Volleyball Top 10

Above: Bonita players celebrating victory over top-ranked Los Altos on Tuesday.
Girls Volleyball Top 10 Rankings
1. Los Altos (17-3) Taking care of business
2. Bonita (8-2) Swept its past five matches
3. South Hills (7-6) Finding its rhythm
4. Walnut (11-4) Drops one after splitting two
5. Diamond Bar (9-7) Battling inconsistency
6. Glendora (7-6) Big win over Ayala
7. Bishop Amat (11-5) Hitting its dead zone
8. San Dimas (11-5) Road to VVL title runs through the Saints
9. Gladstone (19-9) Rolling through Montview
10. Northview (9-2) Falls after losing last two
Note: Rankings and records are based on matches played thru Oct. 13

Above: St. Lucy's celebrates five-game victory over Glendora on Wednesday.
Comments: First off, if these rankings were based as of today, the top two would obviously be flip-flopped. Bonita definitely showed its ability with Tuesday's four-game win over Los Altos. But the Conquerors showed they are no slouch, surviving five match points before the Bearcats finally broke through. The rematch is scheduled for Nov. 1, so circle your calendar. ... Is there a tougher league than the Sierra? While the Miramonte boasts the top two clubs in the area, its harder to find a more balanced league in the Sierra League, where Ayala, Diamond Bar, Glendora and Chino Hills began the week separated by a match and now you can add St. Lucy's to the mix after the Regents beat Chino Hills on Monday....South Hills, after struggling with inconsistency, appears to have found its second wind after winning its last three, including a win over Walnut. The Mustangs hope to pay back their San Antonio League rival when they host the Huskies next Tuesday...The Valle Vista League is once again San Dimas' to win or lose after the Saints exercised their might with back-to-back wins over contenders Northview and Ganesha.

Ganesha did extreamly well this year, great plays, good kills and they have an outstanding setter
Last week for league play
Go Regents
Smola for MVP!! underrated player on St Lucy team
The game last night at Diamond Bar could have been won by DB but of couple of the name players again failed to consistently perform especially in the first two games. It was a case of little too late. Smola turned up big for SL. neither Remy of Brown distinguished themselves, the other role players decided the match. By the By Top Gun has contributed many good players to this year's High School rosters, so let's lay off the this club's player's are better than that club theory
that would be great, unfortunately its not that easy. Some girls play for free, because they are that good. So I doubt they would leave their old (free)club teams for new ones. How ever IT WOULD BE GREAT!
Here is the catch, it would have to be a coach who doesnt have any of his/her high school players in the squad.
But like I said earlier, Tui Tuitama will be coaching the 18's for Heights.
She is great because she brings all her Cal State L.A. girls (alumni) to play against them!!! Some of those girls are playing international ball!!!
It would be great to get the 10 best players from our area and make a club team. Who would be willing to coach for a reasonable price. I bet you would be really successful at JO's
Club depends on how good your daughter is. You can have a great 18 1's team (no matter what club you go to) and an aweful 18 2's team. The best coaches go to the 1s in all levels and the rest of the levels are to increase basic skills. If your daughter doesn't make the 1's team or elite (many different names) the coaches can be JC Players with little coaching experience. You really have to be careful. Parents really have to accept there daughters level and place them accordingly. They'll improve if they are placed on the right team and not just riding the bench. They need playing time, without breaking the bank.

you cant rate them on quality, it all depends on the coaching and the girls they get!
Price wise, well everyone who knows, JUST POST!
Can someone rank all the clubs in the area? Base on price and experience of coaching staffs.
Hacienda Heights - They practice at Hacienda Rec Center (im almost positive).
What city is that club in? Where do they practice?
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here is one good example!!
Heights Volleyball club will be charging $1,000.00
In payments and Fundraising will easily drop the price even more!!!!
The coaches will Tui Tuitama (an ALL AMERICAN SETTER)and Junior College Coach., and few others.
It will have a 14's , 16's, and 18's HOPEFULLY EVEN A 12's. Practice will be 3 times a week, with CATZ training (catz is the campany that trains the US Mens Volleyball team) on non tournament saturdays!
Its not because of the players its because of the coaching!!
Good coaches will do anything possible to get their kids to play year round ball. Even pay for them!!! Parent only know so much. Some dont even know it exists! Maybe for soccer or basketball at the park, but thats about it!
If coaches dont support or advertise it, then who is to blame!!!!
Unfortnately, there are less places for playing in the area. But if enough people consistantly bug rec centers and make it a sport as demanding and basketball, then things can change!!!
I have seen coaches start their own clubs just to make this work.
Here are a few schools that are lower income that have been trying to change this!!!
Holy Family
La Puente
Los Altos (which at one point was as bad and the other local schools around them).
Gabrielino
El Rancho
South El Monte (however it hasnt been easy for them)
San Fe Spring
Wilson L.A. (yes the same coach turned both the softball and volleyball programs around).
I can go on and on.
If more coaches would support the sport FOR BOTH MALE AND FEMALE, things could change.
true there are opportunities. Most clubs have non travel teams that keep the prices down too. But it is not an affordable sport. Can you name a CIF title team that has come from a low socioecnomic area? Division 3 or higher? Look at the CIF rankings. The top teams are all coastal or private $$$ schools
Thats so NOT TRUE!
Parents just have to look around.
Take a look at Gabrielino - one girl played for top gun all the other girls played for Starlings- AND they charges 600, but if you cant pay that, then you sell chocolates, or do something to fundraise.
Coaches and Parents need to get on the ball - if they fundraise early(through out the year "booster club") they can easily send a full team to play club.
Another team to look at is bell gardens - those girls have been playing for crush since they were 14. They are all short girls but can dig and place balls all day long.
Parents DO YOUR RESEARCH!!
How about the the J.V. and Frosh Soph level.
Any outstanding players out there??

Unfortunately vbl success does relate to socio-economic status. The girls that can afford to play club get better. The teams that have more club players are better. There are some exceptions but they are few and far between. Local success maybe(Ganesha), but not CIF title success. Wilson last year was carried by a club standout.
Interesting side note, I dont think the middle from South Hills plays club(yet).
I think this blog is awesome. So many schools and players being talked about from diverse backgrounds. Volleyball has to be the best sport that is barely holding ground in the US. The truth is that, unfortunately because of Title 9 and the massive amounts of football scholarships, this is no longer seen as a male sport. Hopefully press coverage like this can help our sport at the grass roots level. On the positive note it is great to know that their are lots of opportunities for our female athletes to play at the college level. Thank you Fred for giving the San Gabriel Valley a venue for the sport we love.
When you talk about the best players in the valley I agree with the hitters but not the setter. A setter is supposed to make the hitter better. I have not seen that in her and the attitude you talk about detracts from the team game that this is. Anyone that knows volleyball can tell you the setters job is to make their hitters better.
SD mom,
torrie brown and amanda remy were originally club west players then tranfered to impact,
toomay played club west fro 2 years then moved to top gun. playing at club west this year.
Anonymous (whichever one you are),
Just for reference, St Paul lost to Diamond Bar in an early season tournament.
These are the best players I've seen so far: Jade Esquivel from Los Altos, Amanda Remy from St. Lucy's, Torrie Brown from Diamond Bar, The setter from Bishop Amat (even though she has a bad attitude),The middle from South Hills and There's a couple good players from Bonita the outside hitter and #11.
You don't think volleyball is a sport that has been led predominantly by the wealthy in this country? Interesting-please tell us of all the teams who are from low income areas that are winning in this sport? Right or wrong, that's just the way it is. As for the Communist talk-that's crazy talk. That nation believes in winning at all costs so the fact that it is a poor country had very little to do with anything. Interesting stuff though. By the way, Ganesha bloggers aren't talking smack about anyone, they are just promoting their team.
Ganesha played terrible against San Dimas and lost in three. San Dimas is a great program with great coaches and we were happy to get a chance at a league championship. It's not over though.
Good luck to all from our combined Inland/San Gabriel areas in the playoffs!
I think South Hills can beat many teams especially the Regents. All they have is Amanda Remy who isn't the best but is astonishing at some parts. She can be taken down so easily. South Hills beat Los Altos the other night. They've been pulling ahead lately. Walnut beat St. Lucy's in the tournament this past weekend at Club West. Though SH beat Walnut once in the summer and during league a few weeks ago. They play SH tomorrow at 5 at Walnut. I may go and watch which should be an amazing game and nail biting.
What is up with all these socio-economic talks?
rich vs poor...
club vs non-club...
Why is Chinese Women National team dominate Team USA Women's currently?
Why is the current USA Women's National Team being coach by a former Chinese National Coach/Player?
so it must Communists training is better than democratic training?? at least in volleyball sense?
That is quite an accomplishment if indeed 8 people were truly accepted to Yale from Ganesha at any level. But considering that Yale doesn't offer athletic scholarships (No Ivy League school does), I am presuming these individuals were accepted based on academic performance more than the sheer coaching instruction at Ganesha High School.
In addition, I think there is a lot of talent out there to only be boasting Alenjandra Moreno. I am sure she is doing an outstanding job for Ganesha and the young lady has a lot to be proud of. However, smack talking on the blogs isn't going to get you respect. You have to give respect, to get respect.
Lastly, Maxpreps only reflects the standings from schools that report them. Diamond Bar, Ayala, and some other schools aren't reflected in overall stats. Obviously, this isn't the most accurate site. But if you are looking at this site, you will see Morgan Carty from Upland is #16 in Maxpreps. If you want to see sheer hitting power. As for tournaments, I would fundraise for bigger and better tournaments.
South Hills also lost to St. Lucy's right before the season began...
In my opinion South Hills can play very good at times. But I can't seem them hanging with the top seeds in CIF. Laguna, Corana Del Mar etc. They already lost earlier this year to Ayala who is in that division too.
the level of play fro both schools St Lucy's and Glendora was subpar
Please be real
not the best play from either team
SOUTH HILLS??
what are they're chances of cif this year??
[below]
if your talking about the 1 game to 25 at the ayala tournament
SL vs GLENDORA
your wrong.
the final score was 25-20
toomay didnt play once in that game
and it wasnt even a full match.
so where is your basis saying it was ugly?
Mayfield beat Walnut and I thought played Upland in the semis. I thought Los Osos and Ayala were in the other semi. Who was in the final and who won?
Final Upland against Mayfield
The guy who said Glendora got beat by St Lucy's in league play last week by luck needed to be at the Ayala Tournament to see St Lucy's win Glendora easily in a very ugly game
think again
also line up at Glendora was different than game at St Lucy's
Who won the Ayala tournament?
Great job Ganesha, keep fighting. Regarding the summer league. It means absolutely nothing. Rarely are any teams fielding their full squads. Club, summer vacations, other sports etc etc take players away. Dont judge a team by their summer performance.
Another thing-Ganesha doesn't get invited to most tourneys-we have to fight to find them. Our ASB also won't pay for any, so we have to fundraise. The Gabrielino tourney this weekend was a quality tourney with 40 teams, many of which are CIF bound. St. Paul will win league for the first time in 40 years and could beat most of our area teams. Of course, Ganesha's tourney had some strong teams and hopefully will continue to improve (Walnut, Gabrielino, St. Lucy's, Beckman). Obviously it takes time to gain respect, especially when the majority of our students are on free or reduced lunch! Still, we had 8 students accepted to Yale last year, so at least the Ivy League is paying attention to the quality instruction going on at Ganesha.
You people are funny. What you don't realize is none of the Ganesha girls have ever played club-many have only played a couple of years of organized sports. This is why the team people saw in the summer, which improved dramatically, would get destroyed by the current Ganesha team. St. Lucy's JV summer team was awesome, by the way. They played better than their Varsity team did earlier in the season and obviously their setter is still on Varsity. We have nothing negative to say about the programs in our area. Amanda Remy is an excellent athlete and leader, but the question was who hits the ball HARDER and the answer is still Uh-Oh Moreno!
are u kidding me, Brown and Remy are hands down better than that Ganesha girl
Ganesha did play somebody. They played St Lucy JV and lost in the championship match at the Bonita Summer League tourney. Bonita varsity coach just confirmed.
Once again Ganesha you didn't play anybody. If you would have been at the Ayala tournament you would have been destroyed. Congrats on the 2nd place finish but next year schedule some better tourneys.
Who hits the ball the hardest in our area? Remy? Brown? Nah-Alejandra Moreno from Ganesha, who blows there stats away on maxpreps. She has a cannon!
Ganesha is now 16-5! Rumour has it they stayed up all night, which is why they ran out of steam against St. Paul (a top notch team) in the Gabrielino tournament. Monday against San DImas can't come fast enough. CIF here we come!
In volleyball luck is always involved, but it's insulting to say that a quality team like St. Lucy's won on luck! We should be more supportive of all the teams in our area and notice that we are continuing to improve. The OC is starting to feel our heat.
Remy and Brown were originally CLUB WEST players. And then transferred to Impact.
Where was Glendora's setter in the 5th game?
what club do these players play travel ball? Remy and Brown? or Toomay from glendora and melissa cole from Walnut? I want my kids to play for those clubs.
It seems like the lineup for st lucy is the same when the ex coach was coaching during the glendora match. How far can a team go without a coach? That is the funniest comment...players coaching themselves. Glendora's setter was injured during the 1st game (she got a bloody lip when she was elbowed by her middle blocker), she came back in the 3rd game. Glendora should have won the match in 3 games. St Lucy got lucky.
Well as far as Remy and Brown go.....i think as far as pure natural athleticism.... Torri Brown!
Torrie Brown of DBHS
Amanda Remy of St. Lucy's
Who's better?
What's the comments about St. Lucy's Coach?
L.A. loses again
Ganesha beat Pomona 25-12, 25-14, 25-13. San Dimas lost to Covina in 3 and Ganesha in now tied for 1st with a 5-1 record (13-4 overall). Hmmm-two of Ganesha's players are getting recruited by D.1 and D.2 schools. If anyone saw them play today you would know why Ganesha has a shot at going far in CIF. We play San Dimas on Monday for the Championship!
St Lucy's
showing you who they are
beat Glendora without a volleyball coach
but with a lot of heart and that proved to be enough

Thanks for nothing Garcia
Well Curtis to tell you the truth, i havent really got a chance to see them play much myself...I do remember Park and Brown from last year.
Looks like its gonna be a barnburner!
Hey Patrick, you seem to follow DBHS volleyball. My daughter is Angela Branham #6. Starter or Reserve, any info. would be appreciated!!! Curtis
Hey Fred, DB Torrie Brown was awesome as a freshman when my older daughter was the setter for DBHS. Jaime Parke has been great since 7th grade. My younger daughter is #6 for DBHS. Any info, I have a restraining order and haven't seen her play in 3 years. Long story!!!! Thanks Fred, Sincerely, Curtis Branham
St. Lucy's P.E. teacher/softball coach is the fill-in coach. However, the captains of the team run the practices and schedule the lineups.
who is the new coach at st lucy and it looked like they have a new coaching staff? anyone famous?
Ayala beat Diamond Bar in five games, including 15-11 in the decider
Who won the Diamond Bar/Ayala game last night?
Hate to break it to you San Dimas and Ganesha have no shot at a CIF title in girls vbl. Good programs that are improving, but lets be realistic.
History,
In the last 5 years amat has CIF Championships in boys baseball, boys basketball, wrestling, girls basketball and girls track & field. You have to go back to '96 to add a football championship to that. There were a couple of seasons where they advanced quite far in girls softball and soccer, as well.
I was thinking about this for a while, which program is the most dominating? i know bishop has had a great womens BB, nview has a good wrestling team. but which one stands out? out of all the sports and schools in the area?
Anon,
Ashley lee was only about 5'9, 5'10 nd lead wilson 2 a cif title.
So anything is possible
I heard that Ganesha is the best volleyball team to ever be named after an Indian g-d?
So many teams are afraid of Ganesha because they have a good record but are unknown. Who is running that program and I heard the assistant coaches were D. 1 prospects at one time. Crazy! Still, the MiraMonte should win CIF.
Northview will come back. We had some illnesses, but we will be ready for the 2nd half of league!
No question Los Altos and Bonita (if not Ganesha or San Dimas) have a shot at the D. III title. If you want to make a list of the areas best players you should consider Alejandra Moreno from Ganesha who is in the top 20 in kills in the Southern Section according to MaxPreps. Oh, I know these stats are real. She also has an amzing jump serve and could be the starting setter, too bad she is 5'11". We can't wait for CIF at G-high!
Tonight, St. Lucy's beat Glendora in five. Looks like the race is on.
Fred, i would like to start the list by nominating Diamond Bar's Torrie Brown & Jamie Park..(both MB)
They do have a legit shot because there are not any huge powers in Div 3. Perhaps La Quinta or Brentwood but other than that its wide open.
Is Los Altos at South Hills this Thursday.
What are your thoughts ... does Los Altos and Bonita have a legitimate shot at winning the III-A crown?
I would also like to put together a list of the area's best players...any suggestions?
Not sure on how accurate info is but it was just rumored that Ayala beat DB in 4...but not sure.....official results yet to come...
Diamond Bar played Ayala tonight @ DB; no results yet
I don't understand how Ganesha is not in the circulation area when the SGVTribune is the main paper in the Chevron station next to the school. Ganesha is also almost at exactly the same east/west line as Bonita. I guess it's because all of the kids from Diamond Bar started going to Diamond Ranch?
what are the big games for this Thursday?
Fred, I ment to say rematch between them and San Dimas.
Fred, I hope that Ganesha can crack the Top Ten. NV has lost 3 in a row after losing to Covina yesterday. Ganesha beat NV last Thursday, record 12-4 and 4-1 in league. Sets up a great match between them and San Dimas.
Great game at LA yesterday. The Bonita team has some big time hitters and LA played tough. One Bonita parent said that weather they won or lost it was a great game and he had not seen that much diving and energy all year from any of the teams they played. LA keep playing hard and good things happen.
Mark your calander for 11/1/07. LA visits Bonita for the final game of the year, it should be a big one.
Steve R. does the poll, and this poll is published in the newspaper on Wednesday, which does not include Tuesday evening results.
Fred, Why cant you rate the teams based on today or yesterday, instead of last week?
