Football: Quick look ahead at South Hills for 2008

i hear northview is expected to have another good year.. NORTHVIEW VARSITY TEAM IS OUTSTANDING and that the NORTHVIEW JV TEAM is pretty good. Heard that both teams did real well against South Hills.

I thought it was interesting in the Tribune Wrestling Preview that it was noted that the Valley may be catching up to Northview and the following few days, Northview literally CRUSHES South Hills on the mat. It was the year that the Huskies said the domiance of Northview would stop and it just wasn't so, now was it...Also, what is up with the South Hills Coaching Staff going apesh!t after the match. There is only #1 wrestling school in the Valley and it's the The Big "N" baby.

I agree that match would be awesome. Hey, has Alcantar always been there? I don't remember hearing about him before last year. I remember Houston & lopez (both 189 NV) but not alcantar. I don't remember if Silva ever wrestled houston when he was at 89's, but I know he wrestled Lopez and whoever was at 215 a year or two ago.. anyways, Good luck NV see you at 5 counties and Masters... Whatever happened to the good old days. There was a time (72 and 73) when LA kicked the Sh*t out of the OC teams. Teams like LH, Crespi, Santa Anna Valley, and Servite. Going to a state game if there had been one back then would have been a lock. Where are you Benton, Hertel, Sproul, and Hill. Looks like LA could use you all again. It appears Gano is no Despain either. The good old days where did they go!!!

I will check it out. Aside from Bill and all the other non intrested anti wrestling people out there, if you ever go to watch a Dual you will see how exciting it is. Football is the HS #1 sport no doubt, but wrestling is a exciting sport to watch......SPW a Alcantar / Silva Match up would be nice right now, that one could go either way. The cool thing is they haven't even hit their full form yet, as they keep going they get better. I look for these two to do some major damage this year.

It was an exciting dual last night. We moved people around. Not having Stevie and Andrew sure hurt us. I think we still could have pulled out the win if some of our kids had lost but not pinned. Danny Escamilla is solid. He wrestled up last night, but got caught and put himself in a bad situation. If remember correctly he was beating the kid when he got caught. Danny is tough and will be back. Props to Bosco, they beat us. Will NV be at the Lemore bash?

These Blogs are becoming a LITTLE to UNFRIENDLY now a days & that being said I will stay away .I feel bad as to what this site has become . TOO MANY PEOPLE make this site a BASH FEST ! I wish I could comment on football, but I will stick to what I know. Both Ortega and Espindola are great, a lot of fun to watch. Hernandez will be ready. Silva's a stud and is working hard, as is the rest of the team. I wish I was able to catch some of the NV matches. Good luck this season, and good luck to the rest of the SGV.

Yes we should have dualed this season, good for both squads, We will see you at masters and I believe one or two of our boys will go State. Props to the Ortega kid he is very good. We all know Silva is your ace tho. Hernandez, man get that boy in shape and get him back out on the compeating map. He is probably better than Silva if he would just keep his weight down. Good luck but I still think your team only runs 5 deep and thats with hernandez...maybe next year we can hook up for a Dual...Man what is up with your football program.?

Vike, I believe Amat has an excellent chance at repeating. You seem to know our team well. I don't believe Hernandez was that much over 89. I wish we would have dualed this year.. Silva and Alcantar (among others) would be a great match. I guess we will have to wait till masters...

I do not see Amat repeating. Silva should be wrestling for Northview he lives around the corner from us. Amat is lucky they had him for Football and now wrestling. He is one of our locals. Why did they let Hernandez get so damn fat? what are they feeding that boy at home.? He was a great wrestler as a junior but now he has eaten his way out of compeating. HE LOOKS LIKE HE IS DRINKING BEER ALREADY.

Well, guys, it looks like there is at least one school that's not afraid to play Muir: Diamond Ranch.

I just looked at the LA Times blog and it said that Diamond Ranch is considering playing Muir. The blog also said the Panthers are going to play Bishop Amat, Oaks Christian (again), Colony, Chino Hills and a team from Colorado. That's a tough pre-season schedule, but it's great that they are playing Bishop Amat.

Whoever wrote this was trying to look ahead at the 08 season (already?) and says that his top teams for for next season are: Diamond Ranch, South Hills, St. Francis, Charter Oak and Muir.

It's an interesting idea but it will never happen. I don't believe school officials want the headaches to sell extra tickets. Local rivals like CO vs South Hills will sell more tickets and will have less headaches. Fred said it himself when he talks to coaches who don't want anything to do with Muir. There are plenty of City Section schools Muir can play if they want good competition.

Ex Falcon is an example. How many felonies do you have pal??

Neighborhood rivalries get overzealous crowds. I don't think that would happen with Charter Oak vs Muir. The added ticket sales could support any additional crowd control.

I'm proud to see Coach Z sign up LA in zero week! He told me he tried to sign CO, but their administration nixed the idea. So LA gets to try and stop Barbone and co. Good luck with that!

Instead of looking in the future we should still be looking in the present. What Happend to the coach of the year???

The part I am questioning is the added security needed when you play a team like Muir or Duarte or any of these other trouble schools. It cost more school district money to pay for security because kids from these schools seem to have a hard time behaving. Look at when Muir plays Pasadena. There is always trouble when those schools play each other.

If I am in administration I don't want the trouble associated with any of those schools. As I said before let them play other local schools with similar problems.

What part are you questioning? No, I have never attended Muir or Duarte High, but I do feel that Muir is deeper in skill positions than any other school in the valley. Fred's assessment is correct. Muir can beat anybody in the valley, but they could also lose to ~six teams. Muir could either lose close ones to the Miramonte champs or blow them out. Either way, it would be great for the valley to have more East vs West matchups.

I support and attend games for both Wilson & LA.

Prior to injuries, LA had a TREMENDOUS defense that many considered the best in SGV (TRIBUNE).

In contrast Wilson's defense was, well..terrible.

In pre-season interviews Gano made it clear that LA offense would struggle...and did.

LA's major proplem this year was too many Turnovers on Offense.

As an open-enrollment school that attracts players, LA can still compete locally. I don't really see the demographics getting any worse... they weren't really any better in 1997 when Gano first arrived.

Plus, there are a -lot- of underclassmen at LA that decided to be academically inelegible this year. That's the first area the school needs to address.

McBride did not last the season so in esscence he is a reject. Not his fault, he was over used and put thru the grind to carry that team due to lack of talent at the other skilled positions aka QB, WR, and return man. He was chewed up and spit out by the Los Altos recruit club. Had he stayed at Amat and shared the rock with Wagner and company he would have been better off. He never breaks his leg playing for Amat. Gano used this kid and tore him up. All at Amat knew this was going to be the case and they were right you damaged him. The word of your coach does not go very far anymore and the talented kids are starting to find out Los Altos is all hype now. Wilson will get those kids and they are all free to go to the D1 private around the corner. Los Altos reputation went down the drain after this past "put a bandaid (BA rejects) on it season...Los Altos is done. there are no more Rodriguez or Longorias for your o-line walking the halls after this year. it's over.

Wilson blows you pathetic loser (GRI incognito?). The only kids opting for Wilson instead of LA, are the ones with no balls to compete for a real team, and position. And, after they realize that can't even make it there, they will transfer to Workman.

Los Altos is not getting any recruits I do not know where this info comes from or is it just wishful thinking. After your downfall last year with the rejects recruits (Tillis, Tamayo, Ortiz McBride)from BA no one wants a part of Gano and all that BS. Your own homegrown talent is walking from you because of loyalty issues. LA will not be the same for a few years after this last year of high hopes only to hit a pitfall.......Wilson and Amat are getting those kids now....

You can't be serious. Most HS administrators are more concerned about safety then facing an average team from the Hood. Let me guess you go to Muir? The same applys to Duarte. Look at what happened at one of their games last year. Let the teams from the Hood play other teams in the Hood.

I don't believe that LA can establish a year-in, year-out "dominant" program like back-in-the-day. They can still possibly come across the occasional nugget (Cody, Harwell), and make a run for a couple of years, but they can no longer compete with the top players that continue to attend the "yet to be affected by demographics" SGV schools.

A lot of people feel that way about Duarte as well, but teams still put them on the schedule. Maybe locals don't want to risk getting blown out by a high octane Muir offense.

Problems like with San Dimas and Bonita? Maybe CO would lose their RB pipeline if they lost to Muir.

Why does no one schedule Muir? Maybe its because that school is from the "hood" and no local schools want any problems. Who can blame them?

In 1999 or 2003 they win a close one. In 2000 or 2002 they lose a close one. In 1998 or 2001 they lose by a comfortable but not embarassing margin.

In any of the last 3 years, they get blown out of the water.

This next year they have to replace 21 of their 22 starting spots from last season.

While I'm always of the opinion that a great team should schedule at least one powerhouse just to find out how good they really are, LA really needs to get back to being a championship contender before scheduling such a game would be worthwhile.

BTW, why just the PAC-5? Frankly I find the top Inland and Magic Mountain area teams to be scarier.

How about some baby steps, first.
Step 1: Win back the Miramonte league.
Step 2: Win or get to the finals in the Southwest division most years.
Step 3: When the program is back to that level, schedule one or two powerhouses in the preseason.
Step 4: Now we can worry about state game ratings.

Problem is, no matter who you are, it's tough to make a consistant winner out of a medium-sized public school, especially given LA's demographics.

If it's determined that LA and SH don't have to play each other (they really don't want to, especially in the middle of league), then they'll need another game.

La Habra will blowout SH again next year. Hopefully their will be no excuses this next season due to it being the second game of the season like this past year....La Habra will be strong Their undefeated JV team coming up to mix what they already have up there. This is scary because they could be better than this past year. SH should not be scheduling Rosemead...I'd like to see them go out to the inland empire and schedule a Los Osos or a Redlands east valley.

The schedule is good but the only good game is going to be the St. Francis/Crespi game which they will lose and the La Habra game which could go either way. They will roll the rest of the teams. Northview and Rosemead might get hurt. But good job of those 2 schools trying to play some real teams.

New York, you know how Muir is, they could beat anyone here, or they could get beat by six or seven of our Trib teams. I've asked coaches about scheduling Muir, and the overwhelming majority say the administrations won't do it. I'm so sick of hearing that. In all the years I've covered Muir, there was never one problem. There was only the isolated incident years ago against Monrovia.

From what I hear, they're still bickering over the contract of who plays who between Miramonte and San Antonio. I think both LA and South Hills are trying to get out of the current deal. So the scheduling isn't really complete.

Teams on LA's 2008 schedule (off the top of my head, I may remember wrong): 0- San Dimas, 1- Northview, 2- Empty, 3- Ayala? (not Sure), 4- West Covina, 5- La Serna, 6- Bonita, 7- South Hills, another San Antonio Team, or no one, 8- Diamond Ranch, 9- Charter Oak, 10- Wilson.

I may have gotten 3 and 4 mixed up, too.

A local SGV team is a state bowl game? BAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAA. Let me pick myself up off the floor. That was the joke of the night. Thanks for the laugh!

I take back what I said about La Habra. They have 2,300 students. South Hills has just under 2100. La Habra is not necessarily small. Same size as Oceanside. Duarte has 1,200.

South Hills always seems to step up and schedule upper division teams either from the OC or IE. I'm surprised they have not schedule Amat.

So Fred, how do you think Muir would do against the teams in your new coverage area?

Would love to see South Hills or anyone locally in a state bowl game. I posted this because it's a great schedule of local and non-local games. I'll post more nonleague schedules as I talk to coaches throughout the offseason.

What a schedule. La Habra went undefeated in all of their divisions Frosh, Soph JV and Varsity which went on to win a championship. Scheduling them again is huge, most of their team returns and they a lose about two key seniors. Look for La Habra to come back next year and bid for a bk to bk championship. Crespi will also be a force but they are losing Austin Shanks, EJ woods,Joseph Fauria and Kevin Prince. Crespi will be rebuilding but they are well coached. Give you guys credit thats why your coach is who he is, he really gets his team ready as he did this year. Your team should have been a champion this year but things happen. A Amat So Hills game would have been great.

Do you plan to follow Aram's formula of promoting South Hills early with the hope that they can make the State Bowl Game? Good luck if St. Bonny's gets to represent the small school. La Habra must feel a bit disappointed by getting trumped that way.

wow south hills is going to be the CO of this year. no line. but watch out for the defense is goin g to be posting gooses eggs. but i think Deen willl tear the vally apart next yer with that recieving core. look for the south hills of old.

Then came the transfers, the defections, the discipline problems, and a repeat of the previous season that proves that the biggest Amat question mark is the coaching staff - starting at the top!

In conversations I've had, Amat has been more than willing to play some of our area's top local teams, but many of our local teams have been unwilling to schedule them, with the exception of Diamond Ranch.

As you can see from last Season Amat plays a tough schedule and would have loved to play So.Hills this upcoming season. Who does So. Hills have coming back? I understand they may be rebuilding with the loss of some key Seniors to graduation. Is their another Wells in their back pocket? Amat has a strong junior and Soph. class that played varsity this year coming back, most of them started. Amats crop this year will make noise and get to the playoff round. question mark for Amat could be our O and D lines. Replacing Ochoa,Stremple,Austin and Silva will be a tough task.

Great post here. At he very least it creates ongoing interest in the football aspect of this blog and it also gives us an element of certianty as to who is going to play whom next season.
Also, I think you stumbled onto something very interesting here, because now, everyone is going to ask the next obvious question...who is my team going to play next year fred !
