Player of the year: Jade Esquivel, Los Altos
School: Los Altos
Grade: Senior
Position: Outside hitter
Notable: Esquivel helped the Conquerors enjoy one of their strongest campaigns in recent years. Los Altos earned a share of the Miramonte League title with Bonita and advanced to the second round of the CIF-Southern Section playoffs, finishing with a 22-10 record. Esquivel, the focal point of most opponents' game plans, averaged nearly four kills per game. She also had the incredible knack of finding open space on the opposition's side of the net, often when the defense appeared to be in perfect position. She also earned co-league MVP honors with Bonita's Katy McCreery. She has yet to finalize her collegiate plans, but said she is leaning toward attending Cal State Los Angeles, where her mother was a volleyball standout.
Quotable: "It feels awesome (to be player of the year). I've been playing so long, so to finally be honored like this, it's something I deserve."

honestly i told myself wouldnt go on here..

and this is why,, yes its me jade #13 from

los altos..

well,, first off i want say congrats to both Annie Kim and Cursty Jackson,, thats awesome..

im sorry they got over looked

but for all the ppl who are saying that i am cocky and should of stated my words differently and so much more,,

I've never been in this type of situation before,, and i am truely honored, maybe some ppl feel i shouldnt or i dont deserve this award and some believe i do, but i must say they took tons of pictures of me that day, and they chose that picture, if it were up to me i would have chose one where i was smiling, and i never thought that quote would have been taken in such a negative way. And to be honest i do feel i deserve it,, because hard work, dedication, and never giving up paid off.. but that not the only thing that got me there,, my mom family coaches friends teahers for never giving up on me

im sure there are tons of girls that feel the same,, such as the two mentioned.. If anyone else was in my shoes i know i would have congradulated them, because its something to cherish..

and i hate to talk about myself but for those who do think im cocky,, you judged me too soon..

just want to say to the tribune and everyone who stayed by my side for the struggles that have occurred thank you for the opportunity and support it means more than you know..

feel free to respond or email me.

xoxo

At the end of the day Cursty Jackson got a full ride to a D1 school period point blank and is the best in the valley. Full rides just dont get handed out 2 anyone. Annie Kim got the second highest honor a dv 2 scholarship... therefore Cursty jackson and Annie should be competing for player of the year not JADE, but wat is done is done we all noe that either Annie Kim or Cursty Jackson should have taken home that honor

Baldwinpark Spiker said:

Seriously, I think is the Bonita fan who are trying to spoil the Los Altos's recognition party. Give the kid a break about her comment.

But, who is the real Queen of the Valley? Jade or Annie Kim of Gabrielino High. Didn't Gabrielino stopped Los Altos's run in the playoff?

There are only 2 kids that I know that got a full-ride scholarship. They are Annie Kim (CSULA) and Krusty Jackson (UNLV). Are there any other in the real San Gabriel Valley? Please, NCAA Div.3 and NAIA schools doesn't count.

Why does coach of the year have to be a coach who went far in the playoff? No team in the area really went all the way to the CIF final. With the firepower and heights like Bonita, they should have gone all the way. I say the Ganesha head coach should have got coach of the year with his leadership of getting a program from no where to contending for playoff spot. Or the Ayala Head coach for winning back to back league championship with a depleted young squad.

Funny how most of you are bit$hing and moaning about what this young lady said or how she looks in a picture.

This is about Jade not you.

And the majority of "you" don't even have the guts to post your "real" names. It's pretty easy to hide and speak out isn't it?

...please don't answer that.

Jade, congratulations! "YOU DESERVE YOUR AWARD"

james are you afraid of girls? Gee why don't you just crawl back under that rock and crap on yourself instead of other people. What a coward.

Thanks for your contribution.

her striking cocky pose for the camera speaks volumes. She looks cocky and ready to kick some ones ass rather than hitting the court. So as far as i'm concerned the statement reflects her cocky i'm a bad mudda f#cka attitude.

V-ball,
Let me guess you a friend or family member? Stop the whining. She got a full ride. Who cares if she got all league or not. Grow up!!

Congrats Jade, you do deserve it and keep telling yourself that. All of these bloggers are jealous and never accomplished anything in their high school careers so they have to hate on you. I would say you are one of the most humble people I have ever met, and I am so proud of you. These bloggers would kill to be in your shoes and have achieved what you have achieved. As 'C' said, it is an honor to know you and to be able to work with you over the past two years. "Great Job!"

Joe Amat said:

Congratualations! Honestly!

It is an accomplishment to just start on a good HS volleyball team, much less be All-League, MVP, or SGV player of the year. Certainly something to be proud of.

Participation in sports teaches kids so much - some of the lessons are fun, and some are not so fun. Sometimes the players that get the most accolades also have more opportunities to learn those life lessons. What do they say? "To those whom much is given... much is expected"?

"Thrown to the wolves" in an interview? You mean like an interview that could happen when trying to get a job - or get into a college. Who do you think would get more favorable considertion? The person who says, ""I'm grateful for everything. I put a lot of hard work in, and it all paid off in the end. I was surprised to (be named player of the year)."
or the one who says, ""It feels awesome (to be player of the year). I've been playing so long, so to finally be honored like this, it's something I deserve."

Who would you hire, or choose to represent your school? Not that one is bad, but if you had to choose? Even though both may have, really, meant about the same thing.

No different than a misplay on the court that is corrected the next time out, we all get better at everything that we experience.
This might be one of them. So there is nothing wrong with saying we'll do better next time. Lord knows I've walked out of plenty of meetings, interviews, sales pitches, etc and thought that I wish I said something different.

To say, "WTF...who cares what was said...I do deserve it (which implies that no one else might)" is simply passing up a teachable moment in which someone can get better. We all have the responsibility to take advantage of teachable moments when it comes to our future leaders - the student-athletes of today.

Seriously, Congratulations on all the players accomplishments and hopes that there are many more

Congrats is all that's required said:

If as you say, "Fred threw her to the wolves" my question Randy is "Who are the wolves". Fred did nothing wrong other than allow a high school athlete to have her moment. The rest is the blogger who started the adults wanton need to pass judgement on someone else's kid.

Humility? Seasoned interviewee? Come on? Are we that ridiculous as to see something where there is nothing to see, make something out of nothing when one blogger starts us down a pitiful path.

We're ALL better than that!

randy said:

Yo WTF, I'm with Jade....I ain't hating on her. I don't think the quote shoulda ever made the thread. Fred threw her to the wolves. But it was a cocky thing to say out loud in front of a reporter, and i hope she learns from that. Kudos to her on being named POY!

WTF said:

"choosing words more wisely"....that's the pot calling the kettle black!

Let's stop with this stupid line of thinking!

For our own sake.

Totally ridiculous.

Grown men talking out of their rear ends is what I see and hear on this blog and this high school senior makes one comment and the bloggers come out in force.

Come on. Get a clue ...if not some sense of perspective.

"moral idiots and superficial hypocrites" ...quote me on that!

Jade what a hell of an accomplishment. Best of the best. You're an elite company...enjoy it before the old farts pass gas again..or at least pass judgement...that's a difference without an distinction.

randy said:

I hope, and I'd bet that Jade has the chance to have a few more interviews during her sports career. I'm thinking she'll choose her words more wisely next time around. She is only 17, and like Joe says....how many of us said things we regret at that age, how many of us at 17 woulda handled it perfectly? Thats what i've been thinking since this post came out......

Gutless Comment II said:

Okay she's a kid and bloggers are slamming her comments...we're "mostly" adults and WHO IS SLAMMING OUR COMMENTS.

MOST COMMENTS ON THIS BLOG COULDN'T OR WOULDN'T BE SAID TO THE FACE OF THE INTENDED VICTIM....YET PEOPLE COME HERE AND SLAM A KID AND GET ALL SOCIALECONOMIC ON HER AND MAKE THESE QUANTUM LEAPS OF PSYCHO CRAP ...IT'S DISGUSTING!

She said nothing wrong...in fact she said it right! No one knows why she phrased it that way...but when kids get that "big envelope" at the end of the year...I'll bet two things will be said over and over again..."You deseved it!" based on your hard work (BY FRIENDS AND FAMILY)....and honestly the kid will admit...without a microphone in their face...."I DESERVE IT!" Knowing the challenges and sacrifices THEY made...when no one was looking. I know this...because it happened to my kid. And all the naysayers and the "You don't deserve it!" and know nothings (wish I were you) people will have to deal with it...or NOT! Makes no difference. Done is done, in is in and read it and weap! Over!

Wonder what rock Queenie will crawl up from NOW...go back to pulling the wings off of insects you gutless little person..."You deserve it!"

Besides I think the picture tells the story....against all odds. Tribune Photos ROCK! Nice job!

Best of luck POY Jade Esquivel...you made your mark on the SGV recordbook....10, 20, 30 , 40 years from now...YOU'LL STILL BE WHAT YOU ARE NOW (AND SO MUCH MORE)...believe that!

2007 SAN GABRIEL VALLEY TRIBUNE VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR! (drum roll please...) JADE ESQUIVEL LOS ALTOS HIGH SCHOOL.

"BOOYAH!"

Joe Amat said:

Congratulations to Jade.

The boys H2O POY just said: "I'm grateful for everything. I put a lot of hard work in, and it all paid off in the end. I was surprised to (be named player of the year)."

which almost says the same thing as

"It feels awesome (to be player of the year). I've been playing so long, so to finally be honored like this, it's something I deserve."

The probable difference (sorry about the obvious stereotype) is, I'm guessing, that the young man has watched thousands of sports interviews in his life and has probably imagined in his head answering questions like that. Jade probably hasn't had that practice. Schoefield might be a little more eloquent and chose his words a little better. I'd bet Jade would do it different next time.

"...it feels awesome..." might be her way of saying"...I was surprised ..."
"...it really paid off..." equates (in a weird way) to "...I deserve this... - just said much better.

...or maybe it speaks to the value of a private education . Either way, at 17 years old - how would most of us have answered that question?

Congrats to all that were honored - in all of the sports of their choosing

Queen of the SGV,

sure looks like the vote is in, i do believe they have voted you the butt lick here.......tough old bird that you are, bashing on this GIRL.....you have impressed us all...........good day to you sir :)

I have seen many games this year in the SGV and you hit the 1st team right on the head. Jade Esquival deserves the honor of Player of the Year. Gomez will be a force next year.

2nd team not so sure, I know certain coaches push for certain players and I will leave it at that.

Coach of the year, I waivered all year on a couple coaches down the stretch when Los Altos beat Bonita I said the De La Vara from Los Altos was the coach of the year but when playoffs came around not so impressed. Good selection.

do you guys HAVE to always hate on something in this blog? so the girl says something which makes her cocky? big deal... let the girl enjoy her recognition. i bet you hate on her only because YOU never got POY huh? me i was a nobody and i appreciate my teammates who all achieved whatever they achieve. they say something like "im happy and i think i deserve it" i didnt get all over them.

people,
these are kids.
let them enjoy their moment in the limelight

All of you are losers getting in fights on a High School sports blog. Seriously grow up, who cares what she said. Mabye if people actually knew her story and the struggles she'd recently gone through you'd probably feel she deserves it too...

Great job Jade you earned (deserved) it.

Apparently, there ain't no fixing stupid.

Read from the bottom to the top, as many times as it takes until you figure out who my comments were meant for.

Then take your meds, and have a nice day.

Are you kidding me???? If anyone questions this kid's humility or character you are out of your mind!!! I have spent my entire career with high school students and believe me when I say that Jade may be the most humble that I've ever been around. I DO know her personally and I DO agree that the quote of choice does not sum up Jade at all. However, I also know how hard she has worked and all that she has gone through to get there so she DOES deserve it!! Jade, I'm sure you know who this is and I want you to know how proud I am of you and how honored I am to have spent some great times together. You have grown so much since freshman year and you should be very proud of the great person that you are and have always been!! Continue being an outstanding athlete, soaring EAGLE, and great kid!!! Congrats on all of your accomplishments!!!

I didnt call anyone a ghetto trash talker, YOU DID...read your post......"your setting a fine, ghetto, trash talking example for future SGV high school athletes"------YOU WROTE THAT J-O,not me........dont preach to the choir abour setting examples for sportsmanship---DO IT ON THE FIELD, IN THE STANDS, AND AT HOME where it counts....instead of kicking this girl around like some punk would do, after ol' Freddy set her up with this quote.......

LA Conq said:

Thanks Randy...

Couldn't have said it better myself. I DO know her personally. And I DO know her story, her trials...especially as of recent. I'd share but they are highly personal and I feel it inappropriate to do so.

Freddy...why do that? Why choose to print a quote from a great kid that makes her sound arrogant? You're better than that. Do you truly feel that quote sums up Jade Esquivel? Use some discretion.

Queen of the SGV said:

"randy"

Did I call the girl a "ghetto trash talker"? No, you just did. My 2nd post comments were directed at the loser who posted as "Gutless Comment".

I merely pointed out that I thought the youth of today could use a lesson in humility. Whatever happened to accepting an award, and just saying thank you?

You all jumped on the hater bandwagon, because you forgot about what it means to leave it all on the field, and shake hands when it's over, win or lose.

randy said:

She's a kid, just a high school kid, who is being a recognized as pretty damn good volleyball player in the local rag. She gets her mug shot in the paper and right under it is this short quote that comes off maybe alittle odd, maybe cocky, something maybe someone with a little more life experience wouldn't have said.

Right away you ASSume that she's a ghetto trash talker? Did Fred even HAVE to print that?? Just reading it with nothing else to base it off of, does give it a stinky smell. Lets see here, the Trib/Fred gives her the POY title, then throws her under the bus with that 2 sentence quote after the interview....and some of you donkeys wanna slam her to the ground for it??? Do you know her personally? Do you know her story?? For the record, I dont. It is amazing though how everyone is always trying to pull each others chain around here...I guess thats why we all keep coming back......But I thought we werent gonna bash on the kids-just each other........?

Queen of the SGV said:

Spoken like a true champion. You're setting a fine ghetto, trash talking, example for the future SGV high school athletes. You're what we all want to be like, when we grow up.

Gutless Comment said:

Queen of the Valley.....I quess we know who the real "queen" is....gutless comment.

Hard work pays off...that's what I got from her comment.

Maybe if "you" ever accomplished something of merit in your life you wouldn't be mocking someone who has.

Completely Gutless. I'll wait for your list of accomplishments. It won't take long.

Queen of the SGV said:

"Knowing" you deserve something is one thing, being graceful about receiving it is another.

Queen of the SGV...

If you knew Jade's WHOLE story you might think twice about that comment. God forbid one of our kids, having gone through a life of struggles, feel that they actually deserve something positive!

Freddy...

Will there be an actual article on Jade so we can hear her story?

Queen of the SGV said:

CLASSIC...

Just what our youth is missing today. A little humility.
