, Markem and Patricio! "The Glory Days" -Amatster

Amatster,

Driving drunk as an underage teenager? No one wants to hear about you glory days especially when you don't leave a name, Al Bundy.

Golden Jug Liqour,
If I get tanked at one of the home games. I would end up getting 86'd from Kweefer Stadium forever or I'll never make it in the game... haha Kweefer Stadium sounds appropriate for the kind of play that has been going on lately, hahaha! -Amatster

Justrab,
I totally agree with you 100% the program is in a "State of Emergency" The only hopes of change is that Verti resigns! I doubt highly Monzo has the guts to fire a coach and I know for a fact that the president of the school thinks everything is fine. Just right now I got a call from a friend and his wife. They have been season ticket holders for the past twenty years. They told me many of their friends and people they usually see friday night in the stands stop coming to games. They asked if I would want their remaining tickets this season because they are so upset with the coaching staff. They also asked, if a new coach does not take over the program next year. If I would take over their season seats till a new staff took over. How sad, everytime I look around someone else is gone or someone is telling me their not coming back. These are good people, fans that have been loyal to the program for many years. Some of them are gettng old now and they can not put up with it any longer. It has been going on for over a decade now and things are not going to get better unless change occurs soon! -Amatster

Amatster,
The solution would be to get tanked BEFORE you go to the game. We have plenty of parking and are located right around the corner.

Amat,
Haha. U seen that hit Acuna made in the Carson game? That guy is special. I've seen him lay out a few guys. He's going to be an over-achiever. For a minute there, I'm pretty sure he was averaging one big hit a game. I love it, absolutely love it! I love to see players lay the hat. This team I hope can bring things back to the norm. Its going to take alot of work and prayer, lol. Seriously, I don't know what those officials at Amat are thinking. -Amatster

Amat,
This guys been around a bit to know Willhans Ili is an over-achiever. Willhans Ili was a freak of nature. Joey Getheral the fastest player in the history of Amat another freak of nature. Eric Bienemy another freak of nature. If you looked at these guys you wouldn't think anything, but on the field these guys were giants. The Ili guy was a site to see being triple teamed and still making plays, but the hing that stood out in my mind about this player was the fans loved him! The defense would walk of the field in the payoffs after a big stop. Ili would celebrate, the crowd stood up, roared and waved these white towels. I never in all my 30 years of watching Amat football witnessed the cowd so into it. Crazy, those were some of Amat's best glory days! -Amatster

I watched the frosh game against Carson, and this Acuna kid #7 is the real deal. I saw him hit that Carson TB like a pick up truck. Took his lights out and they had to take him out of the game for awhile. High fived his parents who happened to sit next to me, told me he played for Snoop dog during his JAA days at Rowland.

Pretty good hit for a 13 year old kid. Hope we don't lose kids like him.

Amat,
Spoon's a good position coach, no doubt. I may have never played for him homes, lol. But I have played for the best defensive co-ordinator ever to come through Amat and that's Coach Rogers! Anyone disagree? Bar none one of the best HS defensive co-ordinators ever. Check his team stats from 92-94 it was ridiculous. Team's rarely scored. -Amatster

Amat,
Merit Hemenway has his hands tied. The self appointed President calls all the shots. MHemenway just posted in the Amat website today no alhcoholic beverage container on the premises. I can't watch another game sober, lol. I'm going to have to call it a year. All these rules being enforced to mess with fans because their losing. I hope the fans boo this friday if things get out of hand. They need to hear it, maybe they'll do something about it! -Amatster

Amat,
Sean Koelle is the strength and conditioning coach, lol No wonder our varsity players look like cream puffs, haha! -Amatster

I'm going to have to agree with the Amat parent. The free safety #7 on the freshman squad is and probably could be the hardest hitting free safety to come through Amat. That tailback #5 is no doubt the player that Amat has been waiting for. He is a D1 back, he has moves, he's big, fast and strong. -Amatster

GHS Freshman and chino hills frosh are gonna have alot of great games over the next 4 years, nobodys even close in the sierra league, though damien lucked out this year agaist ghs frosh, dont look for that to happen again, ghs frosh rocked co frosh, tied eldo and missed extra point for win. chino hills is only school that can hang with these boys.ghs best 2 frosh played varsity this year, look out sierra league dynasty coming

I think that MHphd ( and the RSM President ) felt that he should resign to "spend more time with his family" : )

His next best option was to come back to amat so that MSGr could be President (and defacto principal) without much push back. MHphd pretty much has his hands tied too.

Anyone out there dispute that?

Agreed!!

Leave SPOON out of this.... If there is anyone that bleeds more Blue than Spoony, I'd like to see them.

Though I'm sure Manzo will chase him too!!

:-)

Peace

I'm not going to stand by and let Coach Spoon get slandered by some idiot poster who has never played for the man. Many parents will agree with me that coach Spoon is a piss and vinegar coach who brings intensity and knowledge everyday to practice and games. He has coached many of our elite athletes for the past 15 years at Bishop Amat.

Don't disrespect the man because he has too much credibility.

My comment regarding the freshman quarterback has nothing to do whether he plays varsity next year or ever, but rather is a reflection on the state of the "Program" as his dad is an 82 alumnus and I assume has raised him on Amat history, games, the whole shot only to possibly pull him from the program.

There is too much history to have a few bad apples in Amat's management group (so to speak) allow the whole school to run downward. Additionally, non-athletic families came to Amat for its dual athletic/academic program and I am sure there is a revenue (tuition) equation for the school to see the football program ripples through that whole campus. It always has and the schools demise or future success is deeply rooted in a stable program.

Patricio came to Amat in 78/79 and had the program from unranked in the valley to Big Five Conference runner-up in 83. He even had them highly ranked in 81 with the a lot of the SGV All Valley squad being composed of Amat (6 players) . Prior to that Amat had not had but 2 players in 6 or 7 years.

Where is Hemingway in all of this mess? Is this what he came back to Amat? He could have stayed at RSM or the new JSerra.

Wilhans Illi is that overachieving player. All 5'10" 270lbs of pure muscle.

Thanks Joe!

As also a Father of 2 Graduates and 2 more to follow in the coming 4 years...

I too hope that the ship gets righted soon!!

Peace

'83 = True Lancer

We need guys like you back!

Martinez went to Paraclete, took Coach Hagerty with him later on and turned their program into a CIF Power. It doesn't take much.

We'll keep hoping!

Oh and another thing...

Great call on Patricio!! Yes, it was a great time with him, Woods, Rogers, Martinez (The Dean, remember him??) Avalos etc... The old coaches office on Saturday mornings!! (Remember the smell???)

What ever happened to "Old-School" coaches like that???? Man, I remember you wouldn't even want to look those guys in the eye... They could scare/intimidate the $h!t out of you, but you would go through a wall for them!!

Peace

Agreed, Joe.....

Just a little fyi... The AD's secretary (that you mentioned ran the show for a long time) was reassigned by the CURRENT AD Manzo. He was an absolute idiot to her and she didn't need it so she agreed with the reassignment and is now I believe in the Alumni office.

Hear's hoping that the change starts soon!!....

Happy Halloween!!

Great insights from someone who, obviously, has been around a long time and went to school at the time of our last turnaround. You've seen first hand that it can be done with minor changes - Immediately. Patricio came back - turned things around. Salter (not that there was a problem with Parades) - quick championship. Wiard - girl's basketball championships. Kendrena - baseball championships. Lokar - basketball championship in the FIRST year. We should have dome everything possible to lock him, and coaches like that, forever. And talk about classy gear, I remember those basketball players wearing shirts with Amat Basketball - est.1957, that said something on the back like "Rooted in Tradition, Building for the Future, Committed to Excellence Today!!!". Where have those kind of coaches gone? Guaranteed that if the MD coordinator or the old Bonnies coach was hired amat would be headed to the playoffs this season and in a position to continue their success.

I do differ to extent, on the importance of "support" from the AD. Sometimes it is best for the coach to simply have *permission* to run the program as the coach sees fit and to just stay out of the way. That is why Parades as the AD/Football Coach was so successful, so that plan of yours could work. Although Paredes had Martinez and Lokar do much of his work during football season. I do agree that the present AD doesn't seem like he really wants to be the AD and I'm not sure why it is so hard to find somebody. DiFiori never really wanted to do the job and his secretary kind of ran the show, making sure that everything was first rate. But it seems she got tired of that and changed positions.

I'm not certain, either, how much power the AD even has to help, as every decision must be taken to the next level anyway. There was talk that MSGr wanted to bring over the St Paul AD at the same time he brought over the St Paul boys basketball coach. That may have been as big a disaster for the athletic program as it's been for basketball...who knows?

So to me, we all know the saying about what runs downhill. I think it starts at the top and has trickled down. Something must be done.

who cares about a freshman qb..no threats dad..play with the big boys before you put your son in the hall of fame...
The only kid that i have seen have any chance at the varsity level is the freshman tailback.

WOW THAT WAS DEEP Amat83 . I REALLY hope things change for you guys .

FIGHT ON

TM

All,

Terrible news about the training staff and her strikes/protests.

However everything (including HER actions) go back to ONE PERSON, the AD MANZO!! HE IS TERRIBLE!!! Yes, we've heard he has no say, it's Msgr's and Hemmingway's fault, yada, yada.... But think of it this way, if one of YOUR Direct reports at your job did any of these things, who's ultimately responsible?? Yes, YOU!!!

I've said from the Day that Coach Verti was hired, he NEVER had a chance!! Has NEVER had the TRUE/TOTAL SUPPORT of his BOSS --- the AD MANZO!! No excuses for Verti, just stating the truth. Proof is in the pudding and it's just not getting done right now.... But again would you succeed without your boss' support?? NO!!

Take a step back and look at the TOTAL AMAT ATHLETIC PROGRAM ------

Football -- We all know those struggles

Boy's Basketball -- marginal - AGAIN NO SUPPORT FROM THE AD - due to the Head coaches relationship with Coach Wiard (see below)

Girl's Basketball -- Yes, very successfull, but NO INVOLVEMENT FROM THE AD!!! - AD cannot stand Coach Wiard, don't believe me, as any, any Girls BB parent - Hasn't gone to ONE Awards Banquet since he (Manzo) took over as AD -- EVEN WHEN THEN WON A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!!

Wrestling - Yes, a consistent winner, but again NO INVOLVMENT FROM THE AD.

Track/CC - Lodolo is the one keeping those programs afloat....

Softball - Coaches Martin and Golhardt are established coaches who basically coach that team on auto-pilot with no help with the AD's office.

OK, I know you're thinking... BASEBALL

Baseball - Coach Nieto has done a very good job of managing Coach Kendrena's players to a CIF title and taking them up a notch. The AD actually has eliminated the long standing connections with some of the Valley's youth programs that have fed that Amat Baseball program for over 20 years. But YET, he rides his cart with "Selected" parents that happen to donate $$$$ to the program or who run his $nack bar and $ouvenir stand. It's been stated on here in the past... The AD ran for State Office in the short past and that IS EXACTLY WHAT HE IS, a POLITICIAN!!!

My point... do I have a hard on for the AD??? Yes and No, I have seen this man in action over the last 3+ years and he has NO IDEA of what Amat's traditions, philosophies and other things that has made Amat, Amat over the last 20+ years!!

Need an example, simply said..... Amat Nation, wtf is that??? Any of our previous AD's I'm sure would have squashed that one right away. IT WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED!!!!

You Long Time Amat faithful, remember our more classier gear, like.... "Amat Football: We don't Rebuild, We Reload!!" etc.... Remember, the AD is the one who approves what is printed and sold.

Simply said, the very, very 1st change that needs to happen is at the AD Level. Ultimately, this position would be the one accepting initial applications from potential applicants.

The way I look at it is, in order to hire a coach and pay him what we should pay him, he would have to probably take the Head Football position along with either PE Dept Head or more appropriately Athletic Director (or as Manzo has had it changed to Director of Athletics!!) in order to justify a higher salary.

Am I alone in this thinking??? No, you ask ANY COACH in the FB program and they know that he is the root cause of the demise of Amat Athletics... that along with ten's of my fellow Amat Alumni from 80' to 98' whom I've spoken to...

Let's get that process rolling.... Start with the AD and watch how quickly things will turn around....

AMAT PEOPLE THERE ARE ONLY TWO FRESHMAN PLAYERS THIS YEAR THAT COULD PLAY VARSITY RIGHT NOW. THAT IS ANDERSON THE TB/LB AND ACUNA FS/WR. THE PARENTS WOULD HAVE TO RELEASE THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE PROBABLY BOTH UNDER AGE. ITS TOO LATE IN THE SEASON. THEY DON'T HAVE A SHOT AT THE LAST TWO GAMES. WHY RISK FUTURE TALENT? ALL TOGETHER ON THE FRESHMAN SQUAD A TOTAL OF ABOUT SEVEN PLAYERS SHOULD MOVE UP TO VARSITY NEXT YEAR. FIVE OF THEM HAVE A GOOD CHANCE TO START AS SOPHOMORES AND THE OTHER TWO SHOULD GET SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF PLAYING TIME. THATS HOW I EVALUATE IT JUST FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN. "FRESHMAN PARENT"

To Amat Old Timer,
I'm glad we captured your heart and the hearts of many back in the 80's and early 90's. There was nothing like being an underdog and spoiling a someones season. Playing for Coach Rogers was special and Parades had his sh*t together along with a great staff. That year our coaches fought and argued early on that season because we were struggling. I never seen a staff so passionate about winning that they wanted to kill each other. Beating the No. 2 team in the country was spectacular! Carson went undefeated the rest of the season that year to become City Champs. If they would of beat us that year they would have been national champs because we later beat the No. 1 team in the country which was Loyola in the third round of playoffs. That season was a bunch of no namers and that's when the names came off of the back of our jerseys. That year we were a solid group of over achievers, hard nosed, had great team unity and a good work ethic. I met a Carson player over a decade later that was a captain for that team and he's still bitter about that loss and how we cheated them of a national title, haha. I miss those days of signing autographs for little kids after the games over by the locker room. People think I'm bullsh*ting when I tell them that story, lol. I tip my hat off to all you loyal fans and families that came out to watch us back in the day. I still appreciate it till this day! Now I'm a fan and I wish our teams were more like the teams of the 80's and early 90's. I take my twin boys to the games and they asked Dad why are we here? The teams terrible. I look at the poor little guys and I don't know what to say. Both my boys have always dreamed of playing for Amat, but now I think they are having second thoughts. It's very frustrating and painful! If you played for Amat back then or had a son on the team. It wasn't just a football game it was a way of life! I may talk negative sometimes, but its the truth.....it's time for change.....Mighty are the men who wear the Blue and Gold! Go Lancers! -Amatster

Amat,
Count me in on the "Get rid of Verti campaign" I watched that guy while he was the OC for DiFiori and didn't impress me. DiFiori was no good and hiring is counter part doesn't help. DiFiori's a funny guy though saying he's going to resign to spend time w/ family when he went right back to coaching over at La Salle. I'm sure glad he resigned though, but Amat should of hired someone else. Until, we get faculty in there that cares about football things will not change. The AD Monzo hasn't done sh*t. This Msgr self appointed himself president of the school cause him and Arch Bishop Mahoney are b*tt buddies. He just pimp slapped Hemmingway to the side. So he could call all the shots. Other programs in our league and in the pack5 conference play say that their schools revolve around the football program. I'm sure there is more to it besides play calling. I wonder about their strength trainning. There players look like they don't even lift, no definition or density in their muscles. Probably because their spoiled, lol. These guys lift in air conditioned gym, haha. Wow, they need to workout in the elements. It's not like they play in an air conditioned dome! But then again they have a female trainer that babies them too. Giving players days off and sometimes weeks off for minor injuries. Some players sit out practice cause they forgot their inhaler, lmao. Some players out for a week sometimes two weeks for a mild concusion. Don't get a sprained ankle you'll be out for a couple of weeks, lol. Hyper extended knee a month. How many times we played with or had concusions and other minor injuries and played through them or sat out a day or so? Her entire staff missed one of the games to go on strike. I happen to notice that watching on of their lower level games a kid got injured and there was no trainer in site. She neglected her duties cause she felt they shouldn't play that day because of poor air quality. Parents in the stands were complaining about it. So jeopardize the players safety to prove a point, haha amazing! They need to hire a male trainer or someone that wont baby these guys like little mamas boys. I hope things change and get rid of all these slugs. -Amatster

Oh and Coach Spoon is the one that created that Amat Nation t-shirt, lol. Our Jr All American and Alhambra HS coach transfer, lol. So, Verti promotes this guy to varsity, lmao. This the kind of sh*t going on around there. Spoon belongs in the lower ranks. No wonder sh*ts all messed up! -Amatster

Joe Amat,
Msgr has no clue when it comes to financing or fundraising. All he knows how to do is lose money and spend money. Hiring a coach, getting athletes and keeping them are an investment like you said. Brings in fans, keeps fans, brings college recruiters and extra money during playoffs. We've lost at least a thousand fans per home game. Alot of loyal fans that just love watching Amat play, left during DiFiori's time and if their were any of those fans left well they are now gone because things are worse. I figure things can't get any worse because we're at the bottom. The only way is up! Hopefully, Verti will do the right thing and resign. Amat will go with him forever like they did DiFiori. I never realized how much I would miss Parades or Salter, lol. If Amat was smart they would fire Verti and go straight to the Tribune with who they hire so kids will enroll or transfer in. If they hire somebody that is well respected as a coach and has proven himsef at the D1 level or an athlete that has played pro ball, hint- hint I'm sure kids would stay & others would come! I'm outta here enough gab for one day! -Amatster

Amat has never won a CIF Championship with their biggest, fastest, strongest team. Amat's best team on paper is Eric Bienemy's senior year 1986. They had Bienemy (Univ. Colorado), Mazio Royster (USC), JR Phillips (Pro baseball player), Troy Auzzene (Cal Berkley), Richard Garrick (Airforce Academy), Eric Gideon (Ucla), Ken & Kevin Szalonek (No. Arizona Univ), Stephon Pace (USC), Derrick Zdarstick (Unlv) and they finshed their season 11-1 a loss in the second round that was haunting Amat for years was soon after known as the second round jinx for them. Your very right about Amat's championship teams being over achievers. Amat's '92 team won CIF Championship with a CIF Player of the Year being a 5' 10" 270 lb. nose gaurd leading the way. Granted the team was surrounded with young talent, well coached, hard nose athletes and a team that was united. They ended up breaking the CIF record for wins in a season 15-0 and this team was average in size. Amat then choked again with one of their most talented teams in 1994. They were ranked #1 in the country by USA Today. Daylon McCutcheon & Kory Minor lead this team, but fell short to Mater Dei in week 14 to finish the season 13-1. Amat's next shot would be '95 I think with Ralph Brown leading the way & that squad was bigtime over achievers because I never really heard of anyone on that team. So, yes Amat has always been a team full of over achievers. Surrounded by some talent, good coaching and hard working kids! -Amatster

It shouldn't even be about someone "kicking in" the extra cash for a salary. Does anyone else notice that attendance is a little down? How about an extra 500 -1000 fans at each of the 5 home games? Or how much extra $$$ will be made for a round or two in the playoffs? How about a dozen extra kids that choose to enroll because we have a decent football team?
For the life of me I can't figure out how that common sense is lost on MSGr? Maybe there are no accounting classes in the seminary!

A little EXTREME there CPA .I HIGHLY DOUBT a change with a few games left , but with $$$ anything should be possible . I hear Coach Dorrell might be on his way out ...

TM

Amat CPA et al Amat,

I think your concept is great, but as you may know we will need the administration to accept or allow the "fund" to exist and not place it into the general coffer.

I thought I had read the 100K plus HS coaches in the OC are supplemented by alumnus funds, and while, we, at least I, am not living in Newport Harbor it would not take much for former players, supporters whatever to shore up a fund. Perhaps 25 varsity classes times 75 players each class and $100 annually would amount to nearly nearly $190K which would pay for a bigger name and assistants. However, with the SAC debt they may take for some other purposes.

I hate this "Amat Nation" crap as for us older alumnus is was never about being better than the ESGV, but it was simply being part of something special. Did someone really print something like that on a shirt. They should burn them today! We don't need monsters, we simply need to get back to what made Amat special.

We did not have this redundant position of "President" in the 80's and I have no clue as to what management oversight it brings whether it was Carroll or some other lay persons.

I would love to look at the books as the gross receipts from the games have to be substantially down. I recall people who hated Amat came just to see them play and who they played. I doubt that still happens.

If all the alumni can chip in $10 to $100 to pay for a new Head Coach.....I'm in. What is going rate for a top D1 coach $100k maybe $120k a year. Let's see...the school will pick up the first $60k and the alumni can pick up the balance....let's see that would take 600 hard core fans to chip in $100 a piece or 1200 supporters for an average $50 a pop. My accounting firm will handle the payroll services for free.

Let's start a "get rid of Verti campaign" and create a contribution cash fund to help pay for a new head coach. We need a change now not later.

Justrab,
I hope the freshman qb doesn't transfer out. The freshman team is ok they just lack big linemen. The qb your talking about broke something in his hand. The starting qb is just as good, but is probably the fastest player on the team. I thik he should convert to reciever in order to get a D1 scholarship. Plus, this freshman team has a bigtime rb, some wide outs and probably the best safety in the valley #7. With this class some new recruits things should change soon enough. The question is if Amat doesn't make a decision soon and announce it to the public and media will players still come? I know they want to their just waiting to see who's going to take over! -Amatster

Maybe, Verti is playing kids because of who their parents are and not their strengths because that's why he was hired?

Amat old timer,

Great comments, can anyone tell me when that last time Amat had the biggest team and won because of it??? We have always been the under sized but the way Amat handled themselves with poise, execution, dedication, heart and love for the program is what had made Amat a powerhouse.

I remember watching games under DiFore where lack of discipline would cost us dearly time and time again. I remember seeing a running back a couple years ago chest bump his dad in the end zone (security guard) on a touchdown, 15 yards on the kickoff. That is intollerable and stuff like that is what drives the Alumni crazy.

I was hoping Verti would bring back all the traditional reasons that put Amat as an elite team. Yes, there were other Schools in the valley winning at the lower divisions and I take nothing away from them but Amat was rich in tradition and pride. Look at Amat's sidelines, it used to be a who's who of Amats tradition. It is now who know who and jammed packed.

Kids would be driving from all over to play at Amat. In the early 80's Amat had the lock on private school kids from Alhambra, Arcadia, South Pasadena and surroundings. These kids are now going to St. Francis, Damien and other schools.

Verti must step down as soon as possible, name a coach ASAP and follow the suggestions of the panel if one is put together. Start a search now so we can get the message out that the tradition will be back, catch these young freshman parents before they transfer their kids. A new coach can bring stability to the program instantly and that is what is needed

Justrab,

I hope you are not right about the freshman QB. New CIF rules allow for freshman to transfer one time without a change of residence.

I hear that Verti is playing kids because of who their parents are not their strengths. If this freshman is that good move him up for the remainder of the season and see what he can do. Heck, Mater Dei did it three years ago and now he will be one of the highest recruited QB's next year.

They would see Hoecoming Candidates in their formals stroll the grounds

lol.. it doesn't get any better then that..lol

there are high quality coaches here in the valley that already know how to beat the OC teams and win at the highest level. I just don't think amat is working hard enough to court them.

Amat Old Timer ...

GREAT COMMENT !

Amatster,

I hope we can get things turned around, but I hear that the freshman quarterback may check out (back to Los Osos) very soon. Since his dad is a graduate (great DB) it sounds like the problems, issues, confusion with the program are permeating all levels. We always had guys check out (20 freshman from my class on the football team did not come back in the early 80's), but most were academic, religious or general lack of desire to work in a structured private school environment.

It just sounds like things are getting much worse.

I was not a fan of the Amat program. I remember reading the Saturday sports section headlining Amat's Superstars of it's day....Bienemy, Royster, Fields, Fletcher, McCutcheon, Wagner, Getheral, McCleskey and so on and so forth.....

The Amat team was sort of an SGV all star team that would go against the Long Beach all stars in LB Poly and against the OC all stars in Mater Dei and Servite and of course our biggest rival St. Paul and Loyola. Then there would also be the "big game" against the city champs Carson. As Amat victories grew in numbers against these giant foes, so did our fan base in the SGV. I remembered watching my very first Amat game in the 80's against a very huge and fast Carson team. Amat looked like a JV team compared to Carson, yet they appeared very composed, very professional and disciplined. I was in awe when they beat the much bigger Carson with their flawless execution and god send speed. They won me over and now I've been a fan for life. My two sons graduated from Amat and I also joined the boosters.

Nowadays, reading the Saturday Tribune is just not the same any more without such highly touted HS superstars gracing the morning headlines as it certainly is not the same here in the SGV to see a playoffless Amat team.

As to MSGr discontinuing the Fiesta in lieu of starting his "Extravaganza" it not only created a little financial hit ,b ut also a TREMENDOUS opportunity to build raphor within the community.

People thoughout the SGV would come to the school and little kids would look forward to growing up and being a student(player) there someday. They would see Hoecoming Candidates in their formals stroll the grounds and it was always great when it worked out that there was a home game at the same time. the students working all of the carnival booths always were presented as cheery, polite, and good role models that parents would notice and keeping in mind when choosing a high school for their kids later.

Finally it gave faculty, staff, parents and boosters an opportunity to work together towards a common cause which always fostered the old "Amat Family" mentality that has now decomposed into "Amat Nation".

The bottom line is that ALL of these little things have contributed to the slow erosion that we have seen.

The good news is that it will only take a few minor shifts in thinking to right the ship and turn things around.
(as I type with fingers crossed)

Glad to see other people seeing what Msgr. Carroll has done for Amat. Yes we have new Gym. Put his name on it and retire him. I can remember the carnivals and the money that they used to make. Big dollars $$$$$$.

As for Verti, Mrs. Wiard was for the hiring or at least that was her front on the issue. If we cannot afford a quality coach than the athletes will not come. It seems that Amat increases the tuition every year. Here is a thought, raise the tuition $5.00 across the board each month and dedicate that money to help and pay for quality coaching. Football is the one sport that you can not neglect, it brings in more money than any other sport and it actually funds many of the sports. It is simple econimics, take care of the bread winner and everyone will prosper. Amat probably sells more season tickets that any team in the Valley along with pre sale tickets this money goes to Amat and is not shared with visiting schools such as the gate money.

The Amat Alumni donate each year and faithfully, the golf tournament regularly brings in approximately $40,000 with the extravaganza bringing in at least that much anually. Why are we not going after the high dollar Alumni such as Haden, McKay, McDonnald, and so on. You see the Amat football game program, the thing is huge. There is not another game program in the valley that can touch it. $$$$$$ There are ways to increase the pay for the coach and we need to find them.

As for the hatred in the La Puente area, whats this mexilancer comment. There is no room for this on the blog.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME . Game Of The Week HAS GOT TO BE ...

GLENDORA vs Ayala .Sorry La Puente / Duarte fans .

TM

Game of the week:
Duarte and La Puente
Friday 11/02/2007
kickoff-7pm

You would be amazed that Amat still gets great athletes. They have a big time tailback on their freshman squad named J. Anderson a D1 guy for sure. There's about 9 freshman that should go varsity next year. Amat's freshman team is a solid group, but not as much depth as usual. Their still getting their fair amount of talent. The question is will they stay with the program. I hope so and wish for things to change. That way people in the San Gabriel Valley can get a feel for what D1 or Pack5 football is all about. Its a different level and speed! I know why some people still send their kids there. Because of tradition & history. Its the only Pack5 school in the area and the players get looked at regaurdless because scouts are always searching for talent at that level. If you've been around high school ball enough especially at the D1 or Pack5 level then you know the difference. Amat's a great place to play your freshman year. Get use to the speed, transfer out to a local high school, its like slow motion & become a superstar like McBride of Los Altos did till he broke his leg. Anwayz- even though Amat is still losing you would be surprized really how good they are! -Amatster

Anonymous at October 29, 2007 03:28 PM

Good points being made. If the current regime is not changed after the season ends in 2 weeks, why would any parent with a gifted athlete kid (D1 abilities?) play for Verti with his track record? I know my two sons (twins) who are playing JAA ball are two years away from entering HS, and there is no way they'd be playing for Verti. I'd rather have them play for Farrar or Gano or Bogan unless Amat gets their head out of their A$$ and change course.

Hey TM,
Nahh, I know your good with the Amat guys. I didn't mean to sound like if you were against us. If I did its because I'm very passionate about our football. No worries, maybe if we had SC guys instead of Ucla guys running our program we would be a winning program, lol. Go Trojans!
-Amatster

To whiners,
Obviously you don't know what your talking about. Verti has been at Amat for awhile. When he was offensive co-ordinator for DiFiori they where no good and they have gotten worse pal. DiFiori was a descent defensive co-ordinator and a good coach at Temple City, but that's not pack 5 or division 1 football. DiFiori quit cause he wanted to spend time with his family, lol. That was a bogus excuse because he's coaching over at La Salle with Elar Gallagar. The truth is DiFiori couldn't succeed at this level. Verti was his assistant that took over and things are getting worse. People are spending money on private schools. We have lost players to Damian, Mater Dei, Loyola, St. Paul and even Crespi. They are not going to come to a program that has not been winning, has been losing players. What you should be doing is bringing in the atheletes or showing your face at the local private schools, attending the local churches with players, holding catholic flag playoffs, camps, pop warner & jr all american games. It's not recruiting once they ask you questions. I've worn Amat gear out in public and have had numerous people ask me about how to apply or transfer in. Plus, the people have every right to bash Carroll. He has done nothing for the program. The interview panel gave him three top picks for head coach. None being Verti. He used the excuse we can't afford any of them when really they had already chose Verti. Bottom line, is your getting what you pay for. Sixty grand at Amat for a head coach is chump change when the Mater Dei offensive co-ordinator is making over ninety thousand annualy. Carroll also took away the fiesta which grossed over a hundred grand in one weekend. That helped keep tuition down and he's not cutting any atheletes breaks as they do at other private schools and like Amat did in the past. So before you open your mouth know what your talking about! Mr. know it all, don't know anything. That's why the program is where its at Oh everything will be okay. Ten years later and where we at, we're n the same situation!!!!!

Amatster ,
I DO NOT NEED ANYONE FROM BISHOP AMAT to think I am against BISHOP AMAT . I AM NOT . I worked hard to get back into good terms with you guys , and hopefully things stay that way . Now off to fight traffic for a few hours ...

What's up TM? I doubt that's the person who tried sabotaging Amat's program. That person, one of two are both good people and still want to see Amat succeed. This has been an on going problem. It all stems from the top. Starting from the president, to the principal, to the atheletic director. Not one of these officials is doing what's best for the high school. They say it's all about money and they can't afford to hire these coaches. What there not realizing is that its an investment. For about the past 10 years Amat has been steadily going downhill & they have lost about 50% of their fan base which equals dollars. If that official was against hiring Verti than I'm pretty sure they knew what they were talking about. That program needs someone that has proven themself at the division 1 level of high school football. Hopefully, they make the decision before December 1st because that's just before testings and open houses to high schools. Thanks for wanting to see us get back up on our feet. I even have rival teams like Long Beach Poly coaches asking when we're going to rebound. We still have the horses coming and some that are already there. We just need a General to lead the way!!!

Anonymous @ 10:29. It is an interesting debate. CO's record of 2-1-1 against D2 (including a win against about the worst team in ALL D2 in Claremont...and by just 6 points). Is respectable. We are 3-0 against 3 teams equal or better than the 4 CO played, and the rest of their schedule I'd guess we'd likely be undefeated against as well. Let them come play the rest of the Sierra (Diamond Bar, Chino, Ayala & Chino Hills) and then see if they win that league with your 1-0-1 start. Assume Claremont is DB and Ayala is Upland and you are 2-1-1 in league with Chino Hills to go. Good luck with that! You make a good
