Volleyball Top 10

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TOP 10 RANKINGS
1. Los Altos (13-3) Team to beat in Miramonte
2. Walnut (9-2) South Hills tilt on Thursday
3. Bishop Amat (11-4) Gave Conqs a battle
4. Diamond Bar (8-5) Opens league vs. Ayala
5. Bonita (4-2) McCreery does it again
6. Glendora (4-3) Will challenge, St. Lucy’s, Ayala
7. Northview (6-0) Vikings continue to roll
8. South Hills (6-5) Huskies show their youth
9. Wilson (6-4) Starting to adjust to new coach
10. Gladstone (8-4) Solid opening in league
Note: Rankings and records are for matches played through Sept. 29
Comments: Bishop Amat makes its appearance in this week's rankings. The records here are the best to my knowledge and Amat coach Stephanie Cruz admitted to Fred that she had't updated the team's record, so that's why they were omitted last week. But I feel No. 3 is a very deserving rating, especially after they took No. 1 Los Altos to four games last week...Northview jumps into the top 10 after improving to 6-0 with a pair of nonleague wins last week. The Vikings replace San Dimas in the top 10. The Saints dropped out after being swept by Walnut...There are two big matches today. St. Lucy's and Ayala resume their Sierra League rivalry, while South Hills hosts Walnut in a battle of the top two teams in the San Antonio League. Both matches are scheduled for 5:15 p.m. starts.

yeah a stand in coach at SL because they bitched enought to get the real one fired.
take what your given.
dont use it as 100% reason to why your loosing.
SL with a win, in 4, against Diamond Bar...and with a stand-in coach.
boo hoo SL sucks this year.
get over it
boo hoo SL sucks this year.
get over it
when there is a coaching change like every 2 years at the same school there is really something wrong with that program just this year came one year too soon for another change and didnt parents made bogus complaints for not playing their kids when they are not that goodto begin with to get the coach fired then how is the parents had a little to do with the firing of the coach even the article below said the returner did not even made any impacts against ayala when the new players brought up to varsity were not even playing because of injuries who would want to coach at a program like this good luck finding a coach that had kiss up to parents can some one contact the reporter who wrote the article about if the players were really injuried or parents told them to act injuried
The Sierra League has always been able to field talented vb teams and it looks like this year even those schools that traditionally were lucky to get one or two wins are benefitting from better coaching and players with more years of club experience. Everyone expected this year to a little different what with last year's seniors being such a talented group. The SGV has girls playing at the college level all over the country, but most of these schools mentioned in previous posts still have lots of talent, heart, and strong traditions of winning in place. Ayala, Glendora and SL are used to battling it out for league title and there is no reason why this year should be any different. SL can still salvage the season and I'm putting my money on them to make a big comeback. The coaching change was necessary not just because of the poor decisions made, the drama, and their sad start. But that's the stuff that is fueling this blog's negative vibe. Hope SL comes back strong with the right players in the right positions and with the right coach making decisions that are for the good of the team. By the way, parents at SL have very little to do with what does or does not happen at Lucy's. It just doesn't work that way there.
Charter Oak vs. Los Altos
Bonita vs. Walnut.
This should clear up some of the drama.
Spoiled parents 1, Good coach 0
Great job on forcing your coach out.
But after reading the article written by Pete Marshall, it seemed like the St Lucy parents are calling Pete a liar. Maybe Pete saw a different game than what St. Lucy's parents saw, and he wrote the article based on facts that St Lucy parents don't even see. Those anonymous bloggers with inside information are most likely St. Lucy 's parents whose kids are not playing for various reason. Do they ever think their kids are not the complete package in volleyball? Maybe at first they need to blame someone 'the coach', but eventually they will have no one to blame and they will crash and burn in volleyball. It is also ashamed to see how those clubs are fueling on controversy in high school for parents money. Maybe, they need to get Pete Marshall fired for even writing this article that is not sided with all the lies in this blog. Then, again Pete is not a blinded writer.
Ayala steps up with three-game sweep
By Pete Marshall, Staff Writer
GLENDORA - Ayala girls volleyball coach Bernie Wendling told his team before Game 3 on Thursday that the Bulldogs had a chance to make a statement.
That statement was more like an exclamation point as Ayala swept St. Lucy's 30-28, 25-17, 25-15 in a Sierra League contest at St. Lucy's Priory.
"I think we got some lucky bounces," Wendling said. "But I liked our hustle, and when you hustle, good things will happen."
Last year, these teams tied for the Sierra League title, and the CIF-Southern Section Division II-AA poll indicated it could be a similar result this year, with Ayala ranked No. 5 and St. Lucy's No. 9 on Monday.
Fortunes have changed quickly since as Ayala (9-6 overall, 2-0 league) swept its first two matches, while St. Lucy's (5-7, 0-2) lost to Glendora in its league opener.
Ayala won the final two games convincingly, but the first game was a struggle.
The Regents held 21-15 and 23-20 leads, but watched Ayala rally for a 24-23 lead. St. Lucy's came back and had two game points at 26-25 and 27-26 before a double hit on the game's final point gave Ayala the Game 1 win.
"We missed a lot of serves in Game 1," Wendling said. "But I like how we battled back from two game points."
Ayala also had difficulty with St. Lucy's bigger servers such as Amanda Remy and Krysten McCaughey in Game 1, but had more success in the final two games.
In Game 2, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 19-11 lead and were able to coast to the win. In Game 3, St. Lucy's rallied from a 15-7 deficit to close to within 18-15, but Ayala closed out the match by scoring the final seven points, including the final six on Alyssa Raney's serve.
Ayala was led by Alyssa Swatek, who had 16 kills, and Alexandra Bozioian and Nalani St. Germain, who had nine apiece. Raney added 22 digs and four aces.
St. Lucy's and first-year coach Art Garcia were at a disadvantage with two of their middle blockers, sophomore Julia Ismail (shoulder) and freshman Megan Callen (elbow), out with injuries.
"We've got other middles, but we didn't practice not having those two (Ismail and Callen)," Garcia said.
And after the match, junior outside hitter Angela Kramer (team-high seven kills) told Garcia she had rolled her ankle.
With that in mind, Garcia said he liked what he saw Thursday.
"We have a very young team," he said. "We've got a lot of injuries. But we didn't give up. They wanted to know what they needed to do to get better."
Remy had 23 digs and three aces and Lauren Frazier added six blocks for the Regents.
Glendora and Ayala are overrated. Chino Hills spanked Glendora in 3 games, they should be in the top 10 in CIF poll. La Habra should be ranked higher than Ayala.
Fired for what? I cant believe what St.Lucy is promoting? Individual glory? shame on St Lucy...they let those parents dictate who should be playing ...applauses for Duarte administration for getting the football coach back ...Applauses for Chino Hills for firing their varsity coach for what it sounded like he purposely breaking CIF rule
There is no such thing as risking a coach career for coaching players that he knew full well is from his own school...there should be blame that goes toward the club director or who ever in charge of the coaches that is making the final say. Those money hungry owners are also the one that should be punish. Does anyone know what club this Chino Hills coach coached for? Someone should do an investigation on this club and shut it down.
OK St'lucy's fan and Tribune, just an FYI the coach has been fired. Now what do you do? Now tribune there's a story for you. St. lucy's will play Diamond Bar tomorrow. Check it out.

Here what I don't understand, I don't think the current St. Lucy's Varsity Vball team lacks talent. In fact if you recall last year the JV their JV team went undefeated. Most of the girls in the Varsity team this year was from last year's JV team. They have 3 returning seniors. I think in time St. Lucy's will come around and regain their title.
After reading these blogs, no wonder St. Lucy's is falling apart this season. The anonymous parent tipsters selling out their own team. I can't imagine what they are saying to their kids and how that translates back to the team.
I am not sure if this anonymous tipster saw the Ayala game. But as stated in the Daily Bulletin, (since we are looking at the facts) both the sophomore and the freshmen middle blockers were out due to *real* injuries. Which left the floor wide open for the *experienced* players to step up. Instead, they got worked and lost in a clean sweep. After that display of volleyball with the supposed experienced players, I think if I were the coach I would be looking for some fresh alternatives too.
OK here is the real scoop for the Chino Hills coach, he was a coaching a 17-A team for club, and the current coach for St. Lucy's was coaching another 17-B team. The 17-B team splits up and and half goes to one team and the other half goes to another. I mean what do you do. Do you abandone the girls or continue coaching them. The Chino Hills Coach had no choice but to risk his coaching career and continue to coach the girls that went on his team. I mean look at what he established at Chino Hills, most of the girls playing are playiong real volleyball. Half of the girls at Chino Hills does not play club. But they all play at a club level;. So go easy on the Coach.
The club that ex chino hills coach coached for should be shut down...how can they lied to parents and kids ...they have bad business practice
Another scandal involving club coach...what club did the ex chino hills coach coach for ?...cif office should be like ncaa and issue penalty to that club especially the club director and owner for such involvement with a minor and that club should be closed down for tarnishing chino hills high school name.
DONT BASH LOS ALTOS ALL THE GIRLS HAVE BEEN WORKING HARD YEAR ROUND FOR THIS SEASON....
the chino hills coach got caught coaching his club players!!
how come that got by for as long as it did?
HE KNOWS THATS NOT OKAY!
everyone knows thats against cif!
why would he still get the coaching job thinking he was going get by with that?
IT'S OBVIOUS.
there new coach is doing a might fine job though.
as for bonita
i agree that they are WAY overrated.
they have ONE good player.
all you have to do is shut her down and you have it.
everyone knows they have one player holding them together and without her they would be nothing.
not even top ten ranked.
"5. Bonita (4-2) McCreery does it again"
come on!!!
glendora is being underrated.
they have a good team this year and there being looked over.
i guess all will prevail by the end of league.
Walnut overrated?
South Hills beat them in 5
Is Northview going to win league?
What teams did they play so far?
why did last year St Lucy coach left? Maybe he knows this year's team is not as good?? So, why blame the current new coach for the lack of talents?
And why did last year Chino Hills coach left before the season? what was the reason there? and who is this new coach?
How good is Charter Oak? is Fred going to cover them when they play Los Altos?
San Dimas lost to a JV team can anyone confirm that?
Bonita still overrated and Los Altos still underrated? why is there no one questioning the CIF office about rankings?
So much dramas...so little answers
i think many people are going to be suprised this week when co playes los altos and bonita. co should definately be on the top 10. they beat wilson and wilson is still up there? does not make sense. with only 4 varsity returners, 2 seniors, one junior & sophmore, the rest are all new faces but suprising too. i think charter oak will suprise many people this week in how well they will play. good luck to them!
i think many people are going to be suprised this week when co playes los altos and bonita. co should definately be on the top 10. they beat wilson and wilson is still up there? does not make sense. with only 4 varsity returners, 2 seniors, one junior & sophmore, the rest are all new faces but suprising too. i think charter oak will suprise many people this week in how well they will play. good luck to them!
why is everybody freaking out about st. lucy's not being the best this year? maybe they're having an off year.. it does happen!!
coaches are coaches he cant change what the girls on the court are doing to get the points.
as for chino hills beating glendora in 3..
wait until you play them in there house
things will change.
chino hills is getting way too hot headed about one good win.
ayala's been getting good scores too but to me,
it seems like
ayala
glendora
st lucys
diamond bar
and chino hills
are all evenly matched.
it should be interesting in the sierra league this year.
Why is St Lucy get all the publicity??
Chino Hills got a bigger story and no one cares.
What happened to the Chino Hills coach last year?
How come no one is talking about what happened to him?? He was coaching summer? and then got suspended? and then got fired??
That would be a more interesting story to read then parents telling the coach how to coach. At St Lucy, parents always trying to run the show.
Btw, the new Chino Hills Varsity Coach is doing an amazing job but beating Glendora in 3-0. What is this new coach background? He should be coach of the week!! Fred, come cover our chino hills game and feature our new coach.
why does people with money always talk? cant people with money just be humble with their kids get a chance to play club. It does sounded that anonymous person do have a lot of time snooping around. Come down to Azusa and donate your time and educate us and help us get our kids to play club too. Sports should be a vehicle for love, peace and unity.
Wow, who is this Anonymous person knowing all these facts about current St Lucy status??
You must be a die hard St. Lucy fan. Who are you?? Reveal yourself...hahahha so mysterious!!
But you left out a few facts. their other starting outside is also hurt. how come you didnt mention that??
And what do you mean establishing themself in jv and club...that sounded corny...if those st lucy players are that good to begin with in club...they would have been selected on the USA Junior national team...and jv level establishment meant nothing on the Varsity level in high school sports.
Haha it sounded like another St Lucy die hard got too much time on their hand. Do you have time to come to San Dimas and find out what is the situation with our coaching over here. The san Dimas varsity lost to St Lucy JV during the summer league tournament and their JV team won a varsity tourney too with those players according to my neighbor whose kid is playing for St Lucy. As a die hard San dimas sports fan, I feel ashamed typing this but how did our Varsity team lose to a jv team. Maybe this person should snoop around our school practices and find out the history of our volleyball coaching staff. If whoever you are dont have time, it is okay because it is only a sport.
People wanting facts? Let me clarify some of the misnomers being stated about St. Lucy's;
1) All the girls do not actively play club. The current setter, that was brought up from JV, hasn't played club since 8th grade.
2) Yes, the current coach has previously coached at club and college. For those of you with curious minds you might want to find out why his last year club team had to be dissolved in the middle of the season. As for college, you might want to check out a "Pasadena City College" "sports in the news" article released 6/5/06 titled "Women's Volleyball Head Coach ------ Resigns". In the article it states that the team was coached to a record of 5-7 in 2003, 4-8 in 2004 and finally 2-10 in 2005 in the South Coast Conference, with an 11-25 overall record. At the end of the article it said they were looking for a new coach.
3) Middle blocker injuries. The middle blocker who supposedly hurt herself in soccer was actually a freshmen who was brought up from JV.
4) True the only "returning starter" is an outside hitter. However, the team has other returning Varsity players. It is difficult, for even experienced players, to succeed when the coach keeps bringing up inexperienced players and keeps passing over and/or benching the players who have already established themselves in past years on Varsity, JV and in Club.
5) The setter situation has been the biggest shock of all. Two setters who started out on Varsity, both played JV last year, were switched with the JV setter who has only two years of frosh/soff experience. I guess these kind of decisions would make him a better coach then the previous one who only won league the last two years and led the team to the CIF simifinals.
The best thing that could be done for the St. Lucy's team is for the coach to swallow his pride and start making decisions that are in the best interest of the whole team, even if that means admitting he made a mistake. Hopefully this would be done sooner than later for the sake of the season. Especially for the Seniors, this is their last chance.
Please look up the CIF rule book.... on scouting a contest.
#524- There will be NO restrictions on the part of member schools regarding the filming/video taping of any contest/interscholastic scrimmage. Host schools will maintain game management rights and responsibilities.
I think AMAT will suprise people this year and for the next few. They have a strong Varsity team with good senior leadership. Their JV team has some girls with height that should contribute to next year. (I believe the JV team is all sophmores.)
Go Lancers!
I dont think Chino Hills is considered in the SGV. If it was Ayala would be #1 in these rankings.
Fred,
Please take out Alyssa's comment for using the A$$
word or bleep it out. Please to all future bloggers, I beg of you to keep this blog clean. We are all educated people.
is glendora overrated already??
chino hills beat them 3-0...got to put them on the top 10
Los Altos is focusing on one "go to" hitter, but they have several other girls that can hit as hard and as good and are young sophmores and freshman. They will be a strong team for years to come.
drama at amat?
as far as i know.
nobody posting these is on the team so you dont know what goes on.
as far as los altos is concerned.
there OVERRATED.
one good setter.
one good hitter.
some tall ass middles.
thats it.
sooooo everyone can stop putting them on a pedestal they dont deserve.
amat has been in a rut the last couple of years.
and hey check the chart were #3!
We're covering a Northview on Tuesday against San Dimas, and also Walnut vs. Bonita.
Can someone cover Northview??
Players playing club doesnt mean they get good coaching...just go ask the Los Altos head coach about the lack of coaching that his players get from playing at certain clubs.
Which area sell more newspapers? Bonita should be first, Glendora should be 2nd, South hills 3rd
I love the comment the cancer is gone at Amat and there is no drama. Oh no not at Amat, heck they don't even get along!!!!! As for bashing, Amat will not do it on the blog they have been doing it from behind the scenes.
I would have to agree that volleyball is getting better in the area. Most of these ranked teams are fairly young. Los Altos tall middle is a freshman. Walnut's setter is a freshman. South Hills big hitter is a sophmore. St. Lucy's best hitter is a Jr. Diamond Bar and Glendora have young talent as well. More girls are playing club(at an earlier age)in the SGV.
Lets see how CO does against Los Altos.
I think the game of the week will be Bonita Vs. Walnut.
After talking to a few people, Los Altos did not bring out their "A" game against South Hills.
Los Altos has a few good hitters and decent setters. As for South Hills have One Go to player and two dinking machines. As Long as Los Altos controls the one good player and covers the setters dump they should beat South Hills a Second time.
good matches next week
Walnut @ Bonita Tues
Diamond Bar @ St. Lucy's Tues
CO @ Bonita Thurs
Ayala @ Glendora Thurs
Los Altos should have lost to South Hills a few days ago. They were lucky to win that one. Lets see what happens in a few weeks when they play at South Hills.
I agree, Gabrelino should be ranked. They have a solid team and a great coaching staff. One of the Best outside hitters around this year. Not as good as Lee or the Pasadena players but very solid.
Bishop Amat is solid, thier setter controls the tempo very well, and is one of the best defensive setters that i have seen in a while. As for dumping the ball, I think only uplands setters is better.
St. Lucy's - as stated before all the girls playing in their program have Club experience, they will come around. For those who dont know about the coach, he has coach for many years, including club and college. I think he might be better then the coach that left.
Charter Oak - What's up with them FILMING GAMES!!!!!! BOO FOR YOU --- READ THE CIF RULES ON THIS!!!!!!!!!YES YOU HAVE BEEN CAUGHT!! AND PICTURES HAVE BEEN TAKEN OF YOU WITH THE CAMERA! As for Charter Oak playing Against Wilson and West Covina - and beating them in 4, good for them. How have they done playing against ranked teams?
This week - Los Altos beat South Hills, but South Hills beat Walnut!
Ayala beat St. Lucy's - Ayala has a solid team with a very consistant setter. The outside player for St. Lucy's is looking very frustraded! They need to switch their setter back. For those who dont know they switched their Varsity and J.V. setters a few weeks back. The J.V. Setter is to slow speed of Varsity Volleyball.
Los Altos - Has its up and Downs - As long as the other players can hang with Esqueval, and maybe even step it up to her level of play, they should do well the rest of the season.
Diamond Ranch - Has decent athletes, how ever the coaching staff needs to fine tune their fundementals.
Another school to watch in the future (2 years or so), is La Puente, 70% of his girls are playing club and he is starting them since Junior High.
As for Ganesha - How did they do against Gabrelino?
Name some of the big matches you would like to see covered next week.
Amat has not updated max preps, Los Altos must really hate AMAT, volleyball, softball, football, baseball, chess, i do not know where all the hatred comes from... There has been no bashing of Los Altos on the volleyball blog and already Los Altos fans talking trash about AMAT, Los Altos looks good this year and i do not see them losing many matches and most likely a league champ, and there are no problems on Amat's team this year all the cancer has been radiated... St. Joseph on thursday come to AMAT to watch... GO Lady Lancers
My bad Amat is 2-5 on Max preps.
On Max Preps Amat is 2-6 without their tournament and yesterdays scores
Don't toot Amat's horn just yet. They played their best game of the year against Los Altos and Los Altos played down. If they played as they did against St. Lucy's than Amat doesn't get 10 points in either game. LA plays as a team with heart, Amat plays as individuals, for a Catholic school, a lot of hatred on the team.
If you watch LA they not only have talent but they truly love each other. It is a team with very good leadership and Coach DeLa Vara has raised his level of coaching to a new level which is taking these girls to another level. Keep it up.
I think you are overlooking South Hills a little. Thay should be moved up a few spots and St. Lucy's should still be in the top 10.
San Dimas and Ganesha square off today. In my opinion, and yes I'm biased (I'm the Ganesha coach), they are the two best teams in the Valle Vista league and both should definitely be in the top 10. San Dimas is defending co-champions and took Bonita to 5 games, while Ganesha is 9-3 and beat Pomona for the first time in 9 years (Pomona is three time defending league champions going 28-3 over the past 4 seasons). Ganesha beat Pomona in three games (25-17, 25-22, 25-12).
St Lucy lost two starting middles due to injuries all within one week. Who can really blame the coach when they got hurt outside of school...rumors said one of them was playing club soccer...according to a st lucy alumni that there was only one returning starter from last year and she is not a setter...can someone clearify which setter did they switch? Does any of them really have varsity experience? Look like St lucy is rebuilding anyway...why harass a new coach without the facts and reasoning?
People should harass the Cif office. How is Bonita still rank higher than Los Altos in the CIF ranking?? Los Altos parents will be protesting in front of the CIF office soon. Maybe fighting in the stand does help in the ranking system...
St. Lucy's lost to Glendora and then to Ayala. A lot of experience being wasted at St. Lucy's. What is up with th new coach throwing away his experienced Varsity setters and bring in an inexperienced setter that has never even played on JV's until this year?
Didnt CO lose to South Hills??
Someone needs to come out and cover a Charter Oak game! They're better than anyone even expected.
Fred-
Good to see you are keeping up with volleyball. Let me know when the Happy Holidays from West Covina decals are available.
St. Lucy's has lost to Walnut, Los Altos and Glendora but they did beat South Hills..
Where's Gabrielino? I personally think they are as good as Bonita.
Amat has a go to hitter in Senior Alyssa Ramirez, Junior Kelly Bonja is a stud as well as Monique Sena the setter, Amat has all the pieces to make a run at the league title and playoffs!!! Lets go Lancers!!!
Hope we continue to get more volleyball bloggers here. We're committed to a weekly thread, and this helps us keep tabs on what's happening at the games we can't attend.
Tonight we're covering Ayala-St. Lucy's.
Charter Oak did beat Wilson in 4 games, and I agree that Wilson does not belong in the Top 10. They're in a rebuilding year without Lee to lead them. CO is having their best season in years! With only 3 varsity returners and a strong new head coach, this program is turning around. Varsity newcomer Uchechi Anunkor (OH) is one to watch...11 kills in 4 vs. Wilson and 13 kills in 3 vs. West Covina. WATCH OUT...they have a tough schedule next week with Los Altos and Bonita, but CO might surprise everyone!
Bonita is ranked 3th in CIF but 5th SGV rankings, hmmmm..... it doesnt make sense!
1. Los Altos
2. Bonita
3. Diamond Bar
4. South Hills
5. St. Lucy's
6. Walnut
7. Bishop Amat
Diamond Bar - Very Solid
Bonita - Always SOLID
South Hills - If they only had one more middle and a taller outside hitter. South hills is the willson of last year, however Lee was more consitant hitting from the back row and a better passer.
Bishop Amat- Very good setter, great defense, but very little to no height. They need a go to hitter!
Wilson - without Lee, they are having major issues, however they should come around within the next 2 years (very young team).
St. Lucy's has alot of experience, the changing of the coaching staff along with the setter and middle changes caused a set back, however THEY WILL COME AROUND!
Los Alos - As long as their serve receive stays consistant they are automatic!
St. Lucy's should be somewhere between 5th and 8th in the rankings!
Dom,
Rankings are thru matches played Sept. 29. Results from this week will effect next week's ratings.
St. Lucy's I think beat South Hills and Wilson and is not in the top 10 either
charter oak beats wilson and wilson is still in the top 10...where's CO at?
