Is Roche really done? It sure sounds like it

By Pete Marshall, Bulletin Staff Writer
CHINO HILLS - This time, Terry Roche said, he's really done.
Roche announced his resignation as Chino Hills High School football coach and apparently ended one of the most successful head coaching careers in the area.
Roche, 56, will remain at the school as a work experience teacher, although he plans to retire from teaching in the next few years.
"I'm just getting a little bit older," Roche said. "And I'm not as passionate as I'd like to be. I figured it's time. It's been a great seven years."
Roche is the only head football coach the school has known since it opened with freshmen only in 2001.
In five varsity seasons at Chino Hills, Roche compiled a 39-15-1 record and took the Huskies to the playoffs four out of five years. The best season at Chino Hills was 2005, when the Huskies went 11-1. Chino Hills failed to make the playoffs in 2007.
Roche's career record was 223-82-7, including stints at Chino Hills, Diamond Bar, Bellflower St. John Bosco, Ontario and Chowchilla high schools.
At Diamond Bar, Roche won four CIF-Southern Section titles, in 1984, '95, '98 and '99, three of which were perfect 14-0 seasons. His Diamond Bar teams had a 27-game win streak in 1984-85 and a 26-game win streak in 1999-2000.
He stepped down after Diamond Bar lost in the 2000 CIF-SS semifinals to eventual champion Upland.
"That time, I left the door open (for a return)," Roche said. "It's not open any more."
Roche initially was only helping Chino Hills with the search for a new coach, but then became a candidate.
The only door Roche said will remain open is that of an assistant coach, if the new coach wants Roche to help.
"Coach Roche has built a solid program and never had a losing season here at Chino Hills High School," Chino Hills principal Carl Hampton said in a statement. "We are grateful to him for all that he has brought to the program and our students. We look forward to having him continue to serve on our staff."
Roche would like to have input on the hiring of a new coach and said he expected one or more of his assistants to apply.
"I'd hope I'd have a little bit of input," he said. "You never know. I just want to spend more time with my grandchildren."
He said there are no serious health issues, but Roche did admit the heat during August and September practices got to him.
"I had to get out of the heat a couple of times and I had a hard time breathing," Roche said.
He said he initially told Chino Hills he would give the school five years. The thought of stepping down entered his mind early this season.
Roche also sees the sport changing, with teams opting for a spread offense.
"If I was 10 or 15 years younger, I'd be more willing to (change offenses)," Roche said. "I think four or five years down the road, that's what people are going to."
But Roche said he knows it would be hard to quit cold turkey.
"I wouldn't want to do it full-time, but I'd like to help out at game time or part-time," Roche said. "These are wonderful kids."

AHSFBFAN, if Roche walked off without shaking hands with the p.o.s. Inglima, I'm sure it was warranted. If you TRULY know Inglima then you know what a low life, back stabber, piss poor example of "class guy" he is. Ayala never had an answer for Roche when he was at DB or CH. Show some class yourself if you have any left, and stop trying to smear some meaningless BS on this blog.
Lost alot of respect for Roche after Ayala beat Chino Hills this year. He walked to a corner of the endzone and did not shake hands with our coaches. No excuses, just poor sportsmanship. Maybe it is best that he's movin on. Bye Bye Roche
Jcaz that's why high school athletes and parents are kind of out of touch with reality. That's why when these lucky few get to college the wheels come off and no one is there to pick up the pieces. The only real damage is to the poor student who happens to come across one of these idiots. USC has had their share, with one LB breaking a students jaw for not letting him into a party, and so do many universities. My question is what about the student who is an innocent victim? Does he cheer in the stands? Does he not learn a lesson as well. How bout Lawrence Phillips dragging a student, and former girl friend, down 3 flights of stairs, and then playing in the National Championship game. Tom Osborne, leader of men, yeah right? Maybe those players that were asked to leave Amat learned a bigger lesson. Pay for your mistakes, start over and don't do it again. They were lucky. Amat could have said it was okay and told them they couldn't just play football. That's when it all would have come out. And they wouldn't have play football anywhere. Yes they all got a break. Football (insert any sport) is king? Then what does that make academics? Wonder how many bloggers' kids fit into which arena. Some, very few, make it in both. But the majority come on here and add to the problem.
Joe have you ever met MTC
Notes in general
Again, here we are speaking in abstract terms again, and the reason for that is of course, because no one can really say, what the issues were surrounding the mass exodous of such a large talent pool of gifted athletes.
However, my point was simply, why ? That is to say, why wasn't an effort made to remedy certain issues ? And why did not Verti make an attempt to help keep these people. Why did they all leave ?
Tell me the truth here, does anyone really believe that what ever happened to all these kids, not just to one or two, but to all of them, that what occurred here, hasn't happened at other schools and to other kids before ?
Be it money issues or financial, there was a way to help them out. In my opinion, a church is suppose to be there to help the people who are their parishioners, both spiritually and in other ways, so what happened here ? Who failed them ?
Perhaps we can look at Alemany as an example here. They have a good running back that just transferred there from Canyon this past year. He had a number of issues including personal and academic that would not have allowed him to attend Amat biased on these "High moral concepts" that are being touted around here. Yet there they were, in the playoffs, and if memory serves me correctly, they pounded Amat this year.
Look, all that I am saying is that, not everything is black and white. There can always be second chances given, not exceptions made !
Perhaps what I am advocating in some folks' mind may seem suspiciously like a big time college football program that looks the other way when the star football player is accused of some evil or misguided deed. But that is not the case at all. It is simply that many people were greatly disapointed with what happened out on the field this year and look at the ramifications of it all ! Folks are calling for the removal of not only the football coach, but of the administrative staff as well. What does that tell you here ?
Football is king people, and believe it or not, it is the success of a football program that drives everything from turbine newspaper sales, to the jock straps little johnny's wrestling team.
Joe Amat
I would have to agree with some of your thoughts.
I truly beleive you need the right leadership at the top in order to set the examples for the kids.
A STRONG AD is a must in any school today. One that will hold coaches accountable for the standards of the school and will make sure the coaches follow the same protocol.
I know programs that are going down hill, because the coach(S) can't even manage their own lives! Unfortunately the union and ten year system truly is a joke in the education field. Not sure if that is the case at Amat, but the public sector codes need revamping!
Plaiddy,
Nicely done! Agree completely. Oh, and I'll take consistent and persistent anyday :-)
Judge JB,
Good to see you back. If intelligent posts like yours and Plaid Lads were to outnumber the unwanted posts - they would be less noticeable, garner less attention , and begin to cease. Then we can get back the number of bloggers that no longer frequent the site and make it a place where some intelligent discussion, debate, and even arguments can take place in the spirit of sharing opposing views and hopes that others can understand the different persepectives on sports (or as Aram used to say "...and life!")
To answer your questions... Yes I am happy for Wells and his success. I am afraid, however, that when things work out so well for those that "stumble" they have a tendency to not retain the lesson that could or should be learned from their misstep. Some may get the feeling that athletics is the cure to all evils when, as we see all too often in pro sports, it may be the cause of many. It does concern me a bit that the past 3 seasons the SGV POY has had some very publicized indiscretions and I'm afraid that younger players coming up are getting that very same message. we all know that they all watch and read, so maybe, a news publication has a higher calling than to honor players for only on field accomplishments. Or maybe that is another outlets responsibility.
To jcaz' point and johns assertion, I am fine with the administration's decision to suggest that Wells find another school to take his talents to. It was something that probably had to be done, if not for the boys and girls involved, but for others who follow. Standards must be high, and accountability is necessary to preserve that. However, IMO, the daily leadership by coaches of character that are *respected, and even a little feared*, by the players develops a sense of responsibility to their teammates on and off the field, building young men that can be role models to younger players - thus building a consistency of quality in the program. That daily leadership and command of respect has not been the lancers strong point of late. They have lost many coaches that fit that description, for a number of reasons and it has hurt. Maybe a strong AD that actually wants that responsibility might help.
Would we have won more games without the mass exodus of players... a couple... or a few. More to your Q of asking if the current staff can "... bring back to prominence and the standard of excellence our Valley has come to expect from our parochial school and consistently compete in the Pac-5 every year?..." Not in the near future, for many of the reasons above. Might we be better next year... you'd have to hope so. Is that something that can be sustained and built upon with the current leadership. Not so sure.
Best wishes to Coach Roche on his retirement.
He has served the communities, schools, and boys he has coached for years and deserves nothing less.
Just an opinion
Several weeks ago, I exchanged words on this site regarding the lack of experienced coaches at the "lower levels" of competition related to some SGV programs.
Some regulars expressed their opinions with words (that I won't repeat) that displayed their concerns of coaching inadequacies that stand to harm programs as they attempt to compete yearly within the CIF playoffs.
The margin of proof was best illustrated with evidence of current history, which depicts SGV teams as long shots to actually win CIF titles.
The comparisons were many, as some on this site continued to match our progressive report card with the likes of the IE and OC. Their successes are evident with yearly honors of earned dominance locally and throughout the nation.
If we are to believe that SGV is now drained of talent, few would agree with that statement. Annually SGV produces a solid crop of athletes that could and should compete at the next level of competition. Is it as abundant as the IE or OC?...Probably not...in comparison to their base of population, but if compared to other areas with a similar demographics I still believe that SGV would shine.
With regards to examining why SGV possibly flounders in comparison to other areas, the focus of discussion was directed toward coaching (or the lack of coaching) at the "lower levels" of competition.
First and foremost, each assistant coach is hired by each respected head coach. I would imagine that experience and knowledge of the game takes precedence as a prerequisite toward any candidate's scroll of credentials.
Secondly, that newly hired assistant coach must 'buy-into-the-program' as created and lessoned by the varsity head coach. Often times this is where some candidates are eliminated from contention. If the newly hired assistant coach is NOT compatible with the orchestrated plan of the varsity coach, separatism develops which often derails the progress of any programs success. Therefore, it is important for the freshman and JV football coach(s) to remain on the same page as the varsity head coach. Unfortunately as simple as this sounds....it is NOT always the case and this is where the "inconsistencies in coaching" remains.
Thirdly, for good measure throw in budgetary and financial responsibilities, which every head coach is aware of and sometimes the best candidate never gets the chance to show his stuff.
So, here is my solution (which is NOT the only solution)....If the problem lies somewhere between the head coach and the freshman coach, it is imperative that all experience and knowledge from that head coach should be passed to the lower levels of coaching for any program to be a success.
Recently, we were all made party to the retirement announcement of Head Coach Terry Roche. I'm sure that he will have a hand in hiring his replacement. Knowing just how important it is to develop and cultivate 'one of your own,' I'll bet that he has plenty of assistants waiting in the balance for that opportunity. If not, where do you think Coach Roche would better find the next Vince Lombardi to establish decades of promise?
Lastly, I think that every program hits peaks and vallys, more often then others. What makes a successful program successful, is "consistency at all levels." That is why we see annually some teams reload while others reinvent the wheel.

My apologies to judge joe and mike the clone you both now know why the blog has gone down hill. Sorry to say it but this is what the blog has become, nothing more than crude name calling and stupid little comments. Sorry you guys but the often time contoversial topics that were brought up and debated in a civil matter are long gone.
You guy's and a few others are missed.
My apologies to coach Roche for misspelling his name on my previous blog.
I also think Verti would be a good fit at Chino Hills.........
Congrats to Wells and his Player of the year. What happened with him and being asked to leave was his fault and I agree with it but Verti has let him down. A Head Coaches responsibility does not stop on the field. His players are his all year long and it is his example that they should follow. Not happening at Amat.
Please, someone tell me that Msgr. Carroll has come up with some common sense and is listening to his boosters.
Someone tell me that coach Verti will be announcing that he wants to spend more time with his family soon.
Congrats to coach Roach on his retirement...
I was on the coaching staff at Chino Hills in 2004, and let me tell you something about your precious coach Roche. He is as big an ass as you will find in this world, on and off the field. Having said that, let me also tell you what a wonderful spirit he has and affection for his players and coaching staff. The man looks like jello but has the skin of raw hide. Truly going to be missed, but if I know Roche (and I do) he will be back in the game in less than 2 years. Think Diamond Bar return...trust me.
Coach Roche will always be Diamond Bar football. I think due to health reasons he will not be a head varsity coach anymore. He would be great as the freshmen coach at Chino Hills. When he retired at D-Bar I thought he would become the brahmas frosh coach. He was at one time the freshman coach for DB baseball. I used to see hime at the baseball games watching some of the players he coached as freshman. High school football is losing a great coach. He was very loyal to the players that started in the program as frosh and could have accepted dozens of quality transfers.

Even though your comments were directed towards JA and MTC, I still, never the less have to chime in on one small issue, and that is that while "focusing on the solution" is of course the right thing to do, it still goes without saying that there are serious problems with the football program at Amat.
I have to say that I am not an insider, and I do not know what the issues were surrounding the program this year or why these kids left, but it seems to me that a "good" coach, would not only strive for success on the field, but also be there for his players. It seems to me that Verti did neither.
Why did'nt verti stick up for these guys ? Why was'nt he there to mediate ? Why, if there were issues of charicature, did not the Monsenior give these players another chance ?
A good coach would do what ever he could to help the young men that play for him, but it seems to me that there were a lot of unanswered questions as to why they all left and what roll Verti played in thier departure.
Again, I don't know all the details of why they left, but just by reading some of the post's on this blogg, it seems to me that there could have been much more effort given to retaining these young men.
Don't other private Catholic schools assist in tuition of thier athletes ? If it were simply a matter of money for some, then I must be missing something here, because in most schools, football draws the greatest chunck of revenue, and pays for almost eveything else.
Keep in mind that it is this sport that makes a school prominent and attractive to the academic community. After all, would schools such as Notre Dame be so highly respected if it were not for thier athletics ?
I certianly hope that we dont have a repeat of last year on the horizon here.
Read Closely. Judge JOE Brown IS Mike The Clone.

What an ego!
getover it is part of this blogs problem
Judge Joe Brown, who else do you have a man crush on? What a long winded MAROON you are! JA must be obviously sickened that Wells is POY, but they booted him out of Amat, he apparently didn't fit the mold. And we know MTC has it in for Pasqy, for whatever diabolical reasons he alone harbors! Why don't the three of you just email each other and cry your rivers elsewhere? You snivelers, whiners and malcontents deserve each other.
Joe Amat and Mike the Clone,
Season greetings my brothers! Long time since we last dialogued but I had a few days of vacation reserved for the holiday break and I promised myself I would never blog again after last debacle by the “button wearers” but I miss the good old days so I will do my best to ignore everyone else on the blog and just focus on you two and anyone else is welcomed as long as you’re civilized and humane. Pay attention fellow “bloggers” to my opening statements because this is an education meant for those of you who have no history of the past and some of the finest men that walk the face of the earth in my world.
I have the utmost respect for your wisdom of the game and likewise your intellect of life. I also realize each of you have resumes that qualify you to post comments that on occasion have and will upset others that I too may even disagree with from time to time but no one can debate your two’s life experiences. Frankly, very few people have the perception of the game and life like you two do but in reality not many people have been as successful as you two have in your lives. I preface my post with these comments because for a long time now this blog has failed miserably at what the intent and purpose was from the beginning. This was suppose to be a place on the internet where we would go and could articulate our thoughts and express our feelings freely and never was anything personal and everything was always professional. Today there is nothing on this blog that resembles and reflects “it!” Anyways, I will stop with my fine line between passion and rage. I just felt very compelled to discuss with you a few questions.
Joe Amat,
How do you personally feel when you open the paper on Christmas morning and a former Bishop Amat star athlete is named our Valley's football player of the year? Without going into specifics, I realize his situation and his expulsion from school but do you truly believe with the current staff at Bishop Amat that they would have been any more successful if there wasn’t the mass exodus this year? I do not want to seem negative and always prefer to be positive but seriously in your opinion can this current staff lead the Lancers back to prominence and the standard of excellence our Valley has come to expect from our parochial school and consistently compete in the Pac-5 every year? And if not, let’s then focus on what the solution is rather than the problem?
Mike the Clone,
You have always been a critic of Glendora’s coaching staff and in particular the head coach. In your opinion, do you feel he was worthy of receiving the coach of the year award? Is he a mediocre coach with an overachieving team or is he an exceptional coach that unfortunately is in a division that he will never be able to compete in with the likes of Corona Centennial, and years prior like Hart, etc.? I just have observed what he has always done in the “big games” and you used to refer to him affectionately as coach Marty Shotenheimer and I am beginning to wonder if we should really be mentioning him in the same sentence as Bogan, Farrar, and Gano? Is he one of the best coaches in the Southern Section like the other three names mentioned why or why not in your opinion?
Peace…
Aram,
I can't imagine you don't read the blog still from time to time so if you're there brother man go ahead we would thoroughly enjoy your participation like we did in the past before this blog was taken over by Communists!
Joe Amat
I hurt my side laughing on you're last post. JA no one can ever say you were not persistent, as well as consistent. LMAO

Hmm that makes light of my recent post talking about Pasqy being the Larry Brown of HS football and moving on. Interesting possibility of him at Chino Hills after all he did coach at Ayala. The talent pool is much better at Chino Hills than at Glendora. I could see him making the move!
Chino Hills first basketball coach was the former amat coach, so they have a history of hiring amat coaches, therefore....
Verti to Chiino Hills!
ah, we can only hope,
What about Ted Clarke, the former San Dimas coach. He's been successful coaching at Mt. Sac and lately at Fullerton College. Chino Hills would be a great fit!
When you think of Succesful HS Football Coaches , You Think Coach Terry Roche .Definitely a Class Act !
Now relax & enjoy your family .
Fight On
TM
Coach Roche....you are the man! And you always will be.............thx for leading our boys over quite a few mountain tops....4 of 'em to be exact.....your the Head Brahma!
Does this mean Pasquarella is on his way to Chino Hills? Sure would make sense.
Coach Terry Roche thanks for the opportunity for allowing all of us to walk in your shadow. You'll always be one of SGV's best and you'll be missed by the entire Sierra League community.
