dang, i guess i got you in trouble. us los altos and amat people are not aloud to talk i guess. i worked with mike for about 10 years but its been over 10 years since i saw him, and yes his brother jim was the qb at royal oak, played for mussack. middle to late 70's .

CORONA -- All the pregame hype about the Corona Centennial High School football team centered on Division I recruits Matt Scott and Ryan Bass and the Huskies' explosive offense.

But Centennial proved Friday night that they also can play some pretty good defense, and the Huskies proved it by overpowering visiting Glendora and scoring an impressive 49-7 victory in a CIF-SS Inland Division quarterfinal game.

Centennial, the division's top seed and ranked No. 20 in the country by USA Today, improved to 11-1 and advanced to face either Chaparral or A.B. Miller in next weekend's semifinals. Glendora, which enjoyed its best season in more than a decade, finished 9-3.

Scott and Bass, who have committed to the University of Arizona, were their expected selves in combining for more than 400 yards of total offense. But it was Centennial's dominance on defense that told the story for the Tartans.

Glendora, which averaged nearly 240 yards per game rushing through its previous 11 games, was limited to 95 on 34 carries. The Tartans' one-two punch of Jake Vega and Andre Holmes, who had combined for more than 1,600 yards on the ground going into Friday's encounter, were held to 46 and 28 yards, respectively.

"We had a hard time running the ball," Glendora coach Mark Pasquarella said. "We had a hard time blocking them. They have good players, and once we got on them, we couldn't stay on them.

"We get on them, and they'd get off of our guys in a hurry."

The Huskies, who got 186 yards rushing and four touchdowns from Bass, also wasted little time in getting started by driving 53 yards on their opening possession to take a 7-0 lead. The drive was set up when Pasquarella made the decision to onside the opening kickoff.

"We were going to try and see if we could steal another possession," he said. "(Glendora kicker Vince Lehigh) kicked it a little bit too far. It was just a gamble we took, but I'm not sure it had a big say in the game."

It did, however, give the Huskies a short field to operate on, and they quickly turned it to their advantage when Bass followed a 22-yard run by Scott with a 1-yard run up the middle for the 7-0 lead with 9:10 left in the first quarter.

Glendora almost answered back.

The Tartans, who did receive 161 yards passing from quarterback Drew Kaluzny, caught Centennial a bit by surprise with a short passing game. But Glendora's opening drive stalled when a Kaluzny pass on fourth-and-5 from the Centennial 13 was intercepted in the end zone by Kenneth Anderson.

"We caught them with a couple of things early," Pasquarella said. "But they adjusted and it wasn't there anymore. Early in the game we had trouble protecting (Kaluzny). We had people open, but we couldn't get it off because we couldn't block (Vontaze Burfict)."

The Tartans, who did force one turnover and stopped the Huskies on fourth down, did have their chances after trailing just 7-0 after the first quarter.

But Glendora couldn't take advantage of the play of its defense, and eventually Centennial were the Tartans down.

"I was happy with the way our defense played," Pasquarella said. "They actually gave us some chances early in the game."

See joe amat all you have now is your history of Amat football....what has amat done since playing Loyola at Cerritos college and losing that game. from there they have been non existant and will continue that trend...no one goes to amat to play football anymore. The glory days are over and by the way your rival St. Paul is in the semis as well and could very well win a championship...Amat is done

This younger bro that I speak of "transferred" to Royal Oak (which got absorbed into Charter Oak) just like Wells "transferred" to South Hills. So, in a way, by the transitive property of bloggerism... it is related to the subject at hand !:?)

I think that Mike Garcia had the unfortunate task of following John Sciarra who followed Pat Haden. Good QB, seemed like a really good, easy-going, fun-loving guy, but a tough couple of acts to follow. That was back in the day we stilled filled MSAC. Plaid Lad ...you played football where? Whatever school you went to , back in the day, what would you have thought if someone ..ie Dads ..carried a sign that said "Finish It!" (And "mugged" for the cameras!) Down right silly (at best) and pretty stupid (at worst).

That sign was offensive, stupid, childish and spells of POOR SPORTSMANSHIP! And here's one more tip for the Glendora Dads..let the wife's and girlfriends wear the players' (son's) Lettermen jackets!

That's the first and only time I've EVER seen that and unfortunately it won't be the last. There is one exception to the Lettermen jacket rule...grandpas and grandmas can wear then anytime!

Those debating GHS's loss to CC (both haters and Tartan fan's who are coach haters)...GET REAL! I had hopes that our boys could hang with CC. I think with a couple of breaks and inspired play, we could have. It just wasn't to be. But look at the facts man.

1. CC is #1 IN THE STATE and ranking is now #4 IN THE NATION (I guess beating us had a very good effect on their standing ;)

2. They play in perhaps the toughest league in our tough division. And how did they do against the 3 or league teams?

- vs. Corona 38-3 (they did not make playoffs)

- vs. Norco 43-7 That's last year's CIF champs, and 2nd place in league. They beat Ayala in the first round 27-7 before losing to REV last week.

- vs. Santiago 69-7 (ouch!) These guys qualified as our division's wild card team...and rightly so. They beat Etiwanda 52-35 in round won and then upset undefeated Vista Murrieta last week 32-24! They are STILL PLAYING!!

And CC dumped Carter 59-14 first round. We didn't do so bad when you look at THAT. It makes you realize just how right Coach P. was to be upset at the pairings. As a league champ we deserved to miss CC until round 3. We had a good chance of beating most any of the other teams left. But CC was clearly the better team (not just coaching). Those are the facts.

Hey football fans. Come out to the Charter Oak post game celebration at our house. We'll BBQ and have a full bar. Bring anything you want. PARTY!!!!!

Plaid LAD developed that sign after last season 'Finish It' originated when his son wanted to quit football last year. Plaid LAD ordered a dozen signs with his own money so that is why he's mad.

SEMHS is a good team with dedicated players and coaches. This year we had a special team as we did in 2005. We made some huge mistakes against Cal. We gave up 28 pts on four plays. Two on special teams and two on blown defensive assignments. Each touchdown pass went for 40+ yards. Cal might have put one or two legit drives. They were averaging over 250 yds a game. They had about 50 yards in the first half.

The score does not say it all...at all in this game. Erase a few mistakes and the Eagles are playing against La Habra.

About Urias, he is doing bigger and better things. To both parents and other critics. Unless you are on the field you will never know what kind of coach Urias is and what he does for football programs. I I say this loosely, that is an open ended statement.

One player does not make a team and neither does a coach. This is not about Urias but about the players at South. So, stop giving attention and credit to others.

Until players stop being recruited from the city's successful youth football program South will not win a CIF championship. Linemen win games on both sides of the ball. You need to have quality and size up front. Just ask Schurr. Nobody thought that they would win CIF last year nor that they would make it this far this year. However, look at their line. There you will find the reason as to why they make it so far.

Dude I better give it up cause there is no teaching the unknowledgeable... and if you can't play catch up with 5 yard outs, then how do you march down the field with screens, as CC did.

I am putting this baby to bed, believe what you want to believe, but talk to anyone that really knows football or athletes in general, they'll tell you that you can't make statements about one team being so much better than another if one side is not put into the position to show what they can really do.

I agree with you, he has moved on to bigger and better things. Coach Jerry Urias is a great person and deserves all the success in the world, he helped kids from all the school in El Monte that asked him for it, he did NOT care what school you came from, he would work with you and give it up his own time when ever possible. We wish him well, and support his efforts. Still wish we would have kept him at Arroyo, we had him and he got away !!!!!!!!

Someone should thank the Amat family for refusing Wells and allowing that transfer to South Hills. If not for Wells South Hills is nowhere to be found and is not in these Semis. WHAT A GIFT! MERRY CHRISTMAS

Congrat's to Coach Urias for moving on to bigger & better things... Rumor has it that Escamilla is steping down, and Coach Williams is leaving to FC Football staff.

SEM has a good staff with Coach Vizcarra( offensive coord.) and Coach Williams(Def. Coord.)It was because of these two coaches that SEM turned around there season!! Escamilla is good but these coaches make him better! I wish Urias well but Escamilla has the coaches to make a run next year!

South Hills has an excellent football program. Since 1964, they have had only 4 head football coaches in their history (43 years). Regardless of El Dorado's team size, speed, record, etc. SHHS will come to play, bringing with them a huge following. They will expect to win.

Monterible wanted him gone for personal reasons, but the funny thing is thats the best thing she could have done for him because he would have never left those kids. South El Monte had a great run, he is at a much much better position now, south is better than its ever been, he still helps them, and escamilla learn how to run a successful program (and will continue what he learned). Just let it go.

That's nice ! I'm sure he was sad, after all he knew his program was going to take a HIT, it must suck to loose your best coach PERIOD. My eyes are open, I know one of his (Escamilla) friends and that's how I know he had something to do with it. It's water under the bridge now, and Coach Urias has moved on and from what I have heard is doing really well, and us parents are very happy for him, he helped our boys and still looks out for them.

"Finish it"? Finish what?...I could see that banner in a Championship game or even a Semi-finals game but a quarter finals game?, that was so premature and down right stupid taking that sign over to CC Home turf. Maybe Glendora hopeful can re0use that banner at next seasons spring practice as a motivator? Or at least hang it over the Cheerleaders as they eat, those plump girls finish their meals as you can see.

What game were your watching? Nobody passed rush or closed on anybody in that game. You're guys got blow off the ball up front on both sides and that's not coaching! That's bigger, faster, stronger, better.

What was the GHS rushing yards? How many sacks on your QB? Your can't play catch up on 5-10 yard outs all night.

Urias Fan, I know for a fact that Escamilla didn't have anything to do with Urias being fired. I saw Escamilla that day he found out Montero fired Urias. He was so distraught. I've never seen him like that. This is a qoute straight from the HC's mouth that day. "How do I tell my best coach, and good friend, that he's(Urias) fired." He was so sad. You obviously don't know what you're talking about. My eyes are open. Are your's?

I know that Midget Montero fired Coach Urias, but I also Know Escamilla had something to do with it, open your eyes. If your around the program you can see that Escamilla was not pleased that Urias got all the credit, and he should get the credit, Coach Urias made SEM what the are today. You bet he had input, that's the kind of person he is, he wants the kids to win. Just ask the boys that have played for him what they think, and the ones on the team now. They will tell you the same thing, with him they would have won.

Urias Fan, First off, Escamilla didn't fire Urias. Montero did. Escamilla would never let go Urias. Urias was a great asset to the program, its a shame Motero let people from the around the district get in her ear. Second, That Semi-Final game our so proud of, South had 70 points dropped on them. Escamilla and his staff did a great job this year. They had a great run, but Cal is flat out a better team then South. With or without Urias, SEM goes down to the Cal Condors. The truth hurts, but you gotta face it.

CO beating CC? never happens, not even close, two different programs and much more talent on the CC side. Take it like a good sport and move on. SH and CO will be a tight games against TH and El-DO and it can swing either way for both of them. WC great season and you came to play and ended up on the short end. WC will bounce back ,very young and gifted team, they will be the SH / CO of next year. Is the bad news you're hearing regarding some "parental confrontations" that have occurred that ended negatively or something with administration. Or maybe one led to the other?!?

For those asking about the Charter Oak video, we never promised one. Our video man, Raul Roa, was on vacation for the Thanksgiving Holiday. We will have a Charter Oak highlights package of Friday's game against Trabuco Hills.

Regarding CC's definitive victory of Glendora. Why can't every other team who was beaten by more than 40 points by Corona make the same claims that the difference was simply coaching?

Winning requires both talent and coaching. Sometimes, great talent can win just by hiking the ball. Great coaching can do little if the opponent has overwhelming talent.

This years CC team would beat Glendora, and most other teams, 19 times out of 20 times, last Friday evening was not the one in 20.

Basketball time....YEA BABay! The Ranch is back in action and should be fighting for the top spot in da Val this year. Loaded all around and the big man Cunningham is better than eva. I'm sure Le Ducy will have Glendora primed and ready to roll again. They've got Dom who can shoot it and 2 nice guards Beckwith & Brothers back, but don't see much back inside. Will they run it this year with all those guards? The Ranch will run AND take it inside, so I'm likin the matchup. We need a Roundball thread here Fred. Jump Ball Time

Anony from Glendora who thinks our coach's had a bad game plan. I think we come close to CC athletically, but they clearly have more athletes and a bit better speed. The size difference just wasn't there. As for there not being many long plays given up by out D, don't you think that was BECAUSE we played off their WR's and gave them some space in the flats? Play up and we'd get beat deep 3 or 4 more times than the one time we did. I'm not saying it definately the best way to play it, but I do trust our coaches to know our personnel best. It got us that far. Did you really expect to beat the best team in the state? I did hope to see a closer game and with a couple of breaks here and there it would have been. Great season guys.

I accept your apology and for those of you Glendora fathers and Glendora fans that have been hateful and spiteful please take note on the exchanges between JFR and myself. Please let this be an example and a lesson to each of you that although we are very passionate and feel very strongly about our teams ultimately they are OUR teams and settling our differences and putting our differences aside we can find common ground and support the greater good for the many in our Valley. I hate that we aren't playing Friday night but I do love that on both nights I can go watch and support the last two local teams standing in the Valley. JFR the thought of Charter Oak every year being the heavyweight in our Valley just is difficult to accept because you make your annual trip to the Semifinals look so easy and I just wish every athlete had that experience just once especially my child. Ok... let me get this straight... they didn't match up... well if all the athletes that GHS "didn't have" was the real difference, don't you think there would have been more long plays... oh yea but there weren't. As anyone in coaching knows, adjustments are what win and lose games... in any sport any level. and matching up has a whole lot to do with the position you start the play in... hence DEFENSIVE STRATEGY. So in response to you yes the game would have been different had there been better coaching. Also, I seem to remember seeing CC players being run down if/when they broke, even their long pass play. Young closed from about fifteen yards to less than five by the time the kid got to the endzone. You tell me who had more "speed".
By the way, don't get all hurt because someone is pointing out your lack of football knowledge. And I never claimed to be Mr. Football, it's just easy to seem that way when debating with some people. So thank you for the compliment...

I remember that I thought it was strange that he went to Damien in the first place - he was obviously a Conq from the start. That was not meant to imply that Shaun was not accepted or a leader at all. I actually came across Felipe and Fernie and some of the other FB/baseball guys before their LA days. I was shocked as well. If I remember Gano made a comment at one time that Aguilar was the leader, heart & soul, MVP...and so on. I felt it was a bit of "coach speak" that was for the good of the team but might not have been his true feelings. Cody was getting all the pub and Felipe may have been the guy that the team looked to as the guy that was there from the beginning, while Shaun was a transfer? You'd know that better than I. Gano may have even awarded Aguilar the MVP at the banquet too. I think the Trib took that comment and ran with it by naming Felipe POY. Tough to contradict the coach and claim to know better. I dont care if Coach P was the best coach in HS football, adjustments in any form wouldn't have made the outcome different.

It was interesting to see how you could hear a pin drop in the GHS stands after half time.

Are you just dumb or do you not know how to read... Excuses are not being made, and coaches has a huge impact on the game. Man do you have any football savy, do you know what an athlete is when you see him? You are just making my point stronger... In games where the kids are matched well, it's all about coaching and how offenses and defenses line up. Adjustments need to be made. CC did it... Screens left and right... GHS coaches didn't. But wait... thats not a coaching issue is it... dumb ass. And CC sure wasn't bigger... they were faster, as I already explained to you. Sure their backers were good but their DB's Sucked and could have been abused all night... I know I know... you didn't see that right... not surprising with what you do and don't see. The fact is it would have been a much different game if GHS would have thrown the ball... Look at the MD v CC game... once again ADJUSTMENTS. Also, had GHS been playing their DB's on the line... 9yd screens don't happen which is what beat them... take a look at the game. Look man just becuase you played a back-up role at some do nothing HS doesn't mean you know football. Stop trying to act like you know the game...

I would like to see some attention given to the complete *student/athlete* that does not only excel, but also makes his teammates better and competes in a way that represents what high school sports is all about - on and off the field. I do know that many little future SGV athletes are out there playing and competing on the fields and courts and they look up to the athletes that they watch on Fridays. I remember playing Nerf football in the end zones of MSAC watching Haden, McKay do their thing in front of 10,000+ during the REAL glory days of Amat (before they became the amat of today) They were role models of the best kind. A future Rhodes Scholar, NFL players, laywers, nonetheless. It would be a shame for our youth to aspire to anything less and model any other behavior.

At amat we have the Pat Haden Award for the most outstanding two-sport student/athlete. To qualify a student/athlete must compete in two sports, be all-league in one and maintain a 3.5 with outstanding citizenship.

That is similar to NCAA Basketball's Wooden Award, named after one of the greatest coaches of all time, in any sport, states the following:


Candidate Criteria:

Candidates must be full-time students in an accredited NCAA college or university.

Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and aspirations.
All candidates must have a cumulative 2.00 grade point average since enrolling in their current university.

Candidates should be those who contribute to team effort.
Candidates must excel in both offense and defense.

Candidates should be considered on their performance over the course of the entire season (pre-conference, conference and tournament play).
AND

Candidates must exhibit strength of character, both on and off the court.

I covered the game and the officials made no difference. Centennial was just better. Pasquarella even told be that after the game. Game officials didn't prevent Glendora from running the ball. And when Glendora can't run, they are not going to win many games. I was amazed, though, how focal the side judge on the Glendora sideline was.
But what happened Friday shouldn't take away from what was Glendora's best season in 15 years

Great post PLAID LAD. That needed to be said, but I'm afraid that there is a segment of posters who are not interested in intelligent, civilized football discussion.

My heart goes out to the Tartan team. They had a great season and they carry great memories for the rest of their lives. Winning the Sierra League is no easy task. This senior class should hold their heads high.

I am really pumped about Charter Oak. They have a good test ahead and I hope that they are not thinking ahead to El Dorado. The Chargers are on a roll and I have high hopes.

Figured I'd read what I apparently missed the past few days. Funny how the blog bleeds from self inflicted wounds.

All of you SGV bloggers seem to implode whenever the thought of giving SUPPORT to a bordering program is needed.

Between GHS and CO the arguments continue to spin thread over borderlines and the September Trophy game, which CO WON!

From where I stand CO athletes, coaches, and fans, have alot to be grateful for as they prepare for this coming Friday's game. So, why in the hell would you all continue to pound the keys and occupy the gray-space of this site over senseless jabs that mean NOTHING to either programs?

CO fans you want success?...then help your team to concentrate and remain focussed on the mission at-hand by praising their accomplishment NOT comparing them with some program you have already played. (those points are PLAYED-OUT)

GHS and their supporters should put aside their pitch-forks and recognize that two very talented SGV teams are still in the hunt within the CIF running.

Do you all actually think that ORANGE COUNTY high school programs are messaging and bantering about how they hope that (SGV) CO and SH kicks-ass over (OC) Trabuca and ElDO? It seems a little far-fetched that they would not support their OWN programs coming down the stretch of the final weeks of competition.

So, where do we all stand in support of CO and SH? Well, just read all the dribbling post(s) below to answer that question.

Last season, all we heard is you guys saying that it was a once in a lifetime dream team, and El Dorado would be average in 2007. Snowden caught a bad case of lice from a teammate (many blamed QB Allen as they share 'do rags). So it was a personal hygene issue. The school nurse did the right thing and the Charter Oak coaches did all they could to save Kannans mane. Ben Counce told me a bag of Snowdens hair is actually pinned above the exit of the Charger locker room.

Coach names in the bucket for COY. While these guys had decent seasons, it won't happen - this is the year of either the Bogan/Wells or Farrar/Snowden tickets. End of story. Bloggers of the SGV, I'd love to get a ballot for BOY - I think it would be a go between amongst the ranked frontrunners: 1) JoeAmat, 2) JFR, 3) Benny Tone Deaf, 4) VANNER, 5) Plaid Lad.
I would be willing to bet these guys could run very successful teams themselves based on their displayed wealth of Football Knowledge. Sorry about the Jaybirds (a little too much, too late) it's all about WV now for sure. As far as HS Football goes, 3 more games guys, hang in there!

You make it very obvious that you have no football knowlege what so ever. How fast will you look if you you catch the ball at the line turn up field only to see that there is noone for 10 yds... Oh yea that's not speed and quickness, thats bad defensive alignment... which is conjured by dumb ass coaches. of course they looked fast, there was noone around them because there were no dbs up on the line with them. But hey I understand, when you run by yourself I bet you look pretty "quick and Fast" too.

They're not excuses man, and I'm not trying to change the outcome of the game... it just sucks that GHS boys were not able to look like the team they really are. They can hang with CC and I wouldn't put it past them to beat them. CC a better team I couldn't tell you... Do they have better coaching... ABSOULUTELY.

Football isn't boring. Basket ball in the SGV is a joke. There are a few individual players, but no real teams. The Tartans will live and die by Tiger-Cortes. He's a China Doll (fragile physically and mentally). Neutralize him and behind him there ain't much. Some tall worthless kids and some decent (hot and cold) short kids with no chance to play at the next level. Chino Hills will kill them and the rest of the Sierra League. But it's still football season, so drop the hoops talk for now.

I would tend to agree with some of your thoughts on the Poy/Coy award. It a tuff job trying to please everyone regarding the year end awards.

Personally I like a concept of making it a student/athlete concept which would make all athletes strive for success in the classroom as well as the playing field. The reality is, if you want to move on to the next level, the grades are a key role in making that happens!

Player’s stats are not the factor for me. Important yes, but when I look at the list, my vote goes to four players. Snowden, Wells, Barbone, Gilmore. They really have made a great impact on their school programs and contributed to the success of the team. If any of these kids were absent from their teams, how would the teams fair? I watched LA success in the first half go south due to some key injuries. It a hard question to answer given that this game is a team sport.

The coaches for me are Big Lou, Coach P, Bogan, Zernickow, Hernandez, Maggiore. All these guys are champions of their programs this year!

In any event, sure glad someone else is making these choices. All these coaches and players deserve SGV awards in my book!

SH will lose against El Dorado, their strengh is defense all they have to do is concentrate on SH favorite targets, Bradom and Dorian.
SH does not spread the offense much, they are predictable.

You just nailed down the BOY award with that one. I also wanted to let you know that you were right in talking about a rotation between the miramonte and san antonio leagues. Power rankings for both boy and girl success in sports determine the rotation. I believe that CO gets Walnut next year. I will never doubt your knowledge again except for the fact that the Tigers win over the Jayhawks.

Trivia for you, what star QB for South Hills won a cif championship in the 70's and went on to play for the Jayhawks.

Honestly, I am not as familiar with Charter Oak's football team as you would suspect but am more aware of the particulars that do present themselves in Los Altos and South Hills programs.

Both Gano and Bogan have always contended that they have never recruited but the program does meaning success breeds success. This is what upsets me though when I really feel these men and Charter Oak included you said so yourself play football at a very high level consistently every year and regardless if they have a few difference makers or not to continue to compete and win football games with that kind of standard and accountability is impressive for the amount of pressure and scrutiny their constantly under from critics like yourself.

I do appreciate and respect your compliments to Charter Oak's performance though because I wasn't at the game but someone told me their adjustments at halftime were outstanding and that's ultimately what wins football games is the combination between excellent athleticism AND excellent coaching!

My last point was unless you have met and had a conversation with these men personally to go and attack their character in my opinion is wrong because obviously they are doing something right to get their young men to compete and perform literally every week and most importantly win and go far into the playoffs every year. I doubt very highly men of such poor character could achieve such greatness without words like caring, honesty, loyalty, trustworthiness, and respect. Again just my opinion but I admire a healthy conversation on this blog for a change no matter what. Thanks!

Finally, South Hills truly believes they will beat El Dorado and that will not be an upset like many people think and also believe they will get a rematch game vs. either team in the Finals but don't think Charter Oak can get past Trabucco Hills and will win C.I.F. beating both O.C. teams handedly the next two weeks. I wouldn't bet against South Hills either though because their transfer is the last best transfer standing in the Valley and remember he never wanted to leave Bishop Amat in the first place but was left no choice but to shop his product after he was expelled from the school.

Appropriate since I'm sitting here eating BBQ and watching Kansas and former lancer linemen, Cesar & Jose Rodriguez play Missouri. They need to put some more points on the board pretty soon here.

I happen to think that winning coaches/players should be rewarded with COY/POY. It's a bit of an honor for the team to have the the COY/POY. Outstanding individuals like Timmy Gilmore will be rewarded with All-SGV honors for their tremendous season. the next two Fridays may decide the honors between Farrar/Snowden or Bogan/Wells. We'll see both players on Saturdays soon enough and the coaches are legendary. A Championship could earn my vote. If no one goes to the final Gilmore might sneak in as POY. He might have the best chance to carry the ball at the next level. In his feature photo, I remember thinking he sure looked good in the that USC replica uni. Unfortunately I don't get to see as many valley players now that they won't venture into Keifer stadium anymore. Hopefully that may change in the upcoming years.

In football, the Trib tends to go that way if an SGV Championship happens, but with Fred new to this side of the valley and Steve back running shotgun, past trends could be mute. Steve likes to reward the coaches who did something with the least. Two examples that pertain to amat would be back-to-back basketball seasons where one of our coaches won it and the next one didn't, both passing up coaches who did win championships. We had Walker win COY in a season that LeDuc won a CIF title with his least talented championship team then the next year Lokar wins a Championship at Amat and Hamlow is COY for improving a Rowland squad that was dismal the year before. In both instances, the Championship was not the deciding factor for Ste-Ram. My thinking is if someone wins it - they earned it. Or if Pasquy had knocked off CC it would have been a lock, in my eyes. CC was just too good. Welcome to our schedule !:) How'd you like that WEEK after WEEK?!? Mater Dei gives CC their only loss and OLu and Crespi beat them, with Hart in the semis and St Paul knocking off undefeated Culver City to stay alive. Great season for GHS, nonetheless. To do what Pasquy has done at 4 different SGV schools is impressive and *almost* puts him in the Farrar/Bogan/Gano conversation. But he's gotta get over the hump sometime soon. If no one wins a title they might even go to LP or BP for COY.

I'll reserve both votes for later...but that's my thinking at this time.

Please re-read my post. I don't have a problem with legit transfers. People who move into a new home, divorce, whatever, rightfully can transfer. But you and I both know that some of these schools benefit from "less than legit" type transfers. BTW, how is it that you are positive that everyone else has these guys but are "100%" sure that none are at CO. TALK ABOUT HYPOCRITE!

You are ignorant but consider that a compliment compared to if I called you stupid so you can banter about transfer this transfer that but please just do not attack these men's character because this conversation was already mentioned once and JFR wrote Big Lou's obituary and that really did make sense to some of us on how these men operate and do business.

Your examples of La Puente may be close but as far as Baldwin Park and West Covina both schools for a FACT had transfers playing for their schools this year and their coaches themselves welcomed them into the programs willingly so be careful who you point fingers at because I am almost positive four more are pointing back at you.

Charter Oak absolutely 100% is not winning because of any young men that have transferred into their program South Hills though does have Dorian Wells who is a difference maker and was at Bishop Amat last year.

Why even mentioned the information you discuss in the first place and try and make that point about transfers unless you are bitter or have a grudge for a particular reason because I guarantee you if your team had a transfer(s) on their team you wouldn't be whining and complaining like you are now HYPOCRITE!

You were bitchslapped all night last night. Time and again the CC players slapped at the GHS players facemasks (horrible officiating by the way) and did nothing! Those stud LBs came up empty in the shorts department. Isn't there a "supplement" for that!? Again the corners were the weakness in that defense. Up the line has been your undoing all season. As far as the offensive line. The ONLY player that even showed any guts and mean streak was #78. The boy is a man and the man is a stud! Every other lineman just took a personal man to man beat down. Coach P did a marvelous job with this team. And yes they could have beaten CC but ultimately it comes down to what do you do when you're down by 17...do you crawl up in a ball and say "Great season!" or do you risk everything and say "Man up!" I was disappointed in the players halftime body language. Talk about giving up. Too bad I really thought that "Finish it!" sign was going to do it for them but Plaid Lad was no where to be found, except second guessing the best coach his son has EVER had! Plaid Lad I'm just giving you the business because I found that sign offensive and a little look at me silliness but your boy is all stud as well. Without Jake that team on offense doesn't run. So congratulations to the Glendora Tartans. You were clearly the best team in the Sierra League. Unfortunately that's not saying much this year. QB K should be Sierra League MVP. He clearly was the "straw that stirred the drink". Great job.

Of course kids transfer! But amazingly, the ones who transfer to CO, LA, and SH are NEVER 5'6" and 145!

And BTW, transferring SHOULD mean moving! But that's not the case. Parents and coaches who'll "bend" the rules in order to put their kid on a winning team are missing the whole point of high school ball. Instead of whoring their kid or team so they can win more games, they should teach them to stay and make a difference where they are! AND coaches who benefit from this insanity should NEVER be considered "COY". Guys like the coach from LaPuente, WC, even Baldwin Park....those are REAL coaches. A coach with character, will not allow this type of thing to happen.

And... I don't care if "everybody is doing it"! It's wrong.

Name for me please schools that do not have transfers because EVERY school has kids from other school districts that is just a fact of life. This is 21st century high school football and ANY successful football program is going to have athletes move in from others places but I will agree with you Los Altos and South Hills are the exception because they have large big name numbers of players who are there to compete for their junior and or senior year. Charter Oak is an exaggeration of your imagination because if you check their rosters for the last three years those young men having been playing together for three years at the Varsity level.

I love how all these teams fans that lost are telling all the teams like CO that are PLAYING next week to enjoy their last week of practice.

Until "Big Lou", or any other coach wins a championship with only guys who actually live in his school district, he can't be COY! If you're honest, even for a minute, you'll acknowledge that CO is made up of key players who SHOULD be playing elsewhere. But then, that's the way it is every year! Same at LA, SH, etc.

I think El Do has a great shot at repeating. I've seen CO and South Hills play this year and they are tough but beatable. It all comes down to defense (ask Glendora) But, it is the playoffs and there are four league champions left so anything can happen.

It is very difficult to win back-to-back CIF championships but this years seniors don't want to end one game short. They liked the taste of winning last year and they have a chip on their shoulders because last years seniors got so much praise.

The next 2 games on both sides of the bracket will come down to turnovers and defense. I like our chances.

Funny thing is Mater Dei does have running game. They unleashed it when they destroyed Corona Centennial. Their running backs that dominated the Huskies in Week 5 were Robert Mojica (goes both ways) and Jaron Hytche. Ask the CC Defensive Coordinators, they'll remember. I am jsut real surprised that Crespi beat MD so badly. I watched Crespi beat Notre Dame Sherman Oaks for the the Serra League Championship and thought they were playing some really good football right now, I just didn't know they were playing this good.

Tell me Benny Tone Def, what do you tink about El Dorado's chances as repeat Champions?

Not looking forward to facing Tim Gilmore again next year. Kid is freaking ridiculous. Anyone who was at that game will tell you that considering the absolutely ass kicking the Wilson O-line was receiving, Gilmore should not have had 22yds, let alone 122!

South El Monte had a great season. They beat all odds that was against them. The boys had a great season and for us regular fans (season ticket holders) win or lose, our boys are the best. Congratulations to the boys, parents and the loyal fans.

No sour grapes (or gripes) here with the coaching staff. There's always a few things to question after a game (I'm sure Pasqy feels he might have done one or two things different). Bottom line, this staff took the good talent we had and made them into a very good football team that had a fantastic year. Losing to the now #1 team IN THE STATE (with Mater Dei losing) is nothing to be ashamed of. Looking at the program you can see the scores of other very good teams against CC and we stacked up pretty even. A couple of those teams are still playing in fact. Great year! Oh, and did someone say basketball is coming? Another chance for the Tartan Pride to carry the valley banner.

I think what really a shame is I will forever now remember you self imploding on this website and now there being the insinuation of lack of ethics and morals towards your program including coaches and players and then if that wasn’t bad enough even worse the implication of alcohol and drug abuse by minors. It was another fun year, great to watch you guys grow & improve over the course of the season, after the struggles you had early on it was nice to be able to watch you practice on Thanksgiving morning. You gave a good account of yourselves last night against a very good team, you took it to them for a good part of the game but in the 4th qtr they proved to be to strong. To the seniors, thank you for the years of hard work and dedication to your Team and school, you have a whole life ahead of you and I wish you well.
Juniors & sophmores you proved to yourselves that you can play well at the varsity level, keep the focus and you should have some good years ahead of you, next season starts in the next few weeks in the weight room & on the track, thats the dedication it takes for a successful season in the fall.

Charter Oak, Good luck vs Trabucco Hills, they will be a tough physical team and probably won't
make the key mistakes that our young boys made, keep your focus and I hope to see you in the finals.

South Hills, good showing vs Foothill, I really thought it was going to be a close game with them
but it sounds like you blew them out, take that momentum with you to Eldorado, cause you will need it, this next game will be your hardest test

I was at the El Do game, been to everyone for the last 4 years. In fact I’ve watched this group of seniors play every game since they were freshman. This group of seniors has only lost 4 games in their entire HS career and 2 were to Esperanza but it really doesn’t matter, it’s the playoffs and anybody can win.

I look for a similar game to El Do/Los Altos last year. It will come down to the team that has the better "D"

In the playoffs the team with the balanced offense and the best "D" wins. South Hills reminds me a lot of Canyon. Stud RB and solid QB and WR. It will come down to who wants it more.

It will be fun to watch. As for Mater Dei -- I've seen them in person and on TV and they are too one-dimensional. If the defense gets pressure on Barkley then they can be beat. Ask OLU and Crespi. Barkley is a beast though and he will be playing on Sundays

Trabuco's toughest opponent appears to be South Hills and maybe Gahr. T.H has improved quite a bit offensively since the South Hills game.

Trabuco lost to Laguna Hills who got bounced in the first round of CIF. They beat Gahr who is going to a Semi-Final in the Western Div. (D3)

They have a tough D and solid offense. It will be a close game. Basically I see the same type of game as last year. The team that turns the ball over more will lose.

I'll be at the CO/TH game Friday night. It will be the second time watching CO this year. I do know this. TH does not want to lose to you guys again so be prepared for a battle.

For what it's worth, you guy's calling for "Pasqy's" head to roll over last night you're just plain "dopey". Just stupid!

Was at the SH game. Sh was probably the better team. However, I have never seen a more garbage performance in the playoffs than Foothill. The majority of the turnovers were unforced errors. It was almost comical if it wasn't so sad. They looked like they hated their coaches, football, and being there. Absolutely no effort.

Please exuse our local fish wrap guys, they often make comments without doing their homework, but we still love them. After looking at T.H.'s schedule who would you say has been there toughest opponent?

Chargers good job last night! West co. showed alot of heart. But I believe C.O.'s depth took over later in the game. West co.'s 2-way studs were gassed in the second half. C.O. is going to have their hands full next week for sure. The blow-out wins are over. I see a dogfight coming friday (sorry Mike V.).

S.H. very impressive! Way to get it done. Good luck next week. El Do is very discipline, they dont beat themselves. They wait for you to make a mistake and then they HAMMER you!

All of you go eat some left over Thanksgiving food and be quiet. History has been made in some areas, and the other History is pending. Live with it and stop dogging out the other schools. Support you school in the wins and loses, but don't tear down Charter Oak High School or South Hills High School, those athletes and students are trying to enjoy this ride and it would be nice if the overall San Gabriel Valley community could support them. Just as your school finished strong, so will Charter Oak and South Hills.

Oh Fred! El Do was up 27 - 3 in the first half and El Toro wasn't going anywhere so the Hawks went to ball control (mostly because of the gail force winds). Even took 4 knees with 1:40 left in the game. at the El Toro 10 yard line. El Do doesn't play for the blow-out we play for the win especially during the playoffs. We are sure looking forward to playing another SGV team.

What game were you watching? Glendora was beat on both sides of the ball. There speed and quickness off the ball and CC ability to push your guys around was nothing but great.

Excuses won't change the outcome! They were just a very better team than Glendora. CIF needs to make some changes in the divisions this time around.

Is it just me or does it seem like South Hills and Trabuco Hills have played the easier teams in the bracket.
NO Doubt that CO and EL DO played the lower seeded teams but WC and El Toro were much better than every one had thought. It should fair well in the end,,CO is a very good and strong team, lets hope their fans can show a little more class, CO VS EL DO in the finals.

If South Hills gets by EL DO and thats a big IF they will not have the enuff to play with the likes CHARTER OAK or TRABUCO HILLS.

You are a smart kid.... show that and be silence. GHS football did all it could do this year and that's final. The GHS football should grow and learn from the experience, not go away kicking up unnecessary dust with the neighboring schools which as been the behavior in the past (and you are aware of that). GHS football has done all that it will do this year.

What a beautiful glorious day today is and here I am on this fantastic blog so early in the morning for me but I have had trouble sleeping since late last night because I just feel so full of life right now so I just walked outside and I could hear the birds chirping the clouds have parted and the sun is shining through but still there is something that just doesn't feel right about this morning like something is in the air and there is this almost eerie quiet stillness and no leaves are rustling why is there such a feeling of joy that warms my heart on the inside but a sadness at the same time setting in on today on the outside. someone told me that not once did the Tartan D practice against a 'no huddle' offense this past week. are you kidding us Pastqee? I say suspend Patsqee for insabortionation imeadiadly!!!

For all you who are talking crap about either the CC or GHS teams, obvioiusly you were either not at the game or don't know anything about football. CC didn't outclass GHS nor was their "speed" anything that GHS couldn't handle. The problem was that the Glendora coaches didn't put their boys in the position to stay in the game. Any time a team runs the same play over and over again just to the opposite side of the field, and the coaches don't make any sort of adjustments, you know there is a problem. Also, why, as a coach, would you stop going after a kid after he makes one of your biggest plays of the game and not go back to him? It just doesn't make any sense... from some of the players' themselves, "Coach told us that the best team won tonight. We tried to keep the ball away from the guys they were keying on." What is that? there is a reason they are keying on someone... BECAUSE THEY MAKE THINGS HAPPEN... why wouldn't you keep going to them. And what kind of moron coach tells his kids that another team is better... even if it's true, a coach should NEVER say that.

In conclusion, congrats to CC, but you didn't see the GHS that you should have. The coaches don't have faith in their boys, if they did, they would have let them play ... screen passes for 9 yds are pretty easy to get when coaches won't let his DB's play any closer then 10 yds from the line. And CC only had a couple of plays that went for over 15 yds... not an overly impressive amount for a HS game... so the theory of GHS not being able to handle their speed...BOGUS. It was easy to see that the game was so one sided because of a lousy job by the GHS coaching staff. On Def. no adjustments what so ever. on Offense, well, coaches should have kept with the plays that actually got positive yards, and no adjustments to blitzing.

GHS boys, keep your heads up. No matter what any of these people say, you where the one's who had the courage to go out there and play, and play hard you did, it's just a shame your coaches kept you from having a chance to show how good you really are.

Allright guys, we can debate without gettin' dirty. As for the game tonight and the boys I loved watching all season, you fought hard and went out like champs. I was proud...and a bit sad that we couldn't get the big breaks we needed. As coach Pasqy said, we would need to play nearly perfect to win the thing. He went for the onside kick to start the game. I thought that was a good move even though it didn't work. Centennial scored on a shorter field after the D started well on the series, but a huge run by Scott, breaking about 4 -5 tackles did them in. On the kickoff, CC's kicker did what he did MANY times (every time in fact) putting the kickoff into (often through) the endzone. Starting at the 20, our offense came out strong. A clock grinding drive with a mix of runs and passes got us down inside the 20. Drive stalled and we went for it on 4th rather than take the 3 (that one I may have done different, just to get on the board there, but...). Then the D really stepped up for a stretch. We held them on 3 of the nnext 4 series: first we put them in a 4 and long in our territory and DB knocked down the deep pass after the QB was chased out of the pocket. We also forced a fumble and force them to actually PUNT! Unfortunately our offense couldn't even get a first down on the those next few series and a bad punt late in the half put CC just 25 yards out, which they punched in for a 21-0 half-time lead. That was the opportunity to grab momentum. One good drive and score in that stretch and we use up too much clock for them to get the ball back and it's 14-7 at the half. Possibly a whole new ballgame with us getting the ball to start the second half. CC rolled from them and our D started running out of gas. The O finally started to get some drives going, scoring about halfway through the 4th (yes, it was on their 1st team as they clearly seemed to want the shutout). After that we played real solid against their 2nd team :) Seriously though, that is probably a more realistic matchup. That team is a loaded and they run an offense that is almost impossible to shut down. They are penalized a lot because they strive to start so quick and jump the snap as early as possible that they appear to be illegally in motion almost every play. The 2 backs are VERY quick and elusive and the blocking is solid...even the wideouts block downfield (not used in pass plays that much). The "no huddle" seemed to cost them some in terms of efficiency (a few bad plays/passes here and there) but the benefit is the large amount of pressure it keeps on the D trying to recover and read what's coming. Very fascinating to watch, if not painful and frustrating as a GHS fan. Anyway, looks like the old scoreboard will be pretty bare next week. Congrats and good luck to CO and SH. Next week the serious threats begin. Not a dis. to WC. You guys proved that you are no slouch, but these guys can really show us something by winning next week. Well, I may retire from here along with the FanMan...much to some of your pleasure. What will you do now? What will I do now? Thanks for the memories young men! A season to remember for sure. You have built a block on a strong future for this program. Next year should be good for this team and I predict that the '09 season may be even better than this one. Strong So. & Fr. class. But you Seniors were are great and talented group. Good luck to all in your futures.

Hey Brent Grow up! You're giving you teammates, fans and coaches a bad name!

CC was too much for GHS tonight. Their speed was awesome as they torched any possibilities to execute on O and D. Their Special Teams provided little room to operate on a short field. GHS 's O was three and out all night long. The one flaw (if any) that I saw in CC'S game was their ability to give up penalty yards, but GHS never came close to capitalizing on what they offered. No excuses here...they are a great team that should take it all in Div2.

Thanks to all for their support...I wish all SGV teams still in the hunt the very best as they fight on.

Thanks to Coach P and Styker and company for a year to remember.

The future for GHS looks so bright that the plaid crew will all wear sunglasses next year.

FYI: From time to time I'll monitor the gray space buzz....till then PLAID LAD has left the blog.

It's true Cal High set the tone early. 1st play of the game, kickoff returned for a TD.

One thing for sure is that Cal High has alot to prove if they have what it takes to beat La Habra, who murdered San Gabriel tonight (59-14). Honestly being a SEMHS alumni and fan, I would have chosen to lose to Cal High rather than face the onslaught that La Habra poses to its opponents.

SEMHS EAGLES - 3 years in a row, CIF playoffs; 2 out of those 3 ended with a share or sole possession of the Mission Valley League title. thank you!

I hate to be the one to give you a dose of reality, but tonight game wasn't about coaching.

CC had way to many atheltes on the field tonight and simply out played Glendora on both sides of the ball. You have to tip your hat to a better team and not blame the coaching staff. They took your team along way this year.

Quit making excuses and praise your team and coaches.

Some of you Bloggers from CO are Such D- -ks. It was a great game.. just ask your kids on the field . I think the CO coaching staff showed some class at the end of the game. your seniors are tough and their experienced show at the end of the game. I really think you can go all the way, Good luck againts a tough Trabuco Hills School..

Hey Big Reg that same little " bird " told me that C.O.'s defense is playing all 4 quarters this time, not two and a half. Also, that Snowden is not shutting it down at half time.

West Co. has a great running attack, but I believe that plays to the strength of C.O.'s defense. West Co.'s defense has allowed points all year against quality opponnents. If the Chargers play smart (these seniors know better) then I see a C.O. victory 35-17.
