Last Year Oaks Christian would kill any SGV team
but this year they are not even close to what they were the last two years. They could not even kill Diamond Ranch, nor Pasadena Muir when they played them this year. Like I said, Diamond Ranch was hurt vs Oaks C.and they were able to keep the game fairly close, yet they were healthy
vs Charter Oak and look what Charter Oak did to them the score was 48 to 7, if Charter Oak played Upland right now they would beat Upland too, Charter Oak is much better right now.
Its only natural that your impressed by Oaks C.
cause they beat your Saints but if your Saints played CO, or South Hills or Amat right now you would be just as impressed.

Everyone wants to make predictions about the games, who has beat who, who's better than who. The bottom line is the game won't be decided until the final second runs out. Upsets happen, teams that statistically shouldn't win do and the unimaginable can become reality. OC would kill Glendora, CO and South Hills. Nobody could kept up with that team speed on both sides of the ball.

Glendora got killed by El D, CO beat Glendora and CO lost to Upland. South Hills wouldn't match up either lsoing first two games of the year.

Damien wrestling?

I know they are all tough athletes who train to wrestle. That all football players should wrestle at LEAST one year before going up to Varsity. Helps with toughness, conditioning , balance and leverage not to mention work ethic, strenght and agility. But that's a issue for another time.

As far as anything else, I love the sport because there is no place to hide and no where to play favorites. Best man wins, smarter man wins, toughest guy wins, toughest guy wins...either way the outcome is in no doubt final.

Saints Poster at 5:04 pm , your team had a great season this year but Oaks Christian isn't even close to what they were last year, especially before Mark Tyler got hurt. There are a few teams in the sgv that would have a shot at beating Oaks Christian this year, Glendora, C.Oak, & South Hills would all be great games vs the Lions.
If I remember reading right, an injury riddled Diamond Ranch shut out Oaks C. in the second half
and made it a 21 to 34 game. If I again remember correctly, Charter Oak played a healthier D.Ranch
and blew out the Panthers 48 to 7. This was when there was a playoff at stake so D.Ranch had every reason in the world to be fired up & motivated.
You got a great coach over there, he made an 0 & 10 freshman team into 9 & 2 winners as seniors,
who knows what he might do in a few more years
at San Dimas, but as of this year your not at the level of the top SGV teams. If S.Dimas played someone like C.Oak or S.Hills, or Glendora you would most likely be just as impressed by those teams as this years Oaks Christian team.

Glendora/Charter Oak...GAME OVER!

Pasy has won a couple of big games with lessons he learned from Big Lou. Instead of being defiant and arrogant maybe the Glendora fans should just say..."Thank You." 'nuff said on that.

Now I'll be at the Glendora game and will finally get to see Attison go against some real talent. I put my money on big #78. What a great linemen. As usual, most people didn't see him coming.

Check back on my review of Glendora and see that this "tall red headed kid" stood out. Even if some Glendora bloggers said he was soft at the time. Seen Glendora play a few times and I think Glendora will find out what is really inside them. I know the staff is ready but will the players execute when they are down by 17 and have to get back on track. It will be fun to see the best LBs in the SGV deal with power backs rather than the scat backs in the SGV. Best of luck.

I gave 6 reviews (Amat, Glendora, San Dimas, West Covina, South Hills and Damien) All were right on point except SH's QB Deen. I thought he zeroed in on receivers too early but hey he's winning..and that's all that matters. I also thought the transfer So. QB Willison was better and should have enrolled at Damien (and Damien wins League and is still playing...in my opinion)but hey they play tough at St. Paul. In the end I think the kid made a mistake, but time will tell. Again best of luck, kid's got talent but I rememebr a kid transfered from St. Francis a few year's back and fell on his face at St. Paul...again JUST to play QB.

Lets' see. West Covina, South Hills,San Dimas. Glendora all got great reviews on their staffs, their players and their focus...and all did exceptional this year...even West Co. with all that youth (Great coaching staff) and Amat and Damien did as expected. Not enough talent, coaching or focus.

Maybe it's time for both private schools to take a long look at the direction they are going with their coaching staffs.

Finally: Congrats to Bishop Amat's Mr. Austin. You always believed in your son and now it's paid off. BIG PROPS to Dominique, Greater individual you will not find as a team mate.

I have a son who graduated last year and know Oaks pretty well given my son went to OC for four years. Lived in SD until work carried us to the valley.

Had an interest to come see this kid play and he is everything I have heard about. He is the biggest and strongest back you guys have but maybe not the fastest. Not many teams or players in the SGV valley would measure up with to the talent that Oaks recruits. I watched it over the last five years now. Last year we sent 11 guys to D1.

After the game, I said hello to some of the coaches from Oaks and they were very impressed with Barbone. One Quote “The kid just keeps coming and has an eye for the holes” Being honest, my observation was that Barbone and #33 ran with the most speed and authority.

As a suggestion, maybe you should go speak with the coaches and get it off your chest. Seems you have a little problem because the coach likes this kid. Not much not to like, given what I saw him do last Friday night against our tuff Lions!

Good luck next year, you guys played well and it was good to be back in San Dimas!

Barbone this, Barbone that... He's a great young man and a very good football player, but I was at the game Friday where Oaks Christian sent the Saints packing. Granted, Oaks is a private school that recruits its players, but Barbone was a very, very distant 2nd as far as running back went that night. The young man from Oaks Christian (a sophmore) was head and shoulders stronger than Barbone. Barbone will get a chance to play in some D-1's defensive backfield on Saturdays, but he is in no way a premium running back. He's a step to slow, twenty pounds too light, and an inch or two too short. That said, he is a special player with tremendous heart and fantastic potential. The Saints are nearly all returning next year and will absolutely dominate the Valle Vista league. However, the strength of the league itself is such that making it through the playoffs against teams like Oaks is next to imposible. One interesting aspect of Barbone that rarely gets mentioned, even on his own team he might only be the second best running back. Daniel Joseph (#6) is stronger and faster, he just doesn't have the favor of the coaches the way Barbone does. Either way, the Saints had a tremendous season and I couldn't be more proud of Coach Zernikow and his staff, not to mention the players. This is likely the best season in Saint history. I think Zernikow's commitment to foundational principles and the content of his own character are the beginning of a dynasty type situation in San Dimas. God Bless Coach Zernikow, Coach Johnson, Coach Kappen, and all the others who took a group of 0-10 freshmen three years ago, and made them into the best team they could be this year. Next year, even better! Rock on Saints!

a CO/Glendora rematch would end with Glendora winning. Fooled once, but not twice. Do you still think that was such a "big" win for CO? Maybe because it was against Glendora, but the game itself was no big win at all. Just like last year. Glendora's win was shallow last year and proved abvsolutely nothing. Just like CO's win this year.

Tartan fans have a habit of coming here and giving pep talks to their players. NEWS FLASH! These kids aren't reading your false bravado. The ones who aren't currently drunk or high are banging on the button wearer's daughters.

You are proud. Guess what, almost every other area team has been where you are recently. CO, South Hills, Amat, Damien, Covina, West Covina, etc. have all made it out of the first round in recent years. Big deal. That's all you have done.

It all ends friday versus a backfield like no one on your team has ever seen. If you waste your time trying to contain Ryan Bass, Matt Scott will take it to the house. Both are faster than anyone on your roster.

So come on down. Enjoy yourselves. Tailgate. Bring friends. Party. Because when the game ends, you won't be in a good mood and the drive home will be long and miserable.

Dinner Table thoughts,

It's tough to compare one year's team to another. May experience with older & younger siblings is that the older ones will never acknowledge that the younger ones (and their friends) are as good or better than they were at the same age. It's understandable. The Freshman always look smaller after you're older and High school kids look "so young" when you are in college. That said, this league is just as tough as the last few years, just different teams. GHS just happens to be the top team, so it makes everyone else look weaker. Is that because they are or because we've gotten better? Is the Baseline down this year too? or is GHS just the improved team and look to be the class of both leagues? Again, tough to say for sure, but you can't say anything other than they have done what it takes. I do know that the Inland Division looks to be a bit more of a challenge than the previous alignment. This team is blessed with a very good balance of talent on both sides of the ball, they have a lot of game experience (especially on the Defensive side of the ball) as well as a talented group of youngsters coming up who are getting more and more comfortable and & confident as the season advances (The Kluz, A. Holmes, Wally Gonzally, Stockham, Beck...)

See what you do, to illustrate my point, I have to indirectly say something negative about a kid that I like (Barbone), but let's be truthful, will Pete Carroll (arguably college football's best coach) go to see Gilmore or Barbone next year? I can answer that question for you...They are going to see Gilmore in a heartbeat over Barbone. Other thing, you mention Wilson etc...When you play Wilson, you know Gilmore is getting the ball, there's no other real threat...South Hills, Charter Oak, Los Altos, all throw the ball or have a pass package in place...It's what you do with what you got and Gilmore don't have as much as the other guys and sorry to say, I like the Valle Vista League better than the Miramonte, but the Miramonte is a better football league hands down. No rip on Baldwin Park, but they stuffed Barbone and they lost first round to Compton Centenial. Hmm, Gilmore in a landslide.

Just because a cities JAA team won a championship it does not mean that it will carry over to the high school level. Most of the traditional powerhouse JAA teams do not have the same results...see Pico Rivera Dons / El Rancho.

I have been living in the IE for over 25 years now and have witnessed the rise of IE football at the HS level. I will be hoping that Glendora can pull off what I consider would be a minor miracle against CC this week, but the hope would be based solely on my heart and not my head.

Good post! But, I will have to disagree with you. I have also been a long time Tartan fan (nearly 30 years)and I will admit, there has been great Tartan teams of the past (i.e. Karno 93'). This team, however, in my opinion, is one of the best "total" teams the Tartans have ever produced. Teams of the past have had individual super stars, as recently as Jordan Edmunds. And, yes, individuals can lead you to great success. But, you can remove any one or two players of your choice on this Tartan team and you still would have a winner. Try that with any of the leading teams today and see what you are left with!

I too was at the Hart game, my son played on that Tartan squad as well. Yes it was a battle. My opinion, this present Tartan team is more of a complete team.

One thing about the Tartans which has plagued the team for years is inconsistancy. The team can have an amazing performance, firing on all cylinders. This team can beat everyone. Then the same team can come out slow and lackadaisical, looking like a totally different group of kids. It's about "bringing it" to the game. The kids need to be psyched up to perform well.

As far as the Upland game goes, what happens within the game, is part of the game. Touchdowns called back due to penalities is part of the game. This happens on both sides. How about the pass interference which wasn't called. Certain Tartan touchdown.What if the penality was a holding call which prevented the defense from making a crucial tackle to prevent the touchdown?

We can't control how good other teams in the league are or are not. Teams have up years and down years. Damien may not have been the power house of last year, but Glendora stepped up to fill those shoes. Chino Hills didn't "light up" the lights as they have done previously, but Ayala certainly became a major contender and surprised many teams. So in response to your post re the SL isn't as strong as before. I differ with you there as well. The league was strong, just different teams this year. There has been an adjustment of powers.

Keep the faith! If Glendora "brings it" Friday night, we are going to see a real battle. I hope the headlines Saturday morning will surprise everyone. I heard CC is 13th in the nation. Pretty good team I would say!

As a long time Tartan fan to rank this team up there as a powerhouse with the teams of GHS the past is just ridiculous. If you are honest with yourself you have to look at the Sierra League as a whole and ask yourself is the league as strong as it has been in the past? For examples are the teams from Chino, Chino Hills, Ayala, and Damien on the same level as they were in the past, it’s not even close.
It’s not to take away anything from this year’s Tartans but the Sierra isn’t what it used to be. Is this team as strong as let’s say the team that played Hart two or three years ago? I know this is a bunch of what ifs but it may for some interesting conversation at the dinner table the other night. And what if that field goal was made by Upland and what if Upland didn’t have that touchdown called back. Then we would be home again.
What if, What if, What if, What if sure is fun speculating isn’t it? All I know is we are playing Friday and that hasn’t happen in a while. Win or lose it has been a heck of a ride...

It should be noted that he slip at the start. UCLA has been watching him since his freshman year in track and filed. This guy has one year left and is hands down the fastest guy in the valley this year.

IB is internationally recognized. Students from CO go to USC, UCLA, STANDFORD.

So what if a kid wants to go to Glendora instead of Charter Oak. Glendora has a better academic reputation. They have many A.P. classes and the universities like that. Charter Oak has the IBP porgram. Most prestigious universities won't accept those classes. It's a huge success if a CO kid gets into Cal Poly or CSU Fullerton. Although about half the Glendora kids end up at Citrus, many go on to Stanford, USC and the many campuses of the UC system. 95% of Charter Oak grads go to Citrus or Mt Sac.

I called it last week. Cal will fall to the Southmen. And yes, look out La Habra.

Gilmore runs a 4.3 ... i think hes got the speed

So what if a kid wants to go to Glendora instead of Charter Oak. Glendora has a better academic reputation. They have many A.P. classes and the universities like that. Charter Oak has the IBP porgram. Most prestigious universities won't accept those classes. It's a huge success if a CO kid gets into Cal Poly or CSU Fullerton. Although about half the Glendora kids end up at Citrus, many go on to Stanford, USC and the many campuses of the UC system. 95% of Charter Oak grads go to Citrus or Mt Sac.

Not sure of the specifics, but a student can go to ANY school that they want to that will accept them in the 9th grade and have immediate CIF eligibility REGARDLESS of where they live.

So if the GHS player mentioned entered in the 9th grade, it would NOT be considered a transfer. Now if another school was attended 1st then it would be a transfer, but that other school has not been mentioned.

If their is no transfer it sounds perfectly legit... and more power to them! That's what school choice is all about.

Happy Gilmore is a good runner BUT.....

To say he's better than Barbone, Mcbrige or Wells is a complete joke!

I have seen all these guys played in numerous games. McBrige and Barbone are complete studs and their speed/strength of how they run over, around and thru guys is nothing but pure ball out on every play.

Wells is a diffeent style of runner but has way better speed and moves than Gilmore!

Ask CO, DR, Bonita. They aren't to impressed.

Hell Snowden is ten times better than Gilmore and you'll see this kid carry his team to the title game!

You speak very passionately about your program and I compliment you for that. Others speak passionately about their program and they are scorned, ridiculed and even sometimes, stamped with the most hideous of all labels, the ominous "button wearer" (sorry mikey, I just had to).

JFR, no where in my post did I ever attack Coach F's integrity. On the contrary, I recall saying the team was very well coached. I do however beleive there are "rogue" players on the team with way to much testosterone. This was quite evident last time this subject came up on the blog. You may recall a CO player (or so he said he was)was asked why do you dive at the front of players knees full speed from five feet away and his response was how else is a smaller player going to tackle a larger player. He was presented with names of other small players from glendora who happen to lead the team in tackles without questionable hits.

The great thing about America is our freedom to express our opinions.

I will say, it was very deceiving and quite tacky for the CO fan to announce Marteney and the player in question have spoken, are good friends and Marteney had said the tackle was legal and legit. This was not true.

You say shame on me! The real shame is a very talented running back had is career ended prematurely due to what he believes himself to be a questionable hit.

This subject has run on way to long. I am very familar with your coaches great legacy and, believe me when I say, I do respect him for that.

Just because a cities JAA team won a championship it does not mean that it will carry over to the high school level. Most of the traditional powerhouse JAA teams do not have the same results...see Pico Rivera Dons / El Rancho.

As far a calling Glendora a "powerhouse" calm yourselves people!! I wouldn't go out and start making claims like that quite yet.

One thing I CAN tell you is that YES it is true, this years Glendora Team IS a DIRECT Reflection of a solid youth program in the City.

Glendora's Jr All American Jr Midgets (7th & 8th graders) just won the San Gabriel Valley Conference Title this afternoon at Arcadia HS. That team if it stays in tact, should be very, very competitive by their Jr Year.

Oh and an FYI... their #1 back is Glendora HS So. Tailback Holmes' Little Brother, Donovan. He is an absolute STUD!! (funny how great FAMILIES, usually have GREAT Kids!!!)

He is only one of quite a few young studs, how if they stick to it and develop will sure be a joy to watch in the upcoming years!!

Just to set the record straight. This is just my second post on this thread, and both times were to defend my name. Please do not buy into the bullsh*t the other CO Bro / CO Bros Dad is spewing.

Speaking of basketball, an interesting side note is that former Glendora basketball standout and asst. coach Josh Giles is the boys varsity basketball coach at Corona Centennial.

Glendora Powerhouse? More like PowderPuff. So you won a playoff game. I know this is something new to you all but get over it. You also were the only team who had to go to overtime to win. You were the only team who couldn't get it done in regulation. Upland? Please. They have an overhyped QB and a small scatback who gave your super defense fits. They are like a Pop Warner team compared to the Monsters you will see Friday. You all better get those basketball shoes out of the closet because after this week, it's all you have left to look forward to.

First of all, I graduated from Charter Oak in '96. My parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all went to Glendora or are still attending. I now live in the OC, but still root for and try to watch the SGV teams. I feel there are some ignorant bloggers on here from both sides of the Tartan/Charger debate. In my opinion, these are the two top football teams in the Valley this year, followed closely by South Hills, Damien, and West Covina. No disrespect to the other teams out there. Well, maybe Los Altos, but that's a given due to that rivalry. lol. To say that either GHS or COHS has not as much heart or support as the other is ludicrous. Both schools have excellent programs, players, coaches, and parents. Always enjoyed the games and can't wait til they do start them back up. Congrats to both on last weeks wins and good luck to both this week. CO, don't overlook those Bulldogs.

Two great SGV games this week: No. 2 Charter Oak (9-1-1) at West Covina (6-5)WC is turning it on right when they need to. CO's been great all year. Great rematch, my vote for game of the week

Foothill (9-2) vs. No. 4 South Hills (9-2) at Covina District Field Foothill has alot of momentum coming into this game and should give the Huskies a run for their money but I think Bogan will have something up his sleeve.

A man with 200+ wins, has been coaching football for literally now in his 4th decade, has been the head coach at the same school and only school he attended since his freshman year in high school, has competed in numerous championship football games and won more than several times, do you honestly contend that he would condone illegal tactics and techniques to be successful in high school athletics? Are you attacking his character and integrity for the game and the literally more than a thousand of the young men he has taught over so many years on the gridiron? He is a son, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, mentor, and friend to many walks of life that our own Valley has deemed a “legend”! The lives he has impacted and made a difference in is vast but for those of us that know him personally understand his nature, personality, and spirit. I promise you he would never and I repeat never compromise and risk harm or injury to any child that he has coached or competed against and just this Friday night he defended and then proceeded to protect his kids from the very argument you present. My point is no one felt worse than he did about Glendora’s injury and no one feels worse than he does that someone like you perception is reality and with that I invite you personally to come observe one of his practices because the tactics and techniques he educates at the beginning of every practice on Mondays and Tuesdays for his Special Teams and Defensive Circuits is phenomenal to study because what you will see is the essence of football in its purest form and the young men’s discipline and execution is so rewarding to see. I am serious! Tell me what day you want to go by practice and I will make sure I can be there too and we can watch practice together and then I will introduce you to the man because he and his staff are some of the best coaches better yet best men you could ever come in contact with and watch work with young people and he always welcome visitors like myself. Introduce yourself to man, have a conversation with him, confront him and ask/tell him exactly what you have written and then you may have the right to judge his principles but I assure you the level of his success for so many years is in direct relation to his standards for the game but more important in life and relationships so anything said otherwise is just pathetic and wrong! He is a man of ethics, morals, and values and his philosophy for the game and life has made Charter Oak football what they are today! Shame on him, shame on you!

I know that Pasqy is a big reason for your turnaround and also I think it's the fruit of a better youth program paying off. Am I right? Also, how is the basketball team going to be this year? I think it was 17-13 or so last year and that was a "bad" year for the Tartans. Maybe football will have some negative effect on basketball this year for a change. I know at CO that's an annual thing. I remember how BAD Duarte took it on the chin from you in the first game last year because several of their studs were still playing football. Does Le Duc have any boys he's waiting for? Usually 2 or 3. Good luck this week Tartans & Chargers as well as the other valley teams.

Gilmore and Barbone- Sorry, no offense to Barbone, but he's no Happy Gilmore. Gilmore is phenomenal. I hadn't seen him play til last few weeks and I was blown away. He singlehandedly has the team in the playoffs and now in the second round. He runs for 200 yards and returns crucial interceptions for touchdowns...Sorry to SD and Barbone, it's not a knock at all. Barbone is a gutty tough kid who any coach would like to have. Gilmore is a kid that every coach would be salivating to have. The strength and speed and dominant on both ends makes him the valley's best individual player. Imagine him on Charter Oak or South Hills, he'd be the most popular player in the SGV.
McBride from LA, Barbone, SH kid Wells, all second tier this year to Gilmore. Sorry, ask some coaches who saw all the kids play. They will tell you.

I hope all you idiots remember what this program used to stand for before Pasquerella.They were the pre-game theatrics to the basketball game basically.Everyone just wiped the floor with Glendora.Now, they are widely recognized as one of the top teams the SGV has to offer.This season they are arguably the best team in the valley.They have made the playoffs four straight years under Pasquerella.Also, add their first league title since '93 to that list as well as handling Damien 3 of the last 4 years.They are now a football and basketball powerhouse and don't expect that to change anytime soon with Pasquy's group at the helm.

sd insider.... co HAD to start scheduling D2 teams (damien, glendora, claremeont, D1 Bishop Amat, Inglewood for a year or 2, etc) about 10 years ago because no other like size schools in the area would schedule them anymore. Monrovia stepped up for a couple of years. But, SD, Don Lugo, Montclair, nogales, rowland, would not go their anymore.

Upland still needs to play Damien while CO holds their breath to see if they are out of the playoffs or have a shot at a cointoss to get in!

CO's 4 toughest games this year: Loss to Upland, tie with Damien, narrow win over Tartans and narrow win over Claremont (the doormat of the Inland Division). CO might struggle in the Sierra or the Baseline. Glendora is the Champ of both those leagues this year. 7-0 including wins over 2 of the 3 Tri-champs from Baseline which has no teams left standing.

Good luck this week CO, you should be OK. Next week you start to face again what we've been facing all year. Look forward to seeing you step up to that competition as we have on most nights. You helped make us better. Hoping we can make that next big step up this week. Should be interesting.

Did you thoroughly read my post?

Did I ever give reasons why Garkow left GHS for CO? That wasn't the point. READ ALL POSTS CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO RESPOND. We were having a debate re talent pools and easy access between GHS, DHS and COHS.

If I wanted to give reasons why Tyler left, I could have done that as I know Tyler and John (his father) well. Our son's played baseball together. The Garkows' felt, and legitimately so, Tyler was not getting enough playing time and had several differences with the coach. Tyler easily transfers to CO and the rest is history.

That was the point I was trying to make. Choices of schools in this area a talented player can make. With out a doubt, Garkows first choice of schools (Glendora) did not work for him, so, he went to his second choice (CO). Could have easily been visa-versa. The point again, kids can and do make choices in this very small community. Live in nearby, fill out some paperwork and you are on your way.

West Co will have to be at their best cause we all know Charter Oak will bring it.

BP lost to Diamond Bar at MSAC December of 84 in the finals. BP had some serious size but DB just had better skilled kids with speed. Good muddy game.

Where's all the BP fans? Feel sorry for the kids, your coaches let you down Friday night. Heggins and staff should be ashamed of themselves blowing the season the way they did. Too bad SD didn't get Compton, they'd be playing and representing the VVL still. Any doubt who the best team, best player, and best coach in that league is? I believe Baldwin Park (former Montview league team) won it all in the early 80's, if my memory serves me right.

Anyone have any clue why the Montview League is the weakest league in So Cal? Cultural, demographics, what is it?

It is what it is, Friday should be a good night regardless. The dogs have made progress since the last meeting, I watched the canyon game and they looked sharp. SGV matchup is a good thing.

Like I said I wasnt clear on the reasoning for not playing CO next year, when I was informed
of this they told me that WC was playing Glendora, Diamond Bar, & Los Altos, next season, then they told me that WC was not playing CO, but when they explained why, I was still thinking about our schedule with three teams they had just mentioned and so I missed why we were not playing CO, but I thought they said something about a turnover game, maybe I heard wrong.

As for the coaches, they are well aware of West Covina beating Charter Oak at the lower level's.
If it was me, knowing that WC will be pretty solid for the next couple of years, and knowing how Charter Oaks lower levels have been struggling, I would have definately rescheduled
Charter Oak, but the West Co coaches are better men than me & don't operate that way, they rescheduled Los Altos instead.

To everyone talking crap about SD. SD played and beat South El Monte (league champs) Bonita (#2 in league)northview, and covina. The offense played tough against Oaks. They scored more points than any team Oaks had beaten before. Stop talking trash about Barbone. He is the best back in the Valley. He proved it vs. Oaks and SD proved they are a darn good team. 27 points vs. Oaks is pretty good. Gilmore is good, but he isn't Barbone.

I would love to see Barbone run track. All the other good backs in the area do, we'll just have to see. A little competition on the track might quiet you guys down.

Check your facts before you start running your mouth about this kid. 200 + yards vs. Bonita and South El Monte. 170 + vs Covina and Northview. Only team to hold him was BP and look what happened to them. All that talent and they can't even call a play. Coach of the year my butt.

Thanks for getting where I was headed with that.

To JFRs point, it is not altogether out of the question that the coaches of the two leagues did not get together to "arrange" the bye weeks so that certain match-ups could take place. The problem that things like that typically cause is the "who-plays-who-and-in-what-order" controversy. However if they can set up certain match-ups (like WC-LA) then maybe it's possible that that is what happened behind closed doors (or over the phone).
That would at least be the "conspiracy theory".

And Annonymass(whichever one you are),
There was absolutely NO whining about our league at all. In fact we view the Parochial Area designation as a badge of honor that we want to keep and in no way would ever approve a move to the Mt San Antonio Area. The point being made was that Damien, a Parochial School) filed suit to avoid the Parochial assignment and stay with the local public schools, spoiling some CIF re-leaguing plans. Look it up!! Different strokes... but what you say about DHS administration might speak to that point. And as to your comments about coaching, while not seeing enough to agree with your personal assessment of the coaches mentioned, in general if anyone doesn't think coaches have anything to do with W's and L's... they haven't been watching the San Diego Chargers.

glendora, co and damien are the "exception to the rule" of d2 vs d6 (size of school).

fanatc is correct. damien shouldn't be included in the argument. they are a private school with no boundries. co has a rich history and, beleive it or not, very good talent does have a choice. garkow was a great example. there are others.

unlike most d6 programs, co can easily compete with d2 schools. a rich history and good coaching enables for them to attract excellent talent almost like a private school. we have already heard about the so called "transfers" to LA and SH. are we to beleive coach f doesn't do the same?

Damien and CO does pull talent which could also go to Glendora High School. To say otherwise, is overlooking the truth and facts.

Here's a name in the news lately, TYLER GARKOW. While he doesn't play football, he is a star pitcher for CO who attended GHS the year before. He did not move his residence, just the school of his choice. Very easy for those borderline residents to get transfers to either school. And, as we all know for a fact, very good talent from our pool chooses Damien every year to attend.

I stand by my statement, the lack of real football history is a disadvantage for Glendora in attracting talent from within our own pool when choices like Damien and CO are available nearby or within the city limits.

Quit worrying about CO and how you guys think you compare to them and start focusing your energy on CC. You're going to need a miracle to beat them!

When the "Mt San Antonio Area" releagues they have a set number of schools that are, essentially, in our region. All of those schools are in the releaguing process. amat is in the Parochial Area and thus are out of that rotation. How Damien remains in the Mt San Antonio area and not Parochial, is beyond me - but for another discussion when the season is over.

CIF would prefer an EVEN number of teams in each league, if at all possible, so that scheduling is easier. Finding a game in the middle of your league to fill your bye week is a difficult process. One of the reasons that the teams remain as they do in our area is that we have TWO leagues that have 5 teams in the league (which is and advantage - why later), the Miramonte and the San Antonio. Every school in both of those leagues fills that bye week, conveniently, with the team that has a bye in the other league. I'm sure that CO's opening is before league, and who knows how everyones weeks match up. Maybe you do. I'll tell you one thing - scheduling is a &!%@# of a task, and is never easy. Rarely do you get the teams you want in the oredr that you want. Sometimes it takes a bunch of contacts, ton of calls,some shuffling and pulling of favors to make things work. Another reason that having a respected coach that has been around the block and can "pull some favors" doing the scheduling (uh-oh...I feel myself going there..back on track Joe, back on track!)

Leagues with 5 rarely lobby for a 6th team if they have a convenient way to make the scheduling work, because it is an advantage come playoff time. CIF takes the top 3 teams from both a 5 or a 6 team league, so the math is easy. What would you rather have - 3 out of 5 or 3 out of 6. They only take 2 teams from a 4 team league (like the Serra) The Serra and the Del Rey league used to have 5 in each league (before the rise of OLu and the opening of JSerra) and had a similar "cross-leaguing" scheduling arrangement based on who had a bye that week.

Just read the article about Baldwin Park, who we all thought would win this game. Two back-to-back delay of game penalties in the final minute when going for two?? Get the play in coach!!! Looks like someone was in panic mode, and blew it for their team. Coach of the year, hahahaha....

Would it not be spectacular to see Glendora upset Corona?.

Dreams do come true for those that practice hard and keep the faith. If Glendora comes to play 110% and with their talent spread, they could beat any team, including CC.

Now that the pretenders in the Suburban league are gone its just the OC vs. the SGV in the Southwest Division.

1 left from the Century league (El Do)
2 left from the Miramonte (CO and Wilson)
2 left from th San Antonio (South Hils and West Co.
3 left from the Seaview (Trabuco, Foothill and El Toro)

Out of all of the teams the only team I haven't seen in person is Wilson and I hear Gilmore is the man.

Here's the deal. Defense wins playoff games and Trabuco and El Do have the best defenses in the division.

After Friday's games it will be El Do vs. South Hills and CO vs. Trabuco just how CIF planned it.

Some of these teams in the san gabriel valley who were in the playoffs now know what it is like to play with the big boys. If you have easy teams all years round and go into playoffs, how do you think they will do in playing with the big boys like,
Oaks Christian?

FAN atic says that Glendora loses kids to Charter Oak and Damien. No Glendora kid north of the 210 freeway (the school district border) plays for CO. One of your running backs (#11) lives in Charter Oaks (south of the 210) district but goes to Glendora because his mom teaches at Goddard. The Glendora kids at Damien wouldn't start for the Tartans. This includes Schmitz, who can't block kids half his size. FAN atic, your argument is weak!

Great job south el monte! What a season, and good coaching. Speaking of the great 05 team I just watched two of the top player from that team play last night in the bowl game (Lee Aguirre & Mondo Villa). They play for fullerton college who beat citrus college in the orange county bowl. Mondo looks teriffic at Left tackle, he has D-1 writen all over him. Lee had 1 int 6 tackles 1 bk up (earning bowl mvp honors) taking his season total to 7 ints 41 tackles 10 bk up 4 block kicks (wow). Great to see these guys at the next level making plays. Keep up the good work guys.

why do you co fans always take things out of context? Sierra may be the weaker league in the inland divison, but the inland divison is hands over heals stronger than the southwest divison. face it, charter oaks is a big fish in a small pond. the only competiton you have is el do. el do would lose to the inlands top 5 teams.

We teach them how to play Football and that is all. Life lessons are to be taught at home. Just remember we will be CIF Champs this year. Coach Lou knows it and has already booked a nice vacation after the Championship to Tijuana on the Charter Oak Unified School Districts tab. Champions baby. All the other programs envy us.

We will beat the West Covina Poodles even better than we did the first time. I know that Coach Maggiore personally called Coach Farrar to ask for Mercy. What kind of Coach does that you ask? A coach that cares enough about his kids to try and not get them embarassed.

Focus on Task at hand

You forgot to figure in the fact that some programs, based on football history and domination of league, tend to attract the cream of the crop in talent.

CO, by far, has a more impressive football history then Glendora. They both draw from the same talent pool due to proximity. Size of school in this case can't be used in an argument. The same situation is true with Damien. I know this to be true. I personnaly know a lot of talented football players living in Glendora choosing Damien and CO to attend because of the history of each program and the oppurtunity for scouting. Of course, after this season, thing may change.

But don't use size of school as some sort of advantage factor. Because in this case, the size of school has no merit and, could pose a disadvantage, when comparing Glendora with CO or Damien.

Being that this seems to be a never ending argument regarding renewing contracts and "dirty" playing on behalf of Charter Oak, I wanted to chime in re this. I know Glendora took alot of heat regarding not renewing the contract with CO, now it appears others might be doing the same thing.

First, after years of observing CO and after personally speaking with Tartan players, I have come to the conclusion that CO is a high spirited, extremely talent rich program and very well coached. Having said that, I also beleive the team plays with the intensity of a pit bull and is not adverse to making questionable tackles, blocks and other very physical contact techniques which can be construed as dangerous. Are these techniques legal? Absolutely. Will these techniques be addressed later as more and more kids become injured? Absolutely. JFR, my friend, please don't ask what techniques I, and others are referring to. This has been addressed and discussed many times earlier.

I know at Glendora, tackle and blocking drills are taught by the book. As many know from experience, Glendora players are well conditioned and very phyiscal. But, you will never here about Glendora making questionable blocks or tackles, with the exception being an occassional holding or clipping call. But that's it.

As more and more programs speak out about this, perhaps, new rules to protect the kids from certain injury will be discussed.

BTW, just to set the record straight, I don't remember who, but a CO blogger had said that Marteney (the Tartan player serverly injured at the CO game)had spoken with the CO player which caused his injury and the two are now friends. THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE LIE! I spoke with Marteney regarding this and he said he never spoke with the player, they are not friends and, he personally feels it was a "very" questionable hit. I speak only the facts. I am not here to make judgement.

Notwithstanding all the controversy, CO is a great and talented program and I wish them good luck in the playoffs.

Please bloggers, if you challenge me on these facts, feel free to post your arguments. But, don't come on here posting silly comments regarding one school is afraid to play another school. Remember, the kids have little to say about who they play and not play. The coaches decide whats best for the kids and program. And beleive me, these decisions are not made because teams are afraid to play one another. As I said before, I would love to see a rematch between Glendora and CO, so do the kids. You beat us this year, we beat you last year. Would be nice to have a grudge match.

While you make statements to support that GHS may be better than CO, one of the most important things you forget to mention is:

Does Glendora HS draw from a bigger talent base because of size of school?

Youre D2 not because of your record. Its determine by size of school and CIF sets it up for that reason. Are D2 schools expected to beat D6 schools.. YES!

Try to compare apples to apples before you continue to say Glendora is the best.

You guys just can't seem to let it go! CO won this year and Pasqy walked away from further competition with CO. Those are the facts!

You should be concerned with CC at this point and not CO.

i forgot how hard the sierra league was this year...they even said it for the inland division playoffs "sierra league is the weakest league" put charter oak in the sierra and i see them going undefeated..this was a down year for the sierra i mean come on ..ayala that went 0-10 was in the hunt for the title...Charter oak over glendora any day...like we proved this year already lol...just move on glendora god

Referring to your question....I believe that each pre-season holds certain opportunities for coaches and players to execute, hone, and experiment with certain possibilities while on the field of competition.

When GHS played CO, I believe it was the third game of the pre-season. Both teams were still in the process of ironing out "what worked and what did not." As the game developed both teams appeared evenly matched and in the end the experiment of certain executions proved to be the better of the two....which cornered CO a victory.

Now, if we fast forward eight games later to the present, both programs are still in the hunt. CO won their league (outright), as did GHS. Both teams are blessed with a pool of talent, as well as great coaching. Both programs have a fan and support base that are equal...and we are all proud of our programs accomplishments. I suppose in comparing each team position one would come pretty close in that comparison also.

So, maybe the real question has nothing to do with creating a "Kevin Bacon" phenomenon over who would beat who or whom.

Maybe the real question should be, "Where would both teams be if they were to swap leagues and schedules?" Could/would CO be in their same rated position of victory as they are today? Given all the tough teams GHS has squared-off against this year...would CO have completed the same results as did GHS?

Examining both programs schedules leads me to believe that GHS would have dominated the teams which CO played this year. Now, can CO say the same of GHS's schedule?

I truly believe that GHS would of handled Norwalk in the first round of the CIF....like CO did. The question is yours...Could CO have handled Upland in the first round of the CIF? We all know the first results of that competition.

At this point in the season, I think you would agree that the "present CO team" would have no problem handling the "CO team of week-three" and that is because you are sharper at your own game. ...as is Glendora.

This last week marked a mile-stone for GHS (in Div-2) for we beat an Upland program who badged a Baseline League (Tri-Champ)honor. This coming Friday we will mark another mile-stone for earning the right to compete against CC who badges a 13th ranked position in the "Nation" and top-seed in the Inland Section CIF rankings.

So, which team is better? Maybe no one needs to answer that question.

In every game between GHS until the DR game, Snowden never played a complete game. This was not due to the scores, it was because he was dinged the whole year and only played into the 2nd qtr if that most games.

Be happy GHS fan, snowden wasn't the only player hurt or dinged playing damien right after playing you guys. That war had casualties on both sides which unfortunately for CO, took its toll on the outcome of the damien game. So in reality tartans, you had a direct affect on the outcome of that horrible tie.

You ask for an answer to your open question and you got one. If you want to speak to plaid Lad personally, call him. Your not looking for an answer if you don't except the only way of logically discussing the issue. Every team has improved each game. You can not answer your question, except to compare common opponents.

If you want to except the fact that, without snowden, CO is is an average team who can't beat the #3 sierra league team, I will except that. Glendora is a complete team. Take any player away from Glendora and they will still win.

Charter Oak plays dirty, within legal limits, but they are dirty. Teams are dropping them from their schedules because
of this. Ask West Covina, Glendora and Diamond Ranch. When Coach Pasquarella said that the reason for dropping COak was because of a difference in philosophies the dirty play is what he was referring to.

I was letting you know that it wasn't a rotational move, they chose not to re-up the contract. CO is playing Rancho Cuc, DB and Pioneer next year and still have an opening on the schedule.

I guess some coaches didn't realize this is a senior team and the lower level's struggled all year, really struggled if you compare them to past years.

Now I have to correct myself. Found a link on maxpreps.com and looked at the 2005 schedule SEMHS had, and it's true, although we face Whittier (on the road) in the preseason (won 41-6), we DID face California High in the 1st round in a nail biter (won 19-15) and went on to Westminster (in the light rain, mind you) and beat them @ their home 38-28.

But it all stopped there, the winning that is. South Hills was our 3rd round opponent with the star running back Marquies Winbush (anyone remember him?) showing the SEMHS home crowd what South Hills was all about. Final score on that night 70-21, in favor of South Hills, who in turn, promptly beat Orange in the finals for the CIF-SS Div VII Championship Title.

Congrats to both Glendora and Charter Oak on their victories last night. Unfortunately, I had to drag myself out to Fontucky last night to watch the inevitable butt-whipping Miller laid on Damien. Poor tackling, dropped passes and no blocking undid any chance Damien had.

The only highlight was DeJon Miller hitting another 55 yard FG. The kid is amazing. All day today I saw college kickers who can't hit from 45 yards and this kid is hitting 50+ the last 2 years. Props to him, Ryan McMahon and Jake Veith. Near the end of the game when the Spartans had all but given up, these kids were still playing their hearts out.

I, instead, wanted to see Oaks Christian. It is not often a team of that caliber comes into the neighborhood. San Dimas, I was hoping for a miracle for you guys. You had a great season and you have alot to build on for next year.

Charter Oak, take it to West Covina next week. They are a better team than your last meeting, but you should still beat them. Down the road, ElDo has a revenge game coming to them. Good luck Chargers!

Glendora, what can I say? I am proud of you guys. The good news is that you will get a mention in the USA Today as the opponent for Centennial. These guys are big, strong and fast. Bass is amazing. Its real simple west co cant pass but can run the ball.CO can pass and run the ball. West CO cant defend againts the pass and cant tackle good running backs. I know I saw it with my own eyes at the home games (Ayala passed all over West Co and Rancho C ran all over them). Everyone saw how West Co tackles againts the run on TV (any doubts watch the SH game)CO shut down West Co who runs that stupid wing t a few weeks ago. CO shut down Norwalk who also runs that stupid wing t. They are playing West Co again who still runs that stupid wing t. Im a West Co fan and I hope our boys win that game but unless there has been a change in the off and def of West Co I know how this story is gong to end. West Co stay humble remember if you lose there is no next week so play your asses off. Maybe you can pull this win out

the leagues worked out it was briefly explained to me but I didn't quite comprehend it. Something about CO. being turnover or turnaround game, so instead of playing C.Oak we play Los Altos, but I'm not sure if this is all a done deal yet.
If you brought this up to suggest that WC didn't want any part of CO, that wouldn't make sense since the West Co. freshmen and JV teams both beat Charter Oak this year. West Co should be pretty solid the next two years.

Secondly, when Damien tied Charter Oak, Kanaan Snowden was not playing.

Thirdly, those comparisons you made as far as results against the same competition took place at different timmes of the year. Charter Oak played Upland at the beginning of the year and lost while Glendora beat Upland this past week. I honestly don't think that that is in no way, shape or form an accurate comparison. Every team - Upland, Charter Oak, Glendora, etc. - is a different team in Week 10 from what they were in Week 1.

So you need to come up with something more. The season is over for 99% of the teams.

It wasn't that Tucker was shut down, they didn't use him against SH., the Huskies were keying on him the whole night so he didn't get the ball much, he probably had less than 5 carries. Thats why Ricky Johnson had such a big night.

Anyways, where on this particular thread have I mentioned anything about South Hills, or how young our team is, I have in the past but not on this thread. But I do like that we are young.

Anyone else tired of seeing these private schools, who have unlimited access to the best players around, beat up on the public schools? It seems unfair to a public school kid, that he doesn't have a chance in hell of advancing in the playoffs, just because he can't afford to go to Oaks Christian, Mater Dei, etc. That game between SD and OC was a travesty against fair play. OC has 600 kids in school and 70 of them were suited up for the game. Their smallest lineman outweighed SD's biggest guy by 30 lbs. How can CIF justify keeping them in with the public schools.

Don't get me wrong. The public schools kicked the crap out of the privates in the all-star game. But when the private school has to play with only those kids who happen to live in their districts, it's just not fair. Of course, the public schools could go the CO, LA, SH route and let anyone who wants to, play for them. No matter where they live. CIF would never challenge those "legendary" coaches! Too bad for the coaches who play within the rules.

3 Missed Games...Duarte,Ayala,Mayfair all going down...(16-3)Pretty solid performance for the SGV, few surprise losses in Duarte going down as well as BP though it wasn't much of a shock there.

This next week will be a lot tougher for them...
It is conceivable that SH/Wilson/Glendora/SEM all go down so really going to have to reach back this week.SH should have a much tougher time this week with Foothill than most expect...Hopefully Glendora can create some magic..CO will likely roll...SEM is as hot as anyone and they could take that whole division but got to go one game at a time...Wilson facing arguably the best team in the division, IMO, so it would be a shock for them to come up with a win but you never know in the playoffs.

BITE ME DOG, you dropped CO, get it right. You talk a very large game for WC, I hope you represent the whole team.

Have seen a bunch of games to date this year all around So Cal...From the area teams that I have seen play, I'd have to say the best offensive player I've seen has been:
Kanaan Snowden in his performance against the Tartans.
Defensively:
Chad Young without a doubt..

The area teams I've been able to see is only:
Glendora
Bonita
San Dimas
Charter Oak
Damien

That being said having talked to players and looking at video, I'd have to say:
Bryce Muhamaad McBride was the consensus best offensive player in the tribune area..

All that taken into account, I have not seen Gilmore play but I've heard nothing but good about him...And McBride got hurt so he's out of the picture..

So, if I had to pick the best offensive player in the SGV, I would say Kanaan Snowden.

That said, it really depends what you're looking for.Flash?Give it to Gilmore or Wells.Grit?Give it to Nico.Performance?Give it to Snowden.

I think it really comes down to playoff performance.That said, Gilmore/Wells/Snowden all have their chance to seperate.

Since the Miramonte and the Sierra League both have 5 teams, the schools that have a bye each week play each other. Obviously that rotates so it seems as though that who you play each year is "the luck of the draw" and no one is either stepping up nor ducking anybody.

The line is ya I guess you can say "average". If he did have the line that dorian wells runs behind. He would have 300 yards easy. He is still getting his. 9.45 yards a carry. Cmon. He literaly carries the team on his back.

KNOCK-OUT (A TRUE STORY)

Several years ago while visiting Las Vegas with my wife, we found ourselves circling the barn outside one of the major casino parking lots. The temperture outside on the black-top had to be well into the 100+ range. The parking lot was packed with cars. From a short distance a car pulled out of a parking space. We saw a young man (25 yrs & 200+ lbs) quickly manuvered his car to occupy the open parking spot. As quickly as he move toward the open stall, another car pulled into the space and parked. The young man acting pissed-off parked behind the car and got out of his and approached the driver. The driver of that car stepped out only to be described as a 70 year thinly build man tipping in at about 150 lbs. Achieving size and age in every way, the younger man began to brow-beat the old guy as he yelled at his grill. With obvious anger, the young dude began to use his right pointing finger to pound his expression into the chest of the old man. In perfect control the old guy said out loud, that he was sorry about taking the parking space, and then asked the younger man to please discontinue the physical contact he was freely administrating to his chest. Of course, this request fell on deaf-ears as the younger fellow continued his angered superiority. Suddenly, from nowhere the old man was pushed beyond his limits and protected himself by blocking the physical contact and then greeting the younger chap with a two punch execution on his jaw. In perfect silence the young man fell backwards hitting the pavement completely unconscious....flat-lined. The old guy then apologized and simply walked away. As he left I said, "That was one hell of a punch you layed-out." The old guy replied, "I was once the USMC mid-weight Champ and it is obvious that no one should ever under estimate the human condition and their possibilities."

As real as this David and Golithe story remains to be....it might describe what GHS will experience this coming Friday against CC. The game may not be sold as the Thrilla-n-Minila, but to those that understand "who we are" and "what we are about," will bear witness to plenty of punch by GHS in their own defense.

FYI: Come early to secure your ringside seats.

No team in the valley can make it to the home depot center people. NOT CO, SH or GHS even if one of them runs the table, the loses are to damaging. If someone had only one loss to a long Beach Poly and it was close that would be a different story. If GHS pulled off three straight wins they would still not get chosen due to their loses.

Please consider the fact that the kids is running behind an "average at best" offensive line. So when he faces the likes of Charter Oak or DR, the OL can't compete, therefore he can't compete. You put him behind the OL of someone like South Hills who has a good size OL....kid would still go 200+/game. His numbers don't lie....you gonna tell me he wouldn't go off in any other league with a bigger OL? You gotta compare apples to apples.....

From what I'm hearing guys, CC is a team which if you can frustrate them they quit and it's easy for teams to get into their heads. But the trick is to get into their heads early. Then all their discipline walks right out that door.

But with that said I’m told we can’t make mistakes they are just to fast and too big.

I've made some calls to some of my coaching brethren and that's the consensus. But we will see won’t we.

Playing against Miramonte teams, yards are average or below average at best! Only good game was against LA which we all know was a team full of injuires.

Mayfair was a 300+ ranked team.. They suck!

I know that his bro (George Balderas) at amat had a nice senior year (after NEVER seeing the floor as a jr.) and came up BIG in the semis against a bunch of big guys from #1 Artesia in a mammoth upset, and had a bundle of blocks in the finals to win a ring.

If big bro (6'7") can upset a #1 seed no reason the little guy can't too! Maybe George should give a pep talk : )

I couldn’t agree with you guys more. I went to watch the SD/OC game. It was a real treat to see OC play in the SGV area. They are not ranked #91 in the state by accident.

And by the way, only one team was ranked higher than OC in the valley!

Nico Barbone has impressed me since he came onto the screen last year as a sophomore. This kid is legit no matters who he plays against and last night his performance in a losing cause was nothing more than impressive! This kid could differently play on Saturdays!

Smaller schools vs. private financial sectors are tuff to compete with! My daughter graduated from Amat last year, so I understand some of the things SD was up against last night!

The reality is what it is and this young man is a great football player and deserves credit for helping that team get where they were this year!

great win last night glendora, i must say i am a new beleiver in the tartans. i'm a covina fan and resident, but saw the game last night because i wanted to see the tartans play late in the season. i've been reading all the inspirational blogging and want the team to know, i will be pulling for you with your journey to beat corona and win cif. many people may say it will be impossible considering the strength of the inland divison. but i'm a beleiver in the power of commitment to your dream and faith in your beleiving it is possible. you and corona are only humans, anything can happen.

Went to the El Dorado v. Rowland game last night. El Do came out very flat and play calling was very conservative. It reminded me of SC, when you hold back on the playbook cause you don't want to show your next opponent what you have. The second half, El Do opened it up a bit and did what they had to do. El Do's defense is dominant and held Rowland to only 6 first downs all game. I watched South Hills and although they have talent, I really wonder if their defense can shut down El Dorado. Because El Do's defense will shut down South Hills. Looking forward to a 3rd round matchup between these two teams, but even with Rix on the sidelines, not sure if its gonna be enough for Deen and his boys.

Don't kid yourself, the Player of the Year for the SGV was just inked last night. As an OC football guy and watching the likes of El Dorado, Mater Dei, Servite, Esperanza and O Lu.... The best player i've seen all year...hands down....is Tim Gilmore from Wilson. That kid is the real deal and will no doubt play on Saturdays. What impresses me the most about him is his patience. He just doesn't take the ball and rams in the line, he waits for the play to develop and hits the hole that's open. And for a guy who is not very big, he absolute LOVES to run over guys. After watching Wilson play Rowland, Wilson had no business being in the playoffs much less beating Mayfair. The only reason both happened was because of Gilmore. What he did last night, the stats, the big play at the end of the game....that's just sick! Gilmore put the entire team on his shoulders last night and said "Come with me boys." No "up in the air"....the balloon was popped last night.

Glendora, if you beat CC next Friday you can beat any team in the Inland division. Use the El Do game as a motivator. You should have been much more competitive in that game.

This is the playoffs and anything can happen so go out there and beat CC next Friday. I guarantee you CC thinks you don't have a shot in hell.

Some of West Covina's bloggers may seem over confident but not the players, confident maybe but not overconfident. As for your statement that West Co didn't destroy anybody but just won, you weren't there. The score was close because of an intercepted pass and a called fumble by the ref that clearly was not a fumble, both of these killed two good West Co. drives, this kept Canyon close enough so that towards the end they could threaten a comeback but West Co stepped up & stopped them. The truth is that West Co. did physicaly destroy Canyon, they physically beat them down on both sides of the ball with big hits
on "D" and a line and running backs that pounded out the run game. Isaac Tucker is definately
up there as one of the best backs in the valley, picture Nico Barbone's physical style but with more cutting ability and speed. I only say this cause he doesn't get the recognition that others in the valley get.

Joe Amat - You nailed it on Edwards. You almost didn't need to even ask, you had it all correct. The brother has been at several games in fact. There has to be a special "all-purpose" award that Fred will have to come up with for this kid. He may not be the top receiver, or the top rusher, or the top passer, or the top DB on this great team, but he's been very effective in ALL of these areas. Also returns punts and holds for the kicker!

To me high school football is really about O & D lines. Who ever controls the line a scrimmage can put joe blow in the back field and win that game. Thats exacalty what happened to duarte last night. Valley christain RB Probaly didnt have 500 yards on the season, but they made him look like walter payton. We pretty much where man handled up front. im surprised chris had the yards he had. that team was not that good. But there line was killing are line on both side of the ball. thats way we lost. we need to get are line in the weight room this off season, so we want have these problems anymore.

Tell me this, do you know if Mikey Edwards has an older half-brother that played basketball at amat during the championship year of 2002. I seem to remember a real likeable step-dad whose last name was Edwards (I think) that lived in Glendora and their little guy would have been about 12 at the time -so the age is about right. He was always running around after games and looked like a good little athlete. Maybe a baseball player too? Would explain throwing the game-winning halfback pass vs Ayala, catching the game winner yesterday, etc...

Now go get Centennial. Last season in basketball they were the #1 seed and came to the SGV and got lucky to escape with a narrow (and controversial) win against Jon Joe and San Dimas.

What you say about Nico is the truest thing I've seen on this blog. I went to go watch Oaks, and they are every good as advertised. However, I really got caught up watching Nico in how hard that guy plays. You talk about leaving it out on the field, WOW!!!! Over 200 yards total, and 3 TDs against a serious powerhouse of a football team. If what you say is true, and he is not the League MVP, that would be an injustice to Nico, his team, THE LEAGUE, Valley, and Football.

i read these blogs and to all the teams that advanced great job cause it takes a lot of work, but i want you all to know and not forget about a team that had to possibly face one of the best teams in Southern California and give you a little insight. This Nico Barbone kid is unbelievable with how he played last night and if no one says it, it will simply go unforgotten. Oaks Christian played thier starters the whole game intermittingly giving them breaks around the end of the 4th quarter so no one can say Barbone played the scrubs, but he accounted for 3 TDs and rushed for over a tough ground and pound hundred plus yards and caught in an anemic passing game for a hundred plus yards also... he did this why also playing defense looking at a team that nearly doubled in size acrossed the board. this kid is legit and i dont know if the rumors are true the the kid from bp is league MVP and Valley MVP but you better check yourselves cause its a pure disappointment to see them ousted after having a fairly decent draw for the first round, and even you guys at tribune believed in them.

now get me when i say this that there is a lot of talent in the valley but when one kid is gameplanned against week in and week out he should be looked at as an MVP. and to finish this off he also had some beautiful punts for what it was worth... Great season Saints and i cant wait for next years possibilities and goodluck to the rest of the valley teams because us Saints arent angry with the draw just humbled by what we need to do for next year... have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone and an even better Holidays

Valle Vista League should not be in the Northwest Division with teams like Oaks Christian and Morro Bay (4 hrs. away). Not making excuses for the Valle Vista, just truthful, we don't belong in there with those guys...Sorry to say to the rest of the valley, maybe South Hills or C. Oak plays with Oaks Christian or Morro Bay, and that's it and a maybe.

season by all the teams in the league and pre season. What games have you seen? nothing was shakey sbout his game last night. He did what he was supposed to do, run the team. He made changes at the line of scrimage,and adjusted to the defence.No other Qb's in the league does this.

All I have to say is wow! I had my head buried because I just couldn’t watch. But wow! I thought I was going to vapor lock. Time to drop the “Pasqy Schottenheimer” moniker because the monkey is off his back. As you know all I have ever wanted was to get over the slump of “one and done’s”

As my ex-wife was saying to me in the overtime if “Pasqy” blows it you are going to be so pissed and go “Chernobyl”. But if he pulls this off you’re going to be saying like you WHAT THE HELL! Either way I just could not watch I was pacing behind the press box upstairs.

I am so proud of “The Kluz”. He sure has matured and really has come into his own and as you know I have had the utmost confidence in him since the beginning of the season.

As we were walking out one of the other players father walks up to me and said to me “Mikey that could have gone either way” and yes it could have but the kids and COACH pulled it off. Scoreboard Baby! And you can’t argue that.

As much as I shake my head at coach and some of the things that go down on that field I have to hand it to him last night he made me eat some of my words. I really am happy for those kids who have worked so hard for this over the past four years.

To that guy who noticed that I was the first to come to the blog and congratulate Coach P, I want to thank you for noticing that. I really am not the jerk some people here make me out to be. The old-timers know it’s not a personal thing it’s the football philosophy I have issues with coach.

MTC what do think of them-apples? Last night proved that coaching was the main issue of victory against a tough-n-ready Upland team.

Looking back over what took place this week made sense out of Coach P's contact with the CIF Officials regarding the play-off bracketing.

Coach P was right because we all knew that we where the best in the SL ending our season as Champs. He was also right about being better then anyone in the Foothill League. As of today, GHS is the ONLY team remaining from both leagues in the CIF run.

Coach P and Coach Styker called plays and made adjustments that I would have never called during a game like that.....In the end, they both shined and reaped the harvest of their vast coaching experiences.....and that is why they are called COACHES and I'm called a fan.

Your headline prior to the big game, with just a little adjustment "TALES OF COACH PASQY's BALL's STRIKES FEAR IN UPLAND FANS",was right on the money!

Coach P, you usually are not much of a gambling man, but last night's bet paid off with a OT victory which had the entire house in cardiac arrest! I can see in the eyes of the Upland players they came to win. This game ment as much to them as it did for us. Keep your heads up Highlanders! You truly played an awesome game.

Tartans, you made history twice in one week! Never have the Tartans won a D2 league title and never have the Tartans won a D2 CIF first round playoff game. Before all you history buffs jump all over me, our last CIF championship in 1993 was not D2, but a lower division.

I will not mention names, cause, as you know, the Tartans play as a team without any marquee conventional "top 10" players. Every Tartan player on the field contributes to the success of the team. And, last night was no exception!

Fred, thanks for a GREAT article, 4 photos, in todays Trib. Amazing how the stories and headlines change when the game is covered by a local reporter. You did a great job! Thanks for that!

Now were off to the second round, playing against the highest nationally ranked team ever in Tartan history. It's very fitting this honor would go to this special group of kids.

Good luck 07 Tartans in the second round. You will need all the luck in the world and every player playing their A game to beat CC. It's the challenge and opportunity of your lifetime to be in this game next week. If every player comes to the game with confidence and beleiving "Give me the ball, I'll take it for a touchdown" then we will play with the Tartan spirit which has brought us this far.

TIM GILMORE is the BEST high school football "player" in the valley. Not just at running back, not just at defensive back, but all around "player"

He has 12 touchdowns (2 of those were a 93 & 85yard interception returns for touchdowns) and at least 700 yds rushing in the last three games. AMAZING!

He plays running back, defensive back, and returns kicks but, most importantly, and I think has to be factored into the "player" category, is the fact that he is an awesome kid.
He is as humble and respectful of a kid as they come. A true team player and leader by his actions, not his words.

No disrespect to all the great players in the valley, but I think he is one of those "special" players.....GILMORE for valley Player of the Year.

It sucks, I don't know what i'm going to do on Fridays. Falcons you did good with all the stuff you had to deal with this year. Put your head up. Next year might be better.

I just woke up and was dreaming that after our win last night we get to play Charter Oak this week. Wow, dreams really do come true we get to play the Chargers again and you know what they say about playing teams twice in one year. I am going to go back to bed now and dream about the game being won in the 4th quarter. Now I am really dreaming because this game will be decided long before then since C.O. is going to be tapping out early and often from our biting you with big hits. We will not let up on you boys so be prepared to say uncle. Good night for now and really there is nothing to be afraid of unless you close your eyes because when you open them we're going to be in your face!

Man, who is the D-Coordinator at Arroyo? Did he decide that he was only going to put 9 guys out on defense or something? Maybe they should consider demoting him (back) to special teams or something. Way to go South El Monte Eagles!
We started 0-4 (losses to San Dimas, Pioneer, Whittier, & Corona Del Mar) and then beat Alhambra [who was heavily favored considering they were undefeated up until that point] to finish the pre-season.

What happens next is beyond me, being a fan since I was a freshman in 1995/96. We beat Rosemead (20-14), beat Gabrielino (18-7), beat Arroyo (40-19), beat Mountain View (41-0), beat El Monte (52-0). But apparently we were not done. We beat Sonora (54-7).

So if you are keeping up that's 7 STRAIGHT WINS (last preseason game, all league games, and 1st playoff game), not to mention tonight's game was the 4th straight game scoring 40 points or more and the 3rd straight game where South El Monte kept a lead of at least 40 points.

Also in the last 3 games combined(including last night's/tonights), South El Monte's defense was near perfect, tonight/last night's game (in the 3rd quarter) was the only time in 10 1/2 quarters that the defense allowed a score.

So are we going to get some love, or do we have to continue to prove the excellence?

Also in regards to South Hills vs Foothill both teams have something to prove. How good are they really?

These teams havent beat anybody yet, the best wins vs winning teams were
Foothill best win was against El Modena 6-4 (non play-off team 56-38.
South Hills beat Fulleron 7-3 (with a forfeit win really 6-4) 28-7

Neither team has a quality win yet. Whoever does can have bragging right until the next week when they have to play El Dorado.

Canyon was a paper tiger. They have had some wins against poor teams and they had lost a couple weeks ago to Tustin who did not even make the playoffs. They are a very soft team that had great stats against poor teams.

The only upset if any was Wilson over Mayfair. Mayfair has allot of talent, the coaching is very poor.

Should be an exciting 2nd round. Charter Oak, Trabuco and El Dorado should all win. The great match-up will be Foothill vs South Hills. Both teams have great offense and below average defense. I honestly expect the point total to be up near 100 points. Should be an exciting game!

that gilmore kid from wilson is something special... he was a one man wrecking crew tonight. mayfair did themselves in with all their penalties, but they couldn't stop gilmore either. that int to seal the game's just something you don't do. what a player.

Sorry natsayers....but we won!

The game was about who would eventually end-up with the ball. GHS's offensive was tuned for the occasion as they racked up yards running off the wing-T. Kid Kuluzny connected when it counted most and provided conversion to continue our drives. GHS's D traded punches with a vertical and passing Upland offense that took what we offered and capitalized on first down yardage that kept everyone gripping their seats. In the end, Coach P pulled a play out of his coaching past which hammered Damien in league play years ago. That decision proved to be exactly what GHS needed to corner a first round CIF victory. The Upland faithfuls were visibly shaken over the loss. The final was so well scripted that John Stienbeck called for his ink pen. Those in attendance witnessed a dam great game by two tough teams that never broke stride toward their pursuit of victory. 29 to 28 might not have be the largest margin of control, but who cares because GHS earned another week of challenge in the tough CIF Inland Section. Thanks to all who supported and celebrated our teams achievement tonight.....now it's time to evaluate our next opponent.

Congrats to all SGV teams that will move-on to round two in the CIF.

Man Oh Man, what an awesome game. 2 teams knockin heads in a great venue. Large crowd...great choice for Game of the Week Fred. Didn't see you at the tailgate but saw you and the crew on the sidelines. I thought our O-line pounded their D-line most of the night and our running game was running on all cylinders. They had most of their studs on offense whereas we tend to have more of ours on D. That made for real battle when Upland had the ball. They landed several punches and we landed several as well. We didn't force any turnovers like we normally do, so our bend did break on occaison. But we held a few times as well. They punted twice...we never punted all night. Our 2 turnovers kept it close as Upland kept coming back just when it seemed we may pull away. In the end it was a huge ballsey call by Pasqy to go for 2 in OT for the win. There may have been a couple of curious calls earlier, but the halfback pass for the TD in OT and then the play action pass for 2 were the answer in this one. All you crow-eaters who have ENDLESSLY cried "one-and-done" Glendora or Pasqy need to step up and pay your dues. You boys made me proud. I said a couple of weeks ago, go 5-0 in league and you set yourself apart as one of the greats in school annals; win round 1 and you prove to be the valley's best (unless CO runs the table, I give them the top spot). Now with a shot at the top dog next week, you get a crack at history and national recognition. But for now, enjoy this one, you deserve it. Great team win, lots of big players tonight.

Anony, MTC's guy LAST year was Crooky. I think he just wanted coach to stick with him alone. Seems he did step up at the end of the season. I do wonder big Mikey, now that this season has mostly played out, you thought last year's class was "the group" while others thought this year's senior class was loaded. What say you now? Outstanding kids all, but this year has been extra special. Thanks Trib for bringin the cameras tonight; I believe we'll put on a good show and the crowd will be lively.

Kaluz and the boys realize each game is their last game at this point and will comeout fighting for the right to play "one more game".

The team realizes they are making "recent history" at GHS and truly what to ride this wave as far as they can.

Look for the game of the season by the Tartans as they come out unusally strong in the first qtr. In speaking with my son this morning, he said he and his teamates really want to play and BEAT Corona and will do whatever it takes to win tonights game. It will be a "Battle of the Skirts" tonight. Hope Upland brings their pipers. Would be real nice to hear "Amazing Grace" performed after their lost! The Tartans will be playing "Scotland the Brave"!

Great piece on Gilmore today! What a trooper. Much like the Withem boys from San Dimas, he has set aside adversity and excelled in football. There is no doubt in my mind that he (and others like him) will be successful at whatever they try. Another youngster that warrants attention for rising from extreme adversity is Chris Pace (#40) from San Dimas. He's turned into a fine young man despite some unreal difficulties as you younger child. You should take some time and talk with him. He's a great kid and a very good football player. Hey... BP, SD, and NV... tonight is the night to shine... go and represent and have fun... the score is not as important as the effort... I'm pulling for all of you and you're all champions as far as I'm concerned! Rock on Saints!

Thanks for your kind comments about about Tim LA Conq, he has played with my son since Jr. All American, and he truly is a great kid. Uncle Bob, Bertha and Tim have all worked very hard to make him the wonderful young man that he is today.

Thanks for the article about Tim Gilmore. I got chills reading about his story. I have a new-found appreciation for the kid and his accomplishments. There are too many kids today that blame their behavior on their upbringing. Gilmore shows us, as Oviedo says, that anyone can overcome their past problems to better their life.
