They're talking about us ...

The Glendora High School newspaper wrote an article about this blog. I thought it was a fair discussion so I'm posting it. Like anything else, the negative stuff always grabs the headlines, that's how it is. But I give Shield reporter Alex Moskowitz a lot of credit for running with this, and he did an excellent job of remaining impartial. By the way, did you know this website is banned at some schools and school districts because of its content (at least that's what I've been told). Administrators don't want students wasting school time reading all this stuff, and I don't blame them. It's probably the right thing to do. Students who want this will go home and read it and comment anyway. So again, be careful about what you post. Think before you hit send. For all the great comments we read on these blogs, it's the stupid and unnecessary comments that will always grab the attention. It's the world we live in.

Yeah Don, I went to Pioneer from 74 to 78. Behind our back yard was the choose & cut Christmas tree farm that was alongside the Southern Pacific railroad & the San Gabriel riverbed between Slauson & Washinton Blvd. A fun
place to grow up back then catching an occasional catfish or bluegill and wandering through the trails along the railroad tracks.

BTW, to “TOO LATE!!!!!! “

Tough luck on you LL dreams.

Now get over it and get a life.

Simplement stupéfiant Dan!

You officially qualify as a Whittier homie

Yep, familiar with Burrito Track and yes, most of the visits to Salsa Hut were made after 2 a.m on weekends, (usually after an extended visit to one of the finer entertainment venues in the area).

The Salsa Hut was on the NE corner of Mulberry and Painter, kitter-corner from what was then Sierra HS. All of this about two blocks east of my old haunts at York field.

Did you go to HS in the area?

Don

Thanks Randy,
I forgot that was Jim's burgers, I use to go to
the other Jim's burgers on Slauson & Rosemead too, I guess I was a fast food junkie back then, come to think of it, I still eat out a lot.

Don,
Went to the Salsa Hut many times, usually
on a Friday or Sat. night, it was caddy corner to Sierra Highschool if I recall, that was a long time ago, did you ever go to Buritto Track? If I remember right it was on Mills just south of Mullberry.

NOW THEY WRITE THE ARTICLE !!!!!

Glendora hypocrites.

Hey Dan,

+1 on the Jim's Burgers, also a location in La Mirada when we wanted to hang with the rich white kids.

Similar to the ASB (Andy's Super Burger), multi locations on east side.

Do not recall Mario's but we did frequent a place near St. Paul HS called the Salsa Hut in the the 80's.

Too much fast food has caused too big of a gut.

Happy Holidays,

Don

the great skate, the carnation milkman gave a reciept that you can trace a milk truck.run joe run,go go gophers

Dan, the burger joint on Telegraph is called Jim's....home of the the famous "502" burger at 2 in the morning.....

Plaid Lad thats a great story about you & Danny "red" Lopez, it would have been a great Readers Digest story.

Don, did you ever go to Mario's Taco's on Whittier Blvd? I loved their Green Burrito's
Also what was the name of that Hamburger stand on Passons & Telegragh I frequented there many times.

Fred, is there a boys hoops tournament at Nogales starting today? Can you post the brackets and results?

I had to bump into the third spot CO BRO.....just throwing a dig at JFR & yourself.....you guys should know by now I'm "Lou" fan.

MTC

JFR.....

Thanks man I just don't have as much time anymore to run my takes.

But the before mention on your list I'll settle for the third spot, those guys are class acts and I will bow to those guys anytime.

2008 will surely possess a challenge for each SGV program. Some will obviously regroup with experienced returners while other programs will hit their strides with names we haven't even heard of as of yet.

Some on this grey-space will continue to compare SGV with the likes of the IE or OC. I suppose as comparison come and go each will target certain points of interest that will be backed by percentages and averages that some might agree and/or disagree with.

The fact of the matter, is that during the 2007 season I never paid much attention toward those comparison as I did toward our own inner valley competitions. So there is no point in arguing because for every section of HS football there is bound to be another team looming in the outskirts with bigger, faster, and stronger athletes.

I happen to favor all of the HS football players that the SGV produces every year whether there Division 1-2-3 or scholarship bound athletes, or NOT. We all saw a great season in 2007 and I'm sure "SGV-2008" will produce plenty of the same.

FYI: Stay healthy and keep safe during the off-season

Randy ......

We sure did exchanged some nasty's but we were guys that knew the limits and respected the blog and it made for some good threads and topics at that time... Merry Christmas Randy you are one of the "old-timers" and differences aside you have my respect.

And to all the "Mike The Clone" friends you guys are all special because the game we love opened up so many doors for us all, and more doors than others, but we still carry the lessons we learned from our coaches, teammates, trainers, strength coaches, the game of football to the farthest level we each played. It is clear to me that they still carry lasting impressions on all of you.

With that said…………

Merry Christmas to you all, God Bless.

I AM OUT!

Mike the Clone, we exchanged some nasties a while back didnt we? That seems like a long time ago...This blog has tempered down a bit since Fred took over, and I never woulda guessed there were these kind of memories from you old fuddy duddys :)

I was just a kid, but I remember several of those places that have been thrown out there.... my mom waas the oldest of 11, she to went to Soledad Elementary and then Queen of Angels High School. But I grew up in Downey back when that town was LILY white (its changed alittle since the '70s). I woulda gone to Warren if we'd stayed (GO BEARS). I remember shopping at Atlantic Square, Two Guys, and that Zodys in Montebello. 7 out of 8 uncles went to Salesian (the last one went to Garfield--can you blame him?) and i can just remember trying to tag along with them as they hit up ALL those places you guys are mentioning.....

What ever happened to Bluorca? I miss that 'ol fish...

Merry X-mas you sick bloggers.......and have a happy, safe new year!

its good to know there are actually some intelligent people out there... good job alex ...
maybe one day you can join fred and the tribune =]

What a great thread, brings back lots of memories.

I will never forget playing ditch em on the roof of White Front when I attended Gladstone growing up in Azusa. I remember streaking through Sears for twenty bucks only to have a neighbor see me and tell my mom before i even got home, We used to be able to ride our bicycles to Puddingstone at 5 in the moring from Azusa, It is a different world today, People are different, Sports keeps us all together watching, laughing, yelling, complaining, smiling, and united. I pray and hope all of the fantastic athletes that are still playing in the SGV high school sport programs realize that they are truly fortunate! Life is very short, Love your teammates, appreciate and compliment your competition, Respect your coaches, they do it all for you! Peace, Love and Merry Christmas to all of you, and most of all, always show love and kindness to people that are less fortunate!

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night

Feliz Navidad y prospero ano nuevo.

Did any of you old timers go to the poly seed man on Lorena St off of Whittier Blvd.? My grandparents lived right off of Indiana by the mercado. I have been going to that poly seed guy for 40 years, they have the best pumpkin seeds in the world. I remember he used to stand outside with his cart and we would but our seeds fresh and hot! That old cart is still outside of his building. I have a lot of old memories shopping at the Zodys in Montebello by the 60 fwy. Does anyone remember the big slide that used to be on Via Campo? Anyone ever try a special quesadilla @ Marios in Pico? My family still goes there every time we visit my mom who still lives in Pico. I used to work at the gas station on Passons and Washington. Thanks Plaid Lad for bringing back so many good memories!

Merry Christmas to all the bloggers and to you too Fred.

PL,

I was with you every step of the way. I hope I didn't sound insincere. In print there's a fine line between sincerity and sarcasm.
I'm gonna retell your story plenty.

It really is a good one...and a great memory to have!

JA

I wasn't spinning-yarn on what I shared with everyone. That really happened exactly the way I described. To this day, one of the Lopez family members still lives at the two story Spanish stucco residence (S/E corner) near Alhambra Road and Garvey Ave in MP.

PLAID LAD

Joe Amat....

I did catch the note from you about me dropping in. Thanks, you know I'm a "closet Amat fan" I have to admit I miss the bantering you and I and some of the "oldtimers" had in the beginning. It's a lot different now, But I do still read the blog and still see a few of us "oldtimers" still here. It was good to see "randy" also the last couple of weeks.

Merry Christmas to all my buddies at Amat, Yourself, MAT,the Original Bleeds Blue & Gold and Blue Orca.

Talk Soon Guys!

Mike the Clone

Plaid Lad....it's a small world.

I happen to know Danny "Little Red" very well. A very good friend of mine was his neighbor in Alhambra and in the off season I would weight train at E.L.A.C. and there was Dan always poking me in the chest pushing me to work harder.

MTC

Plaiddy....GREAT story. Got goosebumps - and it reminds me of another oldie....

Mean Joe Green's commercial

Kid: (after offering Mean Joe his Coke)
"... really, you can have it..."
Mean Joe: (after guzzling the Coke) "...Hey, kid...catch!" (tossing him his Steeler Jersey)

Have a Coke and a smile!

gives me goosebumps too!

How about the song "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke..."

What about morning breakfast at El Tepeyac on Evergreen Avenue in Boyle Hts. The best Mexican food in the entire Heights. Manny (owner) still pours a heavy shot of Mexican-cough syrup (Brandy) before they serve you your food. Ay carumba.

Funny how the time of our youth is often remembered this time of year.

Christmas years ago....I was 13 or 14 and worked at a Rockview Dairy located in Monterey Park. My work hours varied, but I usually worked every weekend. There was this regular who came in every Sunday morning to purchase OJ, chocolate milk, and the Sunday newspaper. We use to talk sports non-stop while I serviced customers. I knew him only as, "Danny." This weekend ritual between he and I went on every Sunday as I kept that job while I attended school. I never asked what he did for a living and he never offered to tell me. One early morning he came into the dairy wearing sunglasses. It being early dawn I questioned why he was wearing the shades. He removed his shades and I quickly understood why he wore them. Unbeknownst to me, someone had dotted both of his eyes as they appeared purple/bloodshot and bloused over. Being curious I asked what had happened? Danny told me that he had a fight last night. Thinking who on God's good earth would want to harm Danny?....I asked if the police had capture the guys that had beat him up. He laughed at me and said he wasn't involved in a street fight, but rather a professional boxing match. He also added that he whipped his opponent and had won the match. He then pulled out the newspaper sports page and showed me the front cover page, which pictured Danny standing over his opponent in the ring. The caption read; "Danny Red Lopez, wins Championship bout with convincing style..." From day forward I never called him Danny again....he was always the "Champ" to me.

FYI: I still have that newspaper with the Champs signature.

Man you people are old!!

the good old days- somtimes ?
my dad owned the richfield gas statuon, corner of workman and citrus, i was about 10 years old or so,i guy came up to me with a small card , it said he couldnt talk or hear, so i asked my dad if i could give him some of my 1 buck an hour i was making, so i did, a little later walked next door to the hamburger stand, and guess what, he was there ordering his lunch talking with them, couldnt understand that and cried, well, thats the last time i did that !!

COOL STUFF I HAD TO JUMP IN, WHAT ABOUT THE GREEN CHILI BURRITO FROM (L&BS) ACROSS FROM THE OLD HOLLELBACK POLICE STATION, IF YOU NEVER BEEN THERE GO GET ONE ITS THE BEST THEY COOK THE BEANS WITH REAL MANTECA.........AND ANOTHER GOOD SPOT WAS THE TORTAS RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL..... I LOVE THIS BLOGG....

the 7ft. giant who sold hot dogs across from kmart.lol.how about the kung fu studio with the big kung fu guy drawing.perry boys buffet.

Plaid lad,

I worked at the corner of Passons and Telegraph, (Ranch territory), small world.

Twohey's onion rings, mmmmmmnnnh. Still there last time I looked. Back in the 70's you could get a pretty good deal at The Hat on Valley and Garfield if you showed up in a CSLA Football T shirt.

Marquez,

remember a gym in ELA on (or near) Whittier Blvd but it seems like it was further west, past Cantwell HS. We did CYA “manly” stuff in the 60's there. Also remember eating the the Sir George's in Whittier until the proprietor decided my brother and I were bad for the bottom line; told my parents four trips through the line was enough. :)

Don

My first job was at the ARCO Gas Station on the corner of Whittier Blvd and Atlantic Ave in ELA. I used to jokey gas, clean windshields, changed tires and oil after school.
________________________________

What about Twoey's the Lil'Stinko on the corner of Garfield/Atlantic and Huntington Drive. Haven't been in that neck of the woods in years, not sure if it is still there. Best milk shakes and onion rings in the world. And the car-hops were the best looking gal's in all SGV.

PLAID LAD

the smell of b.o.,donuts,and cigs from the helms truck, watching the t-birds practice in pico, the old boxing gym on the corner of montebello and whittier, eating at sir george and googies.ooh and running around naked at the beach(MARANO BEACH)my mojado days

Oh the memories; must be the season.

The Helm's Bakery Man:
I remember the guy who used to drive the Helms truck down E. 52nd Place, (my grandparents place), in So Central when I was a kid. The smell out of that long drawer full of yeasty donuts was about as close to nirvana a seven year old could get. (I suspect when my kids have their own children, they'll wax poetic over the fresh strawberry donuts from the Donut Man on Alosta.)

Zody's, White Front, FedCo etc:
The Circuit City, Federated, Sam's Club of the 60's-70's; will we have retail icons thirty years from now or will it all be on-line.

Bob's Big Boy:
Whittier Boulevard, Dave Hill's Ford Coupe, Big Boy Combo with Blue Cheese on the side for the fries.

Green Stamps/cheap gas:
My first job at a shell station in Pico Rivera. Full service and $1 got you nearly four gallons of regular, (ethyl was 2¢ more), check the tires, check the battery, wash the windows, and empty the ashtray kid.

Joe Amat

Quick Draw McGraw.....what about Felix the Cat (Righty-o ahahah!) and the Master Cylinder and Mad Professor?
________________________________________________

Dan

Yah, I agree the Helm's fat-pill tray was good but their candy drawer was the best.

i agree with this guy talking about other players, teams, or schools is just cowardly and nothing should be said unless you strap up that helmet work your behind off in the weight room spend your whole summer practicing to get better. i bet all these guys that talk crap are divorced and their new love is their computer losssssssssersssss! oh and by the way charter oak chargers are coming back to win the title next year period!

MTC - good to see you drop in

Nickel ice cream cones at Thrifty's?

Deputy Dog ? or how about this...

Yipee yi-o ki-a,
Galloping all the way
Here comes Quick Draw McGraw.

The cream puffs from the Helms Bakery were my favorite. Down in Whittier we also had the Lopez Bakery with the same kind of trucks as the Helms
bakery. They were the Mexican version with ponduce if I remember right. What I remember most from them were the hot polyseeds, another of my favorites.

¿Sportswriter?

Julio Cesar Chavez, now there is civil rights luminary. Who will ever forget the work he did for human rights when he whipped Greg Haugen?

oohh yeah almost forgot...... nothing like a fresh baked glazed doughnut from the Helm's man.

MTC

Ok Plaidy........

Sheriff John.

Had to throw that in.

Mike the Clone

Joe Amat

Hey, Joe do you remember the Helm's Bakery Man? And what about the sweet smells from the back of his panel van?.....that was priceless.

Or what about the Carnation Milk delivery person? Milk actually came in glass bottles with cardboard bottle caps.

Got dragged off to the Mall last night...looks like I missed the sparing-session.

Look, we all have opinions and objectives that we love to share on this website about HS football.

How the website operates is up to Fredj and the Tribune. If things were perfect and people were more responsible on this site, Fred wouldn't have had to invented it's new blogging criteria.

There's no need to chuck darts at each other over what we think the "Freedom of Speech" means to each of us.

The real issue here is the use of certain unacceptable language that has been deemed inappropriate, by others as well as the Tribune. As a check-point, Fred has the ability to erase those messages that over step that boundary. If you've been DASHED before by Fred, you know exactly what I'm referring too.

No one is trying to limit your time or response on this blog site....it's FREE to exist as long as we recognize there are other eyes that also read what is posted. So, like Fred said, "Think before you post and be responsible."

PLAID LAD

Bill, Bill, he's our man!! If he can't write it, no one can!!!!!

LMAO......sorry just can't help myself....wayyyyyyyy too much time on my hands....Hold please...."Would you like cheese on that?" "Please drive forward"

Bill, hold on one second…….Welcome to Mcdonalds, may I take your order…….

Hee Haw…Hee Haw……

ROFLMAO, Bill….stick and stones…..lol As usual talking to individuals like yourself is like talking to a box of rocks. If you would have come back with any other type of response I think HELL would have frozen over..lol….talk about being a burro, hang on I’m still getting off the floor from all that excellent counter punching that you just threw at me. I’m really sorry to have insulted you with the foul language but how else does one talk to a caveman? I think Dion Warwick could really use another psychic hotliner like yourself with your ability to call and lay out individuals so well. Grab a pen everyone here’s his number 1-8-E-L S-T-U-P-I-D-O……

I guess the crayons and color books really hit home huh? From the sound of it you must frequent the local Mickey D’s often, so tell you what take those 3 quarter pounders, (with cheese of course) large fries and your large diet coke, cop a squat in front of the tube, lay out the books and crayons and get busy……oh yea….don’t forget to stay in the lines…..

I’m dying to hear your come back, seeing how I have no life I will be glad to stay on here all night and shoot the s*** with ya…..Bring it on sister…..

hsfotblfn
Talk about a hot head! LOL Did you forget your Prozac today? You are exactly the type of donkey I am talking about. Someone who comes on here all ticked off because of something someone types. You must not have much of a life to get upset at what I or other says. You have the balls to call yourself a " mature adult" with the type of language you use? You are hilarious and a sad person that you take these comments so literally. By the way next time I stop at the mc donalds on foothill in Glendora I want you to make my fries for me ok?

hsfotblfn,

Sorry I probably should of read the top of the post before the kid's article. I mean no harm or foul so please don't assume I was going after FredJ for anything other than I am just concerned about the child's anonymity but obviously FredJ wouldn't post his article without first consulting with the school's administration and parents first and if not I may just be overreacting and am overprotective of the kid.

Someone from Glendora high school that is objective and rational please answer me one question. Some of my friends that have children that go to G.H.S. were telling me in their opinion just how obsessed the Glendora community is about this blog and I said that a majority of the families are not as involved as you think and the Glendora's parents/fans that post comments are really a small contingent of people. Do you agree or disagree with this statement because they then did say that administrators, teachers, and coaches have had lengthy discussions with various different walks of life including the kids. What's your opinion Glendora? I do think though this blog has become somewhat of a social phenomenon in our Valley. I don't know just interested in the well-being of people...

Baja, look at the top of this thread, it clearly states....The Glendora High School newspaper. No one is trying to hide anything, let alone Fred who was interviewed by the paper.

Someone please tell me where and when this newspaper circulates because I see the words "shield staff" printed at the top of the article and I do not want to believe that this is Glendora's school newspaper? I will wait on posting anymore comments until I hear exactly what newspaper this is but to think that this is Glendora’s paper well I stop until someone tells me more…

I actualy believe that this article was not as fair as you made it out to be Fred.
This is a great place to read good information about high school sports, and while there are a few bad apples in every tree, there is no need for that writer to to make this blog out to be what its not !!

So let me get this straight Bill, you are basically calling all those who get offended by statements made from some dumb a** illiterate a-hole, immature? But yet you have the stupidity to come on here and write that you and I quote: “However I admit I like pushing peoples button because of the lack of maturity and the reaction I am going to get.” I bet you that when you were a kid, you were the type that got his rocks off running up to the house of an 80 yr old senior citizen, ringing the door bell and then running off to hide in the near by bush to watch their reaction when they opened the door to find no one there.

Some class act you must be, I’m sure you will come back with some kind of snappy response suggesting like the rest of clan “If you don’t like what you read, don’t come on here” How about this, “Have something of substance to write when you are staring down at your keyboard or better yet why don’t you pick your crayons and coloring books, plop yourself in front of the TV and leave the discussion of HS football to the mature adults….

Ah my kind of topic. This gets back to my point on earlier posts that people need to stop taking everything said here to literally. Believe it or not sportswriter actually makes a good point. People in the past endured negative comments and have gone on to accomplish great things. Does it mean they should happen here? Of course not however I admit I like pushing peoples button because of the lack of maturity and the reaction I am going to get. The more mature people ignore these comments and don't give them the publicity that writer at Glendora did. Take this blog for what its worth. Our 1st amendment rights give us the freedom to comment on this blog. Don't take things so seriously.

Its a dam blog if you don't want to here it than get off ,quit your f...ing crying don't come on here and talk about some kid or team like there the greatest thing that walk the planet and exspect no one to say anything.

What i am just saying is who cares what people say on here its a blog. If you dont like it don'r read. People who take offense to some written words and complain about it just need to relax and remember these people enjoy seeing you respond and cry about it. By not ignoring it fuels that person to write more.

AT-sportswriter-bill-Blue-dajuice, or whoever you claim to be today, you must be a teenager yourself to recognize one. Who is fouling who foo?

Most of the comments on this blog are from emotionally charged immature teenagers. They are playing Fred by writing about it their school newspaper and then Fred posts it here? What's up with that dudue? Gim'me a break and leave it up to good ol'Glendora to keep whining and now create news out of their own participation in Freds blog. Fred, you've been had my friend.

Why am I not surprised that as soon as Fred posts something new and something that he actually took a part in, all the knuckleheads come out and honor us with their sick twisted so called logic.

To top it off we have one genius even throwing out civil right individuals as if that is suppose to impress us….News flash partner……Look around, how much different is society today from all those eras you so brilliantly enlightened us with……NOT MUCH!!!!!

I guess in “sportswriter’s” world it’s ok to walk around and call out anybody you feel like and throw any type of insult at them because after all according to him, they should all have thicker skin, Ganhdi, Parks, King and Chavez have all paid the price for them to do that…..I surely hope that whoever you are, you in no way have the ability to stand before a classroom of youths and pollute them with your sick and pathetic logic.

I applaud you Fred for posting this article as it has obviously hit home with some individuals on here who feel the need to come out and try to validate their irresponsible so-called points of view or wanna be journalism.

sportswriter

You couldn't wring the sweat from the collar of any of the Civil Right legends that you mentioned in your post.

PLAID LAD

Reiterating what the blog has on it and spelling out words like "WETBACKS" etc. in a newspaper article is the same as posting it for the first time. It spreads...what is the differance? that it is second hand news, only to spell out the same shi-.

sportwriter--thank God you don't actually write for a living. With those clouded thoughts of yours you set racial and social progress back about 100 years.

First and foremost a blog is a place where people can go and say what they want. The one thing I disagree with is how the article states that how this blog hurts the players. It shouldn't because first of all a athelete who wants to make it to the next level will have to learn to how to ignore what others say. Examples of this is a smart athelete will not go and clip somebody and get a 15-yard penalty because the play before a opposing player called his mom a name. Also wouldn't stuff on here be defined as the good old term "bulletin board material". A athlete that excells to the professionals levels have been called names worse than things in this blog by players, coaches and fans. A example of this is the real homerun king Hank Aaron. The man recieved death threats and called every racial name in the book but stilled excelled and achieved. People have forgotten the best way to take something negative in sports is to show it on the field. Sports today sometimes can be just ourtright sad. Especially when a girlfriend can be blammed for a quarterbacks performance.
It all comes down to maturity on all levels. The people who posts these comments lack maturity and players who look at these and say they affect them lack maturity. People today are more worried about what is said but what is done. If everyone took this attitude there would of never been a Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and Julio Cesar Chavez. I give the student credit and the teacher in charge for allowing this article to be published. The only shot I can take is for some reason Glendora has a fascination with Charter Oak. I dont know what it is but they seem to think their better socially but want to have the accomplishments that the Charter Oak Atheletic program has.

Blue-dajuice

Thanks for both of your stupid and unnecessary comments.

Respectfully,

Editor and Chief Publisher of the "Thicker Skin Newspaper."

Fredj

Way to go Fred!...Nothing like listening to what our kids think and have to say....about certain misguided adult behavior.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

PLAID LAD

Just like Glendora to start crying. The people in Glendora need to grow some thicker skin and stop whining about a Blog. Fred nice work this blog is a great feeback station for mature individuals, I know some have gone off the deep end and the new log in e-mail have chased some of them off, but this column that Alex Moskowitz has written about your blog Fred, is just plain out of jealousy and he is trying to get readers by bashing the Tribunes Blog. What a loser. Alex go report on some fires or the Juice on the Glendora campus.

in their paper do the have the Mitchell Report of all their players juicing?
