CIF Pairings released; Charter Oak/South Hills on opposite ends of Southwest; Glendora takes on Upland; Valle Vista gets tough draw in Northwest

| | Comments (153) |

I will be at the CIF pairings on Sunday at the offices in Los Alamitos. Hopefuly, I will have all your local pairings up Sunday night. But don't wait, CIF will release the bracket sheets from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and you can access them by clicking on this link.
www.cifss.org/landing_index

Southwest Division
Pairings/Top Seeds: 1. El Dorado, 2. Charter Oak, 3. Trabuco Hills, 4. South HIlls
Top Half: Rowland (3-7) at El Dorado (9-1); El Toro (5-5) at Bellflower (7-3); Bonita (6-4) at Foothill (8-2); La Mirada (4-6) at South Hills (8-2).
Bottom Half: Brea Olinda (5-5) at Trabuco Hills (9-1); Wilson 5-5) at Mayfair (7-3); West Covina (5-5) at Anaheim Canyon (8-2); Norwalk (5-5) at Charter Oak (8-1-1).
Fred's thoughts: Just what you expected with Charter Oak getting No. 2 and South Hills No. 4. Love the potential second round matchups of South Hills-Bonita or Charter Oak-West Covina, but when it all comes down to it, the top four seeds are legit and it should play out that way until the semifinals.
Final Four prediction: El Dorado, South Hills, Trabuco Hills, Charter Oak
Championship prediction: Charter Oak over El Dorado

Inland Division
Pairings/Top Seeds: 1. Corona Centennial, 2. Vista Murrieta, 3. Redlands East Valley, 4. A.B. Miller
Top Half: Carter (4-6) at Corona Centennial (9-1); Upland (7-3) at Glendora (8-2); Los Osos (8-2) at Chaparral (7-3); Damien (5-4-1) at A.B. Miller (9-1)
Bottom Half: Murrieta Valley (6-4) at Redlands East Valley (10-0); Ayala (7-3) at Norco (8-2); Corona Santiago (5-4) at Etiwanda (6-4); Yucaipa (7-3) at Vista Murrieta (10-0).
Fred's thoughts: The Sierra League has it tough across the board. Glendora opens with a difficult Upland team, and then could meet top-ranked Centennial in the quarterfinals. Damien has a tough opener against No. 4 A.B. Biller, and Ayala is on the road against Norco, an 8-2 team. Maybe Glendora gets past the first round, but don't expect any of the Sierra League teams to be playing the following week.
Final Four prediction: Corona Centennial, Los Osos, Redlands East Valley, Vista Murrieta
Championship prediction: Redlands East Valley over Los Osos

Mid-Valley Division
Pairings/Top Seeds: 1. Paraclete, 2. Santa Clara, 3. Blair, 4. Bishop Diego
Top Half: Sierra Vista (3-7) at Paraclete (10-0); Monrovia (5-5) at Cantwell Sacred Heart (7-3); Temple City (4-6) at La Puente (7-3); Mary Star (5-5) at Bishop Diego (8-2)
Bottom Half: Malibu (5-4) at Blair (8-1); Cerritos Valley Christian (5-5) at Duarte (8-2); Azusa (4-6) at La Salle (5-5); Village Christian (2-8) at Santa Clara (7-1-1)
Fred's thoughts: All these coaches at the pairings draw felt they had a good shot, and why not, it's wide open. I like the potential of Duarte and Blair meeting in the second round. And there's a great first-round game of Temple City at La Puente. I keep hearing that Monrovia, at 5-5, is the sleeper because of how well it played at the end of the year, but when all is settled, this is my final four prediction: Paraclete, Bishop Diego, Duarte, Santa Clara.
Final Four prediction: Paraclete, Bishop Diego, Duarte, La Salle
Championship prediction: Duarte over Paraclete

Northwest Division
Pairings/Top Seeds: 1. Morro Bay, 2. Serra, 3. Torrance, 4. Nordoff
Top Half: Northview (7-3) at Morro Bay (10-0); North Torrance (4-6) at St. Bernard (6-4); Compton Centennial (5-5) at Baldwin Park (7-3); Nipomo (5-5) at Nordoff (6-3-1).
Bottom Half: Harvard-Westlake (7-3) at Torrance (7-3); Santa Maria St. Joseph (7-3) at Oak Park (7-3); Oaks Christian (7-3) at San Dimas (9-1); Pioneer Valley (6-4) at Serra (9-1).
Fred's thoughts: Let's face it, the Valle Vista league took one on the chin. The CIF people basically felt this was the worst league in the division. How else do you explain Northview, at 7-3, having to face top-ranked Morro Bay in the first round. Or San Dimas, at 9-1, facing Oaks Christian, who defeated Diamond Ranch earlier this year and is still mighty tough even without Jimmy Clausen. Baldwin Park has a winnable draw facing Compton Centennial in their opener at home. But boy, after a three-way tie in the Valle Vista, winning that coin flip was important and the Braves got it.
Final Four prediction: Morro Bay, Nordoff, Oak Park, Oaks Christian
Championship prediction: Oaks Christian over Morro Bay

Southeast Division
Pairings/Top Seeds: 1. San Gabriel, 2. Westminster, 3. Fullerton, 4. California
Top Half: Santa Fe (5-5) at San Gabriel (8-2); Ocean View (7-3) at La Habra (9-0); Sonoro (5-4) at South El Monte (6-4); Santa Ana (5-5) at California (9-1).
Bottom Half: Arroyo (6-4) at Fullerton (6-3); Alhambra (7-3) at La Serna (7-3); Rosemead (7-3) at Schurr (6-4); El Rancho (5-5) at Westminster (7-3)
Fred's thoughts: What a whacky division, seriously, San Gabriel the No. 1 seed. And what do they get for their reward, a tough Santa Fe squad followed by possibly La Habra (in quarters), who I still think is the best in the division. South El Monte drew Sonora, and the Eagles are the wild-card after playing so well at the end of the year. I would love to see South El Monte play California in the quarters, that would be special. Arroyo has a tough task of opening at No. 3 Fullerton, and Rosemead is at defending champion Schurr. This was a crazy division last year, and figures to be again.
Final Four prediction: La Habra, California, Alhambra, Westminster
Championship prediction: La Habra over Alhambra

Stone breaker,
Charter Oak is much better than last year, I haven't seen Eldo play this year but what makes them better than last years team? The scores look similar to last years.

Stonebreaker said:

Last years Charter Oak team was better than this years Charter Oak team.

Last Years El Dorado team is not as good as this years El Dorado team.

figure it out. I don't know why all this talk and Charter Oak won;t even be able to get by Trabuco Hills and they haven't even gotten by Norwalk.

Steve Fryer doesn't appear real informed about the sgv,he probably doesn't get up this far north much, he probably has just seen the scores of some of our teams & makes his judgment from that, he obviosly has not seen Charter Oak if he thinks South Hills is the only threat to the OC schools. I think West co may suprise some people to.

By STEVE FRYER

First round: El Dorado over Rowland; El Toro over Bellflower; Foothill over Bonita of La Verne; South Hills of West Covina over La Mirada; Trabuco Hills over Brea Olinda; Mayfair of Lakewood over Hacienda Heights Wilson; Canyon over West Covina; Charter Oak of Covina over Norwalk.

Second round: El Dorado over El Toro; South Hills over Foothill; Trabuco Hills over Mayfair; Charter Oak over Canyon.

Semifinals: El Dorado over South Hills; Trabuco Hills over Charter Oak.

Final: El Dorado over Trabuco Hills.

Analysis: That El Dorado-Trabuco Hills final would match two excellent defenses. Canyon could be the best of the dark horses. South Hills is the best of the non-Orange County teams in this division.

I still say they are stupid and worthless. But some of these posters base everything on them. I believe what takes place on the field is evidence enough to gauge teams. Of course you have to take into account the occasional anomaly like trick plays and such.

If you really want to take in the feel of Morro Bay, make it a great trip by dining at the pirate-themed Flying Dutchman Restaurant overlooking the water with a great view of Morro Rock. I like the clam chowder and any of the seafood and chips dinners. Great sandwiches too.

Or, if you're really adventureous, stop at F. McClintocks Saloon in Arroyo Grande and get a double order of Turkey Nuts...no kidding.

Hi Anonymous

It’s about a 4 1/2 trip, by the time you make pit stops along the way.

Anderson's is a famous company for their spilt pea soup. They have a restaurant along the way.
Andersen's Pea Soup
376 Avenue of the Flags
Buellton, California 93427
(805) 688-5581 Fax (805) 686-5670

I don’t really like Pea Soup, but the Grandma’s were on our trip! So, you know who won that decision…

There are plenty of restaurants along the way, and some very close to the school. We ate along a service street road in a great Mexican restaurant. You could see the field from the restaurant strip. Not sure of the name, but it was busy!

Make it an adventure and enjoy the beauty! Awesome time!

Good luck to the Vikes and drive SAFE

SAINTS DAD.. thanks for the info. we were planning on leaving between 1-130. what time would you say we should be arriving? and as for Andersons, what kind of eating place is that? first time out that way, but have heard good things about the people and program over there. Just had no clue on where we should eat.
GO VALLE VISTA LEAGUE!! WE ARE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU!!

Hey Anonymous

Going to Morro Bay was a great trip last year. Prior to leaving, everyone assumed the worst, but actual it was an awesome trip. Long day but enjoyable being with family and friends. Just try to leave around 1pm to get thru the 101 traffic especially on a Friday afternoon. Then it’s a straight shot…

Great scenic route up the 101 coast. Stop off at Anderson’s if you like spilt pea soup!

Fans in Morro Bay are very good people, classy program. Football team is big and good, so I wish you the best of luck!

Enjoy your day and night under the lights.

Norwalk has two kids who both have over 1200 yds apiece. Their o-line is huge and they run a double wing all night long. They don't punt the ball except for quick kicks which has only happened once in four game films. They lost to Mayfair by two and that was on a last minute Missed fg by norwalk. Should co win, yes bit it's not the first round team a #2 wants.

WITH BACKS LIKE CRUZ AND BARRIENTOS CARRYING THE ROCK, GAINING THE POSITIVE YARDAGE THAT THEY DID, ITS NO WONDER DUARTE LOST. I WAS IN THE STANDS THE WEEK PRIOR AND WATCHED CRUTCHFIELD STUDY THE WARRIORS. IT DIDNT DO ANY GOOD. HARRIS HAD NO CHANCE OF PRODUCING ANYTHING BUT LATERAL YARDAGE. MOST OF THAT RUNNING BACK TO THE SIDELINE WITH HIS HEAD DOWN. THERE WAS NO ANSWER FOR WHAT HAPPEND THAT NIGHT EXCEPT TO SAY THAT THEY CAME TO PLAY THE BEST TEAM IN THE MONTVEIW LEAGUE. THE WARRIORS WILL BEAT TEMPLE CITY AND MAKE IT TO THE SEMI'S.

If vegas had a line on this game, my money would go on the TARTANS. They have good athletes but just don't play as well as past teams. If you pound out long drives on O and get to their QB I say you win by 14.

As you know I enjoy knocking heads with Tartan parents but this is on the field fact.

One last thing, your school still has not given CO the mayor's trophy, this is also fact that was spoken about today. You seem to be a stand up guy Plaid Lad, could you please look into this since you have the ear of some high up people over there. Thanks

- The Mayor Trophy was picked up at GHS by a CO Superentendit, while they dropped off the get well soon card to Brent Marteney... The card was in the trash 30 seconds later. So you, CO, do have it. And the trophy needs to be retired and get a new bigger one. Its a real lousy trophy. 2nd Grade science project awards are nicer. For this big of a game it should be huge! best of Luck to you CO. No doubt your good.

Upland is a good first round pick for us when considering they took 3rd in the Baseline league; the same league Etiwanda finished 1st in. The Tartans took care of Etiwanda very early in the season. Granted Etiwanda surely improved, but so did the Tartans.

We need to concentrate on Upland and Upland only at this time. Practice hard this week boys. We need to be running on all cylinders!

FANatic has left the Blog! BTW, good luck San Dimas. You have a tough opponent in Oaks Christian. You have to go into this game with a winners attitude - "Give me the ball, I'll take it for a touchdown"! You can and will succeed.

Interesting trivia fact.
The pricipal at Morro bay High School has a San Gabriel Valley connection. He is Pete Zotovich who was the offensive backfield coach at San Gabriel High School of the Mission Valley Leagues championship teams of the late 70's. Head Coach Randy Backus of Temple City was a memeber of those teams. Skip Herrington was the head coach at SGHS at that time.
Kind of like a Where are they now bit of trivia

You will be playing in Orange at Fred Kelly Stadium. Take the 57 S to 91 East to the 55 S and get off on Chapman its about a mile East of the Fwy.

The visitor side is all cement stands so bring some padding. The field is very nice.

PLAID-LAD!!hahahaahaha....San Dimas is not a very good team, sorry to say as nice as Coach Z is....Barbone is very talented but that defense is going to get dominated.Oaks Christian is lightyears ahead of San Dimas.Regardless of whether or not Clausen or Tyler or the rest have graduated, Oaks Christian will always beat San Dimas; guranteed.Who has SD even played this year that is worth anything at all?I mean seriously, they're a "cute" football team for the little protected division they are in but when they get out of that division, there is just no way they can compete with the likes of Oaks Christian/Morro Bay/Serra/Oak Park/etc...I think they'd even lose to North Torrance to be honest.

As far as Glendora, Wow.Going to be insanely tough to get out of the first round against a very talented Upland squad.Hope they come prepared.Home game definately should help some.

I'm an El Do dad and Alumni. I just enjoy HS football in the SGV.

I've seen both Canyon and West Co play. Canyon will eat up West Co's defense. If West Co can run like they did against South Hills then they might have a shot.

Canyon is a lot like South Hills. Josh Hawkins is a stud RB and Jordan Thomas is a very good QB.

I think Canyon wins but West Co does have a shot.

Just got done examining the rest of the CIF games. Some are..and some aren't a surprise.

The one game that stands-out in my mind is the San Dimas and Oak Christian game. Knowing all year just how good SD is I consider them to have the inside track on this one.

Coach Z will undoubtedly be prepared as well as SD's wing-t.

Oak Christian is not the same team as last year and by all evaluations has dropped off several notches with the graduation of certain athletes.

With SD's stingy O & D I'm pulling for them to establish SGV football in the Northwest Division.

FYI: There should be nothing "Saintly" about the way you guys need to play right now. Kick ass!

GHS vs Upland

Okay...by now we all are aware that we received Upland for our first CIF game. All things considered we should be fine with that selection. Upland is a great opponent any time of the year. In years past they were a regular on our schedule. But that was then and this is now. GHS has come a long way from kicking-rocks in the parking lot over the CIF playoff games. We have one week to prepare for what is sure to be a great competition over at Citrus. Everyone needs to stay focussed on this game and this game ONLY. We come ready like I know we will, and get past this first round there will be little in our path to crush our MOTIVATION & SPIRIT.

FYI: Stay positive throughout....it's time to show-case the "best of the best."

I agree that ElDo is a better team then last year. But are they beat-able?....I say, yes. Looking at who they have faced (including GHS) and who they will square-off with in the weeks to follow, will be interesting. Being a SGV homer my money is on CO. CO is not the same team as last year either. They display strong evidence of being more focussed and determined this year compared to last. With their current pedigree they should go deep in the play-off picture. Seeing ElDo three times this year, and CO twice, afforded me the opportunity to gauge what each team brings to the field. CO's (Snowden and company) should have no problems rounding the corners for big yards as CO's WR make light of what ElDo gives up in the flats defensively. ElDo will show a strong QB with time in the pocket to hit most of his targets. ElDo's running game is descent with a good looking RB that knows how to find the seams necessary to pick up yards when needed. If this sounds a little even....things will separate as CO's Special Teams and twitch-speed wins it...hands down. But before all of this football digest takes place...both have a heavy order to complete in CIF.

FYI: CO make it happen.

Guys, guys, guys.
The same things were said last year. Ive seen El Dorado play. They are even better than last year. The QB is 6'4 Jr that his dad played in the NFL. The starting defense only gave up 4 touchdowns all year. They shut-out Glendora and played back-ups the entire 2nd half. I was at Citrus to see the game and sat near Farrar and he says they are so much better than last year. If you have seen them feel free to comment otherwise be carefull cuz we all said the same things last year.

I think maybe you should rethink the Mid-Valley Div. Finals. Although Monrovia lost to Blair and Duarte, they have really come alive in the past 5 games, I think that if Blair or Monrovia play any of the Montview schools you may call it an upset. But I think that going by what I am seeing in the latter part of this season, its a whole new world in this division. Monrovia played it's rival Duarte with it's star running back out of the game and 5 first half turnovers and a new QB. At this point of the season the QB has thrown for over 1500 yrds and the running game is on track to sweep teams that cannot control not just one but two potential D1 running backs. Just a reminder not to sleep on the Wildcats or Blair for that matter. See you at the Finals

Charter Oak vs Trabuco Hills in the other

Both will be great games. Who-ever is healthiest will be there in the Finals.

We all know about El Dorado and the ED defense is even better this year. Checked them out last night vs Villa Park they are dominate holding VP. If you havent seen Trabuco play either your missing the boat. They are much better than last year and have alerady beaten South Hills. I know SH has made some changes but for SH to make the finals they need to be in the same bracket as TH. In a rematch I think Sh would win (the old saying its hard to beat the same team twice in a football season seems to hold true). El Dorado strength is what SH does. Charter Oak will have a tough time against Trabuco after last years game. Should be great games all around, heres to a all NON-OC southwest final. Id hate to go watch the game at OCC or Cal St Fullerton watching El Dorado vs Trabuco but it could EASILY happen.

Re: Southeast Division--so by now everyone must know that Troy had to forfeit their wins because of an illegal player and Fullerton and La Habra ended 4-0 in league. Fullerton didn't play LH due to the fires situation.

LH and Fullerton had to toss a coin on who would be the #1 seed . . . AND Fullerton won, so they are the # 1 seed out of the Freeway League.

AND even though LH has been the CIF # 1 seed the entire season, a # 2 team in league cannot be seeded # 1 in CIF. So California will be seeded #1 in CIF with LH being seeded #2.

This changes EVERYTHING in the Southeast division now!!
